Book Description

Hollywood has sent its emissaries to New Iberia Parish to film a Civil War epic in the steaming mists of the Louisiana bayou -- reawakening the ghosts of a past best left undisturbed.

The restless specters wait in the shadows for cajun cop Dave Robicheaux -- as he hunts a serial butcher who is preying on the less-then-innocent young. For these spirits are the guardians of Robicheaux's darkest torments -- and they hold the key to his ultimate salvation...or a final, fatal downfall.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, modern, violent Louisiana Gothic.....Ex-cellent...........2007-05-25

If you know already know the writings of J.L.B., then I need say no more.
If you don't, but have a decent vocabulary and think you might enjoy some action packed stories with a sense of melancholy, a violent (yet literary and well meaning) narrator, and tales of vicious crimes, punishment(and usually, revenge of some sort), set amidst the the jails and mean steets of New Orleans, and the bayous, rivers and small towns of South Lousiana, buy "The Neon Rain", and start at the beginning. The narrators best friend (in most of the books) is one of the most unforgettable and enjoyable "alter-egos" in history.
Tragedy, love, friendship, murder, mayhem, as well as unforgettable dialogue and characters, make James Lee Burke one of my favorite fiction authors of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Ghosts from the past.......2007-05-18

This is number 7 in the Detective Dave Robicheaux series, set in New Iberia, in Louisiana. A movie crew has moved into town to shoot a Civil War epic, creating quite a thrill for the locals, some of whom have bit parts in the movie. The star of the movie is a well known, handsome actor who has a drinking problem and who becomes an AA buddy of Dave. A former resident and school mate of Dave, Baby Feet Balboni, comes in From New Orleans to consolidate his partnership with the movie's director, bringing his gang with him, much to the disgust of the local police, and when the badly mutilated bodies of two prostitutes are found, people immediately connect Balboni with the crimes. Driving home one night, Dave's car is surrounded by an electrical storm in which he sees a Civil War General and his troops who fought and were killed during that period but with whom he seems to be able to have an easy conversation. This book is being made into a movie at this time, starring Tommy Lee Jones so I look forward to seeing it in the near future, as I have stayed in this very area and recognize some of it from the descriptions. James Lee Burke is one of my favourite writers, easy to read and always with an interesting story to tell.

5 out of 5 stars Feels Like Home!.......2007-05-16

Of the 35 or so reviews for this book, not one reviewer is from or even familiar with much of Louisiana, much less the New Iberia area. I am. In fact I was "born on the bayou" in Dautrieve Hospital which sat on the banks of Bayou Tech. My grandmother worked in the courthouse for years cooking for workers and inmates alike. My roots go deep and spread out from Avery Island to Arnaudville. So, when I say that Mr Burke's setting and characters are familiar to me, they are. In fact, just reading short excepts enables me to smell the air before a thunderstorm.... the aroma of crawfish boil. I can hear the melodic mix of English and Cajun French that we all speak. I know the streets, the hang-outs, where to fish and where to eat. I can recognize the "bait shop" and the lake and bayou, the courthouse, famous and infamous.

Having said all that... MR BURKE GETS IT. And has the genious to tranlate everything into the most evocative words. Its pure magic. Robicheaux's haunting, troubled past is completely believable. The characterizations of people hit the mark (sometimes I think I recognize friends and family in those characters).

I have read EVERY Dave Robicheaux book and always anxiously wait for the next. I am OVER THE MOON over the filming of this book (starring Tommy Lee Jones).

Anyone who wants to write about a character and setting that is so ingrained into its resident's soul should read James Burke. HE IS THE MASTER!!

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not James Lee Burke's best.......2007-04-17

Anytime you read a James Lee Burke novel you are taken into the bayous of Louisiana with a writing style that makes you almost see and smell the settings that his main character, Dave Robichaux, lives in each day. This book has Robichaux dealing with an old high school classmate (Baby Feet Balboni) who is back in New Iberia since he is funding a movie.

