Peters' Most Excellent Mystery.......2006-03-25
This is the fourth Brother Cadfael mystery that I have read (I happened upon a random selection in a neighbor's giveaway bin) and it is definitely the best so far. The title, taken from the Book of Common Prayer ("O God, who hast consecrated the state of Matrimony to such an excellent mystery"), is more than apt.
The overall theme of this installment could be briefly summarized as "things are not what they seem". While this is true in most mystery novels it is true in spades here. A young women is mugged and murdered--or is she? A monk has a homosexual crush on another monk--or does he? Sorry, I've probably already said too much.
As usual, there are several romantic plot threads, always a nice touch in the midst of a mystery story. Brother Cadfael, in this installment, does not use his deductive powers so much to solve the mystery as to analyze it as it unfolds. This heightens the suspense because we don't get let in on the inner workings of Cadfael's mind.
Another reason why this novel rises a notch above the others is the role that the 12th century English history plays in the story. In previous installments the history, while interesting and informative, sometimes makes the book hard to get into. Here, the history plays a central role in the story, as the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud provides both the impetus for several new characters to show up in Shrewsbury, as well as making it more difficult to track down the information necessary to solve the mystery.
In addition to being a good read, I think this would make a great movie. I see from another review that the series has been dramatized, presumably for British TV. It's too bad this series is not more widely circulated, perhaps if more people knew about it a movie would be more likely. Or, alternatively, maybe somebody should make a movie anyway, so that people who would not normally read the books can enjoy these excellent mysteries.

In this eleventh chronicle of Brother Cadfael of the Abbey of St.Peter and St.Paul in Shrewsbury, the ongoing war between King Stephen and Empress Maud has come to a stalemate, following the sacking and burning of the city of Winchester. With Stephen still a prisoner in Bristol, Maud had barricaded herself and her forces within the city when Stephen's queen, Matilda, attacked the city with fire arrows, destroying the monasteries and convents and causing the general flight of all who could escape. Two Benedtictine monks arrive at the Shrewsbury Abbey, begging for refuge and a new home. Humilis, the elder, is an ex crusader, like Cadfael, but had been severely wounded in battle. Fidelis, the younger monk, is mute, and is Humilis's carer, tending him with complete devotion. Cadfael realises that Humilis is close to death and tends him with loving care. At the same time, a hue and cry is set up to find the whereabouts of the former fiancee of Humilis who had wished to enter a convent after her betrothal vows were rescinded by Humilis who knew that he could never be a husband to her with his shocking wounds. Sheriff Hugh Beringar is afraid that the girl was robbed and murdered en route to the convent as she was never seen again. Wise and worldly Cadfael sees beyond outward appearences and soon becomes aware of the deceptions being carried out. With his aid, the well meant perpetrators reach a satisfactory conclusion to their trouble and the life of the Abbey goes on as smoothly as possible in these turbulent times.

