Unique in itself.......2002-03-07
I love this series of books! I'm not a dog person at all. But these books are written in such a manner that you can not help but drawn into a world which is like no other. I wowed my friends this year when I started talking about Standard Poodles during the Westminster.

When I read this author for the first time I was looking for a writer who writes like the Cat Who series. In Laurien Berenson, I found a writer who is more serious, better prepared, and knows the show dog world. I think she is getting better with each book.

Sapolsky, a Stanford University neuroscientist, explores stress's role in heart disease, diabetes, growth retardation, memory loss, and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. He cites tantalizing studies of hyenas, baboons, and rodents, as well as of people of different cultures, to vividly make his points. And Sapolsky concludes with a hopeful chapter, titled "Managing Stress." Although he doesn't subscribe to the school of thought that hope cures all disease, Sapolsky highlights the studies that suggest we do have some control over stress-related ailments, based on how we perceive the stress and the kinds of social support we have.

Science even a Poly Sci Major can understand.......2007-09-28
Sapolsky presents a complex subject in language that a most people can understand, right along side the technical text. Thus, this old Poly Sci major finally understands the biology behind stress eating, even if I don't understand all the 12 syllable words in the next sentence. This is the way text books should be written. This is the way other books should be written -- understandable by people of many levels, not just the other specialists.

I agree with DR. Oliver Sachs who said on the back of the book, Dr/Professor Sapolsky is the best writer if physical science today. It is not for the faint of heart. He makes the subjects very clear, but it helps if you already have some science background because he brings you up to date on the current causes of the plagues of modern civilization (stress filled lives leading to the heart, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity etc. problems.
Awesome writing for a text book........2007-07-08
This book was chosen as the text book for a college course I took. It was awesomely written, very factual and easy to understand. And funny... Let me tell ya. I would gladly have read this for recreational purposes, but the fact that it was required to read it and it was so easy made it that much better.

Prof. Sapolsky way of teaching makes one feel he is sitting in the classroom at Stanford. This book has the same ambiance.