Dave Robichaux deals with his own demons in this early novel and is always the renegade cop with a lot of angst and an interesting way of not following the law that he's supposed to uphold. I enjoy Burke's books, and this was no exception, but there were times in this book that I felt the plot didn't really follow any particular direction. The serial killer sort of creeps out into the novel and the killing of a man 30 years ago has Robichaux able to link together crimes that don't really link together. The other problem was the Confederate General (Hood) that talks to Robichaux at times in the book. It was too bizarre and I know it is FICTION, but I could not get myself to buy into it very much.

Burke's books are a good read. His ability to write in a way that makes you wish you were in South Louisiana is uncanny, but this is not his best work. It's not a bad read, it's just not his best by any means.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional, just like all his books.......2007-03-28

I just read this one of James Lee Burke's books although it is an old book. What can I say? I love the settings of his books although I have never been to New Iberia Parish or even Louisiana. No one can describe a sunset or bayou like James.

How can you not like Dave Robicheau? He isn't one of the fancy detectives. He struggles with his problems like the rest of us.

The confederate part was a bit odd but it did not play a large part in the book. I rate most of his books "excellent" and this is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Another Dave Robicheaux Entry.......2007-04-10

Burke can do no wrong with this series. You can read my general review if you read my review of Crusader's Cross. Each book is a great stand-alone, but I've decided it is best to read the series in sequential order and to listen to the audiobooks whenever you can. Both will add a great deal of depth to your enjoyment of this outstanding series.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, MY FIRST BURKE NOVEL.......2006-08-29

A bookseller told me I needed to acquaint myself with Mr. Burke and I'm glad she did. The title makes this compelling, fast-moving crime novel sound more surreal than it is. I mean, sure you have Dave talking to dead Confederate generals, but it's done in such a way as to be perfectly believable and actually pretty poetic and lovely. The mystery is clean and well-done and the writing is about a dozen cuts above the usual crime novel. The author's love of the Gulf is evident in his descriptions and his knowledge of the human heart very clear.

I've ordered the others, am happy as a dog to have found Mr. Robicheaux.

A new method for speed learning. Have your father executed and tortured, at length, in public, before your eyes. That way, in the matter of a few days you can become a powerful witch, with some studying and the help of his collection of arcane texts. Oh, and bump off an old neighborhood witch, and nick some stuff of hers. This is what Endithor's daughter did.

Anyway, the main villain of the piece is an ancient vampire, who is been manipulating a particularly venal local lord. Who happened to then suggest the whole sorcery lark to Endithor, and then busted and executed him for it. Needless to say, in the middle of Endithor's daughter, Sonja, and a vampire, his longevity was negatively assured.

Sonja bails up the vampire at the end in a stone room, with the help of some guards with iron spears, and basically has him pinned against a wall the whole night, until the sun comes up and does what it usually does to 'dem bloodsuckers.

In the fourth volume in the adventures of Red Sonja, our heroine must deal with a gang of street urchins, an insane sorceress (Endithor's daughter), political inintrigue, and a vampire. Needless to say, the action is fast and furious. In the end the wicked are punished, and the virtuous live happily ever after. Actually, only the virtuous who are still alive at the end get to live happily ever after, but why quibble? All in all an exciting addition to the Red Sonja canon. As with all books in the series, the cover art is provided by Boris, and in my humble opinion, this is his best cover for the series

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-09-02

Dr. Bernstein's book is a very good resource.

He states he has been diabetic since age 12 and became a doctor to advocate for other diabetics. The book is very good guide for anyone facing this illness.

