Death of an Expert Witness (Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries)
ASIN: 0743219597
Release Date: 2001-07-31 |
Book Description
A famous mystery writer is found dead at the bottom of a dinghy, with both hands chopped off at the wrists. Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh, with help from his remarkable Aunt Jane, must discover who typed the writer's death sentence before the plot takes another murderous turn.
Unnatural Causes inspired Cosmopolitan to fervently hope, "if we're lucky, there will always be an England and there will always be a P. D. James."
Customer Reviews:
Solid, perhaps not her best.......2007-08-30
I really like P.D. James, so I think my review could be a bit biased. I have read four of her books and this is my second favorite so far. I thought the book had a couple of interesting twists, but it is really the feeling that I get when I read these books that I like. The descriptions are enough to put me in the place, but not get in the way of my vision of where we are. I also enjoy the characters, and don't feel they are over delveloped while their dialog seems truthful.
DEUS EX MACHINA ENDING.......2007-08-21
LOVED THE BOOK (AND ADAM DALGLIESH) UNTIL THE END. CONTRIVED AND TOTALLY UNSATISFYING RESOLUTION. OBVIOUSLY AN EARLY EFFORT, NOT UP TO JAMES' SUBSEQUENT NOVELS.
Most Enjoyable.......2007-03-18
I actually found it her most enjoyable so far, Having now read them in order I was less than impressed with the first, enjoyed the second, but found this third mystery refreshing and utterly enjoyable. Dalgliesh takes a vacation, visiting his aunt whose neighbors are a variety of writers who are a hilarious collection of characters. When one of them turns up dead in a dinghy with his hands chopped off, Dalglieh becomes a reluctant participant in finding the killer among them. Witty and wonderfully written, it makes me anxious to buy the next book!
Dalgiesh's Vacation.......2006-12-24
In this third mystery by P.D. James our author skirts the line of getting a bit cute--a little too wry for comfort. Realizing that she set the bar very, very high with her first two books, Ms. James seems to have retreated somewhat from focus on the mystery itself. Instead, this work is focused upon Inspector Dalgliesh; who the reader will note is destined to become one of the most well-known characters of the genre. So, not only does Dalgliesh take a bit of a vacation--so does the author.
Nevertheless, the writing is profoundly good. Inspector Dalgliesh begins to take shape in this book--his skills are evident and one learns more of his background, his likes and his dislikes. Ms. James even takes pains to prune the character back a bit. Though the mystery itself didn't get five stars, the development of Dalgliesh will pay vast dividends in future works. Like the corporations that take a charge against earnings in order to invest for the future, Ms. James' detour in "Unnatural Causes" allows her to focus uniquely upon her protagonist with results fully expected to pay rich rewards in her future installments.
VEDDY BRITISH MYSTERY.......2006-08-07
I haven't been a fan of P.D. James novels, and this is only my second attempt. UNNATURAL CAUSES has a very complex, but interesting plotline, some unusual eccentric characters and a strong sense of atmosphere in Ms. James' depiction of the various scenes in the novel.
Her main hero, Adam Dalgleish, is a bit of a mystery, and probably because it's my first encounter with him, not having followed along with his previous character development. The characters in the novel aren't very likeable and the murderer's identity came as somewhat of a surprise. The finale in the storm at the murderer's cottage was inventive, and James ties up the murders with a flare in the taped confession.
I don't know whether this will prompt me to read any more of Ms. James' books, but there's an obvious flair in her writing, and she does have a strong sense of characterization.

