Book Description

Praise for Qiu Xiaolong:

"A sequel [to Death of a Red Heroine] that in many ways is even more impressive. . . . [Qiu] has moved from the poetic, exotic milieu of his first book (although plenty of elements remain) into a tougher, wider, probably more commercial and modern version of China as seen by America."-Chicago Tribune

"Another wonderful novel featuring Inspector Chen of the Shanghai Police Bureau . . . [for] Sinophiles like myself, who fantasize about taking an insider's tour of Shanghai."-Maureen Corrigan, NPR's Fresh Air

"The travelogue aspects of the novel don't overwhelm it's critical intelligence. As in all hard-boiled [mysteries], the murder and mayhem provide a cover story for a larger investigation of social mysteries."-Chicago Sun-Times

Inspector Chen's mentor in the Shanghai Police Bureau has assigned him to escort U.S. Marshal Catherine Rohn. Her mission is to bring Wen, the wife of a witness in an important criminal trial, to the United States. Inspector Rohn is already en route when Chen learns that Wen has unaccountably vanished from her village in Fujian. Or is this just what he is supposed to believe? Chen resents his role; he would rather investigate the triad killing in Shanghai's beauteous Bund Park. But his boss insists that saving face with Inspector Rohn has priority. So Chen Cao, the ambitious son of a father who imbued him with Confucian precepts, must tread warily as he tries once again to be a good cop, a good man, and also a loyal Party member.

Qiu Xiaolong, a prize-winning poet and critic in China, now teaches at Washington University in St. Louis, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

3 out of 5 stars Crime Beat Street Blog Review.......2007-09-12

I was really looking forward to the second installment in the Inspector Chen series but was quite disappointed in this book. Detective Yu, a primary character in the first novel, barely made an appearance in this one, instead too much time is devoted to the character Detective Rohn, an American working for the U.S. Marshall's office. Frankly she just isn't that interesting, she seems like a caricature of an American woman, blond, pretty, not all that smart save for an occasional comment here and there, and worst of all close minded. I didn't really get into the "what could have been" romantic suggestion the author made about her and Chen, she was too condescedning towards the Chinese, I didn't think Chen, despite his own struggles within the political system, would really find her appealing.

I also felt Qiu Xiaolong relied too heavily on plot devices he used in Death of Red Heroine, which were fabulous the first time but formulaic here. It seemed like Inspector Chen doesn't really work at all, he just ponders things until he makes a connection. That is part of detective work, but not the whole bit. Also, Chen summarizing the wrap up at the end of the novel was dull, I wanted to read about the things he discovered as he was discovering them, not later in summary. How is the reader supposed to feel like part of the story otherwise?

Despite all these criticisms there were some great moments in the book, and I hope I never have to drink snake's blood to show my gratitude to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Poetry, food, and culture.......2006-12-21

The book contains all the ingredients that make a mystery good -- a puzzling crime, dialogs between characters whose implications are left for the reader to extract, and a plausible conclusion. However it was not for these elements alone that I enjoyed the book. In fact I had picked up the volume after hearing a review for it on NPR (National Public Radio). It was reported in that review that the book depicted the going-on in current China, in particular Shanghai very well. I found the statement to be well grounded.

The fabrics of the city are of course delivered through the book's protagonist, chief inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai police bureau. He is an intelligent 30-ish man of integrity who enjoys poetry and food. Because of his interest in poetry, readers are exposed to fragments of Chinese poetry throughout (for every 5 pages or so appears a fragment). His predilection towards food brings readers to the nooks and corners of Shanghai for gourmet Chinese food and specialties. The process of solving the case reveals snapshots of the society -- how guanxi (loosely translated as relationships or connections) dominates every aspect in life, how no one is ever free from politics (Chen Cao often times withholds information even from his own boss for political considerations), how rapid economic growth is accompanied by the growth of the triads, how Mao's cultural revolution is still affecting peoples' lives, etc. Cultural differences between US and China is also highlighted through the character US Marshal Catherine Rohn, who is Chen's US counterpart in solving the illegal immigration case and serves as his love interest in this episode (another cultural aspect -- Chen gets monitored by Internal Security for his interest in Catherine).