4 out of 5 stars Newly Diagnosed Diabetic Looking For Information.......2007-08-23

This book takes all the 'pleasure' out of being a diabetic. It gives a good primer on the basics of diabetes. Then it departs from much of the convention of diabetes treatment in terms of diet. Basically, Dr. Bernstein advocates a diet devoid of almost all carbohydrates (he "hasn't had a piece of fruit in 40 years"). His advice is based on techniques he has refined over 40+ years and they have obviously worked very well for him, a Type 1 diabetic who went much of his early life improperly treated. That he is still alive today is a testament to his regimen's efficacy. However, it is a truly Draconian approach that essentially strips most food-based pleasure from your life. Also, he advocates regular, strenuous exercise to build muscles (building muscles reduces insulin resistance). He is less interested in aerobic exercise, although he acknowledges its cardiovascular benefits if practiced strenuously (not a jog, but a demanding pace that begins (on a treadmill) at a slope that exhausts you in 20 seconds, then lowering the slope and continuing, etc). As in the anerobic exercise, he warns against rest periods. The idea is only through pain do you build muscles including those of the heart. I found the book very informative, but his techniques very scary. As an almost 70-year old man, I'm not sure I'm equal to his demanding regimen. I bet it works; but I don't know how much pleasure you'll get from living all those extra years if you're constantly craving starches and rest.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Bernstein is GREAT!!!.......2007-08-23

Dr. Bernstein is a type 1 diabetic and had just about every sympton possible. He figured out the "diabetes code" and clearly explains how to control your diabetes. His cure is exactly opposite to that of the medical establishment. He was educated as an engineer, then became a medical doctor late in life. His book is designed to educate and not to impress how smart he is. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars My Little Girl Needs her Daddy.......2007-07-29

Unlike the ADA advice my doctor and the diabetes educators gave me, this book works.

I have normal blood sugars, my cholesterol and triglycerides are normal again, and I am no longer spilling protein in my urine.
I have lost 70 pounds and kept it off.
My A1C results at 4.8% are very much in the non-diabetic range.

Better than all that, I can feel my feet again.
I had diabetic neuropathy that made my feet numb and I did not even realize it before.

With my blood sugars staying between 80 and 100, the feeling has been returning to my feet and the numbness is fading.

Dr. B, my little girl will thank you when she is old enough to understand that you saved her daddy's life!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Wait To Read This Book!.......2007-08-04

I gave it 5 stars even though I haven't yet, because this info as these crossbreeds become popular is very much needed thanks to the AKC and money-hungry breeders destroying our purebreds!

The AKC by allowing any breeder to register any litter from 2 purebreds of the same breed, regardless of congentital and/or tempermental defects, plus allowing breeders to modernize the breed standards according to what they think is stylish!

I doubt if there is a single purebreed that doesn't have congentital problems and few that are used or even can perform the jobs(working/ sporting breeds) that they were originally bred for! Take todays American Cocker Spaniel,no way would it be possible to take this dog into the field, with that absurdly heavy coat it now has, unless it was clipped! Look at any of the old photos in the breed books and see what breeders and the AKC have done to these dogs!

The AKC does not even require breeders to have their breeding stock tested for known congentital defects for those breeds, and graded, let alone refuse to allow litters of defective parents be registered!

So uninformed buyers go out and pay high prices for purebred registered pups from kennels or pet stores, not knowing the vet bills and possible heartache they most likely will face in the near future. That's why breeders of border collies did NOT WANT AKC recognition of the border collie, for fear of the damage it would do to the breed!

Yes,no doubt there are puppy mills breeding these crossbreeds for money alone, but the purebred breeders were the ones who first became known as "backyard breeders".

So anyone who is considering getting a dog. A crossbreed is a good choice, but educating yourself first is the most important step, and then maybe you will even decide to get one from a recue or shelter. But do yourself, your family, and any potential pet, a favor and get the info first,to save yourself a chunk of future money, and possibly heartbreak,if you make the mistake of getting a dog bred from defective, untested parents.

One complaint I have about info on these crossbreeds,is the claim by some breeders/books, that they have *hybid-vigor*. Crossbreeds are NOT hybrids,as a dog/coyote or dog/wolf cross are. So do not be fooled by false claim!

