Book Description
Acerbic professor Marjorie Summerharp was reborn on Martha's Vineyard -- her mind and acid-tongue sharpened by the island's gentle waves and whispering breezes. So why would she walk into the ocean on a warm June morning, to be swallowed up forever by the hungry, merciless sea? Ex-Boston-cop "J.W." Jackson knows that evil can flourish even in the most serene of settings. And the more he investigates, the more it appears that the mysterious "accidental" death of the renowned local scholar was more premeditated than it originally appeared. But nosing around in a snake pit of academic jealousy, adultery, and bogus religion could prove deadly for the policeman-turned-fisherman...especially when Jackson exposes too many sinister secrets that are well worth killing for.

drowning?.......2007-04-27
Academicians descend upon the island with various professional jealousies and interesting talk of Shakespeare and Arthurian legends. But one of the professors goes swimming and gets pulled out of the water by fishing nets. Was it just a simple drowning accident? J.W. doesn't think so... the currents would have drifted her body miles from where it was located. Along the way in this very interesting story we run into a "sanctuary", which is a religious health camp full of European young people. We also find other professors with various motives for murder. The ending leads to an adventure with both J.W. and Zee put in extreme peril. Excellent! Delish!
Not bad..........2004-09-13
This is the second novel in the Vineyard series. I think that Criag does an amazing job painting the picture of Martha's Vineyard, the fishing, and the people who inhabit this vacation paradise. In this novel, academics have come to this island to work and discuss their thesises. One academic, Ian, even threatens the relationship between J.W. and Zee. However this published hunk is no match for J.W., and Zee soons returns to her beloved. However, just as things come back together between the faithful couple, apparent suicide or murder of another academic sends this weekend hiatus into a crime scene. I give this book a three because there are some slow moving parts. For example. J.W. spend a good bit of time in the library researching and reading the academic's thesises, visiting with an older scientist, and visiting The Santuary. There were parts that I literally had to push myself through. However the climax is exciting, and I like the character J.W. I reccomend starting with the first in this series _A Beautiful Place To Die_ and seeing if this series interest you.
Reprint Without Notice.......2003-07-03
This book was originally published as The Woman Who Walked Into the Sea, the second book in Craig's Martha's Vineyard series. The book was excellent then and it is still a good book. However, it is a shame that Amazon is not telling buyers that the book is a reprint.
Book Description
Behind all the plots and secret machinations, a dark evil lies waiting...
Nothing is as it seems in the kingdom of Lorm. The Druidic Prophecy that saw Prince Tolian transformed into a woman to save the world from a powerful Demon, has now strained the delicate political balance in Lorm. Dowbreth, the giant faerie warlord and ambassador of good will, sets a mysterious conspiracy in motion. Through treachery and dark magicks, Dowbreth strips Tolian of her powers and kidnaps her in the midst of the kingdom's Yule celebration. She must face her adversary as an ordinary woman and her only chance of success lies in gaining control of the legendary Moonsword...

