Wonderfully insightful anthology .......2005-11-19

You will enjoy this book if you enjoy suspense, intrigue and reading some of the great authors in, shall we say, 'excerpt' form; although each is a complete and interesting if not enthralling story.

I enjoyed and liked the fact that I could take it with me and read a story to conclusion in a short time and even though I would not recommend that the feint of heart do this...I read it as my 'bedtime story'.

It lead me to read other works by the authors presented here and to compare the styles of each of those in the anthology. A good solid read.

An Attractive Anthology.......2003-05-20

Ralph McInerny's brief but thoughtful introduction indicates that the contributors were "asked to write stories with a religious motif or background" and notes that many of the authors set their stories in the past. (Expect a few anachronisms, such as "kilometres", in these.) McInerny himself contributes a Father Dowling story, set in the present, as well as a novella under his pseudonym Monica Quill. While any anthology is inevitably a mixed bag, most readers will enjoy most of the stories in this volume, and will want to find more stories by some of the authors. The term "Catholic" in the title, incidentally, includes "Anglican" and "Episcopal". If you are attracted by the title, you are apt to enjoy the book.

I think this book was a waste of money... I looked through the recepies and there is nothing that I would be tempted to make... The recepies dont have a single name that I recognized. Its so disappointing.

I also have the Low Cholesterol/Low Fat cookbook, which I like, but the recipes tend to be a little complicated and take a while to prepare and cook. This book still has low cholesterol and low fat recipes, but they are much easier to make. It also contains many more recipes than the other cookbook, including a lot of pasta dishes, which I thought were lacking in the other book.

This is probably my favorite cookbook so far. The recipes are tasty, healthy and not too complicated. I already loved black beans and was happy to see many recipes which included them. The Lentil Mung Bean Soup has become a favorite at my house.

I have never been a bean lover but am a vegetarian. So when I discovered More Easy Beans and found so many great recipes, especially for appetizers, I was hooked. I truly believe this is the best bean book I have ever used. Some recipes call for meat, but of course, everyone has a friend who likes red meat. What I really found helpful was the recipes all use a can of beans or allow you to make the beans from scratch. All the recipes I have tried are right on with the cooking times. Other books I have used produce bean mush at the end. I highly recommend More Easy Beans.

Who knew beans were so versatile? This lively cookbook also provides a wealth of information on bean nutrition, varieties, preparation and availability. I consult it for exciting potluck appetizer recipes like creamy frijole dip and black bean tarts, exotic salads like white bean crab salad and adzuki fruit salad as well as everyday main courses such as chili (for which there are five variations) and wraps.

The recipes are usually quick, the directions are straightforward and the results are tasty and nutritious. This would be a great gift for the health conscious and vegetarians on your gift list!

Please Read This Book Before Buying a Pet Conure!.......2006-05-07

This is a great intro to Conures for people who are thinking of adopting one. It gives a write up on 25 different species of Conures. It gives a nice over view of what Conure species might be right for you by mentioning noise levels and habits like prone to chewing or feather plucking. It is pretty good in mentioning the responsibilites that come with bird ownership. I think this is important for everyone to know before getting a bird of any kind! The book did get into all kinds of care items to from medical to feeding to grooming and even some tricks & games training.

My favorite part was learning that some Conures will actually sleep on their backs in their food dishes! (HAHA) Other good tips included how to administer meds if you have a sick bird. It gave me some good basic tips.

Things I didn't agree with is not kissing your bird on it's beak and feeding it some low-fat dairy (I don't give my birds any dairy) but to be fair the book did say only a tiny bit because they lack the enzymes to digest dairy. As for the beak thing, I understand the point about human siliva being bad for birds but I certainly don't slobber on my birds!

Overall, I would recommend reading this book if you are thinking of getting a Conure, you just got a Conure and you need to know what to do, or you have one and just can't get enough info on them. It is somewhat basic for any of you that are already experience bird owners though.

Note: Consider visiting a local bird rescue if you are considering a pet bird!

