Book Description
Blind dates give everyone the shivers...with or without a murder attached to them. Jo Tulip is a sassy single woman full of household hints and handy advice for every situation. Her first romantic outing in months is a blind date—okay, the Hall of Fame of Awful Blind Dates—but things go from bad to worse when the date drops dead and Jo finds herself smack in the middle of a murder investigation.
With the help of her best friend, Danny, and faith in God, Jo attempts to solve one exciting mystery while facing another: Why is love always so complicated?

An even better read than the first.......2007-07-07
Blind Dates Can be Murder. Just from the title alone you can tell you're in for a good read. I found the second installment in the Smart Chick Mystery series to be better than the first. Though, the story still drags a bit in the beginning, the pace quickens earlier. Plus Danny is planning on telling Jo that he loves her!! Danny is such a sweet and endearing character; my favorite parts in the story are when he's together with Jo. Even though you're just reading the words- the extent of his love is very obvious, it brings out the sappy smiles. Awww...
The mystery is also a little more developed here than in Trouble with Tulip. Jo has her own household tips website and is answering questions and chronicling her days in her blog. Her agent has decided that it would be good publicity for her to try a dating service and relate her experience to her readers. Her first (and only) blind date turns into a big disaster and a possible murder. Jo, of course, becomes Nancy Drew/Martha Stewart again, using household clues to try and solve the mystery.
Overall a good read; it's hard to put down once you're at the halfway mark. You want to make sure everything works out in the case and if Jo loves Danny too. It ends on a cliffhanger, so make sure to have the final installment, Elementary, Dear Watkins ready and waiting!
I love it!.......2007-06-14
I adore this series by Mindy Starns Clark. I read this whole book in one sitting because I absolutely HAD to see how it ended! Jo and Danny are such lovable characters. Read it!!
Dead Dates Tell No Tales.......2007-04-27
After finally getting over being left at the alter Jo has decided to move on by joining a blind dating service. Her first date isn't at all what she expected him to be and then even worse: he dies during their date! Suddenly Jo finds that she's the target of kidnapping, stalking, and death threats. She has no idea why but clues seem to lead back to her deceased date. Along with best friend Danny (who is now hopelessly in love with Jo) the two set out to find out why Jo is being victimized.
Once again Mindy Starns Clark has written a winner. I absolutely adore Jo, she is one of the best recent female characters I have read. Just like in Trouble With Tulip, you can find household hints sprinkled throughout the book (now in email format!) and which also help to solve the mystery. I'm really glad that Danny was able to talk to Jo, now the ball's in her court. It'll be interesting to see how all that happens. I found the blind dating service to be very interesting since I have never used one before. I was really chilled and frightened while reading this book. Especially near the end, I couldn't put the book down because I feared so much for Jo. It was totally like watching a movie: mystery, action, romance, suspense, drama, characters you hate- such a well developed story line. Actually I really think they should make this series into a TV show, you could learn household tips and be entertained at the same time. Sort of Heloise meets Alias type of deal. This was such an excellent book, I thought it was even better than the first one in the series. And with the cliffhanger at the end of this book, I can't wait to get started on the third which is in my TBR pile. VERY highly recommended.
Cliffhangers Can Be Murder.......2006-12-15
Mindy Starns Clark's Blind Dates Can Be Murder was a fun read. Mindy has a way of putting the reader into the characters' minds--disconcerting when the character is a sociopath.
Also disconcerting is the way she ends this page-turner. Who in their right mind wants a cliff hanger ending to a suspense novel? Sure, a sequel is in the works, but do I have to wait and see where it's going? 'Tain't fair!
I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN........2006-10-15
This book was so good. I can't wait until the next one comes out. I'll have to buy the other series of Clark's. She has me hooked on her books now.

