Book Description
Upon their arrival, they discover they will be staying at the most historic castle in all of Scotland, a place teeming with dark secrets and haunting shadows. It seems that Prince Eddy, who had been heir to the throne until his purported death in 1892, has actually been alive all these years. Deemed unfit for the throne, he has been living secretly at Glamis Castle under an assumed name. Only now the prince has gone missing-on the very morning that the body of one of his servants was found, her throat slashed. Now, Charles and his clever Kate must find Eddy and clear his name-while keeping his true identity a secret.

Robin Paige consistently fun.......2007-09-08
I recently discovered Robin Paige through reading books by Susan Wittig Albert, one-half of the "Robin Page" husband-wife writing team. I have consistently enjoyed all his/her/their books. In addition to setting forth a well-plotted mystery with evocative settings and engaging characters, each book relates to some political or social issue of the Victorian/Edwardian era -- labor unrest, Jack the Ripper, forensic advances. If I've made them sound "good for you" (horrors!), don't shy away on that account -- they are delightful page-turners as well.
best paige book yet!.......2007-06-17
I have read 5 of the Paige mysteries and I couldn't put this one down! You don't need to read them in order to enjoy this one.
The Resurrection of Prince Eddy.......2005-07-21
Lord and Lady Sheridan are on holiday in the north of England when an urgent message arrives calling Charles and Kate (Lord and Lady Sheridan) to parts unknown at the request of King Edward VII. They arrive at the train station to find a special train waiting for them and a squad of hand-picked soldiers. Still not knowing where they are bound or why, the sleuthing couple are intrigued to find that the rail lines have been cleared so that their train can make all possible speed. The reader of course will know by the title of the book that they are headed to Glamis Castle, the hereditary home of the recently deceased Queen Mother who puts in a short appearance as a small child.
The authors of this series put a great deal of time and energy into including real historical characters in their books and this entry is no exception. The presence of these historical figures adds a great deal to this series but in this case, as in at least one other entry, the authors have taken a leap off of the edge of historical believability. The scenario played out in this book is based on one of the great conspiracy theories of all time and sometimes the whole story borders on the ridiculous. It is a well known historical fact that King Edward's eldest son, Prince Eddy, was an embarrassment to the royal family and that there was a great sigh of relief in many quarters when the young Prince died of syphilis. All of this is just too convenient for those who traffic in conspiracies however and so the theory that he had not died but was exiled came into being. He was, according to the authors of this book, exiled to Glamis Castle where he lived in solitude until August of 1901 when he disappeared.
King Edward knowing full well that the monarchy would be shaken to it's very core if this great deception were to come to light, sent for Charles and Kate because they had proven themselves to be able and most of all discreet investigators. All the more ominous was the fact that just after the Prince was discovered missing, one of his servants was found with her throat slashed. Since yet another conspiracy theory had linked Prince Eddy to the Ripper killings Charles and Kate not only had to find the Prince, but also prove that he didn't kill the maid. Just to muddy the water even further, Prince Eddy's mind has become unstable and he thinks that he is Bonnie Prince Charlie trying to escape the English army. Just by coincidence, his closest friend is the daughter of his slain maid and her name is Flora MacDonald.
As is the norm in this series, the authors paint a beautiful verbal picture of turn of the century England and in this case, Scotland. The characters that they create are very believable and the haunted setting of Glamis Castle is marvelous. Unfortunately, the plot is a little weak and the reader will pretty much have the mystery solved by the middle of the book. The presence of cleaver German agents, a love-sick Constable, and a band of gypsies all combine to make this story almost comical at times. The sad thing is that the authors didn't intend it to be funny. This book is just not up to par with most of the other books in this series. It is an enjoyable read and I loved the Scottish setting but all things considered, I would recommend most of the authors' other books well ahead of this one.
I enjoyed this entry.......2004-11-08
more than most of the other reviewers, apparently. Some of the things the other reviewers complain about I actually enjoyed. It is true that the reader knows pretty quickly who committed the murder but the manner in which we get to see Charles & Kate work toward the solution is interesting and full of historical trivia.
Lord Charles Sheridan and his wife Kate are called upon by the about-to-be-crowned King Edward (again) to find his missing son, the one that should be the future king but has been exiled to Glamis Castle in Scotland for ten years and reported to be dead. He had been an embarrassment to the royal family for years and they had decided to announce his death rather than allowing him to become king at some point in the future. The German Kaiser has found out that 'Prince Eddy' is still alive and wants to kidnap him and present him to the public in order to embarrass the British royal family (and potentially bring the royal family down).
The story is filled with historical trivia and turn-of-the-century small town Scottish life and I found it interesting. I like the main characters as well, probably helping me be interested in the non-mystery aspects & descriptions.
I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, "Death in Hyde Park."
I think both the authors were History Professors.............2004-05-13
I liked the premise of these books from the beginning and have found them mildly enjoyable. But, I always had to ask, "Don't they talk to each other?" Where is the dialogue. These books are very heavy on historical detail (and I find it amusing the authors feel the need to include references at the end of the book), but the lack of dialogue does not make it a compelling read for me.
And, there was very little suspense or mystery in this book.
Sorry, it's the last for me.

