Book Description

In 1919, when most women only dream of adventure, Jade del Cameron lives it. After driving an ambulance along the front lines of World War I, she can fire a rifle with deadly precision. Still suffering trauma from the Great War, she sets off for Africa determined to fulfill a man's dying wish...never expecting to become involved in murder.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to read a contemporary book that applauds hunting game so strongly.......2007-09-27

Even though this book is supposed to be about the years just after World War I, it's hard to read about how much fun it is to shoot game to produced mounted heads for wall decoration. Jade doesn't seem to flinch at all about slaughtering animals. I don't think that's anything to admire her for. That was a big mark against the book for me.

4 out of 5 stars The African Savannah and the supernatural.......2007-06-16

I expected "Out of Africa" with a bit of mystery thrown in but I was surprised. I appreciated the period setting. I genuinely felt like I was a British ex-partiot after WWI, although the characters, including the heroine, are somewhat broadly drawn. The supernatural touches of the shape-shifters are what surprised me. I like mysteries with a touch of SF but it seemed out of place here. But most of all, the actual solving of the mystery was not that difficult - I knew half the answer a third of the way into the book. And I rarely guess "whodunnit".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2007-03-06

Mark of the Lion is quite possibly the best debut novel I've ever read, and certainly one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading. Others have summed up the plot quite well, so I won't try and add to that.

What I loved most about the book was its sense of atmosphere. Arruda has a way of writing that makes you feel as though you're there with the characters in Africa. It's rare to encounter a book that can convey its setting so well - from the sense of chaotic settlements (dust! everywhere!) right down to the roaring of the lions in the evening.

Jade is an excellent heroine, as well. I usually avoid historical mysteries because it's hard to find a realistically strong heroine - often historical heroines come off as late 20th century women in disguise. Not so for Jade. She has an excellent reason for her independance and spark.

Arruda is definitely an author to watch, and she has become an auto-buy for me.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful characters, intriguing mystery, great supernatural element.......2006-03-28

Mark of the Lion is a wonderful read. The setting is extremely important in the novel and becomes a character itself because Ms. Arruda has done her research. But luckily the other characters are so well-developed, likeable, and even quirky that they do not get lost in this wonderful setting. And the plot is not typical--Jade is searching for the missing brother of her former love in the middle of witchcraft, greed, wild animals, secrets, and best friends.

I highly recommend this historical mystery novel to anyone--mystery lovers or not. I think anyone who enjoys a good read with exceptional characters will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-03-26

Jade Del Cameron is a terrific new character. I've loved African stories since I was small, and rarely do I find one with such a charming lead female. Jade is able to take care of herself. She's the sort of character that makes you keep turning the pages long after bedtime.

I like the character of Africa, too. Suzanne Arruda brings the area to life. I loved the little chapter headings - the articles that Jade "wrote". They bring added life to the story.

I hope to see lots more of Jade, and of Africa in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-07

Where Captured by the Engines is a horror novel, this is a thriller, as Batman plays Bat and Mouse with an assassin, or more like big ugly nasty rat than mouse.

Specter is an international assassin of spectacular success. No one can catch him. He is hired to deal with an informer who is a key witness at trial to put away a South American crimelord.

The first part of a book deal with some police and FBI politics, and recaps Batman Year One.

The rest is the law enforcement types desperately trying to find this man Specter. Batman kidnaps the witness to keep her safe in the Batcave, and calls for help from people he has saved in the past, taxi drivers, an Asian citizen vigilante group, his sensei, and others.

This allows the good guys to catch a break.

Specter, however, as well as blowing people up to cause chaos is hunting Batman.

This ends in a confrontation, and the female witness is involved.

    Book Description

Known as the father of the new science of positive psychology, Martin E.P. Seligman draws on more than twenty years of clinical research to demonstrate how optimism enchances the quality of life, and how anyone can learn to practice it. Offering many simple techniques, Dr. Seligman explains how to break an “I—give-up” habit, develop a more constructive explanatory style for interpreting your behavior, and experience the benefits of a more positive interior dialogue. These skills can help break up depression, boost your immune system, better develop your potential, and make you happier..

