Book Description
"Mrs. Pollifax is the American cousin to Agatha Christie's Miss Marple."
TORONTO STAR
Mrs. Pollifax has been sent on safari by the C.I.A. and told only to take pictures of all of her companions, in order to find the international assassin whose next target is the president of Zambia. It sounded so simple, but shortly after Mrs. Pollifax started taking pictures, someone stole her film. And right after that she was kidnapped by Rhodesian terrorists. And right after that--well, read for yourself....

Fun book.......2006-07-14
Fun, easy to read adventure/mystery book. Highly recommended as an entertaining way to spend a boring evening at home or a rainy day. Dorothy Gilman certainly has a gift of description: I could just smell and feel all the aspects of the safari she was describing. There's just one thing that bugged me, though:
WARNING - SPOILER BELOW! WARNING - SPOILER BELOW!
I found it rather silly that Mrs. Pollifax - a woman who has done CIA work in the past - would advertise for her friend in the local NEWSPAPER! Even though the man was supposedly retired, she should have realized that he'd still have contacts and enemies everywhere. She should have known better than to a) blow his cover and b) endanger her mission and her life by casually advertising for him in the newspaper. Yikes, Mrs. Pollifax. That's the only thing that kept me from giving the book 5 stars. It just didn't ring true that clever-as-a-fox Mrs. Pollifax would make such a careless mistake.
Other than that, it was a delightful little book.
The Pollifax Collector.......2006-03-11
Delightful as ever! I have to admit that I've pictured a safari as hiking through jungles, so this was a true-to-life account of what one is like. So I am getting to travel vicariously and have fun "watching" the amazing Mrs. P.
Mrs. Pollifax goes to Africa.......2003-04-03
Mrs. Pollifax, intrepid gardner and karate expert, is asked to go on another assignment for the CIA. This time, she's asked to go on an African safari in order to take pictures of the participants, one of whom is a dreaded assassin named Aristotle.
She takes the pictures, and then is chagrined to learn that they have been stolen. Thereupon there is a kidnapping, a reunion with an old friend and even a bit of romance to liven up the proceedings. As usual, Dorothy Gilman populates her book with interesting characters, and a fascinating glimpse at an exotic setting. This is a must-read for Mrs. Pollifax fans, new and old.
Another fun outing for Mrs. Pollifax.......2002-02-02
(Based on the audiotape, no longer available (?) )
Mrs. Pollifax is called upon by the CIA to undertake another mission, this time to photograph members of a safari, one of whom is an international assassin, nicknamed Aristotle. She innocently posts an ad in the local newspaper trying to contact her old friend Farrell from the first book. This leads to major complications as Farrell is involved with the freedom fighters across the border and has made some enemies. Another entertaining outing and with a bit of romance as a fellow traveler takes a fancy to Mrs. Pollifax. Barbara Rosenblat does another excellent job reading, coming up with clear, distinct, and identifiable voices for a myriad of characters.
Twists and Turns.......2001-07-04
I've been re-reading the Pollifax books again for the first time in several years and I've enjoyed them all immensely. "Mrs. Pollifax on Safari" is truly a high watermark in the series as Emily finally finds romance and a love that will last. The plot is also full of twists and turns and, like Mrs. Pollifax herself, the reader just isn't sure whom to trust. Another phenomenal entry in the Pollifax canon!