Wonderful fantasy!.......2005-07-11
In the second of the Moonsword trilogy, we follow the newly transformed Princess Tolian, her wife Brythia and their friend (who used to be two people) Kiliordes, as they meet again with an old enemy. Treachery runs deep within the court of Lorm, and an alliance is struck between an ambitious courtier and an elf warlord. The Princess is kidnapped, her powers bound, and she is spirited away by her abductor.
The balance of worlds hangs in the balance, and it is up to Tolian's true love to set things right.
This book is incredibly well written and quick moving. The setting and characters nearly leap from the page.Diana is a gifted writer, and I anxiously await the final installment of this marvelous trilogy.
Exhilarating.......2005-01-19
In the sequel to Moonsword, Princess Tolian of Lorm has overcome her discomfort over her transformation from male to female and begun to accept her fate as a woman as well as the earthly incarnation of the Moon Goddess. Her cousin, Prince Kelvris, incensed that a woman may ascend to the throne, feels he should be rightfully named King of Lorm and accepts an offer made by Dowbreth, a faerie warlord, to help him in this effort. After minimizing Tolian's powers, Dowbreth kidnaps her and takes her to the faerie world. He forces Tolian to claim her right as Empress of Faerie and agree to wed him, ensuring his position as Lord of Faerie. Tolian's wife, Brythia, tracks Tolian, in an effort to save her from the faerie warlord's control. All seems lost when Brythia learns the faerie world has been closed and no one can enter, but she refuses to accept this and calls upon her own druidic powers to take her to Tolian and deliver to her the Moonsword.
Diana Hignutt weaves her own form of magic with this tale of fantasy. Displaying a creative imagination for imagery, visual detail, and interesting characterization, she moves the story along at a fast pace, with a chase sequence that is exhilarating to read.
This is the first fantasy I've read, and I admit to being spellbound the entire book. Ms. Hignutt delivers a nice twist at the end, brilliantly setting up the next book in the series, one that I am sure will be highly anticipated.
A delightful read.......2004-12-17
Diana Hignutt takes the reader on the wings of imagination to a world of wonder and fantasy in "Empress of Clouds." Princess Tolian saved his kingdom and the rest of the world from a diabolical demon by being transformed through druid magic from a man into a woman, a woman who is the physical manifestation of the Moon Goddess. While this book picks up the story of Tolian it is not necessary to read the first novel, "Moonsword," to fully enjoy and understand "Empress of Clouds."
Tolian continues to explore the mysteries and frustrations of being female and her powers as a goddess on earth, but not for long. Through cunning and deception her powers are subverted and she is kidnapped by an overlord of the faerie kingdom. The rest of the story flies by as Brythia, Tolian's wife both pre and post transformation, and her staunch supporters strive to rescue Tolian, before the faerie world and the mortal world are destroyed.
Occasionally the unusual names of the characters interrupt the reader's immersion into this fantasy tale, but that's the only criticism. Hignutt skillfully interweaves captivating descriptions of Tolian's world without slowing down the pace of the story. "Empress of Clouds" is a delightful read.
Dee Power Co-author of "The Making of a Bestseller"
Eternal Love.......2004-11-12
"Empress of Clouds" is a sequel to an earlier novel "Moonsword". In "Moonsword", Druidic prophecy foretells the coming of an all mighty Demon who will destroy the World. The only hope of salvation is for Prince Tolian, the heir to the Lorm throne, to be transformed into a woman.
The Demon makes a comeback in "Empress of Clouds". The Demon secures the help of Dowbreth, a powerful faerie warrior. Dowbreth must neutralize Tolian because she is the only one who can stand up to the Demon and defeat him.
Dowbreth's job is made easier because the members of the court despise Tolian. A powerful woman frightens the men. The men can not stand the idea of a woman ruling the kingdom. The women in the court are not only jealous of Tolian's beauty, but also dislike her for never having to experience the discrinination that goes along with being born a woman. It is amazing how soon the members of the Lorm Court forgot how Tolian saved their lives and the world.
Through treachery and dark magic, Dowbreth strips Tolian of her powers, kidnaps her and take her to an unaccessible place. Brythia, Tolian's devoted wife must discover how Tolian lost her powers, deliver the Moonsword to Tolian and find a passage to the unaccessible place where her lover is imprisoned. The action is fast paced and exciting. Other elements in the story include, cruelty, blackmail, male chauvinism, eternal love, superhuman efforts and feminine courage.
This reviewer believes that the author could have done a better job in linking these two books togehter. The second book, "Empress of Clouds" should have picked up right at the end of "Moonsword" instead of several months later. An earlier start would have permitted the author to better explain why the Druidic Prophecy strained the delicate, political balance in Lorm.
Book Description
Following her previous New York Times bestsellers, Dr.Laura Schlessinger, the conscience of talk radio, now addresses an issue near and dear to her heart: the stupid things parents do to mess up their children. Never one to shy away from tough truths, Dr. Laura marshals compelling evidence for the widespread neglect of America's children and convincingly condemns the numerous rationalizations to excuse it. These are just a few of her hard-hitting points:
- Don't Have Them If You Won't Raise Them: "The cavalier manner in which our society treats child care, not as a matter of intimacy and love, but as a matter of convenience and economics, is deeply destructive to our children's sense of attachment, identity, and importance."
- Dads Need Not Apply: "Single motherhood may be more acceptable to society, but it is not acceptable to children; nor is it in their best interest."
- Brave New Baby: "In our society, reproductive freedom means anyone can decide to create a life by any means with no, and I mean no, consideration of what is in the best interest of that new human being."
- Spare the Rod: "Children without discipline often become adults with tempertantrums, defiance, rage, depression, anxiety, poor school and work adjustment, drug and alcohol abuse."
Stupid Things Parents Do to Mess Up Their Kids covers all aspects of parenting and also tackles such cultural and societal concerns as abortion, modern sexuality, drug and alcohol use, violence, discipline, and a child's right to privacy.