short but sweet.......2005-02-21
This was my first experience with Norton on an individual basis. I was truly impressed with her fluidity and ability to create a world that was believable.
This is a story about Joisan, and her beloved half-breed husband lord who is in search for his true identity and about her deep devotion to him. They are off into unknown lands for different reasons, not knowing they are pawns to a mightier cause. It is unlike any other romance story you are used to becuz' it isn't sappy and overkill, it is just the right amount of emotion and adventure. I LIKE the different view points that Norton used as each charater. You got to feel what they both felt and truly sense the inner battles.
They venture into the Waste and unleash an anciet magic. I really enjoyed that it was short and not too long and drawn out, but now I want to get the next book!!
I highly recommend it. You could probably read it in a week or two(if you're like me with books) and curious for the next book, not becuz' it left you hanging, but becuz' you want more.
Whipped away in Glory.......2000-10-22
This along with thte other two "gryphon" books are of Andre's Best! This is were the whole things coems together! My first introduction to the Witch world was in these books. So here was the real love and the two heros of this book stil have the power to move me with their feelings. This is the Glory of the Witch world and the Real feelings and spirit of the stories!
Beautiful..but lacking.......1999-11-30
A friend recommended that I read this book, citing Norton's beautiful prose. She was right..it is beautiful. Often, throughout the first 100 pages I was struck at how fluid the language was..and the story was interesting too. It was a classic epic fantasy quest..until halfway through the book.
Then it turns into a love story. The reader is subjected to Kerovan's thoughts on Joisan, and Joisan's thoughts on Kerovan. Norton didn't make it any easier on the reader by alternating viewpoints between Joisan and Kerovan. Example: Kerovan is walking, reunites with Joisan, is overcome with emotion, switch to Joisan viewpoint..we go back a few hours and don't come back to the Kerovan scene for another 10-15 pages. I've never liked a writer who holds the reader hostage.
It's a good book. I didn't understand some references because I didn't read the first book, so I recommend starting at the beginning.
An Andre Norton Classic!.......1999-08-01

In this age of do-it-yourself health care (heck, if the doctor only sees you for 10 minutes each visit, what other options are there?), Change Your Brain, Change Your Life fits in perfectly. Filled with "brain prescriptions" (among them cognitive exercises and nutritional advice) that are geared toward readers who've experienced anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, excessive anger or worry, and obsessive behavior, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life milks the mind-body connection for all it's worth.
Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. But he should also be commended for advocating natural remedies, including deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, self-hypnosis, and biofeedback for treating disorders that are so frequently dealt with by prescription only.
Book Description
BRAIN PRESCRIPTIONS THAT REALLY WORK

To Quell Anxiety and Panic:

To Fight Depression:
¸ Learn how to kill ANTs (automatic negative thoughts)
To Curb Anger:

To Conquer Impulsiveness and Learn to Focus:
¸ Develop total focus with the "One-Page Miracle"
To Stop Obsessive Worrying:

