Book Description
“In this series about gambling, the main character is a big winner.”
–Janet Maslin, The New York Times
“Bask in Swain’s Las Vegas without having to set foot in the place and risk being skinned alive.”
–The Washington Post Book World
A blind poker player named Skip DeMarco is scamming the world’s largest poker tournament in Las Vegas, and cheating-expert Tony Valentine and his son, Gerry, have been hired to find out how. DeMarco is tied to some dangerously desperate characters who will go to extremes–even cold-blooded murder–to ensure that the obnoxious DeMarco wins big.
While Gerry flies to Atlantic City to suss out DeMarco’s secret, Valentine stays in Vegas and teams up with an aging grifter named Rufus Steele, who has his own score to settle with DeMarco. On opposite sides of a deadly game, father and son work their way through a colorful landscape of conmen and hitmen. Together, they will have to prove there’s more to any game of chance than meets the eye.
Featuring insider tips for catching poker cheats, as well as a glossary of card hustler terms!

More flaws.......2007-08-20
As a non-player, I didn't catch the playing mistakes, but there are other flaws -- Swain was trying to write too much to quickly, I think.
Note, on page 81, he has the doctor attending to Detective Davis saying, "The human body has a hundred quarts of blood. Eddie lost a tiny fraction of that. He'll be fine. Trust me."
I think it's more like 5.5 quarts.
Also, I think he changed the color of Gloria's eyes between "Deadman's Poker" and "Deadman's Bluff."
Then, there are typos not caught, etc. These are things I didn't notice in his earlier books. That doesn't mean they aren't there; just that I didn't catch them.
Having said that, I'm still looking forward to his next book, "Jackpot."
The rise of Gerry.......2007-08-06
Tony Valentine is getting a bit long in the tooth. He is over sixty now and can't bounce back from a beating with quite the speed of a younger guy.
So if you are James Swain and you understand that your cerebral hero must also be a man of action, you have to bring on someone to help Tony. And so we have Tony's son Gerry. His rough edges are sandpapered to a new smoothness. His flaws are prologue, but his present is blemish-free. tony doesn't worry anymore if Gerry's former profession-bookmaking-will get him killed. He worries if the people who want to kill Tony will kill Gerry for being just like Tony.
And this is the major flaw in this edition. The grifters are there, where they belong on the casino floors, and the scammers and the politician dance their symbiotic mating call. But it is Gerry not Tony who emerges at the end.
Just maybe, Swain is right. Tony needs someone to take the beatings. Or just maybe some editor has becided this for Swain. Time will tell if this is a good move. I am keeping my money on Tony though.
If you didn't see this sequel coming, Rufus wants you.......2007-05-28
Maybe it is a lack of focus. Deadman's Poker left us all awaiting the revelation. You could pretty much guess what it would be : although, the specific element and technology awaited revelation. This novel takes up where Poker left off: the multi-million dollar poker tournament in Las Vegas. Same characters, same con, a few more twists. Strangly enough, in this sequel it is son Gerry who solves this question and his actions in Atlantic City are more in line with those of his father in the previous "Grift" novels. The reasoning concerning hats and tailoring is a fine piece of logic. (By the way, the wearing of ball caps vs the original dress code in Atlantic City casinos is cleverly introduced in Tony's lifetime wardrobe of black jackets.) Meanwhile Tony is in Vegas at a poker tournament attempting to solve card cheating while accompanied by poker player and aging con-man Rufus Steele. Rufus reminds me of my father once telling me that if someone bets he can make a barstool stand on a bar and sing Dixie, "Don't take that bet!" And this is the problem, a good part of this novel is dedicated to Rufus making bets which he wins by strict construction of the language and the comic nature thereof. The half-million dollar bets stretch the belief in anyone taking such "sure thing" wagers. Meanwhile, Swain dedicates print space to explaining scamsters' cant: "Brush off," "mucker," "Who shot Joe," etc. When he does get back to Tony solving the main puzzle it all seems a bit anti-climactic. All in all I think these two poker tournament novels are the weaker works in the set, but after all there's the TV phenomenon, and I guess some fans of Texas Hold em enjoy the background.
