Brought in Dead by Jack Higgins.......2005-09-18
Among one of the best books I have read.I enjoyed it.
Brought In Dead.......2005-08-10
Like all of Higgins other GREAT books, this one follows the same 'genetic' line. Never have I experienced an author who compares to Higgins style. Every book I can get my hands on by Jack I read. I would rate this book with '6 stars' but your limit was 5.
Top Drawer Higgins!.......2005-04-27
Though I've always enjoyed the Higgins novels featuring Sean Dillon & Company it was nice to get away from the IRA type adventures. I really enjoyed this very fast paced exciting police story. Keep them coming Jack!!
A good read........2005-04-06
It's interesting to see Higgins move from spy thrillers to police procedurals, but gadgets and strong, clever good guys haven't been left behind. This is a fun, quick read, perfect for a Sunday afternoon.
Excellent book to Follow.......2004-12-11
This is a good novel. It starts out with the apparent suicide of girl later to be known as Joanna Craig. When the villian is set free. Then the dangerous game of revenge begins. Who will win the battle? It is worth reading to find out.

Book Description
In 1939, as the S.S. PollyAnna sails from Cardiff on yet another tramping voyage, the world is shifting into war. By the time the ship has discharged her coal, Chamberlain has warned Hitler that Britain will stand by Poland—and Poland is invaded on the day she enters the Suez Canal, bound for Calcutta. It’s September 1st, a Friday; on Sunday the 3rd, when Britain declares war, PollyAnna is ploughing south through the Red Sea. The crew has no idea that a fortnight earlier, the German pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee left Wilhemshaven, slipping away into the Atlantic under cover of darkness. Her mission is to seek out and destroy all the British and Allied merchant vessels she can find. Five days out of Cape Town, PollyAnna is westbound for Montevideo, Uruguay—which, as it happens, is just where the Graf Spee is heading.

Customer Reviews:
Confusing!.......2007-08-02
This book suggests only eating foods in proper combinations, a protein, complex carb, vegetable and Essential fat. It is too restictive, for instance to never eat fruit alone is a little hard to swallow. There are times when this is just not possible. So with my banana I'm suppose to try a piece of pork, a rice cake and how about a couple of fish oil capsules?
Real appetizing if not nauseating!
Lifestyle change program.......2007-01-05
This program entails a complete change of lifestyle and achieving good health through a balance of eating right, exercising appropriately and having a balance of natural hormones. It is not a diet plan or weight loss program like other curriculums.
Coming Off Of A Decade Of Low Carbing.......2006-09-26
I have been a low-carber through the Somersizing program for a very long time. My husband was the one really---who wanted to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets. We were quite concerned about gaining weight back at accelerated speeds. (Anyone who has done Atkins knows what I mean by that). We gave the Schwarzbein Principle--The Program one week to see how we felt. We added back whole grains in moderation, potatoes, yams, brown rice and other starches. We also added back more fruits, remembering to eat them in combination with proteins and fats. We both got on the scale this morning. My husband has lost 5 lbs and I have lost 3 lbs. in just one week. This is an extremely balanced approach that we are enjoying immensely.
It Really Works!.......2006-08-16
I've been trying to loose some weight and get healthier for so long. This book was suggested to me by my Dr. I tried it and it really works. I have lost 17 pounds in 2 months, and it wasn't even that tough. It all has to do with watching the type of carbs that you eat and keeping a balance with protein.
For anyone that has had a problem getting to a healthy weight and staying there, I highly suggest this book. Read it and see what you think. The author explains it well and her cookbook is also great for new recipes and suggested foods to enjoy. It really works and you will feel better and become healthier in the process.
Changed My Life.......2006-06-09
This book was the first time I found a structure that would work for me to eat right, destress and get healthy. It works! I have gone from being tired all the time and not being able to exercise to doing moderate exercise and depression has lifted. Have also lost 15 lbs in a little over 2 months. I still can't sleep through the night as she suggests but am working on it.
