Book Description
Sister Fidelma-an Eognacht princess and sister to the king of Cashel, a religieuse of the Celtic Church and an advocate of the Brehornn court-is one of the most interesting and compelling figures in contemporary mystery fiction. In this collection of short mysteries, Tremayne fills in many of the background details of Fidelma and seventh-century Ireland not found in the novels, and weaves his always-beguiling mix of history and mystery.

The best way to meet Fidelma.......2004-09-28
Fidelma is an Eognacht princess, sister to the king of Cashel and respected advocate of the ancient Brehon laws, She is called upon to solve dark mysteries and murder most foul for Fidelma is a qualified dálaigh and if you haven't met her yet - then you're in for a very pleasant surprise. She's fiercely intelligent, clear-headed, analytical, stiff-necked, irritable and an all-round gutsy girl !
Hemlock at Vespers contains 15 stand-alone stories, perfect for the newcomer and the follower alike. It's the best way to meet the redheaded moody protagonist and dedicated Fidelma fans will love the stories and understand the reasons for her disillusionment with the House of Blessed Brigid
Celtic Short Stories!.......2003-04-23
I am usually not a fan of short stories. I prefer the longer mystery novels where there is time to develop characters and to embellish plots, but these 15 short stories of Sister Fidelma are well worth the effort. Yes, there is a lot of repetition by way of introduction for each story, but they are intended to be stand-alone stories and not every reader may see all the stories or have read the Sister Fidelma novels. But the stories were interesting because they were set up in the order of creation, and we see Fidelma developing as she goes along. There is such an array of settings, crimes and motives for each story that it keeps the interest of the reader. The descriptions of the countryside in the various seasons were what I enjoyed the most. The last story in the book has the best description of a snow storm that I've read. If you're a Sister Fidelma fan, you really should take the time to read these stories. You will not be disappointed.
Offensive and politically incorrect.......2002-03-16
I feel as though I have been victimized by a hate crime after reading Hemlock at Vespers. The short story, THE POISONED CHALICE is purposefully and demonically insulting to the Catholic faith. The murder weapon is the Most Blessed Blood of Christ which is blasphemy in itself. The character "sister" Fidelma is quoted as saying, "It is, to my mind, a warning of the dangers of believing what was meant as symbolism is , in fact, a reality" No greater insult can a Catholic imagine. Shame on you Peter Tremayne!
A good introduction into the world of Sister Fidelma.......2001-01-30
This book is a valuable read to anyone who has read the Sister Fidelma books or would like to. It gives great background and introduces you to her sleuthing style and personality. She is quick witted and clever with a biting tongue. Hers is a likable personality, which Hemlock at Vespers showcases. It's a must have!
Interesting series - except for the heroine.......2000-09-06
The premise of this series is beguiling: Tremayne choose enlightened 7th C. Ireland with a young woman lawyer/religuese/sleuth as protagonist. And indeed it works for the most part except that Sister Fidelma is a patronising, antagonistic, humorless little prig.
Hemlock at Vespers is a collection of short stories and Tremayne tries to soften Fidelma by, for example, repeating in EVERY story, usually by the second paragraph, how a few strands of rebellious red hair had escaped her headpiece. He even has her smile occasionally. But generally this woman is so stiff and obnoxious and difficult to like that it affected this reader's ablity to enjoy the collection.
I've read most of the books in this series and recommend "Death By Absolution". In book format rather than short stories, Sister Fidelma's pungent presence is diluted by the other characters and historical events, and makes for much more fascinating reading than Hemlock at Vespers.

Book Description
The fate of a world rests on an unlikely hero. . . .
Tucked away in peaceful Shady Vale, the young half-elf Shea Ohmsford gives little thought to the outside world. Yet far to the north, the evil Warlock Lord has dispatched shadowy Skull Bearers, creatures twisted by dark sorcery, to hunt him down. At the same time, a black-cloaked giant of a man appears in Shady Vale. He claims to be the mysterious Druid known as Allanon, a wizardly wanderer of vast knowledge and power–and he has come to see Shea. For Shea, he says, is the last descendant of an ancient Elven king. Only he, in all the world, can wield the fabled Sword of Shannara. And only the Sword can stop the Warlock Lord from destroying all that lives.
