Book Description
When Pauline Sokol goes undercover to investigate brokers who match psychiatric patients with treatment facilities for high dollar bounties, she suddenly finds herself confined against her will in a mental hospital run by nuns! Of course, convincing the staff that she's not crazy is like convincing a jailer that she's innocent, so Pauline decides to use the time to her advantage and continues with her investigation. Just as she starts to immerse herself in this strange world and make some headway, her hunky cohort Jagger shows up. When Jagger won't help her escape, Pauline knows that she's in deeper than she ever imagined and her only hope is the help of her colorful and "off kilter" new friends – her fellow patients. But when a crooked cross dressing nun winds up dead, Pauline knows that only her wits can save her from a killer that's committed to silencing her...permanently.

a fast read.......2007-08-21
Fans of Janet Evanovich's books will love this one. A wacky mystery with a slightly wacky heroine. I mean who would let themselves to be committed to the locked unit of a mental institution voluntarily?? But you have to give the heroine points for dedication to her job. I'm looking forward to reading more about the sparks that are definitely there between Pauline and Jagger.
Better than the first 2........2006-09-27
The writing is getting better. I don't think Pauline said "Ack" once in this book. A plus in my book. I actually stayed up to finish this one. Yes, Jagger betrayed Pauline in the beginning, but I got over it. She could have fallen into character a little quicker in my opinion, but I enjoyed the story. I think I'm over the similarities to Stephanie Plum and am eager to read the next book. Thanks to my friend who insisted I keep reading.
Betrayal, electric shocks, and reigning hormones.......2006-01-10
It isn't easy to write a critical review of an up and coming author whose first 2 books were thoroughly enjoyed. The third would have fallen into the enjoyable category too, however, I could not get passed nor could I find the humor in Jagger's major deception at the beginning of the book.
Jagger's mysterious past has been alluded to in the first two books. It has also been hinted that he became the man of mystery due to his falling out with Nick and something to do with his exwife. Whether they are related we readers don't know. But,Jagger has been lauded as an trust worthy cohort, a man's man, an individual you can depend on. Pauline has been delightfully portrayed as a quirky, independent, intelligent, attractive woman so, what happened in book three?
The premise of having Jagger betray Pauline and getting her locked up in a mental hospital, well, that bit did it for me. Why couldn't the author have used Jagger's powers of heated persuation to get Pauline inside the institution? Jagger seems to have a strong enough effect on her that he can talk her into all kinds of off-beat situations. Then the story would have worked for me. I find no cute comedy in a woman being drugged and betrayed by her so-called mentor/companion. I'm surprised that Ms Avocato would forget an honor code that military, active and former, are to live by.
If my disappointment in that wasn't enough you have Pauline. Yes, I know about hormones and phermones but as the plucky heroine would say Yikes! She can so easily dismiss Jagger's lies and deceit because he's hot?! I gave her character more credit. For those who have read the first 2 books remember Pauline's panic attack in an elevator? Now imagine waking up in a drug haze in a small room shackled to a bed, remembering how the person you trusted and for whom you were doing a favor had set you up. It's neither funny nor a very good recommendation of a "hero". It doesn't matter that Pauline's curiousity eventually keeps her in. Would Jagger have done the same to one of his brothers in arms?
As I said before this book could have worked but, betrayal is not comic and making Pauline such a twit to her hormones doesn't do justice to the character that was being so delightfully developed.
TERRIFIC! Can't wait for the next installment!.......2005-12-22
Lori Avocato's new release, ONE DEAD UNDER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, is a fun and sassy addition to the mystery genre. This third foray into the strange and wonderful world of Pauline Sokol, registered nurse turned fraud investigator, takes Pauline to the other side of the needle. Locked up against her will in a mental institution is nearly enough to drive her insane, especially when it's with the full knowledge of her supposed partner, the mysterious but oh-so-sexy Jagger. But with patients disappearing into the mysterious Ward 200B and then leaving covered by a sheet, Pauline realizes that there's more at stake than a few minor inconveniences --- like shackles on her bed and the occasional shock therapy.
In addition to tight pacing and a well developed plot, Avocato has done a wonderful job of creating believable, lovable, secondary characters. The flamboyant Goldie, along with his devoted boyfriend Miles, are truly endearing. They're both tough and compassionate and give the book extra zing. And for all you Jagger fans from Avocato's first two books, never fear --- he's back at his snarky but seductive best!
I'm looking forward to the next offering from this rising star on the mystery shelves!
Good but confusing.......2005-10-18
This is the 3rd book in the Pauline Sokol series. It is a cute, funny series and the 1st 2 books were very delightful. This book has way too many characters and it is sometimes confusing who is who.Jaggar is in this book more and he and Pauline finally kiss. But, the mystery of Jaggar is getting old.The 4th installment needs to shed some light on Jaggar or risk loosing its edge. Also, all the cross-dressing/gay thing is way over the top.The author must live in a large gay population. You just don't see that many gay/cross-dressers in most cities. Also,if Goldie is so gay how did he make it in army intelligence? Don't think so.
Book Description
Back to back they stand, eyeing their foes over the gleam of sharpened steel ... They are the two greatest heroes ever to walk the world of Nehwon: Fafhrd, the giant barbarian warrior from the Cold Waste; and the Gray Mouser, novice wizard, master thief and unparalleled swordsman.
From the moment of their fateful meeting, the legendary duo have adventured and misadventured across Nehwon, from the caves of the inner earth to the waves of the outer sea -- but most of all through the alleys and catacombs of fog-shrouded Lankhmar, greatest of Nehwon's cities. Their lives are chronicled in four books, of which this is the second.

