2 out of 5 stars Bleh.......2007-09-20

I keep reading the Lucy Stone mysteries, hoping they'll get better. Unfortunately, they seem to have hit a new low. Anthrax? A secret chemical lab on an abandoned island? Evil scientists? I felt like I was watching an episode of "Scooby Doo" instead of reading a quality mystery novel.

I think Lucy needs to take a rest from her sleuthing.

5 out of 5 stars ...Lucy shines like a diamond..........2006-12-26

Small-town journalist, and amateur sleuth, Lucy Stone, can't believe it when, on Christmas Eve, she receives a letter from her daughter Elizabeth's college requesting that she provide them with $16,000 by the beginning of the year, so she can resume her studies. She has already splurged on holiday gifts for her four children, and beloved husband, and can't even contemplate how she will come up with another $16,000 on such short notice. However, when Elizabeth surprises Lucy with the news that they have been chosen to participate in a Mother/Daughter Makeover Contest in New York City, sponsored by the Cosmopolitan-esque JOLIE magazine, Lucy is excited to have the opportunity to put the bit of financial distress behind her - even if it's just for a short time. Now, as Elizabeth and Lucy begin their three-day stay in the Big Apple, Lucy begins having concerns about her last-minute departure, as well as the fashion-obsessed people surrounding her. Suddenly, Elizabeth has stopped eating, the result of watching a waif-like fashion show up-close-and-personal; and Lucy begins picking up signs that the JOLIE employees slinking around in their glitzy garb are hiding something downright ugly. When Nadine Nelson, JOLIE's self-absorbed fashion-editor falls ill, and then kicks the bucket, Lucy knows that something underhanded is taking place. She has seen the amount of backstabbing going on around her, and feels that Nadine's death was anything but accidental. However, when Elizabeth begins exhibiting the same symptoms as Nadine, and is rushed to the hospital, Lucy realizes that it's up to her to begin snooping around, in an attempt to uncover the truth about Nadine's death; otherwise, Elizabeth may not survive long enough to see the ball drop in Times Square.

With so few mystery novels embracing New Year's Eve, I was more than ecstatic to find that Leslie Meier's Miss Marple-esque character, Lucy Stone, was embarking on a mystery that would take her to the heart of New York City, just as the ball was about to drop. Unlike previous Lucy Stone mysteries, Meier has taken small-town Lucy out of her comfort zone, and dropped her smack dab in the middle of the boisterous, booming city known as New York - home of high fashion, sample sales, and screeching subways. Lucy, however, unexpectedly manages to hold her own. She quickly picks up city lingo, and learns how to maneuver through New York City in no-time. While Lucy is a believable, easy-to-relate to, down-home character, I did find it hard to sympathize with her daughter, Elizabeth. Elizabeth comes off as a spoiled, ungrateful, gossipy individual through the entire first-half of the book. She acts as if the world owes her a living, and expects everyone to feel sorry for her. Her personality seems to change slightly towards the second-half of the book, however, that may have something to do with the fact that she is not as prevalent of a character after the first 150 pages. I will admit, however, that even with Elizabeth's sour disposition, Lucy manages to shine like a diamond, and make NEW YEAR'S EVE MURDER a sparkly addition to Meier's enchanting series.

5 out of 5 stars A makeover weekend and murder.......2006-03-15

Elizabeth and her mother Lucy have won a makeover in a contest by Jolie magazine. They, along with five other mother-daughter duos, go to New York for a weekend. The contestants will all be judged, and the winning duo will win $10,000.

Lucy has just received a letter stating that due to their income increasing, they owe $10,000 towards Elizabeth's tuition that would have previously been covered by her scholarship. That would be a problem except that this year their income has dropped significantly. Lucy wants more than ever to win that $10,000 prize.

During the makeovers, the fashion editor is killed and Elizabeth is hospitalized. It turns out Anthrax is the reason for both. Lucy sets off to find who could have sent it and why. She uncovers a lot of misdeeds, including quite a few hot-button issues.

I really like this series. Lucy is a fun character. This time she is outside her comfort zone, and because of that I think we see a different side of her. I didn't mind that. I thought it was written to fit the context of the story and situation, as well as the fact they were in New York city.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next in this fabulous series!

