So palpable is the role of loneliness in Southwesterly Wind, the third installment of Brazilian author Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza's seductive police-procedural series, that it almost deserves a separate listing among the cast. Nobody here escapes its casual ravages. Certainly not Gabriel, a 29-year-old office drone in Rio de Janeiro who still lives with his religious-fanatic mother, fears intimate association with younger women, and might well have remained a societal cipher had he not been the recipient of a most dubious prediction: "A psychic saw that I would commit a murder before my next birthday. There's less than two months to go," he explains to Sergeant Espinosa of the Copacabana precinct. It would of course be absurd to launch an investigation into a slaying that hasn't occurred yet to a victim who isn't known. However, the compassionate Espinosa at least puts a police tail on the would-be killer, and he interviews one of his fellow workers, Olga Marins, who witnessed the misfortune-telling and looks increasingly to Gabriel as the remedy for her own solitude. Espinosa even tracks down the psychic reader responsible for setting these events in motion--an economist-turned-entertainer who's oblivious to the damage his auguries might cause a troubled mind. With Gabriel's birthday fast approaching, and people perishing around this paranoid and soon-to-be armed young man, it falls to Espinosa to identify the real murderer and discover the startling truth behind Gabriel's "craziness."
As he did in The Silence of the Rain and December Heat, the divorced and bookish Espinosa acts in this tale greatly from instinct and emotion, his heart keenly on view as he pursues a winsome but elusive girlfriend of Olga's and indulges a precocious teenage neighbor who thinks him in desperate need of canine companionship. Garcia-Roza glosses over the violence for which Rio's cops are known, preferring a more romantic conception of Espinosa and his colleagues that allows the author to focus on the psychology of his inexpert criminals. With its lucid prose and loving portrayal of Brazil's largest city, Southwesterly Wind is crime fiction for the connoisseur--as thoughtful as it is thrilling, and displaying more intriguing loose ends than the thongs of Ipanema. --J. This is the 3rd Esponisa book in the series and also the third one I'm reading. Sadly this one's the weakest of the lot. It's also beginning to bother me that Espinosa befriends a woman in each book and then in the following one's they never reappear. Strange.

It's a catchy narrative hook. A young man approaches Inspector Espinosa of the Rio de Janiero police to tell him of a most bizarre prediction: that he knows a murder is about to happen and he knows who the murderer is-himself!
Thus, "Southwesterly Wind begins, the third in the Inspector Espinosa series by Brazilian author Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza. In translation, Garcia-Roza's compelling police procedural is well worth the time. Over the course of the trilogy, the author has developed and presented a respectable policeman and story line.
Gideon (thirty) is a single young man who lives alone with his mother. At his last birthday party, a seer approaches him to predict that before his next birthday, he will murder someone. Unsettling, of course, and Gideon finally yields to the intense pressure of such a prediction to arrange a meeting with Espinosa, in which he confesses of the prediction. He asks for help.
Espinosa is a bit skeptical but a sixth sense tells him not to dismiss the young man so easily. And before long, a co-worker and friend of Gideon's is found dead in the subway, having been run over by the train.
Then another death, this time the clairvoyant who'd made the prediction in the first place. Espinosa is left to tie the clues together and to solve the case, as all the evidence indicates that, despite the fact Gideon knew both victims, he has alibis in both instances.
Garcia-Roza not only masterfully handles the police procedural here, but also underscores the work with landscape and atmosphere of Rio. Espinosa's mannerisms, his personal thoughts and developments which make him into a human being, all are woven intricately into this work. He's a policeman we can admire and respect, a character "worth knowing."
This is a series that should continue. The publisher's comments indicate that the author is a great success in Brazil. Now we have him here in the States. It's a welcomed immigration.

Great story. This woman and her children lived an adventure we can only dream about. She must be a very courageous and giving person. I hope the inhabitants of Costa Rica realize the compassion and good will she has for them. Ms Kohan and her family will enjoy a life time of memories from this experience.

