Book Description
In the dark days and biting windstorms of an Edinburgh winter, two drop-out kids dive off the towering Forth Road Bridge. A civic office is spattered by a grisly gun-blast. Two suicides and a murder that just don't add up, unless John Rebus can crunch the numbers. Following a trail that snakes through stark alleys and sad bars, shredded files and lacerated lives, Rebus finds himself up against an airtight, murderous conglomerate on the make in every arena of power. It's leeching the life and soul out of his city and, if it can, him too...
Customer Reviews:
Great Mysteries.......2006-07-20
I recommend every book by this author. Whenever I start an Inspector Rebus, I don't want to put it down.
Flawed, but always striving for justice.......2006-05-02
LET IT BLEED is a prime example of Ian Rankin's Rebus, bucking the system in order to pursue the pure essence of justice, consequences be damned. Far from a Galahad, Rebus is a deeply flawed man, tough on family and any who try to get too near, entirely too dependent on alcohol to quell the feeling of rage and hurt he feels.
The gradual shift from a search for a solution to some mysterious suicides to finding a way to punish those who seem to be beyond punishment is classic Rankin. Rebus's response to the class system seems much more than a plot device; it becomes a vital link to understanding Rebus a bit better. His rage, when directed at injustice is a fearsome weapon, but it also becomes evident how important his life as policeman is to his continued existence. Rankin continues to combine an excellent procedural with a truly interesting and believable figure. LET IT BLEED is an excellent example of when Rankin is firing on all cylinders.
This Man's Writing is Addictive and Should Come With a Warning Label.......2006-04-23
More than the seven books before it, this one builds from a tiny thread until it creates a magnificent tapestry. Starting with a car chase, after two supposed kidnappers, in which "Fart" Lauderdale is taken out of the picture, and replace by Rebus' old flame Gill Templer; to the end, where "Wee Weed" Flower gets his just desserts, the action just builds and builds.
Though he loses Patience, in more than one way, he gains a better and stronger relationship with his daughter Sammy, who has come back to Edinburgh to do social work with prisoners and ex-cons.
I won't tell you the story because that's why you read the book in the first place, and I would only spoil some of the more surprising parts. But, all you favorite characters and neighborhoods are in it, or their facsimilies.
I do have two complaints: 1) John is getting to the point where he needs to go into AA, and after the accident he now has more burns, brakes and bruises than Luke Davenport, 2) Ian has to learn to write better dialogue in the american vernacular if he is going to include one as a character. I know Rankin, FYTP.
Slainte.
Very Good Service.......2006-01-16
despite the order being placed so near to Christmas and the projected delivery date being in the new year, I received this item in plenty of time to gift wrap it for Christmas.
Very good service indeed!
Edinburgh is nearly as vivid as Rebus.......2004-06-03
Scottish author Rankin's eighth Inspector John Rebus novel begins on "A winter night, screaming out of Edinburgh." A car chase in pursuit of two young maybe-kidnappers, ends in violence and suicide, launching this dark, atmospheric tale of conspiracy and greed.
The Edinburgh winter is nearly as vivid a character as the intense, brooding Rebus. Alone again and incapable of expressing his emotions, Rebus lives for his job and sleeps in his chair - after more than a few pints and shots.
Still haunted by the surreal death of the would-be kidnappers, Rebus is confronted with another spectacular suicide, this one for the edification of an ambitious councilman. Doggedly pursuing tenuous connections, Rebus begins to unravel an elaborate scheme with roots in the prisons and slums and the highest offices in Scotland. And more people die.
With a complex and absorbing plot, shot through with blasts of icy Edinburgh wind and Rebus' bleak determination, this is another powerful and absorbing winner from a strong, talented writer.

Detective Inspector John Rebus is not a man easily intimidated, so when political heavyweights start to lean on the dour, moralistic Edinburgh detective to stop an investigation, Rebus doggedly digs in and follows the case as it moves from embezzlement to murder and finally to conspiracy at the highest level of government.
Book Description
Two boys hug and jump
One man blows his brains out and does his lady a last favour
Alone in his cell another sets a ball rolling that may demolish a glittering career
Everyone keeps secrets and sometimes not just their own. In an Edinburgh winter the wind blows chill and penetrating. For Rebus it slams one door shut only to open another. Investigating the disappearance of the Provost's daughter leads him from the Old Town to Silicon Glen, from drug addicts to government ministers. And plants the seed that grows into a nagging belief that there may be some criminals beyond the grasp of modern justice.
Customer Reviews:
Stark and Compelling: Best of the Series So Far.......1998-12-10
All of the Inspector Rebus novels share a gritty sensibility, a dry Scottish wit, and well drawn characters. Sometimes the plots don't live up to the rest of the package. But not this novel: Ian Rankin has put together a wonderfully dark and intricate mystery that remains plausible and compelling to the end. Don't miss it!

