Like other reviewers, I found this offering was just so-so. It may be that I'm weary of Goldy always finding dead bodies, always having mini-breakdowns, and Goldy's loved ones always being under suspicion. It seems churlish of me to complain about very well-described human emotions to traumatic death, but after four or five stories it's just gotten a bit tedious for me. Let Goldy solve a murder that's not directly related to her little family for a change.
No Appetite to Read More.......2006-06-29
This review is for the audio version. This is the first book I have read of this series. However, this book is the fifth in a series and the main character went on and on about her ex husband. This is after she has already remarried so I can only imagine how the first four books must have dwelled on it. I thought the premise of this book was interesting: catering a low fat luncheon for a cosmetic company. However, the book was downbeat mixed with corny and I didn't care about any of the characters. I also didn't like that the author would negatively stereotype people if they were physically unattractive. The lead had a harsh personality and I would not want her to cater any event for me.

Diane Mott Davidson is an old standby for me. Whenever I'm in a bookstore, I can look for her titles on the shelf and all is right with the universe. This is a series of mysteries with the same character, Goldy the caterer. Though she isn't a detective, her job involves her in a lot of situations other 9-to-5ers might not run into, and that's the hook of the book as it were.
Killer Pancake is light fluffy fun (the allusion to pancakes here is intended). And there are recipes, so who can fault that? I recommend any of her books. The subplot of her relationship with "the jerk" may get a little old for you if you read enough of her stuff, but let it ride. Every great lady has to have a few flaws. Killer Pancake is just one more in a fun little series. Bon appetit.
Mouthwatering Recipes.......2005-10-29
The so-called "low-fat" recipes in the book appear delightful especially the Hoisin Turkey with Roasted Pine Nuts in Lettuce Cups, and Turkey Curry with Raisin Rice. Hopefully they result in delectable dishes when I finally make time to prepare them. An index of the recipes is included at the end of the book which is great. As for the mystery itself, it is an account of a caterer trying her best to stay sane doing overrated daily chores while assisting the police (whether they welcome it or not) to solve a murder case that involves the well-being of her assistant while balancing a so-called fear of an ex-husband. If there are civilians who are as perceptive as Goldy, the caterer, then maybe a lot of real life murders could be solved more quickly. At least, that's what the writing seems to concentrate on - a woman's intuition. Too much of it makes the story unbelievable even as a fiction. There are a few actions including a shooting spree but the way the tale is told, the tumults cannot be grasped - everything is on the surface, more in the form of a news article than a stirring recounting. It is a rapid read of a short mystery that comprises mentions of lots of good food, drinks, and preparations with a mediocre technique of story telling.

You can get hungry while listening to these. I was glad I was listening while driving the car and couldn't hit the frige. Of course I had to look up some of the receipes to try them out.

A handy primer to keep in reach when times get rough.......2007-02-14
As a male, I was unsure about purchasing this book because it seems Ms. Ford has gained her following by catering to the Lifetime television demographic rather than us ESPN viewers. So when this book turned up as a bargain clearance and the reviews seemed to hint the book was geared to both genders, I went ahead and made the purchase. Overall, I found this book to be a breeze to get through and felt it was right up there in terms of substance and just plain fun when compared to other self-help books I have read.
The book is broken into three main sections as stated in the title. I like the way the author closes each section with suggesting you put in writing how you will implement the ideas she lays out. Of course, putting things in writing is not new. I just think she has broken things down into smaller assignments as compared to the somewhat overwhelming "write down everything you want in life" other self help books tell you to do.
Although Ms. Ford's message is nothing new and it has been proven that reading these self-help books may make you change your behavior patterns for a period of just a few days rather than years, I believe this is one of those books that is good to have around as a reference when you find yourself slipping back to old habits.

I love books like this. It's not a lofty, ellusive, preachy book about why we should be happy. The author actually gives practical solutions that we all can apply right away in order to be happier. That is exactly what I did when writing my own book. I love it when (self help) authors come across more like a peer than an "expert". Good job Debbie Ford!

Looking to change your ways? Looking for a succinct, encouraging, step by step guide? This book is for you. I could recognize myself in many of the examples. The author divides her book into three sections, dream it, plan it, and live it. I particularly liked the "No-Cookie Zones" chapter; how to recognize when we engage in debilitating behaviors; that when we do, there is no reward. She discusses how goals have to be specific, something different from dreams and ambitions. Ms. Ford emphasizes the need for structure and discipline in planning life changing goals. She also encourages her readers to seize moments in their days, and to live to inspire.

Elephant story.......2007-01-22
I loved this book. My 7 year old loves elephants and although this is a bit over her reading level, I got it for her and ended up reading for myself. It is a wonderful story about a female elephant and her rescue from Africa, then her tales of growing up on a ranch out west in the U.S. It is a fascinating story about African elephant life, the rancher who adopted her, Texaco, Malboro, African politics, and circus life all rolled into the unusual story of an elephant named Amy. I had no idea elphants were socially such advanced creatures. Plus, I got so much information in such a quick and easy read. Thanks to Malcolm Macpherson for his well researched story.

