Book Description
Landscaping is Nina Quinn's business, but trouble seems to be her middle name. Saddled with a recently expelled, faithless local–cop husband, a teenaged terror of a stepson, and the yappiest, most unhousebreakable Chihuahua in captivity, Nina needs a respite –– and the backyard makeover she's undertaking for her sister Maria and Nate, Maria's fiance, may do the trick.
But, of course, Nate vanishes mysteriously, and Nina's gardening magic inadvertently turns up a corpse. And with a thief on the prowl who's preying on the neighborhood elderly, a suspicious Pandora's Box of a package arriving on her doorstep, and yet another body inconveniently turning up, Nina's going to have to dig into her community's dirtiest little secrets to regain her peace and sanity –– if she can manage to stay alive long enough to enjoy it.

Trouble in Spades.......2007-08-11
I have just discovered Heather Webber and she is a good writer. I will keep her on my favorit Author list. This book is funny, the charaters are 3 deminsional and the plot was good.
Digging for Clues.......2006-06-27
The 2nd installment in the Nina Quinn Mystery series continues shortly after the first book ends. Nina Quinn is the owner of Taken by Surprise, a horticulture business that does surprise makeovers to landscapes. In the previous book, Nina had just discovered that her detective husband had been cheating with his female partner, and she struggles to keep a brave front and to be a parent to her stepson, Riley. Leaving Riley in her care on what looks like a permanent basis, her soon-to-be ex, Kevin, leaves most of the parenting to her. Riley has started a new job bagging groceries at Kroger, and it would seem that he is coming out of some of his teenage rebellion. But when a series of burglaries in her neighborhood have the neighbors complaining about a panty thief, Nina starts to notice that Riley has been sneaking out of the house. Could he the prowler? Along with this disturbing discovery, Nina's future brother-in-law, Nate, disappears less than 2 weeks before he is to marry her sister, Maria, and they both suspect foul play rather than cold feet. When a body is discovered, and has a strong connection to Nate, Nina becomes very worried and starts her own investigation. Trying to uncover the panty thief, keeping Riley at home, working countless hours, and cleaning up after a Chihuahua with a bladder problem has Nina jumping from morning until late at night. And trying to find a murderer and Nate will really have her burning the candle at both ends.
I love this series! This book was laugh out loud funny at times. I loved the quirky character of Nina, her assistant Tam, and neighbor, Mr. Cabrera. The scenes with Gracie (the dog) were hilarious, and I also enjoyed the family feud between Nina's mother and her aunt. The mystery was good, and I was glad to see that Nina did not rely on her ex for "inside" information from the police like happens in many cozies. This is a refreshing, fun series!
The first book in the series was called "A Hoe Lot of Trouble". Enjoy!
This Mystery Series Keeps Getting Better.......2006-06-09
"Trouble in Spades" picks up right where "Hoe Lot of Trouble", the debut of the Nina Quinn landscaping series, leaves off. In fact, the second book is set only two weeks after the first one. Ohio landscaper Nina Quinn, owner of a landscaping make-over company, is still in the midst of divorcing her police detective husband Kevin. "Trouble in Spades" revolves around another crisis which looms large for Nina's family--the rapidly approaching wedding of Nina's younger sister Maria. The wedding is only two weeks away, and Nina still hasn't been fitted for her matron of honor dress. But a bigger problem arises when Maria's fiance Nate suddenly disappears. Maria's not sure of Nate has gotten cold feet about the wedding or if his disappearance is connected to something more sinister. In the midst of doing a huge landscaping makeover for Maria for a wedding present, Nina finds herself getting involved in the search for the missing fiance. And as several corpses turn up (one is found right in the midst of the makeover site), Nina realizes that she may have turned up more trouble than she can handle.
This second mystery definitely stands well on its own, as author Webber does a fine job of incorporating background information on all the important characters. Readers of the first book will enjoy getting to know Nina's family better. "Trouble in Spades" focuses a lot more on developing the character of Nina's sister Maria, who is a neurotic but lovable bride-to-be.
This well-plotted mystery with a gardening twist was a quick and very entertaining read.
Great gardening mystery.......2006-05-30
Nina Quinn is doing a backyard makeover for her sister Maria as a wedding gift. But when the groom, Nate, goes missing, Nina isn't sure what to think. Should she continue doing the makeover? Will the groom's father still pay? Where is Nate and why can't Maria contact him?
When a corpse is discovered, things go from bad to worse. Is Nate in trouble? Is Maria in trouble? Can Nina help her sister find Nate and discover what is going on?
Plus, there's a thief on the prowl in Nina's neighborhood preying on the elderly. And her stepson is not coming home until very late at night.
Can Nina unravel all these mysteries without putting herself in danger?
I really like this series. Nina is such a fun character. She's very down to earth and believable. The people she employs are fun, and her family really adds to the story. Then there are her neighbors. What a hoot!
I can't wait to read the next one! I highly recommend this book!