Great for all Catwoman fans.......2005-06-03
This is a great story which shows Catwoman's origin. It is very interesting and probably the best portrayal of Catwoman I've ever read. There is a lot of character development, cameoes from Batman showing scenes from Frank Miller's BATMAN: YEAR ONE and it is full of crooked cops. A must have for all CATWOMAN fanatics.
Catwoman: Year One.......2004-06-08
This is the notorious Catwoman story that D.C. Comics wanted to erase from memory but it somehow surfaces every now and then. "Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper" is actually "Catwoman: Year One" (or the closest we will ever get to a "Year One" for the feline fatale) as it ties in very closely to Frank Miller's justly-classic "Batman: Year One". In fact, it more than "ties-into" that work; entire scenes were lifted from Miller's original and put into this volume. In fact, the present writer/artist seem to have created their story in this volume by wrapping some "filler-info" around those famous Miller-scenes.
As to the notoriety of the work, this volume, like Miller's "Batman: Year One" gives us a Selina Kyle who works as a prostiture/sexual-dominatrix. But more than that, it ties her to religion (Selina's sister is a Catholic nun) and child-prostitution/abuse in the character of Holly. Furthermore, this tale revives the classic sexual attraction between Batman and Catwoman with a classic kiss shared by the two on the rooftop (a scene stolen by Tim Burton and added to the movie, "Batman Returns").
According to DC Editorial decrees, this work is no longer part of official continuity (after the continuity altering event called "Zero Hour"). However, DC continuity is a tricky thing and so are Editorial decrees. In recent years, it seems to be back in "official continuity" as the current Ed Brubaker "Catwoman" series seems like a direct continuation of this book (Holly and Selina's sister features prominently in Brubaker's run). Therefore, it is an essential read in Catwoman's long legend.
Continuity aside, this is really a difficult book to like. The art is choppy at times, and the scenes "lifted" from Miller's work (originally drawn by David Mazzuchelli) does not help either. In truth, it only adds to the frustration that this work wasn't done by the original Miller-Mazzuchelli team! About the only element in this tale that is half-decent is the introduction of Ted Grant (the Golden Age JSA-er, Wildcat) as Selina Kyle's mentor. The writing is very, very uneven and the pacing is hopeless. Reading it again recently, I felt like I was watching a bootleg, unedited David Lynch movie. After a while, I gave up on the pacing and tried to make as much sense of the story as possible. Honestly, if not for my great love for the characters (Batman and Catwoman), I'd probably give up by the first chapter.
My copy is an original first-print tradepaperback with the original painted cover and an excellent foreword by the late Archie Goodwin. Goodwin compares Catwoman to the movie "Cat People" and talks a little about sexual repression and the need for split-personas. Interesting stuff.
This volume is recommended to all Batman/Catwoman historians as well as the new fans just getting in with the Ed Brubaker monthly. It is also recommended as an antidote to purge the poison of the new Warner Bros. "Catwoman" movie starring Halle Berry. The real Catwoman is in here; NOT in that movie!
Catwoman as you never will see again.......2000-07-22
It's a very good book, featuring the "firt" and more adult origin of Catwoman (before being spoiled in the zero hour fiasco), linking it to the batman origins also, giving us a chance to see the dark night when he was just a begginer, the book has a dark tone, but it tells a very good story about pain, suffering and vengance, I only dislike the fact that there isn't much about the origin of the custome (first one, with a tail) maybe because of the comic restrictions for the time it was published.

Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health. --Stephanie Gold

Saved My Dog's Life.......2007-08-21
When it comes to human coughing, we know it will get better if we're otherwise normal. I learned from this book that when a dog coughs, it is always bad. Always. I took my dog to the vet in the nick of time. The day after he was given heavy doses of antibiotics and other meds, he nearly died from not being able to breathe because of the congestion in his chest. He is a 12yo Akita so his recovery has been slow, but he is definitely improving. I have to thank the authors and publishers of this book as they made it easy to find my dog's symptoms, (symptoms are listed on the inside cover - no digging necessary) and then to determine that my dog should see the vet immediately. The only reason this book scores a 4 instead of a 5 is because my dog's nose was terribly stuffed up and I couldn't find anything relating to that in there. The caveat to this is that I only bought the book a week ago and have not had a chance to read it all. It could be in there somewhere. :o) Big book. Small price. Well worth it.
excellent resource.......2007-07-31
This is an excellent resource. It is technical but in an easy to read format. Unfortunately, the pictures are few and in black and white.
Excellent Resource.......2007-07-24
I've had my copy of this book for 10 years now and have referred to it many times. It helps me to articulate my concerns to our vet when necessary and to calm my nerves when one of my pets presents with some symptom or ailment. My vet has commented on it herself as a great resource. I'm ordering the one for horse owners as I've recently acquired my first horse and hope to be equally happy. It is better than any web site or other dogs for dummies kind of book. The best features are the Index of Signs and Symptoms, the common household medications and the fact that it doesn't just resort to the "consult your veterinarian for more information" for everything beyond fleas.
Good home reference book.......2007-07-16
I have referred to this book several times when trying to figure out what's wrong with my dog. It is user friendly and comprehensive. If it saves you a trip to the vet, then it is worth the 20 bucks already.
This book has already paid for itself!.......2007-05-30
This is hands down, the best book out there for dog care. For those hwo say it's not good for emergency situations, it's not ment that. That is when you should stop worrying about money, put down the book, and get your dog to the vet. My dog was suffering from liver disease and when he started to act a little strange and confused I looked it up and discovered he had "Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)." I was able to call my vet and describe his symptoms and explain that I thought he was HE and the vet gave us a prescription without having to bring him in. That right there was enough to pay for the book. It is written in a way that everyone can understand and is easy to follow. I only gave it four stars because it was missing some things that I was looking for, such as syncope and more in depth with kidney disease.

Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners.......2006-07-10
I found this book disappointing, and much prefer her previous book.
Great Guide, OK recipes.......2004-06-02
This book is interesting to read and great help in deciding what to eat to balance your vikrities (imbalances). You start out learning some Ayurvedic basics and then you can test yourself to find out what your dosha (constitution) is. Then you learn what foods and tastes agrivate or calm that dosha. It tells you a little bit about what the symptoms of an imbalance might be, but I got more descriptive information about that on the Internet. One reason I like this book is because me and my fiance are different constitutions, and this book tells us which foods will calm/ balance us both. There are simple instructions on most recipes that explain how to modify the recipe so that it suits a person with a different constitution. It also has codes for what seasons to eat what food, and every chapter or so has interesting blurbs about different foods and philosophies. That part I enjoy. And from my experience, Ayurveda WORKS. Fast and precisely.
Feeling flighty, hyper, dried out and flaky? Balance your Vata. Feeling irritable, is your skin oily, have heartburn, or an infection? Balance your Pitta. Are you overweight, or sluggish? Balance your Kapha. Eating ayurvedicly will heal all/ any of those (and many other) ailments very quickly. I haven't been sick at all since I started paying attention to my ayurvedic needs, and I used to get sick all the time. I am a Pitta person, and by eating to calm pitta imbalances, I wiped out acne in a short time (a week) - something prescription creams and antibiotics didn't help with at all. In doing so, I also managed to become a less angry, irritable person. But remember that this is a continuous process. Balancing one dosha can offset another. That's why its such a fine art and requires years of training to become a certified practitioner. This (and other ayurveda books) have helped me become more in tune with my body and mind. I also notice a lot of other people's imbalances, and surprisingly I am now able to understand other people's mood changes, personalities, and tendencies by determining their dosha and their imbalances. Granted, I didn't get this way just from reading this book alone, but this is the one that sparked my interest to read more about ayurveda elsewhere. I'd definitely get this book with another book on Ayurvedic philosophy, signs and symptoms of imbalances, and other non-dietic ways to balance your dosha (like yoga, oil massage and pranayama). I'd recommend maybe one by Robert Svaboda or Deepak Chopra.
The recipes are all very easy to make. I've tried quite a few of them, everything from their fruit bowls to pasta sauces. Unfortunately, they're not all ones I enjoy eating... I eat them more for their healing aspects rather than for their tastiness. However, from what I've heard, tastier ayurvedic recipes exist.
I also found a few spelling errors, and a medical discrepency. This book says Pitta people should eat/ favor apricots while every other source says pitta people should avoid apricots. Of course, many ayurvedic professionals disagree with certain things, but I found this confusing and discreditting to the author.
Overall, I like the book but think it could offer more in terms of knowledge, and tastier recipes.
Helpful!.......2002-11-14
This was one of the cookbooks used as reference for a six hour introductory workshop on Ayurveda that I attended. I had a chance to leaf through it, along with three other cookbooks, and this one seemed to be the most useful with a good background included on the basic concepts of ayurveda. I have USED it! As anyone who has a cookbook collection will recognize, this is the ultimate recommendation!
There are better Ayurvedic cookbooks.......2002-02-21
I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be. This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices. Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none. Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.
Excellent!.......2001-12-02
This cookbook provides a thorough explanation of Ayurvedic concepts, including the 5 elements and 3 constitutions or doshas. Each recipe comes with a -/+/0 to indicate that a certain dish can calm, aggravate, or have a neutral effect on each dosha. Living in a multi-dosha household, this feature alone makes the book one of my favorites! The recipes and ideas in this help meld ayurvedic principles with traditional American life.

