About Amazon.......2005-08-29
I have not recieved this book and have ordered it twice. My review is that Amazon should not sell things they do not have and cannot get. I have been trying to read the series in order of printing.
Last Act, but not for Falco, I Hope.......2004-11-14
Quite a number of authors have jumped on the sleuth in Ancient Rome bandwagon, but Lindsey Davis is probably the best of the lot. Her leading character Marcus Didius Falco has been sent out of Rome on a dangerous mission to spy out the Lands of the East. An Imperial order sends him and his girlfriend Helena Justina, the daughter of a Senator to the rose red city of Petra. There they discover a murdered playwright.
Falco feels obliged to investigate the murder and soon becomes embroiled in more murder and mayhem, making him wish he had not left his beloved Rome. All the author's books have been entertaining and of a very high standard, this one is no different.
A low point in an otherwise enjoyable series.......2004-02-14
I have been happily ploughing through the Falco series over the past few months. This entry was most disappointing. It has Falco traipsing all over the far eastern reaches of the empire through town after town. Nothing much happens as Falco searches for a murderer in his midst and inevitably finds him. I found the travel to be repitious and I was bored by several pointless side plots.
Also, is it just me or is this book particularly crass with language and blantant profanity? I'm not adverse to "realism" in my reading, but the tone of the books seem to have changed for the worse with this entry.
I have the next in the series, Time to Depart, and am hoping for a return to form.
Wonderful Rollicking Fun!.......2003-01-06
I don't care what everyone else had to say about this book. I really enjoyed it. It was rollicking good fun. Didio and his beautiful Helena are on the road again, this time in Syria, and they join up with a travelling group of performers. The antics and adventures that they get into during the book are hilarious. The actual catching of the killer is done in the most unique way (as part of a performance). Falco gets better with each outing. Ms. Davis' writing is sparkling with wit, and her characters breathe! This book is back to a real whodunit format, and that was fun as well. Bring on the rest!
If You Enjoy Theatre, You'll Love This Book.......2000-11-30
This was one of the more enjoyable Falco mysteries. I'm a great fan of Shakespeare, and Lindsey Davis's many references to the bard are hilarious. The way she portrays theatre life and it's stereotypical components are very amusing, and the ending left me rolling on the floor with laughter.

Last Act in Palmyra finds Private Eye Marcus Didius Falco hot on the heels of pleasure and a killer as he journeys through the dangerously uncivilized eastern edges of the Empire. Pressing financial needs force Falco to take on a tasteless assignment: gather political information among the pagans outside Rome. But after foreign authorities falsely blame the befuddled sleuth for the death of a mysterious stranger, Falco and his gorgeous companion flee town with an itinerant theater troupe. The only trouble isthe murderer is traveling with them. Book Description
From the author of
Bloodwinter comes the continuation of that epic tale, as two rival kingdoms clash while heroes, heroines, and rogues on both sides -- and no side -- vie for control of a world-altering magic more powerful than anyone's wildest imaginings.
As the realm of Eron sits frozen in the grip of winter, two men struggle through the snow-clogged Wild toward the citadel of their king: the arrogant goldsmith Eddyn, haunted by his past crimes, and his bitter rival, Avall, anxious to increase the power of his clan. Each man brings news of a magical gem discovered in the northern mines.
Meanwhile, Avall's twin sister, Merryn, and her lover, exiled prince Kraxxi, have been captured by Kraxxi's outraged father. As Ixti's king readies his first assault in a devastating war against an unsuspecting Eron, he will force Merryn and Kraxxi to terrible betrayals that will bring Eron's fall ever nearer.
As the armies of Ixti crash across the border, Avall and Eddyn must seek their destinies. For each knows the power of the magical gem and can use it for unbelievable good -- or unimaginable evil.
Customer Reviews:
Good ideas, terrible storytelling.......2006-12-15
This review covers both BLOODWINTER and SPRINGWAR.
Tom Deitz has a pretty good idea for a story in these two books, the first half of a four volume fantasy cycle. The tale has a broad sweep and conceptually, I like how the harsh winters have created a strongly regimented society in Eron, one that unfortunately has been decimated by a plague. The discovery of a magical gem with mysterious powers sets Eron on a collision course with the rival kingdom of Ixti to the south. The crown prince of Ixti and his father the king have a falling out over accidental fratricide. A secret order of priests emerges with its own agenda for the gems.
There's good raw material here. It's a shame, really, that Deitz is a long-winded storyteller with no instinct for conflict or motivation.
In the first 100 pages of SPRINGWAR, for example, there are maybe 3 important story points. The rest of the pages dwell on repetitive scenes that rehash the same personal dilemmas from Bloodwinter. How many times do I need to be told the 5 things that Avall cares about, "in that order." And can we please stop using the phrase "for the nonce"?