Customer Reviews:
Worth Reading.......2007-09-24
After reading this book, I tried some of the prescriptions which seemed to fit me. They do work if you are serious about doing them. Reading this book has made a difference in my emotional health.
"Brain Overclaim Syndrome".......2007-09-05
There is precious little solid science here. Amen would seem to be suffering from "Brain Overclaim Syndrome" -- a term coined by Prof. Stephen J. Morse -- where people read much more into brain imaging than is warrented, simply because they have, well...have impressive images to show their clients.
Actually, it would appear impossible to say much about the behavior of any particular individual based on brain imaging, because the research to date has shown there to be substantial overlap in the results between controls and experimental subjects. Diagnosing by imaging at this point may have more to do with reading tea leaves than it does with science.
Informative, provocative and sometimes controversial..........2007-07-31
I admire Dr. Amen's ability to explain the complex interworkings and relationships between different parts of the brain. I also appreciate his ability to relate these concepts to practical everyday problems and common psychological pathologies such as anxiety, ADD and depression. He even talks about some case study information on relationship dynamics.
While Amen is a controversial figure in some ways, he still has much to stay about keeping your brain healthy and he has the credentials and clinical experience to go along with fact that he has scanned more brains than anyone else. This does not make him infallible, but it certainly makes him an important player in pushing the frontiers of knowledge forward. On the other hand, he seems to have a bias toward SPECT scans that is not fully warranted based on other scientist and clinician's work. It's difficult to reduce the functioning of the brain to an in the moment scan or even multiple scans over time.
Suprisingly, this book is very readable for the average layman and equally fascinating. It has a number of quizzes and checklists for determining the strength of functioning of various areas of the brain and useful supplement suggestions. While this book is about 10 years old, it certainly contains lots of useful information. If you want an updated version of this, then I recommend his other book Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance. This book is aimed less at pathology and more about what you can do to improve and take care of your brain in general. While not brain specific, Andrew Weil's book Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being is a nice compliment to both of these books and focuses on the health of the entire body.
Helpful for Neurofeedback Practioners and Clients.......2007-07-13
I have found this book to be a great resource for me as a neurofeedback clinician, both for my own use and my clients'. It's easy to read, has lots of SPECT images to reference, and provides helpful checklists for various behaviors associated with problems in different brain regions. Dr. Amen is a rarity in the psychiatric profession in that he's open to looking outside the box and being open to various treatment methods beyond simply writing prescriptions. While he does discuss the benefits of medication a lot in this book, he also mentions neurofeedback training several times as well and provides many cognitive behavioral techniques to aid with various issues.
Fascinating Science.......2007-06-09
Most books on this subject are very dry and clinical. Daniel Amen inserts some humor into this very serious subject. I have read articles about Daniel Amen saying he is a quack simply because other professionals have not adopted his mantra that mental health issues are caused by physical problems in the brain. Change Your Brain Change Your Life identifies the component parts of the brain and maladies caused by overactive or under active functioning of the component parts. Dr. Amen prescribes remedies from diet changes to cognitive therapy to psychotropic drug therapy in an informative, thought provoking, easy to read format. This book is an enlightening account of the brain and its functions.
Book Description
What's the restaurant business really like? Expert chefs share their stories, secrets, and recipes for success.
Chefs and restaurateurs are today's most glamorized professions. But for every person who starts their own eatery, thousands more merely dream about it. Whether you are seriously considering making a career out of your passion for the kitchen or you're an armchair foodie, If You Can Stand the Heat is essential reading. This informative and dishy insider's collection of interviews with some of the country's leading chefs and food professionals shows what it takes to make it in the world of food, and helps answer such questions as: What are the first steps in opening up a restaurant? What can I expect if I make a mid-life career change?
Among the many stories here, Edna Lewis, the grand dame of Southern cuisine, talks about the importance of mentoring; Bobby Flay of Mesa Grill and Bolo discusses the chef as entrepreneur; and Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill shows how to pick the perfect spot for a restaurant. Each chef or restaurateur offers a recipe from his or her own personal collection, and numerous sidebars provide essential facts about every aspect of the business. From bad burns to bad luck, from five-star restaurants to corner cafes, these professionals reveal how incredibly difficult, but immensely rewarding, it is to work your way to the top of the food chain.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2006-08-05
If you can stand the heat is a really interesting book that tells you the lives of a few chefs that they invterviewed along with a few recipes. I read that it provided insight into the kitchen and things like that, but I hardly saw that going on. Luckily though, there stories and what they had to say were interesting enough. Recommended for all cooks looking to work in a kitchen.
business and recipes.......2006-07-11
There are any number of books on the market that purport to tell you how to start and run your own restaurant. They tend to make up in enthusiasm what they lack in rigor in depicting a slice of the business world that is, at best, quirkily unpredictable. But If You Can Stand the Heat: Tales from Chefs and Restaurateurs is an exception.
The book is organized around four ingredients, er, themes: "Breaking In and Moving Up," "A Taste of America's Regional Cuisines," "Border Crossing," and "Chef-Owners on the Business of the Business." Because the book is liberally sprinkled throughout with short profiles of chefs' and restaurateurs' experiences, the reader comes away with a good sense of the trials involved. We learn how Anne Kearney, the owner of Peristyle, in New Orleans, struggled to get a grip on monthly expenses. One of her most costly lessons came when she realized that her payroll budget had been based on the previous owner's records, which hadn't included payroll taxes. The result, she discovered, was that her own budget was way out of whack.
The book is full of such stories. And the author also has included resources, ranging from thoughts on projecting an annual budget, to an item on the top four reasons restaurants fail (lack of capital, insufficient experience, poor menu planning, and disagreement among partners).
For an added treat, interspersed among the hands-on advice and profiles of restaurateurs are recipes for the signature dishes of the featured chefs. Kearney offers a recipe for the perfect meatless starter: hand-rolled ravioli with roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, and goat cheese with artichoke brown butter. Mmm.
Standing In the Heat .......2005-03-03
This book is an awesome resource for people who hope to become cooks or chefs. In it you will read about the lives of people who started out doing something they thought they loved and then just decided that they wanted to cook and ended up becoming great at it. Then there is also the stories of people who had an intense desire to cook and had to struggle just to get someone in the culinary indusstry to even look at them. The people in this book either own their own restaurants or are working in the most top quality food establishments there is. It evens gives some of these chefs most favorite recipes. It gives you alot of valuable informaiton from the top schools to attend,to what can shut down a first time restaurant opener's establishment. It's a great book to read and it's guaranteed to lead to great success!
Very Good Overall, but Bogs Down in Places.......2004-05-11
If You Can Stand the Heat is a collection of experiences of some of the best cooks in the country. It is intended primarily for those who might be considering going into the food service industry, but is also fun and informative reading for home cooks. It covers how to get into a kitchen, what education you may need or might find useful, the basics of running the business, and even how to open your own restaurant. It also shows other resources that can be turned to for additional support and research. Each chapter also ends with a sampling of the chapter's featured cook's recipes that you probably will not want to try at home.
A Good Overview.......2002-12-01
I used the excuse of ordering some books for my Dad's Birthday to pick up a few for myself. "If You Can Stand the Heat", (Tales from Chefs & Restaurants) by Dawn Davis is the one I'm reading first.
Written a couple years ago, it's a pretty good overview of what's going on today in food and restaurants. It includes brief but well done interviews with chefs and food industry professionals, and manages to focus on many different aspects of the food business.
The interviews cover a wide range of topics like training, chefs as entreprenuers, restaurant location, mentors, regional cusines and such and are interesting to read as well as informative. The book also includes some recipes following each chapter, and has useful appendices with sources of information about the food business.
Among those interviewed are celebreties like Tony Bourdain, Rick Bayless, Bobby Flay and Thomas Keller but the roster consists mostly of people best known only to the inner circle of foodies.
This would be a very interesting and useful read for somebody new to food literature or thinking of entering the business.
Book Description
The first book to examine the environmental, dietary, and lifestyle-related causes of cancer in pets and to assess the full spectrum of treatments--both alternative and conventional.
• Foreword by Gary Kowalski, author of The Souls of Animals.
• Cancer is the leading killer of cats and dogs, but this book explains that it is often preventable.
• Includes research on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs.