1 out of 5 stars What has happened to this series?.......2006-03-01

I have read every book in this series, and just adored them. I could not wait for the next one to come out. How times have changed! Lucy has turned into a creep, to say the least. Her character in the early books was quite enjoyable - a mom of four, part time employee of the local newspaper, etc. Tinker's Cove sounded like a wonderful, typical little New England town. This book is set in New York, as Lucy and Elizabeth win a makeover. A very promising setting, but it falls apart quickly. In my humble opinion, Lucy has gone from an inquisitive reporter to a pushy, obnoxious, know it all. And she doesn't know it all. If she's not spouting off like some fashion expert to an "FBI agent", she is giving misinformation about animal testing. The author obviously did not do her homework when talking about cosmetics being tested on animals. She makes it sound like some hapless rabbit has to put up with lipstick being painted on, instead of the true process of the animals being forced to injest the make up or have it rubbed into its eyes. The ending of this book is so stupid I had to laugh out loud. And, if you are looking for surprises, don't pick this book. The killer was obvious from the beginning on. I hope the author hits her stride again, because I want the old Lucy back.

5 out of 5 stars charming holiday mystery.......2005-10-25

On the day before Christmas Eve, the Stones of Tinker's Cove, Maine, receive a letter from the college that their daughter Elizabeth attends stating that since their income went up last year, they owe $10,000 that previously would have been covered by a scholarship. The problem is that this year the Stone's income has dramatically dropped due to the economy; they don't have a clue how they are going to raise the money.

Elizabeth entered a contest sponsored by Jolie magazine that won her and her mother along with five other mother-daughter duos complete makeovers. Elizabeth tells her that all the contestants will be judged and the winner will win $10,000 which makes Lucy want to win more than ever. While they are receiving their makeover, the fashion editor is murdered and Elizabeth is hospitalized when she becomes ill. The causes of the death and the illness are anthrax. Lucy is determined to find out who sent it to the office so that they can figure out how the editor and her daughter came in contact with it. That decision almost gets her killed by a terrorist organization though not the kind one usually reads about in the papers.

Fans who appreciate the Jessica Fletcher books and Miss Marple stories will love this fine cozy amateur sleuth mystery. Leslie Meier modernizes the heroine, who is a likeable, believable and understandable character. The jealousies, uncertainties and in fighting between the workers at the magazine give the audience plenty of suspects who wanted the fashion editor dead. Leslie Meir has written a charming holiday mystery that readers will love for its' humor and originality.

Knowledge is power. As a Crohn's sufferer for 15 years, this book changed my life. I highly recommend it, not only to people with IBD, but to anyone looking to take charge of their eating habits and general well being. Proactive, not reactive!

I've suffered from UC for the last 30 years. This is the first time I have heard of any solid nutrional advice for this disease. I have been following the advice given--especially the vitamin suppliments and avoiding meat and fried food and dairy for the last 4 weeks and have noticed a difference already! I do need to keep taking medication of course but hope to reduce the dosage by April. I most certainly have more energy and feel better overall. I only wish the author had been more specific when he said he conducted interviews. How many people did he actually talk to, and what the break-down was between Crohns and ulcerative colitis sufferers. It does matter after all to know whether a 100 people said something or 1000 said it.

      4 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice.......2006-02-22

This book has some very helpful information about the balance one must maintain between omega 3 and omega 6 oils. I have been living with ulcerative colitis for 10 years now. It has helped me a great deal after only one month. I urge anyone with IBD to read this book on this balance or get the info. somewhere else. You will likely benefit from it.

5 out of 5 stars The First American Cookbook written by a woman.......2002-06-04

In 1796, a young lady named Amelia Simmons published her cookbook. While other cookbooks had been printed, they were just reprints of European works. All had been written by men for men. At the time, no cookbook dealt so well with the unique food ingredients available in America.

So, this was the first cookbook slanted towards female cooks and is the first book to show corn meal as a primary ingredient. Here you will find the first recipes for "Indian Slapjacks: or "Johnny Cake" which became staples during the following centuries.

Amelia also presented the first recipe for pumpkin pie, Indian pudding, rice pudding and gingerbread. Here you can find the words "cookie" and "slaw" which come from the Dutch in America. Many of the recipes show you how to cook classic recipes for dumplins, biscuits and fruit pies.

The most recent printing of this cookbook seems to be by Tresco Publishers and it was reprinted in 2001. This Ohio publisher obtained special permission to reprint a limited facsimile copy (all forty-seven octavo pages) of this American Classic.

The book I found has a facsimile copy of American Cookery from 1796 that is definately showing it was used often, complete with grease stains. Then, there is a translation into a modern printing font that is much easier to read. In the facsimile copy with Early American print fonts in which the letter "s" appeared as "f"... this makes the original harder to read. For example:

"By having an opinion and determination, I would not be underftood to mean an obftinate perfeverance in trifles, which borders on obftinacy - by no means, but only an adherence to thofe rules and mazims which have ftood the teft of ages, and will forever eftablifh the female character, a virtuous character -altho' they conform to the ruling tafte of the age in cookery, drefs, language, manners, &c." ~Preface

The dated language is amusing to read and you can glimpse a picture of America through Amelias eyes. The "spellings" of many words were of course different so they are not typographical errors. There is a glossary that explains terms like bullace (small plum), gallipot (earthen pot) and pannikin (small metal vessel).

