Book Description
In
Cabal, master crime writer Michael Dibdin plunges us into a murky world of church spies, secret societies, cover-ups, and mistaken identities.
An apparent suicide in the Vatican may in fact have been a muder conducted by a centuries-old cabal within The Knights of Columbus. A discovery among the medieval manuscripts of the Vatican Library leads to a second death, Zen travels to Milan, where he faces a final, dramatic showdown. Meanwhile, Zen's lover, the tantalizing Tania, is conducting her own covert operations--which could well jeopardize everything Zen has worked for. Richly textured, wickedly entertaining,
Cabal taps the mysterious beauty of Italy in a thriller that challenges our beliefs about love, allegiance, history, and power--and the lengths to which we will go to protect them against the truth.

The mysterious world of the Vatican.......2004-06-08
Third in the Aurelio Zen series.
The first three books in Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series read very much like a trilogy. The cast of regular characters develope throughout, and previous cases are referred to in subsequent books.
I therefore recommend that you read the series in order.
This book is as well-crafted a mystery as its predecessors. This time Zen is working in the neighbourhood of his long term residence (Rome), but there is much to explore in that city, along with Zen. I was particularly engaged by the 'chase' (on foot) sequence through the Forum.
Another great mystery with Aurelio Zen.......2004-05-24
One dark night in November, Prince Ludovico Ruspanti falls a hundred and fifty feet to his death in St Peter's basilica in Rome. But there are a number of questions to be answered: what was he doing in the Vatican? Why was he being followed? Did he fall or was he pushed? The papal authorities contact the Criminalpol and so Inspector Aurelio Zen is put on the case.
As Zen investigated deeper into the mystery of Ruspanti's death, he finds witness after witness strangely silenced by death. Zen soon discovers that he will never crack the case until he has penetrated the most secret of all secret societies - the Cabal.
The combination between an intriguing twistiness of the mystery story and sharply angled perspectives on contemporary Italy is simply superb.
Michael Tudor Barnes's performance in this audio book is quite stunning!
Intrigue Stretching from the Vatican to Milan.......2002-11-09
As poor 50-something Aurelio juggles keeping his life with his new girlfriend, Tania, a secret from his now distressingly mobile mother with the backbiting intrigues that occur on a daily basis at the Criminalpol, he is summoned to the Vatican to assist with the investigation of the murder of a Prince Ludovico Ruspanti, a Knight of Malta, who quite literally tumbled to his death from the basilica's dome. With the tenacity of a pit bull, Zen slowly but surely cuts though the red tape dealings between the separate bureaucracies of the Vatican and Italy, and dodges encounters with the carbaniari, as he lies his way through the riot of events that follow his compliance with the Vatican to allow the Prince's death to be recorded as a suicide. When he unearths the existence of the "Cabal", a secret organization within the Knights of Malta, the snowball of information Zen has gathered begins an enjoyably fast and by no means boring descent into the world of computer hackers, would-be informants encountered during a high-speed train ride and a strange brother and sister duo ensconced in an old and decaying family house in fashionable Milan.
As in the first two Zen novels, Aurelio's gritty acceptance of his world's self-absorbed machinations entitles him to use some less than admirable avenues of manipulation to get to the truth and at the same time make life more comfortable for Zen. The most delightful portions of this installment explores the undercurrent of vulnerabity Zen experiences when he uncovers secret organizations within his own existence--- his mother's world no longer revolves around him, and Tania, busily promoting a mail-order gourmet food business, may be two-timing him. I look forward to Zen's further 'adventures' with his women and compliated life in the Eternal City.
The Man Who Was Giovedì.......2002-06-18
Dibdin's Italy is brilliantly realized -- not just the usual glamor-and-girls depiction of Italy from a million movies and schlock thrillers, but the realities of quotidien middle-class life, especially in the bloated public sector. Ministries operate with half their staff absent and the other half running import-export businesses from their desks on the side. Bribery, apathy, incompetence and venality are rife. Through it all trudges Aurelio Zen, trying to stitch together the pieces of a mystery that begins with a man falling to oblivion onto the centre of Catholicism's universe, and ends with another man doing the same onto Rome's material and commercial center.
Perhaps these, and other, pieces of symbolism are a little heavy; perhaps not. Some of the characters, for sure, seem larger-than-life to the point of cliché: Zen's Rich Friend Who Can Do Anything, for example; the narcissistic "Falco" and the obligatory teenage hacker who exists as a grotesque parody of the archetype. But along the way there's a compelling, fascinating mystery plot that entertains as long as it exists, and, when all the interlinked, implausible conspiracies reach their almost banal, yet entirely satisfying, climax.