With generous additional advice on how to encourage optimistic behavior at school, at work and in children, Learned Optimism is both profound and practical–and valuable for every phase of life.

    5 out of 5 stars Life-changing material.......2007-09-28

I have read 30 self-psychology/motivational books, and this is by far the best! The author presents an entirely different approach to changing your outlook. He shows the reader how to apply the psychological concepts of Cognitive Therapy to his/her own situation.

Finally, someone who does not just say to blindly be an optimist! He teaches you to become a REALIST, by showing you the tools to realize what a situation really is. Sometimes it's bad, but that does not mean that you are bad, or that it is necessarily your fault. Beliefs are the key to the equation. If you believe that you are the cause of everything bad in your life, or that you are helpless to change your situation, then you will become depressed. He helps you to interupt the equation of Action-Belief-Consequence, and look at it from a fresh, objective standpoint.

The only bad thing I have to say is that the middle of the book is a little dry. That is the area where he is supporting his claims with proven research. This part of the book is important to convince a more cerebral reader, and to separate his fact-based book from the litany books written during this self-help/motivational revolution that are all bells and whistles. So, it does serve a purpose.

    4 out of 5 stars Learned Optimism.......2007-09-26

This book has really changed my way of thinking. It is written so convincing and in such a language, that even a foreigner living in Spain can understand it. For me the book gives a new definition of the expression "if there is a will, there is always a way". Many thanks, André

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about optimism and pessimism.......2007-09-08

This excellent book contrasts pessimism and optimism in a compelling manner. It serves as an excellent eye opener, particularly for the individual with a negative explanatory style who is prone to depression. The book is also invaluable for the unrealistic optimist who believes they will find a parking spot just by thinking about it. Well balanced, well researched, and well presented, this book should be on the bookshelf of every family.

In addition, I unequivocally recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self, a classic book that reveals to the reader the language of the best self. Optimal Thinking empowers you to balance optimism and pessimism with optimal realism (making the most of what is). These books in combination enable you to make the most of your thinking and life.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-06

Great book that changed my life into positive way. Another motivating book that I higly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You

1 out of 5 stars Information From Forty Years Ago.......2007-08-22

I can only assume the readers who raved about this book are young and have never read any basic self-help books before, because virtually everything in this book is at least forty years old. For anyone who has taken Psych 101, seen a therapist, or read anything on positive thinking, this book is of no value whatsoever.

For those who want to save money and time, the author suggests we Look On The Bright Side Of Life except in devastatingly traumatic situations where it might be inappropriate.

    That's it.

If you want to find actual help, track down an old copy of You Can't Afford The Luxury Of A Negative Thought, which is written without rhetoric, with humor, and gives wonderful insights that really do help.

This book is woefully outdated, pedantic, and useless.

    Book Description

    ARE YOU HOLDING YOURSELF BACK?

Without knowing it, most of us impose limits on our achievement and our happiness by approaching life's problems and challenges with unnecessary pessimism. Now, Dr. Martin Seligman, a pioneer in cognitive psychology and motivational research, tells you how to identify your own self-defeating thought patterns -- and how to harness the powers of your conscious mind to break those patterns.

    The Science of Personal Control

Based on years of rigorous research, Learned Optimism examines the importance of "explanatory style" -- the way in which we explain our problems and setbacks to ourselves -- and offers a series of exercises that will help you target unhealthy habits of pessimistic thinking and bring them under your control. More powerful and pragmatic than a simple program of positive thinking, Dr. Seligman's principles of reasoned, flexible optimism will help you:

    * Attain maximum personal achievement
    * Avoid feelings of helplessness and depression
    * Develop a hopeful, healthy outlook

    "A Marvelous Achievement!

