Book Description

In this masterpiece of psychological suspense, Italian Police Commissioner Aurelio Zen is dispatched to investigate the kidnapping of Ruggiero Miletti, a powerful Perugian industrialist. But nobody much wants Zen to succeed: not the local authorities, who view him as an interloper, and certainly not Miletti's children, who seem content to let the head of the family languish in the hands of his abductors -- if he's still alive.

Was Miletti truly the victim of professionals?  Or might his kidnapper be someone closer to home: his preening son Daniele, with his million-lire wardrobe and his profitable drug business?  His daughter, Cinzia, whose vapid beauty conceals a devastating secret? The perverse Silvio, or the eldest son Pietro, the unscrupulous fixer who manipulates the plots of others for his own ends? As Zen tries to unravel this rat's nest of family intrigue and official complicity, Michael Dibdin gives us one of his most accomplished thrillers, a chilling masterpiece of police procedure and psychological suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Do start here!.......2004-06-08

First in Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series.

A terrific start to an extremely well-written detective series, set in various places in Italy (this one in Perugia). It is a very good idea to start at the beginning and read the series in order, unless you don't mind obtaining mosaic-like insights into the motivations, psychology and personal relationships of the almost-but-not-quite 'anti-hero' Zen. The outcomes of previous cases are discussed in subsequent books, which could prove to spoil earlier ones for a non-sequential reader.

Dibdin conveys the Italian settings well - you can almost feel yourself walking alongside Zen through the piazzas of Rome and the precipitous streets of Perugia.

Zen is not another Commissario Brunetti (Donna Leon's equally as engaging Venetian detective). Zen's psychology is much darker, his demons more active, his personality more brittle and his relationships more fragile. Above all, his morality is more able to cope with (and indulge in) matters not always just 'shady', but sometimes downright illegal. Dibdin does successfully capture, however, the Italian body politic with both its unbending public bureaucracy and more flexible private state.

For an intelligent police procedural, with well-drawn characters, and a wonderful sense of place, I heartily recommend Ratking as a wonderful series opener.

3 out of 5 stars What is the Ratking?.......2002-11-15

Many readers would take the word at face value, and assume a ratking is in fact a king rat. This is far from the case. A ratking is created when too many rats live together in a small space, and their tails become intertwined. They create a new, living organism where all must work together for the survival of all.

The Italian Miletti family has created such a world. The four children of the senior member, who has been kidnapped, must contrive together to protect their interests both against each other and the outside world - particularly inspector Aurelio Zen, newly arrived from Rome to solve the puzzle. But when Miletti is found murdered, after the kidnappers have received their ransom, the ratking must somehow adapt to ensure its survival, and Zen must figure out its secrets to solve the mystery.

While the premise of this book was interesting enough, and the depictions of Italian life in Perugia were well-done, I didn't particularly enjoy the writing style of the book, nor the casual ending to the story. I've tried several of Dibdain's books, and don't think I'll be coming back.

3 out of 5 stars A Tangled "Tail" of Intrigue.......2002-10-03

Dibdin's fifty year old Aurelio Zen is trapped like a rat within the law enforcement tunnel of the labyrinth that is the Italian bureaucracy. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time has resulted in a forgotten desk job in Rome where Venetian Zen stares at a phone that never rings. When he is suddenly summonsed to Perugia in the lush Umbrian countryside and placed as lead inspector in a notable electronics magnate's kidnapping, he gets the sense, as we do, that something other than his immediate involvement in the investigation is at work here. Nevertheless, Zen does his job and as he gathers his information, we observe Zen's world of family, friends and Italy from Zen's cynical eyes. After playing the scapegoat once, Zen is wary; he has learned his lesson and has learned it well. Understanding the system as painfully and personally as he has, Zen adapts, manipulates and manages to sever the rat tails of the investigation's ratking while simultaneouly reconnecting himself to the tangle of tails which form the ratking of the Italian Law Enforcement machine.
The mystery here, is secondary to Zen's tainted vision of the world. It acts a conduit to expose Zen's feelings about the present and the past. His mantra, if he has one, could be paraphrased: A man must compromise in order to survive. Dibdin's humorous portrayals of the Italian populace of Umbria, most notably, the Miletti siblings and the Naopolitan driver, are priceless. The reader gets a real sense of the city state mentality of Italy, where there are definite prejudices between Northerners and Southerners. Dibdin's countless behind-the-scenes suggestions of corruption, wire-tapping and self-sustaining acts of betrayal seem too farfetched to be thought solely fictional.
The tone of the story is cynical and dark which makes for some tedious reading. The reader finds himself in his own rat tail tangle of misunderstanding. Zen, a reluctant realist, must deal with an American girlfriend who does not understand his need to keep the details of his relationship with her a secret from his live-in mother. He's got some issues with his father that come to light while he ponders the ties between the Miletti patriarch and his children. Along with the bungled career, there is an ex-wife, an abandoned home in Venice and a lifetime of smaller regrets. In short, he is no designer detective in an Armani suit with wise-guy retorts; he is real and has real problems.
As the first in a series of Zen mysteries, I think this one a worthy introduction and I look forward to seeing how the character manages to survive in the murky environment of real life.

