Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Things are beginning to come together, after several incidents earlier begin to make more sense. No-one can accuse the overarching storyline here of being told at a breakneck pace, that is for sure. This, you presume, is deliberate, so each one of these can happily be told as a stand alone, while still developing the main thread.
This is what Brian Azzarello was born to do........2006-06-07
Brian Azzarello, 100 Bullets: The Hard Way (Vertigo, 2005)
Every time I pick up another Brian Azzarello book, I finish it thinking "there's no way he can top that." And, so far, every time I've been proven wrong.
The Hard Way takes us into the second half of Azzarello's epic 100 Bullets, and it contains his finest creation to date: Gabe, a little man with a very big trumpet. Gabe is not a main character, but he ends up being, from the standpoint of the book's quality, its most important asset.
What the book is actually about is the mission given to Wylie Times at the end of Book 6, the one that caused every 100 Bullets reader's jaw to hit the carpet. This mission puts Wylie back into close contact with Dizzy, and much of the book's pace comes from the back-and-forth between the two of them, the secrets they need to keep from one another, what they choose to reveal, and the times in which they find themselves forced into partnership. Gabe is just a part of the scenery, most of the time, a kid who finds himself in a complex relationship with Wylie, the only person who ever stood up for him.
The first three-quarters of the book is setup; as with all of 100 Bullets, though, the setup is always fun, as Azzarello is capable of keeping the reader interested with a minimum of verbiage, letting Eduardo Risso's wonderful artwork do much of the talking. Then, once the dominoes are set up, Azzarello gives them a nudge, and everything comes toppling down in a design that looks nothing like what you expect it to-- but that ties everything up anyway.
The Hard Way is more than just an installment in a series of graphic novels (or comic books, depending). Where 100 Bullets has often been passed off as a genre noir title-- and in a number of cases, it's simply been satisfied to rise to that level and float-- The Hard Way transcends both graphic novel-dom and noir, in the same way Watchmen or the best issues of Love and Rockets did. The Hard Way is good, solid literature. There are a number of excellent entry points into the world if graphic novels, if you've dismissed them as "just comics" up to this point; while I'm not sure 100 Bullets is one of them (because of the series' weaker volumes), once you've got a few Watchmens, Sandmans, and Preachers, under your belt, tackle 100 Bullets. When you get to The Hard Way, you'll be able to experience it in all its glory. I envy you the chance to experience it for the first time. **** ½
"it's never about easy or hard Shepard...and always about the job at hand".......2005-12-31
this title basicly summs it up, what is it like beeing a minutman. and here we are...holding in our hands so far azzarelo's best piece of work! the story of most tragic minutman wylie Times and his confrontation with his past, with his decisions and with his teacher, mentor, father's figure - Agent Shepard. the story is split into several time frames and jumps from one to another with such a cinematic simplicity. This book is definetly for readers that are already familiar with 100 bullets mythology.
This book is one of those that keeps you thinkink about it days after reading it,and makes long months between 100 bullets trades even longer.
The ultimate 100 bullets book!.......2005-10-23
This has got to be the best volume of the infamuos series. It has the seven-part story arch 'wylie runs the voodoo down' and one shot stories Prey for reign and coda smoke. In this volume we finally find out the history of the trust and the minute men,we also get introduce to a new character and minute man Victor. We also finally get to see wylie as a re-awakened minute man and more pieces of the puzzle get put together, once again the 100 bullets team wraps up another masterpiece. This is the best book in the series and one of my all time favourites, the best ongoing series out there.
100 Bullets does it again.......2005-10-16
Collecting issues 50 - 58 of 100 Bullets, The Hard Way solves the Wylie Times plot. After given one of the famous guns and briefcases from Agent Graves, Wylie was told to kill Agent Shepherd.
Additionally, by the end of the book, two of the Minute Men sleeper agents are activated. If you've been following the books, you already know the characters, although you may not know who they are.
As always, the writing is top notch. The characters are developed in layers and the plot continues to unfold as everything falls into place.
I'd like to go more in depth into reviewing this, however, it's difficult to explain to someone unfamiliar with the series and those that are familiar with the series aren't going to want the details of the stories from me. They're going to buy the book, regardless of what I say. Because it's that damn good.
If you're unfamiliar with the series, but are a fan of comics with great stories, this is something you can sink your teeth into, but you'd do best to start from the beginning.
Book Description
Saul didn't have so many friends that he would give one up without a fight. So when Matt disappeared, Saul started a search that led through Matt's kitchen window -- straight into a world of magic and desperate danger!