Excellent.......2007-01-12
James Swain hit it right again with this two part novel. Filled with humor and insight into the dark side of wagering this is a book you won't want to miss.
Split Pot.......2006-12-24
Though there is a solid string of mostly 5-star reviews that contradict my opinion, I found James Swain a bit off his game in "Deadman's Bluff". This is by no means a bad novel; rather, Swain's "grift sense" is beginning to feel just a bit formulaic and a little tired.
As in all of Swain's novels, retired Atlantic City casino cop Tony Valentine is an unusual and refreshing hero. Swain's real-life experience and wry humor keep all of his stories moving through a banter of cheats and scams and the colorful characters who perpetrate them, building a convincing case for staying away from the casinos where Swain - and his surrogate Valentine - have spent most of their lives. Swain is no fan of legalized gambling and it's impact on Atlantic City - a passion he unloads without apology in this tale of mobsters and con men told in parallel lines between Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The venue is the world's largest poker tournament with a $10M prize that Valentine believes is being stolen "blind" by a player with strong connections to the mob. Teamed up with Rufus Steele, an old grifter whose clever cons are the heart of the story, Valentine cracks an elusive cheating scheme in Vegas while his once wayward son Gerry chases a connected caper in Atlantic City. But strip away the side stories and filler and you're left with bad guys are simply not that threatening and a thin plot leading to an implausible conclusion. In short, while not is best, a fun read nonetheless, definitely up to passing some time on long plane ride or a lazy afternoon.

Book Description
A book for anyone who has ever been owned by a cat... It's a cat's life for Fluffy and PKP until their two-feet companions have to take a JOB out of the home. Gone are the days of snacks on demand and Quality Time petting and purring. Instead, Fluffy is left at the mercy of her psychotically aggressive sister, PKP (that's Princess KILLER Pinknose, to you!) while Dana and Colin work as wage slaves. It won't do! Fortunately for Fluffy, when Dana tries to introduce Colin to the Internet, Inspiration-with-a-capital-I strikes. Fluffy takes matters into her own capable paws, and before you can say "dogs are stupid" the two felines are racing along in the fast lane of the Information Superhighway. Well, technology is a great thing, but the Superhighway still has plenty of potholes. From the difficulties of reining in PKP's killer instincts ("What do you mean insider information is illegal?") to the Pizza Problem, Fluffy has her paws full as the two cats navigate their way toward complete financial freedom for their two-feet pals.

PKP and Fluffy Rock!!!.......2004-02-07
Whatever you do, do NOT read this book aloud. It has definitely given our little four-foots ideas!
This book is compelling, entertaining, and WAAAY too close to reality. It's a fun ride from start to finish, and we were sad to see it end. So we are very much looking forward to the sequel, Prey-Part Politics. (We'd vote for PKP.)
This is a fine addition to anyone's library, but it's an absolute must-have for anyone with four-foots in their lives.
3.5 stars: Short, clever and fun.......2003-11-11
This one is pure wish-fulfillment fantasy (but fun) -- a struggling writer and her musician-husband are saved from wage-slavery by Fluffy & PKP [note 1], their Web-savvy, entrepeneurial pets. It's a pretty slight idea to support a novel, but it's short, clever, and has a bravura finish. Recommended, especially for struggling artists.
Special kudos to Ed Cox for the cover art -- do enlarge the cover scan, above!
PS: when the book gets slow, you may want to skim ahead to where the cats order a pizza. Double anchovies, extra ham, no sauce.

Note 1) --that's Princess Killer Pinknose...
Happy reading--

Cats in cahoots.......2003-07-07
A fellow cat-person gave this to me, but I put off reading it for months, fearing it would be too cutesy (actually is a touch heavy on the italics-for-emphasis, thus the 4 rather than 5 stars)...well, last night I finally opened it, and read it in one sitting, laughing all the way.
Beth Hilgartner has captured perfectly the way multiple cats conspire to do the things that one could not accomplish alone. While cat-lovers in general would love this book, those who live in a multi-cat household would especially enjoy the collaborative techniques of the feline sisters who, while sparring all the while on a personal level, bring off a caper brilliantly. And notice, too, that the bossy, overbearing Princess is eventually gotten the better of by her cyber-empowered sister. Also delightful is that the cats' keyboarding skills are never discovered by the humans, which would be the more expected end of such a tale.
