I was hooked on the Donovan's after "Amber Beach". After I read "Jade Island" I was ready to walk away. I am so glad I didn't. "Midnight at Rubhy Bayou" takes a little twist away from the ordinary dangers the Donovan family faces by adding a little of the supernatural. It really is a great read.

Very good book higlhy recommend buying it. Dissappointed that shes not writing stories for Justin and Lawe the last two donovan brothers that are twins I might have to boycott buying her books until she comes out with stories for the last two Donovans.

You'll be Reading This One Long After Midnight....It's That Good,Sugar!.......2006-01-17
This is the 4th book in EL's Donovan series, and like the other 3 this is a book that is hard to put down. It has plenty of action and the relationship between Faith Donovan and Owen Walker is developed slowly but tantalizing enough to keep you turning pages to see what will happen next between them. I liked Owen a lot. I don't think it mattered that he was a less educated and a smaller man than the other heros in the first three novels, namely Kyle, Jake, and Archer. He was just as smart, just as intelligent, just as sexy,just as honorable, and just as deadly. It says a hell of lot when Archer Donovan trusts you to take care of his little sister. Archer's trust was not misplaced as we find out in the development of the story as he comes to Faith's aid again and again. One of my most favorite scenes was when he met up with Faith's obnoxious and much larger ex-boyfriend. It was hilarious and very well written.
As far as heroines go, Faith was somewhat lacking when compared with the other Donovans. However, she was intelligent, gifted, and sweet; not quite a hot head as her other siblings. However, I think that rich girl Faith did very well for herself with Owen. A guy that put her needs first, in and out of the bedroom. Cudos to EL for bringing us a heroine who needs a little help in achieving fulfillment in the bedroom. After all, I think that most women do.
Why this one didn't get 5 stars you may ask? Mostly, because I didn't like the way EL ended the love story between Faith and Owen. Owen felt very strongly about being reponsible for others; also, I think that he had some reservations about his much lower socio-economic background. I would have liked EL to take them back home and let us in on some real soul searching for Owen before he came to the conclusion that he was ready for being responsible for a wife and family.The rest of the Donovan guys could have helped him along.It would have been a perfect ending to an otherwise great story.
Exciting and Enjoyable..........................2004-12-25
Had to read this book after reading Pearl Cove and enjoying yummmmmmmmy Archer Donovan and his love Hannah. Faith Donovan the youngest sister and jewelry designer and Owen Walker best friend and Ruby expert goes with Faitn Donovan to the Bayous for her best friends wedding and to present her a beautiful Ruby Necklace. But, the Heart of Midnight a giant ruby is lost and a Russian is trying to find it and murder anyone who gets in his way and Faith may be next. I really enjoyed this one. I would like her to write about their twin brothers and the Emerald trade,but I highly doubt it. Looking forward to reading Color in Death by her and all about Sapphires. Read this book it's highly recommend.

In this Elizabeth Lowell audio cassette trilogy, the first two books were uniformly excellent. Not only intriguing in the ways that one would expect Ms. Lowell's
works to be, but the abridgements and narration enhanced the experience rather than detracted from it. What did mar the experience, however, was a faulty cassette
for Book 3, Eden Burning. Alas, I will never know how the two protagonists found
their love and mutual passion amidst the volcanoes of Hawaii because of a faulty cassette! One only hopes that the 3rd book ended as with as much satisfaction as the first two, BUT I'LL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE THE TAPE WAS DEFECTIVE!

This book was recomened by a wonderful Christian Doctor that I work for. He knew my son was going thru a critical time with his wife and offered to purchase this book for him. I got online and ordered one that night. When it arrived it was the first time my son really got excited about the fact that his marraige could be saved. We orderd another one of the books and had it sent to his wife. Truthfully there are not enough books or people that encourage a person to work hard at saving your marraige. Most will tell you to move on. True, saving a marriage is hard, hard, hard work, but this book helps you see it can be done and there are people out there who are willing to help you achive this goal. People with serious marraige problems have a hugh feeling of failure, and feel the only way to succeed is to move on and divorce. This book helps you see that being successful is finding the strenght and support and making your marriage work again!!!!
This book was the start of saving my relationship.......2007-05-19
There was a point in my relationship where I didn't know what to do, it was near over. A friend recommended reading this book and I got it right away. There are so many proactive suggestions that you can use that actually work. Of course, this isn't the only thing that did save my relationship, but it sure got me onto a great start. I now recommend my friends who are having difficulties to get this book. It's permanent in my personal library.