Saul discovered that in this world, his love of verse made him a wizard. But his newfound magic earned him a dreadful foe: Queen Suettay, a false monarch without peer for wickedness and corruption. A fearsome sorceress herself, with armies steeped in evil ready to obey her every sinful command, she determined to break Saul's growing power -- or win his soul for Satan.
Fortunately, Saul earned some stalwart friends, as well: Gruesome the troll and young Squire Gilbert; Saul's own guardian angel, and the beautiful -- if unsubstantial -- Angelique. But he'd need the help of the mysterious Spider King to spin a web strong enough to trap this tyrant!

Nothing Original Here.......2005-10-25
This book is just a rehashing of The Oathbound Wizard. Nearly all of the major scenes are identical. The only difference is that they are told from Saul's POV. It's not really interesting, and I'm having a hard time reading it because it feels like like reading The Oathbound Wizard all over again. I understand that Stasheff was probably getting bored with the series, but he still could have done a better job with this one.
Not as good as the rest.......2002-09-07
My main problem with this book is that it takes Saul's POV the entire time, and to be honest, his need to contradict himself all the time just annoys the heck out of me and takes up too much space. I'm surprised Saul has a guardian angel at all actually. Narlh is the best reason to keep reading. And how stupid is Saul to never realize that Matt is the Lord Wizard of Merovence despite being told that at least 5 times in 3 days??? That one fact alone nearly made me stop altogether, till I realized Matt had to show up sooner or later so I kept on.
This author has a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor!.......1999-08-30
This book is just full of wonderfully ironic happenings. The main charachter has a delightfully sarcastic sense of humor and the author relly did a good job of letting you know what he is thinking. This whole series is full of awsomly wierd creatures and the human element is definatly there. The book has a livley plot full of humor.
An extremely hilarious book!!.......1999-02-13
The Witch Doctor is a marvelous book. Complete with humour, a great plot and likeable characters, this book is a great read. I would reccomend this book to all readers who like humerous fantasy.
It makes you think about good vs. evil........1997-07-25
This is the second book I've read in this series and I found it just as interesting as the first one. The poetry is fun, but it makes you think at the same time. I found myself looking at our own world and the endless conflicts between good and evil, both between people and within myself

A revolutionary new low-carb diet for diabetics by the doctor who pioneered a successful new approach to the disease--with 100 original mouth watering recipes. For diabetics, diet is more than a lifestyle choice--it*s the key to controlling the course of their disease. Many diabetics struggle their entire lives to maintain a healthy weight, but the guidelines given to them by the American Diabetes Association have proven unhelpful in regulating blood sugar--the critical component in keeping diabetes in check. In THE DIABETES DIET, Dr. Bernstein serves up the groundbreaking low-carbohydrate approach to diabetes care that has enabled his patients to take control of their disease by regulating their blood sugar without the usual swings.Dr. Bernstein himself is living proof of the success of this method, and he has the science to back it up. Plunging into the current debate on low-fat vs. low-carb diets, he shows that, especially for diabetics, low-carb is what will change lives--and he offers 100 delicious all-new recipes to help keep diabetics on track for life. The recipes and advice in THE DIABETES DIET will provide readers with an easy-to-follow guide for controlling their disease and regaining their health and well-being. * There are an estimated 18 million diabetics in America, and their number is increasing every year--yet there are no low-carb diet books appropriate for diabetics. * Since publication in 1997, Dr. Bernstein*s Diabetes Solution and its revised 2003 edition have sold more than 120,000 copies. * An engineer by training, Bernstein pioneered blood glucose self-monitoring and the tight control of blood sugar that is now accepted as the standard treatment of diabetes. He entered medical school at the age of 45 in order to publish his findings.

The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution.......2007-09-22
My sister in law is a diabetic and she follows "the Diabetic Diet" given to her by her physician. She could not get her sugar down and kept on buying the recommended products with Splenda. After she read this book and implemented it in her life, her blood sugar is normal and she has lost weight. There are a lot of stealth sugars in "the Diabetic Diet" most often recommended by physicians that shoot up your sugar instead of controlling it. Absolutely great book, it has saved her life and my husbands as well. Even if you are not a diabetic you should follow this program to lose weight. Wonderful.
Great Dr. Bernstein book.......2007-09-13
Even though Dr. Bernstein is a type 1 diabetic, his writing also will help type 2 diabetics keep blood sugar low and from developing complications.
