Don't waste your money.......2007-05-23
I honestly picked it up a number of times to attempt to read it, but I just could not finish this book. I am so sick and tired of reading books written by prisoners who do nothing but complain about how they're being mistreated and how they're really innocent, and the guards are mean, and the warden has it out for them.
One main point in the first couple chapters of this book (that was as far as I could get before I got too frustrated) is that the two guys, who were police officers, were convicted of committing a crime in noe state when they were really committing the same crime in another state at the same time.
If I wanted to listen to complaining, I'd hang out with teenaged girls. I wouldn't waste my money on this book by "Jimmie".
Awfully written book.......2006-08-03
This book is awful! It provides no useful insight and is written in the form of a huge question. Question - after - question with no real answers. Awful awful awful! My dog could have written a more useful tome about imprisonment than the author here did.
Poorly Written.......2006-04-17
This book is poorly written with no editing done whatsoever. There are constant misspellings and grammatical errors that detract from the book. Although there are some interesting aspects to the book, I could not get over the way it was written.
Book Description
In this national bestseller, acclaimed, award-winning psychologist Dr. David Walsh explains exactly what happens to the human brain on the path from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Revealing the latest scientific findings in easy-to-understand terms, Dr. Walsh shows why moodiness, quickness to anger and to take risks, miscommunication, fatigue, territoriality, and other familiar teenage behavior problems are so common -- all are linked to physical changes and growth in the adolescent brain.
Why Do They Act That Way? is the first book to explain the changes in teens' brains and show parents how to use this information to understand, communicate with, and stay connected to their kids. Through real-life stories, Dr. Walsh makes sense of teenagers' many mystifying, annoying, and even outright dangerous behavioral difficulties and provides realistic solutions for dealing with everyday as well as severe challenges. Dr. Walsh's techniques include, among others: sample dialogues that help teens and parents talk civilly and constructively with each other, behavioral contracts, and Parental Survival Kits that provide practical advice for dealing with issues like curfews, disrespectful language and actions, and bullying. With this arsenal of strategies, parents can help their kids learn to control impulses, manage erratic behavior, cope with their changing bodies, and, in effect, develop a second brain.

Why Do They Act That Way?: A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen.......2007-01-18
We have found this book to be extremely helpful. Raising a teenager is an amazing experience and it helps to have some expert, non partial advice that is backed by research. We especially appreciated the fact that the author does not offer excuses, but helps everyone remain responsible for their behavior, including parents. It was so helpful for us that we bought it as a gift for two different families that are raising teenagers. It was passed on to us by another family that is raising teenagers. Parents are looking for sound instruction. This book provides great insight to what is really going on inside those mysterious heads.
Why do They Act This Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain and Your Teen.......2006-10-29
David Walsh is very readable, has a strong sense of humor necessary to deal with the teen psyche, and speaks well to frustrated parents about why their kids do what they do, and how to look at from their perspective and then deal with it more effectively. It's a fun read.
Excellent ---A Must Have for ALL parents.......2005-11-04
Dr. Walsh must have known my son. I felt like he wrote this book for my family. His explanations were easily understood and very insightful, but, not an excuse for the teen's behavior. It was hard at times to put the book down. I really wish my parents had read this book.
Thank YOU, Dr. Walsh. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

A must for an parent of an adolescent.......2005-07-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it in two sittings. There were so many good and funny examples of real life situations that as a parent of a teenager, one can relate to all too well.
The author is well informed and the information about the human brain development is critical to understanding how to connect and deal with you teenager.
Highly recommend to all.
Interesting, enlightening, and useful.......2005-07-17
I was a hard sell when given this book. I was concerned that it was going to offer One Big Excuse for sorry teen-age behavior. I was already seeing the headlines: Teen Not Guilty; It wasn't his fault; His PFC made him do it!
Instead, I learned a great deal from this book. I wish the science had been there years ago. Besides getting a peek into the seemingly unfathomable teen-age brain, Walsh gave valuable information about how to handle the problems that come up as a result of the difficult transition known as adolescence. I see this information not so much as an excuse for poor behavior as it is a guide to lead people away from it. I recommend this book to teachers or anyone who has a child younger than 25!

