Penzler Pick, March 2001: William Kent Krueger writes the kind of novels mystery lovers love to read: well-written, both character- and plot-driven, with tense scenes and surprise endings. Purgatory Ridge is the third in his series starring Corcoran "Cork" O'Connor, half white, half Ojibwe, who is the sometime sheriff of Aurora, a small town in the North Woods of Minnesota. What is particularly refreshing about Cork O'Connor is that, unlike the portrayal of many private investigators and cops in literature, he is a troubled man with a troubled marriage. He and his wife, Jo, have been through hard times, and although there is plenty of love between them, those hard times often surface and impact investigations and decisions they make regarding their careers. As the story begins, Cork is no longer sheriff, but just has to help investigate when a bomb explodes at the lumber mill run by wealthy industrialist Karl Lindstrom. The bomb kills an Ojibwe Indian who, like many of that nation, objects to the tearing down of the trees in that area, especially those considered sacred by the Ojibwe.
In a parallel story, John LePere, half Indian, half white, festers. As the only survivor aboard the Alfred M. Teasdale when she went down in Lake Superior, he thinks about the death of his shipmates, especially his brother. When it is suggested to him that the sinking of the Teasdale may not have been an accident, LePere is pulled into a plot to avenge the deaths. Grace Fitzgerald, heir to the line that owned the Teasdale, happens to be married to Karl Lindstrom. Add the eco-warriors who have come in from other parts of the country to stop the logging, and you have a potent mix of high adventure and skullduggery. Purgatory Ridge is a fine introduction to Krueger and doesn't require that you first read the earlier two books. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
Winner of the prestigious Loft-McKnight Fiction Award and the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, William Kent Krueger has established himself as a startlingly original voice in thriller fiction. With Purgatory Ridge he cements his standing as a suspense writer of the highest caliber.
Not far from the small town of Aurora (population 3,752) lies an ancient two-hundred-acre expanse of great white pines, sacred to the Anishinaabe and known to them as Minishoomisag (Our Grandfathers).
Wealthy industrialist Karl Lindstrom does not have a reputation as a sensitive environmentalist, and some members of the Anishinaabe tribe are concerned about the proximity of the trees to his lumber mill. So when an explosion at the mill results in the death of a night watchman, it's obvious whom suspicion will fall upon.
Cork O'Connor, in the throes of straightening out his life and repairing his marriage, is asked by his successor as sheriff to help with the investigation. His sense of community obliges him to accept, but Cork has distinctly mixed feelings about the case. For one thing, he is part Anishinaabe himself. For another, his lawyer wife, Jo, represents the tribe.
Meanwhile, in a secluded house that overlooks the lakeside home of the Lindstrom family, a reclusive shipwreck survivor and his sidekick also seem to be harboring some resentment of their own against the industrialist. And it soon becomes clear to Cork that harmony, both at home and in the town, will be on the back burner for some time.
William Kent Krueger's precise and atmospheric prose, combined with his keen eye for the telling details of small-town life and his vivid sense of the land and seascapes of northern Minnesota, will impress and delight both his old fans and those discovering him for the first time.