I very much enjoyed reading this book about a typical American mom who gave up everything and traveled to Costa Rica with her two kids. We get so caught up in how we live our lives, we forget that in other countries and other places life is totally different. What a brave person to leave all that is normal to travel to a foreign country and live without all the modern conveniences we take for granted. I hope Ms. Kohan has the opportunity to go back to live in Costa Rica; it certainly sounds like she loved it there.

I was skeptical at first about reading a book on the steps. I wasn't sure if it could help me. I had attended a few meetings and thought I knew some of the concepts, but this book opened my eyes. I think that Melody Beattie is very personal and caring in the mind of a codependent. She made me feel like I wasn't a bad person and I could recover from the out of control way my life has been. I'm only on step three, but I feel like I understand more than I have my whole life about who I am and my own needs. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with codependency or with the addiction of a loved one. I never even knew I was a codependent, but the book has taught me that I am and its ok, I just need to start making changes.

A Great book for the Frasier fan or occasional Chef.......2007-01-02
Something that just arrived in the mail is "Cafe' Nervosa: The Connoisseur's Cookbook," an eclectic collection of recipes ostensibly from Frasier, Daphne, and the entire crew. I love to cook and I'm always on the outlook for new recipes and this is a fine collection of some really interesting ones. The picture I've uploaded is one of my favorites, Mocha Nervosa Walnut Bread.
The book is divided into four sections, Man Can Live by Bread Alone (breads and desserts); Let's do Lunch (small, relatively simply meals); Just Bring Two Forks (ornate, you-better-think-about-it meals); and Some Like it Hot (coffees and drinks). Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes and bits from the show. The book also has an index for quick lookup. At 108 pages, it's not a huge book, but well written and just quirky enough to keep your interest. And the recipes are easy enough that almost anyone (that is, me) can do them without getting lost or having to travel to Trader Joe's for some obscure ingredient.

Recipies That Are GREAT & Perfect For ANY Fan Of "Frasier!".......2000-09-11
You cannot go wrong with any cookbook that is published by Oxmoor House; and their cookbooks by Southern Living magazine & are EXCELLENT! I know because we have been using their books for over 21 years for ALL sorts of events, both formal and informal. I was delighted to see that they teamed up with Dr. Frasier Crane, and his brother Dr. Niles Crane to give us these GREAT receipes from the Cafe Nervosa. From the opening pages it will become VERY clear that this NOT a book to be taken lightly! The first color photograph that you see is for Prosciutto-and-Fontina Panini which is delicious! There are recipies for a number of muffins, biscuits and scones. There is a Cappuccino Biscotti that is very easy to make, a Mocha Nervosa Walnut Bread, Buttermilk Pancakes, and a Silken Sour Cream Coffee Cake. You will also find a great section that has recipes for lunch. There are several GOOD dessert Recipes, and yes, COFFEE!! All of this in just 105 pages, containing 12 full page color photographs of several finished recipes. You will also get MANY quotes from Frasier, Niles, Daphnae, Martin and Roz, which are witty and funny!
If you are as big a fan of "Frasier" as I am, and LOVE GOOD food, then this very CLEVER cookbook is bound to please!!

Every recipe I have tried has worked beautifully. Despite the appearances that this is just a novelty book, the ideas and combinations really create tasty foods. The dishes are fun and creative. Delicious!

Being from the same city as Frasier and Niles Crane, I must admit that this is a great cookbook with tasty recipes. I feel sorry for Niles that his relationship with Maris hasn't worked out. Still I believe this is the book for anyone who likes the show. Even if you don't watch "Frasier," you should still try their recipes. Keep the faith, Niles! You'll find somebody.

