5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! What a ride!.......2007-08-21

I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. It helped me gain a better understanding of love, sacrifice and sin. I actually gave this book as gifts. Wow! What a ride!

5 out of 5 stars Engaging!!.......2007-06-15

Another outstanding novel by Ted Dekker. Filled with everything from suspense to romance and faith and love. Emotionally engaging right from the start.

5 out of 5 stars Now I get it!.......2006-04-10

I graduated from college with a major in Bible.

I have preached in California and done mission work in India and Japan. I have read Hosea and listened to Michael Card sing.

But I have never understood the love of God like I do now after reading this book.

I was so frustrated by Helen's repeated forays back to Glen. Then at some point it hit me. This is what I am doing when I return to my favorite sins. I am putting God though pain, I am rejecting his love. But like the Father of the Prodigal, he welcomes me back. Like Jan welcomes Helen back.

Somehow Ted Dekker has the gift to make Biblical truth plain and relevant to me.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2005-12-12

This book is basically a romance with a major lesson. Had I known it was a romantic type book before starting it, I'm sure I would have passed on it as those have no interest for me. That would have been a major mistake. This is an excellent novel with a great message.

The story is primarily set in the United States in the 1960s. It has some flashbacks to Bosnia in WWII. The protagonist, Janjic Jovic, was a Yugoslav partisan during the war with a band that performed some horrific acts. This was mostly due to the pushing of the leader, Karadzic, who was a major bad guy. Jovic was heroic in challenging Karadzic over some of his atrocities. He ended up being imprisoned for his valor.

Two decades later Jovic is a successful author in Atlanta who has written a bestselling account of events during the war including Kardzic's evils such as the martyrdom of a priest and a young girl who refused to renounce Christ. This was a major life altering event for Jovic and many of his readers.

Jovic ends up becoming involved with Helen, who is a drug addict who is the sexual slave of a particularly evil man, Glenn Lutz. The story has elements that seem utterly absurd on the face. Jovic almost instantaneously develops an unconditional love for Helen who continues going back to Lutz for drugs in exchange for sexual favors.

Although few would continue to love and tolerate her in the face of her continual betrayals, Jovic does so with fervor. On the surface, he appears to be the biggest schmuck on the planet. However, Dekker does a masterful job of showing how we are Helen and Jovic represents Christ's love in the story.

To avoid spoiling the storyline, I will refrain from further commentary here. I would highly recommend this book and encourage readers to really focus on the underlying message. It is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 3.......2005-12-06

I thought When Heaven Weeps was the best book in the Martyr Song series. I couldn't get engaged with Heaven's Wager and I did enjoy Thunder of Heaven but this one was the better.
I really like Ted's use of love in his stories. It challenges us to look at how we view Christ's love or Christian love and review it. Are we just going through the motions? It should cause us to ask ourselves, "Would I go to the lengths that the main character does in this story?"
The villan(s) created great tension. If you have read Ted's other books before this one you would not know how the outcome would be. Ted has no problem killing good characters and causing you to blink a couple times.
This was a great action/love story.

4 out of 5 stars Kiernan is always worth reading........2006-05-18

Caitlin R. Kiernan, Low Red Moon (Roc, 2003)

When you pick up a book by Caitlin Kiernan, there are some things you know you can expect. Top-shelf writing. Strange houses with dark pasts. Efficient, excellent characterization. Another world, in the layer below (above?) ours, with all manner of wondrous things in it. Leisurely pacing, to allow you to enjoy the experience. And, yes, you get all of them in Low Red Moon.

Deacon Silvey had two careers, one as a psychic helping out the police department, the other, his full-time one, as a drunk. After meeting Chance, the woman who was to become his wife, he left both behind. Now, a police detective calling in an old favor has landed Silvey's name for an unsolved case. Against the protestations of Chance, Deacon goes with the detective to the crime scene and finds the body of a friend of his from the old days. What Deacon sees entangles him in a web that goes far beyond this murder, both in terms of geography and in terms of Deacon's past. Meanwhile, Chance is having bloody visions of her own.

