Hamish Macbeth has women problems- mainly too many of them. The main character of Scottish author M.C. Beaton's popular mystery series has an ex fiancé staying at the hotel, his most recent ex-girlfriend in town for a story and he has his eye on a new woman in town. If he does not have enough to handle there is a murder- another woman, of course. Artist Jock Fleming has come to the quiet town of Lochdubh to work on his landscapes. . His peace is quickly destroyed by the unwanted attentions of fellow artist and newcomer, Effie Garrard, who has rented a cabin outside the town. In spite of his blatant attempts to avoid her, she informs the whole town that not only are she and Jock engaged, she is pregnant with his child. When she is found dead on the hillside, missing her ring and ring finger, Hamish is the only one convinced it is not suicide. There is a reason the inhabitant of Lochdubh are leery of outsiders.
Lochdubh is a cozy Scottish village that does not welcome strangers so not much happens around town that its inhabitants do not notice. Hamish is the sole constable and his strength is watching how people behave and listening to what they have to say. What may sound like gossip to others are clues for Hamish. As another body turns up, the pressure increases on Macbeth to find the murderer. Even thought he is at least free of his nemesis Inspector Blair for this case, he is saddled with the addition of Detective Robin MacKenzie, another difficult, lovelorn female with whom he must cope. He must deal with all this while also trying to keep the attention of Jock's engaging agent, Betty Bernard. Add Effie's long lost sister, an ugly American and assorted villagers and Hamish has his hands full.
M.C. Beaton packs a full mystery into this cozy book. The plot is well crafted, enough action and suspense to keep the story moving. It is the characters that have made this series the long running success that it has become. Hamish as the laid back constable, happy with his small town job and life but always fast thinking is a protagonist that easily becomes endearing .One looks forward to meeting up with this delightful man just to see what situation he becomes involved in next.
If you need a relaxing read for a rainy day, a day at the beach or even a long car ride, you will want to take along this book or any of the previous ones of the 22 books in the Hamish Macbeth series. Since the first book in the series, Death of a Gossip, was published in 1985 it has gathered many fans on both sides of the ocean, although American readers will not have had the chance to watch the BBC television series based on the books. Under her name Marion Chesney, the author has written over 100 historical romance novels and, also as M.C. Beaton, the Agatha Raisin mystery series.

This is the twenty-second in a series of wonderful mysteries featuring the detective work of small town, Highland Scottish detective Hamish Macbeth, P.C. In this book, a local artist's infatuation with another artist turns to obsession, and the obsession leads to death. The Strathbane police quickly declare the death a suicide, but Hamish isn't so sure. Can he solve the case before one murder becomes two...or three?
This is another homerun for M.C. Beaton (pseudonym of Marion Chesney). This book has all of the charm of the earlier books, staying in small town Scotland, and involving all sorts of interesting and quirky characters. Overall I thought that this was a great book, and a great mystery. If you like mysteries, or are merely interest in the Scottish Highlands, then you must get this book!

When hopeless dreamer Effie Garrard moves to Lochdubh, apparently all she wants is to unleash her creativity as a painter, but it soon becomes clear that's not the only item in her subconscious and very unstable agenda. She begins having trouble with villagers and visitors alike. In fact, she is not liked at all. Then she is found dead.
The shocking news spread quickly, for how can such a horrible incident occur in such a picturesque little village? Is it suicide...or murder? That is for Constable Macbeth to find out. Unfortunately for him, the suspects are as devious, unexpected and peculiar as Lochdubh itself. Fortunately for you, the list of suspects is long enough to keep you guessing until the end.
There is a charming--and even childlike--simplicity in the author's writing style that adds to the folksy flavour of the setting, plot and protagonist. Beaton uses mostly dialogue to move the story and doesn't waste time with needless descriptions or character ruminations, which slows the pace.
Constable Hamish Macbeth, with his fiery red hair, reputation with the ladies, and love for his two eccentric pets, is an original and adorable protagonist. His is an unusual combination of unpretentious charm, naivete, a hot temperament, and genial deduction.
Death of a Dreamer is perfect to cuddle up with on those cold rainy days in front of a roaring fireplace, or in any place, for that matter.

Hamish Macbeth does it again!.......2006-11-11
I've only listened to one other audiobook about Mr. Macbeth and enjoyed it, so I asked for this one for my birthday. I love listening to the accents, dialogue and language usage but was disappointed somewhat when I predicted "whodoneit" early in the book. It was still a good read getting to the end, however, and I will listen to it again!

