Book Description
As the autumn storms of 1271 ravage the East Anglian coast, Crowner Ralf finds the corpse of a brutally murdered soldier in the woods near Tyndal Priory. The dagger in the man's chest is engraved with a strange, cursive design, and the body is wrapped in a crusader's cloak. Was this the act of a member of the Assassin sect or was the weapon meant to mislead him in finding the killer
Ralf's decision to take the corpse to the priory for advice may be reasonable, but he is soon caught up in a maelstrom of conflict, both personal and political. The priory is deeply divided over whether to purchase a relic, a decision that endangers both Prioress Eleanor's leadership and the future of the hospital. Brother Thomas becomes a suspect in the murder itself, and Ralf must choose between the demands of his brother, the sheriff, and loyalty to a friend.
Meanwhile, the murderer watches and waits.

Unrelieved Grief Can Kill, so Forgive the Sinner........2006-10-31
When you trust someone who deceived and hoodwinked you for five and six years is the equivalent as sorrow without end. Aeschylus, author of "Prometheus Bound,' wrote "Once to die is better than length of days in sorrow without end." The loss of faith in someone you thought you knew is worse than death. The grief of an impossible love as mortals try to emulate God's wisdom; we can never equal God's most perfect justice." When you harm another person, you will eventually pay in kind, sorrow without end.
This is a medieval version of the old movie, "Arsenic and Old Lace" in which two old ladies take in old men boarders to kill them and burry theim in the basement. By the time their nephew, played by Cary Grant, discovers what they have been doing, there are already thirteen graves and one cadiver in a chest in the living room. Two thieves want to kill Grant and both old ladies but there is no place to put their bodies. In the 13rd century, illness were worse than death. Illness in the Middle Ages was frightening. Some of the cures were even more so. Fakery by physicians as in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales,' is on the level of fakery in historical writing when it is all based on fiction.
There is much history of kings and royalty, monks and priotities which were all-limits to average people. Purgatory for having been too preoccupied with religiosity to pay adequate attention to governing King Henry III's subjects. Historians of the time concluded that he was not successful. Only fake historians can get away with palming off on uneducated public things which did not take place and never was true. That is called the modern way of re-writing history, but it is all false and the writer is using his skills to make people believe that his version is factual. Nowadays, it is hard to know what is truth and nothing but the truth. This is a fictionalized mystery based during the time of Eleanor, Henry, and various and sundry popes. It is written in the style of Medieval writing and not modern so that is one way not to appear to be factual or even an expert in the field. Books of history are not authenticated as there are so few really interested in the good things which happened in the past, only the bad. Many such will suffer sorrow without end.
strong medieval mystery .......2006-02-01
Prince Edward is in the Mideast determined to wrest Jerusalem out of the Saracen's hands; many wounded soldiers, in body and soul, are returning home and countless of them stop at Tyndal Priory where they hope to get rid of their afflictions in the hospital run by the monks and the nuns. One the road to Tyndal Priory, a man returning home kills a foot soldier in a very gruesome manner.
Ralf the crowner (a man who hunts down criminals) brings the corpse to Tyndal Priory to have the nuns look at the body for clues. Brother Thomas, who has just returned to the priory, examines the body and thinks is his former jailer; he faints. When he comes to, he refuses to tell Ralf why he fainted. He is imprisoned in a cell until he is willing to tell Ralf the truth but the prioress Eleanor believe the real killer is hiding out among the patients. When a second murder occurs, a thorough investigation is undertaken.
Fans of Sharon King Penman will want to read SORROW WITHOUT END a medieval mystery that captures the flow of the Middle Ages. The mystery is well constructed and thought provoking as readers learn about life inside the priory and the battle fatigue syndrome afflicting the soldiers who made it home. There are many suspects but nobody seems to have a motive for the killings. This book is made even more interesting then most medieval tales because it shows that the nuns and monks have human emotions that they are forbidden by their vows to act on.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This has Mystique issues 14-18 in it.
Mystique is sent to Europe to look into the possiblity that a company there is doing the use mutants as lab rats and see what they can get out of them manoeuvre.
Shortpack tags along. What they discover actually goes a lot further than just a little bit of experimentation.
creative story.......2006-07-01
I always liked X-Men as a kid and when I heard about this series involving Mystique, actually working towards the greater good, it got my attention- I have only read the first three books in the series, but I think its a fun story- Mystique who has always been one of the most famous villians in the series working for Magneto is based on surrounding circumstances forced to work for Charles Xavier. This book continues the story of mystique as an undercover agent for the leader of the X-men and like the first two books its very entertaining. The graphics are great and the story is fun providing the usual comic book action. If you are a fan of the X-men, i think that this provides for a continuing enjoyable story following the complex character of mystique as she is forced to make ultimate choices as to whether she wants to continue to work for the greater good, which is clearly out of line with her past character. Good clean fun