Another great read.......2006-03-29
If you haven't read Heather Webber's great Nina Quinn mysteries, you have a treat waiting for you. The characters are wonderful; the humor, marvelous; and Ms. Webber's ability, spectacular.
Customer Reviews:
disappointed.......2001-01-28
I read several of John Lee's Unicorn books before finally giving up on the series. The concept of these novels was very interesting - a mideval type society with magicians and all the like, battling a non-human species that inhabits their own planet. The humans and other sedinent creatures are having trouble co-existing, and enter a war to eliminate each other.
Meanwhile, a trio of Unicorns with some telepathic type abilities hook up with one of the mages, and the humans view these unicorns as the key to their success. The Unicorns can also travel through space, and bring their human friend to another planet, perhaps in hopes of helping win the war?
Overall, the series had some interesting concepts and the battle scenes were graphic (for those who like war stories). However, the characters were VERY VERY dry (even depressing), and I found myself barely able to concentrate on the books, and finally gave up. These books desperately needed a little more humor or at least humanity to its dour characters.

Here Come the Romulans!.......2000-07-03
Romulans are my favorite villians, I'm still waiting for a movie that places them center stage. Naturally, when I decided to run an ST game, I wanted to have lots of Romulans. This book includes information about the Romulan Neutral Zone (some of which has all ready appeared in the Next Generation core rule book); however, if you are looking for new information on Romulans, you will not find it here. That is not the intention of the book.
The intention of the book is to offer four adventures featuring Romulans which can be played individually or as a series. I don't want to give away any details of the episodes themselves, but I will say that they involve traditional romulan sneakiness. Each adventure is well written and includes troubleshooting sections that give narrator's "what-if" solutions. A Narrator will also find stats and descriptions of NPC's througout the Neutral Zone.
The only thing which keeps me from giving this book five stars is the cheaply done artwork. It really does the rest of the book a disservice.
Great RPG Tool.......1999-06-22
I thought this book was great. It gives great detail on how to start and run a Nuetral Zone campaign. Also keep in mind that his is only book one in an ongoing series. For those of you who are looking to place the Romulans at the forefront of villainy, this is the book for you!
Short on Information, but tells a good story.......1999-04-17
If you are looking for new information on the "Star Trek: Universe" this is not the book to look to, but if you are looking for ideas for your Role Playing Campaigns then this might be of some help. It was a little disappointing to open up "A Fragile Peace : The Neutral Zone Campaign" and not see the vibrant colors that make the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Role Playing Game Core Rule Book" really stand out.

Product Description
The 12th Article encapsulates the best and worst of the human experience. After a warring nation is challenged by their suffering children to be more understanding, the entire country goes through a dramatic shift in consciousness that gives birth to an army of peacekeepers, the greatest the world has ever known. With them they bring a revolutionary education system that propels one teacher into the ranks of Buddha or Jesus. When Professor Jewels becomes King of Gopal, he must draw on all his life experiences when he finds himself having to reveal to his youngest son, Pachem, a prophecy from Gopal's past that will pit one brother against another while testing the faith of every Gopalian and the very essence of their extraordinary way of life. In this dramatic and inspiring adventure, the integration of the spiritual and the physical is woven into the spoils of war, which will either leave one brother with the greatest of all powers, or another with the greatest of all gifts. This mystical story illuminates the power of love and the profound relationship between choice and destiny.