If you're already aware of Kiernan's work, then you know the level of quality you can expect. If you don't, some of the references here might confuse you; Kiernan's work is an ever-growing web around a mythology upon which this novel touches. You might want to start with some of her earlier work. When you get caught up, though, Low Red Moon is a treat. ****

4 out of 5 stars Good Scary Tale.......2006-03-11

After reading "Bradbury Weather" in Subterranean magazine, I decided I wanted to have a closer look at Caitlín R. Kiernan's fiction. After some consideration, I picked up Low Red Moon from a local bookstore and read it through. I was enthralled, having a harder and harder time putting it down the farther I got into the work.

First off, the present tense narrative threw me in the beginning. Modern fiction conditions the reader to read in the past tense so when I started reading the book; it was difficult and slow. However, it worked well with the flashback being in past tense. The changes in tense gave the reader a definite indicator when they were in the story. I overcame the tense issue about 50 pages in and was reading at full speed.

Another problem I had, which is entirely with me, was I was trying to define what Narcissa was. At first, taking a hint from the title, I thought she was a werewolf. Then I began to doubt that, thinking that perhaps she was a ghoul. I knew Kiernan had steeped her story in Lovecraftian Mythos and because I knew that, I tried to drop the character into a preconceived hole. Needless to say, the she did not fit in any holes, but she was still an enjoyable and very flawed character.

The story is well told over all. The pacing. I enjoyed Detective Downs, Starling Jane and Scarborough Pentecost. The description was overwrought at times, but it did not slow the story too much. Her world was also well thought out and not fully explained - which is good. I liked how she pioneered her own mythos, not falling into the worn ruts that modern fiction and role-playing games have made.

I do have to say, I found the ending was too sketchy. I understand why the scenes seem to skip was characters fade in and out of consciousness and action. However, I am interested in exactly how Deacon left the tunnel with the baby. I did not expect it to be an easy thing and with leaving it out of the story, it detracted from it.

I would definitely recommend this story to friends interested in fantasy, horror or the Lovecraftian vein (in fact, I already have). Kiernan has a very distinct style, and I look forward to reading future works from her.

2 out of 5 stars Ever Heard of Roger Corman?.......2006-01-18

"Low Red Moon" includes some wonderful characters; well-defined, thought out, and at times, very sympathetic. However, the plot is beyond convoluted. I was especially disappointed by the ending. Its head on collision with my memories of H.P Lovecraft drove me to re-watch the awful interpretation of "The Dunwich Horror," produced by Roger Corman in 1970. The ending of "Low Red Moon" was so similar (albeit, minus the Hounds) that I almost threw the book across the room. It's one thing to build on another author's work but an altogether different thing to use the same plot, ideas, and very world of another author. Bitter disappointment from a writer who can actually write.

5 out of 5 stars Lovecraft's Heir.......2005-05-25

This is the sequel but not quite sequel to Threshold. Those of you that read Threshold will know what i am talking about and those of you that haven't you should. This novel center's around Deacon and Chance Silvey, now married with a baby on the way. All is not good in Silvey world because Deke is a recovering alcholic and spends all of his days trying not to drink. Than one day Deke is called into a investigation to use his Psychic Abilities to try and get a lead on the murder of a previous associate of his. What he finds is not pretty.

It turns out that a hybrid monster of a sort is on a killing spree and has her sights set on Deacons baby who she think's will get her admitted to The Hounds(see frank belknap long). This monster that is tracking the Silvey's is also being hunted herself as well. The two trackers are Scarborough and Mary Jane and they have been assigned as agents of The Hounds to track the hybrid monster that goes by the name of Narcissa Snow down and kill her.

This story is very well written but not scary in the same sense as Threshold. Ms. Kiernan really is the heir to Lovecraft in every way and is superior in some ways as well. I reccomend this book to anyone out there who is looking for a good horror novel in the same vein as Lovecraft and his circle.

5 out of 5 stars Dive in.......2004-09-09

I read "Low Red Moon" months ago. It was the first book I'd ever read by Caitlin Kiernan. I devoured the text in a matter of hours, set it down satisfied with the tale, and then the haunting began. Should I permit my mind to wander (as it is wont to do) Narcissa Snow comes to visit. I think about the tragedy and horror that was her life, wonder what if - what if she had been accepted by someone, anyone? What if her mother had been a part of her life? What if the creature that was her grandfather did not exist? Deacon and Chance stop by from time to time to torture me with trying to figure out what makes them tick. It is a true sign, I think, of a great writer when she creates characters so real, so intriguing, that long after their tale is done, you cannot forget them.