Cancer is now the number one killer of most domestic animals. This fact raises a fearsome specter for those who know how confusing and painful it can be to endure the course of this disease in their pets. Having lost four animal companions to cancer, author Deborah Straw became frustrated by the lack of concrete knowledge about the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer in pets. This thorough and comprehensive guide to every aspect of the disease in animals is the result of her search for answers.
Readers will discover the many environmental, dietetic, and vaccine-related culprits that may cause cancer in pets, and they'll learn preventive measures that can be taken to safeguard their pets' well-being. Should your animal's diagnosis be confirmed, the full spectrum of both conventional and alternative treatments is presented, from chemotherapy and laser surgery to herbal therapy, acupuncture, and touch therapy. Readers will find information about both caring for a sick animal and grieving its loss. Full of knowledge, options, and support, this is an essential resource for protecting your pet.
Customer Reviews:
Good Start, but you'll need to buy additional books.......2003-03-03
I found the book easy to read and full of facts which served as a basis for me to expand my research. It is one of the better books I have read on dog cancer and alternative treatments. A positive point is that the book was not technical; it was easy to understand. It also provided some good references. However, I feel that the book cannot stand on its own as a guide for treatment or selecting alternative treatments and I was disappointed numerous times.
There were also areas where I felt the author should have included more information. For example, she referenced Vitamin C - rather than providing multiple examples of how Vitamin C saved dogs, I would have preferred some guidance on the various types of Vitamin C so I know which one I should purchase? Calcium Ascorbate, Ascorbic Acid, Ester-C, Sodium Ascorbate? What are the differences?
Another area of disappointment was that there was almost nothing on prednisone. Recently in talking to many folks whose dogs have been diagnosed with cancer, they leave the vet's office with prednisone when chemo is rejected as an alternative. The book was not helpful in this area at all. I am no wiser than before I read the book.
Above are just two of many examples where I felt the book did not contain sufficient information.
I began to question the accuracy of information in the book when I came to the section on chiropratics. I am familiar with chiropractics and was disappointed that she used incorrect terminology, did not seem to have her facts correct and referenced negative examples only. If she was not an advocate of chiropractics or was not familiar with the topic, she should have written nothing rather than to print inaccurate information.
I'm glad I bought and read the book; but I'm also glad it was not very expensive because I had to buy other books to fill in the gaps of missing information, as I cited above. I plan recommend the book to friends who have dogs with cancer. Although it is not an outstanding book, it is better than most I have read.
Important Book for all Pet Owners.......2002-02-16
I recommend that all pet owners should read this book in order to do all they can to protect their loved furry ones from preventable cancer. However, I did find that some of the information in the book was more speculative than fact, so it is necessary to do some additional research on some topics before drastically changing your pet's lifestyle.
Why is Cancer Killing Our Pets?: How You Can Protect and Tre.......2001-06-19
I recently discovered my beloved Rottie has cancer and this book helped me learn of the many options out there for treatment and how much of a problem companion animal cancer is becoming. It helped me center myself and get a better idea of the directions I could go. This book also helped me understand what to do from here on out, to help all my companion animals so that they live a healthy life. It explained the importance of a good, not overly processed diet. I am a board member of an animal protection organzation and have had dogs my entire life, and even with that I learned so much more from this book. If you love your animals read this book for them, it could change their lives and yours!!!
A Book That's Needed To Have Been Written for a Long Time.......2001-02-13
Deborah Straw has addressed a problem that has been plaguiging more and more pet owners daily. This well documented book looks carefully at causes, preventions, treatments and very cautiously at cures for the epidemic of cancer which is devastating our pets today. She covers every aspect of the subject and makes her statements credible with references to the many professionals with whom she has consulted. Straw's understanding of this disease and its ramifications is thorough and comprehensive. She deals with traditional as well as non-traditional aspects of prevention and treatment, leaving out nothing. Thereby, she offers the reader a myriad of choices as well as the power to take charge when that dreaded diagnosis is made. As a pet health care professional and an owner of four dogs who have died of cancer, as well as one who has survived the disease, I found Straw's book enlightening and hopeful. It is a book with which every pet owner should be familiar.
The Best Book on Cancer in Pets.......2000-12-30
I've had a cat with cancer for the past 15 months, so I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. This book not only talks about the diease itself, but covers all related topics--causes, nutritional support, insurance, and the loss. I especially like the sections on alternative care, which I believe can be as effective as any conventional treatment. Straw's resources are excellent, too, and she provides lots of fuel for further research. It's the only book of its kind, one you should add to your library even if your pet doesn't have cancer.