4 out of 5 stars First Book is Good.......2002-07-16

This is the first book in Dibdin's Aurelio Zen series. It's a fine story that marks a good introduction to this series. You learn just enough during the course of the stories to want to learn more, which you do in future installments. It sets the template for what is to come: Zen is given a case that no one really wants solved, there is trouble. Good, solid mystery with many interesting secondary charracters. Read the first, you will continue to the last. Maybe not compulsively but steadily.

2 out of 5 stars Flat, contrived and not too interesting........2001-08-06

The two stars are for location and local politics. The writer could not seem to decide who's voice he was telling the story in. I struggled to finish.

            Product Description

5 of the first 6 books in the series. This series of detective novels provide a penetrating insight into the less visible aspects of Italian society over the last twenty years. The earlier books have a lightness of touch that gradually becomes much darker. The character of Zen himself is anti-heroic, which adds much to the books' irony and black humour.

5 out of 5 stars a great book...dark with the overwhelming feeling of doom........2006-09-30

i can't believe no one ever reviewed this book i owned it years ago, in the 90's and from the moment i picked it up i could not put it down. RAR was hands down the best source book i ever read for werewolf (apocalypse)
the entire book made you feel as if amragedon was months away and that it was unavoidable.

it really made a lot of comparisons to how americans veiwed soviet russia during the cold war, with how the garou outside of russia veiwed those stuck (trapped)behind the iron shadow (nod to the iron curtain) it was by far the darkest themed book werewolf had,
and if you ever read the Silver Crown, this book gave an all new depth to the character Arkady, and what he had to do to escape Baba Yaga's reach.

i think the new forsakken series (or new WOD in general) could probally have something similar to this story arch, given the actions Vladimir Putin has taken to consolidate the kremlin's power (as of september 2006)
or better yet they could give a peak into the world of Kim Jong-il and the DPRK (north korea)

              Book Description

A groundbreaking yet simple set of exercises that will flatten the dreaded "mummy tummy"-regardless of a woman's age or when she had a baby.

Pregnancy naturally separates a mother's outermost abdominal muscles to make room for her growing uterus. Called a diastasis, this separation doesn't fully close up in 98 percent of new moms. The larger the diastasis, the weaker the muscles and the greater chance for mom to develop back problems down the road. Of perhaps greater concern for moms, new and veteran alike, the larger the diastasis, the bigger the belly that just won't seem to go away after baby's delivery!

Lose Your Mummy Tummy introduces the Tupler Technique, a set of deceptively simple abdominal and breathing exercises that decrease the diastasis and result in a firmer, flatter, and stronger belly. Like Kegels-those all-important and privately-practiced pregnancy exercises-the Tupler Technique can be practiced almost anywhere and at anytime. Including illustrations for a 15 or a 30-minute at-home exercise routine, Lose Your Mummy Tummy ensures:

              A tighter, flatter stomach

              A smaller waistline

A reduction or elimination of back pain

The ability to safely lift your baby and heavy objects

              More energy

              Better posture

The perfect preparation for your next pregnancy

              2 out of 5 stars Not Practical.......2007-07-14

As a new mom, I am sleep deprived and time deprived. I want a book with clear directions, illustrations (photos are better), and a concise message. This was not that. Perhaps the DVD offered on the author's website would be a better choice, but I didn't want to spend the $30 or so for the chance. If you have the time, and are not keen on color photos/illustrations, and can make sense of her written instruction, maybe this would be ok.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't have to have surgery to tighten my tummy.......2007-06-23

I am a mom with two small children. After my second pregnancy I developed a "mummy tummy" and lower back pain. People continued to ask if I was pregnant. My Obstetrician said my protruding belly was a diastasis recti and suggested surgery to bring the muscle together. My gynecologist told me to do sit-ups. I tried - sit-ups didn't help and I did not want surgery!

