The newest in the nationally bestselling series--a "fast-paced and absorbing" tale (Midwest Book Review). Ex-lawyer and herb-shop proprietor China Bayles is investigating the mystery of retired Texas Ranger shot dead with his wife's gun...and at the same time trying to sort out some mysteries about her own relationship after she overhears a suspicious phone conversation...

Texas Ranger gone bad.......2004-08-20
China Bayles is back from a retreat at a monastery and is debating with herself about the future of her herb shop. Should she give it up and move on to something else? Should she add a tearoom and hire someone to run it? One thing that becomes clear to her is her devotion to her live-in lover Mike McQuaid, and China is considering making their relationship a permanent one. In the middle of these personal questions, she begins an investigation into the death of former Texas Ranger, Roy Adcock. His death appears to be a suicide, but China thinks it may be murder instead. During the course of her investigation, she begins to have doubts about her relationship with McQuaid, as well as her investigative skills. Adcock's death becomes complicated when it appears that he had a connection with a notorious drug lord, and China goes up a lot of blind alleys before she finally discovers who is guilty in this case. Her private life also ends on an uncertain note and the future of her relationship with McQuaid is up in the air. It appears that readers need to read the next book, to find out how it turns out!
China is a total moron in this book..........2002-06-01
Let me start of by saying China has always been one of my favorite characters. And I would love to have her back in the next installment. This China, the simpering idiot who blames herself when her boyfriend betrays her, is not the strong heroine of previous books. Bring back the real China!!
An unexpected twist!.......2002-05-06
The author sure thew a twist into this one. Back from her haitus at Saint T's convent, China is trying to get back into the swing on things. However, McQuaid is acting different, and China fears he is having an affair. She overhears a phone conversation between McQuaid and a woman and confronts him about it. McQuaid admits it is true, but that it is over. Also, unbeknownst to China, McQuaid is working undercover with the FBI regarding an issue with Texas Rangers. While China is trying to sort out her feelings, McQuaid is shot while working undercover on his case. We never really get to see how China would have worked things out because once she hears that McQuaid has been shot, everything else is immaterial. Not only does she totally forgive McQuaid for his affair, but she befriends the woman with whom he had the affair (an FBI agent). To top it off, she takes responsibility for the affair by saying that if she had said yes to McQuaid one of the many times he had asked her to marry him, he wouldn't have looked elsewhere. No matter how much she loves McQuaid, I have trouble equating this simpering female with the headstrong, independent China from the previous books.
Texan who dunnit.......2001-06-19
This was my first China Bayles mystery...I enjoyed it, reading about China and the town of Pecan Springs was a hoot. Having gardening plans and ideas strewn throughout the book was fun. Being in the legal field, I can relate to the idea of leaving it all behind and running from the city to a quiet remote little town. But somehow I think the town of Pean Springs has a lot more danger lurking around than one would think. China's friends are quirky and add spice to the background. They mystery itself kept me quessing...I will hunt up the previous China stories as well as the more current ones. Great reading for an rainy afternoon or relaxing on the beach...
Not as good as the others.......2001-06-07
I love the China Bayles series, and I usually love China. She's smart, savy and quick-witted. Her quirky friends are half the fun too. This one just didn't do it for me as much as the others. The actual mystery was pretty good. There were a lot of plot twists and underlying issues like all her previous stories, but I had this one figured out by the end. I won't give anything away, but there's something rotten in the Ranger emporium. What I really didn't like, and what seemed unbelievable due to China's previous shows of independence was the fact that she blamed herself for her lover's infidelity! What's going on with That? I certainly hope that Ms. Albert redeems her heroine in the next outing.

A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the “wolf of the steppes.” Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes. Match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults. Rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck.
This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, an informative introduction by a popular author, and a wealth of rare, exciting swashbuckling fiction.
In the concluding volume, gallop into adventure with Khlit and Kirdy for their final challenge in The Wolf Master, out of print since 1933. Then, delve into a treasure trove of stories gleaned from rare magazines: an account of a desperate mission for Khlit’s old friend Ayub; three tales of the valorous Koum and the champion swordsman Gurka; two daring ventures by Stenka Razin, the Robin Hood of the steppes; five short stories of Uncle Yarak, a Cossack fighting in World War II; and more than a half dozen other swashbuckling tales from the steppes.