One of the classics. . ........2002-08-27
Even though I consider myself a fantasy fan extraordinaire, it took me over 20 years of reading to finally get to some of the seminal masterworks, namely the works of Fritz Leiber, in "Ill Met in Lankhmar" and "Lean Times in Lankhmar". Although I would not consider these books among my all, all-time favorites, I am certainly glad I finally got to them, if only for their historical significance.
I think that my favorite facet of these stories is trying to decide which characters and/or stories of more contemporary fantasy were based, to some degree at least, on Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. My prime candidate is the delightful "Garrett, PI" series by Glen Cook. Mr. Cook's city of Tunfaire is every bit the den of iniquity that Lankhmar is. I'd also put the roguish, yet possessed of a heart of gold, Indiana Jones in this category. I could be dead wrong, and there are probably many others, but these are the ones that I was reminded of.
As I said, I'm glad I read the first two books and am anxiously looking forward to finding and reading the remaining tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
Bloody hell, man..........2000-10-04
Sure, Fafhrd & the Mouser are great, but whose bright idea was to change the formerly cool and moody covers to these hideous new affairs? Now they look exactly like any number of mediocre fantasy littering the shelves, rather than being distinguished as the groundbreaking classics they are. Bah, I say! A thousand times bah!
Adept's Gambit an underappreciated center piece.......2000-04-08
The story Adept's Gambit is one of the most moody pieces intheFafhrd and the Gray Mouser series. It contains a Lovecraftianhorror/mystery, a comical opening (in true F&GM style) and a thrilling climax. It is the element of luck that plays such a refreshing part in Leiber's stories concerning the two heroes. He can give them heroic qualities galore but he keeps them grounded in semi-reality by never giving them ridiculous Conan-like abilities. Lean Times in Lankhmar is, for my money, the funniest thing Leiber ever wrote and possibly his best piece of narrative in the whole series. I'm think it's quite a feat to write a story that both mocks and celebrates religion and throws in some adventuring fun to boot.
Stronger Collection of Stories than "Ill Met in Lankhmar".......1999-10-29
Except for "Adept's Gambit," a very early story by Leiber, all of the tales here are among the best short stories I have read in fantasy fiction. While Leiber's style of writing at time leans towards being a trifle florid, he nonetheless offers some of the most richly phrased descriptive narrative and inventive characters and settings one could find, and I think one would be hard-pressed to call any of his work tiring or lacking imaginative interest. These stories belong on the shelf of any serious fantasy reader, so I am sad to see they've gone out of print.
Good, but patchy, given the current layout........1999-06-21
I really enjoyed the Cloud of Hate - Lean Times..., and Stardock - The two best thieves... - and The Lords of Quarmall sections, of this second book of the series, more than the Adept's Gambit - and associated parts. All of it was good, but the lastly mentioned - mid section - was rather contrived and inconsistent in style, the thirty year gap in the creation of some of the linking parts not helping. Maybe if they had been placed more strategically they would have worked better in the overall scheme. Anyhow, the more appealing sections are important, since elements from them are used extensively as future references within the last two books of the series, Return to Lankhmar, and Farewell to Lankhmar. So these must be read.