The Mammoth Book of Sorcerers' Tales .......2005-01-22
I am disappointed in this book. I have read 10 of the stories so far. Each story starts off great and builds into something exciting. Then each one seems to end abruptly. So my problem is with the endings. Each one is worst then the one before.
I would not recommend this book to someone who is starting to read fantasy. It will disappoint them
Something for Everyone.......2004-12-26
What an excellent short story collection! Though I have been a science fiction / fantasy fan for much of my life, I have only recently begun to read anthologies such as this one; however, I have read quite a lot in the past few years. Of the 15 or so that I've enjoyed, I do not hesitate to recommend this book as one of the best. Each of its 23 short stories is an amazing work of art that will have readers eager to flip to the next page. With a spectrum of tales ranging from magical events triggered by a seemingly harmless computer game to stories of fairy-tale-like love in jeopardy to wonderfully lighthearted comic fantasies, every reader with the slightest interest in the genre is sure to find something appealing. In fact, with the inclusion of comedy, computers, and modern-day themes, even those who don't normally read fantasy may be hard-pressed to put this novel down!
500 pages is simply not enough, and I can only hope to see more anthologies of this quality in the future.

Family reading.......2007-06-09
This booklet is must reading for the elderly and members of their family. Presented in an easy to read format and style by a nursing home chaplain, it contains easy to understand medical information from a spiritual viewpoint. Don't wait for an illness to prompt you into reading this valuable booklet.
Helpful for all ages.......2007-03-27
This little book is a must for all adult people. It addresses the serious question of what would you want done if you became mortally ill, were in an accident or in a coma and otherwise would not be able to speak for yourself. The frank, but gentle, theme of this book helps one to think about their own desires in these cases. One may think that it is only for "old people", but I think it is an important thing for each adult to consider carefully and let loved ones and your doctor know of your wishes. I would highly recommend this book for all adults.
Hard Choices for Loving People - Hank Dunn.......2007-03-24
This amazing little book, "Hard Choices for Loving People", is one of the best gifts you could ever give a patient and family who are facing these important end-of-life choices. Mr. Dunn says it so clearly, objectively, and compassionately that so much of the fear and pain of the decision is removed. I am a geriatric nursing leader of 43 years and have felt fortunate to have found this fine book in the early 1990s. I have shared it with many healthcare organizations and providers in California...from acute care to hospice, home health, Long-Term care, and now my church ! Thank you Mr. Dunn. Saundra Jack, RN MSN

I am a health care lawyer sometimes tasked with helping people face difficult end of life issues. This is the most sensitive and lovingly realsitic book of its kind that I've seen -- and there are many other good ones out there. Pssst -- you also can get it through a free pdf download at www.hardchoices.com . The booklet is prettier, but whatever the format, it's a vital read. I've always recommended it to clients, but my own family used it to open up hearts and minds -- and settle an ugly dispute between my mother and one of her brothers -- when my grandfather was dying of Alzheimer's. Hank Dunn's work is a God send.