Except for the slight slackening of pace towards the end I enjoyed the novel very much. This was my first episode in Inspector Chen series. Immediately after finishing this book I placed an order for an older episode featuring Chen.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-06

I'd heard good things about Qiu's first book, Death of a Red Heroine, but was only able to get my hands on his second book, ALCD. I picked it up eagerly, not because I like mystery fiction generally, but I am interested in the political and cultural environment of China. I was surprised to find the book a bit dull. I liked the detailed descriptions about life in china, but I found the characters not particularly interesting and the story kind of pedestrian. Moreover, I found the attraction between Chen and Rohn very grating, but that's prob because I hate romantic stuff in non-romance books. Seemed very hollywood to me. In fact, wouldn't be at all surprised if the book was made into a movie. Anyway, I would still recommend reading the book because it does paint a very interesting portrait of life in china and it's always a good thing to support authors there. If you are interested in reading more chinese authors, check out Mo Yan. Cheers.

3 out of 5 stars More case and less political atmosphere .......2005-05-28

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, Death of a Red Heroine, I jumped right into reading the sequel. This second visit with Chief Inspector Chen and his loyal deputy Yu is fun and the case even more interesting than that in the Red Heroine as it involves gangs and illegal immigration from China to the United States. But what I really liked in Red Heroine was the interesting group of characters, the descriptions of life and political atmosphere of 1990 Shanghai. Nothing in Character Dancer add to the first book in this area as it is not fresh and the group of characters are given minor rolls. New twist is that Inspector Chen must work with a United States Marshal, a woman named Catherine Rohn. This I suspect was a plot devise to give some dialog to the management of U.S. / China relations. The problem here is that the Rohn character is so underwritten she becomes more of wooden prop to hold up the narrative. And lastly, I am not a big fan of mysteries that end which several pages of the brilliant inspector explaining all that happened and perhaps why. All that said if you liked the character of Inspector Chen and a book more aimed at the case than the character I think you will get some entertainment value. I do plan to read the next book in the series and hope it returns to the roots of Red Heroine.

4 out of 5 stars Don't read this writer for the mystery alone!.......2005-01-06

Once again Qiu Xiaolong offers a fantastic mystery. What amazed me in his first novel was the cultural depth, so to speak, the feeling I had at the end of the novel that I had learned more about modern China than I would have, had I watched a documentary or assisted a one-semester course at the local university. I had the same sensation this time, even though some of the minor details were already known. Inspector Chen is a very believable character caught like so many of us between a profession [police officer] and an avocation [poet] which at first appear mutually exclusive. The true revelation comes when we discover how his knowledge of poetry helps him in his investigations. This characteristic of his, the love of poetry, also makes Chen - at least to my eyes -- more Chinese, for crafty, more sensitive than many men and certainly than most detectives, reminescent only of Inspector Morse, in his beloved Cambridge.

I agree with the previous reviewer than some of the more literary passages, tangential subjects, and cultural observations appear to have been shaved off in this second book, probably through the hands of some know-it-all editor who believes that a thick book with plenty of literary allusions might bore or be too much of a challenge to the ninth-grade level reading he imagines his readers to possess.

But in the end, the cuts, if there were some, did not take away from the overall charm of the book, of Inspector Chen and of China.

I intend to read his next book and I strongly recommend the reading of this one; both for the mystery as well as for the information on a changing China.

