Long before she started her hot new series about Arizona sheriff Joanna Brady, J. A. Jance was already one of the stalwarts of the police procedural genre because of her books about Seattle homicide detective J. P. Beaumont. Like the Brady novels, the Beaumont books are a perfect balance of the personal and the professional--placing the main characters in human contexts without making them seem cute or trite. The latest Beaumont, just out in paperback, is one of the best in the series: Beau wrestles at home with his own dying ex-wife and the vindictive former spouse of his best friend, while his office time is spent trying to discover who murdered a very nasty biotech executive. Previous Beaumont books in paperback include: Dismissed With Prejudice, Failure to Appear, Improbable Cause, Lying in Wait, Minor in Possession, Until Proven Guilty, Without Due Process.
Book Description
An explosive novel of betrayal and blood vengeance from the
New York Times bestselling author of Long Time Gone.
There are those who don't deserve to live -- and the corpse floating in Elliot Bay may have been one of those people. Not surprisingly, many individuals -- too many, in fact -- are eager to take responsibility for the brutal slaying of the hated biotech executive whose alleged crimes ranged from the illegal trading of industrial secrets to rape. For Seattle Detective J.P. Beaumont -- who's drowning in his own life-shattering problems -- a case of seemingly justifiable homicide has sinister undertones, drawing the haunted policeman into a corporate nightmare of double deals, savage jealousies, and real blood spilled far too easily, as it leads him closer to a killer he's not sure he wants to find.
Customer Reviews:
A Quickly Read Novel.......2006-08-10
The first Beaumont mystery I've read & I enjoyed it. The author develops her characters & story line very directly. Ms. Jance doesn't throw a lot of useless fluff into her work. Her descriptions are not repetitious & the novel moves along at a good fast pace. It's well worth reading. Beaumont is a like-able lead character
Beau in the Big City.......2006-04-12
While I'm a big Joanna Brady fan, I haven't quite been able to feel the same way about her other favorite protagonist, JP Beaumont. Beau, though a likeable guy, just doesn't ring true as a man, like he doesn't quite fit in his skin. His reactions to things seem too passive to be male, or maybe it's the way he sees women. JP Beaumont has a lot of fans, though, so obviously not everyone agrees with me on that.
Beau, an independently wealthy, high-rise-dwelling, Porsche-driving Seattle homicide cop, draws a floater one day when he's babysitting for a friend. The corpse is quickly identified as biotech executive Don Wolf, a man whose demise no one seems to lament. When Beau visits Designer Genes International, Wolf's employer, to get a positive ID, the company's CEO surprises him by announcing he will be the prime suspect, as he and Wolf were bitter enemies. It seems, however, that at least one other suspect exists, lovely young Latty Gibson, who was caught on tape being raped by Don Wolf in his office. Beau gets stonewalled in his attempts to talk to the young woman by her great aunt, an old money paragon who rather unconvincingly confesses to the murder.
The investigation gets even more interesting when Don Wolf's wife Lizbeth and a private investigator who had been digging into his past both turn up dead. Beau pursues the Latty Gibson angle while his personal nemesis looks into the biotech company that employed Wolf. Meanwhile, a couple of California cops do a little digging of their own, adding a few more facets and suspects to the mystery.
Typical of Jance, a mishmash of clues are floating around out there, and they all start coming together when suddenly, in a flash, that one vital clue comes to light. The meandering, distracted pace suddenly gets focused and goes into overdrive into the climax. The ending is a trifle too sentimental for my taste, but some people might find it moving.
In all, this was a pretty decent mystery, though it took a little while to engage my interest, as the story seems more about Beau's personal issues than a murder investigation. That's another one of Jance's trademarks, though. I'm sure this book won't disappoint JP Beaumont fans, and it wouldn't be a bad vehicle for drawing in a few new ones, either.