The only hope for the future is the Society of the Phoenix—a powerful revolutionary group that has sworn to overthrow the Concord. By committing to the ultimate treason and joining forces with his own brother, martyred leader of the Phoenix, Alexand will forfeit more than just his birthright of power.
Customer Reviews:
As good as I remember.......2007-09-06
Meet Alexand and Rich, two sons of Lord Dekoven Woolf. Alexand is the heir, an intelligent, controlled young man undergoing his apprenticeship in politics. Rich is the gentle, brilliant younger brother who becomes fascinated -and deeply involved-with some sociological problems in their society. The brothers are very close, and they face many problems together. The bond between them brings about many of the events that occur throughout the trilogy.
Ignore the cover art. This is a great trilogy that spends time on characters, plot, sociology, politics and religion. The actual science in the science fiction is a bit lacking. So if that will bug you, you might have a problem with some of the issues in the series. Beyond that, the scope is wide, the plot is gripping, the characters are people you care about, and the writing is seamless.
I loved this story as a kid, and it still holds up well under adult scrutiny.
Excellent future History.......2007-04-03
As a life long fan of SiFI and History I rate this book among my favorites along side the Foundation series. I found Vol. 1 at a used book sale and located the rest. Good Character development and realistic plot line based on past history. When I finished the series I was sorry there weren't more.
Fun and suspenseful.......2006-12-20
I recommend this book, but only if you can get hold of all three in the series. This is the first, "Shadow of the Swan" is the second, "House of the Wolf" is the third and final of this "The Phoenix Legacy" series. I would say this is one novel in three installments. In my 1981 edition the second and third books both have maps, previous part synopsis (there are 6 parts altogether), and a cast of characters; the third book also has an extensive glossary. It unfortunately has some pretty lame cover art. You can easily find plot synopsis elsewhere. I want to say that this book nicely combines political intrigue with some hard science fiction and social idealism in the context of a far future feudal society. One plot element involves a pseudo-christian religion, but it is not thematic and there is no supernatural, fantastic, or faith-based action. There's enough action and plot twists to keep you turning the pages, but the real strength of the novel is in the characters and the drama. To my mind, there is nothing particularly profound or inventive about this series, but it is well written and entertaining.
Great Series.......2005-09-27
The Legacy of the Phoenix series is a little soap opera-ish, but the characters grip you, and once you start on the first book you will get sucked in and want to read the next two. I recommend the series full heartedly, though I wouldn't start reading the first one unless I was sure I was able to procure the next two, as once you are hooked on the series you will want to blow through all three books back to back. Not five star, but the series is very close to it, and well worth the read.
Excellent.......2005-04-07
Beautifully crafted. I was delighted to have the opportunity to replace my original extremely battered books. Among science fiction books that examine or explore socio-political structures, these books rank at the top of my list along with the Ender's Game trilogy by Orson Scott Card and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein.

"Claim denied!" All too often millions of veterans have received this response to their legitimate claims for federal benefits. In most cases, writes veterans' advocate John D. Roche, the claimant didn't understand the procedures needed to meet the myriad requirements of the Department of Veterans Affairs. With the appeals process requiring years to resolve disputes, deserving veterans and their dependents are left confused and frustrated by the agency and a system that was created to serve them. The answer is to submit a well-grounded claim initially, which The Veteran's Survival Guide, now in a revised, second edition, analyzes in detail. This unique book, written in an accessible self-help style, will be required reading for any veteran or veteran's dependent who wishes to obtain his or her well-earned benefits and for those officials of veterans' service organizations who assist veterans with their claims.

An Excellent Reference!.......2007-10-08
An excellent source of information written by a former VA claims official. Filing a claim for service-connected disability is not quick, fun or easy, and often requires weeks or even months of careful preparation.
This book clearly explains the process of constructing a well-grounded "bulletproof" claim to get approved the first time around! Lose, and the appeals process can take 3 to 5 years.
Wish they issued a copy to every member upon completing basic training!