If you really want to analyze and/or change your diet, you need to know more than a count of the calories you're taking in; you also need to know the fat, cholesterol, fiber, and sodium. You get all this and more from The Complete Book of Food Counts, a 770-page paperback that lists every food you can think of, including brand-name items. Each food is analyzed by calories; grams of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber; and milligrams of cholesterol and sodium. Let's say you're trying to stick to a healthy diet that is high in fiber and low in fat and sodium. Look up a food item and you'll see an array of brands compared, making it easy to find the healthiest choices. All major brands of packaged, canned, and frozen food items are listed. You can even look up a chain restaurant and check out menu options before you order; for example, a Carl's Jr. Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich feeds you 530 calories and a whopping 30 grams of fat (the same as a McDonald's Quarter Pounder with cheese!) and 1,230 milligrams of sodium. Customer Reviews:
waste of money.......2007-08-24
This book is basically a list of Nutrition Facts that you find on the back of food packages and THAT's IT!
A great tooll for healthy eating.......2007-01-14
An exhaustive resource for food nutrional info. Sometimes too much informatiom makes it hard to find exactly what you're looking for. Some brand names on the list seem to be outdated. Nevertheless, its available at bargain prices.
It's hard to read.......2006-06-10
It has tons of information; both fresh and processed foods, but I found it difficult to look at the pages. The cheap, greyish, mass market paperback pages are fine for a novel and straight through reading, but when you're trying to follow a tiny chart it makes it hard to do. After looking at all the food counting books in the bookstore, I finally found one compact book with medium stock, bright paper and great info that was easy on the eyes for just $2 more. The Ultimate Calorie, Carb, & Fat Gram Counter by Lea Ann Holzmeister. I recommend that one over the Netzer book.
Good But Wished It Had a Bit More.......2006-05-12
I am on a strict high protein diet so this was a very good book as it lists protein amts. for tons of foods.
My one complaint is it seems to list almost all pre-packaged or restaurant foods. How 'bout a chicken leg you make or a hamburger not from Burger King? I'd find it helpful if that type of info. were included as well.
Don't waste your money.......2006-03-09
This book is not very helpful and confusing to use. A lot of the information it provides is information you can read on the food labels IF you buy those brands.
Book Description
Nowadays, everyone who entertains is looking for outstanding casual fare that will allow them to spend more time with their guests. Dishes must be quick and easy to prepare (or able to be made ahead) and filled with the purest ingredients for optimum flavor.
The Best of Gourmet, Featuring the Flavors of Thailand is filled with twenty-eight such menus-most are very relaxed, all are absolutely delicious.
For example, after a chilly day on the slopes, you may want to treat your houseguests to A Ski House Dinner. Begin the evening around the fire with champagne and a large platter of ever-so-tender smoked salmon with cilantro cream. Later, roasted veal chops with shallots, tomatoes, and olive jus nestled on pillows of soft polenta make a rich, indulgent entrée. And before everyone retires, a heavenly warm chocolate raspberry pudding cake, made the day before and reheated, is served with a glass of cognac.
When the summer heats up, why not spend A Weekend at the Shore with friends? You'll have three clever menus in hand that take advantage of the season's abundant fresh produce, include plenty of make-ahead dishes, and satisfy hearty seaside appetites. On Saturday morning you can serve Breakfast on the Beach with buttery-rich baked blueberry-pecan French toast. Lunch Indoors includes a serve-yourself composed salad of classic favorites and a lovely rhubarb rice pudding. Then, after a long day in the sun, Dinner on the Deck promises a seafood meal to remember with curry-marinated mussels, followed by grilled lobster with Southeast Asian dipping sauce.
Or perhaps a last-minute Beyond Backyard Basics dinner is closer to what you had in mind? This little gem of a menu features ratatouille with penne-a heavenly jumble of roasted eggplants, onions, yellow squash, and red bell peppers, with plum tomatoes, garlic, thyme, parsley, and basil. For dessert, multicolored grapes perched atop pastry cream in puff pastry shells make a scrumptious and ever-so-pretty choice.
So which menu will you try first? You'll find more than eighty pages of exquisite full-color photographs to help you decide. Altogether, this volume holds more than 350 recipes-including the very best recipes that appeared in Gourmet's food columns during 1999. There are hundreds of dishes that can be made in forty-five minutes or less (look for the clock symbol ð); plenty of leaner and lighter selections (look for the feather symbol F); seasonal ideas for everything from apples to zucchini; and an impressive array of tempting sweets and snacks.
This year's Cuisines of the World section turns to the intriguing flavors of Thailand with a traditional dinner for eight and a collection of Thai snacks. Dishes such as steamed red snapper with ginger, grilled beef salad, fish cakes, and coconut ice cream demonstrate the sweet, sour, hot, and salty tastes of this fascinating country. Informative primers and exquisite full-color photos add further insight.
Twenty-four more brand-new recipes appear in a special section featuring Unusual Pastas and Grains. From fresh rice noodles to Israeli couscous to wheat berries, and much more, these unique pantry items will undoubtedly expand your palette of flavors.
Just when you thought you had tasted it all, along comes a cookbook that opens up a world of new possibilities-