Book Description
Daniel Amen, M.D., one of the world’s foremost authorities on the brain, has news for you: your brain is involved in everything you do—learn to care for it properly, and you will be smarter, healthier, and happier in as little as 15 days!
You probably run, lift weights, or do yoga to keep your body in great shape; you put on sunscreen and lotions to protect your skin; but chances are you simply ignore your brain and trust it to do its job. People unknowingly endanger or injure their brains, stress them by working at a frenzied pace and not getting enough sleep, pollute them with caffeine, alcohol, and drugs, and deprive them of proper nutrients. Brain dysfunction is the number one reason people fail at school, work, and relationships. The brain is the organ of learning, working, and loving—the supercomputer that runs our lives. It’s very simple: when our brains work right, we work right—and when our brains have trouble, we have trouble in our lives.
Luckily, it’s never too late: the brain is capable of change, and when you care for it, the results are amazing. Making a Good Brain Great gives you the tools you need to optimize your brain power and enrich your health and your life in the process. The principles and exercises in this book, based on years of cutting-edge neuroscience research and the experiences of thousands of people, provide a wealth of practical information to teach you how to achieve the best brain possible. You will learn:
•how to eat right to think right
•how to protect your brain from injuries and toxic substances
•how to nourish your brain with vitamins and do mental workouts to keep it strong
•the critical component of physical exercise, and which kinds work best
•how to rid your brain of negative thoughts, counteract stress, and much more
Full of encouraging anecdotes from Dr. Amen’s many years of experience, Making a Good Brain Great is a positive and practical road map for enriching and improving your own greatest asset—your brain.

Waste of time and money.......2007-09-05
exercise, proper diet and supplements may help your brain function - wow I didn't know that !
very easy to comprehend & quite informative.......2007-09-05
The way that this book is written is quite general and uses laymans terms. It was very easy to understand and read quite smoothly. The chapters thread into one antoher making the educational process that much easier.
Well, here's another 2 cents, or in Praise of Excellence (Neurologist-Psychiatrist).......2007-08-26
It is difficult to add significantly to the many high rating this book has already earned from esteemed colleagues, but Amen has another winner. Using the information that he's garnered over his years of looking at both Patients and the SPECT scans, he has developed some rational and excellent guidelines to making the most out of the one brain we have.
From regular exercise, playing music, fish oil, acetyl carnitine, ginkgo biloba, an intimate relationship, and social activities to the avoidance of excess alcohol, nicotine, trans fats, sports without a helmet; he has organized a superb collection of practical ways to make and keep a good brain great.
I circulate a copy of this CD to my patients, because it is easy to understand; and his interventions are very doable. While none of his ideas were especially foreign to me, his recognition of their worth and organization of his book is especially valuable.
My fantasy is that his book with help at least one parent see the foolishness of letting their children risk lifelong brain damage by ignoring proper brain protection.
This book is well worth reading.
My two cents... (review by former research scientist).......2007-07-16
I think the two top reviews are very well written, so I am not going to revisit the same territory. In essence, I agree with everything they said. This book is loaded with sound advice, good references, supplement recommendations, etc.
What I wanted to add is that it is a very readable, practical and enjoyable book for anyone. For anyone with a brain (all of us!), it's an inexpensive investment in return for a lifetime of benefits. Dr. Amen focuses a lot on prevention of problems, especially those related to aging and the brain. As a former biochemist, his suggestions make sense and I have implemented them in my own life.
If you are on SSRIs (e.g. Zoloft), have ADD/ADHD or other issues, there is a lot of value added material about how certain supplements can be VERY helpful and as effective as some drugs. He also includes warnings where it is appropriate and they seem to lean on the conservatie side.
I don't have any reservations about this book or the credibility of the author. It's a "no brainer" decision from my perspective, I don't know of one that is better and I read a lot!
Learning How Our Brain Works.......2007-06-27
This is a scientific book written in layman's language about the functioning of the brain. It contains self tests to determine if the reader has any problem area. Then, suggestions for improvement are offered. Learned so much.