Not the best Conure book at Amazon..........2004-12-15

When I bought this book, I also purchased Conure books by Anne Watkins and Matthew Vriends. GUIDE TO CONURE is not the best of the three, in my opinion. However, that said, if this is the book you can find then get it and use it. The book is a hard back whereas the others are soft covered books (if that matters), and Rach covers all the basics regarding food, shelter, health issues, etc. In fact, you could use much of the material in her book for any bird's care. She also includes a nice section on the various types of Conures and sections on Conure health that cover issues of concern to this species in particular as well as things to beware of if your Conure is a "free-flight" bird.

Rach includes a nice long section on cage selection as does Watkins. If you haven't given much thought to the cage you should. Conures can be messy birds and you want to buy something big enough to house your guy made of a substance he can't dismantle that is relatively easy to clean. This means you must think about the cage in terms of space considerations and weight. When the FedEX guy delivered my conure's cage he accused me of ruining his health. There are great cages available, but you should consider the cost of the cage and it's accessories when you buy your bird. Rach's book will help you reflect on these and other issues

GREAT book for a new Conure owner!.......2003-11-13

I LOVE this book because most other books on Conures put WAY to much focus on breeding, which is good if you are an avid breeder, but can be a pain if you keep, or want to keep, a Conure as a pet. When I was thinking of getting a Conure, I bought one book, it told me SO little, then I bought another, same stuff said, in a different form, THEN I found this book, and that made me deicide on a Sun Conure, I would recommend it to people who are considering getting a bird the most, it tells you what might happen if you get a Conure, it doesn't try to mask the fact that Conures are VERY high need birds, if there is anything wrong with it is that the author doesn't seem to call a bird a he or a she, its weird, but WHO(???) cares, sometimes when I write I make it them problems, and it is understood, so that didn't bother me, but I had to find at least 1 thing wrong with it, and that was all I could think of!

My family and I have two parakeets and two cockatiels; they are such energetic members of the family and are so loved that we decided to add another bird - you guessed it, a conure. When we brought our Jenday conure home (at 12 weeks old), we had little knowledge of how to take care of a "larger" bird - that is, until we bought and read Julie Rach's fabulous book. It is written in such an easy, friendly style that it's almost addictive to read - and add to this all the up-to-the-minute information on care and proper diet - it's the Conure Bible! We don't hesitate for a moment to say - GO OUT AND GET THIS BOOK!! You and your conure(s) will be glad you did!

This is a truly informative book. I was leary about buying this book. Some of the other books i bought seemed to be written for idiots, and i was bored quickly. This one answered all of my questions and went into hard to find detail. I highly recommend this to people who own other birds and are already experienced in bird keeping. It is not just the basics, but the odd things that apply to just Conures. BUY THIS!

This book is great for inspiration for the experienced papercrafter. That does not mean you have to be an expert. The projects featured are unique and definately got my creative juices flowing. This book is not for beginners looking for a how-to manual for hand bookmaking; there is an assumed understanding of some basic skills that are not explained in detail here.

Love this book. One of the best craft type books I ever brought. Does not show you the basics. In fact it does not give you much instruction at all (You could buy "Creating Handmade Books" by Alisa Golden, which complements this book well by teaching the stiches, bindings, etc.) "Making Memory Books" makes for a great inspiration book. One to pick up and flick though when you want new ideas. I have sticky notes all through my book with notes to my self about what I can do when I get around to the project. Its going to take me several years to get through it all.

Gorgeous photos, inspirational ideas........2001-07-03

I have never bound a book by hand and I really don't have any desire to do so. In buying this guide, you need not have any intent to create an entire book from scratch because the pictures are so beautiful that you will be more focused on creating pages to put into your existing journal or scrapbook.

