Book Description
The New York Times bestselling master of ticking-bomb suspense.
Eight vulnerable girls and their helpless teachers are forced off a school bus and held hostage. The madman who has them at gunpoint has a simple plan: one hostage an hour will die unless the demands are met. Called to the scene is Arthur Potter, the FBI's best hostage negotiator. He has a plan. But so does one of the hostages-a beautiful teacher who's willing to do anything to save the lives of her students. Now, the clock is ticking as a chilling game of cat and mouse begins.

"On a lonely highway in Kansas, eight young deaf girls and their teachers are taken hostage by three escaped killers. Pitted against them is the FBI's chief negotiator, a veteran of hundreds of such encounters. But somehow, he feels, this one may be different...
Customer Reviews:
I almost envy those of you who've not read this...for the treat you've got to come.......2007-06-02
A hostage situation, set in an old slaughterhouse that is dark and sinister and smells of death. Bad enough already! But to have the hostages deaf children and their teachers was genius as the whole communication aspect is turned on it's head.
I found the characters compelling, even the bad guys!
Having finished it, I feel I have far more understanding of the complexities of a hostage situation and far more insight into the experiences of the deaf.
A thriller that stands out!
A really good book.......2007-05-03
This Book is one of my favorite books I have ever read. I raed this book in two days and I am not a person who reads a lot but this book is so good in my opinion, I gave it to some of my friends and they all read it just as fast as I did if not faster. This book is filled with suspence, action, turns and twist and the plot is really well written. I also really enjoyed the story line it was very intriguing.
One of the best.......2007-03-11
Jeffrey Deaver never ceases to satisfy. As usual I couldn't put it down.
Excellent thriller!.......2007-02-07
This has to be one of the best thrillers i have read; I finished reading it within 24 hours and then couldn't stop thinking about the characters. Even though I didn't find the 'love story' between Arthur Potter and Melanie to be at all credible this didn't spoil the story for me. Highly recommended if you're looking for a good page-turner that makes you think.
No page turner but pretty good........2006-04-03
This was the first Jeffrey Deaver book I read so far and it is only the third book he wrote. I was sceptical if it is worth reading because the plot of a hostage taking did not seem do be really thrilling. It was a pleasant surprise that the book is well written, fast paced with good characters and is not boring at all.
It also had some good twists in between and a surprising ending.
On the other hand it did not really keep me glued to my chair reading for hours.
Also what I did not like was the "love affair" between FBI agent Arthur Potter and the deaf teacher Melanie Charrol since it was not believable, it did not make sense nor contribute anything vital to the story in my opinion.
I wonder how more recent Deaver books are which feature his "normal" main character Lincoln Rhyme. They are said to be very good so I might try one of them in the near future...

Its too bad.......2007-05-04
First things first, I absolutely love the book "A Maidens Grave" by Jeff Deaver, its one of the most brutally emotional books i have ever read. The story is about bus full of deaf girls and thier teacher taken hostage by convicts and the hostage negotiater who rescues them. I dont know who Conner O Brian is, but he cannot read a book outloud to save his life. It was excrutiating trying to get past his whiney voice, monotone, and he has absolulely no skill for acting, which is needed to convey this book to the listener. It was so dissapointing, This book deserved better than him.

Book Description
"The quantum leap beyond positive thinking, Optimal Thinking offers a whole new way of looking at life, business, and relationships. This prescriptive self-improvement book is filled with superlative information for every type of reader."
Customer Reviews:
Classic guide to optimize personal and business success.......2007-08-15
Optimal Thinking is the mental tool to maximize thoughts, strategies, execution, and success. This book differentiates suboptimal thinking from Optimal Thinking and shows you how to use this peak form of thinking in a consistent manner. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to make the most of their life by making the most of their thinking. In addition, I recommend Optimal thinking as the foundation for optimizing personal and business relationships and any corporate culture. And finally, I recommend Optimal Thinking: 100-Day Audio-CD Program for Permanent Results to make optimal thinking second nature.
I have no idea why this is so highly rated..........2007-07-29
It is full of jargon that gets in the way of the ideas the author was trying to articulate. There are way better self help books out there. I recommend "Fight Your Fear and Win" and Don Aslett's decluttering book amongst others. Don't waste your money on this one.
Suboptimal Book.......2007-06-11
This book opens with a questionnaire. Questionnaires are a valid tool in the social sciences, if used properly, and I happily wrote my answers down.
The questionnaire is followed by Chapter One, which asks, "Do you enjoy the best life has to offer . . .?" I further learned that this book "is for all who want to be their best and enjoy the best in life."
