Average Grimes better Than Most.......2007-07-02
I Am the Only Running Footman, by Martha Grimes, is the 8th book in this excellent series. This entry features the mystery surrounding the murder of a blonde shopgirl in Mayfair. The murder, a strangling with a scarf, is eerily similar to a previous murder in devon; investigated by Brian Macalvie (introduced in Help the Poor Struggler). This is a decent entry in the series. Melrose and Macalvie are in fine form, as is Jury. nother very strong entry in this compelling series. A solid 3 star novel.
For those of you new to the series, I would recommend reading them in order for the best reading experience; however, they are also fun as stand alone novels.
Here is the series in order:
The Man with a Load of Mischief
The Old Fox Deceived
The Anodyne Necklace
The Dirty Duck
Jerusalem Inn
Help the Poor Struggler
The Deer Leap
I am the only Running Footman
The Five Bells and Bladebone
The Old Silent
The Old Contemptibles
The Horse You Came In on
Rainbow's End
The Case has Altered
The Stargazey
The Lamorna Wink
The Blue Last
The Grave Maurice
The Winds of Change
The Old Wine Shades

Bonded.......2005-08-08
The deceased, Sheila Broome, lived in Exeter. Racer disturbed Richard Jury to call him to the crime scene. It is another death, that of Ivy Childess, that causes Wiggins to make the conection between Ivy Childess and Sheila Broome because of the manner of death.
As connections are teased out laboriously by everyone including Melrose Plant and Marshall Trueblood, it is determined that the members of the Winslow family were bonded to each other. The two murders had to do with the accidental death of a child, Phoebe Winslow.
As in every other instance that I know of, this Martha Grimes novel contains excellent writing coupled with interesting and compelling material. She is a first rate practitioner of the craft of crime fiction.
A Richard Jury Mystery Series.......2005-06-29
I find myself a little addicted to the recurring characters in this series and enjoy following their lives. I can't help thinking I missed something when I found Richard Jury in a relationship with someone I know nearly nothing about.
I like the writing and images created of people, homes, buildings, art and all around. I also felt at the end that I might again have missed something. All the loose ends were not quite tied up as they usually are. I had more questions than answers. What really happened to Rose and did she leave or was she the first? Hopefully in the next book I will find some of the answers. I recommend this series and author. I found the series much later than they were actually published and had to purchase all in the series before I could begin reading the first one. I have not been disappointed.
Another Richard Jury novel.......2003-03-08
This is a reprint of a novel copyrighted in 1986. As in other novels by this author, the title is the name of a pub. Inspector Jury is joined again by Melrose Plant who has an estate near Long Piddleton on the River Piddle. In this novel, Jury is assigned to a case where a young woman has been strangled with her own scarf. The investigation reopens an older, unsolved case where another young woman was also strangled with her own scarf. Inquiries into the pasts of the two women turn up love affairs that may be related - both women were sleeping around to some degree.
The questions are whether these are serial killings or well-planned murders, and what would be the motive. Various odd characters are introduced including the odd family that owns and operates the Mortal Man. While the plot is interesting, digressions into discussions of the various characters (many not involved in the main plot) tends to detract from the main story line. At times, the story seems to wander.
When events are finally drawn together, it seems a bit abrupt. The story comes to a climax as the solution to the mystery is revealed, but it seems to leave some loose ends. A short added chapter might have closed things out better. One is left to wonder what finally happened to some of the characters.
Another great Richard Jury adventure!.......2001-11-28
After reading "I am the Only Running Footman" I am again satisfied with yet another great Martha Grimes novel. Her stories contain a great collection of mystery crimes with the lead detective being Richard Jury. In this book, Richard has to team up with an old rival in order to solve one of this centuries greatest cases, the scarves murder. But there seem to be no leads. So will Jury and arch rival Macalvie be able to put their past behind them and solve this crime, or will there be yet another victim of the fatal scarves.