I have just begun my love affair with Caitlin Kiernan's writing. I won't bemoan the fact that I just "discovered" her, instead I am delighted that there are so many books already written that I can indulge in. With a new book just released and no signs of Kiernan's vast talent waning, I have many years of reading pleasure awaiting me.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than It Looks.......2005-03-11

This is my favorite example of Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover. Everything, and I mean everything about this cover screams dreck. To begin with, there's the title, which seems just a step above completely juvenile. Then there's the cover art. Rowena is a fairly decent artist, but she will do quick work for cash, and this cover, featuring a stereotypical 80s Valley Girl on a skateboard with a horrible little runt dragon in front of pastel palm trees, fuses the horrible with the massively incorrect. (No Valley Girls, palm trees, or skateboards included. The dragon, as described, is much prettier and larger to boot.) And the blurb on the back uses every single Southern California hook possible... but the book has only a general connection to California at all, which merely is a setting (and it takes place in the mountains anyway!)

What are we left with? Why, a personal recommendation, which is how I came across this. It's good standard fantasy, with a few horrible puns thrown in (all told by the participants, though, not part of the scenery as in Xanth.) It's a book about friendship, and about chasing dreams, and about fighting huge horribly ugly evil dragons with the help of the small pretty ones...

Agewise, one could easily hand this to a twelve-year-old and have complete comprehension. There might be some topics that are age-inappropriate, however, so screen it before handing it to your kid. I also think this will appeal more to girls than to guys at that age; there's not nearly enough action for someone fond of video games.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most beloved books.......2002-04-12

I read this book many years ago and it brought me fully into the world of fantasy. I didn't understand some of the book then, but I finally found a copy and am re-reading it. The book is an incredible tale what will drag you in and keep you staring at the pages untill you feel that there's nothing else in the world. A great read, and a beautiful story. I recomend it for anyone who likes dragons or just likes a good fantasy novel.

Susan Friedland wrote The Passover Table in 1994, and it is still one of the most outstanding books for this holiday. Before offering recipes, Friedland presents the roots of Passover in Jewish history and in the Torah. She explains the purpose of particular parts of the Seder, the ceremony that marks the observance of Passover, including the famous Four Questions.

Food has a central role during the entire seven days of Passover. Recipes in The Passover Table include dishes served by Jews with roots in northern and central Europe, and those whose culinary influences come originally from Mediterranean Europe (Ashkenazim), North Africa (Sephardim), or the Middle East. In addition to Gefilte Fish and Tzimmes (a sweet meat and vegetable stew) for Seder nights, the dishes for the rest of the week include Mina de Pesha, a layered chicken pie made with matzos; airy, puffed Potato Chremsel; and Birmuelos, Sephardic doughnuts served for dessert or breakfast. Large color photos encourage you to try unfamiliar recipes by showing the mouth-watering results.

        Book Description

Passover has always tested the ingenuity of even the most creative Jewish cooks. With The Passover Table, what was once a challenge becomes a delight. Here are more than forty delicious recipes, both traditional and modern, for celebrating the holiday, organizing seders, and preparing meals throughout the Passover week.

Susan R. Friedland offers marvelous and reliable versions of all the classic fare, including Matzo Balls and Chicken Soup, Gefilte Fish, and Borscht, as well as contemporary dishes to update your Passover table, such as Spinach Pie, Turkish Sweet and Sour Artichokes, and Tangine of Chicken.

With its thorough explanations, lavish full-color photography, and delicious recipes, The Passover Table is the only book you need to celebrate the beloved and joyous commemoration of the Exodus.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Passover books I have..........2007-05-14

This is one of the best Passover books I have. The recipes are new and modern and definitely give an updated alternative to other books that are out there. You will definitely find all of your traditional recipes and many more. For example, the veal pocket with apple stuffing is so amazing that my family wants me to make this more than once a year. Also, these recipes are easy to double if necessary especially if you are serving a large crowd. I have been using this collection for years and had to order a second one when I thought I lost my first copy. Well, it's nice to know that I will have an extra one to give to someone who enjoys cooking for the holidays as much as I do.

