Book Description
While Lord Peter is abroad on a secret mission, Harriet Vane, now Lady Peter Wimsey, takes their children to safety in the country. But there's no escape from war: rumors of spies abound, glamorous RAF pilots and flirtatious land-girls scandalize the villagers, and the blackout makes rural lanes as sinister as London's alleys. And when a practice air-raid ends with a young woman's death, it's almost a shock to hear that the cause is not enemy action, but murder. Or is it? With Peter away, Harriet sets out to find out whodunit...and the chilling reason why.

An enjoyable visit with old friends........2006-12-04
Those who love Dorothy Sayers should enjoy this book. Jill Paton Walsh is a good steward of Sayer's legacy, and the further adventures of Peter, Harriet, and Bunter are as satisfying as anyone has a right to expect.
I sincerely hope a third Wimsey book will follow soon.
Better than "Thrones Dominations".......2006-11-18
Jill Patton Walsh once again adds to Agatha Christi's Lord Peter Whimsey/Harriet Vane series. She has done a better job on this book. If you have read "Busmans Honeymoon" you will meet a lot of familar characters.
This story is set in the beginning of WWII, and Harriet has retreated to Talboys, the house where Peter and Harriet spent thier honeymoon. Ms. Walsh not only does a good job of expanding on the village residents introduced in "Busmans Honeymoon" she captures Ms Christi's style a lot better than in "Thrones, Dominations". She also does a good job of capturing the feeling of England at this very difficult time.
Lord Peter does not appear until almost half way through, but Harriet keeps you attention until then.
Despite what could be a very heavy setting, this story is lighted hearted where it is not inapprioate.
Well worth buying. I hope Jill Patton Walsh does another story soon.
Seems like a Sayer's collaboration.......2006-05-15
This book takes place mainly in a small village in the countryside of England. The time, Wartime England, covering the end of 1939 through early 1940. While the village has its first air-raid practice, a crime is committed. They return to the streets to find a young lady murdered.
Lord Peter Wimbsy is off on a Secret Mission for his country. Leaving the short-handed police to turn to his wife for assistance, Writer and amateur detective Lady Peter Wimsey, known before her marriage as Harriet Vane.
We follow Harriet as she tries to solve this mystery. The story is well woven and just when we figure out who did it, we are thrown a curious twist. The cast of characters in the village makes for a fun read. We are also given a good look at life in England during the early part of World War II.

Another View of Some Old Friends.......2006-03-17
I'm glad to read, in these reviews, that not every reader was so scrupulous about comparing Sayers and Paton/Walsh. I was so delighted to be returned to the locale and the characters, it didn't bother me at all that Paton/Walsh's style was different. It was as though another friend of the characters, writing about them in her own way, gave us the opportunity to visit with them once again.

Mediocre mythic study of Tolkien.......2003-12-21
Juggles large numbers of mythic references with some skill but not full confidence or accuracy, and doesn't really have a lot of insight. The book is also burdened with a Hildebrandt cover. I recommend David Colbert's "The Magical Worlds of The Lord of the Ring" for juvenile readers, or Anne C. Petty's "Tolkien in the Land of Heroes" for adults.
A must read for fans.......2002-12-12
I just finished reading this wonderful book about the Northern European myths that Tolkien borrowed and reshaped to make the lands, people, and languages of Middle-earth come alive. For the price and content, this is a great value. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Tolkien's fiction!"

"As a long-term fan of JRR Tolkien and all things Middle-earth, I was very happy to pick up this concise and readable book tracing the main mythic sources that inspired Tolkien. Most books focus on the Norse and Germanic myths to the exclusion of all else, and while Dr. Jones covers these areas, she also goes well beyond to look at the Celtic myths of Ireland and Wales to complete the picture. Put this on your holiday shopping list if you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings!"