"... this story was most tedious and far-fetched. I couldn't believe that this young woman would do what she did for a man she hardly knew..."
I am currently reading The Crusades by Zoe Oldenbourg. From this book and others, the type of action taken by this young woman is very believable *FOR THE TIME*. Women worshipped heroic men and marriage was not a match for love, but for property. To put it in a more modern perspective, what if a young girl was told that in 10 years time she would be the wife of Harrison Ford or Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt or Kid Rock.
Certainly, she would spend much of her growing years yearning for every scrap of information and growing into a bond with the legend of him.
Peters plays fair.......2001-05-24
This is the first Brother Cadfael mystery i've read. It was, perhaps, not the most fortuitous choice i could have made; certainly it was rather different from my expectation. Part of the difference can, of course, be explained by the fact that i have seen some four or five of the adaptations starring Derek Jacobi, so despite my best efforts i interpreted everything i read through that filter, seeing the characters in my mind according to their development in the television shows. The murder/mystery is well plotted out, though simple not quite simplistic, and nicely both hidden and revealed. I can point to the exact paragraph, sentence even, i was reading when i suddenly knew ~ not through anything revealed in that paragraph ~ the solution; the rest was mere reading to prove myself correct and see how Peters would handle the results of the revelation. Though this was not what i expected, i shall read another Cadfael book, just to learn a little more about him, and to see if i can't erase Jacobi's excellent interpretation from my mind.
A Very Good Mystery.......2001-04-28
It is the late summer of 1141. The war between King Stephen and Empress Maud to decide who will rule England continues. As the fighting rages, the abbey in Winchester is destroyed and two of the displaced monks find their way to the Abbey of Saints Peter and Paul at Shrewsbury. Brother Humilis is a former crusader who is slowly dying of his wounds. He is accompanied by Brother Fidelis, a young mute who is devoted (for reasons unknown) to the care of Humilis. But their relationship is only one mystery. Another is what has happened to Julian Croce, a young woman fron a manor in the north of the shire who seems to have disappeared while on her way to join a convent near Winchester.
Peters books are a pleasure to read. She exhibits an elegant turn of phrase that. As someone else here has already remarked, she makes the "grim and gritty middle ages" sound like someplace you might actually want to live. And this is one of her better plots. I figured out what was going on about halfway through, but only because I got an unintentional hint from someone who had already read the book. Even so, it was a pleasure to watch the story unfold.
Elegant style and clever plotting aside, however, the story is a bit over-romanticized. For example, at one point Nicholas rides non-stop from Winchester to Shrewsbury, through both day and night and, finally, through a storm. He "must get his tale at once to the ears of authority" and he "dared not stop hating, or the remaining grief became more than he could stand." All this intense feeling over a girl he had only met once, three years earlier. Sorry if this makes me a chauvinist, but clearly this is a woman writing about how women wish men felt about them. This is the mystical ideal of chivalrous love. It isn't how a young man would really feel under such circumstances. This is typical of Peters and it doesn't really hurt the story, but it is a bit gushy and you can tell a woman wrote it. For a male reader, it's just a little over the top.
Peters is a charming writer. She paints a vivid, if somewhat romanticized, picture of life in the 1100's. Cadfael and the rest of her characters are congenial and her stories are light, but entertaining. The mysteries are sometimes a bit transparent, but not this one. This is one of her better ones. Cadfael fans will definitely enjoy it. Others should keep in mind that this is definitely a romantic mystery. Also, if you haven't read a Cadfael mystery before, you should consider starting at the beginning of the series. That said, I recommend "An Excellent Mystery" to those who like this type of story. It's better than most.

Broken Minds.......2005-07-29
Broken Minds is a soon to be published book. It should 'hit the streets' October 2005. Its sub title is "Hope for Healing When You Feel Like You're Losing It".
The book is about mood disorders, especially as one who has "been there", author Steve Bloem. It is co-authored by his wife Robyn Bloem. An aim of the authors is to help both the sufferer of mental illness and her/his caregivers, get out of the dark pit of depression. Stigma still surrounds depression and other forms of mental illness. The church of Jesus Christ is asked to deal with the taboo of suicide and also the pervasive pain that is inherent in maladies of the mind.
It is easy to read and chocked full of important truths for the reader. Kregel publications says it well, "A deeply personal, yet practical, book for Christians who are clinically depressed or have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Mental illness. Those words bring to mind frightening scenes of padded walls, white straightjackets, and screaming people. But mental illness is often much more subtle-and much more prevalent than we imagine. Unfortunately, people who are diagnosed as being mentally ill may not understand what is happening to them. And for Christians, some "helpful" leaders heap on guilt, saying that the problem is spiritual rather than physical in nature. This book takes Steve's personal story of major depression and weaves through it Robyn's insights and Steve's professional knowledge. The result is a tapestry of practical information- including definitions, treatment options, government services available, and interactions with the church and God-and a deep compassion for those who feel like their world is falling apart".
Amazing work on an interesting filmmaker.......2002-02-11
Maitland has written a very admirable study of one of the world's most interesting horror filmmakers. She even goes to the trouble of defending the more nonsensical moments of Arengto's films. For example, the scene in Suspiria where a murder victim stumbles across a room full of barbed wire makes no logical sense, but after you read Maitland explain how Argento works (kind of like surrealists, he uses a technique called "Automatic writing" which involves very little, if any, editing) you begin to understand that maybe Argento isn't neccesarily TRYING to make sense. At any rate she does a fine job of defending him, as well as delving into recurring themes. One of the better books on a director you will ever read.
Fascinating look at the Gialli Rancher.......2001-09-24
This is a great book. If you're a fan of Dario Argento, the Italian maestro of horror, or if you're just a fan of well-made, artistically-minded horror films, you should read this book (and should take a closer look at the films of Dario Argento).
"Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds" is out of print, but you can buy a used copy through Amazon.com (as I did) for a cheaper price. But then you must prepare yourself for a whirl-wind.
This book discusses in intimate detail the films of the great Dario Argento. The introduction gives us some context of who he is (ex-film critic, master of the beautiful and profane), where he came from (an Italian movie-making family and the tutelage of spaghetti-western-maker Sergio Leone), what he does (makes a particular style of thriller called a giallo and often draws on the broken imagery of dreams for his most effective material).
Then we're off on a film-by-film analysis of Argento's career. We study the films he's made, the choices he's made within those films, and gain an appreciation, if we don't already have one, of why this Argento is such a unique, talented film-maker.
"Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds" often reads like the film school thesis which it is. Words and phrases like "diegetic," "filmic," and the old favorite "mise-en-scene" abound. But you shouldn't let that deter you, even if you aren't of the overly critical, or analytical stock. There is a lot of fascinating stuff in this book, and you're sure to walk away from it with a bigger, more profound appreciation for the films and career of one of the greats in the horror field, Dario Argento. And if you haven't seen all of Argento's films, or if it's been a while, reading this book is a great excuse to catch up on them.
What surprised me most about this book was that it was written by a woman. I didn't realize until I turned the last page of the book and read the "about the author" section that Maitland McDonagh has two X chromosomes. I guess I assumed because of the subject matter--the deliriously violent, at times arguably woman-unfriendly world of Dario Argento's deep red "filmic" nightmares--that a man must have written the book. But what a great perspective is given from the eyes and mind of a woman writing intelligently about horror films. You must go get this book.
Excellent Book With a WEALTH of Knowledge.......2001-07-05
I have learned so much from reading this book.
I purchased it when it first came out (long ago kiddies) but since then have ordered an extra copy.
McDonagh is an excellent writer, very cerebral, very descriptive, and thorough.
She dissects each film bit by bit until you, the reader, have a COMPLETE understanding of Argento's films and the way he thinks.
This is SUCH a small price to pay for such excellent, in-depth research; it is like taking a film course for free, considering how inexpensive the book is.
Take my advice. If you love Argento (and not just because of the gore) read his films.
On the other hand, if you're the type who likes his films cause "the death scenes are cool" PULEAZE don't bother!

