Book Description
Tony Valentine made his living and his name as a cop in Atlantic City–and is now known worldwide for his ability to spot the kinds of scams, grifts, and rip-offs that cost casinos billions every year. A man with a biting wit who drives a ’92 Honda, Tony is low-profile, old-school, and has seen it all–until he meets the luckiest man on earth.
Ricky Smith was once a small-town loser. Then he went to Las Vegas, jumped out the window of a burning hotel, lived to tell the tale, and tore up the Strip on an incredible winning streak. Ricky didn’t just win at one slot machine or table game. He won at blackjack, roulette, and craps, and then beat the pants off the world’s greatest poker player. Tony knows that goofy, loudmouthed Ricky Smith–or anyone else, for that matter–couldn’t possibly be that fortunate. But when “Mr. Lucky” returns home to the little town of Slippery Rock, North Carolina, he keeps on winning everything from a horse race to a $50,000 lottery.
Hired by a desperate casino, Tony starts to pry into Ricky’s past, his friends, and the strange little town that is benefiting from Ricky’s fame and fortune. Unfortunately for Tony, his cover is blown when he is forced to reveal a trick he has up his own sleeve: a pocket Glock he can shoot with laser-like precision. Suddenly, two men are dead, the cops are on Tony’s tail, and the investigation explodes in violence–putting the lives of Tony’s son and his young family in danger.
For years, Tony’s son Gerry has dueled with his own criminal impulses. Now, the Ricky Smith case has lured Gerry through the gates of temptation and into a murderous confrontation with the Dixie Mafia. With Tony stuck on the slippery slope of Slippery Rock and Gerry fighting for his life, the Valentines are finding out just how bad good luck can get.
Against a neon-tinted backdrop of adrenaline rushes, hard crashes, big money, and high-wire tension, the inimitable James Swain has set his best Tony Valentine novel yet: a funny, furious ride with an astounding array of crooks, marks, and one killer scam.

Swain Always Entertains.......2007-09-18
For pure reading entertainment, it's hard to beat anything in the Tony Valentine series by James Swain. The plot lines are simple and the supporting characters are often a little over the top. But, boy, does Swain ever make it work. In addition to a writing style that is thoroughly enjoyable, Swain's descriptions of various scams add a unique quality that takes an already wonderful story to the next level.
In Mr. Lucky, Tony and Mabel stand out as always. Tony has such a real quality to him, it's easy to forget that he's fictional. While all of the works in the series are highly entertaining, what makes Mr. Lucky even more complete is the development of Tony's son, Gerry, as a character. Gerry's contributions to the story have been building over the last couple of books, and with Mr. Lucky, he finally arrives as a quality main character.
Ricky Smith provides a worthy protagonist for Tony, all the while maintaining a surprising likeability. You want to see him go down, but not necessarily because of who he is or what he's done, but because we want and expect Tony to get to the bottom of things.
Well done, as always, Mr. Swain. I look forward to the next story in the series.
One of HIs Best!.......2006-06-29
Swain's Tony Valentine's books are great summer reads, and although I have not read all of them, they are mostly enjoyable.
I like the gambling atmosphere of Casinos (though I hardly gamble myself), as well as learning about all the types of con games that exhist and these contribute to my enjoyment of Swain's works.
The author will throw in a lot of his knowlege of cheating, and why gambling is a loosing proposition, so reading one of these books acutally lets me feel like I've had some casino fun, without losing any money!
Mr. Lucky is one of the best of his books I have read for a couple of reasons. The first is the relationship between Tony Valentine and his son. In this story the son begins to come around and make better choices in his life, so the reader gets to root for him, but also get taken through the drama of his struggles.
Another reason for my claiming this is one of Swain's best is that I did not have to suspend belief to a ridiculous degree. One has to do this in any modern day mystery - granted - but I did not have to read about "little people" (aka midgets) hiding in speakers playing music for musicians who were faking it on stage, or about eukalale playing monkeys that can read your mind and play the song you are thinking of. No, this story was quite believable in comparison and that is a huge plus!
