Another Great Book.......2007-06-07
I love this series. Not only are the stories well told but I love how the books include real authors from the period in the story lines. This is usually done with fairly minor characters but Rudyard Kipling plays a major role in this book. The books are also very well researched and in this particular book I learned a great deal I had never known before about the smuggling that went on in England. These mysteries are also very family friendly. I would recommend them to anyone.
Do you like Kipling? I don't know, I've never Kippled. .......2005-05-23
At the end of the last book of this series, Sir Charles and his wife Kate were happily residing at Kate's ancestral home at Bishop's Keep. In the interval between that book and this one, Sir Charles' brother has died and the couple is now Lord and Lady Sheridan. Being the fifth Baron of Somersworth has placed a great deal of added responsibility on the couple's shoulders not the least of which is Lord Charles' seat in the House of Lords. While in London, the pregnant Kate ventures into the slums to aid in the care of the sick and becomes sick herself. Not only does she almost die but also she looses the baby and the ability to have children. Her feelings about this loss are bottled up inside as are the feelings of her husband and this background story ends up playing a large role in the plot as a whole.
Lord Charles has promised Kate a holiday away from London where they can spend time together like they did before Charles inherited all of these new responsibilities. They head for Rottingdean, a little village on the Channel taking along only Amelia and Lawrence, their two most valued servants. They arrive just after the body of a Coast Guard has washed up on the beach, a death the local constable writes off as a suicide. Soon another Coast Guard is found shot and by a gun the likes of which Charles has never seen. Unfortunately for Charles, he is at a party with the Crown Prince when news of the second death arrives. Remembering the bang up job Charles had done in a previous investigation that saved the Crown a great deal of embarrassment, His Royal Highness put Lord Charles in charge of the case. So much for their quite holiday!
Charles and Kate are soon hard at work and slowly they begin to uncover what seems to be a vast conspiracy. A conspiracy that at face value doesn't make any sense at all. They are aided immensely by a local boy named Patrick who knows far more than he is willing to tell at first. He is after all quite fond of some of the people who are very deeply involved in the conspiracy. I have a feeling that we will see more of Patrick in future books.
Besides the Prince, the other historical figure who shows up in this book is the famous author Rudyard Kipling, who also aids the investigation a great deal. The appearance of these real people in this series adds a greatly to the stories as does the very realistic atmosphere. The authors are to be commended for their skill in story telling and their willingness to do a lot of research to make everything so believable. These stories are so realistic that while reading a previous book in which the characters must have drank gallons of tea, I started craving tea and had to break out the Earl Gray. In this book they drank lemonade and I ended up sending to the store for some of that. It takes a very talented storyteller to take a reader that deeply into a story. This is just a marvelously fun and suspenseful book that will keep you glued to it's pages from beginning to end.
Excellent read !.......2004-06-26
Loved the story , maybe I am being biased for I am lucky enough to live in Rottingdean. I was able to read the story while sitting by the village pond & on the beach. The historical research into the area is first class. Great read for the Summer or a seaside holiday.
Excellent Story!.......2002-07-02
This is an excellent addition to the Kathryn and Charles series. In this book we find out about another aspect of Victorian England - smuggling and other nefarious schemes. There are actually two storylines in this book, and the authors deal with both of them very well. They certainly keep their readers interested. I like the obvious research that goes into each one of these books, and the totally different view that we are given about life in England just before the turn of the last century. The books are always enteratining and we get a history lesson too.
Smuggling is alive in Victorian England.......2002-04-30
Kate and Charles Ardleigh take what they hope will be a relaxing vacation in the small coastal town of Rottingdean. But after two Coast Guards are murdered, the Prince of Wales sends them to investigate. It doesn't take long before they realize that smuggling in involved. With the help of Rudyard Kipling, they soon realize how many secrets the seemingly quaint and quiet town is hiding.
I enjoyed this book in the series. It's not too preachy, lots of atmosphere, and the suspense doesn't let up! Just great.