For now the tour of Italy is complete........2000-09-25
"Cabal" was the last of the Aurelio Zen mysteries that I had not read. Now that I have, I can state the body of work taken as a whole is great. As in any group of books some are stronger than others, but none will disappoint. About the only complaint I have is that some of the individual works could have been of greater length. Some were perfectly finished in their relatively brief form, but some like "Cabal", could have benefited from having more time to tell their story.
Mr. Dibdin is a great writer, and I have read all but one of his non "Aurelio" books, and they too are worthwhile. I have reviewed them all, so I will minimize general comments here. I read the books out of sequence, and while there were some references to previous books, there was nothing so fundamental that it detracted from whatever book I was reading. I actually started with "Blood Rain" which is the newest of Mr. Dibdin's works.
The series takes place all over Italy, and "Cabal" takes place primarily in Rome with the central event, taking place at The Vatican. In addition to the intrigue that often surrounds stories of this small Country, Mr. Dibdin adds the Knights Of Malta, The Cabal, and centuries old Families of Italy to this mystery. The contemporary world of Italian Fashion, Aurelio girlfriend's moonlighting, and Aurelio's temptations to a darker side when he feels he is loosing his girl, all make for fun reading, although I believe with more time the book could have developed more completely. There was a great deal happening in this book, and it feels as though it was compressed into its final size.
Mr. Dibdin is a great writer, and this series is without qualification reading time well spent. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Two Hundred Years of Hate.......2001-06-26
The crusades have always facinated me. Buy this book if you want to feel what it is like to "walk the walk and talk the talk" of the crusaders. What you will gain from reading this is not only the historical perspective of the 200 years of horrific crusades from a first person viewpoint but the depth of the hate that was generated because of them between people whose religions teach tolerance and love. Reading of the joy felt from killing ones "enemies" and the disdain of fellow crusaders who fall victim to fear in battle is a reading experience one does not forget. This book puts you there. I think it is an excellent choice.

Customer Reviews:
Good for research information.......2007-10-01
Like many other reviewers said this book is biased. The author gives this disclaimer at the beginning and how her purpose for the book is in hoping to revert her readers to her opinions and beliefs. I found it good for offering up research statistics and pros and cons of all interventions during childbirth. It's good to read and read other things and then decide what choices are right for you.
A little over the top, but good info.......2007-09-28
This book provides the other side of the story as it relates to common birth practices in hospitals today. Definitely good information, but you can't take everything at face value. The author takes an emotional (angry) tone, and that emotion seems to have clouded some of her ability to be objective about the facts. Read it, and make up your own mind.
Ought to be on every pregnant woman's reading list early.......2007-09-19
I recommend this to everyone I know who is pregnant - whether or not it's their first child. Women have a right to know what technology can and can not do in order to make "informed choices" about their birthing expectations and experience. (This is the "everywoman's" conterpart to Ms. Goer's more practitioner-oriented *Obstetrical Myths vs. Research Realities,* for any more "tech-y" or medically literate readers.)
Not an "All Approaches to Birth are Equal" Book.......2007-08-12
You will NOT like this book if you're looking for a book that presents all options as being equal. You will not read, "When it comes to giving birth, you could do "A." That's a great choice. Or you could do "B," which is just as good. And then there's "C", and if you choose to give birth that way, well that's as good as "A" or "B"." Do not buy this book if you want all your "options" laid out as perfectly equal and beneficial choices for birth. The author clearly states that she is not "neutral" and that she is no more objective than anyone else about what makes for optimal care.
The author clearly states that she believes that "midwifery care is superior to medical management for low- and moderate-risk pregnant women" and that obstetricians are specialists who should only care for women who have high-risk pregnancies. She claims that her book "establishes that the routine or indiscriminate use of medical tests, procedures, drugs and restrictions - the hallmark of obstetric management - does far more harm than good." This claim she backs up with an amazing amount of studies and research.
This book will cause you to think about all the things you thought were "normal" and "necessary" parts of labor and birth. It will make you question why the huge majority of Western women are cared for by obstetricians and deliver in hospitals, when most of them have healthy pregnancies. And if the author accomplishes her goal, it will give you the ability to decide what is right for you.
You WILL like this book if you believe childbirth to be a fundamentally normal and healthy event in a woman's life, not to be treated as a medical procedure that needs to be "managed." You will like this book if you want to learn how to avoid all unnecessary interventions and to start small when intervention becomes necessary.
You don't need to be planning a homebirth with a midwife in order for this book to be beneficial. If you simply want to be empowered to have birth that is individualized to YOU, where your labor and delivery is respected as a personal experience, and where you have the right to make informed decisions about the procedures you and your baby are subjected to, read this book.
If you want to play a more passive role in your birth and have it "managed" for you by a specialist, don't bother with this book.