Good Page-Turner.......2007-09-19
"Purgatory Ridge" is one of those books that grabs you at the outset and doesn't let go till the end. And you won't be disappointed. Krueger writes a gripping novel, set along Minnesota's rugged shores of Lake Superior. Not only will you get a sound reading of the local environment, you'll also learn a lot about the modern Indian culture of the region. Krueger's characters are vividly drawn and he doesn't allow for too much nuance. The good guys are very good; the bad, very bad. The plot has a lot of twists and surprises, especially at the end. And for the most part, Krueger eschews serendipitous coincidences to move his plot forward. This is my first Krueger book and I found it surprisingly engaging and compelling.
Fast Paced.......2006-04-23
The book did hold my interest most of the way through; it definitely was a fast-moving story. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the setting and the characters. It started out to be a pretty good mystery, but didn't deliver in the end, and here's where I differ from previous reviewers. The blurbs describe the book as full of plot twists and surprise endings. I didn't find this to be true. I figured out fairly early on what Bridger was up to, and it didn't take a genius to guess who his secret accomplice was. So much for surprise endings. In addition, I found the dialogue to be clunky and awkward at times; AND, I wonder, does anyone proof the book drafts before they go to print? Does the author get to see a proof of his book cover synopsis? I wonder because on the back of this book it says, "When an explosion kills the NIGHT WATCHMAN at wealthy industrialist Karl Lindstrom's nearby lumber mill..." As anyone who has actually read this book knows, it was NOT the night watchman who was killed, but another individual. Just another example of shoddy editing...
A New Master Storyteller.......2004-04-12
I read Purgatory Ridge and Boundary Waters over the weekend. I won't rehash the plots as other readers here have already done a great job of that. Just want to add my highest praise for this author. I can't think of one negative thing to say. The characters are human and realistic and the description of the surounding area is captivating. But most importantly, WKK's mysteries are also great stories.
good mystery; boring people.......2003-05-26
The bad guys were the most interesting characters in this story. The good guys are pretty boring. This puts me in position of deciding whether to continue reading this series as I don't expect the O'Conners to get very interesting but the stories are very well written with no idiotic endings. The main characters are Cork O'Conner, the ex-sheriff of small norhern Minnesota town who is part Ashinnabe (sp?) and his wife Jo, a lawyer who represents the local tribe.
This mystery evolves around the arson of a logging company and arson-related death of a tribal leader. Was it murder or an accident? Was he the arsonist or innocent? The story leads to the kidnapping of the logging company's owner's family and the kidnapping of Cork's wife and son.

Excellent read. Keeps you guessing right to the last page. Can't wait for more of Cork O'Connor.

Book Description
Harriette Mogul explains that this unfortunate weight gain, which impacts millions of women, does not have to be a permanent condition. With clear and understanding language, she illustrates that the added pounds are actually a symptom of insulin resistance. With a low dose of medication and a modified low-carb diet, it can be treated.

Too much.......2007-07-26
I was instructed to read this by a medical professional. I read it got a few things out of it but there is some medication that you are to take along with the diet and I do not feel that I should have to dole out more money for "stuff".
Caution about metformin recommended in book.......2006-07-27
Before anyone buys this book, he or she should look up metformin on the web, follow some links, and find out about this product, which Hariette Mogul uses with her Syndrome W patients. One site, for example, says that a tiny percentage of women develope lactic acidosis using this product, and 50% of those cases are fatal! Many people ought not to even try it. // Beyond that, the recipes are healthy and her dieting concepts unique and probably very helpful for those who can safely eat up to 12 ounces meat/fish protein a day or substitute sources. Her recommendations of 4 or more vegetables, 3 fruits, 3 starches, some fat, etc. are in line with currently respected healthy diet guidelines for women. The admonition to not eat cereal in the morning, even whole grain, might be worth trying. Some books by MD's state compulsive overeaters should have oatmeal in the morning and that women digest starch more slowly than other foods, so it should be eaten by noon. However, it's also the case that protein in the morning makes many people feel more alert; and after eating eggs, people eat less for lunch. Also, those who overeat at night may find an evening cup of oatmeal, or bowl, staves off evening snacking. // The concise suggestions for each meal, laid out in an orderly fashion on a few pages, are helpful. I recommend this book for reading and thinking about.
Solid medical info and great chefs' recipes!.......2005-10-03
Harriette Mogul's SYNDROME W is groundbreaking, highly informative - and also fun. Her gourmet recipes make your mouth water, motivating you to start cooking her carb-modified meals right away. SYNDROME W is an absolutely unique mix of solid medical information, gourmet chefs' healthy recipes, and your loving aunt's gentle understanding of your resistance to exercise as she helps reorganize your kitchen for your new way of cooking and eating!
Mogul is an endocrinologist who, in her own research, has discovered that many women who gain a substantial weight in their middle years are suffering from a medical condition that is virtually never tested for. Such women cannot lose weight even with dedicated diet and exercise - until a medication called metformin is added to their regime. With metformin and proper eating habits, Mogul's patients are finally able to lose excess poundage. Because the proper medical tests are not widely done, Mogul lists precise instructions on two pages so the reader can easily photocopy them for her doctor, along with citations to the scientific literature supporting the efficacy of metformin. While the medical information derives from Mogul's academic work, her writing in this book is light, concise, and perfectly clear.
Mogul gives all kinds of unique practical information about how to reorganize your eating habits - e. g., travel and restaurant tips, and which ready-prepared low-carb products in your grocery store are truly tasty and effective (and her grande skim-milk latte tip, along with the scientific explanation of its effectiveness!). The last 100 pages of SYNDROME W are actually a gourmet cookbook full of "Delicious Recipes from Great Chefs." (Typical of Mogul's generous manner, she even includes a bio of each of her chefs.)

