Book Description
Blending suspense, compassion, raw instinct, and grim wit, Denise Mina’s Resolution completes her compelling Garnethill trilogy (which includes two New York Times Book Review Notable Books of the Year) that Val McDermid, author of A Place of Execution, calls “head and shoulders above much of contemporary crime fiction.” In her gripping new crime novel, Mina returns once more to the seamier precincts of Glasgow and the untidy world of the hapless but resolute Maureen O’Donnell. Maureen’s abusive father has shown up again in Glasgow; and Angus Farrell, the psychologist who so gruesomely murdered her therapist-boyfriend, is going on trial—with Maureen as the star witness. Meanwhile, she’s embroiled in another hard-bitten family’s feud when Ella McGee, an elderly stallholder at the flea market where Maureen sells illegally imported cigarettes, decides to take her son to small-claims court over unpaid wages and then turns up beaten brutally in Albert Hospital. Violence hovers in the most familiar precincts of Maureen’s Garnethill, and Denise Mina once again proves herself to be an award-winning writer.
Customer Reviews:
Superb..........2006-10-02
This book, the third in Denise Mina's GARNETHILL trilogy, was absolutely superb. Mina tells a gritty story that was as fascinating as it was disturbing.
Mina ties together all of the unresolved items from the previous two books (hence RESOLUTION) very nicely. I was totally satisfied with how things played out.
Mina is the writer that other authors such as Karin Slaughter wish they could be and I would hope in the future that Mina brings Maureen back, perhaps 10 or 15 years older. She is an interesting, intriguing character and it seems there is a lot more to her story that can be explored.
Gritty Mystery.......2004-09-26
Maureen O'Donnell has been abused, betrayed and is just trying to make some money. But her sister's baby is due, her father's in town and her former psychologist is up for trial. At the same time, a fellow stallholder at the flea market dies after a brutal beating. More non-American / non-English / non-Australian settings, please! (A)
Mina's Finest.......2003-07-04
Denise Mina concludes her extraordinary trilogy with a superb book. Resolution matches Garnethill and brings to full circle the saga of Maureen O'Donnell, the most interesting character, male or female, to emerge in crime fiction in recent years. Resolution stands on its own, although it is best read in sequence.
Excellent ..........2003-05-16
This is another excellent book by Denise Mina ... part of a fabulous series.
What a grand finale.......2003-03-06
If you're a fan of murder/mystery/swearing then don't buy this book, buy the first two in the series and start from the top, and come back later.
Good glad you bought both the first two, now this one, "resolution", simply put it's ******' brilliant. Sheer bloody genius, great story well told, what more can you want from a book. Muareen (the lead) is up to her usual shenanigans, but Denise Mina finds a way to round off the series in a way that leaves doesn't leave you disspointed. The only disspointment is waiting for the next book from this tallented young lady. 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
How Cruel.......2005-03-28
This book is a tease, an exercise in cruelty. The introduction says "you will hunt out and read everything of Geoff's that you can." Lots of introductions say things like this. Sometimes they're true and sometimes they aren't. Rarely will the urge to read the rest of someone's work be as intense as it proves to be after reading Tales from the Crypto-System.
Well, I've tried, and there isn't much out there that's available in year 2005 and, perhaps, outside of Australia. I loved every creative, sensitive, moral, and understanding story in this book so much that I'm driven, really driven, to read more. "More" isn't easy to find.
Buy this now and read it - but be forwarned: It won't be enough.
Tales from the Crypto-System.......2004-05-06
This is one of the finest collection of short stories I have ever read. 21 stories which span not only the past but also the future. Maloney's stories or intriguing, romantic, and have excellent plot development. This is must read book. Looking forward to the next anthology.
The strange and the true.......2004-03-31
In this collection of stories Maloney ranges from British-ruled India to the strange new worlds of outer space and possible futures, and into stylised, dreamlike environments in which the familiar is made - or shown to be - strange. This is a superb collection from a subtle storyteller. Maloney has the gift of drawing complex, engaging characters with an economy of strokes. His people are most often the small players, men and women with limited control over their circumstances, who, like most of us, are forced make compromises - though their dreams may be noble and their passions strong. Some of the settings have the sense of being psychological states as much as physical places, while others - like the wonderfully depicted India - feel so real that this reader was completely drawn into them and wished for more when the story was over. I want to particularly mention "The World According to Kipling," one of the longer stories in the book, whose protagonist Youngburton, a British agent in India, has led a life of adventure that would make a smashing novel - and I hope Maloney will one day write it.
