Probably my favorite of Susan Conant's Holly Winter novels. Realisticly funny characters that had me snikering ("Women who run with vets?") It was also a good whodunit, having me second gussing who the killer really was. I also am a dog show addict, and the events that take place not far from unrealistic (well, I have never seen anyone hold a dog at gunpoint, but hey, it could be done).

Seeing a fantasy adventure unfold through the eyes of dragons is fresh, rather refreshing.... particularly in a world where dragons are the predominant species (humans are inexistent so far....). But the writing is only mediocre and the pace of both plot as well as character development are somewhat inconsistent. There are moments where things happen too quickly (e.g. Fortune's falling in love with Gossamer) and others where there is too much dwelling on the journey and minor details that do not contribute much to the character or plot. Feels as though there are moments of lull while the author searches for inspiration on how to carry on.
An interesting read, but certainly not something that I will lose sleep over.

Dragon charm is a beautifully written and highly enthralling book. I could just feel the desperation and hope comming out of characters like fortune. It brings life to our percieved version of dragons. No longer are the stupid and eat the fair maden in distress but have lives and opions and feelings. Graham Edwards has brought out the best and worst in dragons. A highly commendable book.

I think this is a great book about the predijuce that two races can have with there diffrences. This is a great book that only has dragons and the magical charm they proccess. And the challenge a young dragon must take to keep the turning true and so save all dragons natural or charmed. This book shows how two slightly diffrent races can unite to save a common grounded purpose
Epic, original, and deliciously so........2000-02-18
I'd like to say two things about this book.* (1) You will be rewarded for the time you spend reading this book.* (2) The beings populating this book have great depth of character, and are all people with whom one can find rapport in some way.* * I picked up this book in one of those enormous book super-stores. At first I was thrilled, I loved the beautiful descriptions and teasing, unusually compelling plot. The story became very emotionally demanding for me, however, because I am the kind of person that likes to read every word on every page, and consider the meaning of each passage.* About half way through, the confusion and despair and separation of the characters I grew attached to became to much... I put down the book. I came back to it two years later, only to find that I had stopped just before things became truly exciting.* I urge you to buy this book, and ride out the set up. The pay off is great. Some elements may seem familiar to you, like the magic system, issues of racism, and relationships. However, there are myriad aspects of this book underlying the familiar, and the plot itself is about as epic as they get, having to do with no less than the very existence of reality.* Different philosophies clash throughout the book, some with lone champions such as Wraith and Shatter, and some tested under vastly different circumstances. Some are resolved, some are not, but the important thing is that no one is truly 'evil'. They have their different perceptions of reality, but every single aspect of their character has solid foundations in their life experiences. This makes the characters come alive. The reader can relate to each and every one of the major characters in this book. If you buy and read this book, you will not regret it. Personally, I can not wait to start reading the second book. This book could be accurately classified with that 'underground' distinction, at least here in the 'States, and while that usually means it is a good book, it also makes it much harder to find.* * Don't worry, even if you can't get all of the books, this one stands alone very well by itself.* ---Ryuuko *P.S.: The mostly dragon cast does much, that is to say, a lot for this book. I found this book to be extremely helpful in the process of overcoming a long term eating disorder. Having been both anorexic and overweight, this book has offered me hope in teaching me to read my bodie's clues and to begin to trust them. I appreciate that while the author is honest in saying that becoming a normal eater requires hard work, she also impart's hope to both those who have totally learned to ignore their body's clues that they are full and those who have have learned to ignore physcial hunger and have lived under the tyranny of food diaries and counting calories and fat grams.

This book is an excellent read for those dealing with emotional eating. I'm not finished with this book. Yet, every time I read it, I learn something new. Her voice is compassionate and assertive. And, she explores the emotional issues that drive us to eat rather than feel. Plus, Koenig doesn't overwhelm the reader with a lot of psycho-babble. She's firmly rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which empowers emotional eaters to deal with their issues head on.
Koenig also states that, like alcoholism, emotional eaters will never be cured, but will be a work in progress. It taught me to stop, think, and listen to my heart and body. I highly recommend it!
Finally, a book that makes sense!.......2007-08-17
I have been an emotional and binge eater with a history of related eating disorders. I have tried most diets out there, own most books on healthy eating that have come out since the 70s, and have exercised both moderately and to excess. I have never been able to find whatever it is to keep me at a healthy weight -- until now.
It has always maddened me that people (such as DH) are able to eat normally and never worry about calories or food groups or weight. This book has helped me understand why they can do it and I can't. It also contains exercises to help me understand the relationship that my beliefs, feelings, and actions have on my life, and exercises to help me replace some of my unhealthy beliefs, feelings, and actions with healthier ones. I highly recommend this book to anyone who had struggled with weight and food issues.
I also recommend her workbook, The Food and Feelings Workbook: A Full Course Meal on Emotional Health which takes the ideas in this book a step further and is filled with information and exercises to help continue the self-work it takes to finally become a more normal eater.
I have been practicing the principles in this book and have begun working in the workbook. A month later (after ditching all diet books and ideas) I have lost a few pounds (normally the absence of a diet would mean an incredible weight gain) and am more relaxed around food. The best things this has given me is the ability to focus on other things in my life and not have every waking thought revolve around what I just ate, what I am eating, and what I am going to eat next and when.
Is this process easy? No, not really. Is it worth it? You bet!!!

