Customer Reviews:
another wonderful batya gur mystery.......2007-08-25
I've come to Batya Gur late in my reading life and have relished every one of her mysteries but Murder on a Kibbutz is, in my opinion, her best. In addition to enjoying the pleasures of Michael Ohayon's company, we're introduced to a wonderful cast of kibbutz characters that, like Gur's Holocaust survivors, will soon no longer exist in real life. She gets them down exactly right, along with the kibbutz dining room and holiday festivities and endless communal meetings -- she's even got the refet exactly as it is. In a patriarchal country where careers in literature are hard to come by for women, Gur carved out a unique niche of her own. I'm so sorry that she died at 57 and that there will be no further work coming from her.
Amazingly good depiction of a kibbutz.......2004-09-17
I like mysteries, but this book far transcends that category. It is really a study of the ideology of the kibbutz -- the communal, socialist philosophy that the founders of this movement held. They were highly idealistic and sacrificed a lot to make it work. But the idea has proven faulty all over the world, including on the kibbutzim. Nowadays, the kibbutzim rely on a variety of capitalist businesses to stay alive. In this book, the founders can't let go of the idea even though most people there, especially younger people, don't want it. The brutality hidden behind their attachment to the ideal reminds me -- in microcosm, on a far lower level here -- of the brutality that has appeared in all socialist countries as the ideals have failed in practice.
In addition to all this, it is a very good read.
A Real Kibbutz.......1999-12-21
Ms. Gur does an outstanding job of describing and playing out life on a Kibbutz. This is the first of its kind that I have read. The place comes alive and the crime is certainly realistic.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Kibbutz life or a good mystery.
An intriguing and educational mystery. . ........1998-10-08
Subtitled "A Communal Case," this novel invites to reader into the idealized world of an Israeli kibbutz, where a policeman who is an outsider must try to solve the mystery of who could have possibly killed a member of the kibbutz family. Gur interweaves lessons in social history and a social critique of the effect of bourgeois ideas on socialist ideals. I find the novel an intriguing yet relatively traditional murder mystery. Some people might get tired of the social commentary, but people who like to learn as they are entertained will like following the mystery and find the social ingredients essential to the resolution of the mystery. The book is quite suspenseful and thrilling. If you like this one, Batya Gur has others, as this one is the third in her mystery series based on the sleuth Michael Ohayon.

Very novel novel.......2006-07-11
Don't read this unless you :
1. Enjoy cats (preferably to the point of admiring them);
2. Can suspend disbelief (like I had to do with the first book);
3. Feel like bad guys really should pay for their crimes; and
4. The good guys deserve a little happiness; and finally
5. You don't mind staying up too late to find out what happens next.
My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed the first book when it came out (I would've given it 4.25 stars) and looked forward to this one as well. The novelty was a wee bit thinner this time because it is a sequel, but it's good to curl up with a favorite cat - er, character, like in this story - ya-know-what-I-mean? If you're thinking about reading this, buy the two books together and do it right.
I originally read the local press release and thought, "well, I'll just encourage this guy - he's done good things for PBS and I'm filthy rich anyway (I think I had just come back from South America, but never mind), so I'll buy his book." I did and really enjoyed it. Although this is 1/4 star less cool, I'm glad I read it because of that feeling I alluded to above: Windrusher had become a noble friend and I wanted to make contact again. I had tried using the universal "inner ear" shared by all cats in their sleep but apparently cats are exclusive about joining in, so I had to buy the book instead - and I'm very glad I did.