Customer Reviews:
eh.........2007-08-09
My first thought when I took it out of the packaging was "Are you kidding me?". But I thought that maybe even if the book was very small that it would be worth the $20 that I paid. Yes, there is some useful information that I may have had trouble finding somewhere else but the truth is, I have read a lot of this stuff online already so yes, I was a bit disappointed. I was looking to find something specific to malt-i-poos since it appears to be practically non-existent. Yes, I'm going to keep it since I am sure I can refer to it here and there without having to sign online and google the info BUT mostly, because I don't want to avoid the hassle of returns. If you want a quick, brief, guide this is ok.
LOVE IT.......2007-04-26
I bought both of Lynn's books as I was getting my maltipoo from her and I found them extremely helpful and VERY informative. I don't understand why there have been bad reviews of this book. It gives you everything you need to know about the breed and it also gives you information about maltipoos that only someone who has owned and raised a maltipoo would know. I refer back to these books every time I need some guidance with my 4 month old maltipoo. I love this book and Lynn's other book and I think that they are a MUST HAVE for anyone who is getting a maltipoo.
Not Worth It.......2006-09-27
I completely agree with the prior review. This book is certianly not worth over $10. Don't waste the money.
not worth the money paid for.......2006-09-01
i am a stay at home mom and i read this book in fifteen minutes and do not think it was worth the money i paid for it. maybe this is a nine ninety nine book. it is a shame they overpriced this item.
Finally, a book about Malt-i-poos!.......2006-03-08
This is a wonderful book which really highlights how to care for the Malt-i-poo cross breed. I have not come across any other book that directly discusses the needs and care of Malt-i-poos. I highly recommend the book for those who wish for specific information on the upbringing of this breed.

Truly wonderful quilling resource.......2007-08-31
The first part of the book gives a nice overview of the basics (similar and includes directions for folded roses and how to make curled flowers with paper rectangles (which is not in most beginner quilling books).
The book offers a variety of projects that are definitely doable by any one who has a basic knowledge and a little practice in making the basic shapes. It starts with lovely flower-based designs and includes a lot more variety. I especially liked the Fall Harvest Design (I think it would make a lovely design for a serving tray during the fall season - covered with glass of course.) There is a cute teddy bear waving from behind a flowered fence, a quilt-block design (I am definitely making this one), a smiling tiger, some jewelry pieces, and an antique car, and several others. I really like the pattern for the free standing angels and plan to make these.
The gallery at the end of the book is truly inspiring and shows you just how awesome art work in quilling can be with large colorful photographs (some are museum quality pieces).
If you are serious about developing your quilling skills beyond scrapbooking, looking for some ideas for your home or to give as gifts, then I would recommend adding this book to your quilling library.

My FAVORITE quilling book (and I have them all).......2001-06-26
I LOVE this book. It has clear directions and beautiful pictures for a large variety of projects you'd be proud to own or give, as well as a gallery to offer inspiration. My copy is studded with bookmarks for all kinds of things, from cookie jars to tree ornaments, framed wedding invitations, borders for favorite quotes, foreign alphabets (such as the Hebrew letters shown), etc. Although I own every quilling book published in the USA in the last 40 years and most of those from overseas, this remains my very favorite ... It just seems to offer the most beautiful projects and the most variety.
FANTASTIC! Clear directions for gorgeous projects.......2001-06-05
I love this book! Quilling (paper filigree) is a breathtakingly beautiful art dating back many centuries, which nuns used to use to make exquisite reliquiries (sp?). Some of the work can be found in museums. Best of all, it is easy to master and unbelievably low cost ... Although it won't be archival, many people cut their own strips by putting recycled paper (including flyers and other paper with printing on one side) through a standard paper shredder. You can quill using only your fingers, a corsage pin, a toothpick, a purchased tool, or one you make yourself by gluing the pointed end of a sewing needle into the eraser end of a pencil (pushing it in, then letting it dry) and then cutting off the tip of the hole, leaving a wonderful slot that won't leave a mark. What other art is low cost, portable, easy, gorgeous, etc.?
This book features a gallery (with such gorgeous work as a lion), plus photos and directions for all kinds of quilled projects. My personal favorite is Bobbye Singer's swans (with their necks forming a heart). On the quick-but-beautiful scale is a lady's quilling of the word shalom, with a dove of peace over one end.
The directions are clear to get you started in no time. Just remember that the book was written by a lady who sells quilling paper, patterns, and tools, and thus doesn't stress how to inexpensively make your own. But that certainly doesn't mean that you can't.
Although I own almost every quilling book, booklet, video, and pattern available, this is my personal favorite. VERY highly recommended.
Just an average book.......2000-05-26
This book seemed similar to Melinda Johnston's other quilling book. It had basically all large projects in it - which is not very helpful for the modern quillist. For someone who wants to quill more modern pieces and cards, I would recommend Mickey Baskett's book.