Maloney is not a writer who feels compelled to tell all. He delights in raising questions and creating mysteries for the reader to ponder. But he also knows how to work a plot, and there is a well-judged balance between the strange and the straightforward, the contemplative and the exciting, in the stories chosen. This is a collection that will amply reward the reader in search of subtle, intelligent speculative fiction. Geoffrey Maloney is a writer who certainly deserves more limelight on the world stage.

Body and mind beware: relentless stress, shifty hormones, and dwindling serotonin spell big trouble for the idle. Blending conventional and alternative methods to squash their threat, Dr. David Edelberg presents The Triple Whammy Cure, a comprehensive plan for lifelong physical and mental well-being. Edelberg's work aims to help women, especially, who suffer from moderate but constant depression, fatigue, achy joints, and stress--the type that hangs around for years before raising red flags at the doctor's office. Through his three-week-long kick start plan, readers learn how to eat better, incorporate exercise, relaxation techniques and natural supplements into their lifestyles, and how to boost their mood-lifting serotonin levels. Forget weightloss plans; Edelberg says better health results from minding the whammy.
Similar to Dr. Christiane Northrup's work on women's health, The Triple Whammy Cure also explores disorders that result when sufferers ignore nagging symptoms. Anxiety, Fibromylagia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and the full gamut of menstrual issues (from PMS to menopause) each receive Edelberg's full attention as he illuminates connections to triple whammy causes and prescriptions for relieving discomfort. Food's role is to nourish; whole foods and portion control are key to quelling symptoms. His sound information offers help to all types--from those who work better in groups to those who appreciate do-it-yourself methods; from the antsy reader who will gladly dart around the book (as suggested by Edelberg's many "see page" references), to the cover-to-cover crowd. Score another point for moderation and self-care.--Liane Thomas
Book Description

You may be suffering from what Dr. David Edelberg calls the "Triple Whammy" -- a three-pronged assault on body and mind made up of unrelenting stress, low levels of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin, and your ever-shifting hormones. You can benefit from The Triple Whammy Cure, a simple but highly effective three-week plan that can stop this devastating attack and let you feel good again.
Author Dr. David Edelberg is a recognized pioneer in treating chronic illnesses and a practicing physician with thirty years of clinical experience. His Triple Whammy Cure is a natural program that provides powerful but easy solutions for each of the three whammies.

Customer Reviews:
Works for me!.......2007-02-27
I found this book to be so helpful, down-to-earth, and sensible it was a true relief for me to read it. I'm already implementing many of DR. E's suggestions, and the book also corroborated what my holistic Dr. and I have been doing, and reassured and motivated me about the exercise I'm getting. His explanation about serotonin and whole grain carbohydrates was very helpful, and the section on weight was very comforting. I'm 63, post-menopausal, and live an exhilarating but high-stress life, with a great marriage and a satisfying career. My exhaustion wasn't terrible, but I never could understand it, except as a "natural part of aging" which was very discouraging. This book has given me hope that the energy I had for most of my life has not gone away forever, and I can get it back. The suggestions are so sensible and simple it was easy to follow them right away.
The Triple Whammy Cure.......2006-04-07
Find the book very interesting. Plan on trying the food plan.
I'M NOT GOING CRAZY!!!.......2006-03-10
I wish I could rate it a 10! Finally a great read to help women going through a major time in their life cycle...perimenopause(35-55, yes it can start that early) Combine hormonal imbalance with a busy, stressful (good & bad)life, can make any woman feel like she is going crazy both physically and mentally. This book will enlighten you and show you steps to feeling better. I have my signature smile back. :)
A MUST READ FOR TODAY'S WOMEN! It can help the men in your life too.
Rings true.......2006-03-01
This book has some excellent advice. It says that women are more vulnerable to the bad effect stress has on your body because they naturally have lower serotonin. Then it goes on to describe many illnesses that are caused in part by stress that women certainly get more of than men. It gives very helpful ways to increase your serotonin naturally and to balance your hormones.
He says you need to be outside taking in the light with your eyes. If you are inside all day and then when you go out you have sunglasses on, your body will not produce enough serotonin. This was a revelation for me because all these female symptoms are in my family but my sister doesn't get them. And I realize that she doesn't wear sunglasses. Also, I didn't have symptoms for a few years when my child was small- during that time I didn't wear sunglasses because he would pull them off. It's very interesting.
