Customer Reviews:
Good anthology, but..........2006-07-30
I really liked the DROP-DEAD BLONDE anthology, which I bought for the short story by Victoria Laurie. Unfortunately, other than the characters being the same, it doesn't really fit into her Psychic Eye Mysteries series. Definitely read the other stories in the Psychic Eye Mysteries series, but don't worry if you read this one out of chrological (by publication date) order.
A Little Of This....A Little Of That.......2006-06-30
For a quick read, "Drop Dead Blonde" is a good choice. Four authors with quick mysteries followed by a chapter in each one of the author's next book. It made you want more. My favorite was Victoria Laurie's. The short story and snippet from her next book had me online ordering the rest of her books. This is a good way to try out new authors. Good read!
Chick Lit Amateurs Sleuths.......2006-01-23
Bite sized stories from 4 authors. I was a first time reader new to their works except for Victoria Laurie's. All stories of course involved blonde women as the title suggests. Like they say, blondes have more fun but they may end up in more trouble.
Nancy Martin - 2 stars. I found her style of writing difficult to get into. In the first place, all her characters seem to have wierd names that seem to imply that they are rather ditzy. Lots of brand names some imaginary thrown around as the sleuth used to be wealthy.
Denise Swanson - 4 stars. Liked the down to earth girl in a small town working as a counsellor in school full time but doubles up as a sleuth during school vacations.
Elaine Viets - 4 stars. Interesting plot in this book seen thru a retrospective angle going back to the 1970's.
Victoria Laurie - 5 stars. Ah, my favourite amateur sleuth author who never fails to deliver with her protaganist, Abby Cooper's, pyschic powers in solving crimes.
`Drop Dead Blonde' four murder mystery stories in one book. .......2005-11-17
`Slay Belles' by Nancy Martin tells the story Lucy who is ex-debutante and hot mafia man who solve a high-end department store murder.
`Killer Blonde' by Elaine Viets does a flash back to the 1970's telling a dead-end job mystery.
`Dead Blondes Tell no tales' by Denise Swanson the best book of all the four. This tells the story of Skye who spend her spring break week working at her boyfriends mothers `Bunny' bowling ally. Bunnies' friend arrives from Vegas and then the chaos mystery unfolds. The romantic tension between the Skye's current boyfriend a funeral home director and hot local police chief is electric. I am off to find more books by this author.
`Blind sighted' by Victoria Laurie finds Abby Cooper at Psychic convention and solving a murder with the help of her rich sister and spunky elderly lady. I am off to read more of the Psychic Eye Mysteries.
Fabulous Foursome.......2005-06-03
Do blondes really have more fun? Sure and the authors in this book show that even dying can be a ball. Get ready for four funny stories, each taking a different kind of blonde and showing what can happen when girls just want to have fun.
Nancy Martin's "Slay Belles," puts Nora Blackbird on the trail of a shopaholic who will do anything for the perfect purse. Dogs, sisters, and the general madness of Christmas make this a fun read.
Elaine Viets' terrific "Killer Blonde," gives Helen Hawthorne a break as she listens to her over the top landlady's interesting account of two blondes out of the past who duel to the death over office politics.
Denise Swanson's "Dead Blondes Tell No Tales," was my favorite. The ending was a complete surprise and the story had me laughing out loud. In this novella the small town of Scumble River is the perfect setting for a story of shenanigans that occupy school psychologist Skye Denison while she works at a bowling alley during spring break. Skye has to deal with sex toys, false alarms, karaoke, a Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest--not to mention the blonde.
Victoria Laurie's "Blind Sighted" was a new character for me. Abby Cooper is a psychic detective who finds her self at a paranormal convention rather than the vacation she thought she was going on. When a nonbeliever is murdered at the seminar Abby decides to find the killer. This charming story rounds out a fantastic foursome.

Book Description
When an evil warlord and his army take young Drazkon's family from him, two strangers rescue the orphan and vow to raise him. Aspen, the fleet-footed elf, and Exteri, a tiny fairy with a big heart, are these strangers. Aspen, taking on the full responsibility of the child, raises him as a child of the forest; and as Drazkon grew, so did Exteris' fondness for him.
Being in such a sorrowful and hopeless situation, Exteri visits her mother, the eldest and wisest of the fairy kingdom, for advice. Exteris' mother tells her of a legend which sends her and her friends on a very long and dangerous quest, which upon completion would allow Exteri to take human form. With feelings of love mutual between the hulking barbarian and the tiny fairy, Drazkon and his friends set out on their grand adventure with high hopes of success.
Along the way friendships grow stronger, as many dark and evil foes step forward to oppose the companions. Many new friends are acquired along the way; which suits Drazkon just fine, for to him this quest has two main goals; love and vengeance. The physical love he wished to share with Exteri, and the vengeance he vowed to bring upon the evil warlord Maxitor, and his murderous hoard!