After reading "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" by Julie Tupler, I went to the author's website and also purchased the DVD because I personally learn better if I "see" what I am supposed to do.

The exercise program involves breathing techniques and an awareness of moving belly muscles. I was getting bored with the program and wondered if I was doing these simple exercises correctly, so I contacted the author. Ms Tupler answered my questions and told me that the book was based on recent research from Columbia University Dept of Physical Therapy and that this exercise program made the diastasis smaller during and after pregnancy. She gave me the encouragement that this program does work.

Ms Tupler told me that she was personally training a 50 year old pregnant woman who had a three finger diastasis and low back pain. In eight weeks the woman closed her diastasis (while her belly was growing with twins) and her back pain disappeared. I figured if a 50 year old pregnant woman could do it, so could I!

In a few weeks of following the exercise program described in the book, I was able to accomplish more than I ever expected from an exercise program. I discovered that it really wasn't difficult to incorporate the breathing techniques into my everyday life. Most important to me, I didn't have to have surgery to tighten my tummy.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC!!!!!.......2007-06-21

I am a personal trainer for senior adults. One of my clients recently shared with me her story of how she discovered this wonderful book, which she describes as her exercise "bible." Before I met her, she had had a big, protruding belly for a very long time, coupled with low back pain. She finally went to her doctor who diagnosed her with Diastasis Recti and strongly recommended she read this book. He said it was written by a nurse who specializes in treating this condition. He told her that he recommends the book to all his patients with Diastasis Recti because it really helps! That was all she needed to hear. She ran out and got the book, did the exercises, got the splint, etc., and today she has a flat stomach, no more back pain, and best of all, she no longer has a Diastasis Recti! As part of her program with me, we continue to do the exercises together. I am so impressed with her results that I too recommend this book whenever any of my clients has this condition. There are also a variety of exercises in the book which are very suitable for seniors who do NOT have this condition. By the way, I contacted the author by email, and she was incredibly knowledgeable and willing to answer all my questions. THIS BOOK IS FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES, not just women who have recently had babies. Get this book ladies; you will definitely not be disappointed. Julie Tupler ROCKS!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lose Your Mummy Tummy.......2007-05-10

I found the Tupler Technique very useful not only as a mother but as a Lactation Consusltant.
I used these techniques during pregnancy and my midwife was impressed at my 6 week check up as my muscles were intact!
When my third child was just over a year I began having back pain and realized I had let my awareness go - a few weeks later with a focus on Tupler Technique my back feels great and my stomach is flatter! Diastasis is gone.
Once you incorporate the work into your daily life it does become second nature - backjacking just feels wrong!
I am also able to assist the mothers I work with in incorporating these techniques into their daily routines and I get positive feedback.

1 out of 5 stars Not Very Practical.......2007-03-16

While the concept of this book makes sense, application in the life of a mother doesn't. I have four children and can't possibly retrain myself to think only in terms of my stomach. Basically the author wants you to think about how you sit, stand, carry your baby, cough, sneeze, lie down, get up and that's on top of the daily excercise routine. As an added bonus, she tells you that one jacknife can undo weeks of work! I know that at 3 am if one of my children starts crying, I don't stop to think about how to properly get out of bed first. I'm just trying to quiet my child before all of the others are awake too. That's too much of a time investment for me to make just to mess it up with one mistake.

3 out of 5 stars Chez Panisse Menu Cookbook.......2006-10-30

American foodies owe a debt of gratitude to Alice Waters. She is the patron saint of California cooking, or new American cooking, or whatever you want to call it. She's the one who gave us goat cheese croutons, roasted beets, mache, and so many other now-ubiquitous dishes. "Former Chez Panisse chef" is just as much a brand name as the brand named meats and produce she serves at her restaurant.