We use the 10th Anniv Ed so much..........2006-12-03
...that we had to own the 20th Anniversary Edition. Our 10th Anniv copy is well-worn. We love that book for its Four-Cheese Baked Bow Ties recipe alone. Gourmet offers remarkably clear, detailed instructions. We also enjoy the organization of the books.
Excellent Series for Entertaining. Better than Keeping issues........2006-06-23
`The Best of Gourmet 20th Anniversary Edition' by the editors and writing staff of `Gourmet' Magazine appears better to me than I was expecting, especially if you are fond of entertaining between 8 and 12 people at a clip. If you are a regular subscriber to `Gourmet', I guess this book can be something of a tough decision, as virtually all the material herein is from the magazine. In fact, I would be willing to bet that practically all the recipes from the magazine in the last year are in this volume. I suspect it should be labelled `Everything but the Duds'.
The book has three main sections. The first, `Celebrations' is a collection of nine (9) menus based on specific common plus unusual twists on common events from around the world such as `A Russian Easter Feast' and `A Bohemian Thanksgiving'. Two things which immediately appeal to me about these menus aside from the excellent selection of themes is the large number of recipes per menu and the fact that the recipes are written to serve up to 10, rather than the usual 4 to 6.
The second, `The Menu Collection' is also recipes organized by seventeen (17) different themes conceived by season and occasion with some additional international themes and some menus for a somewhat larger than usual home entertainment gathering. Samples are `Dinner for a Dozen' and `A Modern Irish Supper'. I'm hard pressed to really see the difference between these two sections except that the first section is generally more formal.
The third section, `The Recipe Compendium' is organized like a conventional cookbook, except that it covers some topics such as breads and sandwiches which is not usually covered in conventional cookbooks.
Although I subscribe to `Gourmet', I have never found it as good a source on general cooking as `Cooks Illustrated', `Saveur', or `Fine Cooking', but it is a very good alternative to, for example `Cooks Illustrated' in that its recipes are created more to impress than to be practical for the amateur cook. Like all recipes published in periodicals, they have the advantage over individual authors in that they are reviewed by a standardized vetting process carried on by both culinary and literary (copy) editors, and I happen to know the `Gourmet' copy editor is very, very good.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the magazine's recipe style, I find they typically have little commitment to doing ethnically accurate recipes, but they are never entirely `easy' or entirely uninterested in ethnic recipe sources. On the one hand, for example, their recipe for the Spanish (Catalan) condiment, alioli is not only revisionist in the sense that it includes eggs, it is totally un-Spanish by including bottled mayonnaise as a principle ingredient. On the other hand, the recipe for Russian Easter bread which I have made several times and which I have compared to `authentic' versions is quite similar to recipes cribbed directly from the steppes. This book does me the special favor of being able to discard my worn copy of the `Gourmet' issue with this bread recipe, and I can ignore the mayonnaise alioli and rely on my various Spanish cookbooks for the real thing.
With a few exceptions, `Gourmet' generally doesn't go out of its way to give you quick versions, although the truly excellent index common to all recent `Gourmet' collections makes a point of identifying those recipes which can be done in 30 minutes or less. For all recipes, it does give the `active' time and the total time from start to finish. I suspect these times are for the experienced amateur cook. These books also have a truly excellent reference in the back for where to get any and all unusual ingredients or kitchen tools.
If you reallylike `Gourmet' magazine and you don't have a lot of cookbooks, this is an excellent `value added' collection of their recipes, which takes up less space than 12 issues. If you already own 500 cookbooks, it still has value in that it has some of the best entertaining material I have seen this side of Martha Stewart. I believe that if entertaining dinners is your thing, a complete set of these books may be as good or better than many books on entertaining, except for Miss Martha's classic `Entertaining'.
Better than I expected!

As life progresses, my taste for good food is being refined. My New Orleans Creole heritage is connected to good food, so encountering a great cookbook that adds to my life is always a joy. The Best of Gourmet: 20th Anniversary Edition, A Year of Celebrations, will be more than a fancy cookbook to place on your shelf for its beauty. I found inspiration on the pages and, of course, new things to cook as I embark upon maintaining my health (as a baby boomer). Try the Stir-Fried Chinese Broccoli (p. 132) or the simple pound cake with blueberries and lavender syrup (easy to make and not hard to modify).
Produced by Conde Nast Publications, the book offers sections on celebrations, the menu collection, the recipe compendium, in addition to tips for using the gourmet's recipes. If you are a cook or simply a lover of food, The Best of Gourmet: 20th Anniversary Edition, A Year of Celebrations should be on the top of your list for new experiences as your life evolves.