McDonagh provides an excellent introduction to Argento's films. I found it very helpful in writing my book on the Poe cinema. Her critiques are insightul and on the mark.

Middle volume which ties together an unusual series.......2006-12-10
This is the middle volume which links together a series of five books. Sharon Green initially started with the intention of writing two individual novels, but the tales grew together in the writing, particularly of this book, into the form of an unusual double trilogy.
Green herself described it in the afterword to the final book as an "odd series" organised into "two crossed trilogies in the form of an X."
The first trilogy tells the story of the sorceress Chalaine and the sorcerer-prince Bariden. This trilogy starts with "The Hidden Realms", and continues as the two stories come together in this book, "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams", which is the middle book of both trilogies. The first trilogy is concluded in the final book of the quintet, the appropriately named "Game's End.
However, another part of the same broader canvass is the story of Princess Alexia and the mercenary captain Tiran d'Iste, both of whom are shapeshifters. Their adventure, which includes both a romance and a quest for a kingdom, starts with "Silver Princess, Golden Knight," and shares this middle book "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams" with the first trilogy. The story of Alexia and Tiran is sort-of concluded in the fourth book in the quintet, "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts". The double titles denote this second trilogy.
The linkages between the two stories are clearest in this central volume, where all four characters work together. It starts with both couples as newlyweds, and continues with their linked quests to become the rightful King and Queen of their own kingdoms.
In the final two books, the stories largely separate again as each couple has to defend their own world against attack by powerful evil magic.
If you are going to read this series, it helps to read each trilogy in order and to read "Game's End" last. Hence the sequence is
1) and 2) "The Hidden Realms" & "Silver Princess, Golden Knight"
(Either can be read first)
3) "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams"
4) "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts"
5) "Game's End"
This quintet of fantasy novels, written between 1993 and 1996, is rather more mainstream than some of the author's earlier works. Sharon Green has put a lot of effort into creating the personalities and magic powers of the heroes and heroines, and some of the other major characters. The plots - in both senses of the word - are also quite intricate.
Rather less effort appears to have been put into creating the worlds where the stories take place, the minor characters or most of the villains, most of whom are fairly two-dimensional and thinly sketched out - to such an extent that some of the places in the stories and quite a few of the characters do not even have names. In places there is good use of humour but there could be rather more.
Overall as fantasy novels go this is average, by which I do not mean to damn the book with faint praise. It's not the best fantasy story you will ever come accross, but it's not the worst either.
The main thing going for this series is that it is such an unusual way to build a story as to make it interesting to see how Sharon Green put it together.
Confusing........2003-10-21
I had a hard time getting through this book. Ms. Green has combined Alexia and Tiran from SILVER PRINCESS, GOLDEN KNIGHT and Chalaine and Bariden from THE HIDDEN REALMS. It was hard enough keeping the shape-shifting couple separate from the magicians, but then they exchanged bodies. These newly married couples were already having marital troubles, and then they started desiring the spouse of the other couple. I just didn't like it. So far, I have liked all the other books by Ms. Green.

