A 'Vicar'ious reading experience!.......2006-12-19
I've dabbled in the more recent 'Lloyd and Hill' (or 'Hill and Lloyd') novels before, but it wasn't til I went back and read this earlier entry that I began to really appreciate the two lead characters. The frustration at this stage of their relationship reminded me of Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' 'Bill Slider and Joanna'.
The story itself was worthwhile, even if the 'Christie' references were just passing comments in the book, which were emphasized in the reviews at the front.
McGown gave both the romantic subplot and the main murder story enough time and space to breathe. For whatever reason, this is more of a problem later in the series, when the supporting characters crowd out the regulars.
The 'guest' characters here all seemed believable, though none of them were too sympathetic or likable.
The downside was that the revelation of the murderer seemed a bit forced and 'tacked on' but it still had an emotional impact.
For those unfamiliar with the series, this would be a good starting point if you can find the earlier books.
Fascinating mystery.......2006-02-23
While this is not an exceptionally long book, there's a world of intriguing plotting going on. Inspector Lloyd and Detective Sgt. Hill have to do some clever interrogating and careful thinking to discover the one who took the life of wife-beater Graham Elstow.
Nicely written little police procedural with twists..........2003-03-03
I'm struggling with this review of what was a really fun book that had loads of my favorite police procedural elements and serves as the introduction to a writer I hadn't previously read, but have seen very well reviewed. So why am I struggling? Because it was a fun book and I enjoyed it, but it is not particularly dynamic. It is actually more like the "Cornwall" books by Janie Bolitho. But I don't want to damn it with faint praise because it was a wonderful character study and frankly, I couldn't read a "Minette Walters-style" book every time - too exhausting. So let me just say that this is a nice, quick fun read and I see nothing here that doesn't make me want to read more McGown books. Ouch! That sounds like faint praise. Let me try again: as much as this is a murder mystery (the murdered is completely unsympathetic so no pathos there), this is a fine character study of the true motivations and desires of people we assume have their lives all figured out and a small meditation on how time and place can drive decisions that should not be so easily influenced. There...that's better.
Snowstorm murder.......2003-02-24
I really enjoyed this British "cozy". Tight and plausible plotting, likable characters--I'm planning to read more of McGown's mysteries. Something not mentioned in the other reviews is that this story takes place during the Christmas season, during a snowstorm; there's a real wintry atmosphere. It would make a good Christmas gift for a mystery fan.
Pretty Good British Procedural.......2002-06-07
I read this book because it was an Amazon recommendation. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a pretty good little mystery. The plot keeps you guessing right through. It's also a twist when you have too many self-confessed killers in the classic "closed door" mystery story. Lloyd and Judy are an interesting detective pair. It's intersting to see their personal story unfold along with the plot. I think I may try to read more in this series to see if Ms. McGown continues to create classic little puzzles like this one.

This Book is really "Old School".......2007-08-19
I've been an anxiety sufferer for a few years now. I've had PTSD (from active combat in the army), OCD and panic attacks. Bournes two books (this book and his workbook) help manage the anxiety, but don't fix it. This book may be good for a psychologists repeat business, but is little use for a person who suffers from anxiety. Bourne was the leader in anxiety related problems about ten years ago, but hasn't moved on with the new discoveries that have been made. For my anxiety problems I found The Linden Method or Panic Away method to be greatly superior. Neither of these concepts are even covered in this book, so I would not recommend it.

I've danced around with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks off and on for several years. So, I've read many, many books. After my symptoms restarted recently, I found this book. This is a great book to read after you understand the various mental and physical sources and symptoms of anxiety disorders.
This book helps you put your knowledge to use and create your own healing program.
It's simple, yet comprehensive, covering diet problems that can exacerbate anxiety, thinking patterns that cause anxiety and relaxation techniques to use when you're experiencing anxiety or when you're just taking relaxing time for long-term healing. But, you still have to decide which techniques will work for you and use them every day. This gives you many options in a simple, straightforward format.