Attention All Health/Fitness professionals.......2007-08-31
A book that you should not be without. Great reference, wonderful information; everyone needs this.
best book.......2007-06-27
one of the best reference and self help books for the improvement of overall health and wellbeing ... go dr chek and all his practicioners.
eye opening.......2007-04-18
This book will be almost impossible for the majority of society to swallow but if you are open to changing your lifestyle and want to be a healthy person, these methods will work. I do not feel that an all organic diet is possible for a lot of people or even necessary. But the quality of food we eat is very important and I think he sets the stage to prove to everyone how important our diet is in our well-being. If you can follow this book and take half of it to heart, it will add quality years to your life.
Beautiful Book.......2007-03-09
This book is really well written. It is easy to understand and very helpful. We learn things that we didn't ever think about before. It does not only give you information about nutrition and good health but also shows you how to use this information. I really liked it. It is also used in my nutrition class in college. Wonderful!
Great format, great guide to health living.......2007-02-11
This book has very good structure and serves as a great guide to a healthy lifestyle. I've been doing the exercises outlined in the book along with guidance from a Chek practicioner in my area. It's a different way to the traditional exercise programs of which most of us are accustomed. He gives interesting guidelines to healthy eating and lifestyle habits and has a large following, probably for good reason. My only criticism would be that while the author presents these concepts in a very usable manner, it is a bit void of true scientific backing for his claims. But, overall, it's a book well worth reading for anyone interested in living a healthy lifestyle.

An Okay Book.......2007-09-22
I didn't get the type of information I was looking for in this book, but I will not say that others won't. You will learn something if you are a novice to candy making.
Great Book .......2006-08-08
This book gives easy to read details and I love the colorful pictures.
Good Book. (But I have no talent).......2005-11-22
Nothing I have tried to do has worked out. However, it isn't the books. fault. Nice material presented in a very good way. It just helps if you have a little talent.
Not really candy.......2005-04-06
I wasn't impressed with this book and here is why. The layout was boring, the directions were scanty; offered in the front of the book only. There wasn't much of an introduction at all and there was no ending. The recipes offered covered fudge, toffee, cereal snacks, but most of these were variations of one common recipe: ex- basic chocolate fudge, then choc-mint fudge, cho-coffee fudge..this sort of thing. The maple fudge recipe has no maple in it. Some of the recipes were not even what I would classify as candy since they were made from cooking corn syrup and cereal together. There was way too much emphasis on using sweetened condensed milk, confectioners sugar, and chocolate coatings. The title was inaccurate. It should of been called "quick and easy sweets". There is not much about real candy making methods in this book at all.
I gave this book 2 stars because the photos were good (the identification charts were not) and for the occasional recipe that beckoned. I don't recommend.
Color Pictures Make This Book a Stand-Out.......2002-12-16
This book is a very simple and straightforward introduction to the basics of making homemade candy. It does not provide in-depth instructions, HOWEVER, there are many many color pictures which I found very helpful as a beginning candy maker. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes are not too complex. There is a little bit of everything in here and you really can't go wrong for the price.

Book Description
Written for collectors and the general public alike, this full-color catalogue highlights 121 important tureens and related items from the outstanding collection given to Winterthur by the Campbell Museum in 1996. Comprising both metal and ceramic tureens, as well as ladles, soup plates, bowls, and spoons, the collection illustrates the broader history of dining practices, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, when many items were commissioned by royal and aristocratic patrons for use in elaborate dining ceremonies.
New research by the authors adds considerably to the body of knowledge about makers, fabrication, and provenance -- subjects addressed in each entry. An appendix describes the XRF analysis carried out on metalwork items in the collection and interprets data derived from the analysis. A glossary and extensive bibliography provide further explanation and resources.

