Book Description
In a breathtaking land of ice and cold, death has come...by fire.
In the lingering chill of the early Alaskan spring, famed "musher" Jessie Arnold confronts the charred remains of a favorite local pub, destroyed by a suspicious blaze that claimed an innocent, unsuspecting life. This lull between racing seasons is meant to be a time of grueling training and conditioning for Jessie and her dogsled team-but instead it has become a time of fear. Because the burning has only begun, and its flames will scar and blister Jessie's world in ways she can barely imagine. And in the wake of more death, her next race will be one for survival -- as she struggles to determine whether a desperate friend is a terrified victim...or a killer.

mediocre.......2006-12-16
I agree with a lot of the other reviews that this book was not up to Sue Henry's standards. Generally I enjoy reading about the dogs and the musher's life, and I did as well in this book. However the story was implausible and I felt the ending was very weak. Almost as if the author just wanted to finish the book and did not really think it out logically.
Fun, Fast, Read.......2006-02-04
If you like dogs, and you like easy, uncomplicated mysteries, and you like strong, single, capable female heroines, you'll like this book. I did--very much. It's my first introduction to Sue Henry's "Alaska Mystery" series, and it certainly won't be the last.
Light on improbable plot but strong on descriptive details (really interesting information on how to mush a dog team, which I found captivating), the story concerns a series of arsons that come to involve heroine Jessie, her cabin, and her good name among her compatriots in the Alaska town in which she lives. It all centers on a former friend named Anne, whom Jessie picks up at the airport, only to regret the reunion the minute they meet.
I found the denoument so confusing that I'm still not sure who did what to whom, but nevertheless, I found the whole reading experience lots of fun--enough to want to try more Sue Henry.
Mush !!.......2006-01-16
Jessie Arnold, champion dog sled racer and dog breeder, is horrified when her favourite watering hols, "Oscar's Other Place", is burned to the ground, but even more so when an unidentified body is found in the ashes. She is even less pleased to be visited by a former neighbour, Anne Holman, who claims to be in hiding from her abusive husband, Greg.Anne is frantic to retrieve something from the burned out remains of their former home, which she claims was burned down by Greg, and pressures Jessie to take her back, by dog sled, to the ruins. She digs up a metal box which contains the bones of a baby who, she says, was murdered by Greg. On returning to town, Anne is confronted by Mike Tatum, an arson investigator who declares Anne to be a fire bug who caused the death of a family. Anne insists that Tatum is obsessed with proving her guilt and is not to be trusted. After Jessie's cabin is also burnes out, the story becomes fairly obvious but the author's descriptions of the Alaskan scenery and the details of long distance dog sledding are excellent. Perhaps readers who have followed Jessie's earlier acventures ( this is book 5)would gain more pleasure than I did from this book, but, to start at this point, it was rather ordinary.
MORE FRIGID ADVENTURES.......2005-10-05
Sue Henry's Jessie Arnold series is wonderful in evincing a feel of the Alaskan wilderness and life in the "slow" lane. Unfortunately, Henry's books while generally entertaining are a little too laid back in their delivery, and Arnold comes across as a less effective heroine than she should be. In BENEATH THE ASHES, Arnold is approached by an old acquaintance to help her dig up something in a cabin where she lived ten years prior, having Arnold as her neighbor. We immediately dislike this friend, Anne, and it isn't too long before several arsons immerse Jessie in a complex plot in which she becomes a main suspect. Henry isn't a master of suspenseful plotting, but her images of the wilderness and her love for the sledding life is evidenced and entertaining.
good book.......2004-11-04
the book beneath the ashes is about jessie arnold being framed for burning down the local pub, her house, and a couple other places that were linked to an arson murder 10 years ago. jessie tries to prove her innocence while looking for her missing friend ann holmon who is also a suspect in the arsons.