3 out of 5 stars Lavish illustrations but too few recipes.......2006-03-19

I bought this book shortly after it first came out, in hopes of improving my Passover repertoire. Passover can be a true culinary challenge for those who keep kosher. No pasta, no pizza, no sandwiches--and two major "dinner parties" (seders) to give! There's nothing like a batch of new recipes to liven up the menu.

Frankly, "The Passover Table" was a disappointment. The book only has forty-three recipes, and many of them are for old standbys like chicken soup, matzoh balls, chopped liver, roast chicken, and a very basic pot roast. For those, any Jewish cookbook will do. Friedland includes a number of interesting Sephardic recipes, but they're not enough to justify the price of the book. The illustrations are plentiful and generally very lovely, but their lavishness underlines the thinness of the content. As for the recipes themselves, I've had a 50-50 success rate for the ones I've tried, and I've had minor problems with most of them.

Fantastic Recipes - all work out - I have made at least 80% of them over the past 4 years - and use this book as my staple for the two seders !

Good alternative recipes from the old traditional ones - and each recipe has a picture along with it - for ideas of presentation.

I strongly recommend this book to EVERYONE !

I picked up this book when I was trying to find out which dog I wanted after narrowing down my choices. This book is pretty general and doesn't go into much detail. I still look at it once in a while, but still, if you're looking for a lot of information about the Mini Schnauzer, you're only going to find general info in here.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Miniature Schnauzer.......2002-06-28

This is the best book about Miniature Schnauzers that I have read. A friend gave us a Schnauzer and this book fits him like a glove. It would be a wonderful addition to the family library even if you don't have a Schnauzer. It's really all you need to know.

3 out of 5 stars Its an OK, brief overview of the Miniature Schnauzer, but.........2001-05-30

For [a few dollars] more, you can get the same info in "The Miniature Schnauzer : Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet".

I'm a new Miniature Schnauzer owner and I wanted to get all the info I could about these guys. So, I ordered both the books and read this one first. Then, I picked up the larger "...Owner's Guide..." and was very disappointed, since after a couple of sentences it was "deja vu all over again". When I finally read the fine print inside the jacket I found that this is an abridged version of the larger book. Hence the "Essential...." handle. The two books sound like they have different authors but not really. The "et al" portion is not well defined. In reality, the "et al" are part of the committee that authored the larger book. Oh well, its a small dog isn't it?

Neither of the books go into the kind of detail I was looking for. For example, I wanted to know how to clip this guy, but all it "essentially" says is to take it to your groomer and ask questions...as if they want you around while they're buzzing your little guy or girl.

If I were to do it over, armed with my present wisdom, I'd probably buy the larger book and forget this one, although the larger book doesn't get into any more detail than this one. Maybe, I wouldn't buy either.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS SAD EXCUSE FOR A WREATH BOOK !!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-05

I would not buy this book if I were you. Here's why:

Reason # 1: It's very outdated. The copyright is 2001 but the copyrights for the materials and ideas comes from books that have copyrights from 1988-1995. This book is a compilation of other outdated books. There is not one idea from after 1995.

Reason #2: The wreaths are very unattactive (like one that is made out of potatoes, seriously, potatoes???? or the one made out of garlic cloves !!!) I don't think that I would make even 1 wreath out of the 200 ugly designs.

Reason # 3: There are no step-by-step directions. Each page has 1 picture of the finished wreath with a few sentences on what to do. There is no material list provided for the wreath you are trying to make. If I wanted to just eyeball it and make a wreath from something that I see, then I would go to a craft store, where they have hundreds of premade (and expensive) wreaths to look at. But I bought a book for ideas and instructions which are not provided in this book.

I hoped that I have helped you make an informed choice on whether or not to buy this book. I don't know what the other reviewers were thinking. I would keep looking if I were you.