The Sword lies far from Shady Vale, in the Druid castle of Paranor. And Paranor has fallen under the shadow of the Warlock Lord. Yet all is not lost. Shea will rise to the challenge. Together with Allanon and a handful of brave companions, he begins a desperate quest into the very heart of evil. . . .
The Sword of Shannara Part 1: In the Shadow of the Warlock Lord is the newest addition to the Del Rey Imagine program, which offers the best in classic fantasy and science fiction for readers 12 and up.

Class Time!.......2006-06-22
Instead of writing a typical review like I normally do, I will instead attempt to educate you, internet user who picked to worst review to read (I'm not kidding, read the others) on what makes a person gullible. Ready? Good. Okay, late 70's Sword of Shannara first published and it sells. Dude writes sequals, they sell, and so on. As I write this Amozon sells this book new for $7.99 or used for as low as a penny. But his review isn't about Sword of Shannara, it's about Sword of Shannara : In the Shadow of the Warlock Lord aka what happens if a six year old manages to rip a book in thirds. This sells for $6.99, as do the second and third, which makes the grand total $20.97 a difference of $12.98, as compared to buying the actual book. QUIZ TIME! finish this famous quote, "a fool and his money are ... "
good beginning... next books are much better.......2005-09-01
To me this book was an almost unbelievable rip off of the Lord of the Rings series... reading about Terry Brooks he even says that he was influenced by Tolkien in his younger days. That being said, if you can tough it out through this book, ALL of the other Shannara books and series are well worth reading. There are some direct parallels and some original ideas, it wasn't quite all a copy of Lord of the Rings... The writing is good, though maybe a bit unoriginal. This was my least favorite Shannara series book just because it seemed to be such a ripoff of Tolkien. I still enjoyed the book and would recommend it, just be warned that it is similar to LOTR. It does set the stage for the other books in this series and the other Shannara series books, and is worth reading just for that. None of those are anything like Lord of the Rings and Terry Brooks' creativity shines through in those. I also went on to read the Magic Kingdom of Landover series which are also good.
One of the Best!.......2003-05-14
I have loved the Shannara series for many years. They have resulted in many of sleepless nights of fighting the clock while repeating the phrase, "just one more chapter." This is a series that is intriguing and beautifully written. I promise you will not be disappointed!
Half and half.......2003-05-04
Terry Brooks jump-started the realm of derivative fantasy with "Sword of Shannara," an unoriginal but pleasant fantasy adventure with your basic elves, dwarves, druids gnomes and medieval humans. While the book itself is fairly enjoyable, there's a not-so-pleasant surprise in store for fans who purchase "In the Shadow of the Warlock Lord."
Shea Ohmsford is not like the other inhabitants of Shady Vale -- he's part Elf. Despite this, he's always been one of the boys in his sheltered village with his adopted family, until the day the Druid Allanon arrives to tell him of his destiny; he's the descendant of the legendary Jerle Shannara, and the one who can use the Sword of Shannara against the Warlock Lord. Dark forces are clustering around Shady Vale, and soon Shea is forced to leave with his brother Flick, on a quest to find the sword.
The problem with this book is... it's not a new book. It's not even a complete book; rather, it appears to be half of the preexisting "Sword of Shannara" novel. In the manner of the split Robert Jordan novel, the first book of the Shannara series has been cut into parts and is being sold as separate volumes. Aside from this detail, those intimidated by the size of the complete novel may prefer this book. Others may be severely disappointed by the lack of conclusion in this book.
... His writing is descriptive, a bit overblown, but not too badly. His characters, while not earth-shattering, are pleasant and likable, such as the reluctant hero Shea and his more suspicious brother Flick.
While the concept of repackaging the Shannara books for kids and young adults is an interesting one, there is little warning that this is not a new story, but merely a preexisting one split into parts. Give it a miss if you already have it.