Low-carbohydrate cookbooks are everywhere. Among the favorites is Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook, a self-published effort that provides almost 200 recipes for a wide range of foods with fewer than 10 grams of carbohydrates per serving. The book's popularity may have to do with its pitch-perfect appeal; it offers everyday recipes for the dishes many Americans love to eat--barbecued ribs, jerk chicken, and chocolate mousse among them. If these recipes adapt food traditions with a very free hand (Lauri's béarnaise sauce calls for sour cream), and require chemical food substitutes (artificial sweeteners, which can appear in recipes that are usually sugar-free), they are also easy to do and fully satisfying. The recipes range from breakfast, snack, and salad items to the usual entrees, sauces, and desserts; winners include the recipes for crab chowder and salmon poached with ginger. Readers should be aware, however, that the recipes have not received editorial scrutiny. As a result, there are errors that range from the embarrassing but not dire (Lauri neglects to tell readers to cook the bacon before using it in her eggs benedict) to the frustrating (Baked Artichoke Savories neglects to mention to bake the savories and for how long). Still, all but novice cooks should be able to fill in the blanks where necessary, and everyone should be pleased with the book's easy low-carbohydrate dishes. --Arthur Boehm

Highly Recommended.......2005-04-28
I love how simple and tasty most of these recipes are. The Breakfast Squares are such a wonderful idea. They are helping me get to work on time while sticking to my diet. And the Beef Stroganoff is the best I have ever had. Every recipe is under 10g total carbs, which is awesome.
I bought the e-book version of this cookbook on AllRecipes.com and it's the best $7 I've spent on a cookbook. What a great deal! And I can automatically scale the recipes to the number of servings that I desire ... very convenient.
My only complaint is that the dessert recipes are made with Sweet-n-Low. But I've converted most of them to Splenda by using 2 tsp Splenda for each packet of Sweet-n-Low and they have all turned out just fine. The crustless Pumpkin Pie is fantastic.
I'm buying one of the author's other cookbooks today, Low Carb Creations From Lauri's Kitchen, which a friend tells me is even better. I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone eating the low carb way.
My Favorite Low Carb Cookbook.......2004-03-16
This is my all time favorite low carb cookbook. I use it more than all of my other low carb cookbooks combined. I've had great success losing weight on the Aktins diet mostly because I use this cookbook. There is a lot of variety and most of the recipes are quite simple and quick to prepare. I love the helpful hints in the beginning of the book. Some of my favorite recipes are the Mock Mashed Potatoes, Hasbrowns, Florentine Breakfast Squares and the Seafood Newberg, yummmm! But there are many many more that I prepare on a regular basis. My husband is even losing weight (and he is not dieting)just because of the great low carb dinners I prepare for us every night. If you are living the low carb lifestyle, than I highly recommend this cookbook.
The Best in Low Carb Cooking.......2003-12-31
I started trying low carb living for my husband and I since we both wanted to eat leaner. So far this is the best low carb cookbook that I have been able to find. Some recipes are a bit high in fat, but you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef and the like. I know that you're not supposed to worry about fat with low carb diets, but I think that it only makes sense to stick with lean turkey, chicken, and fish when possible. Also, the author tends to recommend Sweet-N-Lo as a sweeter, I have used Slenda instead and had successful results. Overall, if you're a beginner or advance with low carb eating, you can probably find some helpful recipes from this book.
the best cookbook i have ever purchased.......2003-10-03
i have had this book for almost a month now and i have made many of the meals listed. i havent found one i didnt like. lauri if you see this bravo on the cabbage with bacon . a few minutes and you have an answer to the steak and salad. not that thats not good but this book gives a variety that uses basics and won't take all day. i make the breakfast squares in custard cups and have one a day with a bit of granola. i was already living atkins way but this makes it possible to see no chance of slipping back to pizza delivery. im eating better now and enjoying more. i was dissapointed that i couldn't reach avalon entp web or find the alpine bakery she mentions but a local bakery has tortillas and pancake mix and so i make due. i have 5 other low carb books including atkins and they are all gathering dust. don't waste your money on them. i hope she comes out with another and i would like more 1 servings perhaps total meal plans that give you carb counts for the day (21) or less for us resistants out here. i am going to buy a second book for a christmas gift.
Very good........2003-09-03
The recipes I tried were very good and applicable to a low carb lifestyle. I did notice, however, some editing problems amounting mainly to ingredients in the instructions that are not listed in the ingredients section of the recipe. Therefore, amounts remained ambiguous. I just guessed. Cooking is about nothing if not creativity.