I've only been able to read the first book and the third book (which is this one) of the series because they are all out of print. Considering how great they are I'm very suprised. This one is my favourite, the characters seem to have more depth than in the first one and Alexia has been shown to be the equal of Tiran. I loved the fighting sequences especially. Very entertaining!!!

I've got the 1st edition when I was a Clinical Psychology trainee. And now I got this second edition after years of clinical practice. Changes weren't drastic ones, but they were nice one and vital ones.

From a therapist's point of view it was encouraging to find a guide specifically outlining the most recommended and empirically based techniques for OCD. It has already been an invaluable tool in assisting several of my clients, even those who do not suffer from compulsions but just obsessions. It not only provides you with treatment modalities but also addresses issues/concerns from the client's perspective. So far it has been a positive asset to my library.

Very Useful Tool Even For small Budgets.......2006-04-07
The number one thing I love about this book is does not give a cookie cutter approach to party planning. The ideas in the book are edgy, original and very doable. Yes, there are some very large budget ideas in here but any of them can be scaled down for someone hosting a party at their home. The book is very to the point, not wordy and it is really a great tool. Lots of bullets and lists so you can grab what you want to know. The stories about the celebrity parties they threw are meant to inspire you to think out the box when it comes to food, decor and venue.

I loved Nicole Wilde's book! It is very apparent that she is not only very experience but very knowledgeable in working with wolfdogs and her techniques applies to dogs as well. I especially appreciate the positive and down-to-earth approach she takes in tackling everyday situations sometimes associated with owning wolfdogs. In addition, she has a whole section dedicated to nutrition - whether you have a dog or cat! With the recent discoveries of poison in some dog and cat foods, she provides a crucial alternative to feeding packaged foods!

This book is the second by Nicole Wilde on the subject of wolfdogs. I think this one and her first, Living with Wolfdogs, are must-have books for any wolfdog owner. New owners and long-time owners alike will delight in reading the sections on "Principles of Positive Training" (including how-to's), "Dominance Challenges", "Fear Issues" as well as "Enrichment" (great ideas throughout the book), "Veterinary Care" and much, much more.
I strongly suggest that if you are a breeder, or are involved in rescue that you lay your paws on a number of copies of this book to give to your prospective buyers or adopters. Make it part of your educational program :-) Better yet, combine "Wolfdogs A to Z" with the author's other book, "Living with Wolfdogs" for an all around excellent source of practical advice and information.

I understand him better now..........2007-09-26
As a mother of a young boy(5) who is experiencing several of the symptoms described in the book (disliking school, lack of participation, academic difficulties, occasional disruptive behavior, etc), this book has helped me, if nothing else, to be more empathetic, understanding and patient towards him. This in itself is worth a solid recommendation for the book. Our sons need love, support and understanding, despite the aggravation that their behaviour sometimes causes. In a world where teachers and doctors are quick to diagnose ADHD and prescribe drugs, this book also equipped me to have better discussions with doctors and teachers. It does not provide a quick fix, but strong support along the journey.
Highly Recommended - with one fault to note..........2007-04-18
This book has really helped open my eyes and understand more about boys. It is an excellent resource I have read more than once and I have recommended to friends and school teachers as well. It should be mandatory reading for teachers and counslers, and a definite read for all parents with boys. The only downside I found to this book, is the fact that it is written using complex terms and is very lengthy. Therefore, I think this book can be intimidating to the majority of people/teachers/parents. This book would be even more wonderful if it were written, in a simpler version, to reach out to the general masses who need help. It is also sad to note that the majority of health insurances will not cover a PET brain scan in relation to ADD/ADHD test. These companies would rather waste the money/time on pschological reviews and prescriptions, rather than utilize a clear-cut, physically determinable answer such as the scan. It makes one wonder how much doctors/insurance companies get for prescription kick backs and how much they stand to lose if the PET scan is used.
Enlightened - opened my eyes and mind........2007-03-23
Having a daughter as a first born, and she being an almost perfect child, receiving compliments about her from all directions, I thought this boy of mine was - well I was confused. I was attempting different types of disciplinary actions yet it never worked for him, or rather me. Then, having read the book, I see him in a most different light. Learning to accept him as just another boy, and I am sure his teachers had told me that he is just another boy, yet I did not comprehend the idea, until reading this book. Accepting this fact, I now approach my son differently, and he sees me differently, and we enjoy each other's company to a higher level than before. I am thoroughly grateful that I was able to find such a great book that helps me understand and bond closer to my son.