Learned Optimism blends hard-edged science with practical advice to give us an understanding of how we hold ourselves back and how we can change for the better."

    -- Dr. Wayne Dyer

I haven't gotten all the way through it, because there are alot of assignments, where you have to stop the CD. I usually listen in my car, so it's taking me a while to finish. I'd recommend buying the book too, which I haven't purchased yet.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new or not obvious here.......2006-07-14

It's not that the information insn't correct, but it certainly isn't insightful. This seems like a mental exercise for a professor who just wants to get his name in print. Right away you're in trouble becuase he has you go through an exercise and then rate your optimism to see if this book could help you. if you are low on optimism, you need this book, if you are balanced, you need this book and if you are very optimistic, you still need this book.

My view, try to see things from others perspective and find out what your unique service and contribution is to a given situation and ulitmaley your whole life. The rest will fall into place.

    5 out of 5 stars Learned Optimism.......2005-02-06

I received this book about a year ago and I think it is the best self help book on the market. It has been fantastic and has helped me so much by giving me scientifically proven techniques to change the way I look at events or situations.

I use to read a few self help books to stay positive and ended up giving them up as I found they never gave me any help and where filled with 'take care of your self, your precious' and `say these nice things to yourself and you will have a better life'. I suppose that is all well and good but at the end of the day it never really helped me or changed anything. They could never snap me out of a downward spiral however the techniques in this book can. This book gave me concrete ways to help myself in situations where I get emotional or upset and it is something that will always need to be worked on but if you do it then it gets easier and you are in more control and you are a more rational and effective person.

The book is easily understood even though alot of it is scientific and best of all the principals are backed up by studies so the book has validation. All of the principals are pretty basic and leave you feeling `well of course' however they really do help and like most books it brings your attention to things you may already know, but may not apply. If you enjoy going to psychologists and raking up all the bad events of your life and leave with no way to help yourself in these emotional times when you are alone, then you may not appreciate this book. While it is great to get help, it is important to get the right help and understand why something may not be helping you. Cognitive therapy seems to put the responsibility back on the individual, while you may not have chosen the way you choose to perceive your life (usually from parents) it is your responsibility to change this and to make the long term commitment to change.

I have also read 2 other books by Martin Seligman and I also found these great. It is not essential to read all of these books but I found Learned Optimism so interesting, and that I got so much out of reading it and using the techniques that I wanted to see what was included in the other two books. The other books hold similar material however go into greater detail in other ways like talking about the angry person and why they are like that etc... I would recommend any of these books to everyone as there is something there for all, it would probably be best though to start with Learned Optimism.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but awful audio version!.......2003-07-26

I received this book several years ago and can say it literally changed my life. It gives great advice on how to deal with habitual pessimism and the free-floating anxiety that often accompanies it. I use the techniques in the book and they really do work. My copy is dog-eared and tattered from lots of use!! Thank you Martin Seligman!!!!!!!!

I cannot recommend the audio version. I got it several years after buying the book, thinking it would be a nice refresher. It was so badly done I was amazed. The abridged version of the book is read in a very boring style and LOTS of minutes are wasted in a detailed explanation of how to do a written self-test. I remember thinking "I can just read the instructions, why are they reading all the instructions out loud?" Horrible.

So definitely BUY the book and benefit from it, but SKIP the tape version.

Martin Seligman, a renowned psychologist and clinical researcher, has been studying optimists and pessimists for 25 years. Pessimists believe that bad events are their fault, will last a long time, and undermine everything. They feel helpless and may sink into depression, which is epidemic today, especially among youths. Optimists, on the other hand, believe that defeat is a temporary setback or a challenge--it doesn't knock them down. "Pessimism is escapable," asserts Seligman, by learning a new set of cognitive skills that will enable you to take charge, resist depression, and make yourself feel better and accomplish more.

