Book Description
"Mrs. Gilman has a nice, relaxed style and an easygoing way of telling a story....Should delight you whether you're looking for smiles or thrills."
--The New York Times Book Review
The last thing Mrs. Pollifax expects to find in her junk closet is a young woman hiding. Kadi Hopkirk insists that she's being followed by two men in a dirty white van. Under the cover of darkness, Mrs. P. tries to drive Kadi back home to Manhattan, only to have a dark green sedan give them a run for their money and, Mrs. P. begins to suspect, their lives.
Finally Kadi shares the startling truth: her friend, Sammy, is the son of the assassinated president of an African country and, unbeknownst to the young man's bodyguard, he passed her something under the table during a recent meeting. Ever resourceful, Mrs. P. puts in a call for help to her CIA colleague, Carstairs, who installs them in a safe house--at a carnival! Before Mrs. P. knows it, a dash to safety expands into an assignment that leads to hair-trigger violence in exotic places....
"Lively...Funny...All's right with the world as long as Mrs. Pollifax is part of it."
--Mobile Register
"This fast-moving tale sports a lively, energetic style, much like its heroine."
--Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
A great series especially for older readers!!.......2007-02-09
There is a great difficulty in finding all the works of this author and that is a shame. They would be a great series especially for those of us entering retirement and preferring to listen to books rather then reading them. They are well written and fun and thoroughly enjoyable. The author needs to have all of the series put on tape or cd!!
My Least Favorite Pollifax Adventure.......2003-08-26
Mrs. Pollifax is an senior citizen who works for the CIA. When Mrs. Pollifax finds a college student hiding in her storage closet, she soon becomes the target of hitmen. Can Mrs. Pollifax elude her pursuers and protect Kadi (the college student) from harm?
I am a big fan of Mrs. Pollifax, but I found Mrs. Pollifax Pursued to be a bit disjointed, and cluttered with too many annoying minor characters. I liked the circus theme, but I found Kadi very irritating and too helpless for my taste. She acts like an infant, rather than a college age adult. I also wished the author had stuck with the Circus theme. I found the dynamics of the sideshow much more interesting than the farfetched African theme. Overall, while I enjoyed Mrs. Pollifax pursued, I wished it had been a tad more realistic. This novel was too farfetched for me to find it as enjoyable as the other adventures.
Delightful Mrs. Pollifax adventure.......2003-05-01
This time Mrs. Pollifax begins her adventure right in her own back yard when she discovers Kadi, a young woman who is fleeing her pursuers and is hiding in Mrs. P's house. She tries to help the girl get away, but the pursuers are right on her tail, so she appeals to Carstairs, her CIA contact, who sends her to a "safe house". Much to her surprise the safe house turns out to be a carnival and Mrs. Pollifax and Kadi learn some new skills to become part of their new environment. Someone who is also on the run and is hiding in the carnival is badly beaten and Mrs. Pollifax has a new angle to explore. This is all tied in with Kadi's friendship with a young man from a small African country and the disappearance of a wealthy American businessman. Before it's over, Mrs. P. and Kadi are whisked to Africa and new problems surface before a satisfactory ending is achieved. This is a delightful romp with the intrepid 60-something heroine and most of it is set in the United States, a nice change of pace from her other adventures.
A few too many coincidences, but still fun.......2002-02-02
For a change, trouble finds Mrs. Pollifax instead of the other way around, when she finds a young woman hiding out in her closet. An extended chase ensues, ending up with Mrs. Pollifax and Kadi, the young woman, hiding out in a carnival subsidized by Mrs. P's CIA friends for just such a purpose. The threads are complex, and there are a few more coincidences than are comfortable, but it all boils down to a plot to take over the African country where Kadi grew up and where her friend Sammy has a politically prominent position.
It's another enjoyable Pollifax romp, weakened a bit by the coincidences, but again brilliantly read by Barbara Rosenblat, whose skill I admire ever more increasingly with each new voice she comes up with.
Solid entertainment........2001-07-29
_Mrs. Pollifax Pursued_ is definitely candy for the mind. It's a very quick read, entertaining precisely long enough to be a treat, contains nothing challenging and nothing difficult. The characters are fun, the plot isn't too unbelievable, and the writing is excellent. It should be just the thing if you're in the right mood.
Mrs. Pollifax finds young Kadi hiding out in her closet, and takes her on the run to escape her pursuers. The Bishop stashes them in a rather unusual safe house-- a carnival in rural Maine-- and together they need to discover why Kadi is in so much danger.