If you like your mystery mixed up with fast-paced emergency room action, this latest medical thriller by Leah Ruth Robinson (an emergency room technician herself) is just what the doctor ordered.
In between treating a wide variety of walk-in disasters, Dr. Evelyn Sutcliffe of Manhattan's University Hospital has to sleuth out who poisoned the mushrooms that her close friends consumed at a dinner party. Her friend and colleague Gary Seligman, a nurse who is heavily involved in a nasty labor battle between two rival hospital unions, lies gravely ill in the hospital. Gary has enemies in high-up places. Another possible suspect is Elise, a troubled young woman and a former patient of Dr. Phil Carchiollo (Evelyn's boyfriend). But there could also be a connection to a top doctor at the hospital--who has his own dirty secrets to hide.
As Robinson did in Blood Run and First Cut, she first stuns us with a whirlwind of detail about daily life in an emergency room, and then, when she has our full attention, drops in extra characters and plot to dazzle and baffle us. Guess what? It works. --Dick Adler
Book Description
Dr. Evelyn Sutcliffe spends her workday keeping Death at bay. But now it stalks her in her home...
The life-and-death struggle waged daily in the ER is a constant, integral part of Evelyn Sutcliffe's existence. Her home is her refuge from the frenzy, the anxiety, the uncertainty, and the blood. But on a night when she and her closest friends are supposed to be celebrating Evelyn's anniversary with her significant other, psychiatrist Phil Carchiollo, a would-be murderer has invaded her sanctuary. Now a colleague clings to life by the barest of threads, struck down by poison he ingested while cooking in Evelyn's Manhattan apartment -- a lethal surprise intended for one or more of Dr. Sutcliffe's invited guests...or for Evelyn herself. As chaos threatens to engulf her professional and personal worlds -- as sordid secrets about the friends and coworkers she thought she knew suddenly begin to come to light -- Evelyn Sutcliffe realizes that she must trace a murderous evil to its twisted roots. For everything she senses, everything she learns, suggests that a killer is lurking perilously close to her: in the halls of University Hospital...in the shadows of the ER...
Outside her bedroom door.

If you like Cornwell you will like this book.......1999-06-10
Evelyn Sutcliffe works as a third year resident at the University Hospital on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Her significant other, psychiatrist Phil Carchiollo, has lately turned moody and argumentative. Ironically, his withdrawal occurs even as their friends and family plan to celebrate the couple's one-year anniversary together. Guest Gary Seligman, RN, tries mushrooms from a food platter anonymously sent as a gift and soon dies from respiratory shock.
Evelyn believes the poisonous mushrooms were intended for her to sample, especially since she received a threatening note just a few weeks before Gary's death. Phil admits that a former patient has recently been stalking him. At first, Evelyn feels the woman wants her out of the way so she can attain her obsession, Phil. However, new evidence points towards Gary being the actual target by a criminal who will kill Evelyn and her cohorts to keep his identity quiet.
Leah Ruth Robinson is renowned for her entertaining medical thrillers. Her trademark, similar to that of Patricia Cornwell, is to leave readers feeling they are visiting old friends as characters return in new story lines. The lead couple is a delightful pair, especially Evelyn. UNNATURAL CAUSES is a winning medical thriller that will leave readers wanting more tales starring effervescent Evelyn.