For anyone who wants to understand our bodies and how to heal them and lose weight I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Food you want to cook always has a story.......2006-03-22
Rob Feenie might be best known as a Canadian chef who beat the Iron Chef Morimoto here in the US but in Canada, he is a celebrity chef who owns the best French restaurant in Vancouver, Lemière (Relais Grourmands & 5 Diamond) and more down-to-earth but still sophisticated, Feenie's, where he brings the recipes in the book to us from. I had been waiting for this book for months. I wasn't disappointed and have become a big fan of Mr. Feenie.
Combination of French sophistication, Asian simplicity, and the finest North American ingredients - this is Mr. Feenie's philosophy and you will find this all over in this book. The ingredients are still accessible, the recipes are easy to follow - one of the things I like in this book is that Mr. Feenie categorizes different aspects of his dishes. For example, Crab Ravioli with Black Truffle Beurre Blanc, he lists "Filling," "Beurre Blanc," and "To Serve" rather than just listing 20 steps of cooking. And the gorgeous photos.
His background is French cooking but this book also gives us the recipes of old North American classics such as the Feenie Weenie (his version of hot dog), Steak & Egg (it makes me really feel like trying next weekend), and Banana Cream Pie.
His passion towards cooking and foods makes this book so special and this tells you "cook what you want to eat" - not only looking good. As he states, this is not only the list of foods he loves - this is also his own collection of stories brining the memories back to him. I simply fell in love with his personaility and his apporoach to foods.
This book will definitely be the one I keep going back when I feel like cooking "good foods" and the one even making a shopping trip more enjoyable. Mr. Feenie will be my most favorite chef among all.
P.S. I really hope that the FoodTV in the US televises his Canadian show really soon!

A document of patience and example.......2007-01-17
This book and the author's work were inspiring to me as a dog owner and trainer of my own dogs. It gave me perspectives and encouragement to use patience. In the descriptions and journals of her trials and progress with Shadow, Dennison outlined usable and applicable formats and plans for reaching troubled dogs and establishing and keeping their trust and loyalty. Most of all, I laud her faith in herself and in Shadow despite any measurable setbacks and lessons.
Review of "Bringing Light to Shadow".......2006-08-17
"Bringing Light to Shadow" is the daily journal of a skillful dog trainer's experiences as she gradually modified the behavior of a human-aggressive Border Collie. She succeeded with this difficult dog because of her understanding and perserverance, and with the help of a wise mentor and several patient and helpful friends. Shadow's story is an inspiration to anyone who has a similar dog and is wrestling with the difficult choice between behavior modification and euthanesia.
must read book for anyone with an interest in training, rescue, or shelter work.......2006-04-13
In my mind, this is the best, most comprehensive book on the market on the subject of rehabilitating a dog who has "baggage."
Why? Because it explains in heartfelt detail everything that can go wrong or right in the process of retraining and does so through personal experience of an expert trainer. As Yogi Berra said: "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is."
It also reveals how we humans we will ride the highs and lows of a journey that is at times filled with joy, hope, and exuberance, and at other times great disappointment and guilt.
In the end, it is also a "how-to" book for everyone who loves a scared dog, and who has the dedication and perseverence required to keep working.
Her mistakes and successes come to life in a diary which tells of a successful achievement.......2005-10-12
Dennison's Bringing Light To Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary provides the diary of a dog trainer who turned an aggressive rescue dog into a good pet. Shadow lashed out at people without warning and was dangerous; Dennison was a pro dog trainer who faced a real challenge with her new Internet acquisition. Her mistakes and successes come to life in a diary which tells of a successful achievement.
