Book Description

Dandy Gilver, her husband back from the War, her children off at school and her uniform growing musty in the attic, is bored to a whimper in the spring of 1923 and a little light snooping seems like harmless fun. And what could be better than to seek out the Duffy diamonds, stolen from the Esselmont's country house, Croys, after the Armistice Ball? Before long, though, the puzzle of what really happened to the Duffy diamonds has been swept aside by the sudden, unexpected death of lovely young Cara Duffy in a lonely seaside cottage in Galloway. Society and the law seem ready to call it an accident but Dandy, along with Cara Duffy's fiancé Alec, is sure that there is more going on than meets the eye.

What is being hidden by members of the Duffy family: the watchful Lena, the cold and distant Clemence and old Gregory Duffy with his air of quiet sadness, not to mention Cara herself whose secret always seems just tantalizingly out of view? Dandy must learn to trust her instincts and swallow most of her scruples if he is to uncover the truth and earn the right to call herself a sleuth.

4 out of 5 stars a very promising debut..........2005-09-04

Reading "After the Armistice Ball" was almost like stepping back in time and a bit of a challenge. To begin with the author's, Catriona McPherson, style of writing was reminiscent of Nancy Mitford and E.F. Benson, with some (very) light Agatha Chrsitie-like touches thrown in. All this really takes getting uses to -- esp characters' tendency to pepper practically all their conversations with the word "darling." But once you get used to it, the book was quite the enjoyable read, full of atmosphere and colour, and fairly intriguing from beginning to end.

World War I is over, and the landed gentry is beginning to feel the pinch not only of the changing times and fashions, but also monetarily-wise. All except the Esslmonts, that is. Silas and Daisy Esslmont are enjoying all the comforts and luxury that owning the very distasteful and comercial enterprise of an insurance company can bring. That is until scandal rears its ugly head. Lena Duffy has discovered to her horror that the fabulous Duffy diamonds are fakes, and she's claiming that the switch must have taken place when she was visitng the Esslemonts during the Armistice Ball. She wants Silas to pay for stolen diamonds and because he won't (because the policy has lapsed) is conducting a whispering campaign about Silas' culpability and his lack of honour. At her wit's end about what to do, Daisy, Silas's wife, hires Dandy Gilver to find out what it is Lena really wants. Bored with life at the moment, Dandy readily agrees, especially since Daisy has offered her a fee to solve her problem for her. But the last thing Dandy expected when she agreed to act as go-between for Lena and the Esslemonts was to become involved in the suspicious death of a young giril she's rather fond of, or that trying to make heads or tails as to what's going on would bring her face to face with a very cold blooded killer...

Cationa McPherson has written a very absorbing debut novel. The prose style may take a little getting used to, and Dandy's tendency not to accept certain unpleasant home truths mainly because she cannot believe anyone of her set would behave that way can get a little grating, but that manner in which the author presents us with a strata of society that has had its time and that is struggling to come to grips with the change while valiantly plowing onwards, was fasincating. So that even though "After the Armistice Ball" was not very supenseful and lacked any telling plot twists and red herring suspects, it was a compelling read neonetheless. Reading of how Dandy gradually come to realise what's going on, and how she manages to solve the mystery was great fun -- I rather enjoyed the realistic manne in which the author presented us with how an amateur investigator would naturally blunder about while trying to solve her first case. A well written and enjoyable read, this is especially for readers who enjoy mysteries set in the 1920s and that is full of vibrant fun.

Book Description

There have been many events in the past 230 years of the half-magical race of the Deryni that were too short to turn into novels. Katherine Kurtz has been writing these when not occupied with longer works, and they are now collected here. Some have appeared in books and other sources now hard to locate. More than half of the fiction is new -- including a major story of how Denis Arilan became the first Deryni priest in 200 years.

Katherine Kurtz has provided an introduction and individual headings for each story to indicate her feelings and intents in writing each tale. Additionally, there is the complete first story she ever wrote -- the first version of her Deryni vision, and how it all came about.

For all the myriad lovers of the Deryni, this should be a must book -- both for pleasure and as a reference!

4 out of 5 stars Fun collection.......2004-11-20

This series of snapshots into the lives of Deryni and non-Deryni alike is wonderfully entertaining, from the story of how Rhys Thuryn found his calling to the tale of how Denis Arilan found his way around the deadly drug Merasha to became the first Deryni priest in centuries.

Sean Lord Derry deserved a story of his own; a well-done one too.

I especially liked "The Priesting of Arilan." Of course, I was hooked from the time I first found out he was Deryni. But it's strange that all his later associates...Kelson, Morgan, and Duncan, don't seem to grasp at all who he is. Kurtz will have to tell us if it really was a miracle someday...or at least how Arilan manipulated things so that Duncan could safely be ordained!

