This time, the two talking cat detectives come to the rescue of some old people at a home and also catch a "cat burglar". When a few of the people at the home are suspicious and scared, Dulcie starts investigating and, as always, manages to get Joe Grey involved too. How they are everywhere to find out what goes on and how they can do surveilance and eavesdropping so much easier than a human are quite entertaining. Always, they keep the police captain jumping with their anonymous phone tips and keep him worried because he suspects the two cats are involved in the crime solving. He won't allow himself to believe such things and that keeps him worried. This is a great job of cat sleuthing and is an interesting book.

As a cat lover and a lover of mystery novels, I'll read anything that combines these two fascinations. This is the first book in the Joe and Dulcie series that I have read. However, the cat sleuth theme is not handled as convincingly here as in stories written by, for example, Lilian Jackson Braun and Rita Mae Brown. While I can suspend disbelief and accept that cats may communicate non-verbally with their owners, or with each other, I was not able to suspend my disbelief and accept that two cats can speak and read English. Nevertheless this is an engaging, rainy-day read.

I really enjoyed this light mystery. Of course, I'm a cat lover... I often chuckled at the voice, the viewpoint and the antics of these cats...who can talk to each other and understand humans very well. There were several mysteries weaving through this book. A good, fast read.

Intriquing whimsical murder mystery solved by feline sleuths.......1998-10-29

I normally do not read mysteries, but the unique slant to this, and previous titles in this wonderful series has me hooked. Owned by 6 cats, I found this book, and its predicesors a "can't put the book down" kind of read. Joe and Dulcie are fabulously developed characters and Dulcie is absolutely adorable. After this last, I wonder when these two will have kittens, and if they will be as intelligent and vocal as their parents.(Hint) Thank you, Shirley R. Murphy, for such wonderful tales. My kind of books they are. Keep them coming.

Very emersive.......2001-09-09

English is not my native language, and the first chapters were very hard for me to get through as I found I didn't understand many of the words. But as I advanced through the book reading became easier and I found myself emerged in the story. Truth is, I couldn't stop reading until I finished it :)
Reading this book really was worth my time and improved my reading skills :) I would recommend reading this book in English because translations usually bite.

Fairly good build up, but too predictable by half........1996-06-18

Andre Norton seems to be turning an old leaf with this one, I get the feeling that it could have been a far more substantial novel than it was, if it had been say a trilogy, with a more involved plot and sub-plots, it could have been Very good. As it is however most of the characters never have the time to start to be people; they're brought in for a scene, and then they vanish into the woodwork again in the rush to get the main plot finished as rapidly as possible. It's a distinct contrast to some of her (Andre Norton's) older books in which minor parts seem to drag on indefinitely. I suspect that this may be the result of an author trying to find a happy middle ground, but she seems to have written this one like a middle-of-the-line folk song, when she should be producing a symphony. If she keeps at it long enough to refine her skill, and makes enough money to be able to ignore her publishers demands for volume and deadlines, she could easily come to rival Eddings in his prime.

If you have to deal or live with controlling, emotionally draining people, then BUY THIS BOOK. The author identifies 5 personality types who are so draining they can be classified as "emotional vampires." He presents psychological concepts simply, clearly, and with humor, and gives practical advice on dealing with emotional vampires. I read the book from cover-to-cover in about 3 days, and may read it again. It's a very useful tool for learning how to deal with draining people, and is a must-have for those who have to deal with emotional vampires on a regular basis.

The book is pretty good in terms of telling you how to protect yourself from being drained dry without telling these people to get out of your face. It doesn't tell you how to be nice to these people. Most examples portray corporate environment.

WOW what a book........2007-05-13

I did not grow up a vegitarian. I grew up enjoying My mother's hearty meals. I have been a vegitarian now for 18 years and have longed for one of those hearty meals. Over the years my wife and I have found resturants on our travels that offered hearty meals but we could never get copies of the recipes. On a recent visit to my brothers he and his wife recommended this book. The first recipe I prepared was a pot pie and was it good! My wife is waiting for me to make another one. We both enjoy researching the recipes and making them. But, we enjoy eating them even more! If you like cooking, but don't like bad surprises then get this book. We have never found a bad recipe.