The true story of Bob and his good natured Amy. It is a wonderful read for anyone who loves animals but Amy's story did not really end the way the book implies. Instead, Amy resides at Riddle's Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary in Arkansas. I don't believe the author intentionally misleads the reader but I think the plans just fell through in the end and everyone decided it was best. I saw first-hand the excellent care and freedom she is given at Riddle's and approve whole-heartedly of the true ending.
An unexpected great read with joy, sadness, and humor.......2005-09-18
This is an exceptional novel. I loved every moment of this beautiful story of the love and friendship between a man and his elephant. I cried and laughed and sat in awe of the beauty and wonder of this book. While the begining starts raw, powerful and mournful, don't be discouraged. This only last for a few pages. Then the story just continues to get better and better. I was extremely surpised by the quality of this novel. Overall, I just loved this book! I plan on reading it again and again. I recommend it to all people, not just animal lovers. It will surpise you as much as it did me, I'm sure.
Beautiful Story.......2005-09-10
This is a wonderful story of the connection between a man and his pet, this pet just happens to be an elephant. You will find out that the Marboro Man was not just a good-looking cowboy, but a man of exceptional depth and compassion. This is not great literature, but it is a great story and well told. The emotional lives of this unlikely pair will inspire a closer connection between man and beast.

Historic Details of Navaho Textiles.......2005-09-17
A must for any Navajo textile collector for its rich detail and painstaking description of techniques plus a valuable history of Navaho weaving. First published in 1934,this book would be a rare find if it were a First Edition or even hard cover of the second printing.
Navaho Weaving - Its Technic and Its History (sic)features 261 pp. of text, 123 pp. of illustrations including photos and renderings of over 100 blankets with a large fold-out color illustration of an old Chief White Antelope Blanket that is eight times larger than the book and colored magnificently. Printed from 14 handcut rubber blocks, this blanket's design is breathtaking.
The author, Charles Avery Amsden served as curator of The Southwest Museum and secretary and treasurer until he died in 1941. This book represents years of in-depth research written in amazing detail.
If you can find an affordable (around $50 as of 2005) second printing (circa 1969) perhaps even a library binding edition, you will still receive the book's First Edition effect of a stunning and rich reference tome. The paperback is a lesser version, as it has many of the illustrations shrunk, plus lacks the huge Saxony yard serape illustration.
For Collectors of Antique Navajo Weavings.......2001-08-03
Originally published in 1934, Amsden is considered the basic foundational text by authors writing on the history of Navajo blankets and rugs. While much new and helpful information has been written on Navajo weaving since then, most of these books used Amsden as original source material for much of their information. Pre-1940 Navajo blankets and rugs are among the most collectible artifacts in both the investment and art worlds today. Most all serious Indian art collectors, Native American Indian museum curators and related authors and academics will have a copy of this seminal work in their libraries.
Other recommendations: (1)Photos of antique blankets : "Navajo Textiles" The William Randolph Hearst Collection" by Nancy Blomberg; and (2)"Navajo Weaving Tradition" by Kaufman and Selser is one of the few "in print" books with and overview of the history of Navajo weaving. There is always a need for many more books in this area as so many titles are short run or specialty press issues. (Periodicals: (3) American Indian Art magazine with offices in Scottsdale, AZ publishes a quarterly and often features articles on early weavings.)
(Regarding other critiques of this book ; this is much more a book for collectors and investors and those interested in identifying and understanding the history and development of Navajo weavings and is not a "how to" book for those wishing to "learn to weave". Hobbyist shops have plenty of the latter available.)
A book for scholars and truly dedicated weaving enthusiasts.......2000-12-28
This is a very technical book on the subject of Navajo weaving, weaving techniques, and Southwest Indian History. It is written in a very formal, and in my opinion, dated style. The language is somewhat obtuse; many more words are used to share information than are required. All photos are black and white, probably because most came from very old, unrestored photos; as such,they are also of poor quality. Most picture captions are described as "plates", a very dated publishing practice. All of the above observations are why I say that it is perhaps most appropriate to a masters or doctoral student on indian or textile history and technique.
Since this book was on a recommended reading list on the web I am certain there is valuable information in this book for highly dedicated weaving enthusiasts. For instance, the book may go into detail about plants used for dying wool, even giving illustrations of those plants.
For the casual or intermediate weaver, however, I would recommend saving your money. This is the first book I ever sent back to Amazon. I couldn't even think of anyone to give it to. Not even a school teacher I know who loves SW Indian history. That is how dull I found it.

Book Description
In 1926, along with Jean Badovici, Eileen Gray decided to build a house at Roquebrune in the French Riviera-named E-1027-for which she designed many of her most famous pieces of furniture. In 1937, at the request of Le Corbusier, she exhibited a model for a vacation center at the World's Fair. In 1972 she was the subject of a major retrospective in London, and four years later she died in Paris.

I daresay, this book is a smashing good read. Actually, I only checked it out it for the pictures. They were goody.