A definite favorite.......2007-10-04
I have collected hundreds of cookbooks over the years - bread and baking books in particular. This one definitely rates as one of my all time favorites (if not THE favorite) and most used bread books.
What a wonderful bread baking experience.......2007-09-09
This book is just wonderful! I have been baking bread by hand for several years now and have thouroughly enjoyed it, but this book has helped me to stretch beyond the recipe and try some new things. In the past 2 weeks, I think I have made 7 recipes out of this book. I just can't seem to stop. The Bulgur Oatmeal bread, I think, is the best bread I have ever tasted. Absolutely AMAZING! I also made the Sesame Burger Buns, Whole Wheat Long Rolls, Vienna Bread, Pain Campagne and Farm-Style White Bread with Cardamom. I have probably 200 cookbooks and this is my new favorite! A must read!
Bread Bible is Worthy.......2007-07-19
This is a fine cookbook. It explains in detail the ins and outs of yeast and flour. The recipes are good, but I was expecting a little more pizazz, a little more creativity and a few more fundamental recipes. I would like it if next time they include more "bread machine" recipes for a 2 pound loaf, and a few more bagel recipes.
If you need a basic bread book, this one will do nicely.
It's a Long Time 'n Holy Art as It's Hearty 'n Full of Loving Warmth.......2007-03-09
As a milleniun over another pratice which became an basic 'n essential for feeding mankind, the art of bread making, as shown in The Bread Bible, is as lovelier at It's best as ever.

Weighing almost as much as a small child, Beth Hensperger's The Bread Bible contains 300 recipes, plus slice after slice of baking wisdom. Hensperger certainly knows her bread: she is the author of several other yeasty numbers, including the mouthwatering Bread for All Seasons and the feisty Breads of the Southwest. Her Bible features simple, basic breads, such as White Mountain Bread, French Bread, and an Old-Fashioned 100 Percent Whole-Wheat Bread, as well as fancier breads such as Brown Rice Bread with Dutch Crunch Topping and a tangy Anadama Bread with Tillamook Cheddar Cheese. Not forgotten are scones, biscuits, pizzas, croissants, waffles, muffins--and even coffee cakes. As can be expected from such a hefty, all-encompassing volume, many breads demand the skills of agile and able bakers. Crescia al Formaggio, an aesthetically pleasing savory cheese bread, requires scrupulous time-keeping and copious amounts of elbow grease and patience. Of course, the rewards are high. Happily, many other loaves can be whipped up in a bread machine, and are equally satisfying. An Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Bread using Irish oats makes everything good with the world with its rich, nutty texture. Hensperger's sweet treats are also a delight--the Blueberry Gingerbread works wonders with vanilla ice cream, and won't take up your whole day slaving over a hot stove.
Although The Bread Bible would have benefited from color photographs to tease the taste buds, Hensperger's latest ode to bread will still prove invaluable for both new and seasoned bakers. --Naomi Gesinger

Yum.......2007-07-25
These are great breads: relatively simple to make with absolutely great doughs. If you bake much bread, you will recognize the wonderful quality of her dough - firm, easy to handle, with that wonderful yeast tang.
This book belongs in the kitchen of every serious baker. New to breads? This is a great place to begin.