Life saving.......2007-09-30
The Gluten Free Bible is a handy dandy resource for Celiacs and their families and friends. It's all about education. The Gluten Free Bible is a wealth of information and answers the questions you didn't even know you had.
The Gluten-Free Bible.......2007-01-05
Great book! Very helpful for people who can't eat gluten. It is a life saver.
The Gluten-Free Bible.......2006-07-05
There are serious inaccuracies in this book that can cause a great deal of stress for a celiac. The section on medications with gluten is especially troubling as it causes someone who thought they were safe to worry for no reason. Most troubling is her treatment of the risks of cancer. Her treatment is both superficial, incaccurate and unrealistic. First she says that the risk is the same whether you maintain a gluten free diet or not. Then she says that the only thing you can do about it is to not worry about it. Her discussion of picking food out of a sandwiches is poor advice. In one section she understands the problems of cross contamination, yet doesn't seem to understand that picking apart food is more of a risk than using a toaster. Finally, her flip advice about how to avoid answering questions is ridiculous. Why not be honest instead of avoiding the questions. It's up to the person as to how many details they want to give. But avoiding the issue is not the answer.
By far the best and the most fun to read..........2006-05-23
I started with Bette Hagman's books and was under-whelmed, to say the least. If you want plain ol' comfort food, Bette is the place to go, but for my tastebuds and style of dining, Jax is the WOMAN!!
Don't appologize for your illness and don't say it's "just" anything. I followed her advise, recently and a 5 star, fixed price, 9 course dinner was designed especially around my needs! It was liberating, not to mention one of the most fabulous meals I have ever had. Everyone else had their goat cheese wrapped in a pasta sheet, mine was wrapped in nettle leaves. Everyone else had fancy herbed breads, I had fresh cornbread HOT from the oven. More than a few people asked why I was so "special" and my husband kept trying to steal my cornbread.
You CAN still live with this diagnosis and live quite well, I might add. Jax gives you the tools to do it.
Do not hear, do not obey..........2006-04-05
If you have a mild to moderate gluten intolerance, you can MAYBE follow this book's advice and be safe. If you have full on Celiac Disease, you will find yourself sick in a single digestive cycle!
Jax's information is lacking, out of date, and incorrect. I obsessively research foods, medicines, ingredients, and restraunts so as to be able to join my friends and family in their dinners, and my research shows Jax to be woefully incorrect. I'm encouraging my local booksellers to not carry this any more, and I encourage the discerning readers amoung you to take great care. If you want the feel good stories, read the feel good stores. Don't take the feel bad advice.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-10-04
This book offers a wide variety of cheesecakes. I have done about 10 and they are all good. Excellent... a must buy for even beginners!
Used these for my wedding!.......2007-08-04
This is the best book! For my wedding I decided to make my own cheesecakes, I picked 5 different ones, and made a total of 30 cheesecakes! They were such a hit. All of them turned out perfectly (except when I made stupid mistakes, like forgetting to turn off the oven, etc.) and I am now known by friends, family, and out church as "The Cheesecake Lady". In fact my church is having a fundraiser play and they have asked me to make a chesecake to auction off at each performance. When I asked what else they will be auctioning, I was told nothing. That my cheesecakes are so "famous" that's all they are going to have to auction off, and that people are already excited about them. I say all this not to brag, because believe me I don't deserve the praise, it is this cookbook that does. Follow the tips at the beginning, and you'll make beautiful and yummy chesecakes everytime.
Suspicious about review process.......2006-12-07
I did not wish to rate this book with a star but had to enter something... Can someone tell me why the reviews for this book are identical to the reviews for a different cheesecake cook book "I Love Cheesecake"?
I was just reading the reviews for the other book and then planned to compare to the reviews for this book and they're exactly the same reviews???
makes me wonder why I should even bother with reading any of the reviews on this site...and if I should buy any of the books since I cannot tell which one is a good book.
The delicious treat of homemade cheesecake.......2006-12-03
"Cheesecake Extraordinaire" starts off with ingredient notes, equipment, and more; I highly recommend reading the "cheesecake basics" if you aren't familiar with cheesecake-baking. The process is simple, but there are certain steps and aspects to it that are important, and it's the lack of those that so often leads people to think cheesecakes are difficult to make.
The cheesecakes are split into a handful of chapters: beverage-based (most, but not all, of these are based on alcoholic drinks and have a decent amount of alcohol in them), candy and cookie, caramel, chocolate, coconut, custard and spice, fruit, mint, nut, peanut butter, vanilla, and "guilt-free" (i.e., recipes using sugar substitute). Don't get too excited here--most of the recipes are in the first and last chapters, beverage-based and reduced-sugar. For some folks that might be wonderful, but I found it rather limiting. I can't stand the taste of sugar substitutes, and I usually make cheesecake to share with certain friends, some of whom really don't like the taste of alcohol. That severely limits the number of useful recipes in this cookbook for me. It's a personal thing, though--if you'd like those recipes, then those chapters will be more useful to you.
The cheesecakes we've made have certainly tasted absolutely delicious. There's a recipe for individual vanilla cheesecakes that's to-die-for, and a caramel pecan cheesecake that has a delightfully natural and somewhat subtle caramel flavor based primarily in brown sugar. Not a single cheesecake has disappointed.
That said, we have at times left off the frostings or toppings suggested by the book. One wonderful cheesecake recipe included a recipe for frosting that was entirely shortening-based--and I cannot STAND shortening-based frostings. They're just plain nasty. Often a cheesecake would be just as good or better without the suggested toppings; at other times the toppings work quite well (such as for the caramel pecan cheesecake, which is good either way).
I wouldn't call this the ultimate cheesecake cookbook, but I'd certainly call it a very good one. Personally I'd like to see more non-alcoholic and non-sugar-free recipes, and fewer unnecessary toppings (or a higher quality of topping recipes overall). However, depending on your particular tastes in food, your mileage may vary! If you love high-alcohol cheesecakes and don't have a problem with shortening-based icings and such, this may be the perfect cheesecake cookbook for you.
No more failed cheesecakes..........2006-05-01
I heartily agree with the past reviewers. I've owned this book for only a week and I've made 2 cheesecakes from it - Eggnog and a chocolate one. Both were topped simply with piped whipped cream and they were just simply divine, both to look at and especially, to eat!
For years, I baked cheesecakes with a water bath and I would still get cracks or the cakes would sometimes come out with soggy crusts (even with the bottom wrapped in heavy-duty foil). I finally said goodbye to cheesecake baking as it had been hit-or-miss. Then I chanced upon this book. No more of those darned water baths; very easy prep and great end results.
The only adjustment I made with the recipes is to bake my cheesecake for approx. 20-30 minutes longer than the usual 1 hr. and 10 min. (Even with my oven accurate according to an oven thermometer, not all ovens behave alike.)
Many of the recipes use liqueur for flavoring (which I like), so stock up on the Schnapps, Kahlua, Framboise, or whatever may be your favorite. Can't wait for this weekend so I can go at it again!