Remember that these pups will only be as healthy and congenital-defect-FREE as the purebred parents are! So just as in buying a purebred pup,you should never even consider getting a pup from untested/ungraded parents! Do your research, and find out what problems each breed has,and then RUN,don't walk away from any breeder who has not had the parents tested and graded. And NEVER,NEVER,NEVER buy any pup from any of those pet shops you find in the malls, who are supplied by the puppy mills!

1 out of 5 stars This Book is Appalling.......2007-07-11

I'm in shock that a reputable publisher would support the unethical practice of breeding mutts to scam the public. This book claims to help buyers find a "responsible breeder of designer dogs", but that is a contradiction in terms. NO responsible breeder would purposely cross breeds.
It's unethical because the only responsible reason to breed a dog while 2million unwanted dogs (mostly mutts) are euthanized each year is because the breeder is dedicated to preserving and improving a particular breed according to it's standard. Responsible breeders do not breed to supply the pet market. Those individuals who are producing mutts and dubbing them with "Designer dog" names are motivated solely by greed and are not only perpetrating an unscrupulous scam on the public, but doing harm to the very dogs they breed. They do NO health screenings or genetic testing at all. They do not even breed to a standard, (because there is none). They get their "breeding stock" from pet stores and puppymillers because no responsible breeder of quality dogs would ever sell their dogs to be used for such nefarious purposes, so the mutts they are breeding are propagating defects, health issues and temperament problems.
In the case, for example, of the "Puggle", they are risking the very lives of the dogs they produce by virtue of the breeds they are crossing (pug + beagle). A brachycephalic dog, (such as a pug) with the lung power and prey drive of a beagle would be in serious danger or dropping dead while playing on a hot day. Those "breeders" are very adamant in perpetuating the lie that "mutts are healthier", yet these puggles are already exhibiting epilepsy (a disease that has virtually been eradicated in the lines of responsible beagle breeders), before the age of one and a defect where the bones break very easily and do not properly heal. They don't guarantee to take back their dogs, (as responsible breeders do), so these sick animals are now growing in numbers in shelters.
It's OK to love a mixed breed dog, but it's unethical to purposely PRODUCE mixed breed dogs in the name of the almighty BUCK. Dogs are not products.

5 out of 5 stars This book is sooooooo good.......2007-04-06

I love this book. It is soooo useful. It talks about all the basics. And how to look for a Breeder and what you need to look for. It also has some info on different hybrids. If you wanna get one then get this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars A good start.......2007-03-16

I found this book informative and easy to use. The section on finding a breeder is especially well-thought out. There is a section on finding a hybrid dog in rescues or in shelters as well. This book is comprehensive and can help point you towards a "designer dog" that will fit your family and lifestyle.

4 out of 5 stars review: Complete Idiot's Guide to Designer Dogs.......2007-01-09

I read the whole book which is a good sign!! I found it interesting and helpful. It went over steps to decide if a person really wants a dog, and what a "designer" dog is. It also went over training, feeding, health, and grooming a dog. It provided information on the benefits of crossing a certain small breed with a miniture poodle, and what the breeding is trying to improve. I would have however, liked to have seen more information dedicated to the Shihpoo and the Poochon, which are the two breeds I am most interested in.

Martin Puryear's sculpture has received increasing acclaim in the years since 1989, when he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant and the grand prize at the São Paulo Bienal, where he was the sole United States representative. Prepared to accompany a 1991 exhibition of his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, this cleanly designed and generously formatted catalog reflects the powerful simplicity of Puryear's work. Between two informative essays by Robert Starr and Neal Benezra, then curator of 20th-century painting and sculpture at the Art Institute, is a generous plate section reproducing more than 30 of Puryear's major works from 1974 to 1990. His sculpture is both meticulously crafted and completely unbound, evoking the most elemental forms of nature and landscape.

