Book Description

Can a vet detective catch a killer who's hopping mad?

Veterinarian and amateur sleuth Jessica Popper races down the rabbit hole and into a vintage case of passion and betrayal in Long Island's elite wine country in…

Hare Today, Dead Tomorrow

It's harvest time, but this season's crop includes chardonnay, merlot…and murder. The victim is heir to one of the North Fork's most prestigious wineries–and if the crime isn't shocking enough, the prime suspect is one of Jessie's closest friends!

Between managing her menagerie of pets, including Lou, the one-eyed Dalmatian, her tailless Westie, Max, and a tiger kitten who thinks she's queen of the jungle, commitment-phobic Jess struggles to adjust to a new addition to her household: live-in boyfriend Nick Burby. But even that proves easy compared to the challenge of catching a killer who's left nothing behind but a "hare"–a stuffed bunny rabbit. To clear her friend's name, Jess must maneuver through a warren of bizarre twists and more suspects than a bunny has offspring–and she'll need her own lucky rabbit's foot to avoid becoming this killer's next victim…

1 out of 5 stars Reads Like Wet Dog Smells.......2007-05-28

I bought this book at the local library's sale, at the recommendation of another shopper who thought the series was wonderful. The other reviews are positive as well, so maybe I am insane, but I thought this was a dreadful book. The author is in desperate need of an editor: for example,we read that a character is accused of stabbing someone in the hand with scissors, except that in the same chapter it is also referred to as "the pen incident." (Was it a pen instead of scissors in the first draft??) Problems surface immediately, as the book opens with a conversation between the heroine and her friend, who is sure she is about to be accused of murder. The author drops the information in a subsequent chapter that the heroine has JUST been released from the hospital. Did I miss something? Surely that kind of thing was introduced in the first chapter ... ah, no. Why our heroine wants to help someone who ignores her recent brush with death we don't know. Presumably the author made some attempt to give her characters a personality in earlier books, but not here. Here they just sort of wander through the story refusing to follow up clues and generally acting stupid. Even the animals are mostly background noise, welcoming her home or giving her an excuse to visit a location she wants to investigate. The crime itself is worse than the dumbest plot ever broadcast on Murder She Wrote (a show I enjoyed, btw): you have to believe that someone dying a gory, bloody death would assemble symbolic clues because she couldn't find writing materials in an office (forget that anyone with enough energy to grab this stuff could simply write the name of the killer with her own blood -- the fact that most offices would normally contain none of the items she used doesn't help matters). I made it to the end of the book, but mostly because I have a strong need for closure. I wasted my time reading this dreck -- I'm writing this as a public service to save you from wasting yours.

4 out of 5 stars Series Improves With Each Book.......2006-12-29

I've read several books in this series and find this to be the best so far (I haven't read the latest book). I only have one real complaint: I just don't like Jessie's boyfriend, Nick Burby. He's demanding, impatient, and has the emotional maturity of a 14 year old. He doesn't really seem to respect her or her feelings and I find it really annoying. He has no wit, no sense of humor and just doesn't seem to really like Jessie for herself. On the other hand, the reporter guy, whose name I forget, is witty and seems to like Jessie fine the way she is. I hope he reappers in future books.

5 out of 5 stars An unpredictable addition to the genre that will keep the reader begging for more of Jessica..........2006-07-06

On the North Fork of Long Island harvesters are working to gather grapes, and begin preparing some of the most delicious wines a mouth could ever taste. But on top of merlot and chardonnay, this season's crop includes one very to-die-for specialty...murder. The victim being the heiress to one of the North Fork's biggest and most prestigious wineries. And, as if that weren't enough to get Jess's wheels turning, the fact that her best friend is the prime suspect in the case, definitely has. Now, between working to keep her menagerie - including the one-eyed Dalmatian, Lou; a tiger kitten named Tink; and a tailless Westie named Max - calm, Jess is trying to get over her commitment-phobic ways, and adjust to the fact that her long-time boyfriend - and first-year law student - Nick Burby, is now living with her. But even the prospect of living in such close quarters with the harried Nick proves easy compared to the crazy twists and turns she's encountered as she plays a game of cat and mouse, trying to catch the killer, and clear her friend's name. Now, it's up to Jess to beat the killer at their game, as they set out to set Jess up for something that she never could have expected...her own death. And if she's not careful, and doesn't reveal the identity of the killer in the nick of time, she may just be dealing with something new - being six-feet under.