Practical, tangible and fast SELF-help.......2007-07-24
If you want fast, tangible and significant results this is the book to get. I caught my clenching and/or bruxing early. However I'd chipped a rear molar in my my sleep. Both of my rear molar were extremely temperature and pressure sensitive to the point that eating, drinking and tooth brushing were pure misery. I suffered from a constant sick headache, and if I happened to accidently graze a rear-upper molar with a lower one, the pain just about sent me through the roof.
I seriously had visions of having both of those teeth pulled as they hurt almost as much as a bona fide toothache. Sadly the book told of people who had done exactly that under similar circumstances, but to their sorrow despite the missing teeth the pain remained. Hence the cause wasn't a dental one per se.
I followed the books directions, and along with one of those mouth guards that you boil in water, the results were nothing short of miraculous. Once the book made me realize which muscles were responsible for the transferred pain in my upper-rear molars, hot compresses provided short-term quick and tangible relief against them and also pressed against my cheeks and jaw joint and muscles. The stretches and exercises provided the long-term results I'd say that easily alleviated over 99 percent of my discomfort that is gone nearly all of the time now. When I do have an occasional twinge, I simply redo some of the stretching and strengthening exercises, and I'm good to go.
Just as an FYI my TMJ flared up shortly after I began the See Clearly Method for myopia. I've no idea if there was a correlation, but another reviewer made a similar observation. I'd urge the potential reader and TMJ sufferer to get this book first before they immediately jump to allopathic surgical procedures that are irreversible and sometimes not only don't help but makes things far worse. I sincerely hope this helps whoever may read this. And I am very grateful to the author for this invaluable book that came to my awareness in such a timely fashion.
Very helpful.......2007-06-27
I bought this based on reviews, and was not disappointed. The exercises really help. I realized how bad my posture was!
This book helped me get my life back.......2007-05-20
I have been suffering with myofascial pain for over 4 years. I have been diagnosed as having trigeminal neuralgia and prescribed Neurontin for the pain. I have seen doctors, dentists, neurologists, and chiropractors. I have been x-rayed, CT scanned and MRI-ed, all with no indication of what was troubling me. Fortunately for me Jehovah God answered my prayers for help and I met Dr. Martha Cortés. While conducting an interview with her for Doctor of Dentistry magazine, I had a pain spasm which she quickly noticed. She took one look into my mouth and immediately diagnosed the problem and suggested that I get a partial plate to help retrain the muscles in my jaw. On that tip I did further research which lead me to this book. The book is quite easy to read and understand. I developed a total health plan suggested by the author and within one week I was seeing amazing results. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with facial pain and to dentists as well.
You Might Have TMJ.......2007-04-26
http://www.uslink.net/~uppgaard/jmpsttreat.htm
The above link is from the author's website; if it helps you, it is only the beginning of the advise he offers in his book.
TCOTMJ is well-written and offers inexpensive treatment for the pain caused by TMJ. If you think you might have TMJ just ask yourself this: does your face hurt? Your jaw? Your neck? If you said yes at least once, just assume you've got TMJ right now and buy this book. Really.
It will help make you more aware of your own body, which really, really helps you avoid doing things that can cause pain (for example, I have just read that crossing my legs when I sit messes with my posture, my muscle alignment, and hence my jaw. I cross my legs allthe time, and now I am learning to catch myself and stop it).
The author of this book seems to have devoted himself to TMJ treatment, and appears to be under-selling his book on amazon. I for one feel more than happy to part with my [...] to thank this man for the help he's given me with my own pain and that of my boyfriend, who has had TMJ for years, and hopefully neither of us will ever need surgery for it!!
(since I started writing this I have un-crossed my legs 3 times! Thank goodness for this book!)
I may frame the cover and hang it on my wall.......2007-02-08
I'm no the type to write reviews but ever since I was in a car wreck of ten years ago I've suffered with headaches, facial, and neck pain. I've been to every doctor under the sun, had ct scans, been subscribed meds, ect and so on. After being in pain for so long I developed anexity and thought something was wrong with me because I knew I was hurting although the doctors always said nothing was wrong.