Customer Reviews:
Neither complete nor encyclopedic, but still a nice work..........2006-06-09
I was really hesitant to give this book only three stars, because it actually is very well-written and quite nicely illustrated. My main objection to the book is its scope, reflected in its slightly misleading title. In a well-intentioned effort to write a comprehensive one-volume reference, the author glosses over too many principles which a beginner should learn in detail, and skims over (or omits) some essential information on advanced topics.
As a broad overview of home aquarium science, the book is great; as a reference for either the beginning or the advanced aquarist, it will likely prove to be of limited practical use. Someone who is just starting out would do far better to purchase one or two of the many good beginner's books offered on this site. (If you're reading this, it means that you're checking the readers' reviews, which is probably the best way to find the most suitable books for your needs.)
Good, has needed info on rarer species, with updated names.......2003-01-14
I found information on fish that I could not find in other basic bread and butter books. While it does not have pictures of the more common species, those can be found in less expensive books. This is a book for the more advanced hobbyist, yet can be a great help for anyone with it's broad coverage. If you want a book covering basic species, go somewhere else. If you have been finding some of the rarer fishes in your pet shop that most books do not cover, then you will find this book helpfull. I do wish it covered more of the Corydoras, and included pictures for all the fish it describes however. All and all, it is nice to see current latin names used, and advice on keeping the rarer fish that seem to be showing up in greater numbers these days.
Complete Encyclopedia of the Freshwater Aquarium.......2002-11-12
I found this book disappointing. Photographs of some of the more common species that are available at local stores were not shown. If there was a photograph of a species somewhere in the book the description segment did not give a reference page for the photograph. Knowing what rare fish look like is nice but not helpful for most novice collectors. In most pet stores these exotic fish are not available.

So, so book, kind of old information.......2006-09-12
This book was published in the 80s, then re-published in the 95. Most of the information is kind of old. It does not have pictures for most of the fish listed.
Another thing I don't like is the lack of common names for the fish. It is one thing to have the proper name, it is another that a big portion of them missing common names. I would say about 60% of the fish listed don't have common names.
I would not spend more than $10 for the book, considering what you get out of it.

Helpful Book for the New Refinisher.......2000-06-26
From paint and scrub technique to gold leaf, Richard Kollath covers the simple to the more involved possibilities to alter a piece of furniture. This book gives detailed instructions and plenty of pictures to help the new refinisher like myself. I find his ideas and projects interesting, uncomplicated and worth trying. I also appreciated his concern for the environment and his recommendation for a more ecologically sound paint stripper

Is not a woman like a manifestation of chocolate? Is it any wonder that some of us experience cerebral illuminations and epiphanies when we see a beautiful woman? Is she not a chocolate covered sunbeam to remind us of the Divine Consciousness Who permeates all phenomena? Those of us who have been fortunate to know chocolate in all her manifestations evolve into connoisseurs of the sublime, the divine and the mystical permeating human love.