It is not always possible to prevent a divorce, no matter how much one partner wants to save the marriage. Divorce can be traumatic and life altering, especially to the partner who does not want the marriage to end.
I feel that couples should go to marriage counseling and read this book before filing for divorce, if at all possible. It may not save your marriage, but at least you know you did everything in your power to make your marriage work. Many couples simply give up too soon, not fully understanding the ramifications of divorce.

it is not easy to fix something that is broken, but that is just what this book has helped me do-fix my marriage. it has not been easy, but this book has provided me with a wealth of information, tools, and the confidence, to get back on track. it will not just come to you-it takes work and effort-but it can happen. i have several other of the michelle weiner davis books and i find them to be well written, and not at all vague or hard to understand-just open and honest and sensitive to both parties/spouses. i highly reccomend this book as well as her other titles.

I found this book a little disappointing. There are a lot of recipes in this book that call for vegan cheese. My kids don't like vegan cheese. I'm trying to find more creative recipes that do not depend on meat substitutes. One funny thing, there is actually a recipe for a whole carrot placed on a hot dog bun as a substitute hot dog! That is what people who make fun of vegetarians imagine we are feeding our kids every night! I would recommend "Vegan with a Vegeance" over this book.

For a busy parent wanting to make vegan meals, this book can't be beat. The recipes are ultra quick and easy and the ingredients can be found in most supermarkets. I've tried the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich, Red Lentil Soup, Carrot-Potato Pancakes, Giant Oatmeal Cookies, Sweet Potato Curry, Winter Vegetable Chowder, and Granola. Every recipe worked and my family liked them all.
It's obvious these are real recipes, used by real families. This is not gourmet cooking but practical meals that you can make in a hurry and that your kids will eat.

Don't miss out on this simple vegan cookbook. Even if you have cookbooks lined up in your kitchen this one is a must have! The recipes are simple and the ingredients are common ones that you have in your pantry.
So far I have made Blueberry Tapioca Pudding which is delicately sweetened (I used Agave Nectar) and has the antioxidant power of Blueberry and the creamy tapioca taste to savour. A main dish that you will keep making is the Zuchinni Eggplant Lasagne that is easy and quick to serve family and friends. This is a great dish to get the kids to eat their veggies! For desert the vegan butter tarts are the best and putting them on a tray with the chocolate peanut butter dipped pretzels with simply WOW your famiy again! Pippa Funnell - the autobiography
The equestrian sport of eventing has experienced a great deal of scrutiny, tragedy and change in the past decade. Though much discussion over the past three years has been of the new format changes, the most uncontested feel-good story in the community has been that of Pippa Funnell. Thankfully, Pippa found the time through a very busy 2004 to record some of the details of her journey.
Remarkably, she tells the story of her life to this moment in time (21 August 2004 -- such that the book could be launched at Burghley) in such a way that it is not just a summary of happenings. She draws you into to her horse crazed youth. She describes the pains of pursuing the life of an athlete - one where both parents are not always pleased with your decisions. She describes the sacrifices - particularly as they relate to family - that are implicit in the life of one seeking to be the best in the world. She details each event in the book with great success. Information is supplied for the reason of understanding - no more, no less, and we are then able to follow the story-line as it unfolds. She displays the uncanny ability to transmit the feeling of her `nerves' into her written text. Fortunately, there is no tidy epilogue - and this is most suitable as her story continues.
Her account of the equestrian details is most satisfying. She expounds on her development as a rider - both physically and mentally/emotionally. Her insight in to her cross country riding and balance should be duly noted by many. Through her account of her work with Nicky Heath, we all learn of the importance of the mental game. And of course, she tells her tale in a fashion that pays highest respect to the horses that have made her successes possible.
When we finish her story, we feel satisfied that she has really `left no stone unturned.' We get the sense that things will never truly go `belly up' for Pippa Funnell ever again. Go ahead, read this book, and then shower your horse with praise.

