LAVENDER BLUES.......2006-01-17
This 8th entry in the popular China Bayles series should please established fans and newcomers. China is preparing for her wedding (finally) to former police chief Michael McQuaid. She is getting assistance of course from best friend Ruby and her estranged mother, Leatha. But of course, a murder of a local real estate scumbag, might interfere with the wedding plans as China becomes embroiled in solving the case.
Albert has an easygoing affability in her stories, and once again gives readers information on the various herbs involved in the story, and even a few recipes. The mystery itself is rather interesting, with a few twists at the end you may not see coming. All in all, a good entry in this entertaining "cozy" series.
China deals with murder and marriage.......2004-09-09
China Bayles and her fiance Mike McQuaid have finally set the date for their wedding. McQuaid becomes embroiled in a murder case and China decides that she'd better help him solve it if he is to be at the wedding on time. The victim is Edgar Coleman, a local real estate developer who will stoop to any means to complete a deal. He needed approval from the city council for a new real estate deal to go through, so he methodically gathered incriminating information on each council member and threatened to reveal their secrets if they didn't give him a favorable vote. His other character flaw was a penchant for chasing women other than his wife. These two factors provide a slew of suspects for the murder. Author Albert skillfully weaves a lot of red herrings into the book, along with the frantic preparations for a wedding which is threatened by all sorts of catastrophes. Only China could go through a 2-week pre-wedding period such as the one in this book. This is Albert at her best!
China's back -- in more ways than one!.......2002-05-11
LAVENDER LIES is about the eighth China Bayles novel. Albert is SUCH a good writer, her books are a true pleasure to read -- and hard to put down. This one may be the most fun so far, as the wacky women work together to solve the multi-layered mystery while China and McQuaid prepare for their possibly doomed wedding. I look forward to my visits to Pecan Springs, Texas. And I appreciate her little herb-related quotes, myths, and recipes. I've never actually made anything from a recipe in these books, but I must say Ruby's Lemonade with Lavender and Rosemary sounds like heaven on earth. And what my objection was in the last book was that McQuaid did all the work and called all the shots -- this time the very competent ladies -- with China back in charge -- do it all. And it's a lot of fun.
getting predictable.......2002-04-30
Susan Wittig Albert's mystery novels are still enjoyable, but I'm beginning to figure out the "pattern" behind them. At the risk of committing a **SPOILER**, it seems that there is always one character who doesn't seem to have any reason to be in the book, just sort of shoehorned in, and that person always turns out to have done it. I hope the next few novels contain more twists.
The Best For Awhile!!.......2001-09-30
This is a good China Bayles mystery. I was a little disillusioned after the previous two in the series, but this is a great one. I really enjoyed the story, and the wedding sideline was a great one. China is her usual rushed self in this story, and she's trying hard to concentrate only on her upcoming nuptials, but gets involved in spite of herself with another murder. This murder is of a citizen of Pecan Springs, who no one will really miss that much (except his wife). He's a sharpy, and he gets cut on his own misdeeds. The story moves along swiftly, and we see China trying to get wedding plans in amongst murders, hurricanes and faled wedding cakes. It's great. Read this for a whomping good ride.

Uplifting and Hopeful.......2001-10-18
This book expresses the love that a mother has for a daughter, and coping with tragedies while staying close with our Father in Heaven. I love reading books and this one is by far the most impressive work I have ever read. This book is inspiring and gives hope to those teenagers out there who have run out of hope and think they've run into a dead end.
Wow! What a powerful book!.......1999-07-24
This book is awesome! I am so grateful for the chance I had to read it! I became so into the book I couldn't put it down. Then I wondered what happened so I read the next two. The fourth one I am starting. This book is so powerful and a real tear jurker!
must read agine.......1999-07-12
Ariana is the strongest women I have ever read about in my life I have just finished reading the first book and I can wait to read the second when I get it.
A Must Read!!!.......1999-06-18
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover! I simply couldn't put it down. In fact, I started reading it when I was in early labor with my first child in an attempt to keep my mind off the labor. I ended up reading the entire book while my labor was stalled, finishing it before my baby was born! The characters were believable, and I couldn't help falling in love with them. I highly recommend this book! I went out and bought the sequels and had read them all over the next couple of weeks.
Book Description
At last, here's a book that synthesizes the increasingly popular CR (Calorie Restriction) diet for the layperson. CR is not a diet primarily about weight loss, although readers will lose weight. CR is about eating highly nutritious foods to extend your healthy years.
Here's the concept: eat fewer calories and choose foods more carefully. This will reallocate how your metabolism uses its resources to convert food into energy; in other words, what goes in will be used more efficiently. You will feel better and function better—and the big bonus: the CR diet slows aging. CR lengthens the periods of youth and middle age and substantially reduces the risk of virtually all the diseases of aging.
Brian Delaney and Lisa Walford, two longtime CR practitioners, will take you on a handheld stroll through the process, including an introduction to CR, how to do it, some of the key issues in the current dialogue, and the skinny on superfoods.