Is a sequel in the offing, perhaps...?
Laughed so much I had tears in my eyes.......2003-05-03
What a great wonderful pair Beth Hilgartner has invented for this title. Fluffy and PKP are quite the epitomy of cats and any catlover can relate to their actions and actually wonder while giving their furkids an extra look or two.
When their two-feet companions are forced to return to work due to money problems PKP & Fluffy decide they aren't getting the treatment they had signed up for in this household. Dana, a writer & Colin a musician still care for them, they just aren't around enough to answer to all their whims. After watching Dana show Colin how to operate the laptop, Fluffy who has been watching every move decides it would be a great diversion. That's where the "Master Plan" gets it's start.
The two begin trading in the stock market and then in futures with some hillarious results. The team keeps going and going and they take you right along on their adventures as they try to never get caught with their paws on the trackball.
Would be a delightful read for young teens or as a read-aloud book to younger children.
Smart & Funny - a must read book.......2001-12-04
Cats in Cyberspace is a gem. And I don't even care for cats.
In much the same way as Harry Potter, this book tackles improbable events in a manner that makes them seem completely commonplace, and does so with grace and humor. The wordplay is extraordinary and avid National Public Radio fans will pick up several inside jokes that make it an even better read.
I picked this book up at the bookstore entirely by accident. I started reading it right there and then, and finished it a couple days later. Gave it to another friend who basically read it straight through was well.
While short, the book is equally capable of being read by adults or sophisticated teens.
5 enthusiastic stars!

If you have 30-plus pounds to lose, Jorge Cruise--fitness trainer to millions via his Web site, media appearances, and best-selling 8 Minutes in the Morning--promises success with this 28-day program. First, stop sabotaging yourself: (1) "Accept yourself whatever your size" and (2) "Eliminate emotional eating by healing your hungry heart." Aim for a healthy, realistic weight. "Some people are at their best and healthiest weight at size 12, 16, or 24," he writes. Cruise describes how to stop using food to numb pain--instead, seek out nurturing friendships to overcome emotional eating. He echoes the "8 minute" theme of his first book, emphasizing emotional success as well as exercising and eating right. His system of "Cruise Moves"--an easy, 8-minute, muscle-strengthening program--is less vigorous than in his earlier book and is easier on knees and backs, and it requires no equipment. The "Cruise Down Plate" eating plan is a simple way to eat proper portions of nutritious foods without counting calories or eliminating favorites. This motivational, practical book looks slick--full-color on glossy paper--and is a workbook for getting started. Cruise's style is chatty and personal, with anecdotes and photos of people who lost 30 to 75 pounds and are happy with their bodies. Recommended for people willing to change their attitudes as well as their weight. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
about food, not exercise. .......2007-05-14
even if you are under a time constraint, if you have beem exercising for a while this book will do nothing for you. I must admit I haven't even tried the book exercises in the book even once, but I knew that doing the exercises in the book, would not make me feel as though I've exercised. If you don't have time to exercise, but you do exercise regularly, and want to get your heart rate up, get the 8 minute tae bo workout.
For obese people, or someone who likes to stretch and take it really easy, this book is for you. But its more to do with eating, that actual exercising.
very basic, but good food plan.......2007-02-06
I need to lose 40 pounds so I ordered 3 Hour Diet and this book. The other book was good for me. This one is for someone who has never exercised and doesn't really want to exercise and just wants guidelines on how to eat. It does have high quality laminated, plasticky pages, (not newsprint) and that was nice. You can almost use it as a coffee table book. It also goes on endlessly about getting a support system of phone call friends, email friends, and just friends period to alert that you are undergoing this new plan and need help. I, for one can't do that, so I knew this was not the book for me. I was lucky to get my husband to not roll his eyes when he saw I was yet again trying something new.
Not bad, but not for me........2006-09-27
If you are completely desperate and need something really basic to follow, this is a good book. I'm overweight but these exercises were just too easy and I didn't feel challenged enough. I opted to start weight watchers and use some exercise videos instead. I did enjoy the book and it is very motivational if you want to start fresh.