The Tragedy of the Volsung and Burgund lines.......2003-05-08
In Dragons of the Rhine the second portion of the ancient tale is told with intense emotion and detail. While the story is slightly different in how certain things are carried out than in the eddic writings, it's still an excellent novel which brings the story alive in a way which can be enjoyed by all in this century.
Diana Paxon truly delves deep into each of the charachters and thier reasoning and emotions so that each side of this tragedy is understood even while the playing out is heartbreaking. In this book, as in the last, I still found myself thinking there could be another way out, a hope still left although I've read this story in many forms many times before. The tension of each moment is fully played out so one could see possible alternatives, though fate must lead the charachters on to what the Norns have woven for them.
A version of the story I'd reccomend, along with the more ancient tellings of this story.
The second installment of this trilogy is quite depressing.......1999-07-23
By the end of the first book, The Wolf and The Raven, Brunahild and Sigfrid have made plans for a glorious future together. Sadly, that future never comes to pass. Instead they are treacherously separated and end up married to other people. This is basically what happens in the original saga, but this is a difficult book to read because the characters go through such horrendous psychological trauma. The Burgundians want to bind Sigfrid to their clan. Queen Mother Grimahild and her son Hagano administer a magic potion to Sigfrid which causes him to fall madly in love with Gudrun, Grimahild's daughter. After they are married, Sigfrid then helps his new brother-in-law Gundohar win Brunahild for his wife. (Gundohar has been hopelessly in love with Brunahild for ages.) They play a dirty trick on her and Brunahild is oathbound to marry Gundohar. Eventually she realizes that she has been tricked and she bides her time and plots her revenge. Admittedly, this book made me cry, and very few books have had that effect on me. The story is really quite heart-wrenching. But, somehow, because Sigfrid and Brunahild are never able to live that glorious life they had in mind, the whole book has sort of an anti-climactic feel to it. There's certainly a lot of things happening, but it doesn't really live up to the promise of the previous novel.
An approachable adaptation.......1999-06-19
Despite repeated forays into sex and sexual acts (parts of this read far more like a dime-store harlequin novel than one of historical fiction), this gets the major thrust of the story across, and in fairly approachable terms. The conflict between pagan and Christian is well played-out, with the sympathies obviously lying with the latter. A good companion to the Arthurian sagas, though it dwells somewhat overmuch on the plottings and manipulations of women (probably a result, I think, of the author's gender). Still, enjoyable, and worth a look.
A wonderful retelling of the Nibelung and Volsung sagas.......1998-07-12
Paxson repeats Richard Wagner's experiment in retelling the classic Germanic sagas. I loved Wagner's trilogy, and felt the same way about Paxson's as well. These books will definitely have a place in my library, next to the authentic Nibelungenlied.

Customer Reviews:
The most delicious wine book.......2006-08-27
Hugh Johnson's marvelous book in a partial answer to a question that few of us have had the sense to ask. While many of us will spend valuable hours wondering: `which wine?' we rarely ask `why wine?'
What's the big deal? Why so many books, why such intense feeling? Wine is just the fermented juice of grapes. Yes, and music is just organized noise and sex is merely one of the ways in which organisms ensure perpetuation of their type.
The reason for the passion isn't to be found in alcohol alone. Almost any sugary solution will support fermentation, and it seems that just about every possible sweet liquid has been fermented from time to time. An amateur winemakers' guide in my library lists recipes for the production of wines from almonds, apples, bananas, barley, beetroot, birch sap, cloves, clover, eggplant, guava, lemons, oak leaves, orange juice, parsley, parsnips, peapods, squash, tea, tomatoes, wallflowers, yarrow and yes, to complete the alphabet, zinnias.
These 'wines'are all possible, but none of them exist. In fact, we restrict our winemaking to just a few varieties of grape. Why?
Aside from the many economic advantages, the fermented juice of grapes is delicious. At its most common, it's a fresh and fruity drink that quenches the thirst and gladdens the heart. At its most exalted, the basic flavors of the grape are transformed by fermentation and aging into a symphony of aromas and tastes and lingering associations. Both the bountiful nature of grape vines and the enormous appeal of their fermented fruit's juice has led civilized man to attach a lot of meaning to wine.
Johnson's book, a slimmed down version of the earlier Vintage , not only reminds us that the question of wine's importance needs to be asked, it goes a long way to providing an answer. His range of reference is impressive and his writing-witting and incisive-is impeccable. When you're ready to try to understand how wine attained its place in the modern world, there's no better place to start than this book.
Lynn Hoffman, author of The New Short Course in Wine
Vintage Writing.......2002-12-28
This is one of the most comprehensive and certainly one of the most enjoyable books on wine in any language. Combining excellent prose with impressive scholarship, Mr. Johnson offers a scintillating and often enlightening history of the world's best beverage. Strongly recommended for the historian or wine enthusiast.
Normally I dislike Hugh Johnson's work.......1999-08-24
However, I must say that I did enjoy this book. While one reviewer here didn't seem to be too interested in the history of wine, I found it very interesting, so interesting in fact that I am giving my paperback version to a friend and purchasing the hardback version for myself.
What I enjoy about the historical approach is that it helps me understand just how modern wine styles evolved. For example, seeing the influence of the Napoleanic wars on British purchasing and subsequent development of new wines (like Port) was interesting.
Lots of historic information, tedious presentation.......1999-02-21
It's a history book! If you love Hugh Johnson and love history, you'll love this. Well I love WINE and really like Hugh Johnson and I can't seem to finish this book!
Customer Reviews:
It has aged but, not too well.......2007-01-26
If you are interested in the history of wine it is a fine and interesting book. It was published in 1989 and the wine world has changed it needs to be revised. It does a poor job on wines of the new world; still it is a book worth reading.
The most beautiful wine book I ever read (and Ive read many).......1998-04-20
A real masterpiece (and an obvious work of love)! Combining extensive research and scholarship with wit and eloquence, the book traces wine and wine making from ancient times to our day. It is both the "Story of Wine" and the history of wine. The story is told in the context of its geographical, cultural and technical background. Exquisite pictures and maps abound. A truly extraordinary book!