Balances humanity and logic.......2005-10-31
This book is a small cut above the average mystery/thriller, but its characters express more human emotion than normal, without waxing dramatic. Like a 1980s Hollywood movie, the plot progresses by sandwiching the character between the dumbly destructive legal process and the intelligently destructive evil of a killer covering his tracks, but in the middle, J.P. Beaumont is trying to enjoy life by doing what he finds fulfilling, namely, tracking down killers. The plot isn't far from believable, and the text, while plain, is artfully restrained, but it is the human element that makes this book stand above its otherwise competitive contemporaries.
Fair to Middling Mystery.......2004-04-07
Buried in all of J.P. Beaumont's personal problems in this novel is a halfway decent mystery. Between problems with his family, a child-services investigation, the insufferable Paul Kramer, his superiors in the Seattle P.D. (who seem to have forgotten that Detective Beaumont is a top-notch investigator), rush hour traffic, and the siren song of a MacNaughton's bottle, J.A. Jance somehow manages to shoehorn a triple murder into Beau's life. What any of it has to do with the blood-dripping icicle on the cover is beyond me.
Other reviewers here at Amazon have commented on how overcrowded the book is with Beau's personal problems, and they're right. Either the family crisis or the child-services subplots could have been eliminated and the story would be stronger for it. Either would have sufficed to add depth to Beau's character, but the two of them together is overkill. With all the extra-vocational content in the book, we are left with quite a few loose ends; very little of Kramer & Arnold's side of the investigation makes it into the story, and Beau changes objectives suddenly without having time to go back and follow up on earlier leads.
It goes without saying that "detective" Paul Kramer is going to cause problems, but for Sergeant Watkins and Captain Powell to heap on the grief makes little sense (good natured ribbing about Beau's transsexual fan club would have been appropriate; they should have at least heard his side of the story before climbing down his throat); it would be one thing if Beau was an underperformer, but the unceasing gruff boss shtick made no sense.
One thing that Jance does do well in the book is convey a sense of how different police work is from what's shown on TV (how different it really is from the book's presentation is another question). From needing evidence ahead of getting an arrest warrant to ballistics and DMV registration checks, Beau does a good job of doing the routine business of police work. If he could learn to do periodic "saves" of his police reports on his laptop, his life would be significantly happier (okay, not in a week with as many problems as this story presents, but on a less-hectic week it'd help a lot). Beau manages to do a lot of sitting and listening in this book, which isn't very exciting - even with handguns falling out of purses. If that translates into "boring" for you, then this may not be among your favorite novels.
All in all, I liked this book. It had a little bit of everything, with a bit much of only a few things. Even with all the sitting and talking I found it a quick read. Your mileage may vary, but as far as the book's conclusion is concerned, getting there was half the fun.
Not worth the time........2002-08-14
I started reading this book on a camp trip, and only finished it because it was the only book I had. The author confuses the plot line by the introductions of too many characters, still adding them 2/3rds of the way through. Also, there are 2 plot lines of the detective's personel life which have nothing to do with the main story, with one of the plot lines being totally unbelievable. I don't recommend it.

Short But Sweet Love Stories.......2005-03-27
Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I really enjoyed all three of these stories about being in love. They are stories about needing people, and stories about doing the right thing for the person you love. If you like a good romance story, this book is worth the money.

Thank You!.......2007-03-11
Thank you for writing this book! Every woman should own their own copy. Any home with adolescents should have it to read. This books covers being a woman from A-Z and it does so in a way that makes you feel proud.
Got to have it!.......2007-03-08
I just bought this this book to send to my daughter who is a freshman in college. My mom bought an early edition for me when I went to college, and I bought an inbetween edition as a 30 year old. This is an essential reference for women of all ages. I love that it has informed intelligent women about their bodies since its first publication.
This book should be in every woman's home.......2007-02-17
I just got this book and wished I'd had it in my teens, twenties, thirties, but thankfully now in my 40's I do. I bought two copies used. The 1984 edition and the 1998 edition. Now after reading the reviews for the 2005 edition I am going to get that new. The 2005 edition is the 8th edition and in 35 years has never gone out of print.
