Book Description

When the body of famous screen actress Christine Clay is found on a beach on the southern coast of England, Inspector Alan Grant is faced with too many clues and too many motives. It seems the world is full of people who wanted Christine Clay dead.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2006-07-18

This book bears the usual Tey earmarks--it's more story than mystery, the reader isn't given sufficient clues to solve the mystery, the language is sometimes a bit stilted, there are some (at least to me) obscure British expressions not understandable through the context, the main character Inspector Grant is considerably less than all-knowing, there are some annoying stereotypes (in this case Jews, in others foreigners in general), but the characterization of at least some of the characters is very fine. I've upgraded it to a 3 mostly because of the delightful character Erica. In this particular book, the ending is pulled out of a hat even more than Tey's usual ending. There are lots of red herrings too. Some were interesting--but not really explored very much--almost vignettes. The beginning of the novel seemed more like a play--and, of course, Tey was a playwright. Overall, it's just okay, nothing really special--not in a class with "Brat Farrar" or Tey's masterpiece, "Daughter of Time."

"The last legacy of all read, 'To my brother Herbert, a shilling for candles.'"
- from the last will and testament of Christine Clay, herein

The unusual title comes from a still more unusual clause in the last will and testament of superstar actress Christine Clay - an enigmatic legacy to her estranged brother. Clay worked her way up from nothing, with a mother who spoiled her brother rotten while having all kinds of excuses why Christine couldn't have proper schooling. Christine managed to escape to the life of the stage; her rise was so rapid that when she married a wealthy man with a title, she was considered to have made a catch, but within a couple of years *he* was thought of as 'Christine Clay's husband'. (Her background, gradually uncovered by police investigation, is enough to support a story in itself.) Now she has been found drowned at the lonely seaside place she was visiting incognito, and a youngster who seems like a stereotypical victim of circumstances is on the run, suspected of her murder for what seems like an inadequate motive. And given the brilliance of Christine Clay's shining star, why was she alone on holiday, with neither a court of hangers-on nor her husband?

Grant carries part of the story's action during his investigation, but Tey isn't shackled to a stylistic formula. Erica, the local Chief Constable's 16-year-old daughter, wades in where angels fear to tread, and generally assists Robin Tisdall, one of the chief suspects, to stay out of police custody while the police try to find out how Christine died. (This last provides an excuse for several mildly entertaining bit-part characters to appear, so I can live with it in the name of entertainment.)

A few too many plots getting in the way of the story, and could've used better editing to work as a book. I think it works better as a performance on the audio edition than it does on the page. As always when Stephen Thorne is the reader, the audio edition is performed well.

Elizabeth Mackintosh ("Josephine Tey" was a pseudonym) was primarily a playwright; she only produced 8 mystery novels altogether, 7 featuring Grant. Incidentally, she used yet another pseudonym, "Gordon Daviot", as both a playwright and for the original publication of many of her books. A SHILLING FOR CANDLES (1936) was Mackintosh's 2nd mystery novel, with an emphasis on 'novel' rather than 'who done it?' Tey isn't particularly interested in playing fair with the reader here, but I personally can live with that since the book works as a story. (I've taken off points for it, and for some issues with the story construction, but on the whole it's enjoyable, so the audio edition is worth having.)

3 out of 5 stars Got free time?.......2004-08-14

This book was pretty interesting. I was never into reading mysteries because I haven't actually read many. One of the reviews on the back of my version of the book caught my attention. It mentions, Balkan politics, crackpot religion and astrology. So I read it. It wasn't a waste of time (like some other books I've read).

4 out of 5 stars Testamentary Bequest.......2003-09-02

There is a dead body. Where is her car? Why is she swimming alone? It seems her body is expensively cared for. A young man appears on the scene, weeping. It seems that he had taken her car.

The name of the drowned woman is Christine Clay. Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is called to the scene by a worried constabulary. The young man, Robin Stannaway or Robert Tisdall, the name had been changed to Tisdall to please a relative, stayed with Chris. She had picked him up when hitchhiking, saying that she was alone. The boy clearly has charm.

Grant and others determine that it is probable murder. Christine Clay had worked her way up from a lace factory in Nottingham. About every six months she was in a different social sphere. Her real name was Christina Gotobend. She was married to Lord Edward Champneis. There was a button in Christine Clay's hair and evidence of a struggle. Tisdall had lost his coat. It had been made in Los Angeles and was, therefore, in its absence, unsuitable for button comparison. Edward Champneis is very dignified.