Excellent read.......2006-05-20
I'm a bit confused by Jackson Pillar's 1 star review. You refer to it as a "poor read", but that you had purchased the audio book. How could you read it, then? You go on further to state it was a "quick read." An audio book is not a quick read unless you fast forward it, and then you miss parts, I assume. The nastiness of this firsttime review of yours suggests to me something more personal is going on here, but it's irrelevant. People with any intelligence know that the "bible" of book reviews is The New York Times Book Review, and out of 6 novels, Swain has had five reviewed there, all favorably.
Here's the one for Mr. Lucky:
THE ARTS/CULTURAL DESK
By JANET MASLIN (NYT)
Published: March 10, 2005
MR. LUCKY by James Swain (Ballantine Books, $19.95): In this series about gambling, the main character is a big winner. Mr. Swain's likable detective hero is Tony Valentine, an expert on casino cheating. Tony has seen it all -- he knows why crooks use old people with hearing aids as decoys, for instance -- and he has some neat tricks up his sleeve. This time Tony tracks a guy whose luck in Las Vegas has been inexplicable -- and Tony wants an explanation. Slippery Rock, N.C., provides local color.
Poorly written, Poorly read.......2005-10-26
This is my first review mainly because it's the only one where I found my perspective to be dramatically different than the other reviewers. I bought the audio version based on the reviews I read on line and was looking forward to reading a new author. What I found is a book that is full of cliches and choppy dialogue. Although it's a very quick read I found myself frustrated with the ridiculous dialogue and characters that failed to keep my interest. I must confess that I did find myself laughing out loud at some of the very bad cliches. I will qualify my review by stating that this was an audiobook and I found the reader to be very poor, using accents for different characters that were wildly exaggerated. It could be the reader's characterization that amplified the poor writing. Needless to say I will not be reading any other Swain books.
The reader wins.......2005-09-22
Sometimes a book will sit for a while before it gets read. Others appear more appealing. I won't make that mistake again. The author manages to teach you something each book, and that makes it valuable. A good puzzle, interesting characters, and the pages turn quickly.

Beautiful, haunting, and sad........2005-11-22
Though I liked this book, I'm going to have to agree with the reviewers who called it depressing. It's a very melancholy book, moving from one heartbreaking situation to another with no respite.
The story starts with two stories intertwined: first, Evelyn's wild, rough-and-tumble childhood and her youthful escapades with a faun in the Alaska forest, and second, an older, tamer Evelyn's marriage, which is on the rocks after she, her husband, and their son move in with the husband's family. His family is horrible in ways that are devastatingly realistic. I know people like Tom's folks. Unfortunately.
Evelyn, at first, tries to fit in with the in-laws, but it soon becomes apparent that she never will. Then she begins to see her faun again. Some very bad things happen, and Evelyn faces difficult decisions. I'll say no more for fear of spoilers, but there is no choice in this novel that does not lead to heartbreak. So, yeah, this is a very sad story. It's also good, though, and does a great job of integrating mythology and animal nature and human nature.
Brilliant, magical, enlightening.......2002-07-12
Megan Lindholm taps the root of teen angst and the pain of being different while struggling against societal norms for a young woman. Her prose and timing are brilliant and the enlightenment almost heart breaking. Her characters shine with life. She employs a technique of jumping back and forth between young woman/mother and child teen from chapter to chapter. I've rarely seen this used successfully, but Lindholm makes it seem ideal.
Even as a man, I felt and perhaps began to understand the agony a teenage girl/young woman can feel when she refuses to or can't "fit in". The character of Pan just feels right and adds to the magic of childhood, motherhood, and the struggle for independent thought. The story would have worked well even without the mythic side turning out to be "real", but throughout is original and uncontrived.
Only someone who refuses to read literature that asks us to grow and insists on only cheery stories could fail to see the brilliance of Cloven Hooves. From beginning to end it is unique, balanced, and extraordinary. I recommend it at the highest level.
Poignant and Distressing.......2001-09-02
I would recommend this book; I have never forgetten it, but I will never read it again, it is so sad. It is well written, like all of her books: I would say it is about reality and fantasy, and reality loses. My favorite book of Lindholm's is Wizard of the Pigeons. Thank you Amazon: I didn't know she was Robin Hobb and learned it from a review. The reviews on Amazon are a delight. Love.