Diabetes Diet - The only way to deal with this Disease.......2007-01-15
Dr. Bernstein educates us in the real reasons diabetics struggle to maintain low blood sugar levels - carbohydrates. His book(s) outline in simple language how to control what you eat and more importantly how to manage your sugars by limiting carbs. His insight into the disease as a Type 1 diabetic himself, has made it easier for me to set myself up for a healthier lifestyle by eliminating unnecessary carbs, understanding how the body of a diabetic handles carbs and then planning meals based on these principles.
I have lost weight easily, maintained low steady blood sugars, and finally understand how this disease that has devastated members of my family, can be managed by what I put in my mouth. Thank you Dr. Bernstein for your years of diligent research. You will make a difference in the world of diabetes. This should be required reading for all doctors of diabetics.
diet for the rich.......2007-01-12
Dr.Bernstein does a good job of explaining his theory, but most working people would find it very difficult to follow his strict guidelines. The recipes contained items I have never even heard of - at least they aren't found in the kitchen of any of my mid-Ohio friends. The book did make me more aware of why I should eat a low-carb diet - but absolutely no bread, no sugar, no pasta, no rice - ever???? Tell the cafeteria at work!
A Must Read Book for ANY Diabetic.......2007-01-12
This book in addition to Dr. Bernstein's book on "The Diabetes Solution" are must reads for any diabetic, parent of diabetic, or concerned family member. The two books prompted me to launch the diabetes solution website.
Let me put it succinctly--THIS BOOK IS A SOLUTION TO DIABETES.
What does that mean? It means that after 28 years of following the ultra-high carb diet of the ADA (which now that I have my blinders off makes zero sense) I have NORMAL blood sugars. My A1C went from 8.0 while on the ADA (which they see as only slightly high) to 5.0 (almost normal). I still have a bit of fine tuniing to go.

Baking quite possibly the best cheesecakes in the universe, Junior's Restaurant is a legend in its own right. Located in downtown Brooklyn, this home away from home has been wooing New Yorkers since it first opened its doors on Election Day, 1950. Three generations of the Rosen family have served up not only cheesecakes, but also a wealth of other diner delicacies, from Brisket Melt to out-of-this-world ice-cream sodas. Written by the sons of founder Harry Rosen, Welcome to Junior's combines slices of Brooklyn's history and culture with fascinating stories, and, thankfully for us, more than 100 recipes, including 7 for cheesecake. Of course, the real cheesecake recipes are a closely guarded secret, but the Rosens share a similar blueprint with us that ensures "you'll soon be experiencing the taste of ecstasy." There are no soggy graham-cracker bases here--just a lovely layer of light sponge-cake, which can be prepared in the home kitchen in five simple steps. Then, a bounty of cheesecake toppings are yours, including fresh blueberries, juicy pineapple, decadent chocolate swirl, and even pumpkin. Lest we forget what else Junior's has to offer, the Rosens share recipes for, among others, Baked Meat Loaf with Mushroom Sauce, French Fried Onion Rings, even Matzoh Ball Soup.
Junior's is much more than a diner; it is an experience, an urban retreat where good old-fashioned service still exists, where fantastic food is a guarantee, and where regulars and newcomers are all welcome. If you can't make it there in person, let Welcome to Junior's transport you there with words. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Welcome to Junior's! is a nostalgic tour of Brooklyn from the 1930s to the 1990s with reminiscences and recipes from the legendary restaurant renowned for its rich and creamy cheesecake. Junior's holds a special place in Brooklyn, also home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. As well as a decade-by-decade history of the golden age of Brooklyn with wonderful photographs from the past fifty years, scattered throughout are memories and stories of how Junior's grew from its modest beginnings to its success today.
From the very first day Junior's opened its doors in 1950 on the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush Avenue Extension in downtown Brooklyn, three generations of the Rosen family have worked hand in hand to build their restaurant into one of the most popular eateries in the borough today. First Harry Rosen, then his sons, Marvin and Walter, and now his grandsons, Kevin and Alan, have worked tirelessly to create and continue a famous Brooklyn neighborhood tradition -- a family restaurant that commands loyalty from its customers, and one to which they return day after day.