Excellent book with great pictures and drawings.......2005-07-08
This is an excellent book for quillers of all skill levels. I've been quilling for over 45 years and this is one of my most worn books.
She has 8 pages of basic instructions including how to create fringed flowers and roses. She also has information on using metallic papers, sealing your project and crimping.
She has both drawn patterns and color pictures. There are very clear instructions on what each mark on the drawings mean. In one the x denotes fringed flowers. At the top of the instructions is a ledger that explains what each mark means. The instuctions are easy to follow and explain the steps in creating your coils and joining them to create a design.
with over 70 projects this book is a very good value.
Cute projects but hard-to-follow diagrams.......2005-01-15
This book contains over sixty quilling projects for creating gifts, paintings, and cards in categories such as "Easy Floral Designs," "Weddings & Anniversaries," and "Christmas Cards." If you're interested in Victoriana or folk art, "Practical Quilling" will explain a simple decorative technique that was at one time referred to as 'paper filigree.'
Supplies include quilling paper (which you can buy pre-cut into strips), quilling tools which resemble small long-needled awls, blank cards, scissors, straight pins, and glue (I suggest paper glue). Another very useful piece of equipment is a quilling cork board marked with circles where you can pin your petals, rolls, leaves, and hearts into (say) a Christmas wreath before gluing the individual pieces together. An optional piece of equipment is a fringing tool ($50 at the quillingsuperstore.com). You might also want a paper crimper. Both of the latter items are needed for any fancy flower creations.
Unfortunately, this Aussie author has not created very clear, easy-to-understand diagrams to work from. Her drawings are filled with mysterious X's O's and spirals which are not shown to scale on a grid, which would have made them easier to copy. There are some very cute projects in "Practical Quilling" including a jaunty frog, and some very beautiful flower cards, but I would recommend Malinda Johnston's "Paper Quilling" Weekend Crafter manual over this book for ease of use.

Customer Reviews:
parts were ok.......2007-04-24
I have to admit, I did not like this book. While parts were ok, on the whole it failed to grab me and entirely failed to satisfy. Random memories with little semblance of order, all dramatized a bit too much.
The story line has a lot of potential, but the presentation needs a lot of work.
a very good book.......2007-01-10
I heard about Pauli Murray in my North Carolina History. I chose to read her book as a book report and was blown away. The book was easy to understand and i could relate to the author.
Awesome reading!!..........2002-12-01
My Civil War history professor required us to read this for his class. I was always taught the horrific side of the Civil War and Reconstruction and I will always have that side in my memory. I never knew the real story of the few blacks that well off than their poorer counterparts. Pauli Murray should consider herself thankful for being allowed to grow up in her racially tolerant neighborhood. This should be required reading for high school and college students.
Courageous Family Autobiography.......2000-02-05
Pauli Murray was reared in an extraordinary extended family of Northern Freedmen who had come South after fighting with the Union Army & Southern aristocrats-Indians-Slaves. Her great-aunt donated the land in Chapel Hill on which sits the University which denied her admission.
This is a story of the courage of the "Yankee Schoolmarms" (including her Grandfather)who brought education to the newly freed slaves, and the courage of those who sought the education he offered. Her aunts also followed their father in lives devoted to education. One of the most moving moments in the book is when her Aunt Pauline read the Supreme Court's decision to integrate in 1954, the year before her death. "Thank G-d, I have lived to see this day," she said.
Murray's own life was more than worthy of the ambitions they instilled in her. This is the way an autobiographical family story _should_ be written: if only such writers were thick on the ground.