Book Description

Hailed internationally for his unique ability to shape historical facts into tales of extraordinary depth and probing insight, Per Olov Enquist has long been regarded as one of the world's foremost authors of literary fiction. In The Book about Blanche and Marie, Enquist has once again found inspiration from the historical record, this time exploring the fascinatingly complex relationship between two of the twentieth centuryÂ's most remarkable women: Blanche Wittman, the famous hysteria patient of Professor J.M. Charcot at Salpêtriére Hospital outside Paris, and Marie Curie, the Polish physicist and Nobel Prize winner. While the scientist tries to understand the nature of radiation, Blanche, her assistant and, at the time of her death, a triple amputee as a result of exposure to radiation, fills three notebooks with her exploration of a deceptively simple question: What is love? The Book about Blanche and Marie is at once a haunting look at scientific martyrdom and an intimate and moving portrait of a friendship between two uniquely brave and talented women.

5 out of 5 stars sad and beautiful, like love.......2006-12-11

This book helped me understand love and human nature. The repetitive style of the prose mirrored the nature of repetetive, obsessive thoughts such as those centered on love or scientific pursuits. Ultimately it left me feeling unsatisfied and still yearning to understand, which I think is the whole point. A beautiful novel.

3 out of 5 stars (3.5) "Radium, death, art and love.".......2006-04-22

In Enquist's distillation of the notebooks of Blanche Wittman, two women are adrift on the sea of the Enlightenment: Blanche, the "hysterical" darling of the scientific community and Marie Curie, the Polish physicist and eventual Nobel Prize winner. Wittman's "The Book of Questions", consists of three journals, the yellow, the black and the red, in which she questions the nature of love as it relates to the physical world. Wittman, the famous patient of Professor JM Charcot at Saltpetriere Hospital in the last decade of the nineteenth century, enjoys the attentions of the medical community as they seek to discover the true nature of that curious creature, Woman. Later Wittman spends hours assisting Marie Curie with her research, both of them handling the amazing new curative element, radiation, that will cost Blanch all of her limbs but one and finally her life. Radiation is, for a time, considered a miracle, to the detriment of those who eventually perish from leukemia and other such disorders. Radioactive health spas enjoy inordinate popularity; there is even "Curie Hair Water" for the prevention of hair loss, but by 1925 the tide has begun to turn.

Picture Blanche at the end, ensconced in her wooden box, reduced to a torso with only a right arm and hand to pen her thoughts, forever ruminating on the nature of woman and love, radiation the fusion of all, the instrument of her death. Visualize the two unusual women, the men in their lives adding complications and unhappiness, relationships distorted by ill-fated choices, romance the fuel of each pursuit. Searching for cache in a man's world, Blanche is an item of interest, the subject of hysterical experiments at the hands of her physician, Charcot, who becomes her lover, Curie the inquisitive scientist who will be there until the end. Think of Blanche and Marie, heads bent over their scientific experiments, the poisonous element that spells the demise of Blanche's extraordinary beauty and deforms Curie's right hand, the two basking in an island of friendship and mutual admiration while hovering over luminescent death.

Often-confusing in point of view, the novel rings of documentation rather than fiction, yet retains its lyrical beauty throughout, Blanche's impulsive ramblings marking her as yet another victim of the Enlightenment. The true irony is that the scientific community is so easily enchanted by radical scientific explanations without data, an impulsive merging of hubris and information, the birth of theories that will later prove not only to be erroneous, but deadly. Unfortunately the text never quite escapes the ambiance of a disjointed memoir, rambling and inconsistent, a time warp of Blanche's fevered observations, which may or may not include her complicity in Charcot's death and her obsession with imagination at the cost of reason. Familiar names appear: Jane Avril, Mesmer, Sigmund Freud, a culture on the brink of scientific discovery, spiritualism and the shimmering radiation that so enthralls, the plot as ephemeral as the elements. This novel is unique, disturbing and a timely reminder of man's penchant for folly. Luan Gaines/ 2006.

Book Description

Stop the Hurting

Mary Pipher's bestselling Reviving Ophelia triggered widespread interest in the culture of preteen and teenage girls and the seeming epidemic of relational aggression (bullying) among them. Gossip, teasing, forming cliques, and other cruel behaviors are the basis of this bullying, which harms both victim and aggressor. Until now, no one has been able to offer practical and effective solutions that stop girls from hurting each other with words and actions. But in Girl Wars, two experts explain not only how to prevent such behavior but also how to intervene should it happen, as well as overcome the culture that breeds it.