Going to junior's is an event. It is a place that has become a home-away-from-home for Brooklynites over the years and is a popular destination for people from the entire New York metropolitan area. Today, just as on the day it opened, Junior's remains a quintessential Brooklyn phenomenon. It even looks remarkably like it did in the fifties -- bright orange booths that seat nearly four hundred, a glistening counter surrounded with diners, a busy soda fountain, and, of course, the bakery, brimming with all kinds of cheesecakes, homemade pies, towering layer cakes, and buttery pastries. Not only does Junior's stand for the best of ethnic, down-home fare but it also serves the best cheesecake in New York -- at the last count over four million slices each year.
Welcome to Junior's! is not only a memory book to treasure but a cookbook with over one hundred favorite recipes. From Junior's signature cornbread, matzoh ball soup, crisp fried chicken, cheese blintzes, and baked stuffed shrimp to its legendary desserts -- Junior's famous #1 pure cream cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, strawberry shortcake, chocolate fudge layer cake, and ice-cream sundaes -- these recipes allow you to re-create a small slice of Junior's right in your own home kitchen.
Customer Reviews:
Tasty Book.......2006-11-06
If you can't eat at Junior's this is the next best thing. The combination of recipes and history make an interesting read. The chestnut stuffing is the best I have ever had and the cheesecake is absolutely the best in the world, bar none.
Remembering Brooklyn's Best.......2006-07-22
If you grew up in Brooklyn, and can remember going "downtown" to A&S, The Fox, The Paramount, and, of course, eating at Junior's, then this book is a must! If you are too young to remember, or too far removed to understand, then the book still provides a wonderful view of what Brooklyn was at its best, and many, many wonderful recipes from Brooklyn's best restaurant.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2006-01-03
I don't live near NY, so I can just make the famous cheesecakes at home. I just tried the carrot cake and have made some of the cookies in this book and they are also excellent.
Delicious!.......2005-12-11
I've never been to Junior's in person, and I've only rarely visited Brooklyn. Yet my father grew up there, and I was raised on numerous stories of his happy memories.
WELCOME TO JUNIOR'S, a cross between a memoir and a cookbook, echoes many of my father's anecdotes about this special place, which always has been a center of energy and distinctive style.
According to census reports late in the 20th century, one in every seven Americans could trace an ancestor to Brooklyn. While this number probably now is lower due to recent immigration, there is no question but that the very idea of Brooklyn does resonate for many of us.
The social history, then, that this volume provides about the borough will confirm Brooklyn's unique place in many American hearts, from the early days of the 20th century right through the present. Reading it is like falling into an episode of the classic television comedies "Welcome Back, Kotter" or even "Happy Days."
The recipes are so good that, while reading them, it is difficult not to rush out of one's front door to head straight to Junior's. They serve great, wholesome, all-American food with a slight Yiddish accent.
This book is almost as delicious as the famous cheesecake--and I do know what I'm talking about, since I often order that cheesecake by mail.
No bad recipes for me.......2005-04-06
My title says it all. Their cheescake is wonderful. I've made it for holidays and my family is extremely picky. I love the Vienna Rolls (cut back on the salt a bit). The cornbread recipe is great if you like sweeter versions. My husband does so it's his favorite. I've never had a bad turnout from this book.
Customer Reviews:
Not detailed enough.......2005-05-31
I've had this book through 4 cats and kittens, and if you have a really healthy cat who never develops any illnesses, it's great. I find myself using the Cornell Feline Health Center online for my cats.
The diagnostic tree is just too vague, the descriptions of diseases are also too vague and there's just not enough information. Using a vet's resource center with a dictionary handy does you--and your cat--more good, especially if your cat has something really serious.
Not helpful enough.......2003-07-05
This book has a very serious omission on the subject of outdoor cats. The book does not mention at all that outdoor cats are in grave danger of attack by coyotes in many parts of the country. Coyotes are in places where many people wouldn't even expect them, such as in cities. There are precautions you can take to eliminate this danger or greatly reduce the chance of an attack. Unfortunately, this book does not list the precautions that should be taken. And by the way, bobcats will also be happy to kill a house cat and similar precautions would apply.
The only Cat Book I Have.......2000-06-08
This is a wonderful book. My wife and I have 7 cats and we received this as a gift from my in-laws. This is the only cat book we own and we look at it all the time. The book has great pictures of various cats acting out various behaviors, what a kitten should look like at a certain age, and even different parasites that a cat may get. Also included is a list of emergency situations and ways you can help your cat if he/she is injured. This is a great book no cat owner should be without.
Love This Book!.......2000-02-28
I find this book highly informative and well organized. I have 5 cats and own many cat books, but this one is by far the most referenced. I especially like the health reference section since I have not found this in any other books.