Book Description
The motto at the Comfort Diner is a simple one: “Time to eat good food!”
And for Ira Freehof, owner of New York’s Comfort Diner, “good food” means fresh interpretations of classic American comfort food. Here he shares all the recipes that lure hungry types of all stripes into the cozy, bright booths of his restaurants, which have earned best-diner awards from Time Out New York and The Resident. Diner-inspired standards from Mom’s Meatloaf to perfect Macaroni and Cheese are covered, but so are newer dishes that have been eagerly adopted into the pantheon of American culinary favorites: Warm Taco Salad, Black Bean Quesadillas, Chinese Chicken Salad, and Three-Bean Vegetarian Chili. With recipes that both hearken back to the golden age of the diner and update the classics for today’s healthful living, this comfort food is truly family food that everyone will enjoy.
Because it’s always time to eat good food, The Comfort Diner Cookbook has irresistible recipes to fuel you from morning to midnight: substantial breakfasts (from Breakfast Burritos to Berry-Stuffed French Toast); sandwiches—traditional and with a twist (featuring the Cobb Salad Sandwich and the Thanksgiving-on-a-Roll Turkey, Cheddar, and Cranberry Melt); an entire delectable chapter devoted to grilled cheese—and another to thick milkshakes; a healthy helping of scrumptious salads; anytime small plates (such as Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread and Shrimp with Bloody Mary Cocktail Sauce); satisfying big plates (including the ultimate Comforting Chicken Potpie); and divine desserts (with a heavenly Banana Cream Pie). Accompanying these surefire recipes is a wealth of lore about America’s favorite homestyle dishes and foodstuffs, along with a side of diner trivia and nostalgia, making this book as fun to read as it is rewarding to use.

comfort food at it's best!.......2007-08-09
We have eaten at the Comfort Diner several times on our trips to NYC. This book has the best of the menu choices. I love the cookbook!
Comfort Food at its Best.......2007-05-16
If you aren't able to get to New York City to try some of Ira Freehof's tasty comfort food in person, The Comfort Diner cookbook is the second best thing to that round trip ticket (and a fraction of the cost). These are classic comfort food recipes, updated with fresh, wholesome ingredients. There are recipes for beginner cooks and gourmet chefs alike, each of them easy-to-read and foolproof. My 11-year-old daughter loves to make the Blueberry Muffins (her brothers love to eat them). I am an experienced cook who has tried the Chicken Pot Pie and Red Flannel Hash, adding a few touches of my own. Whether you aren't used to spending much time in the kitchen, or you're the next Top Chef contestant, there is something inspirational and tasty in this cookbook for you. Bon Appetit!