Everything we needed to know.......2007-07-04
This book was exactly what I expected. It was well written, giving you everything you need to know about the breed (as a pet). We are in the process of adopting a SCWT, and we were very glad to have the extra info. It's also good to keep as a guide for later. Although informative, if you are thinking of a show dog, this is probably not the book for you.
Good Wheaten Basics.......2007-05-13
This is a good basic book about wheaten terriers. Gives you all the general feeding, care and training guidelines specific to Wheatens. Easy to read and enjoyable. If you're looking for an in-depth training guide or insight into Wheatens behaviors and particular habits however, this is not the book for you. Overall, good buy.
Owner's Manual.......2007-05-12
I really like this book for people that own Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. The book gives alot of good sound advice and sounnd tips on handling this particular breed.
Great book!.......2007-04-07
This book provides detailed information on everything you need to know about buying, training, and caring for a Wheaten Terrier. Great resource!
Helpul Read for a New Owner.......2005-10-29
This book is a great place to begin if you are new to owning a Wheaten. It has a lot of helpful tips for getting you off to a good start with your new member of the family. I read it cover to cover before bringing my puppy home, and continue to use it as a handy guide as issues of training and grooming arise.
Customer Reviews:
A very positive book about the most positive breed I know........1999-02-03
This book is a must for Wheaten owners. I have read it over and over. It is positive - in contrast to other books describing the history of the breed. It contains very valuable information on pedigrees, and it covers all the foundation dogs of the breed. I can't wait to read the new book on Wheatens by Roberta Vesley. Hopefully, it will be available soon.
This is Not a book for beginning owners........1998-11-27
I had decided that by looks alone I wanted to learn more about the adorable Wheaten and searched for the comprehensive book designed with the beginner in mind. What I found was more of a guide to the lineage and breeder ranking for world class show dogs. This was not what a first time want- to- be dog owner has in mind. The word "complete" is a misrepresentation. I would not recommend this book to a novice such as myself but rather to one who travels in the dog show and breeding circles.
Too much history, not enough about character of this breed.......1998-10-05
I had hoped to find a book that would give specific insights into the personality of these wonderful dogs. Unfortunately, this book gives little more than lists of Wheaten Terriers and history, without practical applications. There aren't even any color pictures. I was very dissapointed, and continue to look for a book that will help me make the most informed decisions in living with such a lively, and affectionate puppy.
GOOD INFO:-).......1998-03-18
I did a report on Wheatens and I found this book very helpful. Especially when it came to grooming. Not only did it give me info for my report but also on grooming my own Wheaten! I got an "a" on my report and I owe it mostly to this book! I think it also is a good guide for people who are interested in Wheatens. They are wonderful dogs, my mom loves them because they don't shed! They're not lke other terriers. My pup is the best ever. Wheatens rock!