Honest this book could change my life. I got immediate relief from the exercises and the simple fact that if I slightly touch my tounge to the top of my mouth and slightly keep my teeth apart my jaw would relax and I couldnt pop it. I still need to work on my anxiety but this book and the exercises have giving me immediate relief.
I can't recommend it enough and if anyone suffers with jaw popping and pain its well worth the ten bucks. I only wish I would have read it years ago.

Book Description
Chuck Shaw is a vanishing breed--an old-style veterinarian with a quarter of a century of experience who runs a "mixed practice" in rural New Hampshire, treating everything from house cats to milk cows. Week after demanding week, he and his associate, horse expert Roger Osinchuk, make house calls and farm calls, and spend sleepless nights on call, to see to the well-being of patients whose only common denominator is an inability to speak. But the practice is booming, and Chuck decides to take on a third associate, Erika Bruner, fresh out of veterinary school.
Whynott follows these three practitioners into the world of contemporary veterinary medicine, as a witness to memorable encounters and daily dilemmas. He watches as they play gynecologist to cows and horses, obstetrician to calves and colts, podiatrist to creatures whose feet are life and death to them. He captures the struggle to learn a difficult craft on the job, describes the confluence of skill and intuition that is the essence of diagnosis, and depicts the ongoing effort to balance the needs and desires of animals and owners without compromising his creed. A Country Practice is a vivid portrait of the rapidly changing face of an ancient profession.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't compare to James Herriot's books.......2006-02-22
If you are looking for a book like All Creatures Great and Small, this book isn't for you. James Herriot is the ultimate writer in this category, and it is hard to find any authors that compare to him. As far as this book goes, I found the writing style hard to read and somewhat disjointed, since it is being written by an outside observer. It isn't a smooth read. Also, most of the book is about the trials of being a vet and owning your own vet practice. If you are a vet student or another vet, you might find it interesting. But for the average reader there aren't a lot of animal stories in it. The only reason I found it OK was that I am a dairy farmer and was interested in the types of problems this vet encountered in the dairy herds he visited. Also, I live in Vermont, close to this vet's location, and I knew some of the dairy farmers he had as customers. However, if you are looking for more animal stories like James Herriot's, I can't recommend this book. Instead, I would recommend books by Dr. John McCormack or books by Dr. David Perrin.
Portrait of a Veterinary Practice.......2005-04-09
Dedicated in memory of Bob Zeidler, an Amazon reviewer.
Hobbs the current clinic cat was a survivor. He had once been a feral cat and somehow found himself in the Walpole, New Hampshire Veterinary Clinic. Fat and sassy and beloved by all.
The author, Douglas Whynott followed Chuck Shaw, Vet practice owner, and Roger Osinchuk, his associate for a year learning the ins and outs of a veterinary clinic that saw a mixed practice. Mixed practice in this sense means large and small animals. That is quite an ark full, so to speak. This kind of practice can run a man into the ground, particularly when you are on call every other night and every other weekend. The stories of the owners and their animals and the struggles of daily life become real and vivid in this engaging novel.
As the practice grows, Chuck and Roger decide they need to take on a third associate. Erika Bruner, a fresh graduate from Tufts Vet School, an intelligent, articulate woman answers the call. Thus begins her first year of a grueling, grinding profession. Erika allows us into her life, her emotions, her ups and downs, her insecurities and the struggles she encounters as she starts her job. The cows, yes, always the cows, the joys of examining cows by first removing all of the feces in the anus, and then examining the cows with a long sleeve on the arm and the "feel" of the insides of the cow. This is how one goes about finding out if a cow is pregnant or ready for pregnancy. Vermont and New Hampshire are farm country and cows are a specialty. We get inside the farmer's minds and how they practice their craft- how they care for their animals. A fascinating study of farm life and the people involved.
Chuck Shaw the Vet in charge is an honest, silent man. Straight forward and truthful, he is a Vietnam vet. Ready for anything, but getting tired of the life of a vet. Roger Osinchuk, the associate has a love of horses and with his skill he develops the practice of horses and in his own life grooms the champion of horses, Shawne. Chuck is married and he and his wife try to have a normal life, sometime having dinner at 11pm after a harried night call. Roger is in love and during this year proposes and gets married to a girl he met in Alberta. He is five years into his practice with Chuck. The other staff in the Vet practice tells a tale of a dedicated staff who love animals and give much, too much at times.