Book Description
A revolutionary, proven-effective model that shows you how to:
· Identify symptoms of mixed anxiety and depression
· Cope with negative and painful emotions
· Calm your anxious mind
· Regulate dramatic mood shifts
· Learn how to soothe yourself
· energy and enthusiasm
Imagine feeling depressed and drained of energy and initiative while also being overwhelmed with feelings of dread and anxiety about the future. The consequence of this intolerable state of mind amounts to behavioral paralysis, a profound loss of control and quality of life. Therapist call this condition co-occuring depression and anxiety. Clinical research suggests that 60 percent of depression sufferers concurrently experience some kind of anxiety disorder. This book, the first written to general readers about this condition, uses the powerful techniques of dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, to help readers control both conditions.
DBT begins with the assumption that psychological problems are the result of feeling or emotional responses that are in conflict. It integrates a range of theraputic techniques to "tease apart" and resolve the competing internal needs and urges that generate anger, depression, and anxiety. By recognizing these conflicting emotions and forming new expectations, readers alleviate the symptoms generated by these conflicts. The book begins by having readers identify their most painful inner conflict. Then they develop compromises that acknowledge the issue but limit its ability to interfere with their liveseffectively reducing the extent to which their emotions govern who they are or what that are capable of. Exercises focus on assisting readers to become more responsive to uplifitng aspects of their enviroment and tolerant of unavoidable emotions.

DBT can do miracles.......2007-06-10
Can a book save your life? This book saved mine. The book along with therapy.
This book was rather dry reading but the end of the book contains lots of worksheets that can make all the difference. I wish this author would do a book of JUST worksheets. It is a book that was written more for the professional therapists or people studying this type of therapy but I have used it in group therapies and it is powerful and helpful.
When I first started, I tried to read the book but didn't understand it so I ripped out the last 1/2 of the book (Pages 105 - 180)..those were the worksheets and they made all the difference. After that I was ready for pages 59 - 105.
I eventually made it from page 1 and on but it is slow reading.
I know I only gave this book a 3, but it saved my life. It is just that it took three readings before I could really understand it.
Informative and Easy to Read.......2007-02-25
This will be an informative read for most, requiring somewhere around a high school reading level. Its layout is pretty straightforward and the concepts are presented clearly.
Whenever people have difficulty understanding a book like this there are three basic reasons:
1) The material is accepted by the reader but somehow distorted or too complex to comprehend.
2) The material is deliberately blocked by the reader because it violates some deep seated belief.
3) The reader is compelled by anxiety and intolerant of the pace the `material requires'. This last one obviously holds a particular note of caution for the readers of this text.
Of the three possibilities, most readers will discover that option one is `not' an option.
I suggest that anyone struggling with option two take a good serious look at Zen. Pure Zen is neither a religion nor a philosophy; it is a `path of liberation'. Its purpose is to free the mind from vicious circles of behavior and thought. And it works! DBT is a union between Zen and western psychoanalytic theory. For those that are interested, the following books on Zen are 'must haves' and should be read in addition to this book:
Zen Mind, Beginners Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
The Three Pillars of Zen: teaching, practice, and enlightenment by Philip Kapleau
Nothing Special: Living Zen by Charlotte Joko Beck
Take this book to heart; it will help.
depressed and anxious, thomas mara DBT.......2006-11-07
I have found this book to be worth while clinical tool. Mara has made a significant contribution with his work in taking DBT beyond the treament of the borderline patient. I am using this book in an inpatient clinical setting with some good results.
Pleased........2006-11-07
I got exactly what i wanted in exactly the amount of time I wanted it. The book so far has been challenging and insightful, and I'm anxious to put it into practice.
Usefull but weak from a theoretical point of view.......2006-10-07
I'm a PhD in logic, but have red with interest Marra's book, searching for a new and meaningfull perspective on depression and anxiety.
What the books lacks is an adeguate explanation of DBT. Thomas Marra has written a book easy to read, perhaps, too easy, forgetting the conceptual source of the theory. First of all: what is an emotion in his theory? Does it make sense that the self is not his emotions? What is the link between sensations and emotions?
In any case, it's too simple introducing DBT as a way to schift appropriately in a continuum, from one pole to the other, according the needs. What does this way amount to? Does Marra is saying that after an apprioprate cognitive work à la Beck on the emotions, one can move himself appropriately on this continuum? I.e. is it necessary to eliminate the thought all or nothing typical of depressed people showing other possibilities by a problem solving process?
I don't think that simply recognizing himself in an extreme is sufficient and necessery in itself to allow to the depressed to modulate better his emotions. He must have the appriopriate skills to do it. And here it intervenes CBT. So, it's not very clear to me the difference between CBT and DBT.
In other words, Marra's book is very useful and practical but it casts light not always on the concept in issue.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collectible.......2006-06-06
This is a good book to add to your collection if you are into collecting cookbooks or African American collectibles. There is a very brief introduction by the author of his life. It doesn't go into a lot of detail of his experiences as a chef but names a few places where he worked. Some of the recipes may be familiar to the seniors out there. I remember my grandmother preparing dishes that were similar in nature to some of the recipes listed.
Obviously, this isn't a cookbook like the ones of our generation. The recipes are very brief, don't always list proportions, and are skimpy in preparation detail. If you purchase this and decide you want to try something, make sure you read the recipe over a few times to ensure that it flows and will work. For example, the fried chicken recipe instructs you to steep the chicken but there isn't enough liquid mentioned in the recipe for that, and the instructions on cooking the marinade are vague as they only specify that the liquid is heated. Since the marinade or steeping liquid includes carrots and turnips (yes, really) you have to assume that either water or broth was used and the mixture cooked until at least those vegetable were softened.
I suppose the recipes are in the tradition of the cooking like Grandma used to do, a pinch of this or a spoonful of that with most of the detail being committed to memory!
The title says that this is the first cookbook by an African American Chef. However, there is another book (available at Amazon), "What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking" that was published in 1881.
It's refreshing to read a title from the past .......2005-04-07
Dover Publications has reprinted Rufus Estes' Good Things to Eat: The First Cookbook by an African-American Chef, the first cookbook by an Afro-American chef, returning this time-lost 1911 culinary classic to print. It's refreshing to read a title from the past which doesn't skimp on the lard or the fats, and intriguing to read about Estes' Southern childhood and early years as a railway attendant, while the easy recipes for Baked Milk (an early form of custard), or Parsnip Fritters.