Chic, classic knits from the original Vogue Pattern Books of the 1930s–1960s return in an enchanting, illustrated, one-of-a-kind collection with more than 40 fabulous garments for the entire family. Among the perennial fashion winners: a short-sleeved silk top; cabled V-neck; girl’s heart twinset; and boy’s striped turtleneck. An introduction covers all the basics.
Customer Reviews:
Book title is misleading.......2004-06-01
Based on the title, Classic Knits from the 1930s-1960s, I was expecting more traditional patterns with classic lines. The book should be titled, "Mostly '60s" or something like that. I was only able to judge this book by the photo on the cover (ha! remember the old saying), so I thought I would be getting lots of classic, un-trendy patterns. Instead, most of the women's patterns are exaggerated 1960s wonders. However, the men's patterns are classic and might be worth your while. If you have subscribed to Vogue Knitting magazine over the past 15 years, you will already have most of the patterns. Silly me, I thought the editor of this book would have had the imagination to publish other patterns from the original Vogue Knitting instead of being lazy.
Not a lot of stylish patterns.......2003-02-18
If you really want a great book on stylish vintage knits, I'd suggest you buy Sarah Dallas' Vintage Knits. The patterns there were more form fitting. The patterns in the Vogue book were a little uninspiring -- they were patterns that you could pretty much find elsewhere. But it's an okay book for beginners and intermediate knitters.
Good book, but I would rather check antique book stores.......2002-06-03
I bought this book because I liked "Very Easy Knit" , so I kind of expected the similar effectiveness. However, to me, it was not as good as "Very Easy Knit". The book seems to loose its focus, since it attempts to cover too board catagory; babies, men, teeneger. It may be good for somebody who has a family to knit, but if you are big fan of vintage knitting patterns, I do not think this book offers variety. The patterns themselves are good, a good book. But, still I would rather check local antique book stores for old Vougue's originals from this era. ( it has much more patterns in one volume, just much more !)
Good, With One Little Caveat.......2002-01-18
I really like this book, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, surprisingly, several of the patterns can actually be found in other Vogue books (e.g., the silk lined shawl, men's cashmere gloves). The repeat was a bit disconcerting, and I would have rather seen something else, since I have almost the complete Vogue Knitting library.
However, the book has many, many excellent points, which make it a worthwhile purchase, even if you've seen a few of the patterns before. First, Vintage Collection is designed very well, with all of VKs usual features and inspiring photographs. Patterns are grouped by type: women, men, kids, and scarves/shawls. Unlike VK's Vintage Knits On the Go, the Collection contains patterns that truly speak for their era and will lend a vintage touch to everyone's wardrobe.
The variety of designs is astounding, including a coat, an aran sweater, the gorgeous cashmere cabled sweater on the cover, sweet baby things, as well as a silk lined shawl... and many, many more.

Book Description
"A superb chronicle of a unique period in the development of printmaking in the U.S. in the post World War II years. This excellent history of a gifted group of artist-professors who through their creative and innovative approach to the teaching of printmaking helped to initiate a renaissance in printmaking that has become a singular addition to twentieth century American artistic expression."-Clare Romano, Pratt Institute, and John Ross, Manhantanville College
From naming the first-ever artist-in-residence, John Steuart Curry, to fostering the internationally renowned Tandem Press today, the University of Wisconsin- Madison art faculty has been an innovator. The breakthrough aesthetics and technical innovations of its printmaking program have led the way, and the "Madison Mafia" has spread the word to the art world for half a century.
Something significant happened in the printmaking field on campuses across the country following World War II, as the interest in this art form exploded and the emphasis shifted from teacher education to teaching studio arts. But the confluence of individuals and events at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is unique, establishing and maintaining the UW as a major printmaking center and a formative influence on fine art prints in America for more than fifty years.
This book tells this story beautifully in words and pictures. The words: interviews with and about those who taught and were taught, from founding father Alfred Sessler to former student Bruce Nauman. The pictures-the prints-speak for themselves.

2 little girls in the Selma civil rights movement.......1999-01-29
A moving as-told-to account of the experiences of 2 brave little girls in the days of the Selma civil rights movement. As adult women, they recall their involvement as children in the stirring church meetings and the marches, their relationship with Martin Luther King Jr., and themurders of 2 white Northern clergyman. Stirring, inspirational, deeply moving.