Where's the happy ending?.......2000-12-11
All right, all romances don't have to have happy endings. But 'Cloven Hooves' goes beyond 'not happy' into 'downright miserable'. Everything goes wrong with the main character: she doesn't fit in as a child; when she finally grows up and has a family of her own, her inlaws despise her, and her son is killed in a farm accident. And despite what looks like a happy occurrence -- her childhood friend, a faun/satyr, comes back into her life -- that's doomed to misery as well.
I simply can't recommend this book, unless a reader likes to see a character always unhappy.
Wonderful, magical, poignant........1997-12-09
Megan Lindholm writes a moving story about a misfit, a woman who feels more comfortable in the wilderness of the cold north than with other humans, who loses her son in a tragic accident and her husband in its destructive wake, and who retreats to the forest with a childhood friend -- a faun.
If you like "crossover fantasy" where the present day reality mixes seamlessly with other realms, you'll enjoy this and her earlier book "Wizard of the Pigeons." Also highly recommended is her Farseer series (beginning with "Assassin's Apprentice"), under the pen name of Robin Hobb.
Book Description
A groundbreaking, proven approach for successfully dia--gnosing and treating the mil-lions with hypothyroidism. Depression, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, hair loss-these are just some of the vague, often debilitating symptoms that plaguethe more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. The typical blood test for diagnosis is often inaccurate, leaving many to suffer through ineffective treatment. But now, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. This individualized program uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not only lab results. It then treats patients of all ages with the safe but little used T3 hormone in combination with the more common T4 hormone. Also including specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments, this is the one program for sufferers of hypothyrodism that really works!

Depression, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance, slowed reflexes, hair loss, menstrual abnormalities—these are some of the vague, sometimes debilitating symptoms that, in varying combinations, plague more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, many patients with hypothyroidism go for months to years, from doctor to doctor, from test to tests without being properly diagnosed. This is because the TSH blood test, considered the gold standard for diagnosis, is simply not an accurate indicator of hypothryoidism. Perhaps more perplexing, millions who are properly diagnosed find themselves undergoing often ineffective treatments for their disorder. At last, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking treatment program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. It's an individualized program that uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not lab results, and treats patients of all ages with the safe, but little used T3 hormone in the best combination with the more common T4 hormone, as well as with specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments that really work!

Missing Some Important Information.......2007-09-10
Dr. Blanchard has some good ideas about how to balance T4 and T3, but the book was
lacking information I had hoped it would contain. The human thyroid actually produces
10% T3, and 90% T4 -- so I'm not quite sure why Dr. Blanchard arrived at the 2%
solution -- perhaps most of his patients still have functioning thyroids, but functioning
at a lower than normal level.
There is almost no discussion of patients who have NON-functioning
thyroid glands, thyroidectomies, or myxedema. As a patient with a non-functioning
thyroid, and also having experienced myxedema due to lack of adequate medication, I found
this book was not very useful. There was no discussion of a full physiological replacement
dosage. I am unfortunately familiar with the symptoms of myxedema, and aware than incompetent
physicians are capable of inducing myxedema in a severely hypothyroid patient by relying on the
TSH test and underdosing the patient.
Also, I would like to have seen more discussion on the MANY types of thyroid
antibodies, and how these can affect the type of medication and dosage a
patient needs to feel well. I would also like to have read a discussion on why
some people need a higher than normal dosage to feel well -- due to poor stomach
absorption, thyroid resistance, anemia, etc. For reasons not well understood, other individuals
do not adequately convert T4 to T3 in their bodies; thus they require high amounts
of T3. There was no discussion on this point, either.
Something I had expected in the book (from other reviews) was a discussion of the physical
symptoms of inadequate or excessive T4, and T3 levels. Instead, the reader was
referred to the blood test again.
So for those patients with severe hypothyroidism, or non-functioning glands, you're still
on your own to figure out the best treatment regimen. The 2% T3 plan is
just too simple, and this book offers no explanation of what a full physiological
replacement dosage should be.
Great Resource.......2007-09-03
Geared toward helping you get the most out of your thyroid treatment. Best for people already diagnosed.
Balancing T3 and T4.......2007-06-04
This book is quite good, really focuses on learning to balance T3/T4 not only with lab tests but also based on how you FEEL regardless of what the labs say. Very interesting read.