Illustrated by compelling true stories from mothers and girls, the authors offer effective, easy-to-implement strategies that range from preventive to prescriptive, such as how to

With their combined experience in offering and evaluating programs that combat bullying, the authors show that girls not only want to help rather than hurt each other, they can do so with guidance from concerned adults.

This book is fabulous - just what I was looking for!! Every adult who works with young girls should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Advice for Dads.......2004-01-01

As the dad of a teen girl who has gone through a lot of bullying I was nodding my head at the stories. Then I got to the chapter on Dads and Daughters and thought "At last!" This is the first concrete advice I've found on how to help my daughter. It's great to recognize that fathers play an important role too. One of my daughter's teachers read this, and is going to start a program at her school to stop relational aggression, so even more girls will benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring!.......2004-01-01

This book on female bullying is an absolutely wonderful. "Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can break your heart." That's what female bullying would hurt girls deeply. This book is worth reading and there are some great take-home points. I really enjoyed the book and found it helpful. Only if I read it earlier!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-12-03

I picked this up after reading Rachel Simmons' "Odd Girl Out" (which was outstanding) and wanting to know how I could take action against social aggression as a teacher. This book did not supply the answers. First, it's aimed primarily at parents, with hardly any direct recommendations to teachers (in fact, it almost takes the view that teachers are not likely to be effective allies in the battle against social aggression). Second, it espouses a number of strategies that strike me as naive and counterproductive. In her book, Simmons took a much savvier tack, identifying approaches that are likely to convince picked-on kids that YOU JUST DON'T GET IT AT ALL. Dellasega and Nixon seem to me to overemphasize church communities as a retreat from aggression -- this strikes me as not only naive but dangerous, since so many social aggressors cloak their meanness behind a façade of impeccable niceness, and what better way to prove how nice you are than to belong to a church group? They also endorse an activity called "the PowHer Game," which sounded to me about as bright an idea as a Jumping to Conclusions Mat; to confirm my hunch, I ran it past my sister (whose own junior-high experiences prompted her interest in "Odd Girl Out" and, by extension, mine), and she said, yep, any kid would think that was hokey beyond belief, and not one would put an ounce of trust in it.

Somewhere, either in print or in someone's mind, there is a book that can help parents, teachers and kids resist social aggression effectively. I don't think this one is it.

I have used many of the recipes in this cookbook. They are delicious and not terribly difficult. This book is great for cooks with day jobs.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous cookbook for the cooking challenged!.......2005-12-16

I just LOVE this cookbook. I spent about an hour at a local bookstore browsing, looking for the right cookbook that would contain family-friendly menus and that one would utilize ingredients that you probably have on hand, that were quick and easy and delicious. Many cookbooks required very specialized gourmet items or would take just too darn long. I tried one of the chocolate cake recipes (Chocolate cavity maker cake) and it was so easy and out of this world! My 10 year old's favorite recipe is the lemon scampi chicken.

These recipes are written by actual people who may not be professional cooks, but I don't have time to be Julia Child on a Monday night when I'm trying to get my kids out to baseball practice, Boy Scouts, etc! The "Cavity Maker" recipe uses a regular cake mix as a base, which cuts down on a lot of time and effort, but still delivered that homemade bakery taste.

Many of the recipes aren't necessarily low fat or heart-healthy, but you can make adjustments. For example, I usually cut the amount of butter a recipe requires, using light butter or less olive oil, substituting light sour cream for regular...just use common sense.

I'm buying this for my mother in law!