I'm not kidding. I've seen people's eyes roll back in their head eating this bread. Or the scones.
beautiful bread.......2005-08-26
This book is a favorite in my collection. As a professional chef I saerch out and use the recipes that provide dependable results. I have yet to be let down by this book.
My favorite bread cookbook.......2004-07-20
I really enjoy this cookbook; I cook the banana bread recipe from this every time I get 3 mashy bananas. I keep running through different recipes, and I've still not gotten a bread disaster. I tend to mostly use my bread machine's dough cycle, and form the bread myself, but since I got a higher quality bread machine, the recipes are also working fabulously in the various machine cycles. I highly recommend this book; lack of illustrations seem to bother some, but it's not really been an issue for me.
A Bible for the Home, but not for the Seminary.......2004-01-17
This is the first of two books by the same name `The Bread Bible' written by Beth Hensperger and published by Chronicle Books in 1999. The second book with this title, written by Rose Levy Beranbaum and published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2003 I have reviewed earlier, before I discovered this title.
This occurrence is actually a rare good fortune, as it gives us a chance to compare two essays of exactly the same subject and pick that effort which does the better job on the subject. Both authors appear to have ample credentials for the chuzpah required to write a book with such a pretentious title. Ms. Hensperger has written five other books on bread baking and Ms. Beranbaum has written three other large, well received books on baking, two of which are also `bibles' on their topics.
Ms. Hensperger gives us 473 pages of text and 21 pages of index at $32.50 while Ms. Beranbaum gives us 608 pages of text and 21 pages of index for $35.00. Ms. Hensperger gives us 25 very useful introductory pages on equipment, flour, and general techniques. Ms. Beranbaum gives us 62 pages of what I considered to be a model of culinary writing on the ten essential steps to making bread. This is the first sign that Ms. Beranbaum is aiming at a much more sophisticated audience than Ms. Hensperger.
Ms. Hensperger gives us no color photographs or diagrams illustrating techniques. The few line drawings seem to be primarily for decoration. Ms. Beranbaum's book provides four sections of full color photographs of the baked products essayed in the book. She also provides many pages of expertly done line drawings illustrating baking techniques such as the `business letter fold', layering foccacia with herbs, and making sticky buns. Other line drawings give very good pictures of baking equipment.
Ms. Hensperger's Table of Contents with the name of each and every recipe spelled out is much more to my taste than Ms. Beranbaum's simple chapter headings. Fitting Ms. Hensperger's home baker orientation, she has two whole chapters devoted to using a food processor and a bread machine for bread recipes. Ms. Beranbaum discusses bread machines, finds useful things they can do, but ultimately keeps them on the sidelines due to their small capacity and the tendency of most to heat the dough, causing a too fast rise in the dough for optimum taste. Rose is certainly not a Luddite, as she makes extensive use of the KitchenAid stand mixer and its big brother the Hobart stand mixer. I prefer to not use bread machines. If you are comfortable with them, Ms. Hensperger may have more to offer you.
It is no surprise that both authors deal with brioche. Ms. Hensperger includes four recipes for brioche and three variations. All are embedded in a chapter on egg breads including Challah. Ms. Beranbaum devotes a whole chapter of 45 pages to brioche, including Challah, cinnamon buns, panettone, and a provocatively named `stud muffin'. Lots of variations on each recipe are given. As with all recipes, Ms. Beranbaum's approach is much more detailed and precise. The most obvious sign is that all of Rose's recipes give ingredients in both volume and weight in imperial and metric units. This feature alone would swing my choice in favor of Ms. Beranbaum's work. Another example of Rose's precision is that she specifies the high gluten brands of all-purpose flour rather than simple `all-purpose flour. I am constantly amazed at the variety in recipes for brioche. Like every other authoritative recipe, both recommend an overnight rise, but the two recipes start the sponge in much different ways, with Ms. Beranbaum using a much more finicky approach, being very careful to avoid exposing the yeast in the sponge to salt than Ms. Hensperger. When separating the dough to be put into molds, Ms. Hensperger is unconcerned about differences in size. Ms. Beranbaum is not compulsive about same sizes, but does recommend a scale to achieve uniform amounts of dough in the molds.
Neither author oversimplifies her procedures, but Rose Beranbaum consistently gives a much more professional instruction and a deeper understanding about what is going on along the way. Both have an ample amount of passion and love for what they are doing. If you are a home baker and can find Ms. Hensperger's book at a good discount, you will not go wrong. If you are a baking hobbyist or even aspiring to being a professional baker, then Ms. Beranbaum's book is the one you want. Both are excellent. Ms. Beranbaum and her publishers seem to have invested much more energy, money, and precision into their volume.
Judging from other reviewers comments, some errors have been detected in this book. The same is true of Ms Beranbaum's book. This issue is a wash and I have stopped holding a small number of minor errors like that against cookbooks.