This book therefore "contains" the first cookbook published in America by an American author and the translation of the work into modern English. It is a first in cookbook literature and therefore is an historic document you will want to collect if you are a cookbook collector.

Only two First Edition copies are known to exist. One is in the Bitting Collection of the Library of Congress, the other in the Whitney Collection of the New York Public Library. The book I have contains the dog-eared and stained copy from the Bitting Collection and includes a forward by Mary Tolford Wilson.

By reading her cookbook, you can imagine a young colonial woman cooking over a hot cook fire, taking care of her children and using this cookbook to prepare her evening meal. It almost evokes a sense of nostalgia for when things were simpler, or were they?

        Diet Bread

One pound sugar, 9 eggs, beat for an hour. Add to 14 ounces flour, spoonful rose water, one spoonful cinnamon or coriander. Bake quick.

An hour? Who would have the time these days. It is amazing! And I thought kneading bread was work.

You will also find recipes for:

        Minced Pie
        Bread Pudding
        Puff Pastry
        Roast Mutton
        Indian Pudding
        Meats
        Poultry
        Fish

My heart did beat a little faster just because it is so overwhelming how far cookbooks has come since this first American cookbook written by a woman and I was delighted to finally own a copy. This is not really a cookbook you would use as the recipes are not exactly easy to follow and don't always contain exact quantities of ingredients. It is more to amuse!

This cookbook will produce in you a similar excitement that you might feel if you had happened upon this book in a musty library or in an attic.

But then again, I read cookbooks in bed! ;)

5 out of 5 stars Pioneer in the kitchen.......2000-08-29

Amelia Simmons created the first cookbook printed in America, by an American, using truly American ingredients. Up until her publication there were no printed recipes telling cooks how to prepare pumpkin, cranberries, turkey, sweet potatoes, etc. People adapted the recipes in their English (or other) cookbooks, but I'm sure were delighted to have this guide to newer culinary items. The Oxford University Press reprint edition has a very useful introduction by Mary Tolford Wilson, presenting historical and cookery contexts for a better appreciation of Simmons' text. An added glossary is helpful too. I recommend this book for all scholars of foodways and culinary history. Lastly, let me say that it is a fun read. The conversational, although often brief recipes, which assume all readers know a great deal already about cooking, tell us a lot about eighteenth century assumptions about women and their domestic work.

3 out of 5 stars MIXED FEELINGS - TOUGH FOR BEGINNER.......2001-04-24

The strength of this book is the number of color photographs identifying an amazing number of fishes. The shots are clear and well taken. It is a strong, thick, well illustrated reference book. However, I believe this book is difficult to use for someone who just starts saltwater tank. First, all the fishes are listed in their scientific names (not the names given in the store). Therefore, you first have to look at an index table of "store names" which translates into scientific names, then look into the scientfic names' index table to find the page. It can take lots of time at first. Not very convenient. Second, there is absolutely no text about any fish - only symbols that give you information about food, environment... I guess that's why this work is called the "mini-atlas". The problem of using only symbols is that the information can be subjective and lack context. For example, the book does not recommend any trigger for a novice. If you have only fishes and no corals in the tank, why not? They are the least likely to die and will live long as long as you get other fishes they can get along with. In summary, this is a good reference book but do not expect to find much specific information in it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best resources for the marine fish keeper........2000-12-14

This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.

This book gives you the most for your money!

If you are out to collect gas-station artifacts this book will be useful in that it shows photos of a myriad of pumps, pump globes, petroleum product containers, and signage, along with price ranges. However, the display of 137 historic gas-station photos suffers from rather muddy reproduction on matte-surface paper that prevents showing the detail to be found in the original glossy prints. (On slick magazine paper, I've seen many of these same photos come to life. Why any photo book is printed on anything but slick paper is beyond me.) Despite this, the sheer volume of stuff and the text outlining the history of gasoline merchandising should be enough to engage the imagination of highway travel fans.

                  Book Description

In this extended interview, conducted in 1883 on Sourland Mountain, New Jersey, Sylvia Dubois--then nearly one hundred years old--tells her life story to Dr. Cornelius Wilson Larison. Dr. Larison wrote the original version in his singular phonetic alphabet. The Princeton Recollector published a normalized spelling version in 1980. This volume presents an edited and annotated version of the original text. No one knows for sure whether Dr. Larison's account of Sylvia's life is mostly history or mostly folklore. In either case, it remains a fascinating view of slave life and the life of the uneducated free black in the North during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