Another great book for Thyroid.......2007-05-09
Read this along with Mary Shomons book and you are on your way to learning what you need to know to manage your thyroid disease. I was shocked at what I didn't know after being ill for years. Read it, re-read it and memorize it. Then ask your dr. questions. You can control your disease and symptoms if you have the knowledge needed.
Outstanding.......2007-02-15
I just what to say thanks for writing the book. I learned a lot about hypothroidism. I'v had it for 10 years. I never new about T3 free. Now I have read more books on thryroid problems. This one is the best. It really tells it like it is. Great information, and what you need to do to get better. All I can say is just read it you will be surprised.

Great for any cook or cook wanna-be.......2003-10-05
Most people are a bit timid about trying new spices or blends in their cooking. The great thing about this book is that it gives you not only the directions to make your own blend (thus saving you lots of money!) but suggestions on how and when to use them. This is a must have for the timid cook to those that experiment with their own blends! It gives great suggestions and has a wonderful variety.
Great Ideas for You and to Give.......2002-12-29
I have only really looked through this book, but I am already very excited to own it. Tonight I made the Pumpkin Pie Nut Mix and it was fantastic. I can't wait to try the other spice blends in the book. This would be great for the person who loves to cook and experiment in the kitchen.
Herb Mixtures and Spicy Blends.......2000-06-29
While mainly a book of recipes of blends, the Introduction also contains good information on drying your own fresh herbs, seeds, and freezing fresh herb; as well as helpful information on storing herb mixtures. An added bonus is are helpful suggestions on packaging blends for gifts. There are recipes for appetizers, butters, dressings, no-salt blends, meat, seafood, traditional blends such as Italian, Pumpkin pie spice, bread and dessert blends; and some "not so traditional" such as "Wassail Spice Mix", for a punch. I especially like this book because after each formula there are suggested uses and a recipe using the blend. Each page also has a little history about where the blend comes from. Good Book!
Book Description
Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More
Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier -- and healthier -- with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.
That's why Rudy Edalati cooked up
Barker's Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch -- and you'll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie's Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach
Barker's Grub is informative (there's lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick -- after all, it's not just about health and longevity, it's about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

excellent book.......2007-09-09
this is a great book, it gives you excellent supplements, and nutritional information. i recommended it to my vet. thanks.
Great book.......2007-08-27
Easy to read, all recipes very "do-able", for a non- gourmet chef, but a pet owner who wishes to feed their pets good food.
Not as good as others about the same subject.......2007-06-09
I guess I wanted my scientific and nutritional knowledge in a dog recipe book. This book is just too joky, with no real facts to back anything up.
Why should my dogs eat better than I do?.......2007-06-01
Seriously, this book gives quite a bit of nutritional information, but it seems that the recipes are overly done for the person who just wants to give his dogs an alternative to commercial food. I find the thought of cooking a rather complicated recipe each day (or week) to be daunting. Also, though my dogs are usually anything but finicky, they have turned up their noses at several of the offerings.
Barkers Grub book made my dog happy!.......2007-05-28
I was amazed to learn that commercial pet food products are a recent happening in this country which came about in the early 1900's. Prior to that, people fed their dogs what they ate. Due to the latest scare of pet food recall I tried the recommendations found in this book, starting my dog on the road to better nutrition. At first I was skeptical but now I can't say enough about this book. My dog's coat is shiny, her stools are small, she looks great. Best of all she eats EVERYTHING I put in front of her. With commercial dog foods, there was always something left in her bowl. She doesn't have any flatuence which is amazing. I thought she wouldn't eat the vegetables that were recommended, but VOILA!, she eats the vegetables, too. I did have some rough periods where during the transition from commercial pet food to natural food, there were bouts of diarrhea which the book said would happen. But I pressed on and now that the transition period is over, the diarrhea has stopped completely. Yes, the task at first is daunting trying to cook for your pet but anything new that we start out with does take some effort but it is well worth it. I cook for an entire month then store the food in plastic containers in the freezer. I take them out as needed. I wish I knew about this book when I got her as a puppy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their pets! Good health and long life to our pets!