Great into to calorie restriction and its benefits.......2007-09-22
This book about calorie restriction and how to go about trying it. The authors are Brian Delaney, President of the Calorie Restriction Society, and Lisa Walford, the daughter or Dr Roy Walford who was one of the early proponents of calorie restriction for people. They are both well connected to the community that is trying calorie restriction, and well grounded in the science behind it.
From their experience, improvements in health and slower aging come from any regimen that includes reduced calories over what is considered a normal level. So you can eat some high-glycemic food such as rice or potatoes, or eat a really healthy diet where all of your carbohydrates come from vegetables and fruit. You can eat one meal a day, or graze throughout the day. All of the apparent benefits will result as long as you eat enough less than normal.
There are a number of ways to track progress: watch your weight and when it gets to a BMI of 15-16 then eat enough to keep it there; track total calories relative to normal for your body height/frame; or track health markers such as fasting blood sugar, liver function, lipids (e.g. cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), blood pressure, and immune system function.
They emphasize repeatedly that you should talk to your doctor or health professional before going on this regimen, and that it is not for everyone. If you are pregnant or want to get pregnant or have certain medical conditions you should definitely NOT use this diet. If you have a lot of weight to lose to get to a low BMI, or if you are over 60, you should definitely take it slow and not make too radical a change.
They make a number of key points:
* Because you are eating a reduced-calorie diet, you have to make sure that you get enough nutrients: protein, fat, calories, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
* This is why most practitioners eat all of their carbohydrates in the form of vegetables and fruit, because they have very high nutrition value per calorie. When you eat a lot of calories from starch (bread, potatoes, white rice, other starches) it is very hard to reduce your calorie intake enough and still get enough nutrition.
* If you adopt this regimen, you have to find a way to do it that works for you and lets you enjoy life. Don't stress out about it
* Exercise and managing stress are important for everyone
I really liked their idea of "energy density" and "nutrition density" for food. For example, cheese has high energy density; vegetables have high nutrition density. To feel fuller and to get enough nutrition, you want a lot of your calories to come from high-nutrition, low-energy-density foods. This is a good point for everyone, not just when you are on a calorie restriction diet.
I had a couple of issues with their advice:
* they do not recommend using omega-3 supplements, suggesting that you will get enough omega-3 from a high-nutrient diet. I don't think this is the case, to get enough omega-3 for optimal brain function you almost have to supplement, or eat very expensive grass-fed meat, grass-fed dairy, etc, or eat very large amounts of fish.
* they mention fasting as an alternative for reducing total calories, that this is easier for some people. However, this book was written before research came out that suggests fasting is not healthy on a regular basis.
* they are convinced that calorie restriction will increase maximum human lifetimes, but I don't think that we know or can say at this point. (It is clear that calorie restriction with good nutrition does increase your life expectancy, but not that you should expect to live past 100 on this regimen.)
There is some research that suggests that the important thing is not the reduced calories, but the hormones that are released when you are hungry. So I think I'm going to try skipping lunch and snacks, having a normal breakfast and dinner, and eating enough at those meals to feel full. I'll continue to track my weight and ongoing blood sugar levels, and see what the effect is
Fascinating stuff, and I recommend the book.
Feel better, live longer, what else could you want.......2007-08-31
I'm 75 years old. Since getting with the longevity diet, I feel better, my health parameters are better, and I'm getting lighter. I believe I can think a little better. I'll tell you something, when you're my age, sometimes living longer doesn't seem so good. But, when you feel good, there's really no limit to how long you want to live. Because you feel good, you reach out. You make new, younger friends, because you're acting younger. You exercise because you feel like exercising. You really must get this book. Read it and do it. It will make a wonderful difference in your life. Will the Longevity Diet really make you live longer? Well, I think so, but it really doesn't matter, because your life will be better. I think so much of this book that I buy it to give away.

Longevity Diet.......2007-06-27
There is something wrong with the book you sent me. About every 10 pages, a page is faded and impossible to see the print on it. I just skip the page and go on, but it irritates me. I haven't done anything about it because I don't want the hassle of wrapping it up, taking it to the post office, and paying for postage on it. If you see fit, I'd appreciate your sending me another one plus a container and postage to send the first one back in.
The Longevity Diet: Discover Calorie Restriction.......2007-05-13
I found this book to be excellent in summarising the findings on calore restriction which I was familiar with. I had read all of Roy Walford's books and am convinced of the benefits of calorie restriction. Because the book encapsulates the key principles, it will be helpful for someone who is beginning and at the same time for those who need a refresher such as myself. I find the daily planning will enable me to monitor my food intake, especially the types of foods that are nutrient rich and have low energy density. I might add that it's not just theoretical as there are testimonies from people on the whys and hows of the Longevity Diet. I recommend this book highly for anyone who wants to age healthily.
Reverend Brian Bower.......2007-01-18
I found Delaney & Walford's "Longevity Diet" non-threatening, non-technical, and educational. It is a sufficient introduction to the concept of calorie restriction (CR)for a layman audience, but lacks details on some of the more in depth ideas of gerontology. The Longevity Diet has reasonable recommendations concerning changes in ones diet and includes a rather comprehensive list of the nutritional content of many CR friendly foodstuffs. Thankfully, many of the details that are missed or simplified in The Longevity Diet are explained in several online resources that are listed in the back of the book.
For the price it is hard to beat, if only as an introduction to the world of CR.