Read along w/ Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Book for a well rounded view.......2007-08-13
This is a very readable book written by the wife of a man who developed Alzheimer's disease at a young age, when their children ranged from infancy to age 12. She taught herself to cope with his condition, and now lectures and advocates for the patients, the caretakers of the patients, and their families. The book is strong on the day to day care of the demented patients, how to help them stay engaged with the world, how to help them retain speech and their remaining abilities as long as possible. She sees them as people for as long as they live, and wants their families, caretakers and society to see them that way too. It is very strong in its compassion and loving good heartedness, and in seeing these demented, often paranoid, confused, sometimes combative persons as the person he or she once was, not as they seem to be now.
She brings up excellent points: that no longer do experts try to bring the disoriented or confused person "back to reality", for example, if a patient thinks her father who died in 1950 visited her don't argue or try to "re-orient" her on this subject. It is not worth upsetting the person, has no long term value, and needlessly confuses and worries the person. The same with combative behavior, in most cases a change in subject, or distraction, rather than physical over powering or medical sedation is better, more kind and gentle, and keeping a log of what triggers such behavior can defuse it in the future.
This book does have some problems for me, as a caretaker for a parent with early dementia. The author seems to assume the caretaker has no other job, or life for that matter, and that there are others to pitch in and help with the caretaking chores, and funds to hire helpers. Some of her suggestions, the long leisurely breakfasts, rides in the country, reviewing old scrapbooks, or retraining the person with little games she provides (which sound excellent by the way) are frustrating for the caregiver whose time is limited by constraints of work or another family's needs as well. There is enough guilt in this caretaking situation without having to deal with chapters headed: "Enrich the Patient's Life".
Nevertheless, it is a very good book and its consistant re-focus on the humanity of the patient makes it stand out among books of its kind.
I'd pair it with the book "Mayo Clinic on Alzheimer Disease" which goes much more thoroughly into the aspect of dementia as an illness, what goes wrong in the brain and body, current medications, testing, and so on---this book does not cover those areas. I do recommend it, but not as my first recommendation among these books but paired with the Mayo Clinic book I think you'd have a good set for knowledge of and caretaking skills of the dementing illnesses.