Delicious but time-consuming recipes.......2007-05-01

I have been a vegetarian for 10 years. In that time, I have collected several vegetarian cookbooks and scoured hundreds of websites, most of which only contain a few recipes that I actually like. The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook is by far the most valuable cookbook I have ever purchased. I continue to try new appetizing, filling recipes that become part of my regular repotoire.

At first I found the cookbook a bit disappointing because it seemed to have so many "exotic" ingredients. I was expecting more home-style American food, wheras this book contains numerous Asian, Indian, etc inspired recipes. But then I tried some of the recipes, and realized their brilliance. This isn't comfort food because it's always the traditional American foods you grew up with, although it does have some recipes like that. It's comfort food because of the filling textures and flavors, that unlike plates of steamed vegetables, leave you satisfied.

I have tried around 30-40 of the recipes in this book, and loved most of them. This is the one cookbook I TRUST is not going to give me flavorless rabbit food. Yes, there is a salad chapter, which I really have not speant that much time on, but the many other recipes are totally worth the price of this book.

The only real flaws are the difficulty of finding some of the ingredients, particularly exotic spices or vegetables that can only be found at an [Insert Ethnicity] grocer or a "well stocked grocery store." At best, I might be able to find them 45 minutes away at the nearest Whole Foods. Soemtimes I just end up substituting, and the results aren't always great.

Also, the recipes are invariably hugely time consuming to make. 2 hours is not uncommon. I wish she'd make a quick vegetarian meat and potatoes book because I just don't have all night on weeknights to spend cooking.

excellent cookbook.......2007-02-13

I bought this book after checking it out of the library and wanting to copy every recipe. Every entree we have tried has been wonderful- especially the sweet potato pot pie. Even my non-vegetarian husband has been wolfing down stuffed bell peppers, cassaroles and (gasp) tofu! Sometimes we just want homey comfort food- and this cookbook offers chapter after chapter of it.

Creative, hearty meals.......2006-07-23

I love this book! Most of the recipes are easy to prepare, and the dishes are different from the typical fare you'll find in the average vegetarian cookbook. (OK.. there is one recipe for hummus...) As other reviewers have pointed out, it often calls for fake meat products, so if you don't care for them, this may not be the book for you. However, if you do enjoy seitan, soy crumbles, faux sausages and the like, this book offers many creative ways to prepare them. My favorite recipes are the Vegetarian Pot Roast (made with seitan and a to-die-for marinade), Tofu and Mushroom Piccata, Red Beans Bourguignon, Maple-Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Plan-Ahead Potato Latkes, Spicy Tofu Po' Boys, and Seitan Cheese Steaks.

This book was difficult to read right after I made the decision to have my best friend put to sleep, so I had to wait for a couple of months. When I did finally pick it up (a gift from a friend), I could feel my chest lose its tightness, and a sense of calm come over me.

There is an incredible sense of guilt associated with making this choice for your friend. This book helped lift this guilt and replace it with a sense of peace.

I Can't Say Enough!.......2001-10-05

This book was extremely helpful! Having to choose death for my best friend of 20 years was incredibly painful and brought feelings of guilt, despair, relief and depression. At the time, I felt I might just be loosing my mind. This book helped me work through all of my feelings. It gave me a peaceful feeling. It let me know, that I was not alone. There are a number of useful references in the back. I really can't recommend this book enough. I was so helped by this book that I have since made it available to my local vets office.

Slow moving, redundant, and written at a low reading level........1998-03-02

The people that weren't lucky enough to locate a copy of this book were the truely lucky ones. It was slow moving and repetitive. When I finished reading the book I was just glad to be done and felt like I had wasted a few hours. There wasn't any real insight into what it was like to grow up Dennis Green or what it was like to be a college coach or professional coach. Anyone who is thinking of reading this book to learn about what is like to be a player or coach in college or the NFL will be disappointed. Read Tim Green's book instead, it was much better!