With Love from My Kitchen.......2007-04-12
This is a book that can become a priceless heirloom. I collect recipes from my family and friends and write them in my "With Love from My Kitchen" book. I also put the name of the individual who gave me the recipe along with the date and comments about the person or recipe. My recipes date back over 20 years. This book is one of my most prized possessions.
A top rate keepsake........2007-01-04
I received this cookbook as a present when I moved into my first apartment. My mom wrote some of my favorite recipes in it. They are in her hand, so it makes the book a keepsake. My wife and I use it on a weekly basis, and we have added some of our favorites to it also. The whole book is blank with ledger lines on the pages. Each section has a tab for easy locating. I bought 3 more of these for my mom to give to my siblings this Christmas. They also liked the gesture. If your kids like to cook, or just have a few recipes they liked from your house, this would make a great gift.
I love this book!.......2005-08-17
I received this as a wedding gift 20 years ago. My mom wrote several recipes in it. Now that my mom is no longer living, I have a piece of her living on. Every time I open up this cookbook to use one of Mom's recipes, there it is, in her handwriting. It is one of the most treasured items I own. I hope to pass it along to my girls some day.
Perfect for any kitchen.......2004-05-25
My mom bought one of these books when I was a little kid and growing up, I've always been able to turn to it for the best of her best recipes (and wow, is she a great cook!). After my first year of college, I found I had a lot of recipes just floating around on 3x5 cards and decided to consolidate them into one book. I couldn't find this in any book stores or cooking stores around here, but finally found it on Amazon. It's fantastic! It's exactly what I need and I look forward to filling it with the best recipes I find and using it as I grow older and get married and start my own family. Buy this book! :D
With Love From My Kitchen.......2002-10-23
This cookbook is fabulous...an ingenious idea! After years of trying to sort out my mothers recipe cards and never being able to find the recipe I was looking for, I was delighted to find this cookbook that I can write all of my favorite recipes in! Now I just flip to the correct section and have my recipe in seconds. My mother and my sister want one too!
Book Description
More than just pages of ingredients, this book is a special way to record priceless moments, special events, and family traditions that grandmother loves to share-a lifetime keepsake and family treasure. With journal prompts at the beginning of each chapter-some for Grandmother and some for Grandchild-to fill out, the emphasis is more on the recipes and activities that Grandmother and Grandchild can do together.

Good and Light.......2006-09-01
This is not a great informative book, however, it does have some beautiful, whimsical and cute photographs of Golden Retreivers. Occassionally, it also is thought provoking in a sentimental or philosophical sense. Worth having on your coffee table or in your reception area.

90 Alphabets in Cross Stitch.......1998-07-06
I was not impressed when I bought this book as it actually does not contain 500 Alphabets, in fact there are about 90. There are some numbers from 0-9, not enought to make up the other 410 designs though (and a set of numbers is not an alphabet). I know that Julie Hasler has done a series of '500' books, but the title clearly states that there are *500* Alphabets in Cross Stitch. Apart from the small fact that there are 400-odd missing it's not a bad book. I think this is a breach of the Fair Trading Act, the commerce commission should do these people! If anyone can explain how 90 and 500 are related, I'd love to know!

Book Description
This study describes the embedding of the Gospel of John in the city life of Ephesus. It uses the epigraphical and historical materials of first-century Ephesus as the point of reference for a reading of John. The study is a specific demonstration of the linguistic supposition that the use of the same (combination of) words in different co-texts evokes semantic similarities and dissimilarities which influence the process of giving meaning to a text. Reading John against the background of Ephesus influences its impact. Five topics have been selected: the use of names; the use of the titles for the emperors and Artemis in relation to the titles used for Jesus; the social city life; the group formations; and the function of the high priests in relation to the imperial cult.

Madre Maria de San Jose (1656-1719)--mystic, chronicler, and co-founder of an Augustinian convent-- inscribed her life story within the model of spiritual autobiography set by St. Augustine and Teresa of Avila, but at the same time included her individual story as a seventeenth-century woman of the landowning classes in New Spain. The resulting manuscript records in intimate detail her family life, convent surroundings, and social milieu; it introduces us to a combative and engaging person and gives us a rare and vivid glimpse of a complex society.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting - one nun's life in Mexico some 300 years ago.......2001-08-24
Madre Maria de San Jose was a relatively uneducated women who spent 21 years waiting to enter a convent. She wrote of her family and convent life at the request of her confessors, and gives us a close look at what life in Mexico during the late 1600s and early 1700s was like for her. These are not the translations of her complete journals - there were 12 volumes - but, rather, selections from her writings. The selections give the reader a panoramic view of Madre Maria's life. The journal entries can be a bit slow-going at times, mostly because of the writing style that Maria used. And the writing style would seem to be typical for many who wrote these types of journals. I found the section "Studies of Maria de San Jose's Life and Text" to be much easier to read, and somewhat more interesting. This section gives us more historical information about her life, her family, and what convent life was like at the time that Madre Maria lived.