Although it was never explicitly stated, I quickly learned that this fuzzy concept of Optimal Thinking means using certain words: best, most, smartest, greatest, highest, outstanding, extraordinary, ultimate, perfect, etc., as well as optimize and maximize. Glickman never explicitly defines these concepts but she does contrast them sharply with mediocrity. Mediocre persons accept suboptimal, submaximal, and less-than-best situations. She teaches us to always ask ourselves what the best is and to go for it.
I tried working with Glickman. I really did. I assiduously created a notebook and wrote answers to all her questions and exercises. But by page 46, the end of Chapter Two, I threw in the towel. She had trained me to ask myself what the best use of my time was and plowing through this book was truly not it. This book is a hodge-podge of self-help truisms--a desultory series of exhortations to be our best.
I am writing this review not to damn Glickman, who no doubt is a well-meaning person genuinely wishing to help others, but to let Amazon customers know that there is a better alternative to this book. Read _The Feeling Good Handbook_, by David D. Burns. I first read it about three years ago, not expecting much from a work with such a sappy title. This book truly changed me. It changed me a lot. And for the better.
Burns's book has serious research behind it demonstrating that the methods it recommends have helped many, many people. The problem with Burns's book is that it takes a serious investment of time by the reader. It only works if you work. By work, I mean doing all the written exercises. I did them and I was glad I did. By doing those exercises I became a happier, more efficient person, better able to accomplish my goals.
One nugget that I have gleaned from Burns and others (_The Now Habit_, by Neil Fiore) is that demands for perfectionism are often self-defeating. As Voltaire once said, "the perfect is the enemy of the good." If you set yourself up to be satisfied only with the best, the highest, the ultimate, the perfect, you will certainly spend most of your life dissatisfied. That might be OK. You might decide that finding the perfect solution to global warming is more important than your own personal satisfaction. But I don't believe that you are more likely to find that solution if you are a perfectionist. I think you are more likely to find that solution if you are able to celebrate your successes and build on them. Be happy with the good and strive to make it better.
I believe that perfectionism is a trait that holds many people back from being their potential. I see Glickman's book as doing nothing to cure people of their perfectionist flaws.
It was because Burns's book was so good that I have been on the lookout for other books equally as good. That is why I purchased Optimal Thinking. The best thing you can do is not read _Optimal Thinking_ by Rosalene Glickman.
Loved it!.......2007-05-29
I absolutely loved reading this book. It gives you amazing insights and a fresh perspective of how to, in a nutshell, optimize yourself. I found it particularly patient in showing the difference between suboptimal (mediocre) thinking and optimal (extraordinary) thinking and how its a simple shift in the mental attitude from which you operate. This conscious yet simple shift in mental attitude can make a world of difference, and enable you to strive for the very best, by becoming your very best. Your life becomes what it is, by the quality of your thoughts and thought patterns; optimize that and you can achieve everything you set your mind to. It teaches you how to be practical, realistic, proactive and how to ask yourself the right questions, to get the best outcome in every circumstance. It's simple - If you're ready to be the best you can be; get this book and it will help you tremendously.
Changed my life.......2007-03-28
This is a great book which has changed my life. It has all the tools needed to become powerful and productive in every area of your life. The 100 day program on audio is amazing as well. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
What is "fusion cooking"? It's brushing skewers of beef tenderloin with a traditional Caribbean jerk barbecue sauce; matching spicy Southwest fried chicken with a sunny ginger-apricot sauce; or drizzling watermelon and sweet red onion salad with a raspberry cabernet vinaigrette. In short, fusion cooking means combining ingredients and techniques from around the world to achieve exciting flavors.
Fusion Food Cookbook celebrates the new American cuisine, in which distinctive seasonings and cooking styles from Asia, Mexico, the American Southwest, New Orleans, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean are incorporated into familiar home cooking. Highlighting the vivid flavors of these diverse ethnic and regional traditions, authors Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison define a major trend in American cooking, showing us how to mix and match seasonings and cooking techniques and encouraging us to be more creative in our own cooking.
The 150 flavor-intense recipes in Fusion Food Cookbook require no hard-to-find ingredients or special equipment. More than 100 color photographs by acclaimed food and wine photographer Teri Sandison capture the vivid colors and cross-cultural style of the inspired recipes.
Customer Reviews:
YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!.......2005-02-21
If you are serious about cooking, and you want the fusion approach, this is THE book to guarantee delicious results. It is easy to follow, and even when you make a small mistake (as I did by using the marinade as the finishing sauce) the results are fabulous. Many say the ingredients are many, and if you don't live by an asian market, impossible to find, and costly: I say baloney (the best Chinese kind!) because I was just in a very small town in Southern Utah, and there was an asian market there! Sources are also available online, so no excuses. In addition, I made a 20 course dinner using these recipes and there was a large amount of prep work. But the actual cooking time was not bad. People were eating each course as I cooked it and the final cost was well below what we would have paid to feed everyone at a chain chinese restaurant. High leads you through step by step and points out the all important 'why' a certain recipe is prepared in a particular way. It's almost as good as having him right there or being in one of his classes. Unless you must cook from mixes, this is a definite plus in any serious cook's repetoire.