Customer Reviews:
Very insightful.......2005-06-04
In response to other reviewers, yes, this book does rely heavily on stereotypes of male and female behavior. If you find you don't fit the stereotypes (and of course not everyone does!), then you'll need to look for another book. But for many (most?) of us, the insights and advice in this book will be very helpful. As I read, I was constantly amazed by how much I could see myself and my husband in John Gray's descriptions. Last night I had my first opportunity to try out his techniques on how to prepare a man to listen...and it worked beautifully! A situation that would certainly have escalated into a hurtful argument was diffused into a calm, brief conversation that left both of us feeling warm and loving toward each other.
Grrr!.......2004-11-02
Mars and Venus Together Forever is one of the most ridiculous, stupid books that I have ever had the gross misfortune to read. I probably should have expected what I got, considering that Mars and Venus on a Date left me cold, but I read this one anyway because the original Mars and Venus book had SOME interesting insights and I'm a sucker for a cheap book.
Anyone who buys into the stereotypes promoted by John Gray must be barmy. He exaggerates, overemphasises and blusters his way through the 200+ pages - probably with the best motives in his mind - but in the end the stuff he writes is uninspiring and insipid. According to him men and women are still ruled by `ancient' traditions which dictate that women are all do-gooder types who only desire to stay at home, chatting with other women and looking at flowers whilst men are all aggressive cavemen, grunting their way through their lives with zero finesse, a beer in one hand and the TV remote in the other.
I don't see how anyone, man or woman, could read this book without being annoyed. For women, the book is terribly unempowering. If you don't fit in with any of Gray's ideas about what a woman should be then you are labelled as masculine. I don't want to read a book which tells me that when I am at work I am moving towards my masculine side because being goal-oriented, competitive and efficient are male traits. It's all phooey! For men, the book is also offensive. John Gray says that men shouldn't express their feelings because it will cause a woman to lose her attraction for him. No, I don't believe that men and women are the same in all respects - there are gender differences - but in Mars and Venus these are distorted.
Overall this book is not worth your time. Underneath the waffle there may be some good points, but all of these are outweighed by the stereotypes.

Wordy, but accurate.......2003-06-14
Having authored my own book on meeting and succeeding with women, "From the First Date to the Bedroom, the Single Man's Official Guide to Success with Women," I can fully appreciate John Gray's work.
Whereas my book is a light-hearted approach to dating and mating from the male perspective, I will tell you that John does a womderful job in this more serious work. It is definitely worth the time to read.

Mars And Venus Together Forever. A MUST READ book........2001-12-02
This information is excellent in helping couples understand that things we say can be taken one way by our partner when we really mean something else. I think it will help a lot of people out there who unintentionally may be hurting a relationship while trying to communicate.

Imagine being able to prepare a wonderful beef stroganoff in only 10 minutes. Or a rich, creamy cheesecake in only 20 minutes. That's a complete meal in just half an hour! And it's what you'll be able to enjoy with your pressure cooker and 125 Best Pressure Cooker Recipes.
While the benefits of pressure cooking have been known for generations, advances in pressure cooker design have made these small appliances safer and more convenient than ever before. Today, North Americans are discovering that pressure cooked meals are not only faster (about 75% faster, on average) but also healthier since the food retains more of its nutrient value while requiring less fat for cooking. The result is that over the past decade, pressure cooker sales have continued to rise, now approaching 1 million units a year.
While the resurgence of pressure cooking is comparatively new to North American households, in other countries (from France to India) it has always been the preferred method for preparing moist and flavorful stews, vegetables, risottos, and soups. In fact, many homes in Europe and Asia will use two cookers simultaneously to prepare a meal.
With 125 Best Pressure Cooker Recipes you get recipes specifically designed to take advantage of what pressure cookers do best. And as you'll discover, pressure cookers are amazingly versatile. Sample from starters such as Braised Artichokes with Red Pepper Aïoli or Winter Mushroom and Barley Soup. Delicious main course offe