Product Description
The work of J. J. Lankes (1884-1960) is regrettably almost forgotten today. This is unfortunate, for in addition to being a certifiable American original, Lankes was a talented artist (arguably the first genuine woodcut artist this country produced), the close friend of poets and writers, and the author of the first reliable and comprehensive book on woodcutting published in North America. This is the first and only volume devoted to his fascinating career, one that highlights and illustrates the variety and the quality of the work he created over forty years. Reading it will be a revelation.
Lankes worked exclusively in the East, and his woodcuts, mostly of scenery and structures, range from northern Vermont to his adopted state, Virginia, with brief excursions into New York and Pennsylvania. Commissioned on a regular basis to illustrate books, he created a number of enduring images, his most famous certainly being the ones used to adorn Robert Frost's poetry. These and the glorious woodcuts he published of Virginia were probably his crowning achievement, but this retrospective contains a complete overview of his work, including his Christmas cards, illustrations of weather sayings, Bucks County stone barns, and his inventive ephemera.
In The Woodcut Art of J. J. Lankes, Welford Dunaway Taylor has painted a rich portrait of a crotchety, unconventional and neglected American artist, and also provided an extensive bibliography of Lankes's published work as well as a collation of his prints. This book, if there is any justice, will restore Lankes s reputation as one of America's foremost graphic artists.
Customer Reviews:
An wonderful book for anyone interested in J.J. Lankes........1999-06-10
Taylor's work is a must for anyone interested in the woodcut print, and especially the work of J.J. Lankes. His biographical sketch of Lankes' life is complete without ponderous detail. The critical summary of his work is also fascinating. But it is the work of Lankes himself, spread liberally throughout the book that gave this reader the greatest delight. I only wish Taylor had included more examples of Lankes' woodcuts! The book itself is a fine example of quality bookmaking. The binding, cover, type face, printing and overall size add to the value.

Book Description
This is the first biography of David J. Brewer, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1889 to 1910.
Prior to rising to the nation’s highest tribunal, Brewer served as a county probate judge, a state district judge, a Kansas State Supreme Court justice, and a federal circuit court judge. He was known not only for his long tenure on the Supreme Court but also for his numerous off-the-bench statements as an orator and writer.
Many of Brewer’s judicial opinions and nonjudicial utterances created controversy, particularly when he confronted the reform issues of his day. The court, then presided over by Chief Justice Melville W. Fuller, has been seen as reactionary, determined to infuse the law with social Darwinism and laissez-faire ideology. Yet, contrary to this assessment of the Fuller Court as a whole, Brewer accepted most of his generation’s reform goals. He championed many forms of social legislation, the regulation of business, the rights of women and minorities, the support of charities, educational reform, and world peace.
Michael J. Brodhead contends that until recently historians have carelessly and inaccurately created a false image of Brewer, partly by citing a small sample of his opinions and public statements as representative of his alleged conservatism. They have also assumed that the disputable decisions of Brewer and his contemporaries were based on ideological predilections and that precedent and recognized legal principles played no role.
During his term, Brewer was the author of such notable court opinions as In re Debs, Muller v. Oregon, and Kansas v. Colorado. He supported property rights, admired honest entrepreneurial activity, and opposed the concentration of power in any form. Brewer favored the individual in all instances, whether that individual was the initiator of a great economic enterprise or a farmer struggling to extend agriculture into the western plains.