Truly a wealth of information and a treasure to have found. This is the kind of book you can flip thorough and start reading on any page and find something of interest. They even have their own internet site containing information about this book and related books.
The book is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs (including in the 1984 & 1998 editions an iconic one by Tee A. Corinne of a disabled person making love in a wheel chair).
The subjects cover every issue that a woman can encounter -

Incredibly useful.......2007-01-16
I love this book and I sent it out to all my family and friends as holiday gifts this year. I love that it shows many taboo issues as normal, because they are.
The only thing that upset me was that they never explicitly suggested that the reader use at least two methods of birth control. They almost implied that if your one method didn't work, you could just get an abortion. I felt that they should have been adamant about the two-or-more method particularly after reading how often a method would fail in every one hundred uses.
Excellent resource........2007-01-12
Provides a comprehensive, straight-forward, open-minded approach to all issues of women. Purchased to update my former copy, which I used as a resource when I taught high school students.

There are better books out there.......2005-12-29
I received this book as a Christmas gift this year because it was on my list and, based on the online reviews, it looked as if it would be just what I was looking for.
I am used to cooking with "exotic" ingredients such as umboshi plum paste, nutritional yeast, agar agar, and miso but there were ingredients in this book I would not go out of my way to buy given the meager amounts in the recipes.
I am speaking about hing, which according to the author is so smelly she keeps it in the garage. I haven't seen a recipe yet in this book that called for more than 1/4 teaspoon of the stuff. If she had offered a substitute, I wouldn't have been so turned off. There were also the pickled nasturtium buds (she did mention capers as a substitute) and dried tofu skins, which can be hard to find.
There is one recipe in the book for "Soy puree" except instead of soybeans, she has chickpeas listed. Chickpeas are NOT soy.
I'm a pretty seasoned cook (pun intended) and I really wanted to like this book but alot of the recipes just didn't sound very appetizing. For example, she gives you her recipe for one of her favorite soups: Kale and Bean Curd. Its nothing more than water, miso and kale. No depth of flavor, no aromatics, no complexity- just boring.
I think that this is a book for the unsophisticated vegetarian palate. I believe that if you enjoy more complex flavors and consider yourself a gourmet or a foodie you will be highly disappointed.
I think Joanne Stepaniak, Paulette Mitchell, Mollie Katzen and Deborah Madison do a much better job.
Not what I hoped for . . ........2005-05-08
Let me first make clear - I am not a vegetarian. Why did I think this book would be helpful? It looked like it would have some fun recipes in it and I rarely eat meat at home so I didn't think it would make that big of a difference. But a lot of the recipes call for ingredients that I would have to search for and that I suspect would be more expensive than I can currently afford. I am sure to other vegetarians these recipes - which do look very creative and (mostly) appetizing - would be well worth it. But I need to take lunch to work because I am trying to save money and was looking for nutritious ways to incorporate more veggies into my diet at the same time. Plus, I have to admit that I am a little scared to try tofu and haven't actually cooked cabbage myself and one or the other was in most dishes. I am sure this wouldn't be a problem for most people and hope that others do get the book but I was grateful that I checked it out of the library first as I was really excited about it before I got it. I just wanted to let anyone else who might be foolish like me and think this was a general-lunch-cookbook-that-just-didn't-include-meat-dishes know - not so much.