Best All-Around Pug book available.......2005-11-30
Really fun book with lots of touching and informative sidebars on every aspect of owning a Pug including agility, therapy dog, rescue etc. Highly reccomend it. A Fun and interesting read. If you love Pugs then you'll love this book.
Very Informative.......2005-11-09
I was very glad to buy this book. I have read other books on the pug breed, this by far is one of the best I've read.Since I am first time owner of a pug dog,it helped me have a better understanding of a very comical, loyal and loving pet I am proud to own for 8 years now.
Looking for a Pug? Get this Brits book........2003-09-04
Having met Alison a number of times both on this side of the Atlantic at the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialties as well as at seeral Crufts shows I was curious to know what her book was like so I quickly ordered it. It arrived the day my litter of one was born. Since I was up for the night anyways I settled next to the new mom and her pugette and began to read the 128 page hardcover book. Each of the ten chapters provided interesting and very valuable information for any one who is considering getting a Pug. The first chapter introduces the breed and gives a bit of history covering their Imperial heritage, their European introduction and British royalty connections. It then crosses the Atlantic to the American Pug and brings you current with names of some rich and famous people who have been Pug fanciers. All this information is pretty much the standard fare for a book on Pugs. But the second chapter is the one that really captured my attention: Choosing a Pug. this chapter is the one that will get me to recommend this book to those who are beginning their search and are wanting, or in my estimation needing, more information on the breed. Each Chapter there after: Ariving Home, Early Lessons, Caring For Your Pug and even Problem Behavior all help someone who is soon to select their future companion to learn more about what they may expect as an owner of a Pug, puppy or adult. The next three chapters address activities owners of Pugs can do with their dog including information on Canine Good Citizen, Obedience, Agility, Freestyle, Carting, Showing, Therapy dogs, and breeding. Sprinkled throughout the book are highlights focusing on some special Pugs and their owners detailing their accomplishments. The last chapter, Health Care, is written by a Veterinarian. Thre is special attention to breed-prone problems. Although Ms Moun is from England she addressed the USA Pug Fanciers interest and concerns thourghly.
Book Description
The pug has incomparable allure and is one of the world's ten most popular breeds. However, behind those mournful eyes lurks a mischievous fireball of a dog that has regal self-confidence. This lavishly illustrated yet amusing book is a loving exposé of all things pug—from selecting the perfect puppy to making a proper entrance at the dog show. Along the way, the book is replete with charming photos pug-lovers will take to heart as well as the history and lore behind the breed (they are aristocratic dogs with a somewhat murky past, having arrived in Europe with Genghis Khan's cavalry). No other breed of dog has been so often immortalized in paintings and photographs and in verse and prose. The notables who have been bewitched by pugs include Queen Victoria, Jackie Onassis, and Andy Warhol. Beautiful, worshipful, and useful, this coffee-table book celebrates pugs in all their cuteness.