High Praise from stress-relief expert/author, "Your Present: A Half-Hour of Peace".......2007-05-26
I seldom recommend a book this highly, but if you care for someone with dementia or other loss-of-independence disorders get, read, and keep, "Learning to Speak Alzheimers" as a well-indexed resource. A remarkably practical, insightful guide, I've used it personally and found it an invaluable companion, especially at the beginning of our journey, as this heartbreaking disease began erasing parts of our loved one from the inside-out. I share it whenever my own clients are finding their ways through the extraordinary stress and fatigue of caring for someone with dementia, and have given it as gifts to nursing home professionals. A fabulous book of techniques and strategies for compassionate, realistic, caregiving. Some good recipes, but terminal case of "the cutes".......2006-06-04
I would recommend borrowing this book from your library before buying, as this is not your typical cookbook.
The layout is very busy with graphics and informational tidbits, giving the book a very cluttered appearance. All of the recipes have silly names, most of which give you no clue as to what's being made. You either like the style or you don't. I found it annoying to wade through for the most part. On the other hand, your children might like the style.
You are probably best off copying the recipes you like onto plain paper/recipe cards so you don't get distracted when making them up, and just keep the book for reading like you would any other.
Lowfat Made Fun!.......2006-04-09
This cookbook is zany, fun, and easy to read. It includes over 150 recipes, and has fun food facts intermixed. It has food trivia, exercise tips, and talks about eating quality foods. The recipes are easy to prepare, and have quirky names such as Miss American Thigh, Starvin' Guy Chicken Pie, "Dressed to Grill" Pork Chops, The Rice is Right, and Glazed and Confused Carrots.
Most of the recipes have 7 grams of fat or less per serving, and include ingredients that you can find at most grocery stores. My kids loved the food too...and looking at the book always makes me smile.
The thing that kept me from rating this book a 5 star is that it did not include pictures of the food. I like to look at the pictures of the food before I try an item...this often helps in the presentation, and to determine if my kids will try it.
Definitely a cookbook to add to your collection. Enjoy!
Delicious and Delightful!!.......2004-07-01
The recipes are easy, the stories, jokes and comparisons are great, and there is a section of some absolutely delicious vegetarian recipes -- I loved both Looneyspoons and Crazy Plates.
Bright Blessings!
great low fat cookbook.......2004-05-11
This cookbook is awesome. The recipes are easy to make and great tasting and the book itself is full of little cartoons and tidbits of information. I read the whole book cover to cover, not bad for a cookbook. If you get this book, I definitely recommend the NYPD Blueberry pancakes with bannan cream sauce. Delicious!!
Nothing like I expected..........2003-01-10
I couldn't wait to get ahold of this book after so many rave reviews. I didn't find the recipes all that appetizing (their other book CRAZY PLATES was better in this regard), the recipe titles were confusing, and I found the comics mostly annoying.
Book Description
They may be known as man's best friend, but as the writers in this poignant, funny, and dramatic collection know, there's no gender divide when it comes to canines. Whether walking down the street, gathering at the dog park, hitting the open road, or spending one too many nights together on the couch in front of the TV, a woman and her dog are an enduring pair. And there are many who consider their dogs to be members of their family and themselves to be full-fledged dog moms, even if they're single.
From the family dog who takes on the anxiety of a family as the writer's sister battles breast cancer, to the compelling tale of a woman searching for her furry friend in the aftermath of September 11th, to the blind and deaf dog who teaches everyone about keeping on truckin' no matter what predicaments she gets into, the essays in this anthology get at the heart of love — and yes, sometimes love-hate-relationships women have with the dogs in their lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection, and highly recommend the book to anyone who likes animals. It is especially interesting comparing personalities and the types of canine-critters we choose. Of course, it makes you wonder who chooses who. If you like dogs: James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best and Ghost in the Rainbow
A great Book!!.......2007-06-06
This is such a great book I read It in one day because I could not put it down!!! The stories are funny, sad, sweet and cover just about every emotion. I loved it and would highly recommend it if you love books about dogs !!!
Okay.......2007-06-05
The best part of this book was honestly the cover. The content inside was pretty good but not fabulous. There was one story, I admit, that almost brought me to tears, but other than that, it wasn't what I would call great literature. Others might like it more, maybe it's just me.
Excellent arrangement of short stories.......2007-03-18
Woman's Best Friend was a great collection of short stories about dogs. I loved the realistic nature of the book as not all the stories were about how great, smart or funny each woman's dog was. In fact there are a couple sad stories that remind you that dogs are ultimately animals with instincts and breed characteristics and some times they aren't a woman's best friend. I loved the thumbnail photos of the dogs within the short stories so you could really envision them in their setting. The story "First Born" by Lisa Vollmer was one that resonated with me in particular and would with any woman who considers her dog to be part of her family. Highly recommended for anyone - male or female - who has had a dog make an impact on their life.
gret dog book!.......2007-01-05
I thought the stories of dogs and thier owners was a wonderful idea. Loved the book.
P.S. I was in one of the stories.....a little bias

This is a wonderful book of quilting designs. I especially appreciate the historical information, and also the suggestions for variations on each pattern. This book really brought a new dimension to my quilting. Highly recommended!
A book of unique, challenging quilting designs........1999-01-22
As an avid hand quilter, I am always on the lookout for something different in the way of designs. Dorothy Osler's book really hit the spot. It is a review of traditional British and Welsh motifs from antique quilts, something new and refreshing to the American eye. A plus is that Ms. Osler comments on each one's origin and meaning. She also includes options in the way of size, and slight variations to choose from for the designs. I found myself frustrated by the short length of the book. Maybe she can do a Part II?

Entertaining.......2004-05-08
This is a collection of items from the Bible that include the gross, the weird, and the bizarre, with sections like Gross-cordance, Vomit Verses, Bugs & Insects, Weird Trivia and Bizarre Healings. Some of it, though, is just things like records (longest living--Methusaleh, worst day ever--Job), or sections such as Remarkable Miracles or Laugh Out Loud. Obviously geared toward kids and more likely to appeal to boys, as an adult I still enjoyed the format of the book, with its all-over-the-place organization (as in a magazine) and its language. For example, in the section on Excuses, when it reports on Aaron's fanciful story about the golden calf ("I just melted everybody's jewelry and out came this calf!"), the book responds "'Oh sure! Right, Aaron! Just like that? You sure the tooth fairy didn't make it out of gold fillings?' Moses probably wanted to bust the Ten Commandments over Aaron's head." In the section on Angels is a story entitled, Barbecue, Angel Style (from Judges 6:11-12) and another entitled Note To Self: Don't Talk Back To Angels (from Luke 1:11-20).
These are just a few examples of the types of stories you find in this book. An entertaining presentation of stories from the Bible, while especially appropriate for someone who is into the weird and gross, even someone who is not into that (like me) may find the book enjoyable for its fresh perspective of well-known events from the Bible.