A Happy Balance.......2006-01-13
I don't know why C. Dale Brittain's work makes me nostalgic, since the wizard of Yurt series is a product of the past two decades, but there is something about her writing that reminds me of the great fantasy writers of eld. The books are finely grained, detailed with an imaginary pre-crusade Europe, dotted with little kingdoms like Yurt. It is a place where wizardry and the church exist in an uneasy peace.
Daimbert is the royal wizard of tiny Yurt, happily resigned to using his mediocre magical skills to serve the court of King Haimeric. Yurt isn't the kind of place where adventure lurks in every corner, and Daimbert is delighted to help it along. But something is rotten in the Holy Land. The queen's uncle has vanished on a pilgrimage and now Haimeric has resolved to go on a quest to find him. Soon the King, Daimbert, the castle priest Joachim, Dominic, Hugo, and Ascelin, three royal relatives, set out for the east on a pilgrimage, a quest for the missing friend and a deep blue rose.
As they ride over the European countryside the encounter brigands, wizards, and sorcerers (and plenty of nice people as well, but novels aren't made from 'nice'). Expect quite a bit of adventure, a lot of character exposition, and the simple delights of a novel written by someone who thinks that, while hacking and slashing might have to happen, the real meat of a good novel is the way characters interact and experience their world.
It is a shame that these books have never enjoyed the kind of following that keeps them in print, because this kind of writing is very much a thing of the past. Nowadays we are either whisked through an all action adventure, or bogged down in a book that can take weeks to read. Daimbert and friends are thoughtful, interesting people on a quest that take takes a number of twists and turns as the hunt for purple roses and black pearls becomes more complex with each mile.
Daimbert's In Trouble Again!.......2000-12-07
When Daimbert took on the job as the royal wizard of Yurt, he thought the job would be a boring one. Every time Daimbert starts to wish something exciting would happen, he gets more than he bargained for. This time is no exception. The king of Yurt has gotten it into his head that he needs to go on a quest. He's heard rumors of a blue rose being raised in a far away land which is just what he needs to add to his rose garden. The king's nephew wants to find out why his father died. Joachim the priest wishes to make a pilgrimage to the holy land, and to his home. A prince of a nearby principality is seeking an ancient artifact said to have belonged to Solomon. On their journey, Daimbert and his friends run into treachery, intrigue, and powerful black magic, not to mention a huge green djinn. The plots in the book are wonderfully interwoven, and the whole book has a light-hearted, humorous feel to it.
One of the greatest books..........2000-06-13
Dont go buy some boring old book that has no meaning and in the end makes you think twice about the next time you spend your hard earned money. In all, a great book, loaded with all kinds of suprises and just plain adictive.

Very Disappointing.......2007-02-23
Sadly, this was my first, and probably last, graphic novel. I read this book as a requirement for a Master's degree course, and unfortunately, it has completely turned me off from the graphic novel genre.
As for the book itself, the "story" (if you can call it that) revolves around Kevin Matchstick and his magical baseball bat. He and his sidekick Joe Phat spend their time ridding society of "the nasties"; evil-doers who wish to wreak havoc on unsuspecting victims. He uses his baseball bat much like Anakin Skywalker uses a light saber, and with the same effect on the poor victim. Kevin is also searching for the elusive second mage (I could never figure out who this person was).
I was very disappointed with this book. Aside from the artwork, which is very good, the story is very hard to follow. The character development is lacking, too, and I found the text to be extremely difficult to comprehend. This is the first graphic novel I've read, and it will probably be the last. If you're looking to get into the graphic novel genre, choose another book to start with. This one may drive you away like it did me.
Great Art - Lackluster Story.......2005-04-27
I read the original Mage comic back in the 90's and loved it! The art, characters and story were all unforgettable. It seemed like Matt Wagner had forgotten all about his characters though -- so I was ecstatic when he finally started the next chapter! However, after buying 2 issues, I was out. The art is wonderful, but the characters and story have none of the sparkle of the original. The original Mage comic (The Hero Discovered) had a very high level of writing and character development. "The Hero Defined" seems mostly concerned with attracting teenage boys. I found nothing about it that drew me in. It just seemed like Matt was trying way too hard to hit that one particular age-bracket. If you're a hard-core collection completist, you're probably going to get this anyway, but for someone just coming into Mage, I would recommend getting "The Hero Discovered" and ignoring what came after.