Hits the nail on the head.......2007-10-07
Reading this book made me so glad I made the choice I did to stay home with my kids. I have no sympathy or respect for women who are flying down the money trail while dumping their poor babies in daycare with strangers; what a long, sad, miserable day for a toddler (no matter what Mom wants to tell herself). And as far as the ever-popular "I can't afford not to work" excuse, then why did you have children if you can't afford them? My husband is in the military; we don't make much money but we would NEVER use that as an excuse to abandon our children day after day all through their fleeting and precious childhoods. This also applies to the single, never married moms who maybe should have considered getting married before getting knocked up; daycare all day AND no dad! Yippee!! Bravo to Dr. Laura for telling it like it is. Once you have that baby, it's not about YOU anymore!
R. Jordan.......2006-03-30
I LOVE Dr. Laura and although I don't have children, I bought this book for a friend of mine that does and is having some difficulty with them. She has read the book 3 times and there is definitely a noticable difference in both my friend and her children's behaviour now.
I highly recommend this book!!!
Dr. Laura and Stupid parents.......2006-03-23
Right on again, Dr. Laura! She isn't afraid of just saying it like it is! We have kids, give them to someone else to rear, and then wonder what has happened to our society? She just levels with parents in the most ACCURATE and DIRECT way. Go Dr. Laura!
Dr. Psychology is right on!!!!.......2006-01-25
Dr. Laura was right on! She is correct in saying that children without guidance and boundries have lower self-esteem and experience depression more often. She is also correct in saying that children need to be corrected- spanked. The studies that some on here proport that damage children's self-esteem do not understand how skewed the data is. Many of the so called researchers have included spanking with those who slap, punch, kick, verbally abuse, and even whip their children with metal objects and wooden paddles. For those who have taken a statistics course or research methods course know how skewed this data is. Dr. Laura is going against the grain of society and saying there is a right and wrong and that we are not animals merely here on earth to follow our instincts and live to ourselves. She calls mothers, fathers, and parents to return to a society where people care and our selfless. This book gives great insight into the feminist movement and how socity is taking a turn for the worst!!
good title but needs a real doctor for its author.......2005-12-03
First of all, I wonder how this woman received the title of doctor because it's obvious she didn't do her homework! When she advocates the use of corporal punishment by saying "Children without discipline often become adults with tempertantrums, defiance, rage, depression, anxiety, poor school and work adjustment, drug and alcohol abuse." she is implying that this will happen to children who are not hit (or spanked whatever you would like to call this form of child abuse) by their parents. Had she done any research or even looked at the research of others she would have found that the majority of children that were spanked by their parents are the ones that end up like this! So it is very clear that she needs to take a good long look at her own values on parenting before she begins criticizing other parents for refusing to deliberately cause pain to their own offspring!

Chinese stir-frys, Spanish paellas, Japanese sushi, Indian thorans, Thai salads, Turkish pilafs, Italian risottos, Senegalese yassas, American gumbos: if rice isn't the heart and soul of all these diverse dishes, rice can be found piled right there at the side of the plate, or in a bowl. To say that Alford and Duguid, authors of the award-winning Flatbreads and Flavors, deliver the world of rice is much too simple an understatement. Your days of buying one rice to serve all purposes will end with even a cursory reading of this lovely book.
The authors are photographers as well as writers, but their greatest skill may be to travel the world at the level of the culture they visit. They seem able to drop away from Western culture and hunker right down with rice vendor or cook, no matter where.
Seductions of Rice opens with all the basics of rice, everything a reader would want to know and then some. Then on to the cultures of rice: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Central Asian, Mediterranean, Senegalese, and North American. Recipes either made from rice or to accompany rice range from Chinese Congee to Thai Green Papaya Salad to Japanese Quick Morning Miso Soup to South Indian Lentil Stew to Cuban Black Beans to Mexican Green Rice.
And in between? The authors fill in all the space between these diverse grains of rice with traveler's tales from the road. It is a luxurious book, a delicious book, a ripe combination of travel and taste. You leave off thinking that the world must be the shape of a rice ball. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
With a depth of passion and experience, and an ability to embrace and convey richness of place and taste, the authors of the groundbreaking Flatbreads and Flavors and the later award-winning Hot Sour Salty Sweet embarked on a far-reaching excursion to find the world's most essential and satisfying food. Along the way, they experienced firsthand dozens of varieties of rice, offering unimaginable subtleties of taste, as well as a staggering array of foods to accompany them, all providing a simple way to get flavor and variety on the table.
Seductions of Rice is the glorious result: two hundred easy-to-prepare dishes from the world's great rice cuisines, illuminated by stories, insights, and more than two hundred photographs of people, places, and wonderful food. Cherished dishes--Chinese stir-frys, Spanish paellas, Japanese sushi, Indian thorans, Thai salads, Turkish pilafs, Italian risottos--are shared not just as recipes, but as time-honored traditions.
Seductions of Rice will change the way we eat, the way we prepare and appreciate our food. It's as easy as putting a pot of rice on to cook!