From the first time I picked up one of Cynthia Baxter's REIGNING CATS AND DOGS MYSTERIES, I knew that she had crafted something special, and that ingeniousness has only grown with each new installment in this spectacular series. Jessica Popper, as always, is exuberant, and lights up the pages of HARE TODAY, DEAD TOMORROW, as she plays the amateur sleuth - with smarts, sassiness, and a little bit of trickery - and lands herself smack dab in the middle of a whirlwind of a roller coaster ride that takes her all over Long Island. Baxter's descriptions of Long Island, from the North Fork, to the LIE (Long Island Expressway), to various hot spots dotting the community, make for an enjoyable thrill ride that will leave the reader gripping the edge of their seats. An impeccable, unpredictable addition to the amateur sleuth genre that will keep the reader begging - pardon the pun - for more of Jessica and her adorable menagerie of pets - and human pals!

5 out of 5 stars delightful amateur sleuth .......2006-04-25

Veterinarian Dr. Jessica Popper has a mobile practice using her van as her office in which she travels to her patients. She has so far also solved three homicide investigations. The last one got her poisoned and she had to stay in the hospital for forty-eight hours after getting her stomach pumped. When she gets out of the hospital all she wants to do is go home to bed but a call from her best friend and fellow vet Suzanne Fox has her going to her pal's house instead.

Suzanne tells Jessica that she is a suspect in the stabbing death of the fianc?e of her ex-husband because she was seen coming out of her home shortly before the body was discovered. A neighbor gave a description of Suzanne to the police. To make matters worse, Suzanne lied to the police, claiming she was never in the woman's house. The police know she lied to them and certain other evidence makes Suzanne the prime suspect forcing Jessica to start her own investigation to find the killer so she can clear her friend who she believes is innocent.

The latest "Reigning Cats and Dogs Mystery" is a very entertaining who done it. Cynthia Baxter has a knack for creating eccentric and dysfunctional characters who add humor even when they become prime suspects. The heroine is very easy to like as she not only stands by her friend but does all she can, even risks her own life, to prevent Suzanne from being arrested. Fans will appreciate the delightful amateur sleuth HARE TODAY, DEAD TOMORROW.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed reaction -- Has some merit.......2007-03-15

This novel is not a conventional sword/sorcery novel; such novels are set in an imaginary world, but their authors try to depict events in a credible and consistent way. Rather, this novel is more like Aladdin and the Lamp, or Alice in Wonderland, or Lovecraft's "Dream Quest of Unknown Kaddath." That is, it seems like a dream fantasy -- unfolding with all the associative confusion of someone's dream. The country appears to change from chapter to chapter, there are embedded folktales, and the fantasy is beyond extravagant at times. Even so, I was willing to grant Foster his premise-- but there are problems. Is Foster laughing at his readers?

Foster damages our willingness to "buy into" the story by interjecting strange passages that may (God help us!) reflect his sense of humor at our expense (I hope not!). Example: midway through the book, the lead character is swimming a river. He looks up and meets a talking frog wearing scuba gear. Yup -- flippers, mask, snorkel, the works. The conversation is brief and insignificant. The frog soon disappears -- but readers MUST wonder how they can possibly "suspend disbelief" when the author is indulging himself in such a foolish way. Let me assure you, Foster's putting the frog into present-day scuba gear garb is in NO WAY connected with anything else in the story.

On the plus side, there are some imaginative and rather original monsters, to include wind and earth elementals, as well as a "living wall" -- perhaps the oddest of all, but fun! And heck, there's that favorite of sword/sorcery novels, a magic sword!