Percy W BLANDFORD: Practical Blacksmithing and Metalworking.......2002-01-07
As a beginner blacksmith with a professional engineering background I bought previously Alexander G Weygers: "The Complete Modern Blacksmith" largely because it had many "excellent" reviews. However, Blandford wins on most points. I have found Blandford very helpful on specific details, on leading me through principles and methods, with much clearer illustations properly referenced in the text, and with a wider scope of nedded information. In contrast Blandford has much better information on welding, and detail on forges and on aprons and is far better indexed. I have learned a lot from both books, but if I had to choose one it would be Blandford.
General Introduction...Worth Owning.......2000-01-14
Percy Blandford writes on a lot of shop craft topics and has clearly thought about them a lot. He writes well. This is a general introduction to metalwork primarily from a smithing perspective...that is, carbon steel work. It touches on other areas but really isn't suitable to the beginning welder, sheetmetal worker, or tool and die hobbiest. It would be best for the person who wants to make historic replica items from a forge who one who wishes to supplement historical replica woodworking with some basic metal work in brass or iron/steel.

Interesting read title does not clearly depict the nature of the book. The title makes it seem as a dark story of an african american family in the south. The book chronicles the struggle and racism that faced by this family and many families during the civil war time period.
Engrossing narrative.......2003-07-20
This book caught me so well, that even though I left my original copy on an airplane, I had to get another copy! In this book, I found it much more than just about the Harleston family. There was so much in there about the history of Charleston, the beginnings of Jazz and Blues, and the the transformation of the South in the late 1800's and 1900's.
There was a lot to like about this book: the style, the pace, the depth of the family history, as well as the way the events were placed in the course of what was happening at the time. I particularly enjoyed the information related to the music and art of the time.
This is a tremendous book, and a great read. While I realize it could have been about 100-200 more pages, I would have liked to know more about the life of Edwina during her adult years. While she was one of the few members of the her family still alive in the mid-1900's, it seems the meat of the book ended in the 1930's.
A highly recommended book, a sure one to keep around...and pass around!

1/29/03 After scanning through the many pages of illustrations and photographs and portraits of the Harleston family ,I found the book even more intriguing by going to the 'Notes'(pgs 353-371) and the Index(Pgs 375-384) and follwing through on the events in the lives of certain of the Harlestons(e.g.):Eloise"Ella" Harleston and Edwin A."Teddy" Harleston.