1001 Ways to Eat Tofu!.......2001-01-12
I've been a vegetarian for over nine years, but this book has given me LOTS of new ideas- including foods my 15-month old daughter likes. I really like how the recipes are unconventional- I had run out of ideas for eating tofu, but this book has encouraged me to eat it more regularly... Also- if you are into the Zone Diet, this book has many recipes that are fairly compatible (at least low in unfavorable carbohydrates)
Convenient time saving recipes.......2001-01-11
I really like "the Vegetarian Lunchbasket" because it is full of easy to make recipes that one can afford with even extremely limited funds. Boston Brown Bread was fun to make, and absolutely delicious. There are many bread recipes and ideas of how to make the bread appealing to children utilizing ingenuity. My favorite part of this book however is the Chapter 2: Fillings and Spreads. I find myself frequently eating cheese sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner and this book is helping me branch out. Peanut-Yeast Spread is pretty tasty, as is Tofu Salad. I look forward to trying the others like Tofu-nut spread, Sesame-Avocado Spread-and Vegnut Spread. There are many other spreads. I also like the fact that these recipes don't make a huge amount. It is perfect for creating meals for one person. Also, there are good recipes for meatless gravies in here, like Nut gravy, and Dal Gravy to name a few. It's a great resource.
Book Description
As handsome as he is talented, the Australian Shepherd has fast become one of America's most popular dogs, and that is no surprise to those who know him. Engaging and talented, the Australian Shepherd proves exceptionally intelligent and versatile. Admired for his natural beauty, eye-catching coloration, abundant coat and boundless herding skills (from geese to bison), the Australian Shepherd requires an equally active and involved owner if he is to blossom into the spectacular companion dog he is intended to be.
This colorful introductory guide provides reliable, up-to-date information to help new owners better understand, raise and train this energetic working dog. The book covers breed history, characteristics and standard, puppy selection and care, feeding, coat care and grooming, housebreaking and basic obedience training, preventative health care and showing. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.
Customer Reviews:
Well Organized and Presented, but Thin on Content.......2005-01-06
While many of the suggestions and explanations about this wonderful breed are consistent with other research documents I've read, I felt like there should've been more "meat" or text included on certain topics. In particular obedience training, feeding and the like.
Australian Shepherds are *extremely* intelligent dogs (far more so than most labs or retrievers for example - though I certainly love those breeds as well (and own one)). For this reason they have very specific training requirements if both owner and dog are ultimately to have a good relationship. However this book gave equally thin treatment to this topic as it does for others of less importance. I sort of get the impression the author said "well we can only dedicate x pages per topic on average" and then stuck to that, instead of allowing more pages for the really important stuff and skimming the more obvious or less critical topics.
This book *will* teach you something you didn't know most likely, but it will also leave you wanting more in-depth info. I'd give it 3.5 if I could....
Friendly Advice: while I was well aware of the breed's characteristics before buying, please DO NOT let your kids (or your own conscience) talk you into buying one of these dogs just because you've seen them catching frisbees on the beach or because they're so cute. If you do not have the time and space to dedicate to this dog every single day, you will wind up with a frustrated and destructive dog. Shepherds need to keep their minds going and their bodies going as often as possible; they are not couch potatoes like many other breeds of similar temperment and looks.
Also be sure to check your local Australian Shepherd rescue for available dogs before going to a breeder. You'd be amazed how many great dogs are out there already looking for homes. Don't contribute to the dog overbreeding problem in this country (more than 15 million dogs are euthanized every year in the US).

Same old..........2007-01-12
I bought this book as an infant caregiver and was a little disappointed to find out that it really was just the same old things we are already doing with our babies...maybe just with some slight twists.
Great book for new and not-so-new parents! .......2006-03-24
I highly recommend this book... Both, my husband and I, really liked the book and thought it's a great resource for new and not-so-new parents... The books has a wonderful selection of games and rhymes. Easy-to-read/search format makes your experience quite enjoyable!
I can't believe no one thought of this before.......2000-10-10
A baby game book that's easy to read, easy to carry and stays open on my lap while I'm playing with my baby. Hmmm. What took so long for this? I wish I'd had this for my first baby. I loved the games, I think the inside illustrations are super, and I really love the portable factor. It's a very durable book, too. And there's a clever index system when the cover is folded back that also makes this book remarkably easy to navigate. Great work!