The same brain chemicals that are altered by antidepressant drugs are also affected by the foods we eat. According to addiction expert DesMaisons, many people, including those who are depressed, are "sugar sensitive." Eating sweets gives them a temporary emotional boost, which leads to a craving for still more sweets. The best way to keep these brain chemicals in the right balance and keep blood-sugar levels steady, she says, is through the dietary plan she describes in Potatoes Not Prozac. Her rules are fairly simple--eat three meals a day, eat proteins with every meal (especially those high in the amino acid tryptophan, which creates the calming neurotransmitter serotonin), and eat more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and, yes, potatoes. Not only will this make you less depressed, DesMaisons says, but it will also keep you from craving too much of the foods you shouldn't eat, making it a self-regulating system.
Book Description
Can't say no to fattening foods, alcohol or compulsive behaviors?
You're not lazy, self-indulgent or undisciplined; you may be one of the millions of people who are sugar sensitive. Many people who suffer from sugar sensitivity don't even know it; they continue to consume large quantities of sweets, breads, pasta or alcohol. These foods can trigger feelings of exhaustion and low self-esteem, yet their biochemical impact makes sugar-sensitive people crave them even more. This vicious cycle can continue for years, leaving sufferers overweight, fatigued, depressed and sometimes alcoholic.
Now there is a solution: in Potatoes Not Prozac Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons gives you the tools you need to overcome sugar dependency, with self-tests to determine your sugar sensitivity as well as an easy-to-follow, drug-free program with a customized diet high in protein and complex carbohydrates. Join the thousands of people who have successfully healed their addiction to sugar, lost weight and attained maximum health and well-being by using Dr. DesMaisons's innovative plan.

The info is great, the book is great, but there's more info in the more recent books.
Odd.......2007-07-02
There are some things that trouble me about this book, like push snacking to mealtime. Hum... and her idea of snacks is what sparks the whole sugar sensitivity process. I like Suzann Somers' book is better; she explains the carbs. This book just tells you to keep track of what you eat, when you eat and how you feel after eating whatever it is you eat. I think you should watch what you eat and you should know what you're eating. This book makes very few explanations about what each food is and how it helps your mind, except by saying eat protein and don't eat refined sugar.
Prescribe Your Own Anti-Depressants and Improve Your Life.......2007-03-15
This book and Natural Prozac changed how I look at food. In our sugar and caffiene addicted world where food is a commodity to be inhaled on the run, it's easy to lose perspective on what food is and how it affects us. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to balance their mood, improve how they feel and function during the day or stablize their sleeping habits.
Timeless Advice!.......2007-03-04
I read this just recently, long after it came out, but after following it for a month, I have more energy, I'm not stuck in that numbing lethargy that was a sort of depression, and I've lost a little weight. This book is right on, and I highly recommend it.
I'm FAT and miserable but not craving sugar.... Woopie.........2007-02-12
I am addicted to sugar. I read this book and kept a journal of my eating habits. I stopped craving sugar, but now I'm fat. I've gone from my slender size 2-4 to a plump size 6 pushing size 8. There has to be a better way... I've got a Michelin tire around my waste that waddles when I walk... I think I need some alcohol to feel better. HA!