Well-meaning, but advice given is often irresponsible and utterly simplistic.......2006-10-25
I bought this book along with about 15 others on dog-person relationships about 18 months ago, charmed by the title. It was a mistake.
This well-meaning book is so basic that it could only be useful to people who are absolutely new to the canine world, but look out: unfortunately, much of the advice aimed at 'beginners' is dangerously simplistic.
An example ? In the chapter entitled "choosing the best friend for you", the authors mention as sources for puppies "breeders", "pet shops", "newspapers" and "animal welfare shelters". (No mention is made of breed rescue associations or of the fact that Internet now allows you to make a thorough search for information on breeds and a first screening of available breeders and what might be the right breed for your lifestye). The real problem, though is the superficial information: under "Pet shops", which are notorious abusers of puppies and tend to buy puppies from abusive 'puppy farms', the authors wrote: "Your local pet shop is another fine source for acquiring your puppy. Pet shops normally are located in convenient areas such as your local shopping center. You will find the puppies are well cared for and you will have a large choice of various breeds in one easy to reach location."
I was staggered by the irresponsibility of this statement. Forget finding the right puppy of the litter for you, forget 'puppy testing': this is an INVITATIOn to buy a dog based on its looks, a throw-away dog from your local shopping center. I couldn't believe that 'easy to reach location' can even be mentioned as a criterion !!!!! Puppies in the shop window almost NEVER receive adequate socialisation, and present a vast range of problems, including toilet training difficulties.
Sure, the authors are Australian (they mention kangaroo meat as a possible part of your dog's diet) and I'm sure that the distances between cities, etc. make 'convenience' appetising. It may well be, too, that Australian law does not allow puppy farms and that all pet stores are run according to incredible quality standards. Nonetheless, I found this advice shocking, and it is an example of how well-meaning but utterly stupid some of the advice this book gives is. No true "experts" would ever offer this advice !!!!
Much of the advice given is outdated information on 'dominance' theory. The only positive point is that the writers attempt to promote a wishy-washy form of positive reinforcement training, but in a way so simplified as to not give readers a true background and reliable knowledge. What a disappointment.
Charming illustrations by Ms. Cole---- but that's not enough.
If you're looking for true help in training your dog, start with 'The Other End of the Leash' !