I liked best the way Foster developed the warrior lead character -- a man understated, self-depreciating, humble -- but an impressive man and powerful wizard or magician to boot. He appears to be so much more than his own modest account of himself. I'm eager to see what Foster will do with him. I have to admit, I am curious to follow the adventures of the brave threesome into the next book.

I might add, on the level of the sentence and paragraph, and for vivid portrayal of a strange world, it stands up with the best of them.

But is it all just Foster's joke at our expense? -- remembering the frog in scuba gear, just for one example. Some authors have written almost too many books -- they are burned out, and don't appear to take seriously what they are doing any more.

3 out of 5 stars Vol. 1 of a 3-part Picaresque Novel with Magical Bits.......2004-06-18

"Journeys of the Catechist", of which "Carnivores of Light and Darkness" is part one, tells the story of three companions on a quest. Along the way, they meet up with all sorts of wonders and dangers. The companions include a wise herdsman, an avaricious swordsman, and an overgrown and carnivorous litah. Worth a read, but no new ground is broken here.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2003-02-21

Mr. Foster has written a best-seller in Carnivores of Light and Darkness. The story is quick, inventive, and exciting. My only complaint is that all the problems are solved with Ehomba pulling something out of his pack (It gets boring in the second book).

2 out of 5 stars Carnivores = A Dog of a Book (Woof).......2002-02-21

Let's see. I have a 3 book deal, so let's start with an interesting beginning and then send my hero on a VERY, VERY LONG journey. My hero really has no idea where he is going (NORTH!). Between the beginning of this book and the end of the third book, let's put everything I can think of into it to fill up the pages and get this series up to the 3 books I promised.

My problem with this book and the next one, Into the Thinking Kingdoms, is that what happens is not really relevant to advancing the original premise, it's just filler material. It reads more like a series of short stories or folk tales, none of them particularly compelling. I know its tough to hit a home run every time at the plate, but this one is pretty lightweight compared to most.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry but..........2001-07-06

Sorry but this is one of the worst books I have ever read. It starts off well with an intriging story and excellent characters. But the rest... it was imaginative but reads like a rough draft. The ideas expressed are elementry but the diction is far too technical, like he just bought a thesaurus and decided to play with it. There is no real character growth and everything is just too easy for the main character. I think this story has good characters and a good framework but is lacking in every other way.

          Book Description

The first generation of women to have tasted social, political, and economic empowerment-some thirty-seven million strong-has reached a new frontier that is unexpected and unexplored. Nearing their fifties and entering their sixties, they have fulfilled all the prescribed roles-daughter, wife, mother, employee; yet with longer life expectancy and better health they do not intend to retire from the world. They want to experience more. Inventing the Rest of Our Lives is an evocative and eye- opening road map across this uncharted terrain.

Suzanne Braun Levine, the first editor of Ms. magazine and a long-time journalist, has been reporting on the lives of women like herself throughout their tumultuous first adulthood. Here she draws on personal stories, cutting-edge science, up-to-date trend analysis, and her own struggles to show that Second Adulthood women are simply not the same people they were, only older; they are changing-both inside and out. The latest research she has uncovered proves it: Certain areas of their brains are undergoing a growth spurt very similar to that in adolescence, their sexual and emotional rhythms are readjusting along with their hormones, and their priorities are shifting dramatically.

From work to love, self-discovery to civic duty, health to economics, Inventing the Rest of Our Lives examines every aspect of their lives, offers solutions, and shares stories-sometimes touching, sometimes joyous-of women who have found insights and answers to the three crucial questions that each confronts: What matters? What works? What's next?

Inventing the Rest of Our Lives is a bold, honest, and sharp-witted guidebook, companion, and source of inspiration for every woman entering these uncharted waters.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing ..........2006-05-25

I was attracted to this book because I was turning 50 and finding it unexpectedly disturbing. The book was interesting enough but not very useful. I didn't really find out anything I didn't already know - other than there were a lot more women out there who were going through, or had been through, a similar re-evaluation. So while it was vaguely comforting, it wasn't at all inspiring or particuarly helpful. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone who hasn't had a traditional married-with-kids-plus-career lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative Thoughts for a Successful Transition.......2006-01-04