Just About The Art.......2003-11-01
I picked up this graphic novel at the library. I'd read some Matt Wagner stuff before when he had done the art for a Batman story and I really liked it. That's why I checked this out. I found the reading very easy and fast going which is good because beyond the art I found little else compelling about this story. Others have liked it because it's not the glorified battle of other superheroes (which I enjoy) but I also enjoy comics that are about the story not just the art and action. I just found the whole story flat. This story centers around a man who fights evil mythical creatures with a magic bat he has. He's led around to the next evil person he needs to fight by a companion who can also fix things. There is definite potential here but I felt like the writer was telling them where to go rather than the story doing that.
Breathtaking Cycle of Graphic Novels.......2003-05-21
Mage the Hero Defined Vol. 1 is the first of a four volume group of graphic novels that Matt Wagner has written as the second part of a proposed trilogy of novels. The first part is Mage the Hero Discovered and the last part will be Mage the Hero Denied.
The series is about Kevin Matchstick who seems to be a modern day incarnation of King Arthur the Pendragon but Matt Wagner, while staying fairly true to the Arthur cycle, weaves in heroic figures from other myths and some autobiographical material. The result is both epic and sweeping and yet intimate and personally compelling. The middle cycle (Mage the hero defined) concerns Kevin Matchstick using his power to defend light and finding out the limits as well as the responsibilites such power represents. This all sounds typical and didactic but Wagner's simple and powerful storytelling ability keeps the whole thing fresh and exciting and fun to read.
Wagner's style for this series is very distinctive. While most superhero sagas feature huge larger than life figures that look too herculean to be even remotely human. Wagner has a looser and softer style that retains an element of the heroic but all his characters are definitely human scaled. He uses deep vivid almost primary colors that stunningly reflect the various actions and moods of the strip. He keeps his compositions simple but powerful reflecting his narrative line. On the whole an amazing achievement and distinguished from most graphic novel work being done by other artists.
Definitely worth hunting down all four parts to the Mage the Hero Defined group of novels and searching out the now out of print Mage the Hero Discovered group. There has been talk of a movie based on Wagner's work which might mean a reprint of these books. It has stalled in development but we can only hope!!

According to author Loren Cordain, modern health and diet problems didn't start with the advent of packaged snack food, but much earlier--back at the dawn of the agricultural age many thousands of years ago. As humans became less nomadic and more dependent on high-carbohydrate diets, we left behind the diet we had evolved with, which is based on low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Sugars, fats, and carbs were rare, if they were present at all, and survival required a steady, if low-key, level of activity.
Cordain's book The Paleo Diet blends medical research with a healthy sprinkle of individual anecdotes, practical tips, and recipes designed to make his suggestions into a sustainable lifestyle, rather than a simple month-long diet; he even includes cooking recommendations and nationwide sources for wild game.
Claims of improving diseases from diabetes to acne to polycystic ovary disease may be a little overstated, but in general the advice seems sound. Can any of us really go wrong by adding lots more vegetables and fruits to our daily regimen? One recommendation on safe tanning with a gradual reduction in sunscreen is surprising and not much detail is provided for safety issues that can accompany increased sun exposure. Still, Cordain's assertions have helped many people, and could provide exactly the changes you've been looking for to improve your health. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Book.......2007-09-28
I have been following the Paleo Diet, and it's cleared up a a lot of unhealthy physical symptoms I was having. I discovered, like others, that I just cannot tolerate grains in any form.
I am also losing weight, PAINLESSLY for the first time in my life.
I wish I had known about this plan years ago. 5 Stars+ from me.
Interesting.......2007-09-15
It is a good review of what has been written before. I learned something from it, which was helpful.
