A good double story........2006-01-21
Barrie Roberts, again using the theme that he has access to a lost manuscript written by Dr. James Watson, does a good job in Sherlock Holmes And The King's Governess. It is a double story as the reader will quickly see the parallel between Holmes's latest client Diana Fordeland and the real Anna Leonowens (of Anna and the King of Siam fame). Watson uses names to protect the people living at the time, however the novel uses real personalities during this period. Diana or Anna is in London for the Queen's Jubilee and to see her former student, now the visiting king or Mongkuria (Siam). She is stalked by Russian agents and the detective story quickly becomes one of international intrigue. Very well done and fast moving. As much as I enjoy new stories about Sherlock Holmes it makes you wonder if Watson wasn't the sloppiest man in England with the hundreds, maybe thousands, of unpublished manuscripts that are somehow being found by modern writers.

In this latest Holmes and Watson adventure from British Holmes scholar, historian and writer Barrie Roberts, Holmes tackles a baffling mystery whose roots lie somewhere in Russia. A Canadian journalist, Mrs. Diana Fordeland, finds herself being followed around London by not one but two suspicious groups of men. It's the summer of 1897, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and London is packed with important visitors from nearly every nation on earth. Holmes' investigations disclose a tangled web of associations that somehow involve the murder of a British officer on leave in Paris years before, and a tour through Russia made by Mrs. Fordeland long ago. Roberts delights in revealing that "Fordeland" is a Watsonian pseudonym for Leonowens, but the reader will have guessed it long before, which is why I don't think it is a spoiler to reveal it here. Readers will also be able to guess the identity of the Asian monarch who comes to the assistance of Holmes, Watson and Mrs. Fordeland when they are trapped and surrounded by assassins.
As in other Barrie Roberts Holmes adventures that I have seen, what we have here is a nice blending of real history and pure imagination, a case for Holmes that allows him to display his talents to the full, and a novel that will not insult the intelligence and taste of the reader on every other page. Recommended.

I liked this book. I found it very enjoyable. It is the sequal of "Dragon Companion" Next up is "Dragon Tempest" Which is also good. I recomend you take a look at it! Especaly if you like The Dragon Knight seris, or just dragons, but even just a casual or first time fantasy reader will enjoy this book!

I have read to my son every night since he was born. He is now 3 years old and for his birthday I purchased The Great Dragon Rescue. I bought this book as a sequel to The Egg (which he loved TONS). The witch in this book has been a bit hit and when she eats the toad my son can't get enough! He can stare at the pictures forever and can recite the whole book to us. In his words "I read it, Mom!!". I highly recommend this for dragon loving boys!

Superb analysis of classic military rescue mission.......2007-08-24
In 1976, Israel comandos attacked Enebbe Airport in Uganda and rescued a planeload of about 200 hijacked passengers. This achievement was hailed world-wide and was made into several B movies. It was a huge propaganda coup for Israel and greatly enhanced their national myth.
However in real terms, it was far below the Dragon operations as masterfully described by Major Odom in this book: In Nov. 1964, Belgian paras with USAF transport, rescued over 1600 hostages from the midst of thousands of "Simbas" in Stanleyville, Congo (later Zaire and now Congo again). With only a handful of causalties, it was an operation of extraordinary success. The planning, the execution, the mishaps, the improvisations and the ultimate success of the mission are elegantly described. The limits imposed by the global political realities of late 1964 are not left out: they cost the lives of several hundred other hostages that were simply abandoned by political decisions.
An Airborne specialist, Odom provides detail of analysis that no journalist or civilian author can match. A no-nonsense analyst, Odom personally interviewd dozens of participants, and examines the entire story - the political and economic background, as well as the military details.
Rinjiro, old time colonial, personally lived some of the episodes of this story and recommends the book unreservedly. And yes, at least one B movie was made of this episode. But only in Belgium was there a parade. The rest of the world quickly forgot.
Equally recommended reading by the same author: "Shaba II", dealing with pretty much the sequel to Stanleyville. In 1978 the Belgians and the Foreign Legion went to the Congo again.

Great recipe for creating more JOY in your life.......2007-09-18
I am a Martha Beck fan, having enjoyed and learned from the wisdom and insightfulness of several of her earlier books. After the heavy lifting done in "Finding Your Own North Star" (read it BEFORE this book if you haven't already), I was unsure if she could produce a substantive follow up. This book did not disappoint.
This book goes deeper into certain topics. It introduces ten daily practices to feed yourself and create more joy in your life. Beck recommends taking one step at a time and mastering it before moving on. I opted to read the book from cover to cover first and then reread it as I worked through each step. I spent more or less time on each menu item, depending on my level of mastery with each step (including being still/meditation, finding and telling your personal truth, identifying your desires, nourishing your creativity, taking risks, feeding your life with treats, playing, laughing, connecting to others, and daily feasting).
This book has obvious applications for those working through food issues. But its life applications make it a must read for anyone who is ready to create more joy in their daily life.
I once sat next to a dietician on an airplane who had arranged to have Martha Beck speak at their national conference - connecting the "Joy Diet" to the importance of their work. She found Beck so endearing that she commented, "she will always be `my Martha'". I think most female readers of Beck's books will feel this type of connection. Martha Beck "gets" her readers. She comes across as both intelligent and wise with a high level of common sense. She's tells you like it is while simultaneously inspiring you to do better and be more. She separates herself from many other self development authors by liberally sharing her quirky sense of humor to soften her straight talk. These are some of the reasons I use Beck's books in my life coaching practice and why I recommend that you add this book to your library today.