Good info, but some of the political BS is tough to take...........2007-09-02
Overall, a pretty good source of information on wading through the bureaucracy of the VA, written by one of the former beurocrats....
The first chapter almost made me send the book back - it was a seemingly incessant attack against the current Bush Administration, and Republicans in general. It turned me off - I get enough of that in the Media everywhere I go every day.....and it's getting very old. The writer is obviously quite partisan, and unfortunately, colors his commentary, and detracts from a lot of good information contained in the book.
Anyone who has dealt with the VA knows the system is a frustrating quagmire and the epitome of a Government Bureaucracy, but it has been broken for a long time....and not just the Republicans are to blame; as this book would have you believe.
If you are a Veteran looking for good info, I highly recommend it.....if you are a CONSERVATIVE former Veteran ....... take you blood pressure medication before you pick it up.
Content: Four Stars, but the political slant detracts from the excellent information the author puts forth.

Very Helpful.......2007-06-09
This Veteran's Manual on "How to File a VA Claim" is helpful when veterans are preparing their VA claim. It covers all the necessary requirement's. If a veteran follows all the suggestions in this manual he/she will have NO problems having thier VA claims' approved.
Good Luck,
John
A necessity for anyone dealing with the VA claims system.......2007-05-21
This is a must have for anyone filing for VA service connected benefits. If you are reading this you probably already know how frustrating it can be dealing with this system. There are rules, laws, standards, etc...that the author clearly explains. He also makes it clear that the VA is NOT going to help you with your claim, regardless of what they say they will do. You must collect certain information supporting your claim and follow a particular process to gain the best results. This book is by the far the best tool for anyone facing this system. Empower yourself with knowledge, don't just go along with what others tell you. Best of luck!
Requesting help for disabilities.......2007-03-09
I have read the book and very impressed. I have ordered 3 copies, 1 for each Service Officer in Chapter #14 Disabled American Veterans. I recommend this book but do not approve of Veterans trying to get information or service connected Disabilities by themselves. Contact a Chapter Service Officer. Since getting the boks the Srvice Officers have been submitting request and getting excellent results for veterans. The book has been very helpful and will be continued to be used. Everything I have read is true.
Remember the Veterans of this great Country. The Disabled, Physically or Mentally, that need help.

Worth every penny.......2007-09-01
This is a very helpful book, and worth every penny (even if you pay full price for it at one of Ms. Harris' seminars!). This is a practical, experienced breeder who has used her knowledge as a human nurse to give breeders an extra edge in helping newborn pups. I've been breeding for 25+ years, and still learned new things at her seminar and from the book. This is a book every breeder should have on their shelf.
A must have .......2007-07-12
This book is one that anyone who has ever whelped, or ever plans on having puppies. It is full of excellent information on taking care of your puppies in any kind of situation. This was written by an author that really knows her stuff!! Easy to read, and easy to understand. Great book!!
A wealth of knowledge.......2007-06-06
This is so jampacked with helpful info and handy hints. Her nursing knowledge is obvious with her laid back approach to things that would generally make even the most experienced breeders nervous. The DVD that accompanies this book is invaluable also. The footage of tube feeding, and rehydrating puppies is second to none. She writes confidently and humerously, and explains quite tricky procedures quite simply. This book will help every breeder. The pictures, being photo's are also extremely helpful.
Wonderful book.......2007-05-13
Fast return and the book was in excellent condition. I would recommend this company to anyone who wants to find a dependable company.
Puppy Intensive Care - A Must for Breeder Libraries...........2007-04-03
This is the best text I have read in 30 years of dog breeding. Informative and written for the lay-man. The accompanying DVD was frosting on the cake. I would recommend this book for all dog breeders, regardless of experience.

Book Description
Very often beautifully engraved designs on glass are spoiled by poor lettering because, though the artist knows how to draw, he does not know the fundamentals of producing good letters. In this book, Charmian Mocatta discusses the basics of lettering, significant properties of glass such as translucence and color, and the techniques such as engraving and sandblasting by which letters can be put on glass. This is a practical handbook which uses the artwork of internationally known glass artists to illustrate the text.