Good information, but not very usable.......2004-07-05
I really enjoyed the information in this book. It's the first of its type that I read, and the rationale for using herbs was wonderfully stated. The only problem I have with it is that she doesn't include doses clearly, making me feel like she's trying to drum up business instead of freely sharing information. I understand some things should be monitored, but other books freely offer dosages.

The photos were great and gave good detailing to the glass however many of the prices did not accurately reflect what Vaseline is selling for. Basically it's just an updated version of the older version with different pictures.

Great technical reference book -- not for the beginner.......1999-10-19
This book is not written for the "just want to make a little loganberry wine in the bathtub" set. It's a book suitable for the college course in viticulture (I imagine it is used or has been used as a text book at some schools with viticultural programs). The chemistry and biology sections are over the head for most. However, it is an excellent resource for those advanced winemakers who are looking for more technical information than provided in most home-winemaking books on the market. This book deals mostly with commercial wine production, although many of the principals are very useful to the home winemaker seeking to take his craft up a notch.
Thoroughly covers the wine making process........1998-07-26
This book combines both chemistry and current production techniques. This is not a "How to" book.
I have found this book as a nice reference when I have questions about the wine making process.
Customer Reviews:
Simple & concise; perfect for the first time wine kit maker........1999-11-18
Although this book is short, probably to keep it economical enough to entice consumers to make their own vino, the book is easy to read and straight to the point.
Ted has been making homemade wine for eons and his quick knowledge of the basic additives (chemicals), equipment and grape concentrate/juice is evident.
Ted works on the assumption that you know NOTHING about making wine and are only interested in learning the basics, especially working with the easy-to-use wine kits now readily available on the market.
He includes some handy tables, written in simple layman's terms, and a small trouble shooting guide.
My only criticism is that there is very little information on corks, bottles, shrink capsules and labelling. After all the book is only 48 pages short.
If you are looking for a quick read, this is it; we sell dozens of these books every month to new winemakers who don't have access to fresh grapes or a vineyard. It works for us up here in the great Northeast.

Book Description
The preeminent African American leader in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) took a conciliatory stance toward the White majority, preferring to work behind the scenes rather than publicly protesting to remedy discrimination and emphasizing education in the practical trades for the Black masses as opposed to a liberal arts education. While his approach won favor with prominent White politicians and businessmen, many Black intellectuals, including W.E.B. Du Bois, criticized Washington for his lack of public emphasis on civil rights and felt that his leadership style almost guaranteed segregation and second-class status for Blacks.
In MY LARGER EDUCATION, Washington lays out his philosophy of hard work and cooperative attitudes while describing the men and experiences that influenced his thinking and the impressive achievements of his Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute of Alabama. He also disagrees with his critics among Black intellectuals, stressing the importance of educating the Black masses by the use of everyday experiences and real-life problems.
With an introduction by Howard McGary, professor of philosophy at Rutgers University, MY LARGER EDUCATION remains an important document in African American history, and Washington's emphasis on economic empowerment for Blacks is a continuing theme to this day.