What a book!!!.......2006-12-19
One word - AWESOME!!! If that's not enough of a review for you..here goes. This book will take hold of you by your collar and won't let you go till you've finished the last page....and not only that but this book will affect the way you think about rice...even if rice is a staple at your house and you feel like you know everything there is to know about it!
I read this book for 4 hours last night...and couldn't tear myself away from it. The depiction of countries and their people is so true and so touching, you'll feel like visiting those places.
Being an Indian myself, I could see all the recipes featured under the Indian section are 100% authentic...trust me on it. I'm sure the same goes for all the other countries too...do buy this book if you love rice.

Great Cookbook and More.......2006-09-23
This was one of those cookbooks that I glanced through at the bookstore, liked it, put down and then went on my way yet it never left my mind. I've found when I do that I might as well buy the thing the next time around. So I did and I was not disappointed.
As others have said its part cookbook, part travelouge organized by geography. I found this to be an interesting combination. I bought the thing for the reciepies but find myself enjoying the travelouges while search through it for my next meal. I don't know, it just seems like you get more out of the dish that way.
At the beginning of the book it tells a good chunk about history, cultivation, physiology and processing of rice. This was quite informative. Things like the advantages and disadvantages of hulled vs unhulled rice and rinsing rice before cooking. No perfect solution, just valuable information based on your needs.
The receipies are of course the meat of the book. When I first opened it up I figured it would be 300 ways to prepare rice or something like that. Far from it. Many (say half or more) of the dishes are not rice dishes at all but meals or snacks that you would eat with rice. So while it does have some rice specific dishes its really more of a cookbook that samples dishes from around the world. A good chunk of them are winners, far higher hit rate than I see in most cookbooks.
The receipeis themselves tend to be easy to moderate in complexity. Having its international focus does call for some ingredients that you just wont find at your local chain grocery store. There are some good mail order sources in the back for some of the more shelf stable items. For items that need to be fresh they often suggest substitutes.
Its a great book, I really recommend it and its on my short list of go to books when I ask myself "What do I want to cook for dinner"
Seductions of Rice.......2006-02-07
The paperback version/publisher's closeout of this book has grainy black and white photos. From other reviews, I gather that the hardback version has stunning color photos. The same great recipes and travelogue are in both books. (I personally wish I had spent more for the book with the better photos.)
My favorite cookbook.......2006-01-24
Great travel writing, great food writing, great photographs. I never tire of reading this cookbook. The authors stories are endlessly entertaining. We cook a lot from this book, Rice Congee, and Thai Fried Rice are 2 of the standby meals my family never grows tired of.
Fantastic!.......2003-12-26
This book is a combination of excellent travel narratives, photo-essays, and recipes. Most delicious are the fried rice recipes and the dipping sauces. Definitely a pleasure to peruse and also to utilize for simple dinner recipes with complex and authentic flavors. Some of the ingredients are difficult to find in typical grocery stores, but may be found in tiny international markets. A must for lovers of Chinese, Japanese, and Indian cuisines.