A truly American original, Cookin' Up A Storm is a unique cookbook with quotable comments about life and food. Through this touching story we witness a special relationship that brings new life to timeless, Southern recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Cooking the old fashioned, southern way.......2004-12-01
What a wonderful example of a good, old-fashioned southern country cookbook. You won't find recipes here that start with a cake mix or a loaf of frozen bread dough. Everything is made from scratch the old-fashioned way. The book starts with an introduction to the life of Annie Johnson, the southern black woman to whom this book is dedicated. Throughout the book are scattered various comments from her that help the reader to feel they know her as a cook and a person. If you want to know how to cook traditional southern fare from scratch the way grandma used to make, this is the book to have. No fancy recipe names, no quiche or anything like that, just buttermilk biscuits, yellow cornbread, fried apples, grits, navy beans, black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, sweet potato casserole, potato salad, barbecue ribs, chicken and dumplin's, fried catfish, stuffed green peppers, gingerbread, banana pudding, apple pie and many other traditional recipes. Cookin' Up a Storm, 2nd Edition is a very highly recommended cookbook.
Boring, Boring, and Boring.......2004-08-31
These recipes are very basic. I do not recommend this book to anyone who knows how to boil water. For example, the recipe for Barbecue Pork is as follows... 3 pounds boneless pork shoulder, 1 cup plus 2 cups barbecue sauce (recipe for sauce on page 99).I think we all will agree that you don't have to purchase this book to be able to create this dish. The Blackberry Jam Cake is the only original or interesting recipe in the entire book. If your serious about cooking, let me suggest, "The Black Family Dinner Quilt Cookbook", which can be purchased on this site, and "Big Mama's Back In The Kitchen" by Charlene Johnson (not available on amazon.com). These books have some DELICIOUS and unusal recipes. I'll give a few of my favorites from each book. The following are from "The Black Family Dinner Quilt Cookbook"... Honey-Banana Dressing, Pork Roast Guadeloupe & Rice, Tangy Black Beans & Rice, Liberian Collard Greens, and Banana Oatmeal Cookies. Here a some recipes from "Big Mama's Back In The Kitchen"....Me-OH-MY-OH Crawfish Pie, Southern Jalapeno Hushpuppies, Saucy Pork and Beans, Cream Cheese Pancakes, and the Oven Fried Chicken sounds tame but is wild with flavor.
The most endearing cookbook you'll ever have.......2002-05-17
I have a very extensive collection of cookbooks, they are a passion for me...But I must say that this cookbook impelled me to write a review, this cookbook stole my heart, it has the most endearing story behind it which I feel touches the very heart and soul of why and how this cookbook even came into existence in the first place. It is very warmly written, and has lots of fabulous recipes to be treasured for years to come...such as yellow cornbread, spoonbread, buttermilk pancakes, and biscuits, and corncakes, coffee cake, apple cake, chocolate pound cake, pineapple upsidedown cake, pie crust, apple pie, coconut cream pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, potato salad, barbeque pork, barbeque ribs, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw, split pea soup, stuffed green peppers, chili, meatloaf, baked beans, chicken and dumplin's, fried chicken and gravy, grits, oooh, to name just a few of the wonderful recipes in this book. It makes a perfect gift and truly a book to be treasured in your own collection. I highly recommend this cookbook to everyone!!!
WONDERFUL! Warmly written, great recipes, FANTASTIC!.......2001-11-01
I love this book. It is very warmly and lovingly written about an extraordinary southern black cook/nanny who changed the lives of the family she served. I wanted to cry when I read of Annie's impoverished childhood, having to work instead of going to school (even as a little girl), getting up at 4 AM from the time she was 10 years old in order to fix breakfast so everyone could get to the fields, etc. But she retained a positive attitude and deep faith (which is very humbling). Although I have not yet had a chance to try the recipes, they look wonderful, and many are prefaced by descriptions of why they are so special / taste so good ... down home southern cooking at its very finest. However, IMHO, the book would have been priceless if only for the warm, glowing descriptions of Annie, and recollections in her own words.
In Search of the Lost Domestic.......2000-07-16
Women like Annie have been largely forgotten in our culture now. For most, if their work in life was to have any dignity, they had to provide it as a living example. I also grew up with one of these women. It was a symbiotic relationship between them and our families. The authors have done a great job documenting this work; I enjoyed Annie's parts and wished she had said more! Of course, the traditional recipes of our South are always a pleasure to read, and to cook. A beautiful book, beautifully bound, perfect for a gift.