The Complete English Cocker Spaniel.......2003-09-29
This is a great book. If you are new to this breed it is very helpful. The begining of this book goes into the history of the breed. It then analsises the Standard of this breed. The author uses drawings to help us to understand the Standard. That is very helpful! The Chapter on grooming is fantastic! Bonnie Threfall provided the demonstration pictures. I learned a lot from this. The pictures were very helpful. It then goes on to talk about showing and breeding these beautiful dogs. The section I learned a lot from was Early Breeders and Breeders of Today and Tomorrow. I couldn't believe how many people I actually know or have met are in this book! It was and eye opener! I would recommend this book to anyone new to this breed! It's a must!
Good outsiders background for showing Encglish Cockers.......1998-10-11
This book represents a good background on the whys and wherefores of showing English Cockers, especially from the point of view of an outsider. With no real knowledge of showing dogs (as ours is a rescued pet), it prooves very interesting reading.
The book is very much North American in content with nearly 100 pages dedicated to both early and modern breeders in the US and Canada. This is not a shortcoming for an Australian reader as it generally makes for interesting reading.
Photography is all black and white, and includes detailed grooming images and a collection of historical images as well as many suberb photos of various dogs. The pups in chapter 7 "Breeding the English Cocker" are a real treat.
All in all, worth the purchase for someone who considers an English Cocker more than just another dog

Wonderful.......2001-08-10
A tremendous guide to owning a cocker, which has certainly helped me and by extension my spaniel Barry. There are fantastic tips on training and health care as well as tons of superb colour photographs. I enjoyed the book immensely and, though I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry is using the book as porn, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Lots of useful info.......2007-01-17
This book is so much better than many of the other breed books out there that offer nothing but basic knowledge filler. I was skeptical about buying it, but figured what the heck. It's worth the money and has lots of good information in it.
An excellent rundown.......2006-11-10
This book was a true insight for us into the life of a cocker spaniel, how to train them, live with them, feed them, groom them, walk them and treat them as one of the family. It was invaluable.

Book Description
In a decade that emphasizes comfort and casualness over opulence and excess, slipcovers provide a stylishly offhand, easy-going look to any room. In this new volume, the editors of House Beautiful magazine examine the ways in which slipcovers can transform and revitalize any decorating scheme. More than 120 beautiful color photographs illustrate the practical and aesthetic roles these great cover-ups can play, whether creating a seasonal change, protecting upholstery, giving new life to an old piece of furniture, or turning a simple chair into sumptuously dressed seating for a special occasion. Also presented are myriad examples of slipcover styles and the moods they create -- tailored or loose-fitting, romantic or urbane, classic or modernist.
Included, too, is advice from decorators and designers on choosing the perfect fabric from the reliability and durability of cotton to the lushness of velvet and chiffon, from the tranquility of solids to the playfulness of mixed patterns -- and adding those all- important finishing touches: welting, buttons and bows, ruffles, and skirtings.

Strength & Courage of the Black Race.......2005-02-03
Read the story of strength & courage of African-American people, in the midst of extreme racism. Before Wall street in NYC, there was 1st a "BLACK" wall street. The book is awesome to have in your library..a true history of the Black race
A Good and Informative topic.......2002-06-25
Black Wall Street was very imformative book and gave a lot of insight about how successful we were as a people and how unified the community was at that time. Mr. Hannibal Johnson did a wonderful job in potraying the devesatation brought upon the African-American community on May 31, 1921. This particular book should be in every African-American home as a must read to show our youth that in the past were have been a prosperous people.
Black Wall Street: From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa's Histo.......2000-04-02
Imformative as well as historical commentary on sucessful Afro-Americans during a time of extreme overt racial hatred. A positive example of what others have achieved in the past, in spite of the terrible consequenses, to help focus others in the future. An excellent contrast with your usual American history text verbage about the Roaring 20's. A must for Afro-American home libraries as well as American history buffs.
Book Description
The never-before-told story of five decades of African Americans on Wall Street
Here, for the first time, is the fascinating history of the African American experience on Wall Street as told by Gregory Bell, the son of the man who founded the first black-owned member firm of the New York Stock Exchange. A successful finance professional in his own right with close ties to leading figures in both the black financial and civil rights communities, Bell tells the stories of the pioneers who broke down the ancient social and political barriers to African American participation in the nations financial industry. With the help of profiles of many important black leaders of the past fifty years-including everyone from Jesse Jackson and Maynard Jackson, former mayor of Atlanta, to E. Stanley ONeal, COO and President of Merrill Lynch, and Russell Goings, founder of First Harlem Securities and cofounder of First Harlem Securities-he shows how in the years following World War II the growing social, political, and financial powers of African Americans converged on Wall Street. Set to publish during Black History Month, In the Black will be warmly received by African American business readers and general readers alike.