For those reasons, I actually read The Chez Panisse Menu Cookbook cover to cover, the way one reads an MFK Fisher book - to get an understanding of the cook's philosophy as well as recipes. Both women write in a formal style and have strong ideas about ingredients, preparation, presentation, and consumption. Unfortunately, Water's writing is more spare, perhaps as befits a patron saint, and lacks the pithy humor that leavens Fisher's books. Reading her prose is more like learning a lesson than being entertained.

Which may be why this book struck me as an essential book for someone who wanted to learn to be a restaurant chef, but not particularly useful for someone cooking at home. Most of the menus require some final preparation of the next dish after the preceding one has been served - possible in a restaurant, but not much fun at a dinner party if the cook wants to eat with the guests.

The individual dishes are also complicated or labor-intensive, causing me to often think as I read, "I'd eat that if someone made it for me." Waters is particularly fond of leg of lamb, lobsters, and quail and her recipes for these show the difficulty in preparing them at home. First, most of the lamb recipes call for spit-roasting the leg of lamb. She even explains how to build a spit. In my spit-deficient kitchen, those recipes are not possible.

Second, while I find a steamed lobster to be a wonderful treat on a special occasion, Waters takes the fun out of it with instructions to semi-cook a lobster, then remove the meat and make a fumet with the shells - a process involving roasting the shells, making the broth, putting the shells in a blender, then straining the whole thing through a fine sieve - then finish cooking the lobster. Whew!

Finally, quail do not usually show up on my dinner table, but if they did, I do not think I'd have the dedication to follow Walter's recipes. In most of her quail recipes she gives similar instructions: "Marinate the quail in a cool place overnight . . . turning the quail four to five times during this time." No little boney bird is worth losing a night of sleep.

Reading this Menu Cookbook made me want to spring for dinner at Chez Panisse, but it did not make me want to don an apron and start cooking.

3 out of 5 stars Showing its age.......2003-04-06

There's a lot of good sense and good food in this book, but the California style is getting a bit past mark of mouth, if you'll permit an archaic phrase/pun. I've made a few of these dishes, and they're fine, but somehow this isn't the book I pick up and flip through, asking myself, "what's for dinner?" With Jody Adams, Daniel Boulud, and Pat Wells on the shelf, I'm not sure I'd call this a "must have" addition. But, if you're a Waters fan, go for it .

This is one of Alice Waters' early books, and it shows, as compared to the later ones. Many of the recipes are complicated, and involve ingredients that are not easy to come by, even in NYC. I read it more for amusement. The later books (Vegetables, Fruit, Cafe), are much more user friendly and result in great dishes. I wouldn't recommend this to someone new to her philosophy of cooking, or who doesn't have serious kitchen experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic You Must Have.......2001-01-08

There's a special reason we go to the books of the great chefs. It's not to throw a meal together in 2 minutes, or to make sure we will find a dish we can cook with no trouble in two pans in our kitchens at home. It's to look inside an imagination and see what someone can achieve with ingredients and passion when it's what they do all day, every day, with devotion.

As Nigella Lawson said about another writer, "I often cook, if not directly from it, then inspired by it (which is more telling)". This is a truly inspiring work, one you will go back to again and again. From the buckwheat crepes with glaced fruit and eau de vie, to the amazing amazing fish soup, simple dishes with corn and over the top reworking of french classics, the judgement of flavours and textures is perfect. Ignore Water's fetish about perfect lettuce, read it, and just go to the kitchen. 10 stars out of five, the best of all the Waters books.

                3 out of 5 stars A good idea book.......1998-04-03

I enjoy reading this cookbook more to gather ideas than to find recipes I want to cook. Alice Waters describes how she and her team at Chez Panisse created many of their memorable meals, what inspired them, the problem that arose, and how they worked around those problems. What she doesn't write about as much is the actual process of preparing the food--the recipes. Of course, for some of these menus, it would be virtually impossible to create in a home kitchen, or to have access to the ingredients (a pig feed a diet heavy with garlic comes to mind). Good ideas for the knowledgable cook.

5 out of 5 stars Good recent information on the Leopard Gecko.......2007-01-20

The leopard gecko is a fascinating little animal. We've immensely enjoyed "B.J." in our home, and this book has lots of good information on all aspects of providing the proper environment, healthcare, and diet for your pet. Pay special information to the information on longevity, though. Unlike other reptiles such as the anole, leopard geckos have long life spans. The longest lived male in captivity is 29 and the longest lived female is 21. Females, in general, live considerably shorter life spans than males, but they still have typical lifespans longer than that of the domesticated cat. Many people buy a leopard gecko for their child expecting that the reptile will live only two or three years, then get rid of the animal when they realize their error and the length of the commitment involved.