Straight Plato.......2007-05-19
From the first words of the introduction, this is more or less a children's primer on platonism. The spirit world is the "real world." This world is just forms and shadows. It's hard to imagine a less biblical way of talking about angels and demons. A horrible, horrible miss in a series (2:52) full of hits.

Book Description
The Lincoln Image documents how popular prints helped make Lincoln's a household face, deliberately crafting the image of a man of the people, someone with whom an ordinary American could identify. Featuring the work of Currier and Ives, John Sartain, and other artists and printmakers, this lavishly illustrated volume pairs original photographs and paintings with the prints made from them. That juxtaposition shows how printmakers reworked the original images to refine Lincoln's appearance. In several prints, his image replaces those of earlier politicians (the nineteenth-century equivalent of being "airbrushed in"); in others, a beard has been added to images that originally appeared clean-shaven.
Focusing on prints produced in Lincoln's lifetime and in the iconographically important months immediately following his death, The Lincoln Image also includes wartime cartoons, Lincoln family portraits (most of which appeared after the assassination), and renderings of the fateful moment of the shooting at Ford's Theatre. In addition to discussing the prints themselves, prominent Lincoln scholars Harold Holzer, Gabor S. Boritt, and Mark E. Neely Jr. examine the political environment of the nineteenth century that sustained a market for political prints, showing how politics offered spectacle, ritual, and amusement to a nation without organized sports and with only a rudimentary entertainment industry.
A fascinating examination of the relationship between Lincoln's image, the printmakers' craft, and the political culture that helped shape them both, The Lincoln Image documents how printmakers both chronicled and shaped Lincoln's transfiguration into an American icon.
Customer Reviews:
An original and highly recommended work.......2001-07-05
Harold Holzer, Gabor S. Boritt, and Mark E. Neeley Jr. effectively collaborate to present The Lincoln Image: Abraham Lincoln And The Popular Print. Their work, profusely enhanced with period photographs (as well as iconography immediately following his assassination) documenting how popular prints served to make Lincoln's image of the popular and political culture of his day. An original and highly recommended work, The Lincoln Image is a impressive study of painstaking and exhaustive scholarship that will be greatly appreciated by academia, Lincoln studies supplemental curriculum reading lists, and students of 19th Century American political history.

Must read Civil Rights history.......2006-08-17
This was an excellent read for an in-depth look into the civil rights struggle in the south. From a black doctor's perspective, the book gives the reader a different look at many events in Mississipi that led to integration and equality, and what was sacrificed to attain what we have today.
The book also gives the reader an intimate look into Dr. Mason's life from childhood to the civil rights era, but not beyond. This book would have been better if more information on Dr. Mason had been included. Hopefully, James Patterson Smith will update the forward now that Dr. Mason has passed, and tell us more about what this book is missing, and perhaps add a brief history of his life after the 60's and 70's. (much has been left out.) I would like to have seen Dr. Mason expand upon his own secondary theme of maintaining morals and ethics to reveal a true struggle between his personal life, his political life, and the lives impacted by his choices, good and bad; the legacy Dr. Mason left to ALL of his children was only hinted at in the secondary theme,(much as this sentence does).
Though little long-winded in parts, this is an excellent study of Black history in the south.
A physician of all seasons.......2000-11-28
Dr. Gilbert Mason has written a book which not only stands as an important literary stone in the foundation of the civil rights movement, but also as a window into the humanity and "higher calling" of being a physician. As a white physician in Mississipppi, I was riveted when I read this book. The hardship which was endured by African Americans during this era is unimaginable, and it was only a generation ago. With eloquence and thouroughness Dr. Mason leads us through the origins of the civil rights movement specifically as it occurred in Biloxi MS. The racial hatred and violence which opposed his nonviolent protests and the fledgling Biloxi chapter of the NAACP is laid out for the reader with very good clarity. When I read this book, the secondary theme also jumped out at me, which was his constant pusuit of being a physician , specifically maintaing high degree of ethics, morality, and care for all patients black are white during this period of tribulation. I highly recommend this book to all.