Worthwhile Insights for Athletes, too.......2007-09-05
As a professional ski instructor, speaker, and author, I am almost constantly shocked at what people tend to eat--and the resulting catatonic state that I find so many struggling to overcome. The Paleo Diet helps to illustrate why that is. Basically, we're not eating the way that we are designed to eat, instead giving in to the very modern "convenience" of prepared and manufactured food (from wheat to sugar) and reaping the consequences.
I have long studied the more scientific approaches to diet and learned what works well for me. Dr. Cordain's perspective matches my experience and my observations. You owe it to yourself to learn this side of the options for eating and to consider why you feel the way you do.
What do you have to lose?
Extreme looking diet works remarkably well.......2007-08-29
My doctor recommended this diet to me. When I got the book I didn't think
there would be any way I could adhere to it--it seemed too extreme.
The premise is that foods we ate for thousands of years before the agricultural revolution (meats, vegetables, fruits, and nuts) are the foods that are the healthiest and best suited to us today. The author advises the elimination of all grains and dairy products. What makes it doable are three "Open" meals per week in which the dieter can enjoy foods from the forbidden list. I've found it easier to stay on than I imagined in the short term. I don't know how well someone can adhere to the diet in the long term but the pounds seem to come off quickly in the beginning.
Paleo Diet makes sense..........2007-08-14
This is one of the few diet books that actually make sense to me--it focuses on how our bodies were meant to eat, and what we're genetically programmed to process. There are no magic tricks, no "fat burning miracles," no tricks, no drugs, no 30-days-to-a-new-you, just solid, and (to me) sensible and easy to follow guidelines.
The book emphasizes fresh foods, rather than processed--that makes sense and avoids who knows what chemical additives. Lean meat, healthful oils, fish or seafood, fresh vegetables and fruits--simple. No need to try to interpret complex labels, count calories, carbs, or whatever. Just lean meats, fresh vegetables and fruits.
This is not to say you have to eat all game meats and raw vegetables and fruits to benefit--you can adapt many of your favorite recipes and snacks and even eat out, if you pay attention to what you're ordering.
As the author of The Wild Foods Cookbook for Stephen Greene Press The Wild foods Cookbookin the early 90s, I'm delighted to find how often this book parallels my own research. Again, no need to forage as our ancestors did--with care, we can shop at our local supermarket or farmer's market.
Cordain's not the world's greatest writer, and he tends to repeat his points more than I really enjoy, but the basic tenets are easy to grasp, make sense, and make me, personally, feel very good.
The book has a section of great recipes and appendices, solid research, and personal success stories...this one, at least, doesn't feel like a fad diet.

Good cake book for a low price.......2007-01-11
Although this cake book does not have photographs of all the cakes and usually I abstain from cookbooks that do not have photographs of all of their recipes, I was surprised to find that this is a very good book despite that. I even made a cake the banana nut cake but instead of banana I used pineapple. It was very nice but as the other reviewer said it needed some more sugar.
Tons of great recipes.......2006-09-08
My favorite recipe in this book is the Carrot Pineapple Cake. What I also like is that the recipes respond well to tweeking, therefore you can make a recipe your own. The cakes have that homemade taste to them. There is also some useful info in the front about the different ingredients, which is a must for any serious baker. There are directions for decorating cakes and recipes for sauces, frosting and glazes in the back. Every recipe end with instructions on how to store the finished cake, and contains variations of the original recipe. I am a recent graduate of a professional baking and pastry program, and I can tell you that I use this book for cakes more so than my textbook. I took away one star for the lack of photos. There are some in the middle of the book as well as some illustrations in the decorating section, but I usually like more photos in my books. But don't let that stop you from buying this book. This is my bible for cakes.
NOTE: Taste the batter before you bake, I find that I have to add a little sugar to the recipes.