The fact that characters continually make very big decisions based on flimsy rationale is a problem. What would drive someone to undertake a weeks-long trek in arctic weather that would freeze dry you like Han Solo if you stood naked in it for 10 minutes? Apparently Deitz thinks you'd do it if you calmly reason out that it's the course of action that makes the most sense, because a variety of bad things MIGHT happen if you don't. He's wrong. You undertake such a trek if you're boxed into a corner, desperate, and have exhausted all possible other options.
Of course, that would require more complicated narrative. Much easier to just have the characters do what you, the writer, decree they should do because that's the way you want the story to go. The gems themselves are introduced in a particularly lazy fashion. Avall, the protagonist, just happens on one in a mine. Despite its amazing uniqueness, when Deitz needs more gems in the hands of his heroes, they too just conveniently appear.
Another problem: everyone just looooves Avall. If they don't love him, then they must be the baddies of the story. Thus, instead of encountering challenges in his personal relationships, Avall finds himself easily believed and accepted among people of power. Interchangeably fresh-faced young people yearn to be near Avall so they can help him. Where are the differing personal agendas? And why, toward the end of Springwar, does Deitz just conveniently set aside the secret order of priests, when he could have used them to raise the stakes even higher?
Let's talk about the fluid sexuality and the free love. In Eron, husbands and wives routinely sleep with other men, or women, or both at the same time. Jealousy never seems to become a factor. There are, of course, people who are able to live that way. But it's simply not believable that jealousy, insecurity, and possessiveness don't cause any tension in this story. Instead of taking advantage of the potential for conflict this kind of behavior creates, Deitz prefers to write the world of human relationships as he would like it to be. Enlightened perhaps, but... yawn. Moreover Deitz misunderstands a fundamental point: the more regimented a society is, the more harshly regulated sex tends to be as well. "So what?" you might ask. "It's a fantasy." Sorry, you still have to have believable characters with recognizable emotional dilemmas. In fact, it's even more important, because the reader is already asked to suspend disbelief on so many other things.
I turned the pages willingly enough, but found myself getting frequently annoyed. Since reviews suggest that the 3rd and 4th books in the series (SUMMERBLOOD and WARAUTUMN) are even worse than these, this is as far as I go. It's a pretty good stopping point, too, since several story arcs do resolve themselves at the end of SPRINGWAR.
Springwar.......2003-08-25
There's a problem with many fantasy sequels, which is that they seem to be slapped together in a way that doesn't really make any sense, as if the author is just trying to ride the first book's success to get a few more dollars. The good thing about "Springwar" is that it doesn't feel like that. Tom Deitz clearly planned this entire series of books from the beginning, and they all fit together as a coherent story, rather than an episodic group of events where new people and concepts just spring up out of the ground. In this book, Barrax begins his invasion of Eron from the south, while Avall rushes to bring King Gynn the news about the gem. We also see more of Strynn, Rann, Rrath, Eddyn and all the other characters from "Bloodwinter" as they get drawn into the growing battle between the two nations.
All of Deitz's strengths that were present in the first book appear here again. He has some very nice character arcs in place here, and it's good to see a fantasy author who actually thinks about how his heroes and villains would be affected by the events that they take part in. The dialogue is generally well-written, although occasionally a little bit soap operaish. I also can't fault this author's pacing. Unlike certain other fantasy authors (*cough cough Robert Jordan*), all of the books in Deitz's series contain a great deal of action and plot advancement. The central conflict does actually get resolved by the end of the book, and several important things do actually happen to all of the main characters.
A final note about magic in "Springwar". One of the things that I liked about the first book was that only very minor supernatural elements were present; I think that many of the best modern fantasy authors are realizing that my including fewer mythical elements, they can focus more on the human beings at the heart of the story. In this volume, however, the presence of magical power increases quite a bit. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I think that the way the character respond to the discovery of their magical abilities is very realistic. On the other hand, the one might view the power of the gems as a contrived plot device that allows them to solve all their problems without real effort, thus rendering the series less realistic than authors such as George R. R. Martin or Robin Hobb. But despite that fact, I still highly recommend these books as one of the few intelligent and mature series in the genre.
Impossible to put down........2002-03-10
Deitz has once again created a fantasy masterpiece. I find Deitz's ability to present villians as heroes when it is neccesary quite stunning. Also the rationale behind each characters motives draw the reader ever further and further into this novel. I would recommend this series to any serious fantasy reader.
gripping fantasy!.......2000-09-19
I really enjoyed this sequel to Bloodwinter.Dietz returns us to his fantasy world of conflict and magic as forces both good and evil vie possession of the magical gems. Ixia's brutal king Barrax invades Eron and sinister priest clans plots treason.Dietz's atmospheric writing style is evident in describing use of this magical stones and some gripping battle scenes. Now bring on book 3!