one of the best.......2007-06-10
this is one of the three best books out there on canine nutrition and a must have for anyone who is serious about cooking for their dogs or even just buying commercial brands. be sure to add this to your collection.
Must know information.......2007-03-08
This book is packed full of must know informatiion for today's dog owners. I have been a dog owner as long as I can remember, my parents breed collies. It seems though dogs have more health issues now. This book was very user friendly and informative. My current dogs seems to have more issues than any before him. This book has given me information to get him healthy and keep him healthy. Thank you thank you
Not quite what I was expecting.......2007-02-19
Overall, the book gives a good review of vitamins, minerals, etc and what roles they play in the body. I was looking for the recipes mostly but found them a bit weird, honestly. Psyllium husks were used in every recipe "for fiber." I prefer the recipes by Dr. Strombeck in his pet recipe book.
All the information you need to feed your dog.......2003-12-22
I have been making home-made diets for my dogs for years and have several books on nutrition but this book is the one I always reach for first! It is easy to understand yet has lots of detailed information on nutrient requirements and recipes, along with chapters on diets for medical conditions and nutritional supplementation for diseases.
My copy is dogeared and highlighted and has lots of scraps of paper sticking out of the pages. It will take you a long time to out-grow this book.

Excellent refference book.......2005-10-16
I found this book to be filled with information on the nutritional needs of both cats and dogs. As A pet owner I always read the pet food lables. Till I read this book I was unaware of how misleading those lables can be. I have come away from this book with a much better understanding of the nutritional needs of my pets and how to feed them to promote health and longevity. I also have gained some insight into how to spot signs of nutritional deficiencies in my pets. Surpisingly two of the writers of this book appear to work for Iams, a rather large and well known pet food company. This book was far from biased for the pet food industry nor did it appear to promote any pet food. This book has changed my view of the pet food industry and I will be be much more cautious in the future. I am revamping my pets' diets today! I feel this book is a must for anyone who owns a cat or a dog.
Written by the pet food industry.......2005-08-18
This book was profoundly disappointing. I expected information on feeding my animals food "fit for human consumption" and from my kitchen (versus store bought). I realized shortly into the book that it was written by experts at Iams Company, a maker of pet food. Their recommendations are based on meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines - a committee developed by the pet food industry when they decided they did not care for the requirements recommended by the Committee of Animal Nutrition of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Science.
I did get one good tip from the book on how to clean my kitchen after working with raw meat. Otherwise, there are much better books out there for people looking for healthier pets through the food system.

Canine Nutrition revised.......2006-02-26
Incredibly helpful book!
This book is an excellent guideline to feed by breed!
All breeds have different nutritional requirements based on body type, occupation, and origin. This book shows what types of grains, meats and vegetation are best for each breed in addition to going over general nutritional information re: vitamins & minerals, protiens, carbohydrates, fatty acids, how & when to supplement, etc.
As an animal behaviorist and canine/feline clinical nutritionist I found this book to be an excellent tool and valuable part of my canine library.
Claims based on facts taken out of context.......2003-11-15
If you compare his claims against the actual sources of his "research", you will find that much of it is completely taken out of context in order to support the point he is trying to make.
Lots of hype and no real facts. Outdated research.
An excellent reference source; not a junk food review!.......2002-11-09
After reading this book I personally spoke with the author to get more detail. This purpose of this book is to make public the scientific results of the food trials and research in question. It is not a how-to book that spoon feeds you information and preconceived notions. Dr. Cusick is addressing the causes of allergies and incompatiblities in the different ingredients that are given to each dog. The whole point is that there is NO one commercial food for all dogs. The information in this book is the result of many years of research and testing on all breeds. The topic of nutrition is so big that one book can not cover it all. Good nutrition is not simple. I was largely ignorant about commercially prepared foods before reading this book. I didn't know that corn and dried beet pulp are two of the worst allergens that are routinely put into prepackaged foods. There is only one commercial food that I know of that doesn't contain corn and that one brand only comes in one flavor so it is not best for all dogs. The author is trying to get the point across that each dog needs a specific meat (such as beef or venison) and while some may be allergic to certain foods, others may not be. The whole point is that not only do English breeds eat differently that Asian breeds or Wolfdogs, but even within a breed, the diet must be specialized. While I am a proponent of feeding organic pure foods across the board, preferably home made diets, that is not the subject of this book. Once one understands that commercial foods are not only junk food but they are also not customized, then one will stop looking for someone to write a book reviewing dog food brands. That is like looking for some to write a book on fast food restaurants and to say which is the healthiest. None of them are!!! That is an uninformed expectation. One needs to use this book as a reference, go to your local free-range meat butcher (usually at a health food store) and buy the ingredients listed for your breed. This is a book for those who know how to cook and who know how to use forums to learn the basics of cooking for a dog, including safe food handling procedure. Dr. Cusick is not trying to bias his work by giving plugs to the dog food industry. He is trying to say you have to custom prepare food for each dog. It is up to the reader to have the intuition to proceed further in their research.