Book Description
Chinese scholar's stones, variously called viewing stones, spirit stones, respect stones, (gongshi), and even weird rocks (guaishi), have been appreciated and written about in China for more than a millennium. And although acquiring them in the West has become increasingly popular in recent times, most people perceive this hobby as limited to wealthy collectors. This need not be so: appreciating and collecting scholar's stones is popular among people of all means and occupations in China, and should be in the West as well. The continuing popularity of these wonderful objects has in fact meant that many more exciting stone types have become available, and at much more modest prices. All the would-be collector needs is a good eye and the basic information about stone types and characteristics that this book provides. Through descriptions and color photographs, Modern Chinese Scholars' Rocks introduces over 40 stone types, including their mineral compositions, typical colors, hardness on the Mohr scale, and where they are found or quarried. The qualities for which they are valued are explained as are other features for the stone connoisseur to look for. Separate chapters explain how to display stones to their best advantage and how to make display stands. This modest, straightforward, and informative volume will engage readers in the exciting world of appreciating and collecting these natural art objects.
Customer Reviews:
A great introduction and practical guide.......2007-01-12
Kemin Hu is truly one of the experts in this field with a real passion for sharing her knowledge and experience in appreciating scholar's rocks, both traditional and "modern".
Her new book provides many practical insights into rock types in an easy to read style, with a light touch on the broader cultural context of scholar's rocks. For deeper insight into the history, philosophy and aesthetics, I recommend her other books.

Customer Reviews:
Great idea for students.......2007-08-06
The biggest problem about playing with an orchestra is that most of the times you don't have enough time to rehearse with them. This book provides a substantial help, since we can play along with the recorded orchestra and get used to it when going for the real thing. This is something pop and jazz musicians do all the time, but we don't find many classical pieces in this format. Just one little negative point: it doesn't come with the orchestra score.

Book Description
Present-day visual culture partly owes its existence to the print publishers of the eighteenth century. The north Italian Remondini family owned the largest print publishing house in Europe at the time. They broke with tradition by aiming their production mainly at a broad, middle class public, producing in large quantities and cheaply. Their prints reached buyers all over Europe as well as other parts of the world (especially South America). All the material had one common feature: it was geared to the assumed life experiences of the potential buyers. This study offers a detailed analysis of this family's richly varied picture production. Large numbers of unknown prints have been identified with the help of the Remondini catalogues.
Book Description
Muhammad Ali is one of the world’s best-known figures, and this incredible biography delves into precisely why. From his unlikely beginnings as a skinny, young Cassius Clay learning to box at a local gym to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world at the famous “Rumble in the Jungle,” where even the skies let loose with rain right after his victory, Ali has captivated the world. Tonya Bolden’s careful research and elegant telling, paired with R. Gregory Christie’s incredible paintings, make this a book that will inform and inspire readers of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Big Subject well condensed.......2006-09-18
It's hard to distill a complex adult's whole life into a picture book, but it's well done here. Cassius Clay become Ali, losses, recapture of the championships, his defeats, his major life changes are well presented with impressionist art. This could be a good core title to challenge young researchers on how they would condense a person's life into a 32-page picture book, and because there is not one iota of "cute" in this, it would be effectively used in a biographies unit at any grade level. SOmetimes picture book biographies tend toward "sappy" but this one maintains its rhythm and integrity well.
Lord of the ring.......2005-02-18
Controversy dogged the boxer born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., much of it invited. It's all here - the rhyming brags and swagger that earned him headlines and ruffled opponents, his conversion to the Nation of Islam, his refusal to serve in Vietnam and subsequent court battle.
He was either an inspirational symbol of defiance against injustice, or a loudmouth buffoon who overstayed his welcome in the ring, depending on your perspective. Nor does Bolden shy from his pathetic decline from too many blows to the head, leaving a palsied echo of the proud and loud pugilist.
Christie sums up entire bouts in a few expressionistic squiggles, and in the next frame can capture both the champ's grace and grit. The acrylic colors are bold, the brushstrokes bolder, as if any canvass - including the ones Ali fought on - could ever capture a character so much larger than life.