Elves, Shamans, Satanists, Bikers, and Wingless Angels..........2003-08-08
If that sounds complicated, it's supposed to be. There's little future in trying to offer a synopsis of this urban (well, sort of) fantasy romp, which takes place in the same world invented by Mercedes Lackey for her SERRAted Edge Series, and is a direct sequel to Shepherd's "Elvendude" (it helps if you've read that first). The battle between Seleighe (Light Elf) King Aedhan's clan and its Unseleighe (Dark Elf) rival led by Japhet Dhu spills over into the human world, where it sweeps up 15-year-old Lucas Trask, a confused teen wavering between suicide and Satanism, and Wolf, a Native American Gulf War vet who is the last member of his tribe and the grandson of a shaman. Wolf's presence, in turn, involves Thorn Wilson, a Rider Guardian--a sort of angel who's been dead since 1922 and serves the Lord of the Land of Shadows as the helper of motorbikers everywhere. From Faerie to the Real World to the half-formed limbo that lies between all realities, the characters pursue each other through the interdimensional Gates, with abductions, human sacrifice, and assorted deceptions along the way. Though fast-moving, I found the story easy to follow, and there's action enough to suit any gaming enthusiast. I especially liked Thorn and would love to see him make a reappearance somewhere; he doesn't seem to have a lot to do here.
I have yet to be disapponted by any book written by Lackey or any of her co-worlders, and this novel maintains the qualitu of its predecessors.
The good gets better with this book.......1999-02-27
I have noticed a spate of "Native American" themes in fiction in the last five years, so it was with suspicion that I undertook Shepherd's Spiritride. Fortunatlely, he creates his own indian tribe with an interesting twist: It has Elven blood! (Maybe that's why it bears slight resblence to existing Indian tribes. It's fiction!) Forest Tribes may have started in the East, but how many still live there? We have Andy Jackson to thank for that. (see other review) Anyway, the plot quickly becomes complicated, with all the gating here and there. I couldn't figure out what was happening next. . . which is sort of the point, In my Humble Opinion. (The reference to Rocky Horror wasn't lost on me, either) The slow, insidious way in which Lucas is sucked into the Satanic cult was creepy, bringing to mind the Rad Right Fundamentalists in Wheels of Fire (which, in some ways, predicted the Waco cult/fire) and their methods for indoctrination. It appears to be well researched, making you stop an wonder about the Real cults that are out there. A big plus in my book, particularly when Shepherd refrains from being overly preachy on the matter. The evil speaks for itself. Mort is the villian you love to hate, and he returns in this story (And, ahem, is not. . .well, I won't spoil it) . I just wish there was more background on where he came from. I'd like to know where this little **** hails from. I loved this book, and could easily have read it if it were a third longer, even. I hope there is more on the way.
The elves are BACK!.......1998-07-15
Okay, okay...yeah, I didn't like this as much as the first novel. Who could? The plot was every bit as good, don't get me wrong...but I sometimes hated the way that things were done. Yes, it's a great read. It's fast-paced, and if you don't get TOO annoyed with the dark elves, then it's pretty good. I just wish that they would get a new villian. In other words, YES, I AM ANNOYED BY THE DARK ELVES!!! Anybody wonder what ever happened to Mort?
Handles landscape better than characters.......1997-09-16
SPIRITRIDE is one of the "Elves on the Road" series Mercedes Lackey began. The plot is classic Good Guys vs. Bad Guys; the part set in Elfhame Avalon is a sword & sorcery Western, which is actually quite fitting, considering the setting.
SPIRITRIDE takes place in Albuquerque and the flat country south of the city around the road to Mountainair. Shepherd's best comment in the entire book is that the energy in these parts is scattered all over the landscape, as much in the air as in the earth. I live there. He's right. It is. He's caught the flat dry flavor of the country, the scratchy scrub vegetation, the heat and the dust, perfectly. Pity he didn't do the same for his people.
SPIRITRIDE's best character is the ghost of the motorcycle racer from the 20s, now watching over all bikers. His next best is Wolf, part-Indian veteran of Desert Shield, coping with Gulf War Syndrome and a grandfather who insists on teaching him tribal legends before it is too late. Unfortunately, those legends and the tribal history bear no resemblance to any Southwestern cultures I ever heard of - and given their history as a forest culture, what's the old man doing living in a trailer in the middle of New Mexico? And if they are descended from a lost explorer from the Viking period, why does the first expedition's wisewoman bear the remarkably modern name of "Margot Jameson"? Why do the details of her faith and practice bear more resemblance to a book written in 1952 than to any of the rather well documented practices of the 10th Century? Time travel?
But the most disappointing part of the book is his handling of the sixteen-year-old boy caught in the war between the bad elves and the good elves. The boy has seen his best friend commit suicide. He has tried it himself, and been hospitalized. He has a stepfather who refuses to discuss any of this, but instead greets the most appalling events with cheerful denial. (Why?) The boy gets involved with a pack of melodramatically drawn Satanist/druggies, then as far as his family is concerned, vanishes for however long the events of the book take. And there the author leaves him, personal problems totally unsolved and a whole new set waiting for him when he returns home - if he does. Shepherd never says. But he's sixteen. If he doesn't go home, he has even more problems ahead. Is Shepherd planning a sequel? If not, he's dropped the ball and dropped it badly.
And, excuse me, "Avalon" as our local Elfhame? That's outlandish!
Read it for the local flavor.