Craige Scores a Ten With Her Literary Phenom.......2002-07-24
Patricia Craige, who ranges from top Norweigan Elkhound breeder to top dog show competitor, shares her insights in the canine field to a new audience eager to eat her every word. Why do I give this author such high acclaim? For three simple reasons:
a). Mrs. Craige shows the reader many examples of dogs who have succeeded inm both the show ring and the whelping box. Many dogs, ranging from the top-producing dog of all time to the dog with the most Best-In-Shows (the highest honor at any dog show), are shown, with in-depth study on how the greatest of dogs made their way to the top.
b). The book is very well understood thanks to the authors' personal experience. Mrs. Craige is an owner-handler, the lowest on the totem pole in the canine realm. However, one of her glorious Elkhounds became the top dog all breeds in the year 1970. This astounding tribute to the hard work and dedication she put into breeding and raising top dogs is followed up with a string of top dogs of any breed. She also bred, owned, and handled the top Elkhound of all-time and one of the top winning hounds of all-time with sixty-six all-breed Best-In-Shows. Her last big winner was shown from 1993-1995, daughter of the top winning Elkhound and two-time Westminster Hound Group winner (Winning at Westminster is the highest honor any owner, handler, or breeder can aspire to). Despite all of this, the author's down-to-earth writing style solaces the reader, allowing the reader to thoroughly enjoy the book.
c). Why don't you tell me? THere are so many reasons to applaud this book. I am sure that if you were to add it to your collection, you'd find your own reasons to back up the notion that this book truly is BORN (err, published) TO WIN!!

Layman's Genetics.......1998-06-06
A great book, full of important information for breeders. One of the real strengths of the book is the section on genetics and inheritance. I've read a reasonable amount on gene theory but this book really clarified how things work. I also really like the section on litter evaluation. Ms Trotter's style is emminently readable, and certainly one can't argue with her experience in breeding for success!

If you do nothing else for yourself in the coming year, make sure you get a copy of Pat Craige Trotter's "Born To Win." You can learn more from spending two weks with this book than some breeders will learn in two decades of trying to figure things out by trial and error. The range of information offered to readers of Pat's book is so great that a book review really doesn't do it justice. I do not like writing a negative review, but the only plus about this was I bought it used on Amazon for around $3.
I will not harp that it is outdated, that is understood by the copyright date. But, it is only a list and an incomplete and sporatic one at that. Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why books are in the list or left out of the list.
There are only 2 1/2 pages of actual text from the author and it really is not that informative.
There are several other books for collecting cookbooks that I just bought, and they seem to be better by 10 times just by merely glancing through them. I won't mention them since I'm not through with them yet.
Unless you want to add this to your collection, do not buy this as an informative tool
OUTDATED, INADEQUATE...DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!.......2004-05-03
This book, original or updated, even if free, is NOT useful for any new or established collector TODAY.
It is wholly inadequate in it's meager sampling (primarily performed in 1990) and it's lack of ANY pricing awareness or concern for a book's value being modified by being a torn first edition, or being a great later revision or mass produced reprint.
A useful update of this book, and more inclusive, selective and useful, could be created by sampling current Amazon book reviews with prices. To be more inclusive for true pricing, sampling a week's ACTUAL SALES of cookbooks on EBAY (Thousands of cook book titles and prices WITH condition of book sold-TRULY- Up to Date!), collating the titles and prices, indicating if first edition etc., having a price spread for books in various conditions, and publishing it...here's a strong hint to any would be (and successful) Cook Book Price Guide writers-I'll buy YOUR book! Through these methods, a new collector could better learn what's a great cook book (by published reviews of historic or literary merits), and pass over the "Fluff" of many titles in this dated price sampling.
Though "updated" again in the 1990's since 1990, over 15 years ago (as of 2004), it is still a small sampling and hodgepodge of titles and prices reflecting only as Ms. Dickinson freely admits.."actual sales within recent months in our area". Today we are, in this time of internet access, in a world far more encompassing than Ms. Dickinson's local community of 1990, 1995 or later. The prices of some books have skyrocketed since this publication. Pity the collector who might pass over a very valuable book today...just becaue it was not listed, or because it was priced at $2 back then...
For example, it has listings only for the Settlement Cookbook's 1938 22 ed and the 1949 edition, never clueing the reader into the First Edition of 1911 and later editions. It ignores the wonderful 50+ set of Time-Life Foods of the World Cookbooks entire existence!
Looking up Mrs. Beeton's Classic "Every-Day Cookery" or other classic illustrated books from before the 1880's and onward, this lists only ONE Mrs. Beeton book...and from 1967, at that!!! Oh yes, this price list is from books sold in Ms. Dickinson's limited local area over a few months sampling time..what should I, or another collector hope for then or now, from such a "sampling"?
There are tens of thousands of cookbook titles currently available, and thousands now published each year! This outdated listing of few book titles gives no clue as to a book's importance, if any, to collectors overall. It does a disservice by not "starring" titles of books that are "perceived" by collectors as being of more historic or literary merit than others. Itdoes not indicate books, with or without "prices" that are considered just plain "enjoyable" readings ...and this modification could make for a useful book to be prepared for a beginning collector.
The Recipe leaflet titles in this under 200 page book further dilutes any value of this book to cookbook collectors as well, as the few leafelets better belong in a booklet mentioning their all important Fine to Poor condition with prices.
Read books like Cookbooks Worth Collecting by Mary Barile for a historical taste of cookbooks (despite the 1994 prices), and realize that you will have to cobble information gleaned from additonal books and the internet to get an idea of the vast history, daily life, and aspirations of the authors and readers in their times, reading recipes from Medieval times, to Iron Chef creations!
This book has some black and white photos of books also selected willy-nilly, most have no copyright indicated, and why Favorite Dartmouth Recipes, Souffle Spectaculars (1969), Stocking Up (1977) have a photo, and many of the classics do not is again, limited to and by the painfully brief sampling performed back in 1990!!
This is not a book written by a cookbook lover or true collector...and is shows in it's glaring omissions of classics, and included "fluff" of local cookbooks that expands it's apparent number of books sampled.
If you want a book for pricing since the 1990's...this is NOT it! If you want to learn about cookbooks in any way, this is NOT for you, either! An enticing title perhaps, 15 years out of date, and not much more to offer.
A Good Choice for Cookbook Collectors!.......2000-08-23
New cookbook collectors will find this an invaluable reference tool for evaluating their collection. Although missing the historical information found in other reference books on the subject, the sheer number of cookbooks listed makes it well worth the investment. While my copy showed 1999 values on the cover, I found little difference in the few listings checked against a 1993 revision of the same book. Overall, Dickinson's values tend to be lower than other price guides, but this book is still a very useful reference. Despite any shortcomings, this book receives an enthusiastic 5 stars just for being the absolute SIMPLEST reference book on the subject I have found. All titles are listed alphabetically - no thumbing through different categories and trying to decode the author's mindset for classifying a particular book.