Interesting reading.......1999-12-26
Since the author's focus is on home prepared diets, I didn't expect to be guided through the processed food choices. While the book does not give recipes for home cooking, it is interesting to note the authors descriptions of variances in foods between breeds. The point of one generic diet being optimal for any dog ( as processed food companies would have us believe ) is shattered here. I tried to come up with recipes for my dog that included foods the author suggests and eliminated the items that would theoretically offend. What I discovered is that my dog is an individual and does not follow the mold in this book. But after reading this material, I found a dog dietician on the net and this became my dog's saving grace. I doubt I would ever have considered this without reading this book.
What a disapointment........1999-09-02
I thought this book would give list of what foods to feed your dog. I also thought that food brands would be listed and what was best for your dog would be covered. Neither were. There is a small section at the begining on vitamins, meats, etc and then about 10 sentences per dog breed for the remainder of the book. Too little information for my taste. This book did not tell me anything about what to feed my dog.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Miniature Mannequins.......2001-04-09
I've been collecting dolls for a few years and just recently started to collect the miniature sewing mannequins. I found this book to be extremely helpful with pricing and what to look for. Great pictures too.
Book Description
Complete prototype descriptions and modeling tips will help any modeler explore this dynamic trend. Railroads, both prototype and model, have witnessed a dramatic revolution in the way they carry freight. The expansive 53-foot trailers and uniform containerized loads that now ride the rails are the result of changes that began in the late 1800s, when farmers' wagons were first chained onto flatcars. Jeff Wilson's must-have book uses detailed photographs and illustrations to explain this dynamic aspect of railroading. Includes an up-to-date history of intermodal equipment and operations. Features insightful photos and descriptions of phototype intermodal railcars, loads, and yard equipment. Presents well-illustrated tips, techniques, and instructions for modeling intermodal transportation on a layout of any scale. Provides a list of available HO and N scale intermodal equipment.
Customer Reviews:
Good prototype info.......2002-01-09
The references cite Randy Lee's Intermodal Modeler's Guide Vols 1 & 2, and there is little overlap in content between the three books. This book gives more the high level view, and makes sense of how the prototypes evolved through the last seventy years --particularly as states kept passing legislation allowing longer and longer truck cargo bodies. Well illustrated, with many pictures of prototypes demonstrating how the technology kept changing and improving.
Living near the Port of Oakland with APL's huge ship to rail operation, I wish there was some coverage of the ship offloading process getting it to rail, which would be interesting to model (particularly those huge overhead cranes). Also, while the early history section covered wagons being carried on flatcars by early electric traction lines, it ignored the early use of canal boats as "containers" hauled by steam engines on flat cars after being towed up a ramp. Still, I found a lot of interesting history here, mostly from 1950 on.
Definately the best choice for armchair reading on container shipping, and does an excellent job of presenting a coherent story of technology evolution and pointing out equipment technology details of importance to modelers in different time periods from 1950 on.

The Hotei Encyclopedia of Japanese Woodblock Prints
ASIN: 0295982713 |
Book Description
Vivid portraits of Kabuki actors on and off stage, warriors, legendary heroes and heroines; depictions of courage, loyalty, romance, passion, ghosts, dreams, and the beauty of the natural world -- all are encompassed by the prints included in Masterful Illusions. The richly illustrated book includes essays by an international group of scholars that elucidate the historic, economic, and cultural environment of Edo period Japan.