Not for a woman who wants a medicated birth.......2007-08-08
This book was very much against hospital births and epidurals. I didn't like that the author assumed every woman would want to birth HER WAY. An epidural birth can still be a very wonderful birth experience. I got to enjoy my medicated VBAC because I was not in any pain and I could concentrate on what I was there to do - push out and birth a baby. I know women who have done birthing both ways and they were successful either way you look at it. You can be a THINKING WOMAN and still have a wonderful epidural or hospital birth. Reading this book is fine if you want a home birth or an unmedicated birth.

Working hard, or hardly working?.......2005-10-05
I, too own the Betty Crocker Cookbook, and I, too, am capable of a simple search & replace string for phrases. It seems to me that the author simply took recipies from established cookbooks, and replaced every instance of the word "butter" with "milk-free margerine", the word "milk" with "milk-free milk substitute", and "cream" with the words "non-dairy richwhip". With a remarkable lack of knowledge about the difference between lactose intolerance and actual non-dairy living, she approaches the reader with what were probably good intentions, but merely comes off as misinformed. This book is fine if you are lactose intolerant. However, if you are truly trying to live diary-free, give it a miss. Also, if you're frugal, just take a pencil to your battered copy of Betty Crocker, and sub out the ingredients yourself. Maybe a publisher will buy your work, too.
Too much margarine!!.......2004-12-18
If you are looking for a dairy-free cookbook that does not rely on the use of margarine, this is NOT the one you should buy!
I was very disappointed to find that a huge number of recipes in this book require the use of margarine. Margarine contains unhealthy hydrogenated trans-fats, and it is extremely bad for you. It is not something I want to be putting into my body, and I am a bit surprised that Ms. Zukin would choose this as a butter substitute.
There are other substitutes (such as unrefined coconut fat) that are much healthier. Unfortunately, I do not have the time or patience to experiment with replacing margarine with coconut fat in so many of her recipes.
I have yet to find a dairy-free cookbook that provides a healthy butter substitute.
great if you love milk, but someone you love can't have it.......2002-09-07
my boyfriend of 2 years is lactose intolerant, and I love milk, cheese, creamy soups, butter, basically everything he CAN'T eat. as we've become more health/money concious, and I've been cooking at home almost every night, this became a dilema.
enter Jane Zukin's book. it's a lactose - intolerance reference guide and a bunch of great recipes in one. the section on hidden sources of lactose and careful label reading was particularly enlightning (who would have thought plain pre-processed bread crumbs had lactose ingredients?), as was the section on fast foods. now I'll be a lot more comfortable eating at Burger King with him. the substitution suggestions are also helpful, and conveniently located in an easy to use table.
but the main thing I love about this book are the recipes! so far they have all been clearly explained, easy to make, and delicious. I love the fact that nutritional information is included with each one (be aware that her portion sizes were a lot smaller then mine, but I DO cook for 3 college boys on a regular basis).
as an example - her vegetable linguine. my boyfriend begs me to add meat when I tell him I'm making it for dinner, so I give in and add shrimp to it. when we sit down to dinner, after all 8 servings are devoured, he says, that was great, and it really didn't need meat at all. first time he's EVER indicated a recipe would be better WITHOUT meat! that alone would put it on my list of things to serve often, even it weren't one of the most fabulous tasting recipes I've ever found.
the only criticism I have is that so many of the recipes rely on "milk - substitute", "soy-cheese-substitute" or "milk-free-margerine". but it does keep me thinking about it as I prepare a complete meal.
definately buy this if you or someone you love is lactose intolerant. it will become one of your most frequently used resources and recipe books.
Not for those with Milk Allergy.......2000-10-03
Ms. Zukin's book is probably an invaluable resource for those who cannot tolerate lactose, but those of us who are allergic to milk protein will find dangerous information in this book.
She lists as "dairy-free" products which clearly contain milk (Wendy's bread sticks contail "skim milk"; their hamburger buns contain "sodium caseinate"). These are not items that have changed over the years; my dairy-allergic son has never been able to eat Wendy's buns, and he's nearly 13 years old.
The recipes are fairly good, though I get irked by reading "milk substitute" in them - I'd rather see the brand name of the product she used (soy milk tastes very different from rice milk, for instance).
With this book, as with every packaged food product, you must read carefully and be certain the food she mentions is safe. You can't take her word for it. The title, therefore, is quite misleading.
I won't buy another book written by this author.
A very thorough book about all aspects of living dairy free.......1999-07-16
As the mother of a three year old daughter with both milk and egg allergies, I found this book was extremely helpful with all aspects of living milk free. It includes sections on infants and children, shopping and eating out as well as supplying addresses for some of the better known fast food chains who will send you updated information on which of their products are dairy free. The recipes are great and even include some that are egg free. I personally used egg replacer(found in health food stores) and a teaspoon of arrowroot(for firmness) in some of her baking recipes and most came out very good. The only problem with including products that are dairy free is that manufactures frequently change recipes and I would not want anyone to buy somethi ng from these lists thinking they are dairy free when they may not still be.