About two-thirds of this book is a psychological discussion of pessimism, optimism, learned helplessness (giving up because you feel unable to change things), explanatory style (how you habitually explain to yourself why events happen), and depression, and how these affect success, health, and quality of life. Seligman supports his points with animal research and human cases. He includes tests for you and your child--whose achievement may be related more to his or her level of optimism/pessimism than ability. The final chapters teach the skills of changing from pessimism to optimism, with worksheet pages to guide you and your child. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars shows people can improve their attitudes.......2007-07-03

It is refreshing to read a book like this showing people can change to being more optimistic, rather than all those books out there trying to convince people they have depression and they can't do anything about it but take pills for the rest of their lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Optimism Wins.......2007-02-22

This is a book packed with science yet written in a style that is interesting and easy to understand. Reports of experiment after experiment systematically convince the reader.

Seligman's book describes how the mental attitude of helplessness can be learned and unlearned, how helplessness both results from and exacerbates a pessimistic personality style, and how helplessness/pessimism ends in depression. A test is included so you can find if you are an optimist or a pessimist. A second test reveals if you are suffering from depression. But if you are a pessimist/depressed don't despair. Just as helplessness can be unlearned optimism can be learned and this book tells you how.

Next we learn how optimistic people succeed better at work, school, sports, health, politics, religion and culture.

If I have one criticism of this book it is that Seligman strangely does not provide scientific evidence that his cognitive therapy methods for learning optimism work. Instead he simply writes: "The National Institute of Mental Health has spent millions of dollars testing whether the ... [cognitive] ... therapy works on depression. It does." (p.75). A report of at least one study would have been useful at this critical point.

I have suffered from depression and I found this book provided me with an invaluable technique that work for me. This is one of the very few books that I can say has changed my life.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.......2006-06-01

Over the years, I've read a lot of self-help and psychology books. None has made the difference like "Learned Optimism." I was in the midst of a bad marriage, had lost my career, and wondered how the hell I had ended up in such a lousy life. Seligman's book helped me see (1) how incredibly pessimistic I was, which I hadn't realized, (2) how the expectation of failure had kept me from pursing goals, and (3) how optimism and taking reasonable risks could help. Since that time, I got out of the awful marriage, moved to a new city, found a job I love, and have taken many more risks, most of which have had very happy results. Largely because, from Seligman, I learned how to put optimism to work for me.

Yes, he spends a lot of time on the history of his research. But that's what makes his ideas convincing. If you are a skeptic, this part really makes his case. If there's a single book that will help you get out of your pessimistic rut, this is it. It sure did for me. I am so grateful that Dr. Seligman wrote this book.

1 out of 5 stars Overcome Depression Through Self-Delusion.......2006-03-10

For the most part I consider this book a complete waste of time. The author takes forever to get to the point (which is; How to Change Your Mind and Your Life) and when he finally does, his half baked philosophy is disappointing. He seems to think that self-delusion is the answer to what ails us. If we find something upsetting or that causes us to be depressed, just mentally conjure up an alternative reality for ourself and all will be well. Also, I really don't see the benefit of the author's rather arbitrary categorization of "pessimism" and "optimism" regarding mental self-reflection. Shouldn't the primary focus be cognitive distortion itself? Isn't that the root cause, of mental anguish, which should really be addressed? Just because 'winners' in life are often delusional (as expounded by the author), that doesn't substantiate that delusion is an optimal way to live ones life. What of the long term effect on not only the individual but society itself?

The author's pick and choose method of choosing when to be 'optimistic' or 'pessimistic' regarding events, strikes me as ludicrous, as well as unnecessarily complicating the issue. Why not just focus on a commitment to a rational assessment of the events of one's life? Isn't that in itself difficult enough, without creating artificial divisions, and delusions, in which to view events? If an accurate assessment makes a person feel bad, then that should be an indication that that event is a problem and a solution needs to be pursued. Placing problems into an 'optimistic' frame of reference may make a person feel better but it does nothing to address the underlying problem.