Comfort Diner Cookbook is a classic!.......2007-01-18
Wonderful easy to prepare, home-cooked style recipes with delightful 50's style artwork with plenty of helpful tips randomly placed within the 160 pages. The chapter style layout makes it easy to read & the print (font size) is nice sized. I would have rated it 5 STARS, except it contains no pictures of the recipes. Bought one for my daughter-in-law and one for myself! Very satisfied!
Comfort Diner Cookbook.......2006-08-03
I visited the Comfort Diner when I was visiting NY recently and really enjoyed the pancakes and vanilla shake (best ever). We have only tried the pancake and french toast recipes in this book but they were both great. The snippets of info along the way are interesting and so are some of the twists in the recipes. I have bought 3 more copies as gifts.

Yummy!.......2006-02-26
I bought this cookbook specifically for the peanut butter cookie recipe, which is fabulous! The blueberry muffins are great too. Honestly, those are the only two recipes I've tried but they are both great.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite books about dogs.......2003-08-20
I've read this book cover to cover more than once, and laughed out loud each time. The authors' love of dogs shines through every page, and the humor is razor sharp and based on experience. For anyone researching dogs as a first step toward bringing home a canine companion -- purebred or mixed -- this book is a great resource (and great entertainment too).
Some good points but didn't care for it.......2003-08-05
I like the point made that non-pure bred dogs are wonderful and worth saving. However some of the "catalogue" of mixes was ridiculous. Example: comments on "chow-sharpei" mix and "chow" mixes was obviously due to the fact that the author does not like either breed. I have a chow/samoyed mix who is absolutely wonderful - got the best of both breeds. It would have been more fair to catalogue as well the good points of the breed and perhaps explain more as to why certain breeds can have negative points (poor breeding, socialization & training for example).
Mutt pride, but in a nasty way.......2003-04-03
This was an enjoyable book, but not completely a positive experience. I currently have three dogs (two mutts, one purebred), and have fostered many - all different kinds, both mixed and pure. I've loved all of them dearly, but books like "Mutts" imply that one can only love one or the other - purebred or mutt. They're all dogs, all individuals. I don't own a breed, I own my Beau, a collie - a breed that gets a lot of negative attention in this book.
Some of the passages about purebred dogs were downright offensive. A Golden/collie mix is described as "Valley girl meets Forrest Gump" in a section discussing temperaments of mixed breed dogs. There was much space wasted dissing purebreds in like fashion. I guess it's supposed to be humorous, but I found it nasty-tempered and alienating.
Yes, there are German Shepherds that are skittish and shelties that are hyperactive yappers, but this book makes it sound like every purebred dog is a degenerate freak and only mutts are "real" dogs. While I understand the need for a book that promotes mutts as the great pets they are, I wish it didn't have to be at the expense of purebred dogs and those who choose to own them.
My dogs.........2002-05-03
I always have to describe my dogs in terms of purebreds. This has never sat well with me. My dog is a mutt. She is medium sized, fluffy and white. This satisfies none of her admirers - she has to be part border collie or australian shepherd in order to slake their curiousity. What is is it with people, why does breeding matter? Yep, she probably has some border collie in her, but she cannot/will not herd (she is stubborn) and hates chasing balls and frisbees - she ain't no stinking border collie.
Oh well, it is nice to have this book for some mutt pride. Yeah, there is not a purebred in my house - but I have this in common with most american families! My dog is known as 'white dog' in this book - and that's enough for me!
Mutts have Gutts.......2001-04-19
This is a well written book about the intelligence possessed by mixed-breed dogs. They are courageous animals that are protective of their owners and eager to please. After reading the inspiring stories in this wonderful book, I will only own mutts in the future. Delightful Book!

Terrific book!.......2001-10-06
This is a book I find myself reading again and again just because it's so entertaining. The breed information is accurate, as would be expected from Brian Kilcommons, but the presentation is often "howlingly," laugh-out-loud funny. This is a great book for anyone who loves dogs, and mutts in particular.