I agree that the projects here are more for the advanced bookbinder, but I have found it fairly easy to adapt the ideas to my own skill level and have had satisfactory results. I am continually amazed by the level of creativity in both this book and "Creating Journals By Hand." They both have had more influence on what goes into my pages than on the entire journal...and to me, it's the memories that really count, not what they're packaged in.

buyer beware!.......2001-06-22

While this book is attractive, and the projects beautiful and inspirational, I want to warn anyone who is looking for accurate instructions to stay away! After a brief examination, I can give several examples of incorrect or unclear directions. For instance, on page 100, step one for creating an accordion book reads "First, cut a 5 1/2" x 4" (14 cm x 10 cm) strip of paper and fold it accordion style." An accordion book made according to these instructions would look like one of those paper fans you used to make as a child, not what is pictured in the book! What the author meant was cut a strip of paper that is 5 1/2" x (4" x the number of pages you want). Urrrrgggh! Or how about on page 52 when the author tries to explain the creation of signatures: "Note that the spines for the first and last signature should be cut differently, with a full page on the outside of each to be used for a title sheet at the beginning or for a decorative page at the end." Huh? Cut differently how? Is she really talking about endsheets? And what does that have to do with the spines? Anyway, inspirational: yes; accurate: no way!!!

This book is written with such clarity, love and hope. After surviving being shot in the head by her husband, Ms. Morris-Grant uses her total recall of the events leading up to and following that event to give readers a clear understanding of the confusing/contradictory emotions and circumstances that make domestic violence so dangerous and difficult to escape. A must read for anyone who is supporting someone as they deal with an abusive relationship.

A Man's Perspective.......2002-11-16

Ms. Morris-Grant has truly been through a MAJOR life event and has shared her experience with the world. She is a gifted writer and her story is compelling. As a man, I had no idea that what Ms. Morris-Grant went through would be considered abusive behavior. My eyes have been opened and I am ashamed. Buy this book! It will open your eyes. I await her next book!

'Whom Shall I Fear' is a Wonderful Experience.......2002-07-23

I am pleased to recommend "whom Shall I fear" to any and all readers. Ms. Morris-Grant reveals all sides of the story in dissecting her life from her childhood up through the present day in relation to her own self-image and her relationship with herself, God, and, most compellingly, her husband.
She is typical of many women who are abused verbally but who don't know what to do and are actually in denial about the existence of a real problem. Her husband is portrayed as endearing. I found that I, too was as surprised as the author when unappealing aspects of his character pop up. Ms. Morris-Grant strikes a balance. There is no glorification of herself and her actions. She is brave, she is strong, but one never feels that she finds herself to be infallible. Indeed, the flawed and honest portrayal of a wife and mother breaking away painfully, trying to identify the issues that plague her life, and to cope with them is done expertly. You feel as if you know a man who one could portray easily as a monster, as a man who has the chance to follow several roads, but who follows a tragic one. You feel as if you know the author extremely intimately, and she is also a regular woman who has several paths to choose from. She, however, chooses a path filled with light and makes the best out of what could be a devastating turn of events.
For anyone who thought that batterers (or worse) have horns on their head or have 'DANGER' clearly written on them, and who don't understand what goes on inside the life of a victim, here's a great book. to anyone, like myself, who has witnessed abuse of this nature, I say the same. In truth, there is no one who could not benefit from this compelling story.

Victoriously written!.......2002-05-31

This is an incredible story of courage, love and strength and a real page turner! After reading this book, I realized that others may try to victimize you, be you never have to "own" victimhood. Ms. Morris-Grant proves this point again and again in her story. She isn't afraid to reveal the truth about herself (all of it), and in doing so, she challenges the conscientious reader to do the same.

While I would highly recommend this book to anyone, I would ESPECIALLY recommend it to women who feel trapped in abusive relationships. Ms. Morris-Grant proves that you can truly rise above even the worst circumstances with faith, love and a continued sense of hope.

WHOM SHALL I FEAR A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF A BATTERED WOMAN.......2002-05-27

I find Lavon Morris Grant to be a very brave and trueful woman and writer. The book is very enlightful for all woman and men also who has been either a batter or battered woman. It lets people know that they are not the only ones out there with that problem. Its makes you stop and think that maybe this is happening to me or someone I know. The book is very helpful to let you know that it's not your fault and you do have choices. I really enjoyed the book and hope that every woman would read it and tell all their friends that it is easy reading.