Nope not this one ............2006-09-15
I was disappointed with this book. He has his picture on every other page, literally. The numbering of chapters is confusing. I truely have gotten much more out of "Strong Women Stay Slim" by Miriam Nelson, which I got from the library, and now have purchased. I would suggest taking a look at Jorge's somewhere before making your purchase~ (do as I say, not as I do LOL) "Strong Women" just seemed so much simpler, and the drawings of the exercises are pleasant and clear. Often times I don't want to do the exercises, then I think "well, I'll just do the first one" and before I know it I've done them all and am feeling better. In fact, I have now ordered Nelson's book on arthritis. Note: There are only 6 basic exercises plus stretching in Nelson's work, so it certainly doesn't take much longer than Jorge's "8 Minutes."
Not worth the money.......2006-09-08
I bought this book with high hopes having read the reviews here on Amazon but was sorely dissapointed with the book.
Having read it cover to cover and nearly becoming comatose from doing so I have to say its not worth the money.
The main reasons for saying this are:
1. It takes forever to get anywhere - I was half way through the book before anything diet and exercise related was brought up.
2. The first half of the book deals with getting in touch with your feelings. He talks a lot about learning to accept your body and miraculously you'll discover a way to lose weight. My arguement with that is if I hadn't accepted that I need to lose weight then why on earth would I be reading the book in the first place?
3. His style of writing felt condescending towards the reader, I felt like I was being told that I was a special little girl who just needed guidance in a big bad world.
4. The support network that he suggests signing up to on his website costs money from what I could tell by looking at the site. I don't know if I was reading the information on the site incorrectly - which now deals with his "new" diet anyway.
5. Having tried out the exercises in the book and followed the very basic diets plans (the kind of thing I learnt about basic food types, carbs, fats, proteins when in grade school) I've not felt any different or lost any weight. The exercises seems to be so low impact that I would have to do them constantly for several hours to work up any kind of sweat or improve my fitness/weight loss.
6. The title of the book is misleading. While yes, the exercises only take 8 minutes to do he forgets to mention the time for warming up/stretching and the writing and notes that you're supposed to make to get in touch with your inner whatever it is you're trying to reach.
Overall I felt that this book was definately not worth the money. I'd rather pay for something that told me something useful within the first half of the book. However I would say that he does provide some interesting information on the metabolism.
In fact I think I've burnt more calories and lost more weight by typing this review than I lost while following the book/plan for 5 weeks.
In short, don't bother with this diet plan.

Award-winning inns and b&b's share recipes you'll love.......2006-09-17
This book features recipes from the Dairy Hollow Inn. Well-known food writer and innkeeper Crescent Dragonwagon puts in the soup and bread recipes that won her inn the "Uncle Ben's" award, a prize for excellence in small inn cuisine. She shares her spotlight with other inns from around the US.
Right now, as I am writing this review, I am sipping her New England Corn Chowder, which is a corn-squash chowder that can be made with vegetarian ingredients or chicken broth. I tried both versions; right now the base is a golden vegetable broth from a tetra pak but you can use her recipe for vegetable stock. The soup is sweet and spicy and I served it to guests and nothing was left; had to make a second batch. The soup recipes here are all winners. There is a vegetable soup base that can become minestrone or what-have-you, and many other fine recipes featuring vegetables. There is also a section on southern greens.
The breads are everything from a raisin pumpernickel with a secret (chocolate chips) to oatmeal molasses and baps, Scottish soft white rolls.
If you can't find a soup in here you like, you are hard to please--or you don't like soup. Ms. Dragonwagon's commentaries on the inn are fun reading so this is a book you can peruse even if you aren't stirring up something in your kitchen. I use this book almost everytime I entertain for casual affairs; soup and bread are always welcome and easy to serve and enjoy.
An Excellent Cookbook.......2006-03-06
We've only owned this cookbook for a short time, but already it is one of our favorites. The author includes background on each recipe in an informal style that makes the reader feel like a good friend being given an enthusiastic recipe tip. In addition, the book includes a large amount of useful information from how to deal with an artichoke, to various soup garnishes and how to work with yeast. It's the recipes that shine, however.