"Country Practice" is a tale of the love of animals. The profession of caring for and loving those animals is a big part of this story. The lives of those involved tell the intimate stories of life in rural New Hampshire. I have much more gratitude and understanding of a veterinarian's life. The life and death of our animals, a big part of our families, is in good hands in the Walpole Vet Clinic . Highly recommended. prisrob
An in-depth view of the personalities and procedures.......2004-11-09
There are plenty of cute, endearing animals in Chuck Shaw's Walpole, NH, veterinary practice. Hobbs, for instance, the clinic cat, an obese fellow who gorges on junk food, perhaps in memory of his feral days, and reverts to wild ferocity whenever the whim strikes him. But these animals afford mostly comic relief in Whynott's behind-the-scenes portrait: a serious tale of human drama; of passion, ethics and personalities.
Chuck Shaw is a focused man who chose his work after serious deliberation and before going to Vietnam as a bomber pilot. He wanted a well-lived life in a profession that involved physical activity, outdoor work, and the prospect of working with people and helping others. He also wanted to be independent and own his own business. Veterinary medicine fit the bill and after two years in practices that didn't quite fit him, he bought a "mixed practice" in bucolic, beautiful Walpole.
A mixed practice is unusual these days and growing more so, involving both large animals and small. Chuck might spend the morning checking a dairy herd for pregnancies, the afternoon treating cats and dogs at the clinic and be called out at midnight for an emergency lambing or an "HBC" (dog hit by car). Over the years Chuck had gone through eight associate vets who stayed from a few months to four years.
Roger Osinchuk, the best fit, is beginning his fifth year in the practice as the book ends. Osinchuk, a Canadian from Alberta, grew up wanting to be a veterinarian. His experience with horses is extensive and he quickly builds an equine practice and embarks on a side business breeding and training horses of his own.
Roger, exhausted by the long hours and the on-call weekends, convinces Chuck to hire a third associate - not an easy task for a mixed practice in a rural community. Erika Bruner, a new graduate from a suburban, academic background, wants to work with cows. She likes getting mud and manure on her boots, enjoys the placid, wise look of the cow, and doesn't flinch at being shoulder deep in the animal's anal tract. Enthusiastic and determined, she lifts everyone's spirits. At first.
Whynott spends long days with each of these people, getting them to talk while they work. They talk about the work, and Whynott describes it in details that range from fascinating to gross, often at the same time. They save animals and lose them and Whynott shows us their jubilation and sadness - and sometimes their self-doubt. Inexperienced Erika has a lot of that, but no one is immune.
The patients can't talk, and, not owning their own bodies, have no say in their treatment or even their death. From cows who don't produce enough milk to dogs that bite, death is sometimes the only treatment the owner wants and this is a critical issue in the practice, particularly with pets. Though Chuck early on makes it a rule not to kill healthy pets, it's a rule he sometimes has to break. During Erika's first months a healthy dog is brought in to be put down. The owner refuses to have it adopted by someone else and so Chuck orders it done. Erika is shocked and furious, but Chuck explains that the owner would only have abandoned the dog or had a neighbor kill it. At least he had the power to end the animal's life humanely.
Ethical dilemmas are frequent in a practice where the doctors are surgeons, cancer specialists, emergency doctors, radiologists, dermatologists, obstetricians, etc., and the patients are property. Overwork and underpay (beginning associates with $100,000-plus in debts earn $45,000 a year) also fuel frustration.
Whynott's ("Giant Bluefin," "Following the Bloom) portrayals are moving and involving. He is a mostly invisible observer. Though it's clear people are talking to him, he makes no judgments and offers no personal comments. Traveling with the veterinarians through the beautiful Connecticut River countryside, he shows us the working farms, which each have their own owner-imposed personalities, and the hobby farms with their horses and pet pigs and sheep (which are generally cheerier places, even if the owners are sometimes clueless). He gives us the drama of daily life in the practice, and shows how the underlying dynamics change with the entry of a newcomer.