The only thing I wasn't sure about in the book was when the author said that fish oil supplements were tested and don't contain any Mercury. That made me lose some trust in him because the supplements didn't contain any "detectable levels of Mercury" according to the website he recommended. That is very different to "no Mercury."
I think this book is worthwhile for women to check out. I have started to follow many of the suggestions in it.

Book Description
The recipes are interwoven with anecdotes about Calabrian culture and history (as multi-layered as one of the region's signature dishes, Sagne Chjine, a special lasagna), traditions, festivals, and folklore, and of course, the primary role that food plays in all aspects of Italian life.
From the best-kept secrets of her mother's kitchen to Calabrain family, friends, and local chefs, first-generation Italian American Mary Amabile Palmer has collected the best the region has to offer, thus preserving the past for generations of future cooks.
Amazon.com
For centuries, one of Italy's best-kept culinary secrets has been the cooking of Calabria, that region occupying the toe of the Italian boot. But in Cucina di Calabria, Mary Amabile Palmer boldly breaks the silence and introduces an exciting new cuisine to the world. Located just across the Mediterranean from North Africa--not far from Greece and Asia Minor--Calabria has long been the target of invasion and occupation; whatever the political fallout of such incursions, Calabrian cooking is all the richer for the introduction of foreign cuisine and ingredients (olives from the Greeks; eggplants and pine nuts from the Arabs)--that contribute a succulent and daring mélange of taste and texture.
In addition to the recipes themselves, Mary Amabile Palmer, a first- generation Italian American, includes anecdotes about Calabrian culture, history, traditions, and festivals, as well as recollections from her childhood. These delightful snippets provide context to the more than 200 Calabrian dishes detailed in Cucina di Calabria, making the book as much fun to read as it is to cook from.
Customer Reviews:
Cucina di Calabria.......2007-09-21
I really like this cookbook because my ancestors are from Calabria and it outlines many of my family's favoriate Italian recipes.
Calabria.......2007-05-13
This is the 4th time I've bought this book Loved it & makes a great gift. Not only good recipes but interesting facts re: Calabria
A feeling of the past.......2007-02-04
This cookbook helps me to reconnect with my father who passed away in 1984, he was from Calabria Italy. He loved every ingredient in this book. I was amazed to see zucchini flowers breaded and fried. My mother and father used to make them and every kid in the neighborhood loved them, I thought my father was crazy to cook those flowers, but now that I saw them in this cookbook it makes me realize how much of his heritage was in them. This cookbook is for anyone who wants a truly authentic cookbook!
Nice, really nice.......2006-12-20
I've made the caponata and two of the biscotti recipes. Based on great results I'll make other recipes too. One of the biscotti recipes I've memorized from making it so much. It is so simple and I make a batch every week for our morning caffe. Definitely a quality of life improvement! My mother asked me, 'Why do you fool around when you have a really good recipe already?' Fortunately, I did, because this recipe is probably my favorite, has no added fat other than that in the eggs and is so easy to vary as you want. I love my cookbooks by northern Italian ladies but find the southern selection a little more sketchy (I'm probably just not familiar with the books) so this is really a welcome addition for me.
Back in Grandma's kitchen!.......2006-02-25
The pastina recipe got me! For the most part, this is being back in Grandma's kitchen and even if I never make one dish (which of course, I will!) I have had a wonderful time down memory lane just reading this cookbook. While I agree with the person who said that this is more authentic than Giada De Laurentis's work, I think Giada is great and serves a different need. Don't hire a plumber if you want an electrician! These are the old time recipes and great. Giada is "Everyday Italian" and she is great too!

Most Used.......2007-09-03
I have purchased several search and rescue books to guide my training, but this book was used the most during the initial trainings of my Alsatian Shepalute, Citara. I found it VERY helpful in getting my 8 week pup from curious, to knowledgeable about scent. I only wish this author would write a book for the handler to learn about GPS, human tracking, etc., that one must learn to become certified. Easy to read, easy to understand and accomplish tasks. I thoroughly enjoyed it and refer to it often.
Customer Reviews:
An absolute must for every trailing dog handler.......2006-06-12
Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. Good choice.......2007-06-23
This book poses the question, "When is bargello not bargello?" This is a design rather than a project book although it offers a number of drawings that one could work from. What it really does is propose using shaded waves of color (ala bargello) as background stitching. The color examples in the book are different and striking. My favorite is two Canadian geese done in tent stitch flying into a petit point moon in harvest orange. The "bargello" starts in cream and moves into waves of progressively darker browns. It's very masculine, but I'd dare anyone not to fall in love with it.