4 out of 5 stars Good Source if you need to cook.......2004-05-20

I have a very hard time evaluating this book objectively, as it represents the kind of Middle American cooking I try to avoid. Its style of cooking reminds me of the famous comparison of Elvis to the Beatles as being like Campbell's soup to an Andy Wharhol silk screen of Campbell's soup. The one is utilitarian, the other is making art out of something utilitarian. This is not a criticism of Elvis or Campbell's soup or even of these recipes. It is simply a characterization that is meant to bring out its role in the world of recipes in a concise and illuminating way.

The book is a collection of recipes reprinted from the allrecipes.com web site that touts itself as the world's number one cooking site. As this is a review of the book and not the web site, I will not dwell on this claim except to point out that this means the book which may serve as a close parallel to this volume is the Food Network cookbook published about 9 months ago.

To begin my evaluation, I read all of the twenty (20) recipes listed in the `Recipe Hall of Fame' and I found all of the reasons I avoid this genre of recipe writing in my own cooking. The primary reasons I look elsewhere for recipes is:

Heavy use of packaged products such as soups, gravy mixes, cake mixes, and spice mixes.
References to packaged preparations are generic. No preferred brands or characterizations are cited.
Vague instructions. Interesting and important details such as best potato type to use are often left out.

Wrong instructions, such as directions to frequently move sautéed meats before achieving a good sear.
Where I know of a similar recipe published elsewhere, alternate recipe is always superior.
Recipes tend to be high on empty calories relative to culinary value delivered.
Ironically, the packaged products and the unsophisticated methods lead to results that are not simple on the mouth. By simple, I mean what Richard Olney means by simple. Characteristics of the basic ingredients are enhanced rather than obscured by the recipe.

These are all my own reactions to this style of recipe. I should clearly say that if one cooks often, but has no patience with browsing a large number of cookbooks, this book may offer an important source of inspiration. The book may be especially welcome if you are a devotee of the allrecipe.com web site.

In comparing this book to the Food Network cookbook, it is clear that the two are in a completely different class. The allrecipe.com authors are all amateur home cooks and the Food Network authors are all professional cooks. The Food Network offerings have been tested in a professional kitchen and they have been offered to other food professionals. This does mean the Food Network recipes are, on average, more difficult and more time consuming to realize, but the results are a lot closer to the art of Andy Wharhol than they are to something which has come out of a can from New Jersey.

This book is a great outlet for creative amateur home chefs. Their efforts are not unlike what I do as an amateur writer churning out reviews for free on Amazon.com because it provides the fun without the agony of locating a professional venue in a magazine, newspaper, or even a culinary web site.

My best suggestion to the fine people who search out books of this type are to consider some professionally written sources which may fit their culinary objectives. If you are in need of fast cooking, check out Rachael Ray's books. If you need diversity with an international cachet, try Patricia Wells' books on Provencal cooking. If you need variety and general guidance, try James Beard's American Cookery, Mark Bittman's `How to Cook Everything', or `The Joy of Cooking'. If you like these books because you contribute to allrecipes.com, then I say all the more power to you.

Average, easy, tasty recipes for the person who needs to cook.

Our family was looking into the breed to research if Boxers were for us. This book was helpful and the information was clear. I also ordered Boxers - A complete Pet Owner's Manual by BARRONS. When both arrived together in the mail I was more inclined to pick up the book by Barrons first. The photos were more inticing and the layout and text was less inhibiting. I found myself picking up the book by Richard Tomita after I completed Barrons book. I would have to say I gathered information from both. If I could only select one - I would select Barrons.

2 out of 5 stars Too English For Me!.......2007-02-11

There may be great advice in this book but I found the projects redundant and besides, there were so many English "catch" words that half the time I didn't know what she was saying!

"Homeless Man Turns Life into a Movement." --Chicago Reporter

"an eloquent voice for Americans too often ignored or scapegoated." --Booklist

"Casanova and Blackburn have created an eloquent statement from the trenches of a movement that is still only about a decade old. As more and more people understand the limitations of charity and the necessity of organizing, people like Casanova, who have paved the way for others, will no doubt be regarded as the Malcolms and Martins and Rosas of a new movement." --Real Change