You don't need this one........2000-01-11
I expected more, and better, from the ASPCA. This book is so basic, much too elementary for anyone who already owns a cat. Really. In two years I've learned more from my cats than this book could tell me. The information level is cursory, and in some cases, spotty. It was published in 1992, so there's NOTHING here about breakthrough medications for flea and heartworm prophylaxis. The only good thing to say about this book is that the photographs are beautiful. Wish I could send it back and buy something more informative.

Almost Worthless.......2005-09-25
This book takes the buckshot approach in order to reach its audience, and more often than not, misses the mark entirely. An insubstantial blurb of a paragraph or two for each area substitutes for a wealth of information; the descriptions are so general as to be easily transposed to any other rug-producing region in the world. The book is replete with beautiful pictures of antique rugs, but contemporary rugs are conspicuous by their absence, leading me to believe that the author hails from the school that believes that new rugs do not measure up to the standards of the past; a position of simplistic ignorance. Consequently, the last century of rug weaving is entirely ignored. As is usually the case in this subject, tribal rugs figure prominently throughout the book at the expense of the more fluid, elaborately designed city rugs. The author's bias extends as far as to equip the book with larger, livelier photographs of tribal rugs. I appreciate the tribal form, but the balance of the book is upset by its emphasis on these types. The introductory chapters covering dyes and the weaving process are inadequate and insubstantial, useful only to those whose interest in the subject will not progress beyond this book.

This advice-laden book compiled by a renowned television sewing guru works equally well as a reference for answers to specific questions or as a guide to dip into at random. The well-organized hints all sent in by viewers of Sewing with Nancy are occasionally supplemented by variations or further elaboration from Nancy herself. There's so much information (most of it relevant to general sewing projects; some specialized, but potentially useful) that inveterate quick-tip collectors may find themselves reading page after chock-full page of valuable hints when they only meant to look up how to make a crisp collar or find a better way to store all those fly-away pattern pieces.

Book Description
In A Sorrowful Joy, Albert Raboteau tells the remarkable story of his own spiritual journey--a journey marked by sorrow and joy, by conversion and reconciliation. He tells of the murder of his father before he was born, being raised in a devout Roman Catholic African-American family, his education, marriage and career crises, and rebuilding his life following a conversion to Orthodox Christianity. Now a professor at Princeton, Raboteau has written a particularly American spiritual autobiography with extraordinary power, lyricism and insight that will not fail to touch anyone who picks it up. This book will appeal especially to African-American readers, members of the Orthodox faith, spiritual seekers, and lovers of biography and personal stories.
Customer Reviews:
A Joy to Read.......2005-07-19
Albert J. Raboteau is the foremost writer on the history of African American Christianity. In "A Sorrowful Joy" he writes his own history as an African American Christian. First delivered as two lectures in the Harold M. Wit Lectures at Harvard University Divinity School, Raboteau communicates his personal spiritual autobiography with power and poetry.
A phrase from the foreword by Kimberly Patton brilliantly summarizes Raboteau's life story: "None of us is only the sum of our wounds." Raboteau shares forthrightly about several wounding experiences in his life, both those he endured and those he inflicted. Providing hope, he also humbly recounts how God brought healing and forgiveness to these broken relationships.
Throughout the narrative of his journey of suffering, seeking, and spirituality, Raboteau beautifully weaves the twin narratives of African American slave religion and Orthodox Christianity. He details his surprised at the slowly evolving realization that they both emphasize the theology of the Cross. That is, African American Christianity and Orthodox Christianity both face the reality that suffering can't be avoided, while also believing the higher reality that suffering can be converted. In this one summation, Raboteau accurately captures the essence of two grand religious traditions. In one brief book, he poignantly captures the essence of an authentic spiritual journey.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Soul Physicians," and "Spiritual Friends."
Excellent on About 700 Levels from 450 Different Angles.......2003-01-02
The short version:
Mississippi African-American Catholic (and all the suffering that would entail) turns liberal revolutionary (and all the disillusionment that would entail) turns Orthodox seeker (That means satisfied fulfilled servant of the Lord). got this as a present 12-25-02, sat down and read it in it's entirety on 12-28-02. Recommend it highly for us 'children of the 60s' and spiritual seekers, touches the reader on so many different levels it is amazing. A short, quick, engaging read that packs a mighty wallop. For a WASP from the South coming to terms with many of the issues Raboteau went through, this was a marvelous book. Thanks! Raboteau's other works are superb as well.