Good book for amateur non-woodworkers.......2007-03-28
-
This is another in the generally terrific Black & Decker Portable Workshop series. Many of these books, including this one, deal with construction of sturdy wood furniture and/or accessories using mostly hand tools and lumber.
All these books contain a basic introduction to the tools, materials and techniques. They also contain many full-color photos of the finished projects and several steps in the construction, as well as exploded drawings and materials/cutting list.
Keep in mind that this is NOT a "fine-woodworking" book! You are not going to build any "heirlooms" (although if you take your time, some could be darn good). Many of the projects in this book are too simple for that, made mostly from "1-by" and "2-by" lumber, using non-power hand tools, circular saw, jig saw, router, power sander and drill. (You will find a power miter saw useful, but not absolutely necessary. Likewise, for some projects, a table saw or band saw could come in handy, but are not required.) But if that's what you're looking for, it's a great project book.
The projects in this book include:
1) card table
2) hallway bookcase
3) tile-top coffee table
4) china cabinet
5) armoire
6) portable workbench
7) mirrored display shelf
8) bathroom drying rack
9) nesting office
10) behind-the-sofa bookcase
11) computer stand
12) table/chair
13) corner bar
14) coffee cabinet
15) corner display stand
16) folding table
17) door-hung ironing center
18) exer-tainment center
19) pop-up wine bar
20) gateleg table
Anyone with the ability to work with basic hand tools and simple hand-held power tools should have no difficulty completing any of the projects in this book.
IMPORTANT: Some of the projects in this book also appear in other books in the series. If you are considering this book, you might want to look at the projects listed in the other books in the series. You might find that one book contains several projects you find interesting from this book, but includes an extra interesting project or two.
You won't go wrong with this book. But check the others in the series first to make sure you're getting the best one to suit your interests.
Now go build something... ;-)