We started with the Wintery Chicken and Pasta Soup--delicious. Then I made the Rabbit Hill Inn Oatmeal-Molasses bread--an outstanding bread my husband wants me to make again. The big winner was A Salad for Fall which we just couldn't get enough of. The combination of flavors is as close to perfect as you can get. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves good food and is willing to spend a little time in preparation.
As I write this, one of the bean soups is simmering on the stove. Bon Appetit!
One of the Best.......2006-02-24
This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. Every soup I have made has been either very good, excellent or superb. It is engagingly written and easy to use. Highly recommended.
Idiot's Guide to Super Soups!.......2005-04-04
I am a terrible cook, but for ten years I have astonished my wife and made some very impressive soups from the recipes in this collection. These soups are better than anything I have ever had in a restaurant (I've never been to Crescent's B&B, however). Warning - you may never be capable of opening a can of soup once your tastebuds have been altered by this cookbook. I've got to try her Veggie Cookbook!
Good to the last spoonful!.......2004-03-25
Crescent Dragonwagon's Soup and Bread has kept my family fed in style (with never a complaint from the most finicky of eaters). My local supermarket is decent (but not a gourmet mecca) and I groan when I open a cookbook to find the recipes made entirely of exotic and expensive ingredients. (After all that money and effort, you might as well have gone to the author's restaurant and plonked down your plastic.) Crescent, however, can turn simple ingredients into a feast. I turn to this book when I have "nothing" in the house for dinner and don't have time for a supermarket run. It always amazes me that I can get results like this with a relatively small effort. Her stories of Dairy Hollow House give each dish an "atmosphere." Her Gumbo Zeb recipe is the best gumbo I have ever had, and this is from a girl who spent years in Louisiana drowning in many incredible bowls of it. My husband inadvertedly renamed the recipe when he was raving about the dish and I told him it was by Crescent Dragonwagon. At our house, it's called "Green Dragon" Gumbo. It's brilliant. (Make it and you'll know what I mean.)

Customer Reviews:
Way too technical.......2006-05-11
This book was thoroughly disappointing. Provided OK information, but was entirely too technical in its approach. If you do not have a Ph.D. in biology then do not bother with this book, you will not understand it.
compact reef guide.......2003-11-18
It should be rated at 5 stars but I give only 4 stars because of its technical nature and my beginner's comprehension. After that, it is a compact guide full of useful, hands-on info that helps the hobbyist create their own ideal aquarium environment.
No common name references.......2002-03-23
Don't get me wrong, this book is good, however... while reading the book, it uses mostly the scientific names for everything. It would be nice if after the scientific name, it has a common name in parenthesis, you know, using the names the fish stores use. Other than that, it is a decent book.
Five stars?.......2001-03-27
Yes, 5 stars! Pound for pound (and dollar for dollar) this is one of the best books on marine reef keeping you can buy.
I own several reef and aquarium books. They range from the brilliant, to the not-so-swift-waste-of-money types. The "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein ranks waaaay up the list, kept from the top only because of its brevity.
This book touches on a LOT of topics, and it covers them in enough detail to really help you understand and apply what you need to keep your reef (or any aquarium) running well. Due to its (somewhat) small size, it does not cover topics in great detail. Depending on what you want, that may or may not be a good thing. There is however, enough information, written in plain English, for any aquarium keeper--from rank beginner, to the Old Man in the Sea--to learn something new.
No, this book doesn't contain the depth of information that one of those $80 marine reef books does. But it contains a wealth of information and will send you well on your way to starting up a reef or maintaining your current reef. Even if you're just looking for an interesting read, you can't go wrong with the "Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook" by Robert J. Goldstein.
Good reference.......2001-01-17
I like the pictures & the info is good for a reef beginner like me. I've had freshwater tanks for years, so the basic salt intro was what I needed & this fits the bill.
Book Description
Any reef aquarium that contains less than 15 gallons of water is considered a nano-reef aquarium. These tiny ecosystems are almost as popular in the fishkeeping community as full-size marine aquarium setups, and with the proper information and tools, they can be set up and maintained by aquarists at any level of the hobby.