How a culture approaches and depicts death says a lot about the way it faces life. In America, death is a fixture of pop culture, shown in fantasies that are violent but curiously detached from reality and moral lessons. In Mexico, death occupies a much different cultural space. Muerte! explores the lurid history of Mexico's fascination with death, starting with pre-Columbian mythological depictions of death as part of a constant cycle, to the Colonial period's unhappy marriage of native views with Judeo-Christian fire and brimstone, to J. G. Posada's remarkable turn-of-the-century engravings of death that were popular images in newspapers of the time. The author has organized a compellingly dark array of paintings, engravings, and photographs from the grisly but popular tabloids Alarma! and Peligro! Essays by Diego Rivera and Mexican scholars offer insights on the Day of the Dead, Catholic ritual, and the current lust for sensational gore.
Customer Reviews:
Looking for a serious treatment of death in Mexican culture? Steer clear of this insulting mess of sensationalism!!!!!.......2007-05-22
Based on the information I read about this book, I thought it presented a serious scholarly treatment of how death is viewed in Mexican culture, a subject which I am interested in. However, I found this book to be completely sensationalist and without an ounce of any serious (forget about scholarly) consideration of the subject. It also perpetuates negative stereotypes Americans already have about Mexican culture and they way they view death. It's all about pictures the author discovered in some trashy magazine and nothing more! So what? What's worse is how the author exploits theses photos to further his career as an artist (and not a very good one, I might add). The writing is sloppy and self-absorbed and the author is so completely uninformed about this topic (is including Posada and Diego Rivera all the cred you need?)it is almost comical. It makes one wonder if the editors were themselves corpses!! What a shame and a complete disgrace to an aspect of Mexican history and culture that deserves serious and respectful consideration.
Ai dios mio!.......2006-11-14
The typos in this book drove me nuts, but if you can get past them (If I can, anyone can.) it's an entertaining--and stomach-churning--read. Not too deep, not too thorough, but rather a light overview of the subject. Great to have onhand if you don't have access to actual issues of Alarma! magazine. Which most people in North America probably do not. Gorehounds will not be disappointed. People looking for "cultural enrichment" probably will be.
AMAZING........2005-03-24
This is an amazing book. The images are grotesque and disturbing, yet, they make you wonder how and why something like that would happen, and what the situation was. One thing that bothered me, however, was the fact that under most images (especially the ones that striked my interest) it would say, "Unidentified incident". Being as curious as I am, I want to be able to read about each picture, but in MUERTE!, do not expect to get detailed explanations of every image.
Muerte! Death in Mexican Popular Culture.......2001-11-19
.This book is a harsh glimpse into reality in the form of graphic death scene photos and commentary on Mexican death tabloids such as Alarma! Someone said the title was misleading - I do not think so - it says exactly what it is, and has several bloody photos right on the cover. It is not a sugar-coated day-of-the-dead book, although the subject is covered - nor is it meant to be a complete commentary on Latin culture. It is a study of magazines that have been around for years and sell millions of copies each week. The publisher reports on this subject but seems to be blamed for the existence of these tabloids in some reviews I have read. No one seems to mind if Alarma! publishes death scene photos or if people put stickers of peeing kids on the back windows of their cars and say it's about Latino culture. As far as intellectual content is concerned, that is a matter of opinion. I f you are familiar with any of this publisher's other books, then you must know they do not publish shallow material. This is a serious study about a serious subject and it's exploitation and is not for the faint of heart. This book is about death in Mexican popular culture and it's exploitaion and is a subject few have chosen to discuss in detail. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the workings of Mexican death tabloids and death scenes in general.
A scholar of Mexican art says AVOID THIS BOOK.......2001-08-05
...it isn't just that the crime photos it republishes are problematic, but the book has NO INTELLECTUAL WEIGHT and in fact, uses the essays by Medina and Fox (commissioned for another publication, edited and republished without their consent) to "validate" the author's egocentric/gringocentric visions. The TITLE IS TOTALLY MISLEADING and the text offers no ideas that are worth remembering. The first book I ever wanted to really really trash.