Excellent Cookbook.......2003-04-14
I wrote this review when I had just finished eating my second recipe from this book. The food was excellent, and the recipes were very easy to follow.
We have now tried 4 of the recipes and I like the book even better than I did two weeks ago.
This is a great book.......2002-09-29
When I bought a pressure cooker, I wasn't sure which book to buy out of the myriad books in the store. The reason I bought this was because it was the cheapest! It just goes to show you that something cheap can be a rare and wonderful find. The recipes are just delicious and very easy to make, even for a novice cook. I've had great fun experimenting on my husband and son and nothing beats a hearty stew in the middle of a Calgary winter. What used to take me all day in a slow cooker, now takes just 30 minutes, even with the cheapest, toughest cuts of meat. Buying this book has certainly made my meat purchasing easier, because I'm saving money buying cheaper cuts but not sacrificing quality in the end result.
The desserts in here are delicious and melt in your mouth. Don't listen to people who baulk at making cheesecake in a pressure cooker. Cinda's Layered White and Dark Chocolate Cheesecake is heaven on a fork. It took me 10 minutes to prepare and and exactly 20 minutes to cook, just like the recipe says. I had compliments galore from my husband and he doesn't usually like sweet desserts! I will never go back to eating store bought cheesecake again.
Some of the recipes I would never make - like the fish recipes. Fish doesn't take that long to cook and you're not saving yourself much time that way, but the ribs and campfire beans recipes are fantastic and if you like risotto, this book is for you. Vegetarians don't miss out either. Beans and lentils are provided for and the results are outstanding. Cinda gives you lots of information about the history of the pressure cooker and safety and cleaning tips. She also gives a breakdown of cooking times for various foods in the front of the book. I use this index a lot when I'm making things like beans and lentils.
I usually follow the recipes fairly closely, but I cut corners where I can. Instead of using chicken breasts which can be expensive, sometimes I just substitute a whole chicken and the end result in the same. And the great thing about a pressure cooker is, I don't even defrost my whole chicken. I just prepare the recipe as stated and cook the chicken for 30 minutes. And you would never know it had previously been frozen solid. It's soft and moist and just delicious. Try the Coq Au Vin. C'est magnifique!
I just love this book, so much so that my copy is well worn and slightly ragged and I've only had it less than a year. This book is clearly written and well laid out and has a wealth of information. But I took one star off, because there are only a few high gloss colour photographs of the finished recipes. More photos would have been nice but that's the only bad thing I can say about it. It's the best [money] I ever spent!
Customer Reviews:
New owners guide is useful to New cairn terrier owners.......2007-07-26
I purchased this book after adopting a one year old Cairn Terrier. I feel the book has been very helpful in giving me insight into the breed in terms of training, grooming and socialization. A bonus is the beautiful photos found throughout the book. I would recommend this to all new Cairn owners or those contemplating a Cairn puppy.
A Little Disappointing.......2005-01-13
Considering the status of the author's kennel, I found the book to be a let-down. It honestly seemed like a generic book on dogs used as a template with only an added Cairn-specific paragraph or two at most per chapter. In the majority of the text it looks like the words "the dog" were just replaced with "the Cairn Terrier".
I was looking for much more from this author. For example in the chapter covering health issues, the advice on routine care for a Cairn's ears is "ask your veterinarian". Gee thanks! Isn't there any advice you could print to educate me as well? My vet isn't a Cairn breeder or owner, he really doesn't know a lot of breed-specific issues and that's what I'd hoped this book could provide. The same with grooming. The book just says that the Cairn is the "lazy man's terrier" as far as coat. Very little is given about the unique care and maintenance a Cairn's coat requires except a discussion of a name brand of stripping knife.
The photographs are lovely and abundant. The text is well written, and good basic information, it's just not deep with Cairn detail. There are a few spots where the author's love and knowledge of the breed shines out, for example in the discussion of obedience that says a Cairn's response to obedience commands ranges from "no" to "make me" to "make it worth my while".
All in all, a book worth having on my shelf but if I was using it to evaluate whether a Cairn was the dog for me or as my only reference for behavior and care issues, I'd feel I didn't have enough material.
great book!.......2004-08-18
this book is really good. i loved the variety in pictures (and so did my friends). it has the right amount of information and is organized well. i got this book one day before i bought my cairn terrier which i'd been considering getting and the information here really confirmed that this was the right dog for me. i am also going to get a training book but for those wanting to know about this breed this is a complete book. i highly recommend this !!

MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07
My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
DON'T READ IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-04

MAGIC TREE HOUSE OLYMPICS
By KRISTIAN
In the Magic Tree House there is a boy named Jack and A girl named Annie. They went to the OLYMPIC . Annie went And took her mask .The mask she had on was to act like a boy .The guard grabbed Annie she said get off of me! To get more info about how Jack and Annie got home read MAGIC TREE HOUSE
My favorite part was when Annie took her mask off and the guard grabbed her and she said get off of me . I like this book because it has good vocabulary word and it had good details I had NO connection .
The 5th grade will like this book first grade will not want to read such a long book
Second through 5th will like this book because if they are studying on something they will learn about it
I loved it!.......2005-03-20
The last Magic Tree House that I read was Hour of the Olympics. I liked it because it had a lot of interesting facts about the early olympics. I thought it was funny that some people wore armor when they ran in races! I suggest that you read this book!
Take An Hour And Read This Book.......2003-11-12
The book you are going to read about is called Hour of the Olympics. Mary Pope Osborne wrote it and she is a great writer. This story is about the first Olympic game. The two main characters are named Jack and Annie. This book comes from a series of books, so this is only one adventure. The problem in this story is that Jack and Annie are at the first Olympics and no girls are allowed. Annie sneaks in and gets caught. Can Jack get her out of this mess? To find out you will have to read Hour of the Olympics.

Book Description
María de San José Salazar (1548-1603) took the veil as a Discalced ("barefoot") Carmelite nun in 1571, becoming one of Teresa of Avila's most important collaborators in religious reform and serving as prioress of the Seville and Lisbon convents. Within the parameters of the strict Catholic Reformation in Spain, María fiercely defended women's rights to define their own spiritual experience and to teach, inspire, and lead other women in reforming their church.
María wrote this book as a defense of the Discalced practice of setting aside two hours each day for conversation, music, and staging of religious plays. Casting the book in the form of a dialogue, María demonstrates through fictional conversations among a group of nuns during their hours of recreation how women could serve as very effective spiritual teachers for each other. The book includes one of the first biographical portraits of Teresa and Maria's personal account of the troubled founding of the Discalced convent at Seville, as well as her tribulations as an Inquisitional suspect. Rich in allusions to women's affective relationships in the early modern convent, Book for the Hour of Recreation also serves as an example of how a woman might write when relatively free of clerical censorship and expectations.
A detailed introduction and notes by Alison Weber provide historical and biographical context for Amanda Powell's fluid translation.
Book Description
KARATE CLASS SHOULD ALWAYS BE THIS EXCITING!
Karate class begins and students come together to practice their blocks and stances--from crescent kicks to front kicks to tuck roll stands. Dynamic black-and-white artwork of children bowing, kicking and sailing through the air contrasts with their brilliantly colored karate belts in this rhythmic read-aloud that explores the action and philosophy of karate.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Illustrations.......2006-03-06
The illustrations in this book are incredible. They come at you from unusual and creative angles. They are so detailed and realistic you would almost swear they were photographs. They are primarily black, brown and white, with the only splashes of color coming from the karate student's belts. It surprising the illustrator did not win the Caldecott Medal for this book. Hopefully he'll do another book soon and get the deserved recognition.
The author does a nice job introducing the reader to the basic history and beliefs of karate in the note at the end of the book but her poetry in the main section is content free and requires some rather strained routes to close out her rhymes.
This book would be a great gift for any child under 10 just getting introduced to karate.
Wonderful Verse and Illustrations.......2004-11-14
Karate Hour is a beautifully done book. It is done in verse, very cleverly, as the book goes through the karate class. The illustrations are breathtaking and look like photographs.. Although Karate Hour is in many respects, non fiction, it is also a work of art, where poetry and visual arts combine. Very well done.

delivers.......2007-06-24
this book is a directory of fun and unusual web sites, it will save you time in search engines, covers topics such as hobbies, music, games, the arts, information on movies and television, writing resources, etc. Nowhere in the advertising for this book did it promise to deliver the goulish genre the other reviewer sought. The front cover states "INVESTIGATE psychics, space aliens and spooks" and it does provide links to sceptic ites as well. A good overview for those looking to have some fun on the web and not sure where to start, or for those with specific insterests mentioned above, who are exhausted by search engines pulling up a lot of irreleveant stuff.
Title Misleads.......2000-03-12
I Found This Book Misleading From Its Title. But As They Say And In This Case Its The Truth "Never Judge A Book By Its Cover". I expected weird wild and wacky sites that cater to dark vampyric horrorish or possibly sexual sites, weird sites etc. And the weirdest site I saw was pretty mild a wicca site oooh. All I Can Say Is Im Glad I Got My Copy At A Dollar Store. The links are so boring I couldnt even read the site descriptions. Id pass on this one if I were you