The wide range of topics covered in this guide include the importance of water quality and tips on maintaining stable water parameters; components of a nano-reef and how to choose the appropriate aquarium, lighting, and accessories for a tank; which fish and invertebrates are best for these types of tanks; and much, much more.
For a reef enthusiast looking for a new challenge or any up-and-coming fish hobbyist, nano-reef aquarium are a stunningly beautiful option. The Nano-Reef Handbook contains all the information necessary to get started.
Customer Reviews:
Not what you might expect.......2007-10-10
The seller that I bought this book was great..no problem there. However this was not the book I thought it would be. While lacking in some major areas the book seemed to "dumb itself down" for lack of better terms. People that are researching reef aquariums would be much better off if information was dumbed down for them. This causes confusion in general. The book while helpful on some points lacked any real "meat" to say the least. If I was going on a point system 1-5 I'd rate it about a 2.
helpfull information.......2007-05-21
all the information that yo need to a succesfull start with nano reef's
eh.......2007-03-06
this book was only helpful to me when selecting which fish I would put in my nano reef aquarium. other than that it was a waste of time. way too much unnecessary information.
A comprehensive, "user friendly" instructional guide to creating and maintaining a nano-reef aquarium .......2006-07-10
A "nano-reef" is an aquarium that is less than 15 gallons in total volume and houses reef organisms -- and especially suited for a home, office, or classroom. An aquarium hobbyist for more than 25 years, Christopher Brightwell draws upon his experience and expertise in The Nano-Reef Handbook to provide aspiring aquarium developers with a comprehensive, "user friendly" instructional guide to creating and maintaining their nano-reef aquarium including such factors as filtration, lighting, temperature control, water chemistry, and identifying more than thirty of the most highly recommended fishes and invertebrates for placement into their nano-reef aquarium. Whether a novice or seasoned aquarium enthusiast, The Nano-Reef Handbook will prove to be of exceptional interest, especially with respect to increasing the probability of success through suggested routine maintenance and sensible stock levels, creating a balanced system throughout the entire nano-reef habitat. Anyone considering establishing their own aquarium nano-reef should give Christopher Brightwell's strongly recommended The Nano-Reef Handbook a very careful reading.
This book is excellent!.......2006-04-01
This book is excellent! If you plan on setting up a tank under 15 gallons it'll really help explain who and what specimens of fish and or coral are compatible in such a small space.
Book Description
A wonderful collection of linked short stories by this enormously popular bestselling author.
Here are six wonderful short stories about the members of Mr. Speed’s primary school class where lots of the children have something to worry about. From a new stepmom, to coping with math, everyone has their own private concerns and it’s sometimes difficult to discuss them -- even when you need advice. So Mr. Speed sets up the Worry Website on the classroom computer. Anybody in the class can anonymously enter their worry and anyone else can type in advice to help out. Also included is a prize-winning story by a 12-year-old fan who entered a competition to write a companion story to Jacqueline’s.

It is not a terrible book!.......2004-12-23
I noted with apprehension that the previous reviewer condemned this book, saying that the book has no point to the plot.
I would like to redeem the book's worth by highlighting the following points:
1. Each chapter of this book starts off with a 'worry' entered by one of Mr Speed's students. And it is this 'worry', that the entire chapter is based on. The chapter does not take the form of a diary entry, so it is different from books like Anne Frank's diary or Dear Mr Henshaw. It is instead narrative in nature and takes on a first-person perspective from the point of view of the student entering the worry. Hence, it is conversational and 'spoken' in the manner that children of that age would speak in, resulting in many humorous/depressed observations and happenings.
2. From each chapter, you don't just get to know more about the student who entered the worry, you also find out about the other students in the class and other outside characters as well, through the various dialogues and observations from the student.
3. Since information is provided in snippets about various characters from each chapter, there is a great sense of continuity throughout the story. For example, in the first chapter when Holly enters her worry, she mentions characters like Greg and Claire etc. Then in the second chapter, Greg enters his worry, and his character development carries on from where it was left off in chapter 1, expanding the reader's perception of Greg's life. In the process, Greg would also bring the reader to view snippets of other characters, and the same process goes on.