Customer Reviews:
A thoroughly researched subject........2007-01-10
The scope of the book is narrow, but that's already known by the title.
Despite this, there are some excellent generalised chapters on the mechanics of early transfer printing processes, with photographs.
One of the authors did the bat-printing process himself, all photographed, in order to revive that lost art for this book.
Hundreds of patterns, part patterns, borders and shapes are illustrated, to help identify those Spode pieces that were made before the Copelands appeared.
Students of early transferware in general, and of 'pre-Copeland' Spode in particular, will find this a satisfying, even fascinating book, written by two men who really know their stuff.

REVIEW: Quilter's Newsletter Magazine says this book is "an excellent catalog of Nancy's work in mid-career with 19 color plates....and an introduction by Penny McMorris, who says Nancy 'has done more than make some of the finest quilts ever made. She's played a major role in encouraging the development of what, by now, has become an international art quilt movement.'"

better then the basics.......2007-09-17
This a good book for the person who knows more then the basics and want's to move on to the next step before going a course in futher education
Not for Amateurs!.......2007-09-15
This is an excellent reference book and readable (mostly) as well. That said, if you're a homeowner just looking for a "how-to" on maybe additional zoning or adding a new loop, this is not the book for you. You could quite literally design a system for the most complex residence using this book IF you know the basics of plumbing and HVAC work and are pretty good at basic mathmatics. It is not so much a how-to as a what-to book, so bear that in mind.
Well written resource, covers the bases very thoroughly.......2007-05-15
Great book. Not all the way through it yet, but giving me more confidence to do my own radiant heat project. Heat loss calcs not a big mystery any more. Minor lack of detail clarifications when it comes to underslab foam insulation options. EPS--Expanded foam is perfectly acceptable alternative (and cheaper) than XPS--Extruded, when ordered to engineered compressive strength requirements. Otherwise it is giving me excellent ideas for doing my job right the first time. Don't be disuaded by cost of book. Value is there in spades--included CD is very nice.
Hydronics design.......2007-05-14
As an architect, I was impressed with the clarity of the information and the step-by-step design process. It was so helpful, I even bought the software package the authors have developed for easily calculating hydronic designs.
Good Solid Engineering, THE Hydronics Reference Manual.......2007-02-02
I am a special projects manager for a major tankless water heater company. I bought this book to further my knowledge of hydronic and radiant heating so I could better assist our customers when they call me for advice.
I have some experience with plumbing in the solar field and have attended a class at Uponor, so I come to this book with an amateur's level of experience.
I have only started the book, but I can say that it is extremely complete and well written. From what I have come across in trade journal articles that deal with our business, John Siegenthaler is no doubt the "Rajah of
Radiant" and all things hot water.
I use it constantly now as a reference book to learn and to help others. I plan to use it someday soon to help design my own radiant system in my solar powered straw-bale retirement home "out yonder" somewhere.
The reason I rated it as a 4 instead of a 5 is because I could not find anything about using tankless heaters as a heat source. John covers everything from normal residential gas fired tanks to high efficiency complex boilers, but doesn't address tankless which is becoming more and more popular with radiant because of the low temperature requirements (85º ~ 100º).
This second edition is dated 2004. Unfortunately, hydronic technology is moving at warp speed and we are already in 2007!

Book Description
This is an important book, written by one of the top lighting designers in the country. Written at the end of a career as an architect and lighting designer, the book draws on the experience gained while living through a period of intense lighting development, from 1956 up to the millenium. It bridges the gap between the present day architect and lighting engineer, from the viewpoint of the 'independent lighting designer'.
'Lighting Modern Buildings' documents the part played by the independent lighting designer, leading to a greater understanding by architects and lighting engineers of the importance of lighting in architectural design.
The book starts with an exploration of the basic human needs of vision and the perception of our exterior world...the intellectual and the physical...since this is what lighting is all about. To do this, it is necessary to trace the development of daylight from earliest times up to the present day; the starting point for any lighting design is the 'natural' source.
Whilst an essential understanding of the role of daylight is the beginning, a knowledge of the various forms and properties of artificial light is essential; not only at night but during the day. In early buildings, there was one form of light - daylight - during the day and another - artificial - at night. No attempt was made to integrate the two. The situation today is different; there are many reasons for this, not least in the possibilities of modern structure. The book therefore has extensive coverage of day and night lighting and how it is designed to provide optimum solutions in building design.
A major portion of Derek Phillips' book is devoted to 'design'. Sufficient technical detail is provided in the book to permit an understanding of the design principles of each scheme. Schemes illustrated vary from small domestic buildings, churches and workplace, to those devoted to leisure and sport. At the end of each section a series of conclusions are drawn leading to a philosophy of lighting design.
* Learn how to design optimum lighting solutions
* Understand how to bridge the gap between architects and lighting engineers
* Discover how to integrate natural and artificial light sources