If a person chooses to delude themselves as the author advocates, how is that creating an environment where future change is even possible? Are we to just live in a fantasy world while the troublesome events around us remain unchanged? Shouldn't the core of a persons cognition always strive to adhere to self-honesty as well as an accurate assessment of reality? I don't see how a sane person could think otherwise.

    Obviously, I really didn't get much, that was useful, from this book. The two books I've found helpful and would recommend are;

    * 'The Feeling Good Handbook' by David Burns
    * 'Power Therapy: Maximizing Health Through Self-Efficacy' by Michael Aleksiuk

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-11

This book is wonderful because it explains the strengths and weaknesses of pessimism and optimism in various contexts. There is a simple test so that you can determine where you stand. If you want to understand why optimism is less accurate than pessimism and how optimism can promote good feelings, read this great book.

With four children my twin sister did a lot of cooking while they were all home. On our birthday, I would always give her a cookbook as we both like to "read" cookbooks and cook too. "Nutbread and Nostalgia" was purchased from a small kitchen store in Astoria, OR in 1987. I was having dinner with a friend at a nearby restaurant when I picked this gem of a cookbook out for my sister. I must have stood there for a long time looking at the various recipes (a sign that I am enthralled with the content). When it came to our birthday, I received a copy of the same book from my friend. What a treasure!

This book is filled with sepia toned photographs from the turn of the century and includes menu ideas and recipes of "comfort" food that I am sure you will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in our Family.......2003-11-23

We still have our copy of "Nutbread and Nostalgia" from 1979 - the binding is ripped away, pages are rough on the edges, and my Mom still uses it all the time (she keeps it wrapped with a rubber band to keep it together).
I am SO happy to see that it's still in print - we were going to try to photocopy the entire book and re-bind it, but now I can just purchase a brand new one for my Mom!
There are probably about twelve recipes in here that became family favorites... I look forward to having a new copy for myself as well.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, elegant and delicious!.......1999-08-03

I received this cookbook as a wedding shower gift in 1990. I've tried many of the recipes and have had wonder "feed" back. Now when I go to family get-togethers or company pot-lucks, people ask me to bring certain dishes from this book. I found the recipes to be easy, elegant and delicious. Note: My edition (1989)does not have calorie or nutritional break downs.

      Book Description

Congratulations! You own or are about to own one of the most distinguished breeds of the twentieth century, the American Pit Bull Terrier. Your dog is automatically feared and respected by other people, and it's up to you to be his caretaker and ambassador.

This book will help you do both-and more. In the caretaking department, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you everything you need to know about feeding your dog from puppyhood to old age. It will explain grooming essentials, like trimming toenails, cleaning ears, checking teeth, brushing and bathing. It will describe basic health concerns, from vaccination schedules to flea control to what to do in an emergency.

As for being an ambassador for your breed, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you all sorts of fun facts about the Pit Bull's history so you can boast about your dog and help people understand him for who he really is. Did you know The Little Rascals' devoted companion, Petey, was a Pit Bull? Or that the Pit Bull was the symbol of American strength and courage during World War I? It's true; the Pit Bull was once the all-American dog, a companion cherished for his excellent way with children, his playfulness and his doggy demeanor. In most homes, he still is. But it's also true that today Pit Bulls are associated more with crime than with companionship.

The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier celebrates the breed for the kind of dog it is with the right owners. A dog with physical and mental stature whose intelligence, charm and energy make him a superb friend, fellow athlete and playmate.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading.......2006-05-17

Unlike some reviews I have read. I am not going to criticize this author for what I think she doesn't know or what I think she should have wrote, or how she should have done this or that, or said this or that. To these people I say, when you write a book on the subject and have it published then you can run your mouth.