In her will Christine Clay left her brother Herbert a shilling for candles. When Grant discovers there is a codicil with a provision for Tisdall, he hastens to Scotland Yard. Grant regrets his inclination to like Tisdall. They seek to arrest him who appears to have no knowledge of the codicil in his favor. He escapes via a fire escape. Robert is befriended by another woman or girl, to be more precise. They think the solution to his problem is to find his missing overcoat to show there is no missing button. A clue is that an alcoholic china mender may have lifted the coat.

The book suffers from having the most likeable characters mainly off-stage or dead. In other respects, of course, it is wonderful, given that Josephine Tey was one of the best people writing in the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Golden Age Detective Novel Formula.......2003-02-27

Josephine Tey is a marvellous mystery writer, but she does use the Golden Age formula. In this book there are actually three plot strands (one of which is a murder). In true "Golden Age" fashion we don't get the answer to any of the three until the end when the murderer is unmasked. Even though she uses the formula, it is apparent in this book anyway that she likes to flout the rules. It's that hint of the unexpected that makes her books such a treasure. And her titles!! They say so much in so few words.

In this book Inspector Grant is looking into the drowning death of a famous film star. There are no shortage of suspects, and there is so much extraneous information that he gets quite frustrated trying to unravel it. But he peseveres and discovers the murderer in the end.

Fact based book that has helped me understand the Glycemic Index and how to eat so that I am not hungry within 15 minutes after eating.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on how to eat.......2006-05-12

This book is an excellent one for understanding how and what to eat. For those of us who may have grown up in families where it was always meat and potatoes until full, with an occasional soggy veg thrown in, this book is great at helping you learn what it means to eat in a healthy way that allows you to be full and lose weight if you need to. It even addresses exercise in ways that most people can do easily at home.

This is the first book on eating (or dieting) that I've really understood because it makes sense. No alarm bells went off in my head about eating this way, no doubt that I could sustain this way of eating for life, and no worrying about how much this was going to cost in specially purchased foods or gym memberships.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the recipes are pretty far out there and contain a lot of ingredients not readily available in the average kitchen. Plus, the cooking involved is probably something that would reduce the chance of anyone trying too many of these recipes.

It's entirely possible though to use types of foods that are low GI and imaginatively combine them in ways you're familiar with cooking and eating.

I would strongly recommend this book despite the difficult recipes at the end. The remainder of the book is excellent and will be one which makes sense to anyone who reads it. May we all achieve / maintain our desired weight and be healthier in the process!

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book on controlling glycemia.......2006-03-15

What recommended this book to me was that the authors were pioneers in the concept of the glycemic index. I knew intuitively that this concept mattered, but till recently all I knew was too many carbs were bad. But this is one of the books that corrects that notion to say that what matters is how directly a carbohydrate enters the bloodstream. Too directly means a load on the pancreas, perhaps an overreaction, perhaps hypoglycemia, and over time insulin resistance. The book not only explains that lucidly but then it moves on to explain how a person can revise his diet so that there is a healthy percentage of carbs without these adverse results. I can't say if the book is superior to others, but I can say that it contains useful information expressed in understandable terms.

In my opinion, the low GI diet is a healthy diet not only for weight loss but for people who want to delay the onset of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. The statistics concerning GI values of common food serves as an excellent resource and the suggested menus are easy to follow.

And yet, I added this book to my "collection" and I have found a few gems that have made the purchase of the book worth the money. Because food is so expensive and the price of a meal doesn't always equate to its quality, you need all the advice you can get - especially in NYC. Also, I feel it's important to support the people who are trying to make a difference by producing a great product.

Take Lupa - a Mario Batali partnership. The staff, decor, freshness, price, variety, creativity, presentation and professionalism separate it from the pack. The write-up in this book matches my experience. It's a special place and is described by someone who knows food.

I use it in conjunction with other books to fine tune my visits. Especially useful for new restaurants or visits to new areas of the City. I call it cheap insurance.

4 out of 5 stars I think I need to eat in NYC!.......2005-01-11

A guide to restaurants, markets and bars in New York City, written by New York locals and Slow Food members.

Slow Food has the principles of tradition, conviviality, sustainability, as well as an emphasis on homemade foods.

This guide is divided into three parts: Cuisines (African, British, Vegetarian, Scandinavian, Latin American etc.); Special Foods and Nightlife (Wine Bars, Coffe and Tea Houses, Brunch etc.); and Food Shops, Markets and Producers (Farmers' Markets, Fish and Seafood Markets, Ethnic and Specialty Food Markets etc.). Each description includes the types of meals found at each location, the atmosphere, address, telephone number and average cost for a meal.