I had the great good fortune to be trained by Martha Beck, known nationwide as "Oprah's Life Coach." Martha is funny, open and wise -- as is her wonderful book "The Joy Diet."
OK, it's probably the only "diet" book that doesn't have one recipe in it! Maybe that's precisely why I like it so much! Martha leads the reader through 10 Daily Practices which will bring much more joy into your life. Take it from me, it really works! From finding stillness amid the cacophony of your day, to telling the truth and taking risks, if you follow Martha's "menu" you will leave the table feeling full, happy and... joyful.

After "Expecting Adam" & "Following Your Own North Star," who'd have thot such simple menus could bring specifics from Nothing, Truth, Desire, Creativity, Risk, Treats, Play, Laughter, Connectionn, Feasting! All this about the JOY Diet?
When beginning my second read the quotes that jumped out about an encounter with prison inmates were, "Dostoevsky, The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure he never knows he's in prison." And from Freud, "Human beings are able to bury unpleasant, frightening, or forbidden truths in our subconscious minds so effectively that our conscious selves literally don't know what we know or feel what we feel." This is surely what we call "denial." It masquerades as ignorance; But it's actually the opposite. I always wondered when denial helped or hurt those guilt-laden prison inmates.
Continuing on page 43, "This is particularly crucial when you have discovered that a part of you is in deep denial and as the resulting sense of deep regret of your behavior..." you begin to choose the better way of accepting responsibility for misdeeds. This actually became true in the slowly developing remorse and acceptance of men who spent years of spiritual healing on "Death Row" at The GA Diagnostic Center!
I become more and more enamored by her Menus of Creativity and Connection! When interviewing certain inmates I could never understand why, "I see in each of them a human being of such breath taking beauty and value I can hardly stand it." Reasonable cookbook.......2005-12-31
This cookbook has some interesting recipes which are not particularly hard to make (like all vegetarian recipes, tends to use lots of ingredients). My main complaint is that it's not particularly authentic and is more an Americanized-vegetarian version of Mexican. If you want authentic, I think you need to keep looking.
No pumpkin in the Pumpkin-Rum Rice Pudding.......2005-11-20
The back cover of the book lists several titles of sample recipes, such as the Pumpkin-Rum Rice Pudding. So I looked up the recipe in the cookbook. Although the side note on page 149 writes, "Canned pumpkin brings a taste of autumn to this savory rice pudding treat," there is no pumpkin in the list of ingredients! and it is not mentioned in the recipe steps either! This is poor editing of a cookbook and makes me wonder whether other recipes in the cookbook have the complete list of ingredients and right amounts... Also, if you are used to GOOD authentic Mexican food, the recipes won't satisfy your cravings.

Definitely helped me get started on a few basic ones. Some salsa tips are great. I had a hard time finding some of the ingredients though. All said and done, it's a good value for money.
Excellent cookbook for fast, low-fat Mexican food!.......2001-02-24
This is terrific cookbook! After reading the reviews below I had mixed fellings about spending the money on this book, but I am glad I did! Our family has tried numerous recipes from the cookbook and each one has been excellent. The ingredients and measurements are right on the mark and each dish leaves you wanting more. The Calabacita Vegetable Burritos, Mexican Rice and Peas, Vegetable and Brown Rice Burritos, and Risotto Burrito with Sweet Potato were excellent. Even my husband asked for seconds which is saying at lot! Try this book...you will enjoy it!

I disgree with the reviewer from NYC. I've been cooking out of this book for a couple of months now and find the recipes easy and very tasty. Even my 17-year-old stepson really likes them. I've prepared Calabacita Vegetable Burritos, Eggplant and Red Bean Chilaquiles, Tamale Bean Pie, Portobello Burritos with Spinach and Goat Cheese, and Baked Tempeh Chilaquiles. OK, so they all don't take less than 30 minutes to prepare. I guess that's because I choose to chop, slice, and dice the veggies myself rather than use a food processor. I'm happy if dinner is on the table an hour after I get home from work
The other books in this series are also good--Low Fast and Fat and Low Fast and Fat Pasta. I also got the Low Fat and Fast Asian, which is a disappointment because it has so many weird ingredients that you can't pick up at the grocery store.
But try the Low Fat and Fast Mexican--you'll like it!

Best Arabian book I've found.......2007-06-17
If I bought only one book about Arabians, this would be it. What I like best about this book are the pictures of foundation sires of the past and influential stallions of more recent years. The reader does have to keep in mind that the book was published 20 years ago, so a lot of modern stallions won't be included. This is a great book that covers every subject in detail and has some really good conformation drawings that show you what is and is not desirable.