Beginning in the early nineteenth century, European collections of Japanese prints were gathered and transported far from the vibrant urban centers of Edo period (1615-1868) Japan, and today foreign collectors continue to be fascinated by Japanese prints. The collection of Anne van Biema, one of few women to become a serious collector of Japanese prints, reveals her fascination with the vigorous imagery from the Kabuki theater in the urban metropolises of Edo (now Tokyo) and Osaka, in heroic feats from Japanese history and legend, magic, dreams, and the supernatural. A less numerous but important group of prints express the beauty of nature, landscape, and poetic themes. The collection is noteworthy for its inclusion of early Kabuki actor prints, substantial holdings of prints by the artists Toyokuni (1769-1825) and Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), and of Osaka actor prints. Among the works by Kuniyoshi is a complete set of his series of fantastic stories associated with the twelve animals of the annual cycle.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK
Customer Reviews:
Dated in some respects, but timeless in others........2007-03-22
In this "sequel" to the more highly regarded TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC, author Michener adopts a somewhat different format. For each of the South Pacific islands included, he first writes an essay about its history and culture. He follows the essay with fiction, an original story set on that island. He not only writes about such obvious choices as Tahiti and Fiji; he also includes both Australia and New Zealand. His story set in New Zealand, a World War II homefront piece entitled UNTIL THEY SAIL, later became a film. That's the one part of this book that I remembered clearly, after a good 40 years, when I sat down to read RETURN TO PARADISE for the second time.
Michener's essays describe the South Pacific as it was in the late 1940s, several years before this "tail end" baby boomer was born, so today's reader needs to approach them as history and treat them accordingly. As such, they're intriguing. Some of the accompanying stories are equally dated, but I was surprised to find others echoing with human dilemmas only too familiar in today's world. UNTIL THEY SAIL didn't disappoint me a bit when read from a mature (think "old enough to be a grandma") woman's viewpoint, even though I last read it as a girl not long into adolescence. It helped me understand my parents' generation, then. This time around it reminded me that what happens to men and women separated (or brought together) by war is universal, and its dynamics never change.
Michener is always worth reading. 5 stars for sheer durability!
Worth the read.......2005-11-08
While I would be the first to say this is not as good as Tales of the south pacific, few books are. A very good read that any Michener fan will love.
A perfect book for those who read in short bursts!.......2004-01-09
Michener takes us on a tour of the islands of the Pacific Ocean with a collection of entertaining short stories of the people who inhabit them. Fictitious or not, dear reader cares less. The way he represents their populace is more than fifty years past and certainly, times may have changed. This reviewer hopes that holds equally true for Fiji !! This is one of those perfect books for someone who has limited time for reading or enjoys doing so only in short bursts.
Poor Descriptions of Indians.......2001-06-10
The pieces on Fijian-Indians in 'Fiji' and 'The Mynah Birds', in which local Indians are shown up in an ugly and racist manner, are just bad writing. To his credit Michener apologised about his untoward remarks years after the publication of the book.
Disappointing Sequel.......2000-09-12
Having read Tales of the South Pacific, one of the classics of 20th Century literature, I couldn't wait to read this 'sequel' by Michener. I wished I hadn't bothered. It seemed as if the great wordsmith was just writing because his publisher demanded to cash in on the success of 'Tales'. Disappointed, I put it down about a third of the way through and never bothered to pick it up again. It takes two to tango - even in a novel. Michener (the author) and I (the reader)danced our way through 'Tales' never missing a step. With the sequel it was if we had two left feet.
Book Description
South Africa heads toward majority rule, yet Breytenbach is far from optimistic about its future. He sees a civil war raging and the land awash in blood. "[This] book...is fueled by the sort of rage that produces great literature" (Washington Post). A New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Awarded the Alan Paton Prize.
Customer Reviews:
Good book except for one thing..........2006-02-26
I really enjoyed this book for all the cast of characters except for one. Rani!! I really felt that Benjamin deserved a much better heroine and that is why my opinion of this book is clouded. Otherwise the story is great.
A must read!.......2001-06-25
This book has strong characters, exotic settings, a wealth of historical detail. It swept me away! A riveting story about a fascinating period. Quite a storyteller.