The purpose of this study is to identify and describe recurrent patterns of composition in the twenty two major panegyrics Mutanabbi wrote to Sayf al-Dawla during his stay at the Hamdanid court in Aleppo between 337/948 and 345/956. It discusses the types of utterance used in endings and in cadential lines before definable internal boundaries, the organising conventions of the passages that lead into and out of chronicles of military campaigns, the non-random placement of certain crescendo motifs, various means of local organisation in poems without events, etc. It also considers brief differences in technique between the Aleppo period and Mutanabbi's earlier and later work, and casts a glance at possible predecessors. Based on a sizable and coherent sample of poetry, this study demonstrates that compositional rules and predilections played a pervasive role in Mutanabbi's writing in the years when his career was at its height.

I was perusing through my bookshelf today, and stumbled across a very old edition of this book, "The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr."
Well I'd always noticed it here and there - but today I actually read it.
It's fantastic. It's something else. He was a genius before his time - yet he managed to stand up, at the right time.
Each excerpt makes you think. Very deep and moving.
Powerful. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a small compilation of quotes from Dr. King's writings and speeches. It's never a bad idea to honor the civil rights leaders and martyrs by reading literature that would again remind us of their struggle.
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we have come:
"I can foresee the Negro vote becoming consistently the decisive vote in national elections." - chapter on Justice and Freedom
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we haven't come:
"...wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows." - chapter on Peace
In one sitting, you could read this book in its entirety. As benefactors of his sacrifice, we should spare a few moments of our time to reflect on Dr. King and his enduring legacy.
Small but effective collection of MLK's speeches.......2005-07-11
When looking for some words of tribute to use at a church function, I recalled the copy of the book sitting amongst others in my home library. No better orator could have been selected than the revered civil rights leader. My presentation went off without and hitch and for that, I thank Dr. King.

After having read quite abit by and About King over the years, I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they were new to King's philosophies and ideas or a veteran of the movement he helped to create within this country and the world.