                                        Book Description

"Amidst the continually shifting postmodernist landscape, Martin Puryear has maintained a constant and singular vision: unafraid of beauty, the well-made object, and the viability of meaning in art and in our world, he is without question one of America's preeminent sculptors."--from the Introduction Puryear has always stood apart, outside the prevailing trends in the contemporary art world. Since the mid-1970s he has created an outstanding body of sculpture that builds on the tradition of organic abstraction. Carrying this tradition forward, Puryear incorporates a minimalist simplicity of form and an emphasis on process and materials that aligns him with post-minimalist sculptors. His approach to making sculpture is based in traditional craft techniques. Rather than carving or casting, his primary interest is in building, constructing, and assembling--using accumulative processes such as wrapping, tying, and weaving, or lamination and joinery. This catalogue focuses on a selection of works from the 1990s through the end of 2000, most of them marked by increasing assertiveness, scale, and volume. To encounter Martin Puryear's sculptures is to experience a world of powerful yet richly ambiguous objects.

Thrust into the public eye when she was 18 as the spouse of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, Myrlie Evers-Williams has developed a public persona that protects her extremely private life. In this courageous autobiography, she traces her evolution from "the daughter/niece/wife of..." to her own separate identity as a civil rights pioneer, successful businesswoman, and community leader. She explains in the introduction that she "was not always the hopeful, always strong single mother. I was not always nice and forgiving, compliant and ladylike. This is the Myrlie who speaks for herself as herself."

Evers-Williams speaks to all the rumors and assumptions that have been placed upon her as she reflects and discusses the events of her public and private lives. She explores her childhood in Mississippi, her college experiences, her marriage to Medgar Evers, the aftermath of his tragic assassination, her rise in corporate America, and her tenure as the chairperson for the NAACP. In this "instructional autobiography," she crafts wisdom from her own struggles with issues of identity and privacy, offering advice on coping with common struggles like financial independence, single motherhood, and workplace politics. Most importantly, though, Watch Me Fly documents the role of women in the civil rights movement in an unapologetic, honest account that adds a personal perspective to the events described in history books. --Amy Wan

                                                    Book Description

As the first full-time chairman of the NAACP and popular speaker, as a committed activist and the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, as a powerful businesswoman breaking racial and gender barriers in corporate boardrooms and municipal government, Myrlie Evers-Williams is one of the most respected African-Americans in this country. Her dignity and perseverance in bringing her husband's killer to justice - a battle she waged for more than thirty years - have made her an inspiration and role model for millions of women of all ages and races.

Yet few people know the private side of this most remarkable of public lives, a side that Myrlie Evers-Williams shares for the first time in WATCH ME FLY. Here is a moving and vivid portrait of a childhood within a family of proud, determined Mississippi women; of the harrowing dangers her family faced during the civil rights struggle; of her family faced during the civil rights struggle; of her efforts as a single mother to raise three children while attending college, efforts that left her battling depression; of her opening her heart to another wonderful man, only to lose him to cancer; and of her path from business and civic careers to her brilliant leadership of the NAACP through scandal to newfound vitality.

WATCH ME FLY is not just a traditional memoir, however, but what Myrlie Evers-Williams calls an "instructive autobiography," a book that links her memories to the wisdom she has gained over the years. With the warmth and practicality of a best friend and the savvy guidance of an extraordinary leader, she writes about financial survival, single parenting, the secrets of a successful relationship, building career, corporate gamesmanship, and aging.

Through fascinating, sometimes tragic, sometimes joyous times of Myrlie Evers-Williams's life, we share in this great woman's journey through history and to her discovery of the woman she was meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Watching Ms. Evers-Williams fly gave me courage to try.......2001-03-28

A friend who knows that I will be traveling to Mississippi in the summer presented this book to me. She gave it to me to help me understand what I was getting into, but the book provided me with courage and knowledge that pertains to life outside of Mississippi. This is a book that everyone should read, young and old. I can't tell you how much it has touched me personally or how it stirred something that was hidden deep inside of me. Through Ms. Evers-Williams' wisdom, personal reflections, anecdotes, and trials she weaves a story of despair and triumph. This book has something in it for everyone, and regardless of color, age, gender, ethnicity, or political party (everything that could possibly divide you and I) this book will change thinking and express feelings that cannot be articulated. I learned about relationships and coping under intense pressure. She clarified so many things for me that I began highlighting the book, studying it as if she was going to test me on the material. But she won't test me, life will! Watch Me Fly is nothing less then a gift to the world, and it would be a great misfortune if this resource were not taken advantage of. I strongly encourage you to read it, immediately!!!