Gary Indiana's essays have long been considered the cutting edge of journalism. His pungent commentary and acerbic critiques have appeared in The Village Voice and Artforum and are now collected in
Let it Bleed. Indiana has perfected the craft of the personal, cultural essay: informed, honest, catty, precise and witty. These pieces give us a glimpse into the state of culture today: it isn't always pretty. Indiana's intelligence shows though in every piece, and his ability to see through the shame of culture, sex, pretension and politics are refreshing and potent.
Let it Bleed enters the culture wars fully armed, and Indiana isn't taking prisoners.

Customer Reviews:
This is criticism?.......1999-12-04
If you think that good criticism is based on an ability to make fun of everything, including people's physical shapes (double-chins, etc.), then this is the book for you. Indiana seems to feel that everything is waiting for his poison pen, and scurrilous laughter. Yet he and his writings are very vulnerable targets for enormous satire themselves. On a larger level, Indiana is symptomatic of a time when there's a confusion between genuine criticism and personal attack. In the former, he's lacking; in the latter, he's a good practitioner--too pretentious to be other than good. He seems to want to imitate Gore Vidal, a real expert at both types of criticism. Vidal, at his best, illuminates, and even champions, while Indiana merely fires and poses, embarrassingly.

Wow........1998-09-14
The story is of a girl in a town on the back of a dragon frozen in place by a 1000 year old spell, who's father works (as you can imagine) hunting scales on the back of the dragon. Due to an unlucky twist of fate, the girl must hide inside the dragon's mouth, then finds herself a prisoner of the creatures that live inside the inert, yet still powerful and very aware dragon.
Lucius Shepard is a stunningly beautiful writer, and this novel and Life During Wartime are two of the best stories I have ever read.
A Dragon Story Done Differently.......1998-04-29
This is not your standard dragon story. Shepard has done something utterly amazing: a story for adults. With an ending that you will not forget. Shepard wrote two other dragon stories, all were a challenge to himself inasmuch as he greatly dislikes most dragon stories; so he wrote one that he would like. And if you know Shepard, you know to expect the unexpected.

Unreasonable format.......2007-05-14
A total waste of my money.
The format of the cookbook was confusing and frustrating--organized according to the season of the year, which may seem like a nice idea, but unrealistic. Trying to find something nice to cook for the evening's meal meant searching thru each season and then searching the dinners-only for that season. Finally, there just weren't many recipes offered.
I wish I could have returned the book, but then I'd have to pay shipping again and it just wasn't worth the time & effort.
Very Good recipes.......2007-05-09
This has a lot of great ideas for recipes that I intend to try. Very good book.
Great if you like Tofu!.......2007-05-07
The book looks great on the outside however many of the recipes are vegan style or tofu related.
REAL EASY AND YUMMY.......2007-04-17
The recipes in this book are indeed delicious and easy and I feel better when I eat the RealAge way. In fact, since eating this way I have more energy and my arthritis seems better. I only really have time to cook on weekends and one night a week but thankfully my husband helps on the other days. I just wish I had more time to cook but when I do I turn to this book as a guide! The Grillmeister.......2007-09-04
I have owned a grill for may years, but never really enjoyed grilling because it never turned out that great. I would just throw meat on the grill and then I guess just hope for the best. That changed when I got this book for Christmas. I was so excited about the guidance that this book provided me with, I was grilling ribs on my back deck three weeks later, in 15 degree weather. They turned out to be the best ribs I ever made, maybe even ever tasted. I have made several other recipes from the book since then, and they were spectacular. I am determined to try them all. Also, I have bought two more of Steven Raichlen's books, Beer can Chicken and the Barbecue Bible, which have proven to be invaluable as well.
For the man who thinks he knows everthing about ribs.......2007-08-06
Bought this for my husband. He thought he knew everything thing there was to know about ribs, until he read this book. Very good. Highy recommend it to all rib enthusiasts.
Great ribs, great fun.......2007-04-09
I got this book last summer and have used it many times - there's alot of basic info on ribs to understand how to cook various types of ribs to get the best results in each case. The first recipe in the book for basic ribs is winner - I make it all the time in the summer, adjusting it here and there to get different flavors. He really knows alot about the grill, so that information is worth the price of the book alone. If you love ribs, buying this book is a no brainer.
good book needs more pork.......2007-01-20
I like Steven,s other books better. i was looking more for pork rib recipes
Fun Barbeque.......2007-01-10
The book is certainly worth the price. Tips for the beginner are valid and the receipes for marinades are numerous