Poison dart frogs (Dendrobates) not treefrogs (hylidae).......2004-11-08
Poison dart frogs ARE NOT TREEFROGS!!
Seems like a good book, just added it to my cart,
I just find people that review a book down are stupid because "duh subject x is supposed to be there"-when it clearly shouldn't.
Love this book.......2004-03-12
This is a great book for a beginner tree frog owner. Unlike other books which spend a lot of time describing all the different species of frogs without any honest-to-goodness practical advice, this book has plenty of both.
This book covers some absolutely necessary basics - how to select a healthy animal, how to diagnose and treat an ill one, how to set up a frog's vivarium, what to feed, and how to breed the frogs. Importantly, it is written for a beginner frog keeper and focuses on species specifically recommended to beginners - green tree frogs, White's tree frogs, white-lipped tree frogs, and red-eyed tree frogs. The general information offered on all the species is really thorough without being overwhelming. Because red-eyed tree frogs, White's tree frogs and white-lipped tree frogs need some specific advice, these species are devoted their own chapters.
The book is well-organized into chapters and includes many black/white and color photographs of frogs and vivariums. A must-have for any frog beginner.
Okay book.......2001-08-22
This is a great book, but it left out the very frog I was interested in. That being poison dart frogs. However, for beginners like me it had great information and led me to believe I should start with a simpler frog anyway!
It's all you need to know!.......2001-06-06
While I was only interested in one frog from this book, the red eyed tree frog, it covered many others as well. This book is extremely helpful in providing both care and breeding tips for your frogs, and it even includes magnificent color photos. I refer to this book as my number one source for tree frog care and would recommend it to anyone.
de Vosjoli KNOWS tree frogs.......2000-06-03
A+! This is the ONLY reference book you need if you have, or are thinking about getting, a tree frog. The book specifically covers the White's tree frog, the white-lipped tree frog, the red-eyed tree frog, and the green tree frog. It deals mainly with caring for your tree frog in captivity. There are lots of black & white pictures dealing with feeding, caring for tadpoles & froglets, breeding, housing/caging, and even "doctoring" your tree frog. There is a small section of color pictures which are very clear and well chosen; however, this is not a colored picture book like so many of my other "general" frog care manuals seem to be. I especially recommend it for information that is specific to the White's tree frog.

This book is an excellent summary of the whole quilt process.......1999-04-18
I found this book by far the best description of the whole process of constructing a quilt I have ever used. It covers the process from choosing a pattern, batt, material and thread, through the preparation for quilting, to the quality of the stitching and the finishing. If you buy only one book on how to actually make a quilt, buy this one.

Book Description
This revised and updated edition will help a new generation of hand quilters to master techniques that will improve both their stitches and their enjoyment of quilting. Easy as 1-2-3, detailed chapters include: A discussion of marking tools and methods; Instructions for assembling the textile sandwich; A dozen detachable quilting practice exercises; Illustrated examples of the quilting stitch; A three-page chart with solutions to help diagnose quilting problems. AUTHORBIO: Patricia J. Morris has completed 25 years as a quilting teacher, workshop presenter, judge, and author. Once a contributor to Quilt World, she produced Quilter's Bookshelf, Queries and Quotes, and writing as Jean Pell, Tools of the Trade and Quilters Today. Morris has judged more than 60 regional and national quilting competitions, and has taught more than 150 workshops throughout the country. REVIEW: Line drawings and clear explanations make all instructions easy to follow. The quilting exercises are logical and straighforward and are sure to help quilters to improve their technique. The information I found the most interesting was on quilting direction, and on planning which lines to quilt when. But the book's full of great tips; all in all, readers will find this book a really complete handbook on every aspect of the actual completion of a quilt.
Customer Reviews:
Look, mom - no pictures!!.......2001-12-13
The first thing you notice in this book is that there is not one single photograph: no quilts, no samples, no pictures of a hand holding a needle. There are plenty of drawings but nothing that shows you what a real hand would look like while quilting and no examples of what the quilting would look like on fabric. I tried to find some indication of when this book originally came out but could not. Some sections seem unchanged from 5-10 years ago, especially those dealing with supplies. There is no mention of batts that are cotton with a polyester glaze on each side or of needle punched batts. No mention is made of basting sprays.
Some recommendations left me amazed. If there really are quilt police, this woman is their commissioner. She suggests basting that is no more than 1/2" long and leaving 6" of backing fabric on each side when basting! She prewashes her fabrics THREE times! Yes, there is some valuable information, including worksheets in the back of the book. However, if this had been my introduction to hand quilting, I would have been too intimidated to begin.