But not only did Watch Me Fly basically change my perspective on life and past situations, it also prepared me for the future. As Ms. Evers-Williams goes through life, sometimes winning and sometimes facing stumbling blocks, all of her lessons learned readied me for upcoming situations in my own life. Her triumphs are glorious; I found myself cheering out loud for her. Her successes and failures inspired me to take my first steps into the real world without fear, and I have a new confidence that cannot be broken. Her faith and perseverance nurtured my strengths, which resulted in a better outlook on life and Mississippi this summer. If Ms. Evers-Williams ever reads this, I want to tell her how much I appreciate her effort, it has really, really meant a lot to me.

I thought I knew who Myrlie Evers-Williams was. She is much more than "the widow of." She worked her way to the top of the private sector, government and one of the country's oldest and most well known organizations, the NAACP. She did all of this while raising 3 children alone after the death of her husband.

This book is a guide and an inspiration to all women. It is ironic that while I was reading this book her husband's murderer, Byron DeLaBeckwith, died. I did not know how long she worked to bring his killer to justice and how much more grief she had to bear in doing so.

Myrlie Evers-Williams is an amazing woman. Anyone interested in the history of the civil right's movement, women's issues, or modern American history will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Myrlie Evers-Williams is "An Every Woman".......1999-11-08

I found in Myrlie Evers-Williams, every woman. The various stages which were necessary for her to experience inorder for her to evolve to where she is at this stage proved to be challenging, growth producing, relentless, endless and represent the light at the end of the tunnel. I found myself visualizing and feeling the pain, the depth of darkness and the state of bewilderment. She has become a woman to be honored and deservant of noteworthy praise. To have to watch the struggles of the two men in her life, their relationship within this context and their unltimate deaths, phew! that within itself leaves you in limbo. Then to make the moves to new regions with her children in search for a better life and more opportunity and a chance to find herself takes a great deal of courage. I applaud her and take pleasure in having read the story behind the stories. An astounding woman!

4 out of 5 stars Motivational-Required reading for all, Women in particular........1999-03-08

This book is a heart-wrenching autobiography of a timid, young southern girl raised and influenced by two strong African American women, her grandmother and aunt, who prepared Myrlie to face a lifetime of struggle and survival. Myrlie Evers-Williams is a formidable personality and role-model.

I especially enjoyed the book's focus on Myrlie's personal life as opposed to the Civil Rights Movement, and the way I could relate to many of the childhood traditions she was raised by. Her suffering brought tears to my eyes as I read, as well as, a feeling of validation and peace in the direction of my life. At one juncture, Myrlie referred to her tendency to repress an observation until it was grammatically structured in her mind to perfection, thus running the risk of another more confident individual expressing her very idea. I must say I laughted at this self-editing process as it has been a personal fault of mine all my life-waiting for perfection before speaking and thereby missing the opportunity.

This book has also fueled my fire in questioning and remembering who I am and from whence I came. How far can I go back in my family tree, what are the family names, what are and were their personalities and how much of them do I bring to my life?

WATCH ME FLY should be read by all single mothers so they can see how a strong woman like Myrlie Evers-Williams once struggled and wrestled with the same types of obstacles they face everyday. Yet, Myrlie Evers-Williams not only survived but became successful in her own right.

5 out of 5 stars Written just for me!.......1999-02-10

Thanks to Myrlie for her selfless sharing of her experiences. She inspired me to take risks heretofore postponed. It is truly inspirational and moving.