Book Description
A review of crochet standards, chart reading, and technique is combined in this guide with a course on sizing crocheted garments to fit like a glove—all in the interest of encouraging crocheters to try their hand at lace fashions that look as though they came straight off a ready-to-wear runway. Patterns include a metallic ribbon Chanel-style jacket, a lace shift dress with a mohair lace camisole, a cowl-neck trapeze tunic, and a chevron wedding dress with matching fingerless gloves. Those who want a gorgeous look in a smaller project will revel in the striking designs for hats, jewelry, and spangled evening bags. Explanations of accurate measuring, silhouettes, circular construction, shell and chevron stitches, and custom detailing demystify the more advanced designs, and beautiful photographs showcase all the finished pieces.
Customer Reviews:
Great techniques for making stylish crocheted garments.......2007-09-30
Lily Chin provides a wealth of information about constructing garments that are wearable and appealing, instead of looking like an afghan masquerading as clothing. She covers information about sizing your garment to fit, treating the yarn, garment pattern creation, and a technique of crocheting that eliminates the gap at the ends of the rows.
In addition, Chin presents a variety of crocheted garments, most of which are fairly interesting, in a range of colors, from pink to black to, yes, brown. They include tunics, stoles/scarves, capes, and dresses. The color of the demonstration piece's yarn, and whether it is in accord with the reader's personal taste, should hardly be an impediment in the book.
For the ideas of garment construction alone, this book stands out as exceptionally helpful.
totally loved the book.......2007-03-30
The book shows me how to begin a project from start to finish. Overall, she did a great job in emphasizing swatch, gauge, blocking and when to kill a fabric. Some things are very essential, and this book delivers what needs to properly happen, so nothing is taken away from the pleasure of wearing one's own work.
I liked the designs and the charts/schematics. I have seen and touched the actual garments which are at times shown in close-up pictures. Even the book feels luxurious to the touch. It is a delight to own this book.
You'll learn so much from this book!.......2007-03-06
I have taken several of Lily's Classes at CGOA conferences. I love her practical style. She goes further in the book, teaching the advantages of steam block v. wet block, crocheting into the last stitch, other small little tips that will make your garment appear less "homemade".
The lessons on fitting, draping, and garment design are invaluable for knitters and crocheters alike.
This book assumes that you know basic crochet.
Crochet garments that fit.......2007-02-27
The nice point of this book is you can learn to crochet garments, rather than afghans and boxy jackets. Lily Chin, who is known for fitted knit and crochet designs, shows you how to crochet swatches and then draft a pattern for anything you might want to make.
As to patterns in this book, there are all kinds of suits, dresses, jackets as you'd expect. You actually are making fabric in a way--some open, some densely crocheted, some even rippled like those inevitable couch afghans.
Some of the dresses in here had me laughing about an incident years ago; a colleague in a lab where I worked had crocheted a VERY open dress of bright blue yarn (not ALL that different than the dress here) and then worn it over a leotard in order to attract the attention of a male colleague. When she walked in our lab wearing the dress, our eyes grew round and our mouths all took on the shape of a wordless "o." "Don't all exclaim," she purred, "I made it myself." The object of her desires, however, a crusty bachelor, stated his opinion loudly and unfavorably about this new couture, and she was seen the rest of the day, a lab coat buttoned tightly around her. Who would guess that 30 years later, this dress might be considered fashionable? And that brings me to my point; execution and materials are EVERYTHING. If you practice swatches and get your technique up to snuff, these not-that-difficult patterns will look stunning. But nothing less than good fit and finish will make these worth wearing. Pay attention to the good advice Ms. Chin provides. Also remember, dense crochet takes MUCH more yarn than knitting, so consider mill ends and other sources of good designer yarns if you are on a budget.
This book is a MUST for anyone who wants to do clothing from crochet. This will take those rippled afghans to a new level.
I'm in love with this book. Best blocking info ever!.......2007-02-22
I've got hundreds of knit/crochet books. I think this book has the best description of blocking and sizing that I've ever seen. I love Lily's understanding of garment structure from the inside out. She really explains construction well.
I happen to also love the patterns. The color scheme in the book doesn't bother me...rather it allows me to see the design rather than the colorway. I can see myself making several of the patterns in this book which is rare. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase.

Excellent.......2007-07-09
So far I love this book. It has clear useful information on design. Things like a formula for doing ovals. He says clear things like (paraphrase) if you increase on every round of a circle you will eventually begin to bunch up so crochet a row without increasing to fix this, and if you increase in the same location the edges of your circle will begin to flatten out so move your increases around.
As the book progresses it gets more creative, but I've only skimmed those pages. He goes through freeform crochet, crocheting with your fingers, spirals and other things. He also has stitch patterns which I haven't gone over yet. The book is from 79, so not many color pictures. But I haven't seen any recent crochet books that go through quite the same material. Unfortunately its due back at the library, and it won't let me renew urgh. I think it may be worth $60, depending on what your goals are. I rented my copy through a university library system.

Product Description
"Because of the high quality and the quantity of his art, Jose Guadalupe Posada is the one Mexican printmaker who has acquired posthumous and international fame. Posada was at his peak at the turn of the 20th century, during the closing years of the Diaz dictatorship. He has long been recognized as one of the personifications of the ensuing Mexican Revolution, which he did not live to see completed. Book Description
This is the spirited story of Esther Burnett Horne, an accomplished and inspiring educator in Indian boarding schools. Born in 1909, Horne attended Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, and often visited relatives on the Shoshone Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Motivated by teachers like Ella Deloria and Ruth Muskrat Bronson, Horne devoted her life to educating other Indian children. She began teaching at the Wahpeton Indian School in Wahpeton, North Dakota, in 1930 and has remained active in education to the present day.
Esther Horne and Sally McBeth developed this life history in a truly collaborative manner. McBeth carefully documented both Horne’s personal history and the creation of this work. What emerges is an engaging and informative narrative about education and identity.