Good book, but a bit disturbing at times.......2005-06-09
All in all, this is a pretty inspiring book. As a professional trainer and behavior specialist of 18 years, I probably would have given up on Shadow! The author doesn't and it pays off. She uses positive methods and doesn't try and battle physically with the dog. The only real problem I had with the book and what I found disturbing is that the author constantly tells of Shadow attacking her other dogs which I thought was very unfair to the other dogs. Knowing Shadow isn't safe around other dogs, she continues to allow her non-aggressive dogs to interact with Shadow and he attacks them repeatedly. So, she puts all this focus into rehabilitating Shadow at the expense sometimes of the other dogs she has, something I would never to do my own dogs. Other than that, it's good, but that part may bother you.

Book Description
Democracy and Modernity presents a colloquium of scholars on the present state of democracy in many parts of the globe, in both developed and developing countries. Where does it stand firm, and where is it on shifting ground? What are the conditions necessary for the consolidation of democracy, and what difficulties face those countries where a stable democratic regime is still a hope for the future? How do the political traditions of a country's past affect its ability to maintain democracy in the present? Recent changes in the nature of regimes in many previously non-democratic countries have made these questions all the more timely. The example of other countries that have made the shift from non-democratic or pre-democratic to democratic regimes in the recent past will surely prove relevant to those encountering a similar complex of problems today. Contributions to the volume include those of Seymour Martin Lipset, on conditions of the democratic order and social change; Ralf Dahrendorf, on the European experience; Shlomo Avineri, responding to Lipset and Dahrendorf; Shlomo Ben Ami, on Southern Europe; Carlo Rossetti, on the rule of law; Luis Roniger, on the consolidation of democracy in Southern Europe and Latin America; Myron Weiner, On India; Erik Cohen, on Thailand; Ben-Ami Shillony, on the political tradition of Japan; Naomi Chazan, on Africa; and Metin Heper, on the Turkish case. The Introduction and Concluding Remarks by S.N. Eisenstadt set the individual presentations within the time-frame of global developments since World War II and within the comprehensive context of the political culture of the modern state.

Book Description
Neil Welliver is well-known for his skill at capturing the intimate beauties of the Maine landscape on canvas. His huge oil paintings have been called "among the strongest im modern American art" by critic Robert Hughes. But Welliver's talent as a printmaker is less celebrated. In this book, for the first time, the artist's printsand his processare given the attention they deserve. Welliver's prints, like his paintings, are a blend of rusticity and sophistication.

Sarah Lawrence College professor Komozi Woodard convincingly argues that Amiri Baraka was not only the most original black poet, author, dramatist, and cultural critic to emerge from the 1960s but also that era's most important nexus between the politics and artistic movements. "The serious study of Black Power," he writes, "must begin with an examination of its most important experiments ... specifically, the leadership of Amiri Baraka and the dynamics of black cultural nationalism." Woodard details Baraka's visit to revolutionary Cuba and the influence of Patrice Lumumba on his thinking; the black-arts movement Baraka helped found and the black/Puerto Rican coalitions he forged; his ambitious but flawed housing ventures in Newark, New Jersey; and his heroic efforts to hold together the 1972 National Black Political Convention in Gary, Indiana. Woodard weaves a complex picture detailing the ascendance of a modern cultural icon and the political landscape he helped create. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Poet and playwright Amiri Baraka is best known as one of the African American writers who helped ignite the Black Arts Movement. This book examines Baraka's cultural approach to Black Power politics and explores his role in the phenomenal spread of black nationalism in the urban centers of late-twentieth-century America, including his part in the election of black public officials, his leadership in the Modern Black Convention Movement, and his work in housing and community development.
Komozi Woodard traces Baraka's transformation from poet to political activist, as the rise of the Black Arts Movement pulled him from political obscurity in the Beat circles of Greenwich Village, swept him into the center of the Black Power Movement, and ultimately propelled him into the ranks of black national political leadership. Moving outward from Baraka's personal story, Woodard illuminates the dynamics and remarkable rise of black cultural nationalism with an eye toward the movement's broader context, including the impact of black migrations on urban ethos, the importance of increasing population concentrations of African Americans in the cities, and the effect of the 1965 Voting Rights Act on the nature of black political mobilization.