When you have exhausted all other insomnia cures..........2007-09-28
I struggled with insomnia for more than 10 years. I rarely got more than 3-4 hours sleep per night. I had tried all the suggested remedies -- yoga, sleeping pills (Ambien), mild anti-depressants, etc... Nothing helped. Then I decided that enough was enough. I made sure there were no physical causes for my insomnia (such as sleep apnea) and then I got to work. I found Dr. Jacobs' book at my local library. The idea of a drug-free program appealed to me. Yes, some of his ideas may sound simple but simple has worked for me. I'm not saying I sleep eight hours a night every night but my sleep has definitely improved. I feel human again! If you are ready for help and are willing to follow the book's advice, you will see improvement. If you are like most people who want a magic pill for insomnia -- you won't find it here. Once you are ready to put in some effort, give the book a try. Attitude is everything!
Say Good Night to Insomnia.......2007-07-15
The book does contain some helpful (and drug free) ideas to help with insomnia. It is a quick read but is very wordy. I think the book could have written in half as many pages.
I bought the book used, almost half priced, so I guess I got my monies worth!!
Drug-free help .......2007-07-07
In a society where drugs are often prescribed as a first step toward treatment for pretty much every ailment, this six-week therapy program aims to give the sufferer help without the use of drugs, thereby avoiding the possible side effects and dependency that drugs sometimes cause. A long-time insomnia sufferer myself, this unfortunately was the very last thing that was recommended to me after a year of doctor's visits, a very unpleasant polysomnogram, and various drug prescriptions that I reacted badly to. Having taken biofeedback therapy many years ago for migraine relief, I had already been introduced to the potential for the power of the mind over the body, and this therapy program incorporates that, and other self-help methods, to alleviate insomnia. And as a current user of this program, I can say it works. An open mind is required to make this work; skepticism and negativity will surely cause it to fail. I recommend this highly to anyone who suffers from insomnia. And as an added bonus, this program was much more affordable than even ONE of the many prescriptions I had tried. If it doesn't work for you, you have only lost a few dollars. If it does, it was priceless.
Great Book and one other recommendation.......2007-05-28
Great insights and very well written. Also, for those of you in search of an effective sleep aid, I found and bought a pretty cool system on Ebay called the `Sleep Wizard'...it's a white noise program but way batter and more varied than others I have tried before, cost me $10 and I would have spent several times that price. Here'a the link:
[...]
Everyone can benefit.......2007-05-04
Everyone sleeps and so everyone can benefit enormously from this book. It describes various processes that take place in our bodies and gives a large amount of suggestions for improving ourselves in various aspects of our bodies and minds. The book explains things both scientifically and simply, so it can be appreciated by people of all levels.
If one wanted to follow the method, there are several forms and charts to fill out in order to keep up easily. I didn't do this, I just picked up on all the little tips throughout and I think the book definitely helped me learn to deal with stress and sleep better.

Delicious gourmet dishes.......2002-10-02
I collect many kosher cook books, but this one was wonderful. All the recipes I have tried were very good. Especially the spinach/heart of palm salad, carrot kugel, ultimate chocolate cake, and some chicken recipes. There is one chicken dish with peanut sauce that didn't turn out, but everything else was great. I also get great raves from guests! This book has become the fashionable trendy cook book that Jews use...all my friends have it!
Mazel Tov.......2002-09-26
I am not Jewish, but I found this to be a thoroughly informative book. I first saw the book at our friends house during one of the high holy days. Needless to say I rushed out and purchased it. The meals are very easy to prepare and the feedback we have received from our Gentile friends has been fantastic. I can't wait until Thanksgiving!

Great reference book........2007-09-23
This book has may types of fish profiles, including many popular aquarium fish, and great pictures. It has the nifty plastic jacket, which anyone with a fish tank will appreciate. It is a small enough book to bring with you to the fish store, and informative enough to make you glad you brought it.
Not too bad.......2007-09-23
An OK book that is very brief in its details of fish species and occasionally slightly inaccurate with regards compatibilities. Very nice pictures that get it an additional star from me just because they make species identification a lot easier than some of other books. It has a nice plastic cover for those times when you're reading and dripping at the same time and is handily pocket sized for taking to the shops with you.
Great Book.......2007-05-24
Not a lot of detailed info, but it's a great visual reference guide. I love it and it's cheap!
Very helpful for the new aquarist.......2007-03-10
As someone new to the hobby, this book helped me tremendously in selecting not only what fish I could and should put in my new fish tank, but helpful tips as to how I should care for them (Ph levels, water temps, compatible types, etc.). I reviewed this book and read "The Essential Freshwater Aquarium" guide; both books help ensure that my first try as an aquarist results in a healthy environment for my fish. I was so impressed by the A to Z Guide that I bought one for a friend who has kept fish for over a year but was mixing fish indiscriminately without regard to the size of her tank or the type of fish already in the tank. We both now have a high enthusiasm for our aquariums and consult the guide before any new fish purchase. Highly recommended for new and experienced aquarists.