Customer Reviews:
Delightful read about Pugs.......2007-09-14
This book is a wonderful addition to my pug collection. There are echoes of my own pugs antics in every story the author presents and I have read myself into giggling fits, my pugs snorting, snoring and sleeping nearby.
As mentioned in a couple of earlier reviews, there are a couple of chapters that are a bit graphic and, yes, the one was "yucky". But that is exactly how the author intended to portray the whole incident since that was his reaction to the experience himself. It also conveyed his lack of experience in the breeding arena and his horror at certain practices, things I can indentify with myself. More importantly, at the top of each of those chapters he has a note stating that this particular chapter has graphic material in it not suitable for children.
He does repeat one story from his Pugs book (Hans Goes Swimming) which is one of the funniest stories I have ever read. I had my own scare with my pug one day when I took him to the dog park that borders Puget Sound. I don't find the repitition offensive, as mentioned in another review. For me it means that the story was so good it could afford to be told in two different places. As a writer myself, I understand how you sometimes need to recycle material. Also, not all readers of Pug Bus will be readers of his other books. There are thirty chapters in this book. I guess he can afford to repeat one story.
Mr. Maggitti is a satirist. If you do not like that style of humor you will probably not enjoy his writing style. I don't know why he would be criticized for talking about his personal life. Isn't describing your relationship with your pets one of the most personal things you can share with others? For me, Mr. Maggitti was neither self-indulgent nor inconsiderate of his reader.
I am glad that I added Pug Bus to my library and recommend it highly. But there are definitely chapters, or postcards, that are not for "children under thirteen or for adults who have a sense of propriety" as Maggitti himself states in the disclaimer at the top of chapter seven.
not for kids.......2007-05-12
I completely agree with eph's review below. I would also like to add that this book is not for children. There is way too much information on artificially inseminating a pug. I'm all for openness and honestly dealing with sexual matters, but this was just plain "icky".
A Selection of Charming Vignettes.......2005-08-05
Anyone who loves pugs cant help to be charmed by this book. I felt that I got to know each pug as I read through each chapter. If you own or have been around pugs as I have you will recognize many of the endearing traits and foibles that are present in this wonderful breed. Highly recommended.
Self-indulgent.......2005-08-03
I was looking forward to this book because I still refer to and re-read Maggitti's small Barron's text, PUGS: A COMPLETE PET OWNER'S MANUAL for information and chuckles, as it is full of good information and fun anecdotes. This book was a huge disappointment. I was surprised at the lack of content that is actually about the adorable snorting creatures I love (and presumably anyone who buys the book loves). Much of the text (which is wrapped in a cheap looking package--did he self publish?) is self-indulgent and repetitive. He repeats anecdotes from the aforementioned pet owner's guide, and he even repeats the same stories within PUG BUS--does he think we're so slow we won't notice? It seems so, as much of the book is arrogant rambling about his "wild ways" and anti-social behavior. He attests that this is his last work before retiring; I attest he wrote one too many.
Postcards that Pug owners can relate to.......2005-07-28
This book will be enjoyed by all dog owners, but particularly by those who own Pugs. Mr. Maggitti captures the playfullness, stubborness and endearing qualities of our furry Pug friends. The book is a compilation of stories about the authors' adventures as a Pug owner, which will have you rolling with laughter and nodding your head with understanding. I would highly reccommend reading "Postcards From the Pug Bus".

Book Description
Dolls have been our companions from the dawn of human intelligence. They are beloved by both children and adults, and their appeal is as complex as our consciousness. This volume evokes this appeal through its many and varied illustrations, a variety of quotations from books on dolls and toys and their place in our lives, and the author's insights. The images in Dolls and Why We Love Them are all illustrations from old children's books.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Little Book.......2003-11-03
The title and cover illustration of "Dolls and Why We Love Them" compelled me to pick it up. I then could not put it down because the illustrations so beautifully portray why I love dolls. Vintage paintings of children and their dolls fill the pages of this short book with nostalgia and idealistic images of children caring for their beloved companions.
The text rises to the stories told by the paintings with short prose and poetry sections based on different themes introduced throughout the book. The text is not a deep or lengthy look at why we love dolls, but the sentimentality well reflects the emotional tone of why we love dolls. This quick read is a treasure that will be picked up again and again by those doll collectors who love their dolls.

Sounds great.......1999-07-19
I havent actually read this book but I saw the authors on Home Matters and it sounded like a pretty good book. There is (to my knowledge) lots of projects for begginers to try, things like cabinets and storage boxes. The cabinet that they built on the show was pretty easy to make and I think I could have done it myself. You should definatly check it out.
interesting projects a beginner can make on their own........1998-07-02
They really thought up some great storage ideas in this book-my favorite has totally reorganized my kitchen-I built the storage unit for inside the door panel beneath the sink-now I have my dishwashing detergent, soap, sponges, and dishwashing gloves tucked neatly away with easy access! I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Modern writers and scholars from the Islamic East have represented actual or fictional encounters with the West in a surprising variety of ways. Far from constituting a mono- lithic approach to the West, as Western "Orientalism" often tended to, these writings reveal an interest in and sometimes acute perception of cross-cultural conflict and synthesis. The very difficulties experienced by writers and critics immersed in two or more cultures have led to new creative and innovative forms of response to the West. By shifting focus in East-West relations towards the East, it initiates further interdisciplinary discussions.