I wish my mom had done this for me........1999-12-19
A great idea, in an abnormally busy world a nice way to show some one that you care. This book has little tear a way sections that you can share with others. Read the book yourself and then share the tear aways with whom ever. Leave one on the mirror so the it is the first thing that the intended see's when they wake. I put a couple of these in my childs lunch bag and at first he gave me that silly grin, like I embarrassed him, but when a big concert was coming up and I forgot to include one he noticed. I am not usually the kind of person to speak my thoughts and this made it easier to cheer my family on in their day to day adventures.

Rich Detail and Vivid Recollections of a Monstrous Time .......2007-02-01
This memoir, rich in texture and detail, reflects the extensive research the protagonist's co-author, Steven Weingartner, seems to have done in preparation for writing this work (since so much of the history and background recalled here would have been beyond the ken of Lala Fishman, the story's narrator). The authors trace Ms. Fishman's family roots, from what was then the Ukraine into the Poland of that era, and provide, in remarkably vivid detail, a picture of what it was like to live through two back-to-back invasions of Poland: the joint Nazi-Soviet attacks of 1939 followed by the treacherous Nazi thrust against Stalin's Soviet Union in 1941. For Jews like Fishman, the advent of the Nazis into eastern Poland made a trying situation, under Communist rule, infinitely worse as the Nazis systematically undertook to exterminate the Jews.
Fishman recalls both the telling details and her own reflections as the Nazi terror swirled around her. From the initial indignities of Nazi restrictions on the Jewish population, to the construction of the ghetto and the unpredictable "actions" that swept Jews indiscriminately off the streets and into oblivion, to the whittling away of her own family members, one by one, as they are taken in the "actions," Fishman describes the growing sense of dread and helplessness that overwhelmed the Jews she knew. Witness to brutal hangings of Jews by Gestapo soldiers in the streets, arrested more than once herself, Fishman, on the verge of adulthood, finally recognizes that no help is coming and that there can be only one end to it all.
"It's a trap," she tells her distraught father and mother when the Nazis initially press them to enter the ghetto, a place to get all the Jews together she insists so they can finish them off. Her family, heeding her words, stays put for as long as they can. But they can't hold out forever and Fishman must finally flee the city of Lvov with what's left of her family (her broken mother and nine year old sister) after her uncles and father disappear and her elderly grandmother is grabbed from their apartment in a surprise Nazi raid.
But flight alone is barely enough, for Fishman can't escape the cruelties of the Nazis and their Ukrainian minions, nor the cold anti-Semitism of many Poles. Yet it's through other Poles, men and women of good will, that Fishman is finally enabled to survive. Relying on false papers and the training in Catholic ritual and teaching she receives in a crash course from Catholic friends, Fishman contrives to "pass" as a Catholic Polish girl. Still, she is taken and beaten by Nazi interrogators, stripped to her underwear for their inspection and finally, on winning a temporary reprieve, flees into the nearby countryside as the Gestapo pursue her and a friend. The journey takes Fishman into a new life, one of deception and paranoia where she must constantly live with the memory of her lost family, including the broken spirited mother and terrified nine year old sister she was forced to abandon to save herself.
Sometimes, though, there's almost too much research here, too much detail about things Fishman could not have known while she was living it all. But the episodes of flight and survival recalled by Fishman, and recounted here, make this story a valuable window into an era which saw the brutal eradication of Europe's Jews.