Contains tips, trainer's secrets, and why hearing dogs are the fastest-growing facet of the assistance dog industry. The only book with such an extensive temperament testing section for dogs in shelters and the pet owner.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for all people in any part of the Assistance Dog community.......2007-09-23
This is one of the best books I have read. I am a SD user, but have never used any hearing tasks, and I don't think I will ever need to. The book was incredibly detailed, especially in terms of determing the appropriate temprement of the dog, which is the most important thing for any Assistance Dog. Hence I felt this book is a must read for anyone in the Assistance dog community. The tasks may not be relevant to you but the rest of the book certainly is.
Trainers Gold Mine!.......2006-03-05
This book needs to be appreciated as being far more than guidance for a specialized field. The author's insight regarding the balance of reactivity, intelligence and temperament make this a must read for any serious student of animal behavior. Liberal use of photos illustrate the often difficult job of interpreting canine behavior and further discussion of the system used by the author to evaluate suitability and the successful progression of training are so informative.
I bought this bought in anticipation of my husbands hearing loss and only started reading it after it sat on my shelf for months. It has great relevance to every animal I handle, horse and dog, and I only wish I had read it when I first bought it.
This represents a tremendous synthesis of all the best information in the field and more! Highly recommended.
Lend Me an Ear.......2005-08-12
I had a servicedog I am training for hearing help so the first 2/3 of the book were of limited use for me though it was very interesting and would be applicable for choosing almost any service dog. The last 1/3 was very good and I look forward to using them to teach my dog while I still have enough hearing to train her.
Excellent Book.......2003-04-12
Wonderful book. Everything there is to know about hearing dogs is in this book. It takes you from point A to point Z. And has some very informative pictures.
An earfull of training tips.......2002-09-13
I read Lend Me An Ear specifically for its huge section that analyzes breed
types (as groups, not as individuals) when selecting a dog for service
(specifically hearing) work. I found the training tips to be very helpful,
as they address some of the more obnoxious personality traits found not only
in what the author termed "reactive" dogs but also occasionally in our own beloved
trained service dogs. The book is hilarious at times with many personal
examples of the trials and tribulations of training hearing dogs to alert
their partners to various sounds

Book Description
One of the world's major forms of writing, Arabic script is the language of the Koran and it became widespread as a result of Islamic conquests of much of the world. The Koran places great importance on writing, and in the first verse of the holy book, reading and writing with the calamus, or reed pen, are praised as the source of all knowledge and all spiritual or scientific paths of change. For this reason the Islamic world is known for its reverence for books, as well as its love of writing. Eventually Arabic script gave rise to calligraphic art, which became an art form of astonishing beauty. More highly regarded than painting, Arabic calligraphy is approached aesthetically like music, with its own rules of composition, rhythm, and harmony.
This enlightening book helps us discover an alphabet that throughout the centuries has been linked to the secular and religious worlds of Islam. The text explains the history and meaning of each letter, as well as its philosophical, theological, and cultural significance, and 300 two-color and black-and-white pictures illustrate the letters, their variants, and calligraphic adaptations. An ideal book for linguists, graphic designers, and collectors of Islamic art, Arabic Script will also prove handy for travelers who wish to become familiar with the rudiments of the alphabet.