If you are the sort of cook who blanches when fresh, troll-caught king salmon costs more than $8 a pound, you're going to want to own a copy of Boston restaurateur Jasper White's Lobster at Home on the day you tumble for one or two of these shellfish kings in your local market. Lobster may well be relatively inexpensive in some parts of the country, but at anything from $9.99 to $13.99 a pound in cities where the delicious beasts from the deep must be flown in, well, a cook is likely to think twice about the purchase. Four Times.......2006-03-15
This is the fourth time I bought Lobster at Home. Three were gifts. I kept one. Good! (My recipe for boiled lobster (water+ celery, onion, seaweed) is better than his steamed. The other recipes, lobster bisque for instance, were great.
Sumptuous lobster dishes.......2004-05-08
This is a very useful cookbook for anyone who isn't quite sure how to tackle lobster. There's a lot of info such as how long to steam your lobster, and how many ounces of meat you're likely to get out of what size of lobster. The book includes recipes that call for lobster meat rather than whole lobsters, so if you're squeamish and don't want to buy whole critters, you can use those tubs of pre-cooked meat instead.
The recipes in here are truly inventive and luscious. How about the New England September Soup of Pumpkin, Sweet Corn and Lobster? Maybe Lobster Pizza, or Spaghetti with Lobster, Tomatoes and Capers, or Pappardelle with Lobster, Mushrooms, Shallots, and Cream. The baked stuffed lobster is one of the best recipes in this entire cookbook. We had this dish at Legal Seafood (where author/chef Jasper White has worked), but it wasn't as good as the one in the cookbook - the restaurant's stuffing tasted mostly like cracker, and this one has more to it than that.
If you have a strong stomach and don't mind mucking with live lobsters, you can enjoy this cookbook to the fullest. But there are truly very few recipes that you can't make by using pre-cooked lobster meat. Lobster Ravioli, Avocado and Lobster Salad with Toasted Almonds, Warm Green Salad with Lobster, Mineola Oranges & Citrus Vinaigrette, and so on. You'll find appetizers, sandwiches, cold plates, main courses, and even a section on "Great Lobsters from Great Chefs."
I'm not a lobster fiend like my husband, but I look forward to every use of this cookbook. Lobster meat may be expensive, but these recipes make a heck of a way to celebrate holidays and other special occasions.
Covers all aspects of the world of lobster.......2001-08-07
Mr. White's book is an excellent resource for everything lobster. He tells you where and how to buy your lobsters (even if you're not lucky enough to live in coastal New England). He talks about how the seasons affect the qaulity, quantity, and price of lobster. And for those who are intimidated by the prospect of eating a lobster (especially in public), Mr. White even includes a section on how to eat them!
The recipes include the essential steamed, boiled, or grilled lobsters, as well as salads, chowders, and soups. In addition, Mr. White provides excellent directions and variations for his wonderful Pan-roasted lobster. The book also includes recipes and detailed directions for such classics as Lobster Thermidore and Newburg.
This is all around an excellent book, and Mr. White's style makes lobsters much more approachable!
A quick note about Mr. Lafleur's comments: Perhaps he has a different "version" of the book (is there more than one version?), but my copy includes full-color pictures of some of the recipes, plus drawings of how to cut up the lobster, lobster anatomy, and various lobster prep/eating tools. I especially like the circular chart describing lobster availability/quality throughout the year.
Great recipes, homely book.......2000-12-19
I can't disagree with anything the previous reviewers have said; this is a great collection of lobster lore and recipes. However, the production values of this book fall far short of the premise, the cover, and the lobster itself. After you get past the cover, you will find cheap paper, no graphics or photos. It looks like it could be an extension service cookbook typed on a simple typewriter. I would not recommend this as a gift book if you are trying to impress someone.
A must have for a lobsterman.......2000-08-14
My husband and I have traps off of New Hampshire and I look forward to the various ways of preparing the lobsters we have during the summer and fall months. I especially liked the broth recipes, since I have so many bodies to dispose of. Since lobster freezes so well, I can enjoy lobster well into winter, thanks to a 21 cubic foot freezer and Mr. White's book.

Great Boxer Book.......2002-07-03
Author Stephanie Abraham put out another great book in 2000. Enough readers & critics enjoyed it to have it earn the same year's "Dog Writers Assoc of America" award. It's a handsome hardcover book with 220+ crisp pages. Pictures on just about every page. Abraham is dedicated to the Boxer breed. She speaks of the Boxer with admiration as only a Boxer owner could. She writes well and in easy to read fashion. Topics include caring for, general health, choosing your Boxer and traits to look for in a puppy, history, basic tips in training... and so much more. I refer to this book constantly. This is a very thorough book and anyone who owns a Boxer should own it. The only thing it doesn't mention - the older your Boxer gets, the more he slobbers. My family (including our Boxer, Max) is better off for it.

Just to state the fact that The Boxer: Family Favorite won the Dog Writers Association of America award as the Best Single Breed Book of the year 2000. This book is THE definitive in-depth study of the breed by someone who has spent her whole life living with and loving Boxers. The color photographs are outstanding.

This did not help to identify the bottles that I have. You have know what you have to look up the possible prices in this book.

The reproductions in this book are quite small,but very high quailty.As long as you have good eyes,you should be able to allreciate the artwork to full extent.

The Tiny Folio series is simply wonderful! As a frequent traveler who loves to discuss (share) art, I make it a habit to bring these miniature art books with me whenever I can.
This version showcases the Art Institute's well known pieces. Included are works from John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Toulouse-Latrec, Gauguin, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, and Suerat (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte).
Okay, that's a long list, but it's just a sample of what's inside!
The book offers a delightful mix of styles, concluding with Warhol, Mondrian, Lichtenstein and Pollock.
The pictures are, of course, quite small, but the book is too! That's what makes it so lovely! It can go anywhere. And never have I seen a better representation of such a variety of artists at such an inexpensive price.
(And, this is a book you can let the smallest toddler look at! It's just right for little hands!)