Let the Master of Brick Stitch teach you an entirely new and easy way to make these very popular small beaded purses that are worn as necklaces. And as a bonus, learn an exciting new beading stitch called Freeform, which can be used to make all sorts of jewelry. New ways to use brick stitch, new designs, new techniques, and the same best-selling Deon quality that crafters have loved for more than ten years.
Deon's new book is fully illustrated, with her characteristic easy-to-follow instructions and lots of photographs of the designs - both color and black & white. The patterns are clearly graphed by computer, making them easy to read and follow. Included are many ideas for trimming the edges of a purse, as well as a variety of necklace strap suggestions.
Deon's Tubular Brick Stitch techniques are unique, allowing the beader to start every row at the edge of the chart. The starting point does not spiral around the beadwork as with many other purse techniques, making this method easier to use. The Tubular Brick Stitch instructions include sections on design charting, tubular foundation rows, and beading the body of a purse. Various trimmings for the top and bottom of a purse, plus beautiful necklace straps are explained and illustrated. Any of these trimmings can be added to any of the purses, as the photographs suggest. Instructions for the Freeform Stitch are given and example bracelets, necklaces and purse straps are described and pictured. This stitch is a special way to "cage" a stone, glass or driftwood piece, or any bauble as a pendant in a necklace, brooch, bracelet, bolo tie, earring or barrette.
14 exciting and easy to follow Treasure Purse patterns are included: Hearts & Flowers; "Z" Purse; Frills; Fleur-de-Lis; Windmill; Hairy Elephante'; Ribbons; Wabunung; Stripes on the Diagonal; Deer To My Heart; Diamond Connection; Four-Twenty-One; Zig-Zags; and Kokopelli.
Don't miss this opportunity to own a book that you are sure to use again and again. A great gift idea for newcomers and knowledgeable beaders alike!
63 illustrations; 15 photographs; 10 pages in full color.

Not for the Beginning Beader.......2005-08-25
I love making amulet bags and couldn't wait to get my hands on this little book. Being a brick stitch addict made the wait even harder. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was when I received it.
While the individual projects are beautiful, the instructions left much to be desired for this beginning beader. Instead of having clear instructions and photos with each project, the author bunches basic instructions up at the beginning of the book. What is given is very clear, but there is a LOT left out. I am given the impression the author assumes you know how to do everything else.
The black and white photos of the projects are named but not numbered, and they aren't in any particular order I could figure out. The center of the book has numbered, colored pictures of each finished project, but not the pages where they can be found. A small thing, but it would have been useful.
Each project page itself has very little, if any, instruction beyond a pattern chart, materials, and bead chart. The accompanying photo is black and white, which isn't any help with bead color.
I hate to be so negative about the hard work the author obviously put into the projects in this book. I would rather she included more instruction and eliminated the black and white photos. The bags and few jewerly pieces are enticing, I'm just not to the point where I know all I should to make them.
This is one book I'll put aside until I learn more about making fringes and other small details which I couldn't pick up from here.
beaders review.......2002-01-05
This book has a lot to teach you on the basics. And it is done very well. This is a great beginners book, with lots of easy to follow graphs and instructions. The simple bags work up nicly. I feel you will not be disapointed with this book.

Then, make these elements more functional by turning twigs into placemats or leaves into curtain tiebacks. Collect greenery and artfully arrange it into a wreath to hang on the wall. Apply seasonal ideas—from a leaf gift tag to a twig and mini-light chandelier—to brighten up the holiday and the days that follow.

Great pictures, and the projects look fun to do. Some are more realistic than others. The tea-light holders weren't as easy as it looks, but still fun. If your house is earthy, these projects will fit in. A lot of the other projects were for people with serious time on their hands, but we've got to have goals...

Book Description
This book describes the principles of Islamic international criminal law and presents a detailed exposition of existing Islamic international crimes. The purpose of this study comparing the system of international criminal law with that of Islamic international criminal law is to evaluate certain important regulations in both these systems and examine them in the light of the growing development of international jurisprudence, thereby establishing that conflicts and apparent differences between the two systems are not principal but political, ideological, procedural and, more importantly, a result of specific interpretations of both legal systems. This is particularly important in the case of frequent international conflicts relating to the basic principles of human rights. The book therefore serves as a prominent source regarding the juridical rights of those who belong to different minority groups. It also examines the possible cooperation and accommodation of the two systems in solving the most important questions surrounding the criminality, prosecution and punishment of criminals at an international level.