Overall, I would have given this 4 stars. Though we always know what to expect in formula from Beaton and Macbeth, Death of a Dreamer offered up some nastier side characters than usual. Rather than a novel filled with quirky but likable villagers and a nutter killer(except any book in Cnothan- no one likes Cnothan), very few of the extras are likeable. I enjoyed that bit of edge to spice it up a bit and make the killer a little less predictable, even it was still a bit evident before the end. Jock, all his crazy women, and the look at the art crowd were a change and interesting.
As noted in my header, I am taking an extra star off because of Priscilla. If Ms Beaton (or rather Ms Chesney) actually reads these I implore her to turn our dear Hamish off that woman. Find a way to have her face off head to head with Elspeth or something, but no more of this in and out of the stories. Priscilla is so BORING!!! She is cold- not just to Hamish, but to the readers. Marry her off, send her to a convent, ship her to the states to become a moralistic talk show host, I don't care! Just get her out of there. Those few novels where she was no where to be found except the occastional phone call were some of the most interesting and character driven!! Please return to those plots!!
Okay, enough on that... Hope to have better things to say in February about Death of a Maid!

This entry in the reborn Kolchak: The Night Stalker starts off with a bang, literally. An old woman steps into an ice cream shop and promptly explodes in front of the owner, who turns away because he then sees a werewolf leaping out of the woman. No surprise that that little tidbit snatches the attention of reporter Carl Kolchak, who happens upon the scene. The mystery becomes more gruesome when the ice cream shop owner explodes in front of someone a day or so later. Obviously something very odd is happening around Los Angeles.
Fever Pitch does a credible job of capturing the flavor of the cult TV show (and it follows the contemporizing that Mark Dawdiziak did in his Kolchak novel Grave Secrets - placing the series characters in Los Angeles). Kolchak still has a hard time making those around him believe the outlandish stories he runs across with regularity and the humor of the show is retained. My only complaint is that the monster is poorly thought out and the explanation given (while certainly unique) is nowhere near clear enough to satisfy. Nonetheless, the characters still look and act the way they did on the show and fans will certainly want this in their collections. I know I did. Kolchak lives!
Captures the spirit of the series.......2003-11-02
A gory story of exploding bodies with the witness of the phenomena becoming the next victim has Kolchak on the case. This graphic novel (basically a comic book with professional graphics and high quality paper) recaptures the spirit of the original series, including its humor. The running gag has Carl with a cold receiving advice from everyone he encounters about the best treatment. The main story is well told and paced with the ending being just a bit loose. Fans should know that this issue, and I believe the others in the Moonstone series, do place Carl in a contemporary setting. So while Carl and the rest of the cast look like they did in the 1970s TV show, the 21st century Carl writes his reports on a computer not his familiar typewriter from the series. Overall, I believe fans of the show, and even those unfamiliar with it, will enjoy this read.

We thought our situation with a 7-year old being in the middle of a divorce war was hopeless. I am very pleased to say that out of ALL the books, articles and online information I have read, Divorce Poison is truly the most thorough on the subject of brainwashing and deception, and was the most relevant to our situation. I was so touched by the book's relevance to me personally that I contacted Dr. Warshak to thank him for writing the book. Take the time to read it. Even a few sections if you can't read it all. It will be worth it!

Thank you Dr. Warshak, you have given clarity to a mother's longing for help for her children with the abuse they suffer by their father. The corruption of reality section literally made me gasp as my children are told to ignore me when I use loving longterm nicknames as they are told I don't respect them. There is nothing about me and our relationship post-divorce that escapes denouncement by their father. While I am fortunate that my children have not been brainwashed into believing these terrible things, they suffer tremendous pain and frequently have panic attacks when transitioning to their father. I am less worried about my relationship with them than I am about their well being. If I could ask for some advice on how to help them when they are actually being abused, how to help them cope with it and not internalize it. While your advice is critical for dealing with the effects of the abuse, how to help them suffer through it when it is actually happening is something I request that you provide additional brilliant insight about.

I purchased this book following a suggestion on a stepfamily related website.
I've read a great number of books over the years for work, college, and pleasure but this book is by far the best I've ever read.
This book should be a required read by family court judges, mediators, child daycare providers, child social workers, and teachers. It should also be a required read for parents in custody disputes or divorce litigation. It should be THE manual of parenting classes mandated by the family courts.

Very Informative.......2007-08-05
Very eye opening. As a victim of divorce poison,I was told "These things happen." I felt very alone and helpless. This book gave me great insight as to reasons why someone would do this to their own children. It gives even better insight into why the children follow suit and what the long term effects are for them, the REAL victims.
This book gave me courage, knowledge and better yet, direction. I live in a small midwest town. Our court system, lawyers and even mental health professionals have yet to acknowlege PAS as anything other than what happens when adults divorce and put the children in the middle. I now feel that I know better how to handle myself with both my ex and my children.
I hope that ultimately the offenders get harsh penalties and or punishments. Reading this book and eduacating ourselves and then others involved in one very important step foward. Someone has to protect the children from this kind of abuse.