Customer Reviews:
This is a must read for all interested in politics and race.......1999-08-27
Woodard writes about the relationship of black power, black cultural arts, and the black nationalist movement with LeRoi Jones, later Amiri Baraka, one of its main supporters. ... He concludes that Black America requires an ideological and political arsenal of both nationalism and Marxism. But at no time can the emphasis be purely Marxist or nationalist without doing damage to the black community. In other words, sectarianism is the enemy of black liberation and the fight for equality. This is a must read for all interested in politics and race in the U.S. Recommended for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. -- P. Barton-Kriese, Indiana University East, Choice July/August 1999
The most important book on Black Power Movement.......1999-05-23
Professor Peniel Joseph writes that, "Historian Komozi Woodard's `A Nation Within A Nation' ... stands out as the most important book to be written about the Black Power Movement. `A Nation Within A Nation' is really several books rolled into one. First, it is a well-researched and painstakingly detailed case study of the dramatic consequences of Black Power politics on [the] racial and political dynamics of Newark, New Jersey during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Second, it is a political biography that underscores the significance of Amiri Baraka to the Black Power Movement's rise and eventual decline in American politics. Third, the book explores the transformation of black cultural nationalism during the Black Power era and Baraka's pivotal role in contemporizing black nationalism as an expressive political and cultural vehicle. Finally, it's a study of the divese and complex matrix that produced black political thought and practice during the period; a historical interrogation of the national and international implications of radical anti-colonial discourses that undergirded Black Power politics."
One of the most comprehensive studies of black nationalism........1999-03-08
According to Publishers Weekly, "Woodard examines the role of poet Amiri Baraka's `cultural politics' on Black Power and black nationalism in the 1960s. After a brief overview of the evolution of black nationalism since slavery, he focuses on activities in Northeastern urban centers (Baraka's milieus were Newark, NJ, and, to a lesser extent, New York City). Taking issue with scholars who see cultural nationalism as self-destructive, Woodard finds it "fundamental to the endurance of the Black Revolt from the 1960s into the 1970s." California Senator Tom Hayden, says: "The fascinating story of a struggle that nearly succeeded in creating self-determination in the urban ghetto" And, in Professor Robin D.G. Kelley's assessment, the book "will be one of the most important studies of black urban politics and culture in the postwar period." As far as Professor Michael B. Katz is concerned, it "breaks new ground and revises standard interpretations of the era. I am particularly impressed with the way he has connected political mobilization to movements in the arts, literature, and intellectual life, on the one hand, and to the restructuring of American life, on the other. It's a hardheaded, unflinching analysis, and he tells it well and with great feeling." Finally, Professor John Dittmer found it "Balanced and moving." "It should be required reading ... for all citizens who care about the problems of race and class in urban America. ... quite simply, one of the most important books we have on the black urban experience in the twentieth century ... by one of the leading scholars of the African American experience in this country." The book concludes that there have been five distinct phases in the history of black nationality formation in the U.S. The first phase was the ethnogenesis of African Americans during slavery; that established the social and cultural foundations of Black America. The second was the black nationalism that flowered before the Civil War among free Blacks in the urban North. A third phase resulted from the failure of the Civil War and Reconstruction to guarantee full citizenship for African Americans; under racial oppression and Jim Crow segregation, a subject nation developed in the Black Belt areas of the South. The most vivid example of that phase of nationality formation was the great Kansas Exodus. The fourth phase of black nationality formation resulted from the Great Migration of perhaps 1.5 million African Americans and from the development of large, compact, black concentrations in the ghettos of America; the flowering of that nationalism is seen in the Garvey Movement of the 1920s. And finally, a fifth stage of nationality formation ensued from the migration of 4 million Black Americans form the South between 1940 and 1970 and the development of dozens of "second ghettos," that generated hundreds of urban uprisings during the 1960s; that sense of modern nationality was heralded by the Black Power movement and the politics of Black cultural nationalism.