500 Stars for this one.......2004-10-23
This book is absolutely fantastic! As other reviewers have noted all the recipes that I have tried are absolutely excellent. I am recently returning to gourmet cooking - as my creative muse has taken me in the direction of computers graphics and animation these last 3 years - and this is the first book I reached for. Last night I made Jade Sauce and Secret Asian BBQ Sauce, and they are assuredly the best things that I have tasted in 3 years!
One reviewer is right - I am lucky to live in an urban area with a large Vietnamese population. I therefore have easy access to Vietnamese grocery stores that carry all the "weird" ingredients. And they carry them for cheap - like a half to a quarter of what the same items would cost in a grocery store (if you found them there at all). Like a quart of sesame oil for $10, 5 pounds of Hoisin Sauce for $5, or a quart of Soy Sauce for $4. And some recipes do include a lot of ingredients - the bbq sauce has 18! If you do have access to an Asian market, the price of these recipes plummet into the everyday cooking budget area. Way cool.
Also seriously cool is the fact that a lot of the recipes revolve around a flavoring sauce that can be made ahead of time (some, like the bbq sauce keep forever in the refrigerator). This makes the actual dinner preparation very simple in some cases.
Overall, this is the best cook book I own - which is way too many! If you want to try something different: BUY THIS BOOK!
Good for Special Occasions.......2002-02-17
This book is comprehensive. It covers so much that I still have not been able to get through a quarter of the recipes even though I've owned this book for about 3 years! The recipes found in this book are enticing because not only are the photographs beautiful but the quirky combination of ingredients is hard to imagine. The few recipes I've tried have been really good but I have one major problem with this book. The ingredients used are not items that you can find in any supermarket. One would have to go to a specialty gourmet store or asian market. So, in order to prepare a meal from this book, you have to go out and buy a whole bunch of ingredients (and believe me the ingredient lists are long!). This is a handy book if you want to prepare something different for guests or for your family on a special occasion but not worth all of the time, money, and effort you would have to put in for an everyday meal.
this is one of the best.......2001-12-30
i did not do 1/10th of the recipes here but i can tell you one thing...my cooking changed dramatically for a while.
i loved the small touches, the photography, the willingness to push the readers a bit further.
a must for wanna-be chefs who want to try out something new.
Fusion Food Cookbook.......2001-09-21
Every recipe that we have tried in the book has been outstanding. The recommended combinations are excellent and always compliment each other very well. It is really easy to prepare a fantastic gourmet meal for dinner parties. This is one of the very best cookbooks we have every owned and we recommend it to all of our friends.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-06-27
Have been pleased with the quality and content of information; good resource guide for new Quaker parrot owners.
Good -- but not for experienced bird owner........2007-03-23
If you are researching the Quaker, as a previous bird owner, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are a first time bird owner, I would give it 5 stars. I would have preferred more specific species information. Thank you.
great seller.......2006-03-21
i ordered this book and received it long before i even expected. the book is in like - new condition. i recommend this seller to anyone who wants quick service and you get exactly what they are advertising.
Cute Pictures!.......2006-03-19
Great pictures, makes you want to run right out and purchase your parrot! Very informative also. I enjoyed it.
Simple but clear with all the essential info.......2002-04-13
If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...
Book Description
For many years collectors and dealers alike tended to overlook dolls made of cloth in favor of their china and bisque contemporaries. Fortunately, this situation has changed dramatically in recent years. This book covers the story of cloth dolls from their ancient ancestors through to present day examples. This one easy-to-use volume with over 500 illustrations provides the most comprehensive study guide for this area in doll collecting available today. A value range is also included with each caption for easy reference.
Customer Reviews:
This is a fascinating compendium of cloth dolls........1998-07-22
No matter if your interest is in the history of dolls or in collecting, this is the book for you! The photographs are very good and the text is thorough and interesting. The early primitive (and not so primitive) dolls show the reader the type of dolls made in colonial times. The later cottage industry types show early innovation. Even contemporary art dolls are covered. I have read and reread this book a number of times and it has a permanent place on my bedside table. If you love cloth dolls, you must buy this book!

Book Description
Meant to be used as a tool for slowing down and eating together as a family, this thoughtful gift set includes the Miniature Edition Home: A Little Book of Comforts, plus a pack of 54 laminated cards, each bearing a profound sentiment from a particular culture or belief system. The popular miniature book is a trove of homespun wisdom about the special comforts of home.