This book is a must read. People need to know where these dogs come from and what they where bred to do. To fully understand this gladiator among dogs. I believe that to truly have a healthy respect and admiration for this breed you need to read a book like this and others like it, that go more into depth of the history, and such. This book is for light reading, in my opinion a brief introduction into the breed. As well as being filled with advice on training this breed, heath and nutritional needs of dogs in general. I recommend it for people who want to bring a Pit into their life and their home. As with every dog you should research before you get an animal of and type. These are not dogs for everyone. If you can't be a strong leader in the eyes of a lesser dog. Do not bother with a Pit.

This book gives a good idea of what you will be dealing with. Simply put. A very strong, Terrier, which means he'd rather train you. After reading this book I looked at my bully much different and saw him in a new light. Never have I been afraid of him, but never have I had more admiration and respect for him. These dogs are not like the standard poodle next door that retrieved fowl from the water. Their job was to fight for their lives. One which they have excelled at. Every thing about them reflects this. They posses qualities no other dog can touch. No wonder they were chosen as mascot for the U.S. Marines.

I know we can't all agree about whether or not detailed material on "blood sports" bull, bear baiting, and dog fighting should be included in books. Though the presence of this topic does not make the writer Pro- dog fighting. But the fact is, that is what these animals where bred for, it WAS there sole purpose. Dog fighting today is, YES, cruel and inhumane. It NO longer has its place in society. But it hasn't always been that way. It states in this book that in the 1500's Queen Elizabeth herself entertained guests at her court with bull and bear baiting. This is also something many people out there need to come to terms with. In order to have a firm grip on the nature, the personality, and the characteristics of this breed. I feel that this is all information that should be read. By people who are blessed with a bully and those who seek to be blessed, even people who think this breed is a monster. They all need to read these books. Simply by reading this material you can understand what is not an acceptable behavior for this breed. For example...Pit Bulls should not be people aggressive. If the breeders of fighting dogs wouldn't have one on their property that would show aggression toward a person, then why is that what people now expect from these animals. Simple. Stupid people are in possession of dogs with poor, unstable temperaments not necessarily with the intention of ever entering a dogfight are breeding them with dogs of the same quality. Thus producing dogs that shouldn't have been born in the first place. Crating these so-called media monsters.

In conclusion this book brings a wealth of knowledge to the table of anyone willing to be enlightened on this famed, feared and dreadfully misunderstood canine survivor. I urge everyone to read books like this before you bring a Pit into your life. I also hope that instead of supporting the get rich breeders from our local newspapers, who are hurting this breed, consider rescuing one of these wonderful animals. For every 600 Pit Bulls in shelters every day only 1 will find a home. Please help heal the wounds humanity has inflicted on these canine saints.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate APBT Book!.......2005-08-27

Forget the B/W pictures! This is the real ultimate APBT book! if you have any questions about owning a pitbull, this book can answer them all. It also has brief history of pitbulls, not much but if you want a deep history, it won't be fit in just a chapter.
A very useful book, you will open it again... and again... and again!

3 out of 5 stars A Warning About This Book.......2004-01-02

Do not, I repeat, do not purchase this book if you already own "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The American Pit Bull Terrier" or "The Essntial Pit Bull" because you will find that you are only purchasing another edition (with a little bit more information added) of a book you already own. I opened up this book once in Barnes and Noble and was quite supprised to find that I was really reading another book I had sitting at home on my bookshelf!!

However, if you do not own the two books I mentioned go ahead and buy this book. While it is not the best book written on Pit Bulls it is worth a read if you are not too interested in really diving into a deep understanding of the breed. This book is geared toward the pet owner who is more interested in learning how to take care of their dog.

If you really want to bite into an education on American Pit Bull Terriers then read these books: "The Working Pit Bull" by Diane Jessup, "The Truth About The American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Straton, "The World of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "The Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "This is the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Louis B. Colby and Diane Jessup, "The American Pit Bull Terrier Handbook" by Joe Stahlkuppe, "Gladiator Dogs" by Dr. Carl Semencic, and "Fighting Dog Breeds" by Dr. Dieter Fleig

5 out of 5 stars Very Good, Useful and Easy Reading.......2002-02-27

I was doing research about pit bull books and I came up with this one. I found it very useful. Very good info about the origins of the breed, tips on obedience training...and good photos. It has worked a lot for me since I'am a recently pit bull owner. This book was just what I was looking for. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, well balanced book.......2001-04-30

The book does a pretty good job describing the temperment of the breed w/o portraying the dog as an angel, which many of the other books I've seen seem to do. Has some breed-specific training advice as well, not just basic training for someone who's never owned a dog before.