i think this book is more for undereaters than emotional eaters. it did not tell me how to do with my feelings at all. this book is for people who dread coming to the dinner table which i dont. i love how at the end of the chapter how they want you to explain to your family and friend that you are trying to eat normally if they like it or not but this book does not help you unless you are anorexic.

Probably the most complete, step by step book ever written for those dealing with dysfunctional eating. Karen gets directly to the core issues and beliefs and thus setting the stage for the reader to create a pathway to freedom. Feelings are survivable, although so many of us will do anything not to feel them. When you are staring at the kitchen cupboard looking for food when you are not hungry, there were thoughts, feelings and beliefs that brought you there. This book, coupled with her "Food and Feelings Workbook" truly provide the way out of the labarynth.

Another great one from Lorna Sass.......2003-09-06
I've been very happy with all of Lorna Sass' cookbooks (she even got me into using a pressure cooker!). This one is no exception - lots of neat quick soups, salads, stews and other dishes that don't require a lot of work to prepare or (especially nice) clean up since they're done mostly in one pot/pan. Lots of variety - dips/spreads, curries, stirfry, grain/pasta dishes, and straight vegetables too. Really a good cookbook to have onhand for when you don't feel like cooking up a big deal but want something satisfying.
Taught me how to cook.......2002-04-23
This little book is AWESOME. I recommend it for anyone with little time to cook (college students, working moms, anybody else!). The recipes are great - easy and fast (be sure to read the side bars as they provide simple ideas to vary the basic recipes). But, I think the best part of this book is that it really teaches you how to cook fast, healthy food. I find myself applying her time-saving methods to other recipes or to creations of my own. This is the book that I turn to when I want a nice meal in 30 minutes or less.
Written for speed -- the most practical cookbook I own........2002-02-21
Every cookbook I own has a focus. Some are ethnic cookbooks. Some are gourmet cookbooks. Some are comprehensive references.
This cookbook's focus is speed. Every recipe lists the "prep time" and "cook time", and for almost all recipes those times are each between 5 and 15 minutes.
Each recipe consists of a short list of ingredients, and the preparation directions are clear and super-concise. Occasionally, one ingredient in a recipe will be a product of another recipe, which is usually a pet peeve of mine in cookbooks, but such ingredients are rare and always have store-bought equivalents if you don't want to prepare them yourself.
Many of the recipes can also be converted from leftovers into a different form -- the quinoa / potato / corn / pepper pilaf easily becomes a stew with a couple cups of water and some veggie stock powder. This is especially handy if you primarily cook just for yourself (as I do.)
I only have two complaints about the book, and they're not major. The first is the lack of all photography, although it sure makes the cookbook unbelievably inexpensive, so it's a fair trade.
My second (minor) complaint is that either I'm a slow cook, or her prep times assume that the ingredients are already as specified -- a recipe will call for chopped carrots, diced pepper, diced tofu, etc. and I think the prep time assumes you already have it all diced and chopped. Either that, or it's simply that I'm chopping everything by hand rather than with a food processor. Either way, the recipes generally seem to take me roughly 150% to 200% of the time she allots. Since I'm not a professional chef (to say the least) I can totally accept that this is just me being slow.
If you're like me, you browse Amazon and add most things to your wish list, only buying fairly sparsely of the items that are really compelling. If so, buy this book. It's inexpensive, and it's fantastic. In just the past week I've owned it, it has dramatically changed the quality and diversity of what I eat at home.
The best vegan book around.......2001-01-04
I'm a vegeterian. I don't eat meat, dairy, eggs or fish. It's been very difficult to cook for my family. I finally found this book which has excellent recipes. My husband is not a vegetarian but, seems to love all the meals I've been preparing lately. He is now considering on becoming a vegan too. The recipes are super easy and the ingredients can be easily found at the supermarket.