Customer Reviews:
Not the "insider's account", but still good.......2006-05-16
This book gives you the idea that it was written by someone who is very knowledgable about the music industry, but hasn't had any actual hands-on experience. It's a good addition to your collection, but might not be what you are looking for if you want to actually get in the game. Check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen for a better read.
A Bitter Pill.......1998-12-03
I was upset. I was even angry. With the author? No, with the business. As a New Jersey songwriter, I am an outsider. More like an outsider looking to displace a Nashville "insider". We all want music to be our livelihoods. But there are only so many musical chairs. We all know this. So why do books that remind us of this fact disturb us so much? If you are absolutely determined to do all that is necessary to be a part of the country music scene, then this book is an easy read. For those circling like vultures, keeping their distances, but not willing to dive full force into the fray, this book will shoot you down. It is extremely well written, jam-packed with critical info, and is a one-stop country history lesson. I have a brand new appreciation for the Nashville machine. I hated what I read. But I believed what I read. Suggestion: 1. Buy the book, 2. Take a sedative, 3. Read the book, and 4. Well, you'll decide what's next.
Average.......1998-07-09
Daley's book still doesn't get to the insider track of what the Nashville music business is all about - mainly because he has not lived the experience - by trying to make it on music row. Rather, he uses the self-reports of others to guide his words.
For example, the quote ``Thou shalt live in Nashville,'' which refers to the industry's disapproval of anyone daring to commute between the main hive and the outlands.
However, he fails to explain why so many of the new artists signed to Nashville labels have never spent one minute in Nashville - compared to how it use to be. In short, he failed to mention that it is 'financial' backers paving the way for new artists, who have 'nothing' to do with the music business in Nashville.
Revealing and insightful insider's account........1998-02-02
As a reality-check, this should be considered a must-read by any aspiring songwriter, musician or singer before embarking on the pitted road to Nashville. Through incredible insight, research and experience, Mr. Daley illuminates the good, the bad and the eccentricity of the business of country music. His engaging style captures the tone of the laid-back, but unique, methodologies of the movers and shakers of the Nashville Community.
Book Description
Upon hearing rumors that the men who discovered the North Pole had fathered sons while on their expedition, S. Allen Counter arranged to visit the remote villages where Robert Peary, the credited discoverer, and Matthew Henson, the black man whose contributions to the expedition are widely ignored, stayed during their travels. This book recounts the astonishing story of Counter's trips to Greenland and the relationships he develops with the Eskimo ancestors of the two men. At the same time, new evidence about Peary's journey to the Pole is examined, and it comes to light that Henson, was the true hero.
Customer Reviews:
well documented.......2006-11-29
found this in my local library, and it was a great read. For a neuroscientist to be the writer, he is also a good writer. One passage describes as Peary's wife, coming to the artic from New York City on a relief ship, must have seen an Inuit woman with a Inuit child of white skin complexion, and "must have understood. A stoic woman", as the book describes, decided in not saying anything. Very very detailed, it filled the dots in many areas. Would have liked a critical analysis of the 1912 Henson book "A Polar Explorer" in light of the culture during the time it was written, and how it would have been re-written today, since the book publication could only be possible after Peary's review. And would have also mentioned more about the meteorites found and hauled in the 1890's. But still, the amount of detail and effort in stringing it all together is majestic.
Best of the Peary/Henson Books.......2006-01-10
I've read a good number of books by and about Peary, Henson, Rasmussen, Freuchen, Ehrlich, and others, and this is the best of the lot. It's a fascinating story that recounts the Peary/Henson trek to the N Pole and bundles it with such topics as Eskimo culture, race relations a century ago, and race relations today. Throughout it all, Dr. Counter writes with great sensitivity and objectivity about controversial topics. That he was able to discover the modern relations of Matthew Henson and bring them to the states for reunion and recognition is remarkable. If you are at all interested in history, the N Pole expeditions, or artic living, you'll really enjoy this book.
Amazing Story.......2001-11-06
I just heard this book's author on the radio, and was so impressed by him. He's a Harvard professor who got interested in the story of Matthew Henson, a black man who explored the Arctic and discovered the North Pole along with Robert Peary. The professor, Dr. Counter, has gone to the Arctic several times now, and has befriended the sons and grandsons of both Henson and Peary. Before Dr. Counter, nobody in the US even knew that these explorers had fathered children up there. And Dr. Counter has done a lot to get Henson recognition here in the States, where institutionalized racism has minimized his role in history.