This is an absorbing inside look at a changing profession and the interplay of personalities between a veteran owner, an experienced young man with ambitions of his own, and a neophyte struggling to find her place. A book to be enjoyed by anyone who likes animals and a must for aspiring veterinarians.

Book Description
Miller's Collector's Guides is a series of books aimed at providing an essential introduction to varied and popular subjects for the budding collector. Reflecting the growing trend in the antiques market towards "collectibles" (small, often affordable items) these practical guides are filled with ideas on how to form a collection, what to specialize in, and how to identify objects. Often showing specially photographed items, these are guides no collector can afford to be without.
Book Description
“The authors describe and demonstrate the variety of projects that can be created from these patterns—wall hangings, holiday decorations, door stops, key rings, candle holders, switch plates, and decorative shelves. In addition, the standard patterns for animal figures, vehicles, nature scenes, and common folk-art images can be used by innovative craftspersons who work in media such as quilts, appliqué, stained glass, stencils, and jewelry.”—Booklist.

After decades as an army wife, Kristine Kelly isn't sure how to handle the transition back to civilian life after her husband Logan disappears with their savings. Unable to handle the finances and shocked by the anger her children have towards their absent father, Kristine turns to alcohol for comfort, an act that only pushes her children further away. But with the help of friend Aaron Dunwoodie, Kristine sobers up, reunites with her grown children, and enjoys a burgeoning romance with Aaron. Just as her life is back in order, Logan reappears, claiming that he is dying and desperate for attention. When Kristine delays her marriage to Aaron in order to play nursemaid to Logan, it looks as if she may once again submit herself to Logan's will. Celebration is a moving portrayal of a woman's struggle to find courage and independence after abandonment by her husband, and is a thoroughly engaging read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Customer Reviews:
Fern Michaels is a pseudonym.......2003-09-26
Fern Michaels is a pseudonym for Mary Kuczkir and Roberta Anderson. If you notice, a lot of the reviews on Amazon are by Mary Kuczkir. No wonder this book has an average of 4 stars. I would have given it zero stars but the scale wouldn't allow for that.
Celebration.......2001-06-23
This book was amazing. The plots kept coming and I couldn't put it down. It was a little bit long, and repetive, but her overall style is personally appealling to me. I felt like I knew Kristene and when I was finished, I felt almost sad, that it was over, and I wouldn't be able to read more about her. The ending was great, and I really enjoyed it.
Too long, unbelievable, but at least entertaining.......2001-04-20
This is the second novel by Fern Michaels that I have read and I definitely agree that while I get hooked by the book jackets, she tends to go on far too long. This book could have been about 150 pages less and been much better. While I enjoyed the story for the most part, I found myself groaning that anyone could be so stupid as Kristine and let her swindling husband back in her life after he cheated her out of her money and left her high and dry. While some might view it as compassion, I think it was just a little far fetched. Woodie was a little too complacent for me and the fact that he just sat around and waited and then got drunk anytime Kristine left him hanging was a little unbelievable. Logan was evil and fun to hate and the other characters were interesting although kind of flat. Some of the plot twists to connect everything together were a little silly - how small a world can this be for heaven's sake? But overall, not too bad.
Ridiculous!.......2001-04-01
This was one of the worst romance novels I've ever read. I expect to have to suspend my disbelief somewhat, but this book was ridiculous. The dialogue was beyond believeable, the situations were contrived, the characters were not appealing. The heroine was a total weak-spined wimp. I cannot believe there are so many people who enjoyed this book. Don't waste your money or your time. It does not get better as it goes on.
A long, but enjoyable read.......2001-02-13
I, too, found myself cheering for Kristine. Co-dependent relationships happen all the time and I'm glad the author addressed this issue. It was a great ending. I'm not sure she deserved Woody, but I'm glad they ended up together. Ms. Michaels referred to the tense relationship between parent and child at the beginning and then Kristine later refers to her parents as being, 'great' and 'there for her', etc. It was confusing, but maybe that mysterious money that popped up at the end changed her views on 'those rotten parents'....That along with that 'weird' slave trading story were misplaced in the story and I wanted it to end sooner, but I was glad to see that Kristine didn't cave in when Logan returned. Give it a chance.