To put it simply, this book is like a collection of short stories of the lives of some of the students in Mr Speed's class. However, it is unlike a usual short stories collection, in the sense that it links all these short stories together - the glue being Mr Speed himself, who tends to appear at the end of every chapter to apply some level of resolution to the short story.
Kudos to Ms Wilson for her skill in writing!

Pearls Indeed!.......2001-01-27
Whether you live in the country, plan to move, or simply dream about - this is the book you'll want to own. Tips on living smarter, spending less and making it all last longer make this book a pearl indeed. It wasn't all that long ago that people knew how to live without every modern convenience. Country wisdom gleened from many sources is delivered in this first rate edition. Some ideas are practical, common sense items, some you'd never think of. I'm keeping this book nearby for reference and inspiration. It goes along perfectly with my collection of Tightwad Gazette books. Buy this book, learn how to conserve, reuse, make do and pass it on to others.
A great treat for country and city dwellers alike!.......2000-10-31
Knowing Deborah personally, I can say she lives what she writes. She's a precious woman, who has learned to move from city to country and can help anyone who wants to do the same! The tips in this book however are not only for country folks! Being a city dweller myself, I found them timely, cost saving and just plain interesting to say the least- ideas I never would have thought of. If you own Carla Emery's book, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA TO COUNTRY LIVING, you will love this book as well- it's a great compliment and there are not any repeats of information. I love the lawn care and kitchen helps, as we have children with allergies and a dog that we don't want to use alot chemicals around. The tips in this book are invaluable and well worth the monies! I really love the updated design and hardcover version of this treasure as well.
Product Description
Combining old-fashioned common sense and modern-day ingenuity, Pearls of Country Wisdom offers hundreds of ways for anyone to enjoy a simpler, more natural lifestyle. In 1995, Deborah Tukua and her family left their suburban home in Jacksonville, Florida, for life on a farm in rural Tennessee. When they arrived, Tukua turned to her neighbors in nearby towns for any pearls of country wisdom they might be willing to share. Instantly, good advice gushed forth from every imaginable source, including farmers, midwives, herbalists, shopkeepers, and more. This unique and indispensable book represents the distillation of a community's tried-and-true techniques for everything from caring for linen to keeping harmful bugs out of the garden. Here are tips for every corner of the home from bath to tool-shed, kitchen to barn. For example: Need secret storage space? Who'd think to look inside the bottom step of a staircase? Keep brown sugar soft. Refrigerate in a glass jar or plastic bag with a piece of bread or apple. Egg whites applied to a burn give quick relief. Dampen the rim of a bowl or jar and the plastic wrap will cling better. To purify water, add a few drops of bleach to a gallon jug. Every tip is practical, easy, and affordable. Best of all, many of them have been handed down through the generations, and all of them have been implemented again and again in many a country home. Pearls of Country Wisdom is perfect for the novice and seasoned homesteader, as well as anyone looking to bring a bit of the country life into a city or suburban home.
Book Description
The first retrospective of the work of Ray Ellis, a celebrated American artist acclaimed for his paintings of Martha's Vineyard and the Lowcountry of Georgia and South Carolina.
With an insightful text by a noted American art specialist and vibrant, color-infused images, this dazzlingly beautiful book reveals the full breadth of Ray Ellis's remarkable career. While Ellis is often described as an Impressionist because of his loose brushwork, bright color, and interest in light and atmosphere, his work is naturalistic and closer to realism. Equally talented in oils and watercolors, he interprets the many sights and locales he has seen. In addition to marine subjects and coastal landscapes for which he is best known, this volume also presents his finest still lifes and paintings of cityscapes and travels. The works span several decades from the early 1960s through his most recent paintings. Ray Ellis In Retrospect: A Painter's Journey also includes an illustrated, autobiographical essay by Ray Ellis and a chronology. Now in his eighth decade, Ellis continues to be passionate about painting. Still studying and experimenting, his greatest pleasure is to begin his next work striving to "do the best painting" he has ever done.