Awesome book!!.......2007-10-11
This book is worth every penny! My marriage counselor uses this program and after reading the book and applying what we learned we really have not needed the counselor anymore. It is very straight forward and easy to do. It has brought my husband and I so much closer. I would love to give this book to every married person I know. I think it could lower the divorce rate in America.
Saved Our Marriage!.......2007-03-22
We spent thousands of dollars in counseling and were on the brink of divorce when we took the PREP workshop and read this book. It transformed our marriage! Five years later I am happy to report that we continue to implement the techniques learned and we have a healthy and happy marriage! Utilizing the tools outlined in this book on conflict management and effective communication techniques can change your life, and your marriage! Highly recommended!
Beautifully Simple.......2007-01-16
I was asked to read this book by my premarital counselors, and found it easy to read. The concepts presented are simple and encouraging and something I believe every couple could benefit from.
won't hurt, but not the best.......2006-11-10
The primary problem is the speaker's voice is terribly annoying--but that is a personal opinion. The robot/woman distracted from my ability to focus on what was being said. Second, it doesn't present things in a realistic way to what happens in relationships. How about telling it like it is--don't use "heated disagreement" when you mean screaming, cussing argument. They use nice terms for everything, and it waters down the listener's ability to identify what they are talking about compared to what discordant marriages actually look like. Third, everything about this material appears geared towards women and how women think. The focus is heavily on talking, discussing feelings, very warm, fuzzy, sweet little things to do. Blah! Gag. Fourth, even married couples have good old-fashioned need-based sex. Please don't continually say "making love". That is hokey and trite and laughable. I guess they have to say "making love" to protect those sensitive people out htere who are afraid that if they say SEX, then Gosh might Darn them to Heck. That, or an attmept to feel better about the fact that your man wants you to dress up like Little Bo Peep and sing Ba, Ba, Blacksheep while performing fellatio on him.
Other than that, there is some useful information and it certianly wouldn't do anyone any harm.
Best on communication ever.......2006-08-24
This book is the best on communication I have ever read! It has a thorough understanding of the problems of communication and provides a most practical approach to enhancing it.

I thought there would be more unique recipes using more vegetables (ie; Spagettie squash, broccoli rabe, etc) and variety of beans not just substituting dairy for soy cheeses.

Has a nice variety of Italian meals, some more involved recipes, but very tasty.
Much better Italian cookbook than I expected, and I am tough critic on Italian cookbooks.......2006-05-29
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. I am also very tough on Italian cookbooks in particular.
My husband and decided to try a vegan lifestyle about 3 months ago to reduce cholesterol. However, having to give up many of our favorite Italian foods was extremely difficult. Thankfully, as I was beginning to consider adding dairy back to our menu I found this book. It is a much better Italian cookbook than I expected it to be.
The book is outlined as follows:
1. Italian Cuisine
2. Ingredients and Equipment for Italian Cooking
3. Basic Recipes and Techniques
4. Sauces
5. Appetizers, Vegetable Side Dishes
6. Making Fresh Pasta
First Courses (Primi Piatti)
7. Pasta in Sauce
8. Stuffed Pasta: Dumplings, Crepes, and Baked, Layered and Molded Pasta Dishes
9. Pasta in Broth and Soups
10. Cornmeal and Rice Dishes
Second Courses (Secondi Piatti)
11. Baked Dishes: Omelets, Savory Cakes, Tarts, Gratins, and other Vegetable Casseroles
12. Vegetable and Bean Entrees and Stews
13. Meat Free Entrees
14. Bread, Rolls, Pizza, Hearth Breads and Stuffed Breads
15. Sweets
Some of the basic recipes that the author includes are: Tofu Ricotta, Tofu Mascarpone, Tofu Ricotta Salata, Almond Ricotta, Soy Free Almond Ricotta Salata, Cashew Mascarpone, Tofu version of Heavy Cream, Vegetarian Burger, Vegetarian Hot Italian Sausage, Vegetarian Sweet Fennel Sausage, Seitan (Beef, Veal, Chicken, Pork, Burger, Hot Italian Sausage versions). She also includes a number of different variations for Polpetti (meatballs).
Many of the recipes included in this book are time consuming. However, this is no different than standard Italian homemade items. I don't recommend this book to people that have limited time or limited experience with Italian cooking.
Bottom line, this is a much better cookbook than I expected it to be. Can I tell it isn't meat and/or dairy? Absolutely I can tell the difference. The author's variations are satisfactory substitutes if the alternative is the unpleasant health effects that come with the regular consumption of high fat animal products. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone that loves Italian food and wants to cut back on his or her consumption of saturated fat.
Time-consuming but tasty vegan cooking.......2006-01-29
I was looking for another vegan cookbook to add to my collection and chose this b/c of my Italian heritage. Everything looks wonderful and tasty but also very time-consuming. As a mother, I don't have enough time to make my own pasta. Also, several recipes call for other recipes in the ingredients so you are really making 3 or 4 different things and then mixing them into one dish. Not an easy thing to do, but obviously real Italian food is never quick to prepare. All in all, it's good but I'd look for a less time-consuming one next time.
Great dairy alternatives!.......2004-11-19
I must admit that I haven't tried out all the recipes in this book so far. But the vegan tiramisu is so outstanding, that even if it was the only tasty recipe, this book would be worth it!!! My non vegan friends can't believe it is made without dairy and request me to make it for birthdays and other celebrations. When I became vegan I thought I would never be able to eat tiramisu again, but thanks to Bryanna I can enjoy my favourite dessert again! I can`t wait to try the nondairy cheese fillings!