There are more comprehensive books on premiums, but I doubt there are more nostalgic. This might be considered a more focused update of "Jim Harmon's Nostalgia Catalogue," by the same author. The book addresses the shows, in alphabetical order (with cross-references to shows with title changes)twice: once for show descriptions; then to list premiums. Included are show-related premiums from other media (comic books) and stores.

The author makes two points: the book doesn't attempt to be all-encompassing. As the author puts it, "Reading this book will tell you something about the value of premiums, but certainly not everything." He also warns of counterfeits and confusion of items ("...some real items may be misrepresented to be something else.")

Many of the illustrations are monochrome, but there is a section of color photos, too. This is a good complement to other radio-premium books.

            Book Description

The basic problem of polymer physics is obtaining `structure-properties' correlations for their future application for practical purposes. However, these cannot be obtained without the development of a quantitative model of the polymer structure. This problem has been actively investigated during the last 45 years, which resulted in obtaining a great amount of experimental (mostly indirect) proofs of existence of the local order in the polymer amorphous state. Now, the time has come for creating a structural model of polymer basing based on the local order ideas. The cluster model, as presented in this monograph, of the polymer amorphous state structure represents the realization of such attempts. The development of this cluster model is based on well-known experimental observation: the behavior of glassy polymers in the area of stimulated high-elasticity plateau is described in the framework of rubber elasticity concepts. This gives an opportunity to present the local order (cluster) zone as a multifunctional entanglement of the physical network consisting of several collinear closely packed segments of different macromolecules (the amorphous analogue of crystallite with extended chains) and surrounded by a packless matrix. An independent method for assessing local order zone fraction in the structure has been elaborated. Segment length in the cluster equals the length of the chain statistical segment that gives a correlation between molecular and structural parameters of the polymer. Application of the cluster model allowed description and obtaining of analytical `structure-properties' correlations for many processes proceeding in polymers: elasticity, yielding, degradation, transport, some thermodynamic processes, structural relaxation, plasticization, structural stabilization at thermo-oxidative degradation, etc. The relation between the cluster model and some modern physical concepts, for instance fractal analysis, fluctuation free volume kinetic theory, percolation theory, irreversible colloidal aggregation models, are outlined. A separate chapter is devoted to the features of formation and control of the relative part of local order zones in non-crystalline domains of semi-crystalline polymers and their connection to the structure of crystallites.

Walter Sickert (1860-1942), perhaps the most important and influential early modern British artist, completed an outstanding body of prints that have been little noticed until now. This catalogue raisonné brings together for the first time Sickert's 226 prints, many in rare or unique impressions, and discusses the artist's unorthodox techniques, the influences on his work, and the evolution of his printmaking career. Book Description

This remarkable biography, based on much new information, examines the life and times of one of the most prominent African-American intellectuals of the nineteenth century. Born in New York in 1819, Alexander Crummell was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, after being denied admission to Yale University and the Episcopal Seminary on purely racial grounds. In 1853, steeped in the classical tradition and modern political theory, he went to the Republic of Liberia as an Episcopal missionary, but was forced to flee to Sierra Leone in 1872, having barely survived republican Africa's first coup. He accepted a pastorate in Washington, D.C., and in 1897 founded the American Negro Academy, where the influence of his ideology was felt by W.E.B. Du Bois and future progenitors of the Garvey Movement. A pivotal nineteenth-century thinker, Crummell is essential to any understanding of twentieth-century black nationalism.