Customer Reviews:
Good Stevia Cookbook.......2007-10-06
This is a good book. It gives you the nutritional breakdowns which is nice, and compares them to the same products made with sugar. She uses healthy ingredients, but not much in the way of whole grains. It's definitely low-carb friendly, as you can easily see how many carbs each recipe will set you back. None of the recipies include other sugar sources which is nice to see in a stevia cookbook.
Delicious!!!.......2006-01-27
The Rich Ricotta Cheese Pie was a huge hit with my family. Also tried the cannoli with excellent results. The best part is NOOO guilt since all the deserts are sugarless. Can't wait to try the rest.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for those with little problems.......2007-01-06
This book is great for those with no knowledge of how dogs work. Campbell does a great job in explaining what is motivating the behavior of dogs and how to modify that behavior in simple and humane ways. I have a previous general knowledge of animal behavior - and I found the tips, tricks and methods suggested in this book were intuitive and useful. I saw adjustment in my dog's behavior after a few days. The trick with smart dogs is to get your friends to treat the dog in a manner that will assist your training process so they will generalize what they have learned (which is the problem my husband and I are having). A cute smart dog can be a real challenge! I highly suggest getting this book if you have a dog - even if you think you know everything, it's a great read.
An invaluable guide, especially for new owners.......2006-03-03
Pet owners who face dilemmas in handling or training dogs will find plenty of answers in The New Better Behavior In Dogs: A Guide To Solving All Your Dog Problems. The focus here is upon understanding the dog's psyche and needs; from what factors influence successful training routines to what causes a dog to misbehave. Various types of behavior from aggression towards babies and adults to digging and jumping on people are handled in chapters which survey all aspects of dog psychology: an invaluable guide, especially for new owners.
GREAT ! ..........2001-05-19
Just finished reading the book ... didn't take long because it's well written, entertaining and organised ... The book flows from chapter to chapter, topic to topic with nary a hitch.
The author explains how a dog thinks! ... How a dog senses & relates to the world and it's human' pack ... Most important, the author explains how a dog learns ...
Campbell's training methods are both humane and effective ... Before we can train our dogs, we have to first train ourselves, to be more understanding, to be more flexible and tolerant ...
He emphasises an uncomfortable truth ... that there are few problem dogs, and far more problem owners! His chapter on "How People & the Environment create Behaviour Problems" made my ears go red with embarrassment ...*laughs* ...
The book deals with and offers practical solutions to almost every difficult situation a dog owner is likely to encounter ... Reading this book cannot but help me become a better trainer and friend to our Beagle and Labrador ...
Indeed, dogs are amazing animals ... they don't choose us, we choose them ... and the least we can do is try and learn to understand them ... and this book will help me do that ... its gonna be an interesting if not amazing journey ...
A wonderful book ...
PS ... Campbell recommends Idris Shah's 'The Sufis' as helpful reading ... and he is absolutely correct ...
Excellent.......2000-08-19
This is another book of those wonderful ones which deal with dog
problems and reach solutions, suitable for experts and beginners. Tens
of funny (but truly meaningful) illustrations show you how your dog
translates your behavior. That's how I saw them, humorous but
true. The book covers all phases of the development of the dog, from
the day you will bring it at home, to the day you will have the
perfect dog. One phrase I made banner from this book, what I was
always supporting: "I won't tell you that dogs are 'denning'
animals, so crate training your dog is 'natural'. That's not the
truth. The only denning dog or wolf is a pregnant [one,] and when she
and the pups leave their dens, they are plainly joyful to be out of
it!" People, please keep this in mind when you read in other
books about crates for your puppy.
The book begins with firstly
understanding your dog and their behavior, and how do they think,
their natural reactions and how they learn. Aggressive behavior, how
do dogs sense their world (vision, smell, hearing, taste, touch, pain
and so forth) How they communicate, their social development from life
in the litter to the day they join a human family. In chapter six, it
deals with puppy stuff, includes a puppy behavior test, from making
your selection to the arrival at home, house training and socializing.
Puppy training includes the basic: name recognition, commands like
come, sit, stay.
The second part of the book analyzes what causes a
dog to misbehave with first the human element (I liked this one. We
confuse our little friends and then wonder why do they misbehave!!)
How health and nutrition affect the dog; here a troubleshooting is
included: physical problem - associated behavior problems. What
follows this chapter is analyzing and treating the cause of the
problem, and techniques to avoid like electrical shock devices, cages
(dogs are not birds!)
In part three the author shows how to correct
behavior problems like aggression toward owners, how to introduce
babies and new pets to the established dog, barking and how to correct
it even when you are not at home. Other behavior problems and their
solutions include car sickness, car chasing, chewing, coprophagia,
digging, escaping, fearfulness, fighting with other dogs, jumping on
people, old age problems, over protectiveness and much much more.
When I finished the book I couldn't think of any dog problem which was
not included. In fact I even read about things I never encountered
before. With humane solutions and love, the author managed to write a
perfect book which guarantees ever lasting solutions. It is perhaps
the most wonderful book I read about dog behavior and how to solve the
problems. A big thanks to Mr. Campbell

Great book! Much better than others.......2001-05-30
My husband and I are getting ready to build our own house and as such have purchased a lot of house plan books - learning after the first couple purchased that they all contain basically the same flor plans. This book on the other hand was a great find as we had not seen the vast majority of plans in it, but were also very pleased to find it full of very unique, aesthetically pleasing and even practical building ideas. I highly recommend this book - hands down over any other one I've seen.
Hillside/Sloping lots neglected (somewhat).......2001-01-31
This book is great if you're building on flat or very gently sloping terrain. The cross section of plans can fit most lots and the plans are very high quality either as is or as an inspiration for your own design. If you're looking for ideas for a sloping lot this is not the book. The section on hillside homes is really poor especially for a book of 500 plans!
500 House Plans.......2000-06-05
I think this book was great, and encourage people looking for houses to buy it. I'm looking for a new house and it helped me.

Book Description
Wild Daisies in the Sand reopens a chapter of North American World War II history. This book is a series of diary entries beginning in 1941, when author Tom Sando was imprisoned in concentration camps, first in Petawawa and then Angler, Ontarioa young Japanese Canadian imprisoned only because he was willing to stand and fight for his rights as a Canadian. The Japanese Canadians relocated to Petawawa and Angler were imprisoned in maximum security penitentiaries: compounds encircled by three layers of barbed wire fences, and under constant surveillance by rifle-armed guards stationed in watchtowers. These people were not prisoners-of-war or even criminals, but Canadian civilians deemed dangerous by the Canadian government because of their race.
Wild Daisies in the Sand is a unique first-hand look at a part of the Japanese internment that many people are still unfamiliar with. Tom Sando relates his story of loneliness, fear, and eventually friendship and hope, candidly and with careful thought.