Edward Ball did a wonderful job with this book. The story is well written and very informative. I am of Creole Heritage and I found the book to be similiar to my ancestery.
An unforgettable story..........2004-03-18
Author Edward Ball comes from a long line of plantation owners from the Low Country of South Carolina. In his first book, National Book Award-winner Slaves in the Family, Ball set out to trace the ancestors of slaves once owned by the Ball family. Little did he realize that this research would lead to the discovery of his own ancestors of color, and what a fascinating tale this would be. This story is the basis of his second book, The Sweet Hell Inside, which is one of the most moving, poignant and haunting books I have ever read.
The Sweet Hell begins with plantation owner, William Harleston. Harleston never married, but took a house slave named Kate as his common-law wife. Together, they produced eight children. After the Civil War, William purchased a house in Charleston for Kate and the children, and even left her an inheritance when he died (something rare in the 19th century South). The story of the Harleston family is a study of Charleston's high yellow society, or the black elite. Not accepted into white culture, they were also not comfortable among their freed slave brethren. Ball follows four generations of the black Harlestons. We see that they were educated, sent to college, trained in various professions, and lived a very comfortable life. The members of this family were also multi-talented. They became businessmen, sea captains, artists, musicians, pastors, photographers, and influential members of Charleston's black society.
Much of the success of the Harleston family begins with Kate and William's son, Edwin. Edwin started the Harleston Funeral Home to provide upper-class black families with the same services offered by white undertakers (who would not handle black clients). The short history that Ball provides about the mortuary business is fascinating. Several other family members stand out in this book. Edwin's son, Teddy, becomes a classically trained painter. Unfortunately, he is needed in the funeral business and his painting career suffers. Edwin's daughter, Ella, marries the Rev. Joseph Jenkins. Together, they run the famous Jenkins Orphanage. There are a host of other brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews that make-up the tapestry of this wonderful story.
But for as fortunate as this family was, they also suffered more than their share of heartaches including infertility, economic setbacks, illness, and early death. They also faced discrimination in their hometown. A musician moved to Europe to earn the respect he deserved as a performer and composer. Teddy had to travel north to enjoy classic artwork in museums (Charleston's museums were for whites only). Also, his own city never recognized his artistic talents until after his death. Pneumonia, heart disease, a ruptured appendix and TB were among the maladies that cut down family members in their prime.
The Sweet Hell was a book I didn't want to end. There is a family tree and many photos of family, places and even Teddy's artwork. But I wanted more. So on a trip to Charleston, I visited many of the places mentioned in the book. First, I rode by Kate Harleston's house (the original homestead). Since the book was published, this dilapidated house is now being renovated. I discovered that I have passed the Harleston Funeral Home hundreds of times, but never noticed it before. It is still in operation, although no longer run by the Harleston family. I found the Plymouth Congregational Church, where most of the Harleston's worshipped. The most moving sight was the old Jenkins Orphanage. The orphanage and the Old Jail both share a block. It was eerie walking in this now quiet, residential neighborhood, trying to imagine what it must have been like when hundreds of orphans and hundreds of inmates were both in residence. Add a Jenkins band or two, and it must have been a happening place!
All in all, I just can't say enough good things about The Sweet Hell Inside. Edward Ball's new effort proves that he is a writer with an incredible voice.
Powerful Story.......2003-05-01
As a genealogist researching my ancestors from South Carolina I felt compelled to read this book. It was fascinating, although I had read Slaves in the Family, I felt like this was a continuation not to be missed. I felt deeply for the members of the Hairston family. It was sad see how Kate lost her inheritance which she deserved. All of the other slights the family is dealt but still some how the family went on. Its an important aspect of American history which you don't always see.
Amazing Once Again.......2002-08-21
I was dazzled once again by the depth and scope of effort and research put into a book by Edward Ball. I was such a big fan of his first book, Slaves In the Family, I was doubtful he could equal his own work. What a nice to surprise to find that as good as Slaves In the Family was, The Sweet Hell Inside was even better.
The book follows generations of the Harleston family of South Carolina from the early 1800s to the present. Harleston was a white ancestor of the author who took a black common law wife with whom he had five children. Being of mixed blood the Harleston family lived a separate, more priviledged life than other black South Carolina residents, but one that was also very separate from the white residents. The family history is fascinating with members working in various performing and visual arts, participating in the Harlem Reniassiance, and educating some children who would grow up to be pioneers in jazz music. Its astounding that one family could have had such an influence in so many areas and that they have the documentation to prove it. Much of the documentation and oral history come from Edwina Harleston Whitlock a direct descendant of white Mr. Harleston and his former slave/wife Katie. The compilation of material provided from Ms. Whitlock coupled with Ball's narrative talent make this a must read.
Illuminating one family's history in Black America.......2002-01-01
I found "The Sweet Hell Inside" to be an illuminating, informative read! Being an African-American especially interested in the black/white dynamics of American history, I found Edward Ball's story of the Harlestons of South Carolina hard to put down!
The in-depth story of how the black Harleston family began, prospered, endured, and survived;the digressions Ball made re African-American parts in jazz, art, the funeral-home industry;the "Harlem Renaissance";and the very human traits of all the various characters, combined to make "The Sweet Hell Inside" a voyage of discovery and enlightenment for me. I think most other readers will find it likewise! This book is a treasure-trove of family, racial, and American history.
I especially liked this book because the author allowed the characters to "speak" through their papers, records, and other memorabilia, and via his sixth cousin,Edwina Harleston Whitlock!