Just buy it ! (if you like Arabic).......2003-12-11
This is a really beautiful and informative book, a true collectable. Wish I had a first edition. If you love Annemarie Schimmel's books, you MUST buy this. It would be a great present for anyone interested in Arabic, and I haven't seen it in any of the Arabic bookstores.
Disappointing.......2003-04-19
I'm afraid I must start by saying I haven't read the English edition, but the Italian original. I approached it with high expectations, which were dashed.
Why did I find it disappointing? Perhaps I was expecting a bit more content; instead the book had the feel of a book thrown together to create a book. This is even more true of his companion volume, 'L'alfabeto ebreico'.
The illustrations seem too small to provide a useful guide to the caligrapher, and tend to concentrate - like to many books on Arabic calligraphy - on the illumination to the detriment of the calligraphy itself. The book also relies too heavily on Arabic typography, which isn't really the same as calligraphy, and which so often breaks the canons of calligraphy, with the result of seeming both ugly and hard to read.
I'd like to have know far more on the tradition of calligraphy and the calligraphers themselves; a more focused investigation of the styles used and how they've developed; a useful bibliography.
All in all, disappointing.
An insight to Arabic culture through its calligraphy.......2002-01-05
This richly illustrated volume on Arabic calligraphy is truly a feast for the eyes. The book begins with a brief introduction on the evolution of the Arabic script from its pre-Islamic origins to its blossoming into the many calligraphic forms we see today. Examples of the script throughout its development are provided, from early Nabatean scripts to modern attempts at introducing capital letters. Particularly interesting is the letter from the prophet Muhammad to Mundar ibn Saui (the script used by Muhammad is a bit different than contemporary Arabic script). In the next section, each letter is individually given at least a two-page discourse on various calligraphic forms, the symbology associated with the letter, its current use, how the letter relates to the Qur'an, and pronunciation of the letter (e.g. the Arabic letter 'shin' is used as an abbreviation for path and to Sufi mystics 'shin' symbolizes personal destiny). The final section shows examples of texts, manuscripts, and other sources depicting the wide range of calligraphic styles. Examples include excerpts from Qur'ans, from medieval-era scientific treatises, from talismans, and from other sources dating from antiquity to the present. The glossary at the end of the book, though too brief, is quite helpful.
This book is more about the artistry that is inherent in the Arabic script rather than on teaching the reader how to write Arabic letters - and you don't need to know Arabic to fully appreciate the artistry. Khan's work will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in Islamic art, culture, or the Arabic language.
WOW !! What a great book..........2001-08-11
This book is well thought out. Extremely informative. It has lots and lots of pictures. The best part is for those of us who are trying to teach ourselves Arabic Calligraphy, and are somewhat limited in reading Arabic. The author gives full details on the calligraphy along with dates, english translation, etc. There is no guess work, the author assumes you don't have any Arabic so, if you don't have an arabic teacher, this is the book. Informative, easy to read and full, full of detailed information, the author was very generous with pictures.
I know you will enjoy it.
Definitely a good buy.
Covers both the history and meaning of each letter.......2001-07-06
Gabriel Mandel Khan's Arabic Script considers the styles, variants and adaptations of arabic script, covering both the history and meaning of each letter. A highly recommended pick for a specialized audience of college-level students in either language or art.

Book Description
Public lettering in all its forms—official inscriptions on
buildings, commercial graphics, signs, epitaphs on tombstones,
graffiti—is a fixture of urban life. In Public
Lettering, Armando Petrucci reconstructs the history of
public writing in the West and traces its social functions
from the eleventh century through the modern period.
Taking the city of Rome as a case study, Petrucci begins
with a consideration of the first civic inscriptions after
ancient times. Substantial chapters on the uses of public
writing in the industrial revolution and the early twentieth
century prepare the way for his provocative discussions of
public lettering in the the contexts of fascism, post-war
radicalism, and the student revolutions of 1968 and 1977.
Throughout, Petrucci is concerned with the relations
between the functions and styles of letters and the places
where they appear. Writing, he argues, is one of the
instruments of public power; display lettering is often the
image and mirror of power itself, making the social use of
written forms a type of conquest. Because of Rome's role as
a “World-City,” Petrucci's interdisciplinary study has
wide-ranging implications for our understanding of the social
function of graphic design.

Book Description
On August 15, 1947, the day of India's independence from Britain, Ram Dass and his family were Untouchables--lowest of the low in an apparently unchanging caste system, landless serfs bonded to a feudal village lord in a remote part of Uttar Pradesh deep in the heart of Hindu India. Fifty years later as the country celebrated its half-century of independence, Ram Dass's family still suffered poverty and oppression--this despite their efforts and despite the changes which have transformed the face of independent India. This book is their story, and the story of modern India. Told through the voices of several generations, it takes the reader on a journey into the reality of Asian poverty--the powerlessness, the sickness, the illiteracy and all the other deprivations which enmesh the poor. Gradually we learn to understand not simply the human reality of what it means to be poor, but also the central paradox of modern India: half a century of democracy, economic growth and constitutional commitment to social justice has not lessened the acute, mass poverty of the country. This vivid account draws its readers into an unforgettable understanding not just of the personal experience of poverty but of the intractable reasons for its continuance.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, thought-provoking and moving. A real eye-opener........1998-09-09
This is a work in the genre of Orwell's "Down and out in Paris and London." Immensely readable, despite the very serious nature of the work, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in development issues, untouchablity and in learning about how it must be to live in abject poverty. Kudos to the author for this fine contribution to the few works that exist on the subject.