living with pugs.......2007-01-13
This book is a must have for all passionate pug lovers. Great photgraphs and well written and informative text, an absolute delight
Beautiful and practical.......2007-01-03
I have owned pugs for 12 years now. They are wonderful little dogs, but they do have a personality that is not for every dog owner. This book does a great job of presenting the pros and cons of pug ownership (Pugs are loyal, fun, friendly, and great companions. They are non-aggressive and get along well with other pets and family members. However, pugs shed a lot, make really funny and sometimes loud noises, aren't a dog to take jogging, and are pretty useless as guard dogs.) The photos are stunning, the information is factual and helpful if someone is trying to decide if a pug is the dog for them.
Fabulous Pug Book!!!.......2006-11-16
I have many books on pugs and this is the best of them all....Very thorough info and covers just about every topic on pugs you would need. The pictures are beautiful also. It is as beautiful as a glossy coffee table book with just pictures and super informative on top of that. The best and highly recommended!!!

The photographs of the etching patterns in this book are deporable. I know that taking photos of clear glass to display the etching pattern is not the easiest thing to do - I do it on Ebay all the time - but the attempt failed miserably here. I call it a waste of my money.

In the world of building and how-to books, an occasional and rare thing happens: a book appears that goes beyond the hardware and advice and offers a deeper insight into what really motivates people to build, fix, and create things, and begins a conversation about what such endeavors mean to ordinary people who are drawn to and realize "do-it-yourself" lives. George Ehrenhaft has written what could only be called an affectionate book about a group of owner-builders around the country and their true tales, often in their own words, about not only what they have done and how, but also why they did it in the first place. There are stories of serious builders and weekend hobbyists--connected on an almost spiritual level by the desire to make or keep a roof over their heads--and their willingness to jump, inexperienced, into projects and learn by doing, learn by making mistakes, learn from friends, professionals, and books, from blood, sweat, toil, and tears, and finally by success itself.
You'll meet, among others, the Connecticut architect and his "city-girl" wife who lived in a tent for a year while building their dream home, a flutist for the Boston Symphony who renovates commercial real estate in his spare time, and a divorced mother of three who rebuilt her life as she built her home. Their experiences, insights, observations, and perspectives are revealing and moving. Ehrenhaft's exploration is inspirational, laugh-out-loud funny in places, touching, and simply a great read as a study of a fascinating group of dedicated "weekend builders." This book is a rare gem, written in a warm, articulate, and absorbing style, a great gift for any do-it-yourselfer who also loves to read; also, for that matter, for anyone at all who enjoys a good story about human inspiration and the creative urge. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
Monday to Friday, they teach school, practice law, push paper, pound a keyboard, or run a company. But they start their weekends with a trip to the nearest home-improvement center. They're owner-builders, men and women just like you who know the satisfaction of doing it themselves—of adding a deck, remodeling the den, or building a dream house from the ground up.
The Builder's Secret will introduce you to some owner-builders who've renounced ordinary weekend pleasures in favor of lengthy, backbreaking—but ultimately exhilarating—home-building projects. Inside, you'll meet a Connecticut architect and his "city-girl" wife who lived in a tent for a year while constructing their dream house, a flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra who began renovating commercial real estate in his spare time when his country home neared completion, and a divorced mother of three who says that she built more than her house during those two years on the job—she rebuilt her life, too. You'll meet others whose stories will inspire you to start that dream project of your own.
A few of these owner-builders learned to build during childhood, others didn't pick up a hammer until they were grown. But all discovered that the highest reward of building was not what they got for their toil but what they became by it.
"This chronicle of owner-builders is really a 'why-to' manual, revealing how tremendously satisfying it can be to sleep beneath a roof that you built yourself."
—Kevin Ireton, editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine
"Building your own house is both frustrating and rewarding by turns. You will enjoy the stories chronicled in
The Builder's Secret—they have the whiff of sawdust and reality."
—Witold Rybczynski, professor of architecture, McGill University
"Gives all those who have ever dreamed of building their own house valuable insights into the physical and spiritual process. This book reveals that the satisfaction of achieving one of life's basic goals—creating your own shelter—is within the reach of anyone."
—Will Beemer, director of The Heartwood School