As for the details of the book, it thoroughly explains sexing and selection of a good specimen for those who have not purchased a gecko yet. The section on housing your gecko shows you how to construct a naturalistic vivarium. If you are interested in breeding geckos, there is information on that subject plus the research of Dr. Brian Viets on temperature sex determination and coloration in case you want to specify those aspects of the geckos you breed. Also for you breeders, there are thorough instructions on the set-up and calibration of a home-made incubator. Roger Klingenberg, DVM, covers the diseases of the leopard gecko and their treatment in one dedicated chapter. Ron Tremper has a chapter on color and pattern variation illustrated primarily by photos of his own geckos. Tremper has developed much of what is now known about so-called "designer" leopard geckos. There is a nice section at the end of the book on other interesting geckos such as the Arizona Banded, the Texas Banded, the Central American Banded, the African Clawed, the Japanese Leopard, and the Malaysian Cat Geckos. There are plenty of eye-catching photos spread throughout the book.

This book may have more information than you need if you are a "casual" leopard gecko owner, but that is better than having insufficient information.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to start leopard gecko ownership........2005-11-05

If you are a beginner owner like myself, then this book is all you need to get started and become experienced. All necessary topics are covered and there are numerous contributors to this books chapters which makes it an excellent and diverse read. I have not read other leopard gecko books but see little point at this time. Hard to go wrong with this.

5 out of 5 stars Best leopard gecko book yet.......2005-07-17

The top gecko people in the country collaborated to write this book, and the information is extensive, but simple to understand. It goes beyond the beginner's how to set up a tank and feeding, and gets into breeding for different colors and all the different 'morphs' that have been created so far, with many good pictures. It is the most up-to-date so far in terms of new morphs (colors). After reading it the first time, I like to keep looking through it just for the pictures and to re-read the information on genetics 101. Besides being great little pets who will sit on your shoulder, Leopard Geckos are a popular classroom tool for teaching genetics at high school and college level, and I recommend this book for teachers and students. Most other Gecko books you pick up at the Pet Shop are not worth keeping.
BTW- Co-author and top breeder Ron Tremper is coming out with a more in-depth book soon (Summer 2005) for advanced breeding information and ideas. It will be the first of this type written on Leopard Geckos.

This is a very important book. People these days think that `only good news sells' and that it is necessary to be positive at all times. Tony Fry's book shows that it is more important to face up to the true extent of the world's current problems. Fry asks: how did we become so unsustainable? His answer is: by design. He looks at key aspects of modern design and finds, rather than something to celebrate, a history of `defuturing', that is, case studies of how our futures are being taken away from us. In arguing his points, Fry demonstrates an extensive knowledge of the history of design (for example streamlining, the Bauhaus, but also television and computers), and a comprehensive command of philosophy (for example Heidegger and Confucianism). The result is indeed a new design philosophy, one that is urgently needed given how ignorant many designers are about ramifications of design decisions. This is not an easy book, but what it teaches about the way most designed products in turn design unsustainable lifestyles is crucial to learning how to design sustainable futures.

                                Book Description

In 1903, when white settlement worker Mary White Ovington was 38, she had no sense that there was a "racial problem" in the United States. Six years later, she, W.E.B. DuBois, and 50 others founded the NAACP. Their goals included ending racial discrimination and segregation, and achieving full civil and legal rights for African-Americans-a dream that is still alive today, along with the organization they founded.

Ovington's candid memoir reveals a corageous woman who defied the social restrictions placed on women of her generation, race, and class, nd became part of an inner circle that made the decisions for the NAACP in its first forty years. Her actions often brought unwelcome notoriety-as wehn lurid newspaper headlines announced her attendance at a biracial dinner in 1908-yet she continued working side-by-side with such colleagues as DuBois, James Wheldon Johnson, amd Walter White, and began travelling across the country to help establish NAACP chapters in the deep south, the Midwest, and California.

Serialized in the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper in 1932 and 1933, Ovington's memoirs are here available for the first time in book form. Black and White Sat Down Together offers an insider's view of a seminal phase in the struggle for civil rights, and a moving encounter with a woman who was hailed in her time as a "fighting saint."