This book is at the top of my list as a must-read for all of my coaching clients trying to negotiate the slippery slope of mid-life transition. For the first time, we learn not only that we are different at mid-life and exactly HOW we are different. Inventing the Rest of Our Lives is both reassuring and instructional.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointed........2005-08-30

I was very much looking forward to reading this. I'm approaching my 40th birthday, and wanted to hear how others had dealt with this transition. In all fairness, Ms. Braun does interview many women on their transitions. However, the language is superificial, sometimes to the point of being annoyingly "cutesy". For example her term "Fertile Void" which is defined once, is used as a critical thread throughout the work, as though it's a sociological phenomena. If the book had been written about that term specifically, maybe things could have been interesting.
OK, there is a period of time where one doesn't know which path to take, but I hate labels, especially cute ones, especially when applied to grown-up women facing serious challenges. I need to lead myself into new terrain, and find my own voice, and I don't need cheerleading and labels. I found the "rah-rah" attitude really lame.
Worse still, the term "F-You Fifties"...I'm sorry, but I got over that language a long, long time ago. I don't think it's amusing.
One of the "success stories" was from a woman who, when she lights up her joints (marijuana) today, has much more pleasant trips. Frankly I felt offended and patronized, and I am no prude...I grew up on Ms. magazine, I went to a Seven Sister school, and I'm from NYC.
I was truly expecting More, as in that wonderful magazine for which Ms. Braun works...

I grew up on a lake and love fish- so the BEAUTIFUL illustrations, and cute chant is wonderful. It's creative and fun. I have spent a lot of time reading it to my nephew!I think even if you don't like fish it's still a cute, cute book. Even as an adult I still adore great kids books, and beautiful artwork!

5 out of 5 stars Fish Fanatics will FREAK-OUT!.......2007-05-25

The illustrations are humerous and entertaining! Any fish lover would appreciate this book. My 15-month old daughter even likes it (her dad reads it to her more like a cheer and she thinks that's GREAT!!!) Grandpa will be getting a copy for Father's Day. The variety of fish in here is unlike any other book I've seen (besides my fish identification book from college). If you do not know what all the fish are, there is a section in the back with an informative write-up on each of the fish in the book. I wish that Trip Park would come out with cards and stationary...or another book, maybe a child story book on fish life cycles or natural salmon runs? (I'm hoping he'll read this! Fish people are left hungry for more!!!) It's AWESOME.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, I Guess We Aren't Fish People - a review "Trout, Trout, Trout".......2006-08-29

The artwork in this book is wonderful and humorous; but to get your money's worth I think you have to be into fish more than normal people. My children (boy and girl; 4 and 6) for example were not gripped by the sort of frenzy that other reviewers report from their children.

They didn't appreciate the pictures as much as I did, and no one was gripped with an attack that necessitated us to a) read the book again, nor b) recite any of the text.

Now lest you think we don't appreciate poetry, we read and recite pieces all the time: everything from kid classics to bits of Shel Silverstein.

Three Stars. Great artwork. Probably a good purchase for the fish-loving set. Okay book otherwise.

An example of text follows so you can judge for yourself:

              Popeye Shiner, he looks mad.
              Stonecat.
              Blindcat.
              Shad.
              Shad.
              Shad!

              Waccamaw Killifish, see it pass?
              Largescale Stone roller.
              Bass.
              Bass.
              Bass.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book but not just for fishing folks!.......2006-06-14

This book is playful, funny, whimsical and witty all at once. The illustrations set it apart as a great childrens book. My son loves the rhymes and laughs if I get a good pace and point to all the animated fish characters. Get a copy for all fishermen you know and then those that want a great read for their little ones. The reference pages in the back are educational too so this can be used for lessons as well.

5 out of 5 stars great, great, great!.......2006-05-14

As an aspiring special education preschool teacher, I saw this book in a friend's collection and lusted for it in my heart! (Hence why I am on Amazon ordering it!!!) Great pictures for grabbing the attention of little readers, as well as fantastic silly rhymes. I can't wait to use it in my class!