An Important Chapter In Wall Street History.......2002-07-14
I found the information in this book very informative and surprising that black participation in finance went back as far as it did. Stories of black stockbrokers and mutual fund salesmen in the 1950's to the investment bankers of today, records the slow but meaningful progress made on the Street in the last few decades. Hopefully, the progress will continue....
A Very Interesting Book.......2002-05-30
This book was an impulse buy for me, I have always had little interest in Wall Street but my son works in the securities industry so I thought I would read this for some background. I am very glad I did because I did not realize how deep African American history in the financial world is. I enjoyed the stories of people like Philip Jenkins and John Patterson, early pioneers who deserve greater recognition for their contributions. I think that this book is an important contribution of both African American and Wall Street history and does a good job of illuminating aspects about the history of finance that went unrecognized for far too long.
The first and best of its kind.......2002-03-27
This book fills in the missing pages of Wall Street's History. It documents how African-Americans overcame racism and other barriers to become successful in the financial securities industry. This should be part of every business school's curriculum.
a great pleasure to read..........2002-03-18
"I picked this book up after being attracted to its wonderful
book jacket and its words certainly lived up to my
expectations. As a young person, I had never heard of most
of the names in the book, and I am now filled with great
appreciation of the work they did to break barriers on Wall
Street. As a person of color, I felt it necessary to lear
about the pioneers of the past, and all they accomplished
despite the obstacles that hindered them. A necessary
book!!!"
An important brief history.......2002-03-17
On Wall Street, you are remembered only for your last price, trade, or quarterly report. History is not dwelled on; today's young leaders probably wouldn't know JP Morgan, Muriel Siebert, or EF Hutton if they tripped over them. Nor would many even know the names Hornblower, First Harlem, Bache, Hutton, or Shearson. But, as of this writing, with African Americans leading both Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse First Boston, it is nice (and necessary) to read a concise history of African Americans on Wall Street. Did you know that in the 1960's, Merrill Lynch, with 2500 fixed commission brokers, hired only 3 African American brokers? If not for this book, how many would know of Thorvald McGregor (MercerHicks) and Lawrence Lewis (Abraham & Co) , the first two African American Registered Reps in 1949? Or Abraham Cowing (FL Salomon); Howard Law grad Norman McGhee (McGhee and Company, the first black NASD securities firm); Philip Jenkins and Earle Fisher (Baruch Brothers) who started Special Markets; Lilla St John (Oppenheimer), the first black female broker in 1953; June Middleton (Cohen Simonson); Attorney Wylie H. Whisonant (Bache); Clarence B. Jones (Carter, Berlind, Sanford Weill, & Arthur Levitt); or Joseph L Searles (the first black full member of the NYSE in 1970)? The author, Gregory Bell, is the son of the Travers Bell, who founded the first black-owned member firm of the New York Stock Exchange, so he had deep access to the inside story of the black history of Wall Street. Although there were a couple of paragraphs that I might not have agreed with (the speculation that African Americans did not invest in equities in the 1950's because they were more concerned with basic civil rights than investing), the book remains an excellent, informative read. It is especially interesting when discussing the strategies of the early firms (selling mutual funds that required less financial sophistication); the trials of how companies were founded (For example, Daniels and Bell hatched their business plan after seeing The Wiz on Broadway, spent a year trying to get financing, and finally scored some needed fund after Myron Kandell wrote a story on their efforts and Nixon's SEC Chief William Casey pushed through an exemption to some rules for them and influenced his friends to invest in the firm), as well as when discussing the effect of Municipal policies to require that a percentage of their Public Finance business be done with minority owned vendors.