Despite everything, a very good book.......2002-12-29
CELEBRATION! concludes the Wagons West Series, and sets the stage for THE HOLTS series. This book does a good job wrapping up the various plots ongoing in the series. Henry Blake finally has his showdown with Buehler, and Toby does his best to foil the plot to detroy the torch that will one day be part of the Statue of Liberty. How the two stories entertwined was wonderful. Even Blackstone's attempts to smuggle rubber seeds out of Brazil did not distract from the book.
However, there was again some needless plot complications. Why bother sending Henry to the 7th Cavalry to be with Custer, and then move him from there just before the Last Stand? Why the incident in Alaska? This dropped the book down to a four.

Author's book summary.......2002-05-04
So many times have I worked on a dying patient frantically trying to breathe life into a lifeless body. And many times have I questioned myself, "Why don't you give up?" The title of my memoir, "By All Means, Resuscitate," says, "no matter the consequences or the effort required, keep my life going with the caveat: that my intellectual capacity not be impaired." Though my life has not always been happy, it has been fascinating. Some of the high points of my story are:
the closing of a circle beginning with the journey of my grandfather from Europe and my parents to the U.S. and my eventual "aliyah" to Israel.
my Harvard Medical School education -- as the fourth brother in the family to be an M.D.
my evolution from a 'double-talking physician hiding fatal cancer diagnoses from patients to a proponent of assisted suicide to the terminally ill (with a deep bow of humility to the occasional terminal prognosis that mysteriously reverses itself.)
my courtship of my wife by playing duets, she on the violin, I, on the cello.
my delight in my family -- two daughters (one now an M.D.) and a son (now a micro-biologist) and my anguish in not being able to save my other beautiful daughter, a manic-depressive, from suicide.
my encouragement of -- and fear about -- my wife's decision to heal her niece by donating a kidney to her.
my fights against anti-Semitism and segregation in my small Pennsylvania town.
the efforts of my wife and myself to save Russian Jews.
our adaptation to life in Israel, including my often frustrating, sometimes comic, struggles to learn Hebrew, and our lives, and those of our children and grandchildren during the Gulf War -- and beyond ...
A Rich and Rewarding Read!.......2002-04-24
In this fascinating memoir, Dr. David Chamovitz comes across as a Renaissance man of many passions: medicine, music (he plays a mellow cello), family, Judaism, civil rights, Israel. Rescuer of many Russian Jews and compassionate cardiologist to countless patients in the U.S. and Israel, he poignantly relates how he could not save his own beautiful, manic-depressivedaughter from suicide. The author has been frank in revealing his personality, including even a couple of "warts." But that's what makes him, as a characterin his story, so appealing. I enjoy his humor, I empathize with his anguish, and I understand his rages. I was really impressed by the spirituality of a self-proclaimed "rationalist" that comes through in his book. This is a rich and rewarding read.
A TRUE PAGE-TURNER.......2002-03-29
Every moment of leisure that I have, I have been reading this wonderful book and have finally finished it, although like every other page turner that I have read, I did not want it to end! I vote for a sequel.
Inspriring surprise!.......2002-03-21
What a surprise! Self-published autobiographies are often self-aggrandizing, poorly written, trite accounts of otherwise mundane lives. Not so "By all means resuscitate". This book is a mixture of "Sundays with Morry", "Chicken Soup for the sole" and "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe". More a collection of short stories than a coherent novel, Chamovitz has succeeded in presenting relevant parts of his life in a scope that evokes laughter, tears and interest. Major events of the 20th century were played out in Chamovitz's small-town existence, like taking a black to the all-white neighborhood pool in the 60's, dealing with the suicide of an emotionally distressed teenager, and the medical-moral evolution of a patronistic Harvard-educated doctor, to an acceptance of assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Chamovitz's life has obviously been one of continual growth, and an example to all of us who merely accept our daily lives as is. A very easy and enjoyable read!