As an Arabian horse breeder, I have had this book for years and always recommend it to any new owners of an Arabian horse. There is a lot of overall general horse information as well as highlights on historical breeding programs, Arabian conformation, showing basics, building/fencing etc. This is a real "How to..." book.

I am a first time Arab owner and have found this book to be invaluable. Geared toward the Arab breed, Sharon included many topics in her book that can be used for any breed. From confirmation and breeding to the best halter to show off your horses head and how to train your horse how to hold that "Arab pose". There is so much to learn from this book for everyone from the backyard owner to the professional trainer/show person.

This is an excellent book for the Arabian horse owner; both the novice horse owner, for which this is a MUST and the experienced horse owner, form whom this provides excellent back to basics. The author's knowledge of the Arabian horse and her obvious pleasure at living amongst them generates enthusiasam for the reader and encourages capable, caring horsemanship. Illustrations and photos are nicely balanced with text, rich in history of the Arabian horse, foundation bloodlines, proper conformation, tips on grooming, feed, trailering, showing, behaviour, selecting veterinarians, and much, much more.

Organized thematically, the discussion proceeds from the essentially secular to more overtly sacred subjects. The author also considers Cornelis's prints in terms of their significant place in the history of that pictorial-textual hybrid form, the broadsheet.
As might be expected of an artist specializing in the comparatively modest medium of woodcut and active throughout his life in Amsterdam, a city still in its cultural infancy, Cornelis seems to have directed most of his efforts not at some select, erudite audience, but rather at a broad, if literate, urban middle-class market. Yet however colloquial in character, his often allegorical imagery is shown to be remarkably rich, witty, and inventive. Drawn from a wide range of artistic traditions, literary conventions, and often from such oral sources as proverbs and folklore, it offers a clear reflection of the economic expansion, social tensions, political uncertainties, and religious unrest that characterized the Netherlands during the first half of the sixteenth century. Strongly focused on its content yet broad ranging in its concerns, this study not only makes a significant contribution to art history, but also holds considerable appeal for those with an interest in the history of the Reformation, of Germanic literature, and of popular culture.

If you appreciated Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt for its presentation and viewpoint of growing up in poverty, you'll like this book for the same reasons--not on the subject of poverty but on race and understanding what it's like to grow up Black (& middle-class) in this country. It just tells, in a straightforward voice, the story of her life.
As a 10 year old, my mother had me read a book called "Black Like Me." It was a white man's experiment with wandering around in the world as a Black man. Carroll Parrott Blue's book is a better, more authentic version written by a Black woman who has lived the experience and is willing to talk about it.
I loved this book because from the first pages, with its pictures and its text, it lets the reader inside like an intimate friend--she shares what most Black people don't talk about. She lets you inside her experience. It's personal, yet it's nonfiction that reads like a novel. She shares her difficult personal relationship with her mother and her view of the world through popular culture that is familiar to all of us--but seen through Black eyes.
A Daughter's Story.......2003-02-23
I really enjoyed this book. The author wove together her personal experiences --the pain of growing up in a loveless yet nuturing home in Texas, and a type of everyman's history of the civil rights movement and the annonomous worker bees and vanguard her mother belonged too. She does this in an interesting and engaging way. She weaves her story of being born at the "wrong time" and coping with feelings of being an unwanted late life child which lead to an emotionally and physically abused childhood into the visual story and history of Blacks in media and film at the time Blacks created the protest movement(s) to erase injustice, and pyschological pain the african Americans experienced in America's south. Her story is a compelling one. Especially because it is so universally human. Her love hate relationship with her mother was the most poinant aspect of this book. She describes her response to the abuse of her mother yet she so admired, love, and comes to understand and forgive her finally.
There were some unanswered questions the reader might have , like what about her brother. What kind of relationship did they have? Was he too mistreated by her mother? Is she still married and what role did being married have on her relationship with her mother? but this is a story about a tragic and troubled and mother and daughter relationship.
IT IS A VERY INTERESTING READ for anyone interested in autobiography/civil rights movement and the media.
Innovative Biography!!.......2003-02-05
This is one of the most creative approaches to autobiography I've read in a long time. I enjoyed reading and studying it. The book is a highly visual autobiography---part prose, part poetry, part history and historical images. I particularly enjoyed how Ms. Blue revealed the nuances of an African American middle class mother-daughter relationship. Telling her story against the backdrop of the movies that were coming of age when she was growing up provided an enlightening perspective on the powerful influence of American movies on the human psyche. This book is a wonderful gem!

Based on a memoir written by Carroll Parrott Blue, The Labyrinth Project has produced a DVD-ROM that expands on the book by encouraging users to explore unique visual fields of interwoven narratives and create their own pathway in response to their journey. Using an interface inspired by her great grandmother's quilt, users can interweave stories that are embedded within several animated "panscapes" created from original photographs, video and archival materials. While exploring accounts of Blue's family, they encounter oral histories by members of Houston's black community and become immersed within a rich cultural landscape.