Tropical Freshwater Aquarium Fish.......2007-02-20
This books fits our needs quite well. It is appropriate for our 7-year old son while at the same time provides details an adult reader would find interesting and useful.

Book Description
MUST-HAVE HISTORY BOOK OF THE ENTIRE WORLD ... FROM 1493
Hartmann Schedel's Chronicle of the World, widely known as The Nuremberg Chronicle, after the German city in which it was created, was a groundbreaking encyclopedic work and, at the time, the most lavishly illustrated book ever printed in Europe.
Both a historical reference work and a contemporary survey of urban culture at the end of the 15th century, the Chronicle had a remarkable influence on the cultural, ecclesiastical and intellectual history of the Middle Ages. In over 1,800 superb woodcut illustrations the Chronicle depicted events from the Bible, human monstrosities, portraits of kings, queens, saints and martyrs, and allegorical pictures of miracles, as well as views of a great number of "modern" cities, many of which had never before been documented.
Today, copies of the Chronicle sell for up to $400,000. TASCHEN was granted rare access to an extraordinary hand-colored copy, and has created a complete facsimile of outstanding quality, true to the original in every respect. In case you don't read Old German, the comprehensive annex, with summaries of the book's main stories, provides a user-friendly way to explore this amazing historical masterpiece.
**Hardcover covered in padded and embossed velvet.
Customer Reviews:
German or Latin.......2007-04-08
I cannot reconcile this "old German" facsimile with the original Nuremberg Chronicle which was written in Latin. There was a "pirated" version produced in 1496 in German in which the pages were smaller.
Is there a simple explanation for this?
Yvonne van Wensveen (myblackhen).
Extraordinary find.......2003-05-23
I am a confirmed "bookaholic."...With my purchase of Taschen's edition of Schadel's Weltchronik...I may never buy another book...I became aware of the availability of the book at Taschen's website and was delighted to learn Amazon.com actually had it in stock (as well as Taschen's edition of Luther's Bible...my next acquisition).
This is a very substantial book. Attractively bound. And, the reproductions are wonderful. It is an enjoyable window into printing and woodcuts and world of 16th Century thought. I found my (mediocre) skills in German enhanced my appreciation of the work, but I think that even without understanding the text, the book-as-art stands up well by itself.
Füssel's commentary was interesting and informative and a substantial addition to an already fine volume. Lacking specific background, I could not read it critically but I enjoyed it very much.
Finally, the book, it seems to me, is an incredible bargain at the price.
Another exquisite book from Taschen.......2003-05-12
It isn't necessary to be familiar with old German to appreciate the beauty of this book. It is a wonderful object just to look at.
The one drawback for me is the colouring of the woodcuts. I enjoy coloured woodcuts, but unfortunately the job of colouring these was given to someone unusually inept, a genuine 15th Century donut, who performed the task with neither ability nor care.
But you have to go with what you can get - and this book is still worth it.
It's been a while since I drooled in a book store..........2002-12-23
If you're here, and know what the heck this book is, then I can readily recommend that you snap it up without reservation. Seriously now, how often do things like this get reprinted? The Liber chronicarum isn't exactly mass market, now is it? ;) There really are only two drawbacks to this edition. First, the cover is an artificial suede that is -really- suceptiable to damage. Be careful with it, and consider making or purchasing some sort of cover for it. The second drawback is merely personal preference - this edition reproduces a hand-colored version of the text. This book is absolutely beautiful in it's reproduction, but I've never been a big fan of colored woodcuts. If you like your woodcuts chromatically enabled, all the better.
The most beautiful book you'll ever own.......2002-08-03
Wow. This is a stunning book. I'm a real book-o-holic but this is the first book I feel priviliged to own. If you're interested in the medieval period this should really be in your bookcase. Or maybe even in a display case.
The book is a reprint of a 1493 chronicle. The entire history up until then is covered through their eyes, including, of course, the bible. Since Columbus hadn't returned yet, the discovery of the Americas isn't even covered yet, a fact that really made me feel in touch with just how old this chronicle really is.
I especially like the way the chronicle reflects the renaissance spirit, neatly weaving the long-known stories of the bible, the rediscovered Greek and Roman sagas (Illias etc) and 'modern' history into one coherent chronicle.
A slight warning, however: if you want an easy-to-read history book, you'd better shop around some more. The letters are gothic, and the chronicle itself is in middle-German. The introduction is in English however, and the woodcarvings are beautiful enough to warrant buying this book even if you can't make out exactly what it says.
If you ever want to buy someone who loves (medieval) history a special gift, get him/her this book. You'll make a friend for life :-)