Customer Reviews:
Dissapointing.......2005-02-24
If you aren't an artist you may be frustrated by this one. I really didn't find this useful at all. I like great photos, but when it comes to paint books I want the artist to tell me HOW they did it, technique, paint mixing and all. Nice pictures won't help me mix paints or re-create the look in my own home. I have another book on faux finishing that tells you the ingredients. Ex: mix ochre with raw umber, 1 part glaze to 3 parts paint etc etc. I find that far more helpful. I think there are far better faux finish books on the market.
FULL OF INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL IDEAS........2000-10-01
Thinking of re-painting a room or your entire house? Looking for innovative ways to transform your "inner image " of how it could look into realistic form and beauty? Read this book before you begin. It is filled with versatile ways to achieve exciting effect in the home with paint, either on the walls or on the furniture or on the floors. Ms Sloan presents painting techniques, the newest material, and provides a list of suppliers as well. Textured looks, pearlized paint, sparkle paint, how to use plaster and patterns make this a very savvy book. Glad I found it before I made a very expensive mess.

Thinking Print-expansive thinking /curating by MOMA's Wye.......2002-01-13
"Thinking Print: books to billboards..." was a groundbreaking late 20th c. exhibition curated by Deborah Wye, a most thorough and original cultural /art historian. Wye is a curator with a fantasitc eye and an obsession for producing exhibitions and catalogs which explore their subject in-depth. In this particular instance, Wye is re-examining definitions and boundaries for the print medium in a manner that had yet to be accomplished. Her passion and scholarship regarding print, as a medium of expression and a medium for dissemination permates the pages. This catalog is a must have for libraries, as well as any serious artist, scholar or collector interested in printmaking from traditional to groundbreaking--from ink and paper to pixels.

Vija Celmins (Contemporary Artists)
ASIN: 0300097719 |
Book Description
Vija Celmins (b. 1939), best known for her intensely realistic paintings and drawings, has been engaged with printmaking since the early 1960s, creating a refined body of graphic work. As a printmaker, Celmins relies on traditional intaglio, lithographic, and relief processes to produce quiet scenes of ocean surfaces, desert floors, and star-filled night skies that are highly modern in their denial of conventional composition.
This stunning book, a catalogue of Celmins's graphic work to date, also features an interview with the artist and two of her closest collaborators, master printers Leslie Miller and Doris Simmelink, in which the significance of Celmins's print oeuvre is discussed.
This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 15 to December 29, 2002.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Living Artist?.......2007-06-27
Vija Celmins might as well just be the greatest living artist; her drawings and prints are mind-blowers and anyone who has every seriously studied art could at a glance see this artist's not only fabulously rich vocabulary, not only her superior drawing skills, but more so her fanatical dedication and a single-minded effort that is nothing short of unbelievable.

Book Description
Through a combination of theoretical and historical analysis, the author develops the thesis that the concepts of "race" and "ethnicity" are socially constructed. With case studies of the incorporation of Blacks and Irish immigrants into the social structure of the United States, Richard Williams demonstrates that the social values that have been placed on these groups result from their placement into specific labor categories rather than from attributes inherent to the groups. The author first analyzes the process by which the social identities of Blacks and Irish developed in their native lands. Turning to an analysis of the social structure in the United States at the nation's founding, he argues that the society was hierarchical from its inception and that Black slave laborers and Irish wage laborers were demanded to fill positions created by that hierarchical structure. The conceptions of their racial and ethnic identities developed through a transfer of the value assigned to their social positions to the groups themselves. Racial and ethnic identities represent, the book argues, the legitimization of social stratification based on power relations.