I love this cookbook. I even gave away my Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking cookbook. The cookbook is so easy to understand. All the recipies really on have 4 ingredients. I made the lime chicken and it was so tasty. It is now in my regular food rotation.

For many years I have raised & trained in obedience, Rottweilers. I have quite a few Rottie books I have accumulated through the years but recently, when I was waiting for a new puppy, I read "The Rottweiler: Centuries of Service," & found it to be the best one ever. It went past the confirmation of these wonderful working dogs & into the working, health & temperament more thoroughly than I have ever read.

this is the third book i have read on rottweilers. i have enjoyed every page of it. it is very easy to read and understand. the pictures are fabulous. the topics cover almost everything you would want to know about the rottweiler. the authors have many years of experience with rottweilers and give their advice, hints, and instructions on things such as showing and building a whelping box. i love this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in this breed from curiousity to expert.

We have 2 dogs... a Boxer and a Rottweiler. After I bought "The Boxer - Family Favorite" by the same publisher (Wiley & Sons), I decided I must have this one regarding my other favorite breed... the Rottweiler. A good looking hard cover book with 250+ pages of excellent info. Pictures adorn most pages. Topics include: History, breeding, basic care, health & symptoms, activities for you & your dog, training tips, size & incredible strength, enjoyment, and so much more. It is clearly evident that authors Thompson and Michels are dedicated to the breed. Anyone owning or considering the Rottweiler as a pet should have this book. I have half a dozen books on the breed and I find myself reaching for this one the most. Any dog-lover will admire all the pictures of these big beautiful animals and understandable print. A wonderful read.

That the authors have years of experience in the rottweiler breed is evident both in this amazing book, and in the pedigrees of the many dogs enjoying enormous success in the AKC rottweiler ring today. There are more pictures in this edition than the 3rd but I feel the 3rd edition had more details that are missing in the 4th edition. Like the Spanish FR-7 and FR-8, there are details and differences that are addressed in the 3rd edition of these 2 rifles that are omitted in the 4th. It is a nice general review of the mausers.

This is the best edition Yet! Great color photos and detail. Very well laid out by country. This makes it so easy to find what you are looking for. A thorough reference work on the Mauser rifle. If you are a bolt action collector or shooter, then this is a core book that should be in your library. If I could have only one book on Mauser bolt guns, then this is it. Hats off to Mr. Ball!
Much Improved 4th Edition.......2007-01-02
The 4th Edition is much improved over previous editions. It's impossible to have a book to cater to all collectors, everyone has there own tastes. For what it's worth so far I've noticed that most of the innacurate information has been weeded out. It doesn't give as much detailed information as I would like, but for a basic treatise on mauser rifles it's darn good

James II enjoyed one of the most sumptuous coronations and one of the shortest reigns in the history of English monarchy. Newsbooks and diaries recorded the event; panegyrics, songs, and broadsides publicized it; and Francis Sandford's festival book described and illustrated its ceremonies and sites--from the intricate descriptions of habit, ornament, and regalia through the numbingly detailed catalogues of meats and confections drawn up for the coronation feast, to the procession, installation, and magnificent closing fireworks. The coronation was designed to make the king as welcome to the heart as to the eye; nothing was spared in Sandford's book, no ornament or expense, that "could do to the making of the Spectacle, Dazling and Stupendous." The chief instrument of Sandford's spectacle was the suite of plates that recorded the events of April 23, 1685.
Festival books had long been popular on the Continent, but nothing so elaborate as this volume had ever been produced for the installation of an English monarch. Adorned with twenty-seven plates and three large images of crowns and scepters, Sandford's History of the Coronation was a major publishing endeavor. Indeed, it was nearly two years in the making; the book finally appeared just in time for the Glorious Revolution. Sandford and his collaborator, Gregory King, were barely able to recoup the costs of its production. The market for the book abruptly disappeared after November 1688, and although Sandford and King were experienced hands in such enterprises, the expense and timing of The History of the Coronation nearly bankrupted Sandford, who died in debtor's prison in 1694.