5 out of 5 stars helpful wreath book.......2003-12-27

I have this book and the ideas are quite helpful.

the steps are easy to follow and can be done with just about any material you can find. the designs are beautiful.

i would recomend this book to any floral designer.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2002-08-27

I picked up this book to see if I would be able to make some wreaths for my home. Having never done it before, it is very encouraging to see the instructions photographed and clearly written in this book. The wreaths are absolutely gorgeous and detailed, and I loved seeing the different types. Being a beginner, I also appreciated the listings of all the flowers and supplies needed for each wreath, which are included in the descriptions. I'm buying it for my daughter, Emily, who has made some nice wreaths on her own. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about making something beautiful for their home.

What kind of wreath do you want to make?

Oh, you want to make a square wreath? Oh, you want to make three wreaths entwined together?

What! you want to make a vine wreath with each vine a different color?

No problem. How to make these wreaths and 197 more are in this book. The Complete Book of Wreaths is really a compendium of the wreaths of many different wreath makers. Most of these wreath makers have had other books published. It is great to find all of their talents pooled in this one work.

The first 40 pages of this book are devoted to wreath making basics. These are concise instructions on how choose or even make your own wreath base as well as basic points for choosing materials to complement your wreath, like seed pods and ribbons.

The next 180 pages are a wreath a page in full color with descriptions for each one that explain what is in the wreath and how to create one like it.

The last section is on Novel wreaths like all feathers and potatoes and moss???? And, you won't want to miss Terry Taylor's wreath of broken cups and cup handles.

This book only has wreaths, just wreaths and it is wonderful.

            Book Description

Cross stitching is a popular and fun way to create beautiful

needlework projects; however, those with poor eyesight may

have a difficult time working with such small detail. Author

and expert cross stitcher B.J. McDonald took that into

consideration when she created her ?tired eyes? projects,

which she has compiled in Easy See, Easy Stitch Cross Stitch.

McDonald?s team of designers created over 30 delightful

projects, which are easy to see and work with yet remain

elaborate and appealing. Taking care not to create patterns

that might appear simplistic, the designers created projects for

afghans, table runners, pillows, towels, wearables and more.

All projects use Aida cloth, with 10 stitches to the inch or less,

and all charts and text are in large print for easy reading.

Crafters with ?tired eyes? will enjoy creating these lovely

cross-stitch crafts themed around gift-giving, special events,

            holidays and home decor.

              Book Description

Facadism presents a critical analysis of a concept that is central to the way in which the modern city is being remodelled. Facadism involves the preservation of historic facades, the creation of facsimiles in front of new buildings, and the decorative exercises of postmodernism. It has been accused of destroying architectural innovation, of divorcing the interior and exterior of buildings, and of reducing townscapes to stage sets. Yet defenders of facadism describe it as the way to link urban tradition and progress.

In this detailed study, Jonathan Richards assesses architectural and townscape philosophies and their aesthetics, the principles of urban conservation, the process of heritage planning and the market forces of urban development. He builds a complete picture of the causes and effects of facadism in the 20th century.

                    Book Description

This captivating and illuminating book is a memoir of a young black man moving from rural Georgia to life as a student and teacher in the Ivy League as well as a history of the changes in American education that developed in response to the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and affirmative action. Born in 1950, Horace Porter starts out in rural Georgia in a house that has neither electricity nor running water. In 1968, he leaves his home in Columbus, Georgia—thanks to an academic scholarship to Amherst College—and lands in an upper-class, mainly white world. Focusing on such experiences in his American education, Porter's story is both unique and representative of his time.

The Making of a Black Scholar is structured around schools. Porter attends Georgia's segregated black schools until he enters the privileged world of Amherst College. He graduates (spending one semester at Morehouse College) and moves on to graduate study at Yale. He starts his teaching career at Detroit's Wayne State University and spends the 1980s at Dartmouth College and the 1990s at Stanford University.

Porter writes about working to establish the Þrst black studies program at Amherst, the challenges of graduate study at Yale, the infamous Dartmouth Review, and his meetings with such writers and scholars as Ralph Ellison, Tillie Olsen, James Baldwin, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He ends by reflecting on an unforeseen move to the University of Iowa, which he ties into a return to the values of his childhood on a Georgia farm. In his success and the fulfillment of his academic aspirations, Porter represents an era, a generation, of possibility and achievement.