There are a few black and white photographs. Most are scenic shots of New York City, while others are photos of people creating meals at restaurants. This guide seems to be quite helpful and useful despite my not being able to actually go to New York City and try the book out personally. Though having said that, I will have to say, it is definitely much more detailed than the Zagat books.

Try this little gem out. It is more detailed than Zagats and written by locals! The amount of entries in this book are over 500! There are sure to be some wonderful gems for you to discover on your next trip to New York City!

5 out of 5 stars The Best NY Food Guide I've Found (and I've Seen a Lot).......2005-01-01

Firstly, I would like to respond to the reviewer who called it a "comically inept production." Beyond being completely clueless and having probably not read the book, the reviewer clearly has no understanding of what the book, and the slowfood movement, are meant to be. He chides the fact that the author cites Katz's and other fast-food like restaurants and reviews them well. The fact is, Slowfood is not the antithesis of food prepared quickly. It is opposed to a culture that creates restaurants like McDonalds, quite different from a restaurant that gets its food to you quickly that the book might have mentioned. McDonalds, and the type of fast food that the movement opposes, presses out pre-frozen, tasteless, chemically concocted and near-poisonous masses of protein and starch. Restaurants such as the many taquerias and sandwich shops noted in the book are different. They are run by people who care about their food and make it by hand every day. They produce real, tasty food that happens to come out quickly. To deride the quick serving restaurants noted by the book because they go against the Slowfood theme is simply ignorant.

As well, the book does not aim to be a repeat of the many books that once and again laud the many grand and expensive restaurants of Bocuse and his peers. It aims to be a guide for those who want to find the many tasty ethnic "dives" in a city best known for its ethnic diversity.

And in that spirit, it excels. The book had loads of cheap and tasty restaurants that, even though they often had fast service, stayed true to the book's mission and served fresh and tasty food.

To also deride the book by saying "Clearly, this thing was put together by amateurs" is once again remarkably ignorant and thoughtless. The majority of today's tourbooks are complete frauds. I just came back from Mexico after going to several of the worst restaurants in the country (I'm convinced.) I've had great food there and was perplexed as to how the Fodors book could have had the food (and our hotel) so wrong. Sitting at the restaurant, I noticed a phrase on the menu that seemed familiar. Looking into the tour book I saw the exact same phrase for the restuarant. The menu had several starred (literally) "special" items. The only recommendations in the book were the starred items on the menu (all of them,) and the descriptions of the items came straight off of the menu. The writer had never even gone into the damn restaurant.

All of which is to say that "experienced" tour book writers are often far worse than amateurs. The "amateurs" in the Slowfood book take the time to eat at and review hundreds of hidden restaurants you couldn't find anywhere else, and they actually do the reviewing themselves (and a good job).
I've tried loads of NY food guides, and this one was truly the best I've found.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of the best NYC eats.......2004-03-15

As a frequent traveller to Italy, I have found the Slow Food Guide to be invaluable for restaurant recommendations throughout that entire country. The Slow Food organization has consistently provided knowledgeable reviews of places that offer traditional regional cuisine for excellent value. Now that Slow Food is expanding its scope to other cities and countries, I am happy to report that its New York guide also provides reliable reviews of some of the city's best eating establishments.

Note that, unlike Zagat, the Slow Food guide is not meant to be comprehensive. Instead, the contributors have chosen to write about a handful of some of the best restaurants for each cuisine category, ranging from cheap takeout places to famous four star establishments. Inevitably, some noteworthy restaurants have been left off of the list -- but those that have been included are highly worthy representatives of their respective cuisines.

Also, unlike Zagat, the reviews contain far more knowledgeable insights about ethnic restaurants in the city. Instead of providing entries about places that are popular but have watered-down cuisine for Western tastes, the contributors provide descriptions of outstanding and occasionally lesser-known restaurants that serve more authentic fare. In particular, the guide highlights some of the best ethnic restaurants in the outer boroughs, which are too frequently ignored by the Zagat reviewers and clientele. For example, the guide recommends Sripraphai Thai restaurant in Woodside, Queens -- and their inclusion of this relatively overlooked gem indicates that this is a guide well worth following.

In summary, the Slow Food guide is not necessarily meant to be a comprehensive survey book like Zagat's, but its focus on some of the best New York restaurants -- regardless of cost or borough -- makes this guide potentially even more valuable to New York visitors. I look forward to seeing more excellent city guides appearing State-side from the Slow Food organization.

This is a great book to describe the basics of living with your pom. The author has a friendly tone and seems to have a lot of experience with poms of her own. It really reviews everything you need to know...training, feeding, grooming...the works! I just adopted a two year old dog and this book is great because it doesn't focus on the puppy years only. It addresses that time well, but gives wonderful overall advice. Great buy!