I was disappointed in the book as a whole. Coming from working at a vet clinic as a certified veterinary technician I was looking for a book to tell owners about who had epileptic dogs. I thought this book was not owner friendly and would only confuse pet owners. Having my own epileptic dog gives me insight to their concerns and fears. I think that overall this book will confuse owners and make them question their veterinarians, when they need to have complete faith that the vet is choosing the right combo for their pets.While the idea was good, I would not recommend this book.

This book was very easy to read and understand. If your dog has just been diagnosed with Epilepsy this book is a good source of information to help you better understand the disease and how to deal with it.

This is a very informative book, the only one on the subject I have been able to find. The initial section on diet seemed over long and complicated but the rest of the book I found very helpful. It is distressing to see your dog have a seizure but I found the content encouraging and felt comforted that the condition can be managed without resort to drugs. Some of the tips I have started to use.
Great Help for dealing with seizures.......2007-01-09
My older dog began having seizures, other than this problem she is a healthy girl. I ordered this book when she was hospitalized for a cluster. I read the book as soon as it arrived and found it unbelievably helpful. There is life with seizures and this book helped me learn how to deal with and prevent them. Great book. Knowledge is power and I feel like I have a handle on this now.
Canine Epilepsy.......2006-10-02
In July of 2005, we rescued two dogs that were 9 years old. They were a brother and sister team and couldn't be separated. We fell in love with them immediately. Two weeks afer bringing them home, the male began having the most intense grand mal seizures that I have ever seen. We put him on medication and it slowed the number of seizures but had no effect on the intensity.
I began looking on the internet to see what information I could find and there it was "An Owner's Guide to living with or without seizures". It took me several months to go through the book, as I found it difficult to understand the relationships between all the parts of the body, hormones, etc. However, it got me extremely interested in a natural food diet and alternative therapies.
It took another month or so to do more research and then actually put the natural food diet into place. Now, after 6 weeks of feeding natural foods to both dogs, the male has seizures that sometimes aren't recognizeable. They are mild and the duration is less than a minute.
The purpose of this narration is that if it weren't for Caroline Levin's book and love for animals, our dog would still be suffering with grand mal seizures, not to mention my husband and I and his sibling. Not only that, but their skin is so soft, whereas it was always rather brittle before.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help with canine epilepsy and were as frustrated as we were. Thank you so much for the time that it took you to research this disease and offer your knowledge to us. It truly was a "godsend".

A "true" adventure........2000-12-18
Across African Sand is a an excellent example of what true adventure books should be. I emphasize the word "true" not simply to point out that events in the book are factual but to distinguish this work from books describing stunts. (To me a stunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event, filled with harum-scarum that a more skilled traveler would have avoided and usually detailing a significant departure from the main stream of the writer's life.) By contrast, Across African Sand comes across as the logical continuation of Phil Deutschle's career as a teacher and introspective traveler. Prior to embarking on his solo bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Deutschle has spent three years living and teaching in an out-of-the way village in Botswana. An accomplished linguist, he has become fluent-to-conversant with several local languages, including that of the !Kung (Bushman) people, and thus we learn more of African life and thought than we would at the mercy of a more casual traveler. Deutschle clearly enjoys the company of the various people he falls in with along the way but also relishes the solitude which is such a significant part of his journey. Part of the success of the book is its skillful interweaving of events in the course of his cycling trek with flashbacks to his life as a teacher in a traditional Botswana village. Dimi Press has done a creditable job of putting the book together and its illustrations are great. I wholeheartedly recommend this as an interesting and insightful story of travel and adventure.

Across African Sand: Journey Of A Witch Doctor's Son-In-Law is the true life adventure story of Phil Deutschle's bicycle trip across 3,000 miles of African landscape. Along the way Phil was stalked by lions, charged by a herd of enraged elephants, fell in love with (and married) the daughter of a prominent witch doctor. I bought this book for my husband. While he was reading it he kept interrupting my reading to tell me about what was happening in his book. In self defense, I picked it up as soon as he finished and immediately found myself transported to Africa. This book is much more than the story of the author's trip across the Kalahri on a bicycle. He writes about the people he meets and tells of their culture, the politics and economy of each group. He possesses interpersonal skills that allow him to relate to all sorts of people quickly and he writes about them with affection and respect. He describes plant and animal life along the way. Through flashbacks he tells of his earlier life and recent experience as a teacher in Africa. During the lonely stretches of his trip he wonders about his need to wander the globe. My husband said when he finished the book, "I've learned more about Africa from this book than all of the other books on the subject, put together" I agree, and I learned a great deal about life in general and men in particular from it.

I think that Phil Deutschle is a wonderful author, having to put up with all of that stress of how to fit in time to writ after or at the time of his experiences. And just being able to adapt to a community so quick ; but at the same time working.