This book is only meant for those with formal training in haircutting. It is a good reference book for students and fresh graduates of cosmetology. The diagrams were understood by me (I am a student at a local cosmetology school) but would confuse the average person. It is published by the same company who publishes our textbook, and I believe it was meant as purely a supplemental book to our basic education at cosmetology school.

I was looking for a book that could help me learn how to cut hair, this was not it. It may be a valuable book for people who already know how to cut hair but I found it to be fairly useless for beginners. It contains very little text and a lot of drawings which aren't really explained. Don't buy this book unless you already know how to cut hair.

                      Book Description

In her compelling memoir of personal transformation, Jane Bay takes us on a pilgrimage to India where we meet Tibetans, both exiles and those now suffering under Chinese oppression, and experience with her the liberating lessons of impermanence, compassion, commitment, and love. In this inspiring story, Bay's own metamorphosis is inextricably linked with the heroic struggle of the Tibetan people, and the Buddhist faith that is the source of their strength--and her own.

On her trip through India, Bay is accompanied by a Tibetan Buddhist monk, Lobsang Samten, through a series of adventures and spiritual passages that will change her life forever. While in Dharamsala, the present home of the Dalai Lama, she becomes the foster mother of a teenage girl at the Tibetan Children's Village. Unable to have children of her own, Bay becomes deeply involved in the life of her foster daughter, Namgyal, whose own mother had died in Tibet. A strong bond is forged between mother and daughter through many months of correspondence and Jane is devastated when she learns the Chinese government has forced Namgyal and other children studying in India to return to the "motherland." To refuse would endanger Namgyal's remaining family in Lhasa; ironically, going back to her homeland will endanger her own identity--the Chinese regime ruthlessly suppresses the study of Tibetan language, culture and religion.

In the hope of finding her foster daughter, Bay embarks on a journey to Tibet, again traveling with her spiritual friend, Lobsang, who returns at great personal risk after thirty-eight years in exile. He hopes to find his older brothers who were unable to escape when the Chinese army swept across the high Tibetan plateau in 1959. Their search takes them from the temples of Lhasa to towns brutalized by Chinese occupation, to destroyed monasteries, and remote nomadic outposts.

The author interweaves her own story with the experiences of the Tibetans she came to know and with Buddhist teachings that have helped to illuminate her contemporary personal odyssey. Her candid observations as well as her informative descriptions of current conditions in Tibet make this book a poignant and emotionally gripping story.

5 out of 5 stars A journey of surprises revealing a heroic struggle........1998-09-18

"Woven through a stimulating journey, filled with the surprises of travel in such an exotic land, are the wonderful pearls of Pablo Neruda, the Vajra-and-Bell Initiation, words from one of my favorites Chief Seattle, teachings of the Great Perfection and many more. Jane Bay's journey and narrative is the thread that holds the "Jewels" of this necklace as one piece. But most important of all, I gained from her book a new appreciation for the heroic struggle of the precious Tibetan people."

5 out of 5 stars a heartfelt and emotional journey - well worth the read.......1998-08-24

"Precious Jewels of Tibet" speaks to us from the heart as Jane Bay shares with the reader her innermost thoughts and feelings on her life as she embarks on an incredible journey of transformation. We are lucky to have Jane share her story with us. As we feel her joy and sorrow, we get in touch with our own painful and joyous journeys of self discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to anyone seeking inspiration........1998-06-11

Jane Bay has written a poignant memoire about her mystical journey to Tibet. How insightful it is for us to observe the allegory of her spiritual unfoldment, from her wounded life to wounded Tibet. Indeed, modernism has resolved a number of vicissitudes at the superficial realm of existence, but it has simultaneously magnified a piercing existential dismemberment, while escaping the most fundamental plight of the human being: the aspiration to surpass oneself, like The Buddha. Jane Bay has experienced an intimate experience of felicity. I recommend "Precious Jewels of Tibet" to anyone probing the same everlasting question : Who am I ? Graciously echoed by Jane Bay' s gifted prose, this book is a window to the quintessential matters of the soul, a longing that is invested right now, for each of us, with a very vital meaning.