5 out of 5 stars How fun!.......2002-12-28

I found these short stories only brought about more curiousuty. I would love to see many of them that were about little known characters developed into their own novels, and am greatful for the additional information on characters that have already been introduced. Thanks are due to Mrs. Kurtz for putting together this anthology.

4 out of 5 stars a nice treat.......2002-11-02

Fantasy worlds seem ripe for short story collections. An author may not want to visit favorite characters for a brand new book and many authors refuse to publish books during the historical times mentioned in their novels. For a reader and a fan, it would be a fun and entertaining experience to revist old friends like that and learn more about how things came about in our favorite worlds. Happily, Katherine Kurtz published the Deryni Archives, a collection of short fiction set in her Deryni universe.

The Deryni series has left many unanswered questions about the history of the Deryni race, The Camberian Council, as well as Camber's children (and grandchildren). I would like to know more about them. This book does revist both major and minor moments in the history of the the Eleven Kingdoms and i have no complaints with the book. I just want more!

The stories contained in this book are short treats. We see some of the kinder moments that would have no place in a full novel, are nice glimpses into the lives of the characters. We see how a Deryni bishop is ordained.

I can only hope that Katherine Kurtz will release another set of Archives (not Deryni Tales, i mean more stories actually written by Kurtz).

5 out of 5 stars 8 short stories spanning generations.......2002-05-28

"Catalyst" - Written for _Moonsinger's Friends_, an anthology dedicated for Andre Norton, so Kurtz produced a coming-of-age story concerning Camber MacRorie's children (including the eldest son who was killed off early in the novels), as well as using her own cats as characters. Camber's children, including the fosterling Rhys, are receiving a Michaeline education - not because of their tutors' sometimes overzealous application of ethics, but simply because it's virtually the finest schooling to be had. Young Joram, predictably, has announced his intention to join the order when he's old enough, while Rhys doesn't know yet what he wants to do with his life. Lots of typical rainy day squabbling among the kids opens the story, as Rhys' lack of strategic insight becomes woefully apparent during a chess game with Joram. The adults are out hunting - but the kids turn out not to be the only people who know about the absence of most of the MacRorie household, when a bandit gang tries a sneak attack.

"Healer's Song" - Set after the central incident from _Saint Camber_. While giving us a more detailed portrait of the traditions surrounding Healers and their training in Rhys Thuryn's day, the central incident of this story isn't concerned with Rhys' own training, but that of the birth and baptism of his third child, when the infant's Healing potential is discovered.

"Vocation" - Set late in the reign of Uthyr Haldane, Cinhil's grandson, when the anti-Deryni reactionaries have shaped policy for half a century or so. Gilrae d'Eirial, whose calling to become a priest was set aside for his role as his father's heir, has long taken comfort in visiting the ruins of St. Neot's - although the monastery was Deryni and he is not, it brings back childhood memories. It's far too late now, though - both accident and illness have combined to leave him physically unfit for either priesthood or military service. He's just come to visit his childhood sanctuary, and his old friend the hermit Simonn who lives here, this last Christmas Eve before his father's death seals his fate.

"Bethane" - Set 20 years before the old crone Bethane's appearance in _Deryni Checkmate_; she was an eccentric, elderly widow even then, but not one to put up with children - even noble-born children - amusing themselves by scaring her sheep. We find out a little more about her background, and whether or not she was really a witch.

"The Priesting of Arilan" - One of the strictures of the Council of Ramos was that Deryni were forbidden to enter the priesthood on pain of death. This story explores the means used by the church to detect Deryni making the attempt, and how Denis Arilan managed to foil the system.

"Legacy" - Kelson's father Brion, as we know from various references to the story in later years, killed Charissa's father, the Marduk - representative of the Deryni claimants to the Gwynedd throne through the Festillic line, descendants of an incestuous union though they are. This version of the Marduk story is an eyewitness account, but from Charissa's viewpoint. It also provides a sidelight on Wencit of Torenth. (Kurtz promises in passing to one day tell the story of how he as second son came to be king of Torenth.)

"The Knighting of Derry" - How Morgan and Derry first met, and how Derry took service with Morgan.

"Trial" - While attending a convention in need of funds, Kurtz offered to auction off a one-page scene involving the highest bidder with the character of his or her choice. Since the fans reacted like piranha to meat and began pooling resources, the end result is that the pair who won got a 2-page scene which grew into this story. Stalker got his wish to be a King's Ranger courting a Deryni minstrel girl, while Ferris the wandering swordsmith, as a foreigner, gets into difficulties as a stranger in a strange land.