Winner of the 1995 Mitchell Prize for Art History........1999-10-17
We take for granted the proliferation of portable, mass produced images in our culture, but it has been decades since the early history of the mass production of pictures has been dealt with, and Landau and Parshall's book is the most important recent work adding to our understanding of early prints. The volume's scope takes into consideration aesthetics, the art market, techniques and styles, and the historical contexts and themes of prints. These include religious themes, secular and/or antique contents, botanicals, portraits and so on. It is also wonderfully illustrated, making it, frankly, one of the most visually compelling art history books of recent years. It is very scholarly, yet is as attractive as the best exhibition catalogue (in this it reminds one of Michael Baxandall's Limewood Sculptors book, also a Mitchell Prize winner). And at it's probably the best art history bargain out there. I teach a course in Print Culture at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and this is one of my textbooks. -Allan Langdale, UCSC Art History Department

Book Description
For Gold and Glory retraces the little-known history of The Gold and Glory Sweepstakes, a highly celebrated auto racing event for African Americans, held in Indiana and throughout the Midwest during the racial turbulence of the 1920s and '30s, when the Ku Klux Klan cast a dark shadow over the social and political landscape of the state and region. The story is told through the eyes and emotions of Indianpaolis auto mechanic Charlie Wiggins, the geatest African-American driver of the era, known in the black press as "The Negro Speed King." Set against a colorful backdrop of gangsters, bootleggers, the birth of jazz and the early history of autoracing in the United States, For Gold and Glory chronicles the tragedies and triumphs of a dedicated group of individuals who overcame tremendous odds to chase their dreams. Theirs is a uniquely American story.

For racing fans of any stripe and any color.......2006-03-31
Todd Gould has written a number of articles and books on Indiana business and history. With this book he has addressed a fascinating time in racing history and Indiana history as well.
The main focus is Charlie Wiggins, an African-American auto mechanic originally from Evansville, Indiana who moved to Indianapolis in 1922 to take advantage of the bustling (yet segregated) cultural and business climate around Indiana Avenue. At the same time, several Indianapolis businessmen (both black and white) are looking into starting up the Colored Speedway Association, a racing division for Blacks that was to be modeled after Negro League Baseball. The hope was to demonstrate that African-Americans were fully capable of driving high-performance racecars and create a groundswell that would cause the American Automobile Association, the main sanctioning body of most races back then, to de-segregate big-time auto racing. Their main goal would be to race in the hometown Indy 500.
The title, 'Gold and Glory', comes from the name of an annual race started by the CSA at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. This one mile dirt track hosted 10 'Gold and Glory' 100 mile races. Charlie Wiggins won 4 of them and earned the nickname 'Negro Speed King' in race cars of his own design and manufacture.
Gould tells about the active role the KKK played in Indiana politics in the 1920s and does a nice bit of 'parrallel lives' biography with Klan leader D.C. Stephenson and Charlie Wiggins for about 50 pages in the book. He also tells about the mini-Harlem Renaissance that occurred in Indianapolis in the 1920s and the cultural life of Indy's near west-side. He also ties in a lot of basic history of the early days of auto racing - of the dangers and pitfalls of dirt track racing, of mechanics building cars in their garages, of having to tow your race car with a rope and having a young apprentice steer it while it was being towed, of race tracks being built in the middle of a cornfield for a one day event, and so on.
Gould tells the story of the CSA, Charlie Wiggins and the racial politics of the time in a near-seamless fashion. He ties it all together and leaves the reader a bit amazed. Amazed at how far we have come politcally, amazed at the changes that have taken place in racing (long gone are the days of a big-time racer building his own car in his spare time) and heartened by the fact that racing really knows no color. While the sport was strictly segregated by rule, every racer and race fan knows that every advantage has to be pursued in order to win - white teams helped black teams and black teams helped white teams. Why? Because regardless of color, racers are a group unto themselves.
This is a must read for all auto racing fans, but especially for fans of the Indy 500.
I give this one a grade of A-.

The story is told through the eyes and emotions of Indianapolis auto mechanic Charlie Wiggins. The greatest African American driver of the era, Wiggins was known as the Negro Speed King. Set against the colorful backdrop of gangsters, bootleggers, the birth of jazz, and the early history of auto racing in the United States, For Gold and Glory chronicles the tragedies and triumphs of a dedicated group of individuals who overcame tremendous odds to chase their dreams.