This is a book I refer to constantly since I've just started to learn embroidery. It contains photos of each embroidery technique with a diagram of how the needle works the canvas to get the result shown in the photo above it. Over 240 types of stitches are demonstrated. There are explanations of surface embroidery techniques such as line, couching, chain and band stitches all the way to laidwork. Another chapter gives info on various types of counted thread work such as Assisi, counted cross-stitch, blackwork, hardanger, drawn and pulled. There are chapters covering metal thread embroidery, machine embroidery, applique and quilting.

One of the final chapters is titled Other Techniques and shows how to include such things as beadwork, cutwork, eyelet, ribbon work, stump work, smocking and needlelace. The final chapter presents a gallery of textile artists work using all these techniques. Believe me, this chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Whenever I view what these artists have accomplished with a needle and thread it never fails to amaze and inspire me. You won't find any patterns or projects in this book. But you'll get plenty of clear photos and diagrams of a large number of techniques you can use for your own designs.

A gem for embroiderers who like using their creativity more than following patterns. Brown does not only show many different stitches and techniques, but also, in the last chapter, beautiful photographs of the work of true needle artists. The feeling I get from this book is that I too, with a bit of practice and fantasy, can make such wonderful things. I reach for this book many times!

Shortly after Kathan Brown founded Crown Point Press in 1963, she began inviting painters and sculptors from around the world to join her in her studio to experiment with the art of printmaking. This book is a loving tribute to 56 of these artists, most of whom had no previous printmaking experience. Ink, Paper, Metal, Wood is broken up into 21 chapters that discuss various printmaking procedures, each of which is illustrated with the work of these world-renowned artists and includes Brown's recollections of their experiences. Produced by Chronicle Books, the book has an elegant, airy design and is handsomely bound in paper over board.

                                Book Description

`This volume, which brings together more than seventy woodcuts and an excellent introduction by the artist, carries with it the same brooding quality of that first print I saw of the Baldoon mystery house. The lines are rich and black, and the images -- abandoned schoolhouses, solitary silos, rough hewn barrels -- are like pastoral poems. In fact, this emphasis on nature and the small size of the woodcuts with the accompanying feeling on compactness and economy, suggests an affinity to the Japanese haiku. Brender à Brandis' ability to capture mood is unparalleled.

`In this book he draws us into scenes like that of a windswept kite set against a blustery spring day with the skeletal branches and fence rows, or that of a gigantic setting sun blazing through a field of winter wheat, or the quietude of an upstairs room in a farmhouse. There are also pictures of abandoned broken windmills, fishing tugs, pine washstands, black-eyed susans, windowsills ... all quiet, contemplative and reserved.' - Marty Gervais, The Windsor Star

John Robert Bond, son of a white Englishwoman and a black laborer on the Liverpool waterfront, became a sailor in the American Union Navy and married Emma Thomas, a Virginia woman born into slavery, in 1865. Chronicling their lives and those of their children and grandchildren, the author (their great-granddaughter Adele Logan Alexander) presents a dramatic family saga intertwined with a sweeping account of the black experience in America from 1846, the year of John's birth, to 1926, when Emma died at age 80. Most of the Bonds were talented, determined, and successful beyond the norm--John and Emma's progeny included a prosperous businessman and a Radcliffe graduate who was a close friend of W.E.B. Du Bois--but Alexander firmly links their story to the struggles and suffering of all African Americans, delineating with blistering matter-of-factness the galling restrictions they faced every day in every generation. Alexander, a professor of history at George Washington University, provides a bracingly unsentimental perspective on events as big as the Civil War and as seemingly small as the installation of a new sewer system in Dedham, Massachusetts. She writes American history with a refreshing difference, reminding us of the richness that oft-maligned "multiculturalism" brings to our intellectual life. --Wendy Smith

                                              Book Description

This monumental history traces the rise of a resolute African American family (the author's own) from privation to the middle class. In doing so, it explodes the stereotypes that have shaped and distorted our thinking about African Americans--both in slavery and in freedom.

Beginning with John Robert Bond, who emigrated from England to fight in the Union Army during the Civil War and married a recently freed slave, Alexander shows three generations of Bonds as they take chances and break new ground.

From Victorian England to antebellum Virginia, from Herman Melville's New England to the Jim Crow South, from urban race riots to the battlefields of World War I, this fascinating chronicle sheds new light on eighty crucial years in our nation's troubled history. The Bond family's rise from slavery, their interaction with prominent figures such as W. E. B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington, and their eventual, uneasy realization of the American dream shed a great deal of light on our nation's troubled heritage.