4 out of 5 stars This book is filled with interesting, short stories!.......1999-08-04

It allows a further look into the lives of Camber's children and the healer, Rhys Thuryn. I reccomend it to people who would like to learn more about the Deryni world.

The Five Tibetans is a yogic system of highly energizing postures and exercises that originated in the Himalayas. Liberating and enhancing the innate energetic power of the human body and mind, these five exercises take a minimum of daily time and effort but offer remarkable results in the way of increased physical strength and suppleness as well as mental acuity. In addition, these exercises can be a vehicle for enlivening the senses and generating and harnessing energy for the purpose of self-transformation.

        Regular practice of these postures:
Relieves muscular tension and nervous stress
        Improves respiration and digestion
        Benefits the cardiovascular system
Leads to deep relaxation and well-being
        Tunes and energizes the chakras

The Five Tibetans are explained within the context of traditional yoga, providing a foundation for understanding.

Black-and-white photographs and illustrations complement the text and clearly indicate the proper execution of each exercise.

4 out of 5 stars Really good companion!.......2006-12-06

When I first bought this book a few years ago I tried it but after a few days lost interest. Later that year I found it again between other books I kept in a box and decided to try it again. And yes, it works!
It is not a long book, and it will take you maybe one or two days to read it. That being said, I think that it is a great source for those (like me) that like a quick dose of yoga, whether because of time or whatever reason.
The exercises within are great, and you can do them wherever you want without the need for a mat or blanket.
        Ideal for traveling.

        5 out of 5 stars expect miracles.......2006-11-03

While recovering from a traumatic bicycling injury, I read Mr. Kilham's book and started out slowly.
I regularly increased my duration and am now incorporating The Five Tibetans into my daily life.
The exercises have opened up healing and strength channels I did not know existed. My recovery time was cut in half.
The book took all of one afternoon to read and understand, but the benefits will last a lifetime.

        4 out of 5 stars Pretty good!.......2006-05-12

I've been doing the exercises comprised in this book for the past few years -indeed they are good, indeed they work, but as with everything that regards the human body you can't expect them to work without you putting a bit of effort... I haven't been able to find such book yet, a book that can change your life or your health or the way in which you look at your own life by just reading it. Everything requires an effort.

If you are commited and decide to try these exercises go ahead, for they will work. They comprise a simple routine that can be done everywhere and at any time of the day.

But most important, look at the bright side of life!

        5 out of 5 stars Five Tibetans.......2006-03-24

Being a yoga practitioner for 6 years now - I found this book to be an excellent resource for those who want a quick effective yoga workout - those who don't have the time to do an hour a day as I do. It is also good for when you travel as it requires no mats, blocks, blankets or any of the other props needed for most yoga regimes. Only thing I found disconcerting was the First Tibetan which made me naseuous. I have to assume this would subside with time. Well written and easy to follow. A simple but effective book.

        Book Description

As varied and intense in taste as it is simple to cook, Caribbean cuisine is a fascinating mixture of styles from the many nationalities who have settled throughout the Islands over the centuries. From "one-pot" cooking to more elaborate meals, from meat and fish to vegetarian delights, the food is always colorful and full of flavor. Spiced with hot pepper sauces, fragrant marinades and fiery spice rubs, these recipes are easy to prepare using the step-by-step, full-color photographs.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A solid collection of Caribbean recipes.......2006-07-12

If you've ever traveled to the Caribbean and developed a taste for the cuisine of the islands, this is a very good book for learning some of the basics. Classic dishes such as Callaloo, Beef Patties, Jerk Pork, and Picadillo are all presented, as well as more unusual and elegant dishes such as Banana-Stuffed Chicken and Calypso Rabbit. An introduction to common Caribbean foodstuffs is presented, as well as photographs of each dish and the various ingredients as needed for them.

Difficulty of the dishes varies from easy and quick to fairly complicated and time-consuming. One thing I would have liked included in the recipe descriptions is the island of origin of each dish, as some definitely have more Spanish influences than others, or are unlike any I've seen on the islands I've personally visited. While not an extensive encyclopedia of Caribbean cooking, this book is a fine introduction for most home chefs, and much more useful, than many of the small volumes of recipes often sold to tourists on the islands.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Caribbean cuisine........2003-01-09

In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Caribbean Cooking, starts with glossary of ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from soups and appetizers to bread, cakes, desserts and drinks. Special chapters are dedicated to fish, poultry and game, and (red) meat dishes, vegetables, salads and rice. Classics such as banana bread, callaloo, rum, pineapple and other tropical punches, fried plantains, glazed sweet potatoes, tuna steaks, palm hearts, picadillo, pina colada, pineapple and coconut cake, and pork and banana kabobs appear next to unique dishes such as Grenadan coo-coo (fried cornmeal and coconut squares) with papaya salsa, lime and coconut meringue pie, mango turkey, pineapple and ginger ribs, and quail in rum and raisin sauce.