Best Parrot training book.......2007-03-10
If you're looking for a variety of tricks to teach your bird and good instructions for how to do them, this is the book! It ranges from the simple wave and kiss to riding bicycles and "playing basketball." I had seen a couple of rave reviews online but was a little skeptical until I looked at the book itself. It's been fantastic and has lots of little tricks to help you when you're having trouble. I have a sun conure, and while many have said they're not as quick as other parrots, he's learning like a champ!
Most Comprehensive Book on Parrot Training Available.......2006-05-01
I have known Tani for many years. Under her tutelage, I taught my birds the following tricks: a puzzle, mailbox, basketball hoop, wave, piggy bank, stack cups, stack rings....to name a few. She once told me that birds never forget what they learn and since I have been doing this for seven years or so, I have discovered that she is right!
This book has detailed instructions on how to teach your bird a multitude of trick behaviors: from variations on the retrieve (my personal favorite) to capturing behaviors to create what Tani terms "innovative tricks". There is so much information in this book that I believe it will become a classic for decades to come.
What Tani terms "trick behaviors" are really the basis for building a strong system of communication between you and your parrot. This is so vital to living with parrots as companion animals. Don't be fooled by the notion that these are just "silly tricks". The truth is that they are stepping stones to building a mutually interesting and enjoyable relationship between you, your family and your avian companions.
Just about anybody can teach their bird at least a few of these behaviors. The secret is patience and repitition. Once you start training, you will enjoy it and you will find that your bird will blossom from the attention and positive feedback.
I definitely recommend this book along with Tani's tapes and DVD's. This is one facet of building an interesting and long term relationship with your bird.

Tani Robar DOES IT AGAIN!.......2006-03-11
It seems that anything and everything you read about Pet Parrot Trick Training all comes back to a common denominator. It's Tani Robar! This book is a MUST HAVE bible of information for any owner of pet birds from a little canary all the way up to a large Macaw.
Tani's writing style is fun to read and keeps you wanting to know more through the whole book! Many times reading throughout the book I said to myself " so that's how trainers do that! I can teach my bird that trick!" It kept me reading all the way to the end!
This book should be a required read for all bird owners. It gives so much insight to how birds think and behave to our actions!

this book assumes that you already know how to use scissors and glue. the rest is up to you! without giving heavy handed instruction, it lets kids (and adults) use their imagination to make what ever they like. the paper included is beautiful. in my mind, it's the whole reason for buying the book. you can make illustrations (collages) just like eric carle's. thanks to him for providing all his fans with this great pad of paper.
A Total Disappointment!.......2002-06-16
Don't bother with this book, you'll be disappointed. The only thing worth while about this are the few sheets of decorative tissue paper that come with it. I know nothing more about collage after reading this book then before I bought it. Do yourself a favor and DON'T waste your time or money on this. There are MUCH more informative books out there.
Not Just for Kids!.......2001-10-26
I was looking for a very elementary, how-to collage book for myself and this is a good one.
Because Carle wrote and stocked this book for children, it is very basic, but that was what I needed to get me over my fear of trying a collage of my own. His explanation of the format and process was very simple but very thorough. There are enough colors and designs of tissue papers to get anyone off to a good start in creating several different collages.
I think this would be a great gift for children and even for an adult who yearns to find the artist within!

When I put this book on my wish list months ago, I had never seen the book before. Now that I have the book, I can say that this is an excellent gift for a gradeschool aged child, and the tissue paper that it comes with is beautiful. As someone who loves the art of Eric Carle, I thought it was fun to work with paper similar to the materials that he uses in his art. The instructions are so easy, and with a touch of supervision, this book could easily turn a rainy day into a fun and creative project. This book would be especially good for those children who have read Eric Carle's picture books.

Beside instructions and illustrations on how to do a collage, the book also contains 72 printed tissue papers to make finished pictures that look enough like Eric Carle's work to please any child. My five year old was delighted with her projects.

In the seventies, as signs of decay began to show in the capitalist experiment of the newly independent African countries, a "bard of the misrule" emerged on the streets of Lagos. Often shirtless and armed with his trademark saxophone, Fela Anikulapo Kuti tore his way into popular culture with Afrobeat music. Blending ethno-traditional forms with the reigning highlife and jazz rhythms, Afrobeat drew lyrics from the flip side of neo-colonial society and Fela's London and American experience in the sixties.
In the two decades that followed, Fela ruled the nights from Afrika Shrine, his signature night club, and the days from the turntables of the restless city dwellers along the Atlantic coastline. Fela's Afrobeat became a dynamic mode of expression in the social history of post-independent West Africa and generated a counterculture that bonded through music, drugs, resistance politics—and ultimately, the nascence of an Afrocentric contemporary global culture.