This painstakingly thorough examination of van Dyck's extensive use of prints--including etchings, engravings, and aquatints--is the companion catalog to an exhibition in Antwerp celebrating the artist's birth 400 years ago, in 1699. Though he is best known for his paintings, van Dyck's prints influenced artists well into the 18th century and have always been prized by collectors and students of the history of printmaking. The book's introduction expresses the authors' hopes that it will prove accessible to the ordinary reader--and there are many sections that are fascinating. The descriptions of the 17th-century practice of ordering copper plates--which when delivered still bore hammer marks from the metalsmith who had created them, so that before beginning an etching the artist (or more likely his apprentices) had to make the surface flat--are just one example. Another is a description of the printmaking processes of the time that points out the "clots and pumples" on a plate that has been heated too rapidly, as a contemporary translator described the little bumps that appear in such well-known images as Rembrandt's Deposition, with its speckled ground. There is also a stunning array of images in various states, including preparatory drawings, proofs, corrected proofs, final prints, later engravings, and similar types of prints created in other ateliers of the time.
Van Dyck acquainted himself with printmaking in Rubens's workshop, and that artist's flair is evident throughout van Dyck's fluid, flashy, finely observed portraits. Van Dyck was not Rubens, however, or Rembrandt--both of whom employed printmaking as simply another medium to bend to their incomparable vision. His prints seem to have been executed mainly as advertisements, but the artist is so accomplished that it is surprising how little his work is discussed today. This scholarly, carefully produced book is filled with large color plates, and its type is set, blessedly, in such a way as to make its brilliantly detailed text highly legible, unlike many tomes of this type. With the exception of the slightly confusing captions, which often omit dates, it is a book that will go far in correcting contemporary neglect of this important artist. --Peggy Moorman
Book Description
Like Dürer, Rembrandt and Goya, Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) made a key contribution to the art of printmaking. He was himself a talented etcher, and prints after his paintings were cut by the best engravers of his day. Yet, to date, his printmaking has suffered from undeserved neglect. This book discusses Van Dyck's first acquaintance with the medium in Rubens's workshop and illuminates the genesis of the Iconography, a portrait gallery of illustrious contemporaries. All his etchings are catalogued together with preparatory drawings and grisailles, as well as proofs containing corrective flourishes. Furthermore the book includes a selection of the prints after paintings by Van Dyck. A number of them were the initiative of the artist himself, and others were produced on behalf of publishers and engravers. Works from the eighteenth century are included to illustrate the influence Van Dyck exerted until long after his death-- even in France and England.
The introductory essays discuss the collecting of Van Dyck prints, the phenomenon of the trial proof, and technical aspects of the etchings. Based on new archival research the biographies are included of all those who were instrumental in the production of the prints: engravers, publishers, and the persons to whom they were dedicated by Van Dyck.
Many of the prints are reproduced in color and the book has numerous comparative illustrations making it essential not only for scholars and enthusiasts of Van Dyck's work, but all those interested in the history of printmaking.

One families love for an uncle with Downs Syndrome.......2002-09-22
Crazy Dave struggles to live a normal life on a rural Indian Reservation in Ontario, Canada. Basil Johnston recalls his childhood and living with his grandmother and "Crazy" uncle Dave, who has downs syndrome. A fascinating, humorous and very realistic account of what it was like growing up on an Indian Reservation. Uncle Dave tries desperately to fit in with his community but is often misunderstood and never fully accepted. Uncle Dave is a metaphor for his people, the Native American Indian who is an outsider in is own country and anglo society. But once understood, the love, warmth and strong family values are seen through the Indian people. "Crazy Dave" often gets into trouble without knowing why. When he wants to play baseball with the children he hits the ball to far, he eats a wood cutter's lunch and is mistaken for a Japanese spy during the height of World War 11. This is an excellent read, don't be discouraged by the slow pace of the first two or three chapters, once started, you will not want to put the book down. I devoured the book in 3 days.