From ackee and saltfish to yam salad, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the richness of the Caribbean cuisine - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough pictures about goldfish diseases.......2004-12-16

This book's just too general. The contents are just too basic. It doesn't contain too much info about goldfish diseases. I think the book contains info about general freshwater fishes rather than goldfishes. Also there're only a few pictures that shown the goldfish diseases. Some diseases written in the book don't even have pictures. I will say it's a book for a real beginner (knows nothing about freshwater fishes) rather than goldfish lovers.

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST Goldfish Book EVER!!!.......2002-11-13

If you want a Happy and Healthy Goldfish, BUY THIS BOOK. I've owned this book for a year and a half and I Love it to this day!!! This book is filled with Beautiful Color pictures, easy to understand concepts, and all the information you could ever want on Goldfish. This book has made me so knowledgeable that my friends call me "the Goldfish doctor".

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not totally current.......2002-08-01

Aquarium technology has advanced quite a bit since this book was first written, so that portion of the book is only of limited use. However, the information on care and feeding of one's goldfish is excellent. Nonetheless, if you are going to get just one book on goldfish, I recommend The Essential Goldfish, by Maddy Hargrove, which is an updated version of this book..

5 out of 5 stars Good first book.......2002-07-05

I just set up a small outdoor pond and was not really interested in Koi because of the cost and the fact that they can get big so goldfish seemed the logical choice.
Other than having one in a bowl when I was a kid, I didn't know anything about them. Now I know I will never put one in a bowl again and have learned all kinds of interesting things about these fascinating creatures. I am sure there are other books that may go into more detail on some topics but this book seems to cover just about everything. I don't think you will be disappointed. Clear, easy to read and understand. Good photos but I wish there were more - can't please everyone.

            3 out of 5 stars A good, informative book.......2002-05-08

This book has helped me gain an understanding of goldfish and how to take care of them. Written by Carlo DeVito with Gregory Skomal, it was released in 1996. The 156 pages consist of five chapters. The color photographs of the varieties of goldfish are nice. Several drawings are also included--one of these is a color drawing of a goldfish with its external features pointed out. Handy sidebars are interspersed throughout. Examples of topics discussed are the history of goldfish, the body and its structure, the senses, selecting goldfish, varieties, setup of the aquarium, plants, feeding, aquarium maintenance, breeding, diseases, and pondkeeping. There is an appendix, which is composed of an alphabetical listing of 80 well-known varieties of goldfish, and a bibliography. I find this to be a pleasing, useful publication and recommend it.

This is one of the best general books on Fostoria I have been able to locate thus far. Well organized and useful. Great pictures.

If you have stemware and need to identify it, this is the book for you. There's a goblet index in the back which refers to the main book by numbers. I have found it invaluable for quick reference. Having ounces and height given really helps to identify which pieces one has. Each pattern is given production dates, and if it was made in several colors, production dates are given for each color.

                    Book Description

The Kelmscott Chaucer is the greatest and most influential book never to have been read. This apparent paradox is due to two factors. First, its appearance, the density of type and illustration, the interwoven magnificence of the page, are so overwhelming that the would-be reader is simply defeated by its wealth. The eye, invited to admire so much visual magnificence, is absorbed by it and strays away for the actual text. Secondly, the book was originally expensive and is now even more so; those who turn its pages do so with care lest they mar its clean white pages or strain its elegant binding. Its creator, William Morris, would have been mystified and annoyed by these reactions. To him, the creation of a book in which text, decoration, and illustration were a single whole, none of whose parts could be separated from each other, was a tribute to the text, the greatest tribute that could be paid to it.

No greater tribute to the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer, could be paid than to give his works the finest possible form. The Kelmscott Chaucer was widely hailed as a masterpiece when it appeared on June 16, 1896, and rapidly sold out. It is not the least of the abiding results of Morris's life and work to set the standard by which the quality of book production is measured. Still more important is the respect due to a great book, and if all the Kelmscott Chaucers, scattered about the world, have a purpose today it is to encourage such respect. Worldly wisdom may require most of them to be preserved from the hands that Morris would have wished to turn their pages; that they can now do so in electronic form is surely a fate that he would have applauded.

Sonia Sanchez, Betty Shabazz, Zora Neale Hurston, Florence Griffith-Joyner. What do these women have in common aside from the fact that they're all African Americans? Answer: They've all contributed to the positive image of black women in America, and around the world. Buy this book for your home library. It's a wonderful reference book. Buy it especially for your daughters. They can read a story a week and by the time they're finished with the book, they will have a fairly good idea of the glorious strength and resilience of black women.