Book Description
This sought-after resource satisfies artists' yearnings for inspiration and instruction beyond the basic how-to approach of other stamping books. Stamp Art offers expert ideas and techniques from a dozen master rubber stamp artists. The book is divided into three sections: Altered Surface Treatments; Artistic Stamping; and Mixed Media Effects. A special section is also included in which contributing artists create art with a single stamp.
Demos include: faux finishes, marbled backgrounds, stamping memories, monoprinting, artstamps (mimicking real stamps), thermal embossing, stamping with carved stamps, handmade cards, stamp collages, miniature books, and more.
Customer Reviews:
a great book but beware of reprints............2007-05-13
as another reviewer pointed out on this book: Stamp!: Tips, Techniques, and Projects for Stamp Lovers(2004)-this book Stamp Art-was entirely reprinted in that book. While this is a great book for stamp artists, I did want to forewarn anyone, like me, who owns many craft books that this book has been reprinted so double check before you order it that you don't already own it.
Other than that-Sharilyn Miller puts out a great rubber stamping book-full of easy to follow instructions and full color photos. Recommended.
Not just for rubber stampers.......2005-02-20
The current trend (2005) in rubber stamping seems to be collage with an emphasis on the scrapbooking or altered books. This book gives you inspiration to take any of your paper obsessions a step farther.
The beautiful color photos, coupled with clear instructions help you imitate the design given or use that as a starting point for your own creation.
This book is a must have is you are involved in the paper arts.
Absolutely excellent for Beginner or Advanced!.......2003-11-28
I've been playing around with rubber stamps and card making for awhile and have a few great books in my collection - this is definitely one of them! I've never been to a rubber stamping class or anything, just have been learning techniques from books and this one definitely has great instructions. The steps are clear, materials required are listed out, and there are lots of pictures. The samples are beautiful which make it that much more fun. The different techniques range from faux finishes to marbled surfaces to masking/layering/stenciling to reverse stamping to deep thermal embossing etc etc. There are also some neat projects like making little books. I've tried most of the techniques - all have been easy to do with the help of the steps and explainations. What a great craft this is!!
A must have for your stamping library.......1999-12-29
This book was a wealth of information on everything we stampers want to know and learn about. There are tons of projects and techniques to keep you busy for a very long time. And in the back there is a helpful section of terms and resources. If you have a limited amount of dollars to spend on books about stamping then I would suggest that this book should be a "must have" for your stamping library. It was worth every penny I paid for it.
Woderful, imaginative & inspirational artistic projects.......1999-11-11
This is a wonderful book for stampers of all levels. It starts out by describing the basic materials & techniques used in stamping. Then it both demonstrates & explains step-by-step each of 15 techniques by various artists.
Some of my favorite projects include faux postage stamps, stamped booklets, miniature books, stamp carving & reverse stamping. An easy, less messy approach to marbling surfaces was indispensable to me.
The 3 galleries focusing on artistic stamping, altered surfaces, & mixed media effects are of great inspiration. Another gallery section shows a wide variety of techniques made with just one stamp, such as cranes or grapevines.
The glossary, extensive resource list & directory of artists are great bonuses. If you're looking for fresh stamping ideas focusing on non-cute, artistic stamping this is the book for you.

Book Description
Chinua Achebe is one of the world's leading novelists, a writer who, according to Nadine Gordimer, "makes you laugh and then catches your breath in horror." Growing up in the cultural crossroads of colonial Nigeria, he lived and mediated in a world in which people moved between allegiance to traditional Igbo beliefs and values and those introduced by the British, particularly Anglican Christianity under the Church Missionary Society (CMS).
His urge to write developed as an answer to European caricatures of African characters in such novels as Joyce Cary's Mister Johnson or Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Africans needed to tell their own stories, and Achebe's Things Fall Apart, published in 1958, became the first attempt by an African to tell a serious African story. Its remarkable success, compared to the works of the best in Greek tragedy, launched the development of a whole continent's literature, and resulted in the appointment of Chinua Achebe as the founding editor of Heinemann Publishers' African Writers Series.
Witnessing the fateful 1966 coup led by the young Igbo soldier, Captain Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, and the horrific backlash against the Igbos, Achebe, then Director of External Broadcasting for Radio Nigeria, began to lose hope in a united Nigeria and subsequently became a lead figure during the Nigerian Civil War in the struggle for Biafran independence. Since the end of the Civil War, Achebe has been an active voice against all forms of indiscipline in Nigeria, teaching, participating in politics, and writing. He is the recipient of several major international awards and recognition. The Times of London named him as "one of the 1,000 Makers of the 20th Century." This book, intended for youth and the general reader, is the story of his remarkable life.