Gunnar Myrdal belongs in a category with Alexis de Tocqueville and J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur--non-American authors who have written essential works on the American character. In 1954, the Swedish-born Myrdal delivered this massive (and massively influential) book on the status of American blacks. It is a somewhat depressing account of segregation and lynch law, but it is also full of optimism. Myrdal's hopefulness appears to have been justified. Black Americans still face many problems, but their place in American life has much improved, thanks to a near-complete revolution in racial attitudes among whites and a highly successful civil rights movement. If we learn about the present by reading about the past, then An American Dilemma has much to teach us today, especially about how far the United States has come.
Customer Reviews:
Monumental - but not without flaws.......2000-10-20
The importance of this book cannot be overstated - it is still the most exhaustive effort to date to document every aspect of the black American condition, from medical history to birth rates to the black church and social clubs. Myrdal systematically shreds the institutions of segregation and racial indocrination. As for providing groundwork for changing these systems, however, he falls short. Myrdal is too vague in his theories of white morality and causation of black poverty and never draws solid conclusions. There is also no mention of actual contact or conversation with any black people - Myrdal fails to see blacks as much more than a palimpsest of the white experience. I think he would have done better to push the white psyche aside and interact more with the focus of his study. Ralph Ellison noted, "Can a people live and develop over three hundred years simply by _reacting_? Are American Negroes simply the creation of white men, or have they at least helped to create themselves out of what they found around them?"
Thoughtful and Thought-Provoking.......2000-10-12
Writing against the backdrop of WWII, Myrdal confronted the contradiction between the US belief "All men are created equal" and the reality that African-Americans earned less for the same work as whites, lived in atrocious conditions, died at an earlier age. He argues that if Americans had believed that God made some poor, others rich, this contradiction could have been acceptable. But because Americans believed "all men are equal," the fact that African-Americans were manifestly living in worse conditions lead US society to seek a justification in the doctrine of racial inferiority. This book grasped the contradiction in US society, and foresaw that change was imminent, but Myrdal did not see that it was those under-educated and overworked African-American men and women themselves who would form the backbone of Civil Rights Movement. He expected that the white elites in power would have to change in order for the situation of African-Americans to improve. One reason this book is relevant today is Myrdal's theory of cumulative causation, which suggests that government intervention will be necessary to reverse the tendency of white race prejudice to maintain a low standard of living for African-Americans. In days where economic theories attacking the logic of affirmative action are widespread, here is an eloquent statement of the logic behind the original ideas for affirmative action.
Myrdal's Analysis Too Important to be Ignored.......1998-11-05
During the long course of our studies of social trends that undermine our collective humanity, we have frequently come across significant research studies that provide critical keys to our understanding. Such is the case with AN AMERICAN DILEMMA: THE NEGRO PROBLEM AND MODERN DEMOCRACY. The Swedish researcher Gunnar Myrdal, under a grant sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation, produced this landmark study which was published in 1944 by Harper and Row publishers. Some fifty years after its publication AN AMERICAN DILEMMA still stands as perhaps the most comprehensive, and unsettling, analysis of America's relationship with its African members. At nearly 1500 pages, including footnotes and index, Myrdal's study is awesomely comprehensive. Disturbing revelation follows revelation as the scientist, trained in economics, explores every imaginable aspect of Negro life and at various times even proposes methods by which America might eventually relieve itself of its longstanding "problem." From the beginning of this country's history, at the heart of America's ethnic crisis lies the very real potential of sustained and systematic planning to manage Blacks as a material resource as opposed to human beings in all their potential. I will take this thought further to state that Myrdal's study stands as a virtual blueprint for a contemporary campaign to undermine the aspirations of the Black citizenry. The ultimate form of this repression can only be described as systematic genocide--by every definition of the word. By Myrdal's own words, his study is quite thorough, encompassing not only every aspect of Negro life but examining the varied attitudes of the dominant white majority.
Book Description
Between 1877 and 1930--years rife with tensions over citizenship, suffrage, immigration, and "the Negro problem"--African American activists promoted an array of strategies for progress and power built around "racial destiny," the idea that black Americans formed a collective whose future existence would be determined by the actions of its members. In Righteous Propagation, Michele Mitchell examines the reproductive implications of racial destiny, demonstrating how it forcefully linked particular visions of gender, conduct, and sexuality to collective well-being.
Mitchell argues that while African Americans did not agree on specific ways to bolster their collective prospects, ideas about racial destiny and progress generally shifted from outward-looking remedies such as emigration to inward-focused debates about intraracial relationships, thereby politicizing the most private aspects of black life and spurring race activists to calcify gender roles, monitor intraracial sexual practices, and promote moral purity. Examining the ideas of well-known elite reformers such as Mary Church Terrell and W. E. B. DuBois, as well as unknown members of the working and aspiring classes, such as James Dubose and Josie Briggs Hall, Mitchell reinterprets black protest and politics and recasts the way we think about black sexuality and progress after Reconstruction.

Book Description
Negro Intellect... A guide for young black males is a humorously candid and staright to the point guide directed at America's urban youth. Negro Intellect is providing help for today and hope for tomorrow.
Book Description
World War I opened new opportunities for blacks. Many jobs were left behind by the troops in France, and the northern industries geared up for war production needed thousands of new workers. This book includes general background, many descriptive tables, and reports from eleven individual states.
Book Description
One hundred years ago, African Americans looked forward to the new twentieth century with mixed feelings of pride and discouragement. While they could point to the tremendous progress many of them had made since the end of slavery under the dynamic leadership of Booker T. Washington, the majority of White Americans showed little willingness to accept Blacks as equals, and in the South segregation was practically institutionalized through the recently enacted Jim Crow laws.
It was in these uncertain times that this compelling collection of articles by leading African Americans was published to address what was then commonly known as "the Negro problem." The collection begins with a piece by Booker T. Washington on the value and purpose of stressing industrial education for Black Americans. This is followed by the now famous article by W.E.B. DuBois called "The Talented Tenth" in which he argues for the cultivation of an elite corps of Black intellectuals who would then work to uplift the African American masses. Other contributors discuss the disenfranchisement of Blacks, the broader subject of the people of color, and outstanding representative Black Americans.
Issued in the centennial year of its publication, this new edition of a valuable classic is complemented by an informative foreword by Bernard R. Boxhill, professor of philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
